Our favorite 3-step skincare lines for a simplified routine

When it comes to convenience, you can’t get any better than 3-step skincare lines. Everything you need for radiant skin is right in one box, usually in the form of a complementary cleanser, toner and moisturizer. Sometimes it really beats playing around with different products to see what works best together. So below are some of the best 3-step skincare products.

CLINIQUE 3-Step Skincare System For Skin Type 2 Dry-to-Dry Combination Skin: Combination skin is always tricky to work with. This system, with a soap and two types of lotion, takes away the guesswork.

Dr. Lin Skincare Acne Clarifying Treatment: Here’s a cheaper alternative to the ProActive+ system that basically does the same thing, and it’s available at drug stores. The cleanser has salicylic acid to clear pores and promote cell turnover, while the lotion has benzoyl peroxide to get rid of acne-causing bacteria. What makes it a 3-step skincare system is the additional spot corrector.

Exuviance Age Repair Trio: Fight aging with this system’s SkinRise Morning Bionic Tonic, Vespera Bionic Serum and the Rejuvenating Complex, all chock full of vitamins like A and E to help nourish skin.

intraceuticals 3-Step Skincare Essential Kit: This anti-aging system helps skin look healthier and radiant. The system focuses on hydration with its serum, hydration gel and moisture-binding cream.

Balance Me Three Steps to Radiant Skin: A face balm, oil and cream work to make skin brighter and smoother.

Kora Organics 3-Step Skincare System: Supermodel Miranda Kerr swears by this stuff, which contains a cream cleanser, a balancing mist and a day-and-night cream. It comes in three varieties for different skin types: normal/dry, normal/sensitive and oily/combination.

Philosophy Cleanse, Refine and Renew Kit: Refresh your skin with this kit’s cleanser, “Renewed Hope in a Jar” and the Microdelivery Peel Vitamin C/Peptide Peel.

Glytone Normal-To-Oily Skin System Kit: The glycolic acid in this kit helps skin renew itself, and reviewers say it helps with acne. Okay, it actually has four steps: a wash, an exfoliating lotion, a peel gel and a facial lotion, but it’s a pretty heavy-duty system that’s worth including.

Burt’s Bees Natural Acne Solutions 3-Step Skincare Regimen Kit: If you’re looking to fight acne and get natural, this product has salicylic acid derived from willow bark.

Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Detox Kit: As the name suggests, the cleanser, serum and gel mask of this system are infused with detoxifying cucumber.

bareMinerals PURIFY. EMPOWER. MOISTURIZE. Normal-to-Dry Skin: Fight aging, even if you have dry skin. This kit contains natural ingredients like lempuyang ginger, elderflower, rosemary, algae extract and St. John’s wart to nourish skin.

Osmotics Cosmeceuticals Micro Peel 3-Step Skincare Resurfacing System: Breathe life into dull, tired skin and fight aging. This kit comes with an exfoliating charcoal mask, collagen-boosting micro-peel and protective barrier cream.

Clinique Redness Solutions Kit: Zap redness with this 3-step skincare brand favorite. It includes SPF 15 and helps skin’s moisture balance.

Yes to Tomatoes 3-Step Acne Fighting and Clear Regimen Kit: This pore scrub, repair treatment and balancing moisturizer help fight acne, and provide natural antioxidants.

Murad Spotless Skin Set: If you have some hyperpigmentation concerns, the vitamin C in the cleanser and moisturizer protects and nourishes skin, while the second-step serum has hydroquinone to even skin tone.

About Clinique

In 1968, Clinique was founded on the philosophy that you don’t have to be born with great skin—it can be acquired. Ever since, skincare professionals have paired up with dermatologists to create allergy-tested and fragrance-free products that are gentle on the skin but still effective. To ensure its high standards, every Clinique item is tested 12 times on 600 people, and If a single application causes a reaction, the product is scrapped. Clinique also formulates each product to address an individual skin type or concern instead of hawking universal solutions to nuanced problems. Still, most of the brand’s care routines follow the original, time-tested three-step formula: cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize. Since its launch, Clinique has branched out to cosmetics, creating highly pigmented lipsticks, eye shadows, and foundation that are just as good for your skin.

