Last month the pay gap issue hit headlines again, after five key members of the world champion U.S. women’s national soccer team accused the U.S. Soccer Federation of wage discrimination. According to “Today,” when the women’s team took out the World Cup in 2015, they only took home $2 million in prize money to be distributed to the players and the organization. Meanwhile the men’s team, earned $9 million, despite failing to actually win anything. (As an FYI, Germany won the men’s cup, and they took home a mind-boggling $35 million.) Keep in mind that a record 26.7 million people in America tuned in to watch the women’s team crush Japan in the World Cup final, and they’ve taken home three straight Olympic gold medals and three World Cup titles. Also keep in mind that the guy’s team hasn’t won either.

Alex Morgan is one of the most vocal female athletes on the national soccer team on the issue of equal pay, and is one of America’s most prominent advocates of women’s sport. She’s a bona fide sporting superstar, sponsored by everyone from Nike to Chobani, and became the youngest player on the national team at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup when she was just 22-years-old. She then went on to score the winning goal at the London Olympics in a semifinal game against Canada the following year, and hit headlines every year.

So with the countdown to the Rio Olympic Games officially on, we chatted with Morgan to find out the food and fitness plan she’s following right now, the biggest issues she sees facing women in sports, and a couple of her favorite healthy recipes.

The biggest issues facing women in sports right that I’m most passionate about are: The pay discrepancy and the fact that FIFA isn’t paying as much attention to women. Also, the fact that we play on turf, and the men have never played any international major tournaments on turf, they play on grass. We need to get more women in higher positions in FIFA, and to grow the women’s game globally.

I’m preparing for the Rio Olympics by: I’ve been playing with my club team in Orlando for most of this year so far , and with national team we’ve had more than 10 games togethers so far, right now, so just continuing to have good games and continuing to stay fit.

My favorite workout is: Of course playing soccer, but if I’m not doing that, either circuit training or doing stations like a couple of minutes each so you get a full body workout in an hour. doing rope work with a big rope, and ball work. I train every day, and usually I have one day off every week. They range from two hours to three-and-a-half, maybe more. We’ll train more if we’re in pre-season.

The health trend I just can’t get behind is: I’m all about moderation, and I don’t like restrictive diets or to really restrict myself too much. I feel like what you put in your body is the energy and output you’re going to get so that’s very important for athletes.

For breakfast I have: Chobani yogurt with some toppings like fruit or granola, or maybe some agave. If I’m not training, I usually make a smoothie with fruit and yogurt. I usually eat at around 8 a.m.

For lunch I have: I normally have a salad or a sandwich with some fruit, and chicken or lean meat. Or again, I might have a smoothie. I eat anytime after training, as soon as I’m done, which is usually around 12 p.m. or 1 p.m.

My go-to smoothie recipe includes: Fruit like berries, bananas, and spinach, yogurt, sometimes granola, agave or some honey, and either water or apple juice. And I like to put chia seed and hemp seed in it too.

Today I snacked on: Some fruit, and sometimes I carry with my nuts, or like Chobani yogurt, maybe one of their flip yogurts because they’re a good source of energy and have a good amount of protein.

The health and fitness apps I used are: One that syncs to my Polar watch, and I have the Nike Training app, there are a ton, but they’re the two main ones.

The one thing I’d never eat is: There’s not anything I wouldn’t necessarily touch. I’m not super picky.

On Instagram, I like to follow: Mostly soccer players, to be honest.

The three ingredients I always keep in my kitchen are: A good sea salt, extra virgin olive oil, and I like to make lean meat like chicken so I always have good seasonings.

My signature healthy dish is: A lot of times we’re so busy throughout the day I’ll just make something in the crockpot, and sometimes when I have extra time to put something together it’s usually some sort of meat and a lot of veggies. It’s pretty basic, but I like to incorporate fresh fruit and vegetables. I like to make my own hummus, which I make with Chobani yogurt. It’s really good.

