Affordable Wellness Retreats That’ll Give You The Perfect New Year Reset

Indulge In Some Pampering

©Indian Springs

If mud baths and massages are your idea of luxury, the Indian Springs resort in Calistoga, California will be your paradise. Stay for $220 a night and plan to get pampered.

“The hot springs in Calistoga have drawn visitors since the Wappo people built sweat lodges over steam vents 8,000 years ago,” explains Stocking. “For those seeking the ultimate pampering experience, check yourself into Indian Springs for a mud bath and mineral water soak, followed by a deep tissue massage you’ll be dreaming about for months afterwards. It’s the perfect jumping-off point for exploring the vineyards of Napa Valley, where you can wake up early and take in the sunrise from a hot air balloon.”

Become Inspired

If the stresses of life have you feeling uninspired, visit an exotic locale and surround yourself with other creatives at The Storyteller Within retreat in San Marcos La Laguna, Guatemala. For $1,795 (which is $225 a day), you’ll get an all-inclusive, eight-night refresh to get those ideas flowing. The next event starts at the end of June, but for those seeking a spark, it’s worth the wait.

“Set in guesthouses on the beautiful shores of Lake Atitlán, this women-only retreat focuses on self-exploration through writing,” says Stocking. “The workshops have been described as nothing short of ‘transformative,’ nurturing feelings of genuine sisterhood among guests. In the evenings, you can practice yoga or experiment with sound healing and other local Mayan traditions.”

Now hear this: Wellness isn’t just for well-to-do one-percenters. Increasingly, self-care has become accessible to everyone, whether that’s through a free meditation app or a bike-share program. But there’s one aspect of health and wellness that still feels reserved for the ultra-rich — the restorative getaway. Plenty of seasoned travelers think that a sunny, unplugged vacation full of healthy food, feel-good exercise, and quality hammock time is solely for folks with private-jet money. Don’t believe it. At Oyster, we know that restful, healthy getaways come in all budgets. And there are plenty of properties where you can recharge your batteries for the price of a road trip. Check out our eight favorites below.

1. The Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort, Costa Rica

Costa Rica’s Nosara region could rival Los Angeles for number of yoga studios per capita. This surfing mecca has drawn the healthy-living set in droves, and they’re often making a beeline for The Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort. The resort offers no fewer than six yoga shalas (both open-air and air-conditioned), a modern fitness center with classes like barre and Pilates, and a restaurant and juice bar serving up organic foods. While guests can keep active with workouts and surf lessons, they can also doze by the pool or grab a hammock for the afternoon. Double and triple rooms with shared bathrooms keep rates lower than a roadside Holiday Inn.

2. Aqua Wellness Resort, Nicaragua

Nicaragua might not be the first destination that comes to mind when you’re hunting for a healthy getaway, but this affordable, eco-friendly resort should change that. The property itself is a “Swiss Family Robinson” fantasy complete with treetop rooms and a white-sand beach. Group yoga classes, included in rates, make the most of this backdrop with a platform overlooking the coastline. Freshly squeezed juices and plant-focused dishes are served at Bromelia Restaurant, but there’s still plenty of room for indulgence, as the on-site bakery turns out banana bread and cinnamon rolls. Guests can also treat themselves to lavish spa treatments such as a scrub made from local cocoa beans, yogurt, and honey. Rates are inexpensive enough that a private studio is less than the average airport hotel.

3. Natura Cabana Boutique Hotel & Spa, Dominican Republic

Parked on one of the Dominican Republic’s best beaches, Natura Cabana would be a restorative getaway just for its location alone. But combined with outstanding fresh food, regular yoga classes, and a fantastic spa, it’s hard to top. Guests can either get active — rolling out their yoga mats in the open-air pavilion, horseback riding on trails, or trekking to waterfalls — or they can nap on the beach or wander down garden paths. Both camps fuel up on dishes like airy pancakes and local coffee for breakfast and ceviche or sandwiches for lunch and dinner. Every room here comes decked out with a hammock or swing, and rates are regularly below the $200 mark.

