“Tight vagina” isn’t just the ultimate compliment you want to hear from the person you’re sleeping with—it’s a physical feat that should be just as high on your #Goals list as, say, finishing a pull-up or deadlifting your body weight. Luckily, like strength training with dumbbells, kegel balls can help you get there.

ICYDK, kegel exercises involve clenching and releasing your pelvic-floor muscles (the ones you squeeze to hold your pee). Those muscles can weaken naturally over time, or after events like childbirth—and can lead to urinary incontinence (or peeing yourself). How to prepare Ben wa balls

Remove your jiggle balls from the packet and clean them thoroughly with hot, (fragrance-free) soapy water or a spritz of sex toy cleaner. It’s super important to clean your toys thoroughly before and after use. This prevents the spread of harmful bacteria, and transmission of STIs if you’re sharing toys.

Do Kegels work?

The answer is yes! If Kegel exercises are performed correctly and practiced regularly, they will make the pelvic floor muscles stronger and tighten your vagina. The other result you may see from doing Kegels is stronger orgasms.

The best type of lubricant is one that is water soluble. It is also the easiest to clean up and will not leave any stains on your clothing. The type of Kegel “trainer” that you choose to start with is a personal choice, but some are better for women that are just starting to use them.

Once you have applied lubricant to your Kegel balls or weights, you will need to either lay down or stand in a comfortable position. Many women that are trying this for the first time, find it easier to insert Kegel balls while they are laying on their back. If you have decided to move up to Kegel weights, a standing position with one foot up on a step or chair may be more comfortable for you.

How to use Kegel balls. While you are laying on your back, insert the first Kegel ball into your vagina. This should be done in a slow and steady process. If you are a “beginner” you should be using Kegel balls that are attached to each other with string. Once this ball is inserted, be sure to tuck the string between the two balls into your vagina as well. Now you can insert the second ball. With this one, be sure that the string that is attached to the other end of this one remains outside of your vagina. Now that they are inserted as far in your vaginal as is comfortable, tighten your pelvic floor muscles and go about your normal daily activities. They can typically stay in place for up to six hours.

How to use Kegel weights. These are available in different weights and it is advisable to start with the lightest weight to begin. These are used in a slightly different manner than the balls. Once washed and lubricated, Kegel weights are inserted into the vagina as you would insert a tampon. (The standing position as described above may be better for inserting these weights) Insert the weight by holding onto the attached string and gently insert. Now that it is inserted, tighten your pelvic floor muscles and you will feel it lifting away from your hand when it is on the string. Stand with this weight in place and try to hold it with your tightened muscles for about 15 minutes. If this is too difficult, you can sit to accomplish this. When you are able to hold this weight for 15 minutes for 2-3 days in a row, then you can progress to the next weight. Do not attempt any exercises until you are able to hold the heaviest weight for the established amount of time.

The Big Picture

A step-by-step set of instructions for inserting Ben Wa balls can be found below if you want to get right to it but I thought it would be best to start out with a quick introduction to their use at a higher level.

Ben Wa balls have been used in various forms by women throughout human history. It’s believed they were originally created by Japanese women before they spread to China (sometimes referred to there as Chinese Bells), India, Vietnam and then into Europe before becoming known worldwide.

They were traditionally made of two hollow brass balls, of which one was empty with the other containing either mercury or a smaller heavy metal ball. These days you can find them made from a variety of materials of course, you can check out our article on the types of ben wa balls here if you’re interested in learning more about that.

The empty ball is inserted first, all the way back to the cervix, followed by the 2nd “loaded” ball until they make contact. When the balls are in place even slight movements of the hips or thighs will cause the contents of the loaded ball to move or roll producing a pleasant vibration.

A common example of their use is to insert the balls as described above then gently rock in a rocking chair or a swing.

You can perform kegels to help hold them in and to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and improve the elasticity of the vagina. Ben Wa balls pre-date our more modern concept of kegel exercises but many believe they were used historically to provide many of the same benefits that kegel exercises aim to achieve.

Inserting Ben Wa Balls

Inserting the balls, or “wearing” them as you might hear it referred to is a relatively straight forward process but it can vary a bit depending on what type of balls you’re using. The basic idea is always the same though, get them in there without hurting yourself. To that end, here are some tips along with step-by-step instructions.

  1. Use lubrication on the balls to help them glide in.
  2. Lay down if you haven’t done this before, then insert the ball (or balls) into the vagina while in a relaxed position.
  3. Hold the balls inside the vagina by tensing your leg muscles together and doing kegel exercises.
  4. Once they’re in you can sit up or move around depending on your ability, women with more experience can insert them without having to lay down and keep them in while moving around the house.

