With 23 completed Beachbody programs under my belt, I’m confident that I can provide you with open and honest suggestions to help you make the right move and begin your fitness journey! Fitness is NOT one size fits all. Actually, it’s a very personal decision.

Let’s start by highlighting some questions that will get you thinking…

Here are a few factors that go into choosing the right program to help you reach your goals. Answer these questions:

  • What’s your fitness level? Beginner, advanced, or somewhere in between?
  • Do you have any preferences when it comes to your fitness?
  • How much time do you have each day to work out?
  • Do you have any physical limitations or injuries?

Based on my experience, below I am breaking down program details for the ones I consider to be the best beginner Beachbody workout programs currently available on Beachbody On Demand.

My Top Beginner to Intermediate Workout Recommendations

1) 21 Day Fix

Type: Cardio, Strength
Time: 10-30 Minutes/Day, 3 Weeks
Equipment: Dumbbells or Resistance Band and Exercise Mat
Trainer: Autumn Calabrese

By far, 21 Day Fix is the program I recommend most often for people looking to begin their fitness and nutrition journey!

Here’s why: 21 Day Fix focuses on lifestyle change — forget dieting and forget counting calories friends! With 21 Day Fix, you’ll finally learn what proper portions look like and what foods you should eat to help you lose weight. Autumn Calabrese first introduced her portion control meal planning system with 21 Day Fix and, honestly, it’s been a game changer!

The workouts are only 30 minutes per day and take a well-rounded approach. You’ll be doing a little bit of everything — from cardio to strength training and even yoga. And if you’ve never lifted weights before, the light weight lifting 21 Day Fix incorporates makes this program a great introduction! You can follow along with the modifier (lower-impact, lower-intensity moves) as you start out and then work yourself up to the regular moves.

Like to dance? If the answer is YES, then you have TWO options: YOUv2 & Country Heat.

2) YOUv2

Type: Dance, Cardio
Time: 30 Minutes/Day, 4 Weeks
Equipment: None
Trainer: Leandro Carvalho

You may be wondering what YOUv2 stands for. “You Version 2.” And this beginner program is designed to help you become your best self! Brazil Butt Lift creator, Leandro, will lead you through cardio-dance routines set to hits we all know and love from the ’80s and ’90s. This program is great for people who are looking increase their activity level in a fun way and are beginners to fitness. (You can even do this one with younger kids to get them active as well!) You will love the simple nutrition plan and Leandro’s energy!

3) Country Heat

Type: Dance, Cardio
Time: 30 Minutes/Day, 30 Days
Equipment: None
Trainer: Autumn Calabrese

I will never forget the day I heard that our next fitness program would be a country dance program. I immediately thought “no thank you, that’s not for me!” Then I tried a live workout with Autumn Calabrese, and WOW — I had a blast and I was sweating bullets! So, I am not a Country music fan yet, I love me some Country Heat!

This program is perfect for beginners and it’s a great introduction to cardio exercise. Autumn incorporates simple, high energy, low-impact moves which will get your heart rate up and your booty swaying to popular country songs. YEEHAW! Autumn walks you through two moves at a time so you don’t need to be a professional dancer to keep up with her and the cast. There aren’t complicated full routines to memorize like in Cize (Shaun T’s most recent dance program). But what I love most about Country Heat is that it’s a FUN way to workout!

4) Mes de Mas

Type: Cardio
Time: 30 Minutes/Day, 28 Days

There are a handful of reasons why this program makes my list. The workouts are short, just 25 to 30 mins per day. You don’t need any equipment to get it done — just a yoga mat. There is a full modifier that you can follow. The focus is total body strength and endurance gains. The workouts get progressively more challenging week to week. AND, I’m in the cast!

Creating a workout program can seem like a foreign language, especially if getting in shape is new to you. Luckily for you, fitness programs like beachbody have developed a system to make getting in shape simpler.

But which one is good for beginners?

Finding the best beachbody workouts for beginners is going to be key to how you progress with your fitness. If you start off with something too advanced, you could easily find yourself getting discouraged and possibly giving up.

That is why I will be providing you with some of the best workouts beachbody has to offer for those new to working out. Most of the workouts I have listed are a few weeks long in program length, allowing you to build up your body up for more intense workout programs.

A Little Obsessed

Intensity Level

If you’ve heard of the beachbody 80 day obsession workout, then you know it’s a workout designed to get you in some serious shape. For those that feel they aren’t up for the challenge yet, the “a little obsessed” workout program was designed to help you get ready.

What I like most about this workout is the way they have it setup. There are 5 different workouts that last only 30 minutes each day. You will be working on a variety of different body parts that focus on the lower body, upper body, and the core.