You need a break. You’ve worked hard lately; you’re always connected; and you’re feeling a little burned out.

These are seven easy destinations for you and/or your family to unwind, disconnect, and recharge both body and mind. Better yet, none of them will break the bank. And in some cases, some of them are downright cheap.

Before booking your next wellness retreat, consider one of these:

Bluff Dwellings, Utah

You’ve heard of Bears Ears National Monument. Now see it for yourself from the area’s brand-new, gorgeously located, and perfectly arranged resort in Bluff, Utah. At Bluff Dwellings Resort (pictured), you can stay on-site for the pool, spa, and surrounding views, or drive 30 minutes to hike or off-road in the new national monument, river raft the Grand Canyon-like San Juan with family, or take in the timeless Monument Valley in nearby Navajo Nation. Far away from the crowds of the rest of Southern Utah, Bluff Dwellings is a fantastic place to lose yourself during an extended mountain stay.

Huntington Surf Inn, California

Long revered for its beginner-friendly and expert breaks, Hunting Beach is and will forever be “Surf City, USA.” But whereas Southern California can be notoriously expensive, the Huntington Surf Inn is as affordable as it is accessible to the beach—just a few minutes’ walk to both the waves and International Surfing Museum. Award-winning amenities include comfortable and colorful rooms, free wifi, parking, complimentary beach toys, and big screen TVs with premium cable to binge on. From here the perfect wave is within reach.

The Fox Den, Montana

Welcome to one of the finest rental properties within minutes of Yellowstone National Park, the world’s first national park and still one of the best places to go off grid. This five-star rated “superhost” Airbnb is located in the woods of Soda Butte Creek with easy access to decks with spectacular views, hot-tub overlooking the creek, and many of Cooke City’s best hiking trails. Feather beds, hardwood floors, and full kitchens make staying in a must, but with so much of the great outdoors nearby, you’ll also want to explore. In addition to hiking, fishing, biking, and snowmobiling, be sure to drive the nearby Beartooth Highway, which is considered one of the most scenic drives in America.

Casablanca Resort, Nevada

If sunbathing by a fantastic, palm tree-lined pool all day replete with waterfall, kids slide, hot tub, and an immense amount of playing room appeals to you, look no further than Casablanca Resort in Mesquite, Nevada. Better yet, this five-star pool at a three-star hotel ranges from $40–70 per night, depending on the season and weekend. What’s more, there’s a lot of great golf courses and hiking trails nearby if that’s your thing. Make no mistake – the rooms and casino are about as bare bones as they come. But you’d be hard pressed to find a better desert oasis on a budget than here.

Ocean Village, Dominican Republic

While most tourists flock to the resort-filled Punta Cana, you’ll find a lot more affordability, fewer crowds, and more authentic Dominican adventures, food, and culture in Puerto Plata. On a recent visit to Ocean Village, I swam at the on-site private pool, took several naps on the sundeck hammock, lounged around at the nearby beach resort and infinity pool, and even surfed with locals using Airbnb’s new Experience listings. Beautiful, relaxing, and affordable are all three adjectives that perfectly describe Puerto Plata.

The Inn at Thorn Hill, New Hampshire

Like Southern California, New England can be prohibitively expensive. That’s not the case at The Inn at Thorn Hill, however; this budget stay is a 2019 TripAdvisor Traveler’s Choice winner located in the famously beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire. “The perfect couple’s getaway,” “One of the 10 most romantic inns in North America,” and “Most amazing B&B ever” have all been used to describe the four-diamond lodge. With loads of free amenities, namely parking, internet, hot tub, spa, fitness center, and breakfast, there’s a lot to love about this beautiful property.