Also, if something is irritating your skin, stop using it! That may seem obvious, but Dr. Ogunleye says this is one of the most common skin-care mistakes she sees. Some products are known to cause a little bit of irritation when you first start using them, but your daily cleanser, moisturizer, or sunscreen should not be causing stinging, burning, or other irritation.

Everyone still needs to apply sunscreen every day, though. No exceptions. Here’s how to find one you won’t mind wearing.

What if I want to do more?

You may be surprised at how, after a few weeks of getting down these basic steps, your other skin concerns calm down. But if they don’t, your next steps will depend on your skin’s specific needs, Dr. Newsom says.

If you have acne, you may want to swap in a cleanser with salicylic acid, a gentle chemical exfoliator, or the occasional spot treatment with benzoyl peroxide. For wrinkles, fine lines, or sun damage, you may want to add in an over-the-counter retinoid to start with (and maybe a prescription version later). Interested in managing hyperpigmentation? Brightening agents like hydroquinone or vitamin C may do the trick.

But be sure to add just one product at a time, Dr. Newsom says, and give it at least two weeks before adding something else. If you add multiple things at once and have a bad reaction to something, it will be impossible to know which product was responsible without patch testing, Dr. Ogunleye points out. Or if you do see positive results, you won’t know which product was responsible for the change.

It’s also important to avoid adding too many products that do the same thing. If you already have one retinoid or exfoliating acid in your lineup, you may find that adding another one doesn’t help and is actually just more irritating.

Whatever you do, be patient. Aside from using too many products, Dr. Ogunleye says one of the biggest mistakes newbies make is to give up too easily. “Everybody thinks that you put on your acne cream and the next day all of your acne will be gone,” she says. But as SELF explained previously, both over-the-counter and prescription treatments take weeks or months to actually result in noticeable changes. Dr. Ogunleye maintains that it’s important to adjust your expectations and be prepared to give a new products two to three months before getting discouraged and giving up on them.

When should you see a dermatologist?

If you’re trying to find gentle everyday products and can’t seem to land on one that works with your skin, it’s time to talk to a dermatologist, Dr. Ogunleye says. Alternately, if you’re trying to address a specific skin concern (like acne or hyperpigmentation) and you’re not seeing any improvements, a dermatologist can help figure out the issue and possibly prescribe a stronger medication that may be more effective.

And of course, if you’re finding that your skin reacts badly to products and you’re not sure why, definitely talk to a dermatologist. They can help you sort through what might be causing that irritation and give you guidelines for how to avoid it in the future.

That said, know that finding what works for you is probably going to take some trial and error. And it will ultimately come down to your individual skin needs and your personal preferences. So the first step is just to get out there and try stuff!

Are you a man with a minimalist attitude towards grooming and skincare? Then this 3-step skincare routine for men is for you!

Maybe you’ve watched your partner perform seemingly endless steps to their morning routine, using a multitude of fancy-smelling products – only to repeat it all again before bed. Maybe you’ve even been roped into a face mask (that you secretly enjoyed) but simply don’t know where to start when it comes to your own daily skincare routine. Well, we believe your at-home skincare routine should be straightforward and easy, no matter who you are.

The key is to focus on the essentials. It will only add a few more minutes to your morning routine but will leave you with clearer, younger looking skin for longer. Here’s an easy 3-step skincare routine for men – perform the steps daily for best results.

Easy skincare for men

Step 1. Cleanse

We recommend cleansing first thing in the morning and again before bed to help remove the build-up of dirt and debris that can lead to breakouts and premature ageing. If you’re in the shower, even better! The steam will open your pores to allow for a deeper cleanse. Apply a pea-sized amount of a gentle cleanser to your face, steering clear of soap bars that often contain harsh chemicals, then lather in circular motions for 30 seconds and rinse.

Cleansing is not to be confused with exfoliating, which helps to remove the dead skin cell build up that can make your skin look a little dull. Exfoliating is important, but not necessary every day. Try to exfoliate after cleansing just 2-3 times per week.