These workouts are very simple in design, and was created to help build your body up before trying the main workout, which is the 80 day obsession. This will give you an opportunity to find out if the workout is for you.

It’s very quick and easy to follow, which is something many beginners need when starting out. There are some things you will need before getting started equipment wise.

So if you’re someone that prefers to do bodyweight training vs weight training, then at least this is good to know before getting started.

Some of the items include:

  • Dumbbell weights (light, medium, or heavy depending on fitness level)
  • Resistance loops
  • Strength slides
  • Workout mat
  • Tracker sheet that comes with program
  • Portion control containers (check beachbody website)

I know that getting some of these things may be a bit much if you’re not yet sure if you want try the program out. But if you’re confident you will, but just need a program to help build you up to it, this would be a great option.

Once you’ve gone through the program and feel it is something you can handle, all you have to do is jump right into the 80 day obsession workout. And the best part is that you know exactly what to expect with it.

I think one of the biggest struggle for those looking to improve their health is trying to manage both the diet and fitness aspect of it. Not knowing how often you should exercise to lose weight, or what types of foods to eat.

What makes this workout program so unique and helpful to beginners is the structure they provide for your health and fitness routine. By providing you with step by step instructions on how and when you should eat and exercise.

You are given a workout calendar and food containers to help you get organized which takes out all the guesswork. By using a simple formula, a meal plan is created for you based on your caloric need to help you lose your targeted weight.

The program is for 21 days and each workout is no more than 30 minutes long. I think this is great for beginners because it gives you 3 weeks to get your body built up for something more advanced.

Not only are you given a workout to help ease you into everything, but they also help you manage your nutrition as you learn. The workout does require a set of dumbbells, resistance bands, and a mat to perform the workout on…Read Review

Intensity Level

If you’re looking for a workout that is low impact and doesn’t use any weights, then this workout may work for you. Combining both Pilates and Yoga, you can expect to build lean muscles with all the cool yoga exercises to help build a stronger core.

Although this is considered a more intense type of yoga, as a beginner, you should still expect to be able to manage the workouts. This program provides you with everything you need to get started with your fitness routine.

You’re provided with a food tracker to help you keep track of your daily servings. You’re also given a workout calendar so you have an idea of the type of workouts you will be performing each day.

The length of the program is for 60 days and each workout is 45 minutes long. This is a little bit longer than most beginner workouts I would usually recommend. But if you’re a beginner looking to slowly ease yourself into working out, this should work well for you.

I think what most users will like about this program is that it uses just the body alone as a form of resistance. No need to purchase any other piece of equipment like dumbbells. This is especially help if you are someone that struggles with joint pain as this workout is considered low impact.

Shift Shop

Intensity Level

If you’re someone that has always wanted to train like an athlete, or was a former athlete looking to get back into it, you may want to take a look at this workout program. This program is designed to help you train like the athletes do, but on a smaller scale.

Using color coded agility markers, this program was created to help you burn as much fat as possible, as quickly as possible. Now I know this program sounds like it would be for someone who is advanced, but I can assure you that a beginner can handle what this program has to offer.

When starting the program, the formation of the markers are set up so that it’s not too difficult to perform each exercise. But if you do find yourself improving, you can easily modify the difficulty of the exercises by spreading out the distance of the markers.

You can use dumbbell weights for this workout, and can increase the weight of it as you see fit. The length of the program is 21 days and each workout should last 45 minutes long. Although there are weights, this workout is primarily cardio based.

What is also helpful with this program is that there is a modifier that allows you to decrease the intensity of the workout if you find yourself struggling to manage it. This allows for any beginner to adjust their workout based on their fitness level…Read Review

One of the most important things when it comes to living a healthier lifestyle is having a system that guides you in that process. Too many times people are trying things without really knowing if it’s what their body really needs to get the best results.

I can remember when I was getting ready to have surgery to repair my ACL, one of the best things I did was prehab my knee. Basically building it up so that when it came to the rehab, it wouldn’t take me long to get back to full strength. So I was able to recovery pretty quickly from the surgery.

So when it comes to making sure you have a safe and healthy pregnancy, you want to make sure you do the work before and after it. And although I will never know what it feels like to be pregnant, I understand the importance of preparing the body for what’s to come.

I love watching the Beachbody infomercials while I’m on the treadmill. Is that really weird?

Yes? No…admit it.

Well after the great article from Katie on maintaining muscle mass while marathon training, I decided it was time to get focused again on building some muscle. And since I have seen so many of these infomercials, I began to wonder:

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?!! How does one pick a beachbody program…besides just looking at Shaun T’s abs, that is kind of a selling point, right?

Luckily I know some very fit ladies who have tested out each of these programs and were willing to break it down for us. This is not a sponsored post, just something I wanted to share.Bonus: Don’t feel like investing in tons of programs, maybe all you really need is to check out Beachbody on Demand.

