While the advent of silicon surgery has helped some enhance the size of their breasts, there is still no substitute for the real thing. They just bounce around much better than anything that plastic surgery can provide.

10 Tyra Banks

Tyra Banks is a supermodel that achieved fame after being featured twice on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine’s swimsuit edition. She was also one of the original angels of the lingerie brand Victoria’s Secret. She once had her own talk show entitled The Tyra Banks Show, before moving up to creating other shows like America’s Next Top Model and True Beauty. She once underwent a sonogram just to prove that her breasts are all natural.

9 Brooklyn Decker

Brooklyn Decker once had problems with her large breasts, as the fashion industry was not really keen on girls with big boobs. For a long time people equated thinness with health. I can show you plenty of pictures of Olsen twins and you’d know this isn’t so…We are now wiser and have learned that Body Fat percentage is a much better marker of overall health and fitness.

As a guy in the food and tech industry I’ve been thinking for a while about what the perfect body is. The answer is different for each individual out there. Health, however, is a bit easier to measure.

Since visuals give way to better understanding, I’ve assembled these images to try to understand what certain percentages of body fat actually look like on different types of people with this (Almost Complete Guide) to Body Fat Percentage Of Celebrities.

Body Fat Terms You Need to Know

Before we actually get down to business, we have to get the some terms down:

Body Fat Percentage: Amount of body fat (lb, or kg) divided by total body weight listed as a percentage.

Power Tip: Accu-Measure Body Tester or my personal favorite the Fitbit Aria Scale. Both do a good job to get a rough idea.

Body Fat Distribution: Everyone’s fat is on different parts of our bodies. (..remember in school someone would call you a fat head…haha…wait I digress). Some women are pear shaped (The hip measurement is greater than the bust measurement), while others are apple shaped ( The shoulders are broader compared to their hips). It is similar for men, but for the most part, men carry their fat in their mid section (beer belly anyone?)

Body Shape: No two bodies are the same. Two people can have the same body fat distribution, but be shaped differently. Think of this as comparing a runway model vs. a gymnast. Quick question: Which would you date? See now who’s vain?

Age: Most devices that measure body fat show higher body fat levels as age increases. With ageing, visceral fat (around the organs) and intramuscular fat tends to go up. For example, a 19 year old man and a 55 year old man may have the same subcutaneous body fat measurement (that’s the fat under the skin), but the 19 year old may be 15% and the 55 year old will be at 20%.

Muscle Striations: Muscle is seen more clearly as people become more defined. Muscle takes on the look of thin rods which are called striations.

Vascularity: As your body fat decreases, veins are more easily visible.

Male Celebrities at Different Body Fat Percentages

Men at 3-4% Body Fat

Body builders scare me, and not just because they can beat me up. They can get to body fat levels as low as 3-4%. That’s extreme. This body fat level results in severe vascularity (visibility of the veins). This is why the veins seem to almost pop out of their skin (and they seem pissed all the time). One is able to see each muscle and its striations. Even the tush has striations, some vascularity, and very little fat (“open me some walnuts, please”). 2% is the least amount of fat a man needs for the body to function and the hardest to maintain.

Men at 6-7% Body Fat

A man with 6-7% body fat is not quite as extreme as the earlier example (think of a fitness model instead of a body builder), but it is still quite difficult to maintain. At this level, the face becomes thin, muscles defined, and veins become pronounced on the arms, legs and abs.

Men at 8-12% Body Fat

10-12% is a level most men are able to maintain without too much suffering except for the possible enjoyment of pizza. Men at this level of body fat have defined abdominal muscles, but not too much separation between the muscles. There may be some striations on the shoulders and arms, but not all over the body. There may be some vascularity on the arms, and maybe a little on the legs. Think of this as your classic chiseled beach body.

Men at 13-15% Body Fat

A man at 15% body fat level is considered €œlean and fit€. One can see the outlines of muscle, but there is no clear separation between them. There should be little vascularity or striations since they are covered by a thin layer of fat. Think shapely, but not overtly defined (or as women in our office call this “Yum”).

Men at 20% Body Fat

I’d say that 20% is your typical healthy male. The separation between the muscles starts to disappear, and few veins or striations are visible. There may be a small stomach pouch of fat. Most of my active friends are within the 20-25% body fat range. Sadly this is a fading demographic globally.