The most-played songs on my workout playlist right now are: When I workout on my own it’s less pop or rap music, and more Vance Joy, Kings of Leon, Mumford and Sons, and The Lumineers. I listen to that really poppy or rap music when I’m with my teammates.

The best part about my job is: I love the fact that I’m able to use the platform that I have in order to really speak up about the topics I’m passionate about. What I do has a great impact on young girls, and for me it’s important to speak about important issues and to hold that responsibility for inspiring the next generation of athletes.

The health and fitness trend I tip to dominate 2016 is: I don’t know, I stick to my own kind of soccer routine, but when I’m not playing I love to do spin classes and yoga and stuff, and I think spin classes are really popular. It’s a great workout if you can get in 45 minute to an hour.

My favorite healthy restaurant is: I always like to find new restaurants and cafes in the cities that I’m visiting because I’m always traveling around.

Sure, spring just made its grand entrance, but before you know it, temps will rise and summer will be upon us beckoning a wardrobe change into something a little lighter than the bomber jacket and scarves you’ve got on heavy rotation at the moment. Yep, bikinis and short-shorts are on the way!

In anticipation for baring a little more skin, you might be motivated to get moving and whip your body into shape. Soccer star Alex Morgan is prepping for a trip of her own to Canada this June (for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015, NBD), we thought she might be able to relate. As a member of the American team, the Olympic gold medalist is training hard for the tournament. The part she’s looking forward to most? “Standing at the top of the podium at the end!” she says. Get it, girl. In the meantime, Alex took a break to share some health and fitness tips with you.

**Get that cardio in. **

“As a forward, I’m always doing interval runs. I do a 2:1 ratio of running and jogging. So, for every two-minute stride I take a one-minute jog. I try to repeat this at least six times. At the very end, I run a mile at my top speed to see how tired I’ve gotten compared to when I go for my normal mile run. The goal is to minimize the difference in times so I can be less fatigued in the 80th minute of a game. I also do lots of lunges, squats, and core-strengthening ercises in the gym.

Get your mind right.

“Mentally, I’ve learned that failure is sometimes inevitable—especially in soccer. You have a 50/50 chance of winning, but if you’re able to overcome a loss, you’ll be stronger because of it.”

Grab a friend.

“My sister loves when I put her through my national team workout or lifts at the gym. I think it’s always better to have a workout buddy to push you and hold you accountable!”

Believe in yourself.

“Having confidence in any sport you play or workout you do is key. You need to look and feel your best out on the field, on the court, or wherever it may be. That’s why I teamed up with Tampax Pearl Active. I want girls to get off the sidelines and into the game every day of the month. My team also always pulls out the red, white, and blue polish during the World Cup to dress up a little—be on the lookout!”

“I think it’s important to make a schedule and stick to it. Set goals for yourself too. When you reach them, all the work you put in will feel so worth it.”

“A high level of base strength gives athletes the ability to produce more force, which yields a more powerful soccer player that can sprint and change direction at a faster rate,” Barlow says. “Strength training also decreases injury potential so the soccer athlete spends less time on the sideline and more time in the game.”

Complete each of the following five moves for the prescribed reps and sets listed below. Rest for 30-60 seconds between sets, or longer if needed between the weighted exercises.

1. Mini-Band External Rotation
This exercise helps to activate the glutes before a training session or match. “These muscles are extremely important when accelerating, and decelerating on the pitch,” Barlow says. “Strong, active glutes can also protect against injury.”
How to: Place a mini band around your legs, just above the knees and stand in an athletic position, knees slightly bent, hips back (a). Keeping your chest up and feet firmly planted, bring both knees inward and then outward, while engaging the glutes and core (b). If you feel this working the outside of your hips, you’re doing it right!
Sets: 2, Reps: 10