Recommended products: Balense Microdermal Gentle Cleanser and Balense Microdermal Cleansing Scrub

Step 2. Hydrate

Hydration for the skin comes in two forms: the water you drink and the moisturiser you use. We’re going to assume you’re already getting your eight glasses a day and focus on the external product application of a daily moisturiser. This will deliver essential vitamins and nutrients that will hydrate and firm the skin, while simultaneously creating a protective barrier to prevent dirt and toxins from infiltrating and clogging your pores. It will also prevent dry, flaky skin during the cooler months.

To apply, use just enough to create a thin layer over your entire face (and down your neck, too). Repeat again after your nightly cleanse to maximise hydration while your body’s cells regenerate.

Recommended products: ReBalense Moisture Normal

Step 3. Protect

You’re almost done! This last step is the most important of all: sunscreen. Using a daily SPF50+ is essential to shield our skin from harmful UV rays that cause pigmentation, sunburn, wrinkles and even cancer.

After your moisturiser has dried to the touch, apply a layer of sunscreen over the top before heading outside for the day. Even if you work in an office environment, it is still important to wear sunscreen for those sunny commutes or lunches spent in the park. If you’re in the sun for over two hours, don’t forget to reapply.

Recommended products: Balense UV Defiance SPF 50+

I don’t know about you, but I’m trying to keep this routine as minimal as possible. The less I have to buy and use the better. That’s why we’re going to kill two birds with one stone and use a sunscreen that also moisturizes.

What to do: “Use a sunscreen with at least 30 SPF but no more than 50.” Says Dr. Steven Q. Wang, a board-certified dermatologist and Head of the Dermatology Section at Memorial Sloan Kettering Basking Ridge. Anything higher doesn’t offer much more significant protection.

When to do it: After the toner is air dried.

What I like to use: In this case, I have one rec, and it’s IMAGE Skincare Prevention+ Daily Matte Moisturizer SPF 32+

I can’t say enough how much I love this one.

It goes on matte and has a pleasant subtle smell and moisturizes. It also contains both zinc oxide and titanium oxide which “ your face into a mirror against the sun’s rays and works the instant it’s applied, unlike a chemical sunscreen which takes 15-20 minutes to be ready to protect you.” according to the experts at Heyday.

Are you ahead the game and have a great rec for cleansers, toners, or sunscreen?

Got any additional recs to take this routine to the next level?

Healthy skin doesn’t necessarily require a 10-step regimen or convoluted routine.

“A complicated skin care routine is not the key to healthy, glowing skin,” explained Dr. Debra Wattenberg, a New York City-based dermatologist. “Rather, the key is creating a skin care routine that is geared to your skin type and skin issues. If a 10-step routine works for you and it makes you look and feel good, there is usually no harm but for most of us it’s too complicated, too expensive, exhausting and unnecessary.”

Another problem with complex routines? They can be too “one-size-fits-all,” without accounting for individual features like skin type. “Simple is usually better,” Wattenberg said. “It’s more cost-effective and usually sustainable.”

“Most skin types can generally follow a routine of three steps in the morning and three in the evening,” Wattenberg explained. The three steps she recommends are:

  1. Cleanse
  2. Target specific skin issues
  3. Moisturize

Wattenberg stopped by TODAY to share a few of her favorite products and tips for finding the right products to fit your individual needs.

Cleansers are an important part of a skin care routine, but according to Wattenberg, people don’t always apply them correctly.

“It’s best to first wash your hands using soap and water, and then use about the size of a dime amount of a gel or cream face cleanser, or about one pump of a foam cleanser, directly onto your clean hands,” she said. “Rub together and massage the cleanser onto your face. Rinse with fresh, warm water, and pat dry.”

If you’re already a skin care expert, you can use a specialized electric brush or cleansing cloth to up your routine — but your own two hands work just as well.

Cleansers for Normal Skin

Drunk Elephant Jelly Cleanser

Wattenberg recommends this jelly-textured gel cleanser from Drunk Elephant. Perfect for removing makeup without drying out skin, it’s free of harsh chemicals and works on most skin types.

Fresh Soy Cleanser

This gentle soy cleanser from Fresh is a Sephora bestseller. With soy proteins that aim to remove all traces of skin and dirt, it can powerfully clean without stripping essential moisture from the skin.