Hallmark Resort, Oregon

Few places on Earth are more timeless, rejuvenating, and/or romantic than Cannon Beach, Oregon. And few places on Cannon Beach are better than the award-winning but still affordable Hallmark Resort & Spa. As the closest hotel to the iconic and Goonies-famous Haystack Rock, this oceanfront property offers panoramic views of one of the most stunning and deepest beaches on the planet. With a variety of rooms to fit a variety of budgets, you’ll never be more than a few steps away from the sand, homemade lobby cookies, and endless scenery.

You’re working hard to secure the bag but you’re still human and in need of a break. Life can come at you so fast that you can forget the importance of taking a minute to woosah. Incorporating healthy holistic practices like yoga and meditation into your daily regimen can aid you in manifesting peace and good health into your busy, #BossQueen life. But a wellness retreat gives you the perfect opportunity to do both while also unplugging, relaxing, and hitting a reset button on your life.

A wellness retreat typically includes events and activities tailored to help you heal, relax, and refocus your intentions. In fact, Wellness Retreats continue to grow increasingly popular each year. According to the Global Wellness Institute, worldwide wellness was a $4.2 trillion industry in 2017, with $639 billion dedicated to “wellness tourism.”

While our mental health is important, so too are our budgets, and wellness retreats can cost a pretty penny. However, there are more affordable options for holistic retreats all around the world. So if you’re looking to namasté while not breaking the bank, below are 5 affordable wellness retreats for our ladies seeking to heal the mind, body and spirit.

A vacation is great, a yoga retreat is even better. While they often seem pricey, retreats simply offer more value than traveling on your own. Not only do you get to chill in a zen location for a few days, but the retreat package price typically includes vegetarian, possibly organic meals, meditation and yoga classes, personal growth workshops, excursions, airport transfers, and even an occasional spa treatment.

For the best deal, bring a friend (or, make new ones) to share a room with. “You can typically save around 25 percent by sharing dorm-style accommodations,” says Sean Kelly, co-founder of BookRetreats.com, a yoga retreat booking site. “It makes sense that staying in a private room is going to cost more.”

Planning ahead can also save you between $100 and $500, depending on the price of the retreat. These early-bird specials are listed about two to three months prior to departure, Kelly adds. Keep in mind that some early-bird specials are given to the first few spots, and once they are filled, everyone else pays the full price.

If you’re on a really tight budget, reach out to the retreat leader to see if there is any room for negotiation—a rustic location may give you a slight discount if you bring your own tent, or perhaps you can ask about bundle pricing if you sign up with a few friends. “It doesn’t hurt to ask, and you may be surprised by a positive response,” Kelly says.

Ready to book a trip? We found some of the best retreat deals—from the mountains of Colorado to lush gardens of Thailand—that cost $250 per day or a lot less.

Wellness Retreats

Booking a wellness retreat should feel a bit like picking out your own birthday gift. You get to dig deep and look at all of the parts of yourself that need attention, love, and healing…

…then book the perfect wellness retreat to tend to those parts. Don’t think for a second that this is some sort of indulgence, either. Self-care is an important part of wellness, just as important as food, sleep, shelter, and sex. If you’re like the rest of us, then you can easily get caught up in your role as an employee, a mother, a spouse…

…and quickly forget about you.

So answer me, honestly:

Are you getting enough sleep?

Are you getting good nutrition?

Are you getting enough attention?

Whatever your personal needs may be, tend to them. You can easily do this by committing to a wellness retreat, where the details are taken care of for you.

All you need to do is let go of the overwhelming task of responsibility and show up.

What to Expect at a Wellness Resort

Depending on your retreat, they may give you different options to choose from. Do yoga, enjoy the relaxing spa, go within using meditation, or even receive life coaching.

A wellness retreat may be perfect for you if:

  1. You would like a wonderful place to just relax and recharge your batteries

  2. You’d like peaceful surroundings to unwind and gather yourself again

  3. You want to be pampered a bit…because you deserve it 🙂

  4. You struggle to make time for yourself and get tied up with the dizzying amount of things you juggle

  5. You want to leave with a better You

You might come into your retreat feeling exhausted and frazzled…

…and leave feeling totally refreshed, energized, and focused.