Men at 25% Body Fat

At this level of body fat, there is little to no separation of muscles, no vascularity, or muscle striations. The waist begins to get larger (and larger) with a waist to hip ratio as high as 0.9 (waist circumference/hip circumference). Fat will start accumulating on the neck, but with a correctly fitted suit, nobody will know about that 25%. This is the danger zone, once a man is over 25% body fat he is considered obese (and a 40+ inch waist is considered abdominal obesity.)

Men at 30% Body Fat

At 30% body fat, there is no muscle separation, and there is visible fat in unusual places like the back, thighs, and calves. The waist ends up looking bigger than the hips, and the stomach sticks out over the waist. Aging rock stars also tend to split their pants more often on stage.

Men at 35% Body Fat

At this level of body fat, most fat gathers around the stomach, think of the beer gut (or male pregnancy). If your waist circumferences is 40+ inches at 35% body fat, you probably fit into this category. It may be a good idea to see your doctor at this point since this level of body fat percentage is associated with heart disease, diabetes, and other diseases.

Men at 40% Body Fat

At this body fat percentage, more fat accumulates in the stomach and waist (think of a 45-inch waist). At this dangerous level, everyday tasks like taking the stairs, or bending over to pick something up becomes troublesome. This body fat level is close to the morbidly obese range (BMI 35+).

Body Fat Picture Descriptions Of Women Celebrities

10-12% is an extremely low body fat level typically attained by female bodybuilders (see the difference between Chyna and J-Lo). Essential fat for women is higher than men because women have more fat in breast tissue and the areas around the uterus. This level of body fat is not considered safe by doctors. Once women reach this level, they may reach a state of amenorrhea (be unable to menstruate). At this incredibly low level of fat, striations of muscle, separation between muscles, and clear vascularity are to be expected. I won’t judge but if you get to this level you should have a conversation with your dealer…I mean doctor.

Women at 15-17% Body Fat

This is still considered a quite a low level of body fat for women (the equivalent of the 6-7% body fat for range men). Many swimsuit and fitness models attain this body fat level and will be afflicted with amenorrhea. At this level, there is muscle definition in the abs, legs, arms, and shoulders is apparent. Veins will be somewhat pronounced (vascularity) and there will be some separation between muscles.

Women at 20-22% Body Fat

At this level, most women are considered “fit and healthy” by their doctors. If you are at this percentage, you are most likely an athlete or exercise on a regular basis. There will be some definition in the abs, a little body fat on the arms and legs, and minimal separation between muscles. Think catalog not runway.

Women at 25% Body Fat

This is your average woman; neither too slim, nor overweight. This body type is curvaceous in the hips with more fat in the butt and thighs. Also a dying body shape as people enjoy collecting percentages.

Women at 30% Body Fat

While the average male collects fat around the tummy, body fat on most women accumulates in the hips, butt, and thighs. At 30% body fat, a woman will be on the upper scale of average, but closer to overweight. The hips, thighs, and butt will be more pronounced and round. This is Sir Mixalot’s favorite percentage group. He wrote a song about it.

Women at 35% Body Fat

At 35% , the hips widen and the face/neck area becomes more round. Hip circumference is usually around 40+ inches and waist circumference about 32+ inches. This is when the belly starts protruding over the waist. Hence the newfound popularity of mommy pants. “Better then a girdle”

Women at 40% Body Fat

At this body fat percentage, there will definitely be some health issues. The hips and thighs grow to a circumference of 42+ inches, the waist to 35+ inches, and thighs 25+ inches. I’ll mark this as dangerous but I am NOT a doctor.

Ideal Body Fat Percentage Chart: ACE

The chart below from the American Council on Exercise (ACE) is one of the most commonly used body fat charts. Women tend to have a higher body fat percentage than men due to physiological differences such as hormones, breasts, and sexual organs. Women also need a higher amount of body fat in order to ovulate.

The medical field still argues over the perfect amount of body fat for optimal health. Research by Gallgher et. al. in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2000) came to the following conclusions:
Men 20-40 years old with under 8% body fat are considered €œunderfat€ (unhealthy)

Men 20-40 years old with under 8-19% body fat are considered healthy

Women 20-40 years old with under 21% body fat are considered €œunderfat€ (unhealthy)

Women 20-40 years old with under 21-33% body fat are considered healthy

I’m not a doctor (and I don’t play one on this blog). I think body fat is just one measure of health. Stating a certain body fat level is €œunhealthy€ may not be accurate. If one looks at sumo wrestlers who have significant amounts of body fat, they have generally low cholesterol levels and live long, healthy lives. At the same time, one can’t assume that someone thin is healthy. A woman at 5’2″ at 100 lbs can still have high cholesterol. We come in different shapes, sizes, and fat distribution profiles, and it is up to you and your (real) doctor to determine what that balance is for you.