2. Lateral Lunge with Reach
Challenge lower-body stability while stretching the hip flexors and lateral torso. “This exercise will help improve hip mobility, which translates to more power and efficiency when sprinting on the field,” Barlow says.
How to: Start by stepping back with your right foot into a lunge, right hip directly over your right knee, left knee directly over your left foot (a). While contracting your right glute, reach your right hand overhead and laterally crunch your torso to the left, touching your left hand to the ground (b). Return to the starting position and repeat on the opposite side (c).
Sets: 2, Reps: 5 on each side

3. Linear Hurdle Hop
Practice makes perfect, and this move teaches soccer players proper body mechanics when landing and decelerating. “Not only will this improve the athlete’s change of direction abilities, but it will decrease the potential for injury — especially around the knee,” Barlow says.
How to: Set up five small hurdles or cones in front of you, each about 16 to 18 inches apart. Balance on one leg in front of the first hurdle (a). Hop over the hurdle, landing on the same foot, and continue over the remaining hurdles, landing softly to absorb impact though the hips and glutes (b). Be sure not to allow the knee to collapse to the inside upon takeoff or landing.
Sets: 3, Reps: 5 on each leg

4. Dumbbell Push Press
This advanced, multi-joint exercise teaches the lower body and upper body to work in unison in order to produce all-out power. Prepare to strengthen the quadriceps, deltoids (shoulders) and triceps all in one demanding move.
How to: Stand with your feet hip-width apart, holding a pair of dumbbells in front of your chest, elbows bent at your sides, palms facing forward (a). Keeping your heels grounded, chest up and shoulders back, lower into a quarter squat (b). Then, explosively come to standing, driving through your legs to help push the dumbbells overhead, locking your arms out at full extension and bracing your core (c). Lower the weights back to the start position and repeat (d).
Sets: 3, Reps: 5

5. Barbell Romanian Deadlift
Also known as the RDL, “this fundamental exercise builds strength in the hamstrings and glutes — two muscles which are extremely important during acceleration, deceleration and change of direction,” Barlow says.
How to: Stand with feet hip-width apart, knees slightly bent, barbell in front of you on the floor (a). Keeping your back flat, shoulders back and chest up, hinge at the hips and lower down to grasp the barbell with an overhand grip (b). (Note: an overhand grip is standard, though the underhand grip is pictured in the accompanying GIF.) Contracting your hamstrings and glutes, slowly rise to a standing position without bending your legs or rounding your spine, ensuring the barbell stays against your body throughout the entire movement (c). Lock your knees and hips out fully at the very top of the movement, barbell resting against your hips (d).
Sets: 4, Reps: 6

In 2011, Alex Morgan was drafted first overall in the 2011 Women’s Professional Soccer draft by the Western New York Flash. That same year, she was on the U.S. women’s national team in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The youngest player on the team, she scored her first World Cup goal in the semifinal match against France, and the team went on to the finals (only to lose to Japan in a shootout).

In 2012, Morgan landed a spot on the U.S. Olympic women’s soccer team. At the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, held in London, Morgan won her first Olympic medal, a gold, with the American team. The team beat Japan, 2-1, in a revengeful match watched by nearly 80,300—the largest soccer crowd in Olympics history. The victory marked the fourth of five Olympic titles won by the American women’s squad since women’s soccer was first included in the Olympics (1996).

2015 World Cup and 2016 Olympics

Hampered by a knee injury during the spring of 2015, Morgan was not at full strength by the start of the FIFA World Cup in June. However, the star forward returned to the starting lineup by the close of group play, and went on to help the U.S. women claim their first World Cup title since 1999.

Three years later, Morgan and her teammates were favored to win the gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games. In the quarterfinals vs. Sweden, she scored a crucial game-tying goal in the 78th minute. However, the Americans wound up losing the match on penalty kicks, marking their earliest exit from Olympic competition in the team’s history.