So if you’re at your wit’s end and don’t have anything left to give, a week-long wellness retreat will serve you deeply.

Instead of spending a week just by the side of the beach, use it wisely and include those spa treatments.

Do that yoga.

Discover more about yourself with the meditations offered.

Indulge in wellness travel.

Be an active participant in your health and well-being and it could completely change the track of your life going forward.

It’s a life-changing experience that can help you realize you are worth it.

Investing in yourself is worth it.

How to Choose A Wellness Holiday

When it comes to health and wellness, it is important to take into account everything that truly encompasses “health and wellness”. Before booking yourself a luxurious detox spa retreat at one of the top spas in the US (for example), be sure to truly consider what it has to offer.

Does this health resort offer something for your physical needs, such as yoga, hiking, or gentle movements?

Does the retreat address your nutritional needs by offering a robust menu of new foods and dishes that you could emulate back home in your regular life?

Does it provide the spiritual inspection that we need as human beings, whether it’s through meditation, prayer, or self-help work?

Before booking with anyone, on Book Retreats or otherwise, be sure to really investigate what the retreat has to offer. This is so much more than a vacation or a quick spa getaway (though those are certainly nice!). Wellness retreats can move mountains so long as you consider all of the major factors.

…even other wellness resorts.

Believe me, I get it.

But heading to your very own wellness getaway shouldn’t cause more stress! Instead, let it work its magic on you so that you can finally take care of yourself exactly as you deserve.

So, to help you focus your health and wellness search a bit, let me tell you about the popular holistic retreats that thousands of deserving little yogis like yourself are currently booking.

Top Wellness Retreats

A wellness retreat may be exactly what you are looking for. Learn techniques to improve your health and well-being in daily life while indulging in spa treatments and delicious, nourishing meals. You can find beach retreats or retreats in Europe, each offering total health and wellness. Here are a few of our favorite…

Spiritual and Meditation Retreats

Meditation retreats offer a great opportunity to learn new skills that you can take back with you to impact a healthy lifestyle. They also often come with a healthy diet and yoga practice, ensuring that you have a holistic wellness experience during your retreat.

If you’re looking for something deeper and with more introspection, consider searching through our spiritual retreats. Many people find that wellness is best achieved through inner work and, to be honest, we believe the same. You will be surprised to see how much a spiritual retreat encompasses.

Wellness Retreats for Women

Women all over the world have got the same idea about retreats and women’s retreats are popping up in response. It is a truly beautiful force that is growing as women reach out to one another for strength, courage, and compassion. Take this opportunity to expand your tribe while also giving yourself the cleansing you deserve. Because women’s wellness spans much further than weight loss, fitness classes, and detox. No, women’s wellness is a holistic approach to everyday life. It includes yoga and meditation, sure, but it includes things that can help you live a healthy lifestyle. Like massage treatments, delicious vegetarian meals, daily yoga classes, outdoor activities, workshops for personal growth, and connecting with other guests. It includes wellness on the inside and out. Health and well-being of the mind, body, and soul. If you’re a woman then you deserve all of that, don’t you?

Relaxation Retreats

We live in a time where stress is the norm and relaxation seems like a naughty activity. That doesn’t mean that we don’t need it, though. With our constant sense of urgency these days, it is super important to remember to relax. It is good to give your body and mind a rest for a bit, nurturing it back to a happy and calm homeostasis. Luckily, wellness tourism has become super popular in recent years, making it easier than ever to find a retreat center to escape to for a bit. Reset your mind and body on a relaxation retreat this year. You deserve it.

Emotional Healing Retreats

Our fast-paced world has our hearts working overtime as we move from one stressor to the next, never fully processing all that baggage that comes our way. Rather than pushing emotions under the proverbial rug, many people are taking the time to fully heal from past traumas in the structure of a retreat. Many of them even bring in licensed therapists to run workshops or lead group therapy sessions and breakout sessions. There are certainly varying levels among the retreats, but it is worth checking out.