(CNN) — As movie stars and supermodels put their best foot forward on the silver screen or the red carpet, they make sure to flaunt their hips, abs and arms, too.

Hillary Swank, one of Valerie Waters’ clients, trained for “Million Dollar Baby” for three months — four hours a day, six days a week.

Hailed by magazines and television shows as the standards of beauty and fitness, celebrities seem to have bodies the average American could never attain.

According to the National Institutes of Health, the average American woman has between 22 and 25 percent body fat, and the average man between 17 and 19 percent, putting both men and women above their recommended percentages and out of synch with the svelte celebrity standard.

CNN recently spoke with five celebrity trainers, who, without hesitation, say their star clients have to work just as hard as anyone else to achieve their weight loss and fitness goals. The main difference between training a celebrity and training any other client, they say, is scheduling.

“The only difference is possibly the hour that I’m training them,” said Valerie Waters, who trains celebrities like Kate Beckinsale and Cindy Crawford.

Waters said that when her celebrity clients aren’t working on a project, she’s able to train them during regular business hours. However, when they’re filming a movie, schedules can get crazy. “I’ve often trained Jennifer Garner at four o’clock in the morning,” Waters said.

Michael George, who helps tone Reese Witherspoon and Tobey Maguire, said the only difference between training celebrity clients and other clients is often a tighter deadline.

“If I have to get them ready for a project and I’ve only got six weeks, or two months, that’s a lot more pressure on them than it would be to just get ready for the summer to wear a bikini, or for overall health and maintenance,” he said.

“It’s different for someone with a nude scene coming up on September 22, the script’s already done and the story board is laid out,” said celebrity trainer Gunnar Peterson, who has worked with Jennifer Lopez, Angelina Jolie and Matthew McConaughey.

“You’ve got to work backward from specific goal dates,” Peterson said. His challenge is to come up with effective, time-restricted workout programs and then translate them into something more permanent after filming deadlines come and go.

Fine-tuning the ‘Perfect 10’
So, what kinds of fitness goals do celebrities have when they already seem to have the perfect package?

“Please tell everybody it’s not true!” Waters said. “They have to work for it too. And it only seems like that because you’re seeing them after they’ve been on an exercise program for a month.”

“A lot of celebrities are in good shape or look pretty good when they call me to work with them, because they are their own product,” George said. “As such they have to look good, and the better they look, typically, they will make more money. That’s the way Hollywood sort-of works.”

Ashley Borden, who’s worked with Mandy Moore and Christina Aguilera, said looks can be deceiving.

When celebrities are seen on the red carpet, “Everything is styled, fit, planned to emphasize the positive,” Borden said.

“They’re a human being just like everybody else,” she said. “Except for the fact that most of them make more of an income than you or I do on a day-to-day basis, so they have more access to help. But certain people are celebrities because they’re genetic celebrities. That’s why you’re a supermodel, because you’re a genetic celebrity. They didn’t hire you because you’re the smartest person in the room, you just happen to get the best look.”

Although debates about sickly skinny models center around their unhealthy habits, Waters said people with naturally slim bodies need to maintain their gazelle-like shapes through exercise and a healthy diet.

“Even supermodels have to work out. You may have nice long legs or whatever, but if you want to have muscle tone, you need to lift weights,” Waters said. “It doesn’t stay toned unless you’re fourteen.”

Waters has trained with Cindy Crawford for 15 years, and said, “You don’t get much more genetically perfect than that.”

“And yet Cindy works out with me three times a week,” she said, “through work, through babies, pregnancy, post-pregnancy. And she does it. I think she’s quoted as saying, in her 20s she had the body God gave her, in her 30s she had the body that she worked for.”

Not all celebrities consistently look perfect. Like many people, they become pregnant, develop health problems or take poor care of themselves, and end up out of shape.

“A lot of times I get calls from production companies, directors or producers, or the clients themselves, and they call me because they’re in really desperate need of changing their body and lifestyle,” George said.

The approach
Celebrity trainers have various philosophies when it comes to training, but most tailor their regimens to fit seamlessly into their clients’ hectic lives.