2019 World Cup

As co-captain of a team set on defending its crown, Morgan set the tone with a record-tying five goals as the Americans trounced Thailand, 13-0, in their 2019 World Cup opening match. Morgan added a crucial goal in the semifinals vs. England — a moment marked by her “tea-sipping” celebration — and helped keep the pressure on the Netherlands in the final as the U.S. pulled away for a 2-0 win and their fourth overall World Cup title.

Wage Discrimination Lawsuit

In March 2016, Morgan joined several of her teammates to file a complaint of wage discrimination against U.S. Soccer, citing inequities between its compensation for players on the women’s and men’s national teams. The matter escalated in March 2019, when Morgan was among the 28 women’s national team members to file a gender discrimination lawsuit against U.S. Soccer.

‘The Kicks’ Books and Amazon Series

In 2012, Morgan signed a deal with Simon & Schuster to write a series of soccer-themed books for young audiences. The first, The Kicks: Saving the Team (2013), became a New York Times best seller, and The Kicks was adapted for a 10-episode run on Amazon in 2015.

That year Morgan also published a memoir, Breakaway: Beyond the Goal.


Morgan has been married to fellow pro soccer player Servando Carrasco since December 31, 2014. The two first met at UC Berkeley.

In October 2019, Morgan announced she was pregnant with the couple’s first child.

Early Life

On July 2, 1989 in Diamond Bar, California, Alexandra Patricia Morgan was born to Pamela S. and Michael T. Morgan. Since a very early age Morgan showed inclination toward sports. She joined a soccer club, Cypress Elite, at the age of 14. Her team won the under-16 Coast Soccer League (CSL) and she was ranked third among the under-19 players. She received her education from Diamond Bar High School. She obtained a three-time all-league pick and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America named her All-American. She played for both regional and state teams while being in Olympic Development Program. To her that program played a crucial role in honing her skills as a soccer player. As she turned 17, she was inducted into the United States under-20 women’s national soccer team.

In 2007, she went to college UC Berkeley. There she played for the California Golden Bears. During her years with Golden Bears she played against Stanford in NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship. She was nominated for Herman Trophy and became one of the top-three Hermann Trophy finalists. University of California, Berkeley conferred upon her degree in Political Economy one semester earlier.

Club Career

Morgan was the first California Golden Bears player to be drafted into Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS). She then played for Western New York Flash and scored a goal against Atlanta Beat. Scoring 4 goals in 14 matches she helped her club win the WPS Championship title. In 2012, she joined the Seattle Sounders Women due to some financial difficulties. Also being part of a national team her time was divided between club seasonal matches and the 2012 Summer Olympics preparation.

Afterwards she played for Portland Thorns FC in the National Women’s Soccer League. Scoring her first goal for the Thorn during the team’s home-opener she helped her team win 2-1 victory against Seattle Reign FC. The club was ranked third at the end of the season. Portland won the championship, and her team was titled the NWSL Best XI Second team. In October 2015, it was reported that Morgan was traded to Orlando Pride along with Kaylyn Kyle for their number one player.

Awards and Achievements

At 22, Morgan was the youngest player on the U.S. national team to play in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She scored her first goal against France during the semi-final matchup. Morgan believes that the actions made off the field, count as much as the ones on that is why she takes time out of her life to help with cancer organizations and different ways to influence individuals. Morgan does as much as she can off the field to help enthuse others; not only on the field. She has published a book for young players out there to always believe yourself, and work as hard as you can so you can be a better player, achieving your goals. Komen for the Cure Celebrity Supporters & Events). Alex Morgan has helped with several charities but her most important charity she volunteers for is the, “Susan G. Komen breast Cancer Foundation”. Helping to raise money and empowering those with breast cancer that everything is going to be ok. It cannot be denied that Alex Morgan is selfless and she is a motivated to make a difference outside of the U.S. National team.