Holistic Retreats

Many of us in the wellness industry fully believe that wellness is a holistic endeavor. In these holistic retreats, you will find all areas of yourself tended to with equal care. Yoga classes may be offered to nourish the body. Meditation classes to nourish the mind. Cooking classes to feed your cells and tincture classes to treat your illnesses. Every corner of your innermost self will be caressed back to health in these kinds of retreats.

Spa Resort Vacation Packages

Many people don’t have much vacation time to take a total wellness vacation like we very much deserve. The solution? Combine your vacation with your wellness retreat. Many retreat centers are offering all-inclusive resort packages so that way all you have to do is show up. Many of these include meals, spa services, yoga courses, cooking lessons, and more. The cool part is that many spa resorts will also offer yoga and pilates classes, giving you the opportunity to literally have a life-changing experience. Want more details? Check out our blog post on the best luxury yoga retreats in the world to find the perfect luxury wellness experience for you.

Detox Spa Retreats

The seriously intense detox retreats offer all of the goodies that you’ve only read about in blogs. Infrared saunas, coffee enemas, juice cleanses, reiki, acupuncture, and more can be achieved at a detox spa retreat. Take the time off to cleanse your body while also getting hands-on educational experience.

Mental Health Spa Retreats

Sometimes we need a little bit of tuning up on our mental health capacities (okay, a lot of the time). This doesn’t necessarily mean that we need to go on vacation to dig up some serious past traumas, but it can still offer quite a bit of healing opportunities. Many mental health retreats offer workshops on how to deal with stress, exercises to better respond to stressful situations, and education on healthy coping mechanisms. Many will offer daily yoga and meditation sessions to help you develop centeredness before heading back home (to the chaos). Because if you take care of your emotional well-being, then you are truly caring for your long-term health. There is truly powerful stuff happening at these retreats and it is certainly encompassed under the realm of wellness.

Rejuvenating Wellness Spa Retreats

Wellness is a multi-faceted endeavor, to be sure, but that does not mean that you can’t do a little pampering along the way. Many yogis find the reprieve they are looking for in tropical climates such as in Costa Rica and Thailand. The vibrant yogi communities in these places will open a whole new world of wellness to you, where coconuts come by the dozen and raw foods are a way of life. If you really want to experience wellness vacations in style, then look for an all-inclusive resort that has a wellness program built right into their menu. They’ll likely have a full-service spa, a gourmet chef to prepare healthy meals, and daily yoga and pilates classes to get your exercise on. If you go to Costa Rica, then your wellness resort will also be an eco-friendly resort, giving you an all-around incredible experience.

Weekend Wellness Yoga Retreats

We get it, not everyone has time for a week-long wellness retreat. That’s okay! It’s sort of a part of the give and take for being blessed with an abundant life, right? So get yourself to a weekend getaway that offers all the same perks as a longer wellness retreat. Look for a wellness program at a nearby retreat center that offers daily yoga classes, wellness treatments, and healthy meals for your very own weekend getaway. Check out an area near you or zip over to a nearby city that you have yet to explore. Thousands of yogis are doing exactly that, already! That’s why weekend getaways are one of the most popular searches for wellness retreats here at BookRetreats.

Wellness Fitness Retreat

There is something magical that happens when you focus on your wellness… You naturally become more fit, too. You’ll find that a lot of wellness centers will incorporate a fitness program in their programs. This way, guests can reach their fitness goals while also focusing on their health and well-being. Some may go as far as bringing in personal trainers to lead a boot camp, while others may simply offer fitness classes at their fitness center. Others still may lead a mountain trek in the great outdoors so that your fitness isn’t limited to a cramped fitness center. It’s also worth noting that if you attend a fitness retreat then you will likely be enjoying healthy meals alongside your workouts. Because being well and fit is not just about personal trainers and workouts, right? It’s about a healthy lifestyle, one that supports you in your quest to achieve those fitness goals. So head off to a fitness retreat to learn how to incorporate exercise into your everyday life, learn how to prepare your own healthy meals, and learn how to take care of your emotional well-being. Be fit, inside and out.