Celebrity trainers create a plan their clients can stick to, with exercises that can be done out of the gym while traveling or on location, and diet plans that accommodate night after night of fundraisers and awards show dinners. Here’s how some of them do it:

Valerie Waters
Training philosophy: “Get in, get out, get a life.” Waters’ workouts last less than an hour, incorporating circuit training with weights and a “kitchen purge” to clear out bad food which she replaces with healthy options.
Best tip: “Don’t be afraid of weights. They’re the quickest way to change your body”

Gunnar Peterson
Training philosophy: Peterson creates different workouts for different clients every day. He has clients eat protein early in the day, making breakfast the largest meal and dinner the smallest.
Best tip: “Get on a regular routine. Exercise should be a cornerstone of your life, like brushing your teeth. It’s not even an option to blow it off.”

Ashley Borden
Training philosophy: As one of Karl List’s master trainers, Borden focuses on mio-fascial release, or deep tissue stretching; biomechanics with resistance and balance exercises; cardio, proper water intake and diet. She suggests drinking 100 ounces or water a day and gives her clients cardio homework, which they track using a heart rate monitor.
Best tip: Take care of the arches in your feet. “When your arches collapse, your knees rotate inward, and your hips rotate outward giving you a saddlebag appearance. It then pulls your sternum down, it pulls your neck forward, and everything collapses.” She suggests orthotics and mio-fascial release to combat chronic pain and posture problems.

Michael George
Training philosophy: George varies his workouts to keep clients engaged. He borrows from Eastern and Western philosophies, using martial arts, yoga, Pilates and meditation in conjunction with strength training. He saves time by using multiple muscle groups in each exercise, like a squat with a bicep curl. He also incorporates pliometrics and core boards.
Best tip: Don’t wait too long to integrate a healthy diet and consistent exercise into your days. “I’ve seen a lot of people come to me when it’s a little bit too late,” he said, “I’ve had pass away due to illnesses, cancer, heart disease, whatever it may be. The time is now. If you don’t put your health first you’re never really going to truly be happy.”

Bob Greene
Training philosophy: Greene tries to look at the entire individual and get clients to visualize how doing all the exercises he suggests will improve their lives. He says the physical benefits are almost meaningless if they don’t translate to “you having a better life overall … especially those areas not related to fitness.”
Best tip: “First thing is, know what you want,” Greene said. He said a lot of people want to work out because it’s “in” or they know they should be doing it, but don’t have a specific goal. “Know the reason you are making these changes in your habits, what is it you really want to achieve.” He also said most people need to do both weight training and cardio. Celebrities are well known for having plenty of cash.

With money beeing no object, you would expect them to have the top personal trainers and the world’s best chefs to make them train each day and eat the most tasty healthy dishes, that will give them the perfect body.

If you judge their body mass index and fat percentage, the results show a different story. Body mass index or “BMI” compares the height and weight to measure a person’s body fat percentage and places them in four categories: under average weight – 18.5 or lower, normal weight of the average person is between – 18.5 and 24.9, for the overweight it is between 25 and 29.9, and the obese category is 30 and upwards. Let’s take a look at some celebrities below and compare their body mass index.

● Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie’s BMI is said to be around 18. Coming in at 18 shows she is underweight and could do with putting some pounds on.


Always being known as one of the most beautiful ladies in the world must have some added pressures to keep yourself thin but having six children running about is bound to keep you fit, but being the role model for many children worldwide, she needs to put on a little weight in our opinion.

● Arnold Schwarzenegger

For much of his life Arnold “I’ll be back” Schwarzenegger has been the poster celebrity person for health and fitness.

With Arnold’s BMI set at 30.8, this makes him into the obese category! We don’t think he should be signing up for celebrity fat club just yet, as the results are slightly misleading. You see, with a very large muscle mass, it makes the BMI incorrect.

The BMI scale has been around since the 1800’s so maybe someone needs to sit down and have a rethink.

● Beyonce

Is there anything that we can find a flaw in with, Beyonce?

We tried with the BMI and failed. She has a body mass index of 22, which is exactly where anyone would want to be, which beggars the question, why does, Beyonce, look so curvy around other celebrities?

The other models and actresses must be well underweight.

  • Serena Williams

Serena Williams is well known for her strong and tough physic. Her BMI stands at a great 22.

Perfectly located in the average section. Some have mentioned her “manly body” but Standing at 5 feet 9 inches, and weighing in at 150 pounds, Serena has a whole lot of muscle and almost zero body fat. Almost the perfect specimen in terms for BMI.

● Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise has always looked small and slim in all his blockbuster movies, but where does him body mass index stand at?

At a BMI of 26, Tom is considered in the overweight category. As he is almost reaching the mid-fifties, we can let him off for the extra added pounds over the years.