The hard work, talent, and motivation on and off the field are what make female soccer player, Alex Morgan a hero. The character of Alex Morgan has made her very successful, being an idol to thousands of soccer players around the world. Something that Alex Morgan inspires me and others around is the effort and actions she makes. Morgan determines others want to try their best, and reach for their dreams, such as she has. Alex Morgan is an astonishing role model helping others, like the cancer organization and the book she has made to inspiring young athletes to show, anything’s possible if you put your time and hard work into it. Having Alex Morgan to look up to has made a big impact in my life, making me strive to chase my dreams.

Kicking It with Soccer Star Alex Morgan

The next FIFA Women’s World Cup doesn’t start until June 2015, but Alex Morgan is already prepping to help the U.S. women’s national soccer team nab their first World Cup victory since 1999.

The famous forward and 2012 Olympic gold medalist, who scored a pair of goals at the last World Cup, is hitting the gym and field to do her part to maintain her team’s current world ranking of numero uno. But she’s not all work and no play. Below the 5-foot-8 brunette, whom teammate Abby Wambach calls “the face of women’s soccer,” shares her game-day beauty secrets, favorite body part, and Halloween antics with SHAPE, who caught up with her at the ChapStick “Put Your Lips First” ad shoot.

SHAPE: How are you prepping for the new season?

Alex Morgan (AM): The national team has a training camp coming up in a week. That’s pretty much the start of getting ready for World Cup qualifiers, which is a year from now. We haven’t won the World Cup since 1999, so we’re not really taking many breaks.

SHAPE: Is there anything you’re doing differently to train?

AM: No, I think everyone’s training regimen is set. Right now, I’m just getting back into training twice a day for three to four hours. My regimen includes not only being in the gym and on the soccer field but also going to spin classes, doing yoga, going on runs-just making sure I’m fit and mentally in it. I’ll also occasionally go for runs with my boyfriend, Servando Carrasco. But he kills me. I’ll say, ‘Wait up for me!’ He’s a defensive midfielder in Major League Soccer, which is a completely different position from mine.

SHAPE: How do you mentally push yourself during training?

AM: I try to push myself a little every day. For me, it’s doing 10 more seconds of whatever I’m working on. So if I’m on the treadmill sprinting my butt off or doing a grueling core workout, I think to myself, ‘You can do 10 more seconds, and you’ll be that much mentally stronger.’ After a while, those 10 seconds add up!

SHAPE: What are your beauty secrets on game day?

AM: I’ve been a big Chapstick fan since I was a kid. I love lathering it on. I probably use a bit more Chapstick than necessary. I have some family members who will say, ‘Okay, that’s enough, Alex,’ because I’ll go around my lips like seven or eight times to really lock the moisture. I’m really obsessed with Lip Shield 365 and Hydration Lock right now. With built-in SPF, they’re perfect for the sun even if you’re licking or biting your lips. Other than that, I just wear mascara.

SHAPE: That pink headband you wore throughout the 2011 World Cup became your signature accessory. Do you still wear it?

AM: Oh yeah, every game. I started wearing it six years ago so that my family could spot me on the field. It’s become a staple in my pre-game routine. It’s always pink because of my boyfriend’s mom, who is a breast cancer survivor.

SHAPE: Any other quirky rituals?

AM: Ninety percent of the time when I put on my headphones, I forget to turn on my music. Literally 10 minutes will go by before I realize that there’s no music. Because I travel so often, it’s become a ritual for me to put on my headphones, pull on my hoodie, and just mentally check out.

SHAPE: What’s your favorite body part?

AM: Probably my quads. I’m pretty big into lifting. Not too much, but enough for my sport-and it shows in my quads. They are lean and muscular, but not bulky. So many people come up to me and say, ‘Are you an athlete? I can tell by your quads.’ People can even spot them through my leggings!

SHAPE: Would you ever pose nude for ESPN the Magazine’s Body Issue?

AM: I haven’t done it yet, but I have done Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue, and I loved that. They body-painted on bikinis. That was something that was daring and fun. I was definitely outside of my comfort zone. I was like, ‘Really, nothing? On? Just paint?’ Fortunately, it was a woman body -aint artist. The photos came out better than I had hoped. I would definitely do that again.