Courtesy Viceroy Central Park Viceroy Central Park’s Journey to Wellness

For as long as I’ve lived in New York City, I haven’t experienced peace and quiet. That’s not to say I don’t like living here. Quite the opposite, really. The problem is that sometimes you just need to find your very own personal zen. That can be hard to do when you work here, must fall asleep listening to every sound your neighbors make, and ride the loudest underground train on Earth to get to and from work.

I’m sure that visitors find the city even more jarring than I still do, even as a seasoned New Yorker. Whether you’re coming here for fun or business, it’s one of America’s biggest tourist attractions, in part thanks to the Statue of Liberty, the Freedom Tower, and of course, Central Park.

To me, Central Park is comprised of Sheepshead Meadow and that’s about it. You can thank summer Fridays and bottles of rosé for that. To visitors, it’s a confusingly vast expanse of greenery in the middle of honking horns, fast walkers, and the setting of every/any movie ever made.

Whether you’re a permanent resident or a traveling visitor, you deserve to take a breather. A lot of people can find that through activities that leave you – well, out of breath. My chosen stress-relief method is SoulCycle. For others, it’s yoga. Some choose running. No matter what you love to do, you should be able to do it, even in the busiest city on Earth.

After a weekend fitness retreat at the Viceroy Hotel in Central Park, I’ve finally located my zen. And surprisingly enough, it’s actually right in the middle of the park.

The Viceroy offers active, fitness-minded visitors an option that’s equal parts NYC tour and equal parts wellness retreat.

The hotel’s Journey to Wellness package gives you a bit of zen thanks to a partnership with Fit Tours NYC and Nomi Beauty. For $509 and up, you can score a night in their superior king accommodations, a healthy breakfast at Kingside, a Fit Tour experience of your choice, handy workout essentials from Routinely, and the choice of an in-room massage or beauty service from Nomi.

I chose to take on a night at the Viceroy with a bit of skepticism: How the hell would I be able to not only enjoy a night in a hotel amid all the hustle and bustle and then find relaxation on a yoga walking tour of the tourist-ridden park?

Turns out, I actually found my new happy place.

View this post on Instagram

Oh no, we didn’t have any fun on our Sunrise Yoga Walk this morning. None at all. Seriously….Wait, well maybe just a little!😁🤣😁 #bestjobever

A post shared by Fit Tours NYC (@fittoursnyc) on Oct 28, 2018 at 1:44pm PDT

The Viceroy’s accommodations are not only five-star, but the combination of their internal and external services makes for a pretty serene experience. Thanks to a good massage and a nice room, you feel like you’re in paradise – no honking horns in earshot.

Even better, the team at Fit Tours NYC knows how to move at a New Yorker’s pace, but without sacrificing info or technique. I ultimately was grateful I’d woken up early and ventured into the Central Park to contort my body for basic yoga moves, which is something I never thought I’d say. I walked away knowing way more about the part of the city that feels like my backyard than I’d ever thought I would. And if I do it again, I’d love to try their other workout options, just to test my own limits and learn a bit more.

Turns out there is peace and quiet in New York City. You’ve just got to find it. The Viceroy is here to help.

California has long been a mecca for travelers seeking a higher level of health, fitness, and inner peace. In fact, the term “wellness” was popularized here in the late 1970s. Retreats can be found all across the Golden State, from the beachy yoga culture in Southern California to the breezily beautiful Central Coast and remote northern regions. Don’t worry—it’s not all sweat lodges and wheatgrass shots. An increasing number of hotels and tour groups offer fresh twists on the traditional fitness vacation with plenty of luxurious and unexpected additions. Whether you’re looking to unwind on horseback, exercise around the clock, or explore vibrant marine life, we’ve rounded up some of the most interesting ways to hit reset in the Golden State, given here from north to south.