Wattenberg recommends using the same products for evening use.

Cleansers for Dry Skin

Kiehl’s Micellar Cleansing Water

With tiny lipid spheres that remove makeup and dirt, this micellar water from Kiehl’s leaves skin feeling soft and hydrated.

CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser

Wattenberg recommends this nondrying cleanser, which has hyaluronic acid that helps cleanse and moisturize skin. Fragrance-free, it’s perfect for sensitive skin.

This mild cleanser won’t clog pores or dry out skin while it works to improve tone and texture. Oil-free, it leaves skin soft, smooth and even-looking.

Wattenberg also recommends keeping the Aveeno Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser in your evening routine.

Targeting skin issues

Stuff We Love

Get a daily roundup of items that will make your life easier, healthier and more stylish.

According to Wattenberg, targets are products that contain active ingredients used to target a specific skin area. Most products are highly concentrated and work under a “less is more” approach. For serums, you’ll usually just need one or two pumps to create a thin film of active ingredients. If you’re using a cream or gel, try starting with a pea-sized amount and dotting it over the surface of your face in small amounts before spreading it and rubbing it into the skin.

Products for Normal Skin

Drunk Elephant Vitamin C Serum

This potent serum from Drunk Elephant uses vitamin C to help with uneven skin tone and make skin firmer. Packed with antioxidants, it’s a great treat for your skin.

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic

Wattenberg recommends this vitamin C product, which is high in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and helps improve pigmentation while preventing fine lines and wrinkles.

ROC Retinol Night Cream

This night cream visibly reduces the look of lines and wrinkles while you sleep. Full of retinol and an essential mineral complex, it claims to leave your skin smoother and more youthful.

Aveeno Positively Radiant MaxGlow Drops

Providing 48 hours of moisture and radiance, these lightly scented drops are great for those with dry or combination skin.

Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Retinol Oil

This retinol serum helps tackle and repair the appearance of wrinkles and makes skin look visibly younger in just one week.

Products for Dry Skin

Skin Medica HA5

Wattenberg recommends this serum, which is full of hyaluronic acid, to improve hydration and plump the skin.

Skinceuticals B5 Gel

This gel from Skinceuticals also has hyaluronic acid and helps restore and retain moisture.

Sunday Riley Vitamin C And Turmeric Face Oil

This instantly absorbing face oil combines vitamin C, turmeric and evening primrose oil to brighten and hydrate skin.

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Serum

This serum immediately quenches and refreshes skin, delivering high levels of hydration and helping skin glow.

Products for Oily Skin

La Roche Posay Effaclar Acne Treatment

“This is a great anti-acne product that contains benzoyl peroxide and lipohydroxy acid to fight blemishes and acne-prone skin,” said Wattenberg.

ROC Deep Wrinkle Serum

This serum works with the skin’s natural renewing process to visibly reduce wrinkles.

Differin Gel

This over-the-counter acne treatment both clears and prevents blemishes and regulates skin cell turnover to fight the main causes of acne, like clogged pores.

You only need to apply a quarter-sized amount of moisturizer or sunscreen to your face, according to Wattenberg. For full-body application, try using about the same amount that would fill a shot glass.

After a week I started to bore of my routine, but as soon as I started seeing results, I knew it was going to be worth it. The red peeling on my chin began to heal itself after two weeks, and I began to notice that my breakouts were gradually getting less angry and returning more or less to the sort of spots I once knew.

Fast-forward to today and after two months of my stripped-back routine, my skin is almost back to good. I’m gradually starting to incorporate new products back into my routine, but I’m still limiting the amount of products I use to six or seven a day. Is my skin totally back to normal? No. But I’m not sure that it ever will be considering the years of damage I subjected it to with my excessive regimes. For now, it’s better, and that’s all I can ask for.

Please, next time you line up your products on the bathroom shelf ask yourself the following: Do I really know what I’m putting on my skin and what it mean? Do any of the products counteract each other? Does my skin really need this right now? If you’re satisfied, then proceed with caution. However, if you’re unsure, it’s best to stick to a stripped-back routine. Seriously, you’ll thank me for this.