SHAPE: You dressed up as one the 2012 Olympic gold-medal-winning gymnasts last Halloween. Was that your idea?

AM: Yeah, my teammate Sydney Leroux and I were trying to think of what we wanted to be for Halloween because we were going to be in L.A. together. She suggested Team USA’s Olympic gymnasts McKayla Maroney and Gabby Douglas. I thought it was an amazing idea. It was the simplest costume. Now we’re in the process of trying to figure out better costumes for this year, which I don’t think is possible because that was the best costume ever. Going as Miley Cyrus has come up, but we didn’t love the idea of one of us going as Robin Thicke.

SHAPE: Did you wear your real gold medals?

AM: Yes, but then we took them off after the photo. We wore fake gold medals outside of the house.

SHAPE: Do you think it’s taboo when people ask to put on your gold medal?

AM: It’s weird because I’ll meet some people who are like, ‘I can’t touch that.’ Then you have some people who are like, ‘Can I put that on?’, and they’re ripping it off of your neck. I have some teammates who don’t let people try theirs on. After I got my gold medal, I thought, ‘This isn’t just me. It belongs to my team, my friends, my family, the fans, everybody who’s impacted my life-this is our gold medal.’ So when someone asks to try it on, I’m like, ‘Sure, why not?’ I might be a little too relaxed about it, but why would I keep it to myself?

Here Are Soccer Star Alex Morgan’s Food Choices For Feeling Full & Healthy

Alex Morgan already has gold medals at home from the 2012 Olympics and the 2015 Women’s World Cup, but that’s not enough. Alex and the rest of the US Women’s Soccer Team have their sights set on gold once again this summer, this time at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Brazil. Naturally, that doesn’t come without hard work and giving up dessert.

The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue model talked to Health about her diet and exercise routines that keep her in top shape. I mean, you have to be fit to get on the top of that podium.


“I eat a pretty big breakfast. I’ll usually have yogurt with granola or some honey and fruit. And, on top of that, two eggs—fried or hard-boiled—with a piece of toast if I want some extra energy.” Alex also shares that she tries to stay away from carbs like bread and pasta.

Pre-Workout Meal

“Before a workout, I need substance, so that’ll be, like, eggplant lasagna or veggies with meat and beans,” she said. “I don’t eat many carbs before training, but around three hours before a game, I’ll have banana pancakes; they help me last six or seven hours. Bananas really help with the state and the recovery of your muscles.”

Post-Workout Meal

“For lifting, it’s important for me to get a protein shake in right away, whereas if I’m running, I’ll do a salad with granola, fruit, and maybe some chicken or beans for protein,” Alex explains.


“I grew up always having dessert after dinner. Always,” Alex spills. “It’s such a hard habit for me to break. It’s fine to have dessert every once in a while, but not seven days a week! So I’ll switch it up: Instead of having a full dessert, I’ll do a piece of chocolate or some herbal tea with a little bit of honey.”

Workout Goals

“I’m always looking to get my heart rate into certain zones,” Alex says. “Because sometimes I feel like I didn’t have a great workout, and then I’ll look at my heart rate and I’m 175 beats or higher, which is a really hard workout!

Typical Exercises

Alex says that she does interval workouts to make sure her body is always working.

“With the team, we’ll do full-body circuit lifts in the gym—so if we’re doing lunges for one or two workouts, the next workout we’ll do squats,” she says.
If I’m training on my own, and one day I’m doing intervals where I’m striding for two minutes and jogging for one minute, the next day I’ll do something like a spin class. Or if I’m running, I’ll do it on a different surface, like the sand.”


Yoga is a twice a week must-do for Alex.

“I love yoga,” she says. “There’s a lot of stretching involved, which helps with my flexibility and injury prevention. Vinyasa is my favorite, as a recovery tool and for me to continue having my legs feel good.”