Quick Tips

  • It’s not uncommon to find women on the internet claiming to wear them in public, many of them probably do. If that sounds like something you’d be into then be sure to wear them at home until you’re very comfortable with them and can hold them in for a very long time. Otherwise you might be in for one hell of an “oops” moment in public…
  • Metal or glass balls can be more difficult for beginners to hold onto, you might want to start with plastic or silicone if you haven’t at least somewhat regularly done kegel exercises recently.
  • It will help them slide in easier if you use lubrication, but keep in mind that the easier they go in the easier they’ll come out too. Find a good balance when it comes to how much lube you use.
  • Thoroughly wash the balls with warm soapy water before and after each use. If you’re using balls that are attached via a string or silicone coating of some kind take the time to disassemble them as much as possible and thoroughly wash around the connections. Unattached metal or glass balls are the easiest to clean.
  • Don’t panic if you have trouble getting them back out or if they get stuck. They can’t get lost in there so relax, add some more lube, move around or squat and bear down. They’ll come out.

Setting Expectations

If you have just read Fifty Shades of Grey or heard about Ben Wa balls from a friend and are eager to try them your experience will be much better if you go into the experience with the right expectations. If you don’t know what you’re getting into you might make a wrong choice and end up being disappointed.

If you spend some time reading reviews of Ben Wa balls you’ll see loads of people who went into the experience with flat out unrealistic expectations. Look at reviews for the simplest designs out there, such as stainless steel (unattached) balls. How can there be so much discrepancy between reviewers for something so basic in construction as those products? The answer is clearly that some buyers were expecting something totally different than what they got.

I’m not trying to suggest that all bad reviews for these products are because of this ignorance, some products truly are just bad or cheaply made and packaged. In fact, the sad truth is that most of the stuff you’ll find out there is overpriced crap and repackaged knock-off’s.

That’s the main reason that we only feature a small selection of products on this site. We’re always looking for more great offerings but it’s really rare to find a combination of quality construction and materials at a reasonable price. Heck, it’s even hard to find high quality when you include the products being sold at unreasonable prices.

How to Use Kegel Balls/Inserting and Removing Your Kegel Balls

Contrary to what some people believe, using Kegel balls is really quite simple.

They are inserted into the vagina before you start your Kegel exercises and you will get a full, intense feeling while the Kegels are being performed.

They may or may not bring you to an orgasm but if you are doing this mainly to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, you may want to concentrate on that instead of anything else.

Kegel balls do not hurt and are not uncomfortable, although they are likely to feel different than anything you’ve experienced in the past.

  • First, lie down on your bed or another comfortable place and relax.
  • Rub some water-based lubricant on each of the balls to make them easier to insert.
  • In a slow and steady manner, insert the first Kegel ball while still lying down.
  • Insert the ball as far as you can or as far as you feel comfortable with.
  • If the balls are attached together by a string, you can tuck that string inside the vagina as well.
  • Start to insert the second ball just as you did the first one, remaining relaxed.
  • Once the second ball is inserted, leave the main string hanging outside of your body, much as you would a tampon string.

Once the Kegel balls are inside of you, start by performing a few Kegel exercises so that you can get used to the balls and to make sure that you’re comfortable proceeding. Once you feel comfortable, you can continue with your Kegel exercises or get up and go about your day.

Much the same as inserting your Kegel balls, removing them is simple as well, especially once you get used to it. If you follow the proceeding steps, you should be a pro in no time at removing your Kegel balls.

  • Lie on a bed or another comfortable place and relax.
  • Place some water-based lubricant around the vaginal area to make it easier to remove the balls.
  • Gently tug on the string until the balls are successfully removed.

Of course, if you do not have Kegel balls with a string attached, the process is a little different. With these balls, you will start in a standing position and spread your legs apart slightly.

Next, squeeze your vaginal muscles and push down much the same as you would push out a tampon or even a baby and the balls should just drop out. If they do not come out right away, there is no need to panic.

Simply relax for a few minutes and try again. You can also add more lube, jump up and down, or cough as all of these have been proven effective in releasing your Kegel balls.

Another tip if you’re a beginning Kegel ball user is that you should always start slow and progress from there.

That is, start with around five Kegel exercises at a time and then increase the number you do gradually until you reach a comfortable number.

You can do this either once or twice a day — it’s up to you — but the main point is to make sure that you start out slowly and increase the number of Kegels you do over time.

When doing your Kegels, start by squeezing for five seconds, then release for five or more seconds before continuing. Even when you get to the point where you’re doing a large number of Kegel exercises, you should still perform the exercises using this method.

When you first get started, the feeling will be a little odd or even weird, but keep in mind that Kegel balls are not uncomfortable or painful nor can they get “stuck” or “lost” inside of you. This should make you feel better about using this amazing product.

Post-birthday, I would sometimes wear them around the house while cleaning. When I went to remove them, there were times when I swore my body had swallowed one and that an ER visit was in my future. Warning: Those balls are sneaky little critters!

Yes, I suppose you could say Julie’s evening with Ben Wa went better than my own, since I wussed out after two bars. I didn’t find the experience to be overly sensual, and having them in made it much harder to strut — or, at least, I felt more cautious in my strutting. The last thing I wanted was a little silver ball falling onto the floor and rolling to a stop in the middle of a romantic restaurant. There’s just no explaining that.