Ricochet Ridge Ranch, Fort Bragg

Horseback riding as salve for the body and mind is a practice as old as Ancient Greece. The Ricochet Ridge Ranch in Fort Bragg offers a thoroughly modern six-day retreat with full-day rides along Mendocino County’s coastal trails and sandy surf. If watching rather than riding is more your speed, book a private tour at the Return to Freedom sanctuary in Lompoc where 400 wild horses and 29 burros roam free.

Relax with yoga and wine

Westerbeke Ranch, Sonoma

It’s all about balance at this Sonoma retreat. Body Flows hosts regular retreats at the stunning Westerbeke Ranch in Sonoma. On MT Sobek’s California Coast to Crest Women’s Adventure, you’ll hike through the redwoods of Muir Woods, along the cliffs of Point Reyes National Seashore, through the backcountry of Jack London State Park, and up to the waterfalls, domes, and sequoias of Yosemite National Park—all in one eight-day trip. Hikes vary from 2–9.5 miles and can depend on the weather, but you’re sure to see some of the most jaw-dropping natural sights that California has to offer. Meals are all included, including picnics in idyllic locations, as well as a tour of Sonoma’s Benziger Family Winery.

Be fully present

La Playa Hotel, Carmel-by-the-Sea

The historic La Playa Carmel plays host to Mindful-by-the-Sea retreats, guided by renowned psychologist and mindfulness expert Rich Fernandez. The three-day experience promises improved clarity and relaxation. Accommodations are not included, so guests can choose to stay at the romantic La Playa or anywhere they’d like.

Play all day at family summer camp

Carmel Valley Ranch, Carmel Valley

Just like the summer camp you remember, but year-round and with luxurious accommodations and zero teen angst. At Carmel Valley Ranch, guests stay on 500 acres of vineyards and hiking trails in Carmel Valley. The one- to four-bedroom guest suites, perfect for a couple or the whole family, include fireplaces and private-deck soaking tubs. Fill the days with nonstop (albeit optional) activities, such as hiking, tennis, golf, archery, beekeeping, and more.

Embark on an ocean safari

Base Camp Channel Islands, Channel Islands

Jacques Cousteau meets Deepak Chopra at Base Camp Channel Islands, a five-day cruise offered by Lindblad Expeditions–National Geographic. Passengers will get up close with some of the marine creatures and animals inhabiting Channel Islands National Park’s largely untouched coastal ecosystem offshore between Ventura and Santa Barbara. When you’re not marveling at the wonders of the island foxes, sea lions, and dolphins, you can enjoy guided hikes, yoga and fitness classes, lectures from naturalists, and one-on-one photography lessons.

Detox like a celebrity

The Ashram, Calabasas

For nearly 45 years, The Ashram, nestled in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains, has been putting Hollywood elite through the wringer. Julia Roberts, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Oprah have all reportedly signed up for the weeklong program, which starts each day with a 5:30 a.m. “gentle knock on your door” before challenging guests to tackle multiple fitness classes per day and 10-plus-mile hikes, fueled only by plant-based meals. (Explore other toxin-releasing resorts: California Detox Retreats.)

Soak in a desert oasis

Two Bunch Palms, Desert Hot Springs

Two Bunch Palms has beckoned famous faces to the middle of the desert for more than 75 years. A former favorite of Al Capone, the resort has more recently hosted Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Madonna, and more. Thanks to natural aquifers found in Desert Hot Springs (30 minutes outside of Palm Springs), guests can soak in healing mineral water under the shade of tamarisk trees. The spa menu encourages adventure through unique therapies, including water shiatsu, sound vibration healing, and a shaman-lead class designed to find your spirit.

Ride waves, then stretch

Surf & Stay, San Diego

Up your fitness, SoCal-style, with a Surf & Stay retreat in San Diego. And after all that trekking, you’ll love a soak in the resort’s indoor and outdoor seasonal pools. No need to compromise your creature comforts to have an adventurous outdoor retreat.