You can stream all 700 workouts for the next 12 months for just $99. That’s way cheaper than buying individual programs.

First up a quick chart to give you an easy comparison of the products and then a more detailed description. Be sure to click on the links to their blogs where you will find more details on results and workouts that they have done with the program.

Instructors or long time Beachbody coaches were asked to provide an overview of each program and a rating of intensity 1-10 with 10 being the hardest. Most agreed that you can vary the intensity by how hard you work.

Having done classes from Insanity, PiYo, T25 and P90X I would say that is generally true, but Insanity is still no frigging joke. That’s how I displaced my rib!! Perfect for those of you who like a killer workout.

80 Day Obsession

This is the newest program to come out, so I’ve just added it to this comparison, but haven’t updated the charts yet.

Based on the name you might have guessed this is an 80 intense program of 6 workouts per week and maybe most importantly, a specific nutrition plan to follow. It involves eating every 2-3 hours that is going to ensure you get focused on meal planning.

There are six workouts in each phase: Leg Day, Butt Day, Total Body Core, Cardio Core, Cardio Flow and TRIPLE A (arms, abs and ass), with continually changing weights, reps and compound movements.

Sorey Fitness provides a ton of information on meals and all the other FAQs you might have about this program.

Favorite move: Autumn Calabrese the creator of the program actually shares one of her favorite moves on Instagram, which is the hip hinge! It’s the correct way to do what we often call a deadlift to really engage the glutes.

Results: It seems on of the biggest result is not just from the workouts, but from people learning how to clean up their nutrition. From Sorey Fitness

P90X3 is a complete all over workout mixing cardio, strength, yoga and pilates with a strong core focus. For me as a runner it complimented my marathon training perfectly and was just what I needed as I came back from a long term injury.

The entire program plan can be completed in 3 months and is included with the set. Each workout includes modifications and strength workouts include methods for bands and dumbbells.

6 Resistance/Strength Workouts
3 Cardio
4 Core, Flexibility & Balance

Favorite move: I loved the majority of the workouts but I think my favorite was Eccentric Lower and Ab Ripper. These spoke to me so much as an injured runner with a weak core and lazy glutes.

Results: Overall P90X3 transformed me by strengthening my core, engaging my glutes and increasing my strength. I am no longer in a constant cycle of repeat injury due to bad running form.
From Marathon Mom

This fitness program is unique that it is an all inclusive workout that you do for only 25 minutes a day, 5 times a week! Shaun T experimented to design a program that delivers the same kind of results you’d expect from an hour-long program, in under 30 minutes. He’s pulled out the rest to give you everything you need, nothing you don’t.

Favorite move: My favorite workout DVD is Speed 2.0! Holy moly what a great workout! I get a better speed session in during these 25 minutes than I do doing running the track! No joke!

Results: Although I didn’t document my results with photos, I did find that my speed for RUNNING increased and my core strength increased. I was stronger, fitter, and healthier.

Favorite move: seen on Dumbells and Diapers it’s a knee twist with a push up

Results: In progress. I only have 3 & 8 lb dumbbells and a resistance band but you can see the definition developing in my chest, back, and arm muscles.

PiYo delivers the muscle-sculpting, core-focused benefits of Pilates along with the flexibility and power of yoga. PiYo’s low-impact compound exercises engage multiple muscle groups at the same time – while keeping your body in constant motion.

It involves a lot of core training, strength moves and yoga/pilates, different sections of the workout are more/less intense for different people.

Favorite move: I love them all! But on the whole, I really love the Flow sections of PiYo — they’re the most traditional yoga parts of class, and I’m a yoga addict. The right angle/extended side angle with a bind is my personal favorite BUT it’s also something only advanced and experienced students should try.

Results: AMAZING. When I started teaching PiYo Strength, everything improved: my mood, my strength, my running (I PR’d at all my distances after starting PiYo).

Insanity is a workout there you are using Max Interval Training and your own body weight to perform Agility, Plyometric, Endurance, Cardio, and Strength movements.

Compared to the traditional HIIT training workouts of the past, you flip the method and work within your Max realm of fitness for most of the workout with shorter bursts of recovery. Therefore, you’re being more efficient with your workouts, using your own body, and increasing fat metabolism as a result.

Workouts range from Tabata drills to longer intervals, strength to cardio exercises, but all using body weight

Favorite move: Iron Legs! (Lunge, Lunge, Squat, Jump up into a scissor jump and back down)

Results? I lost 15 lbs with the original Insanity and so far almost down 5 lbs and 4-5 inches with Max:30

21 Day Fix is an all-inclusive wellness program that incorporates at home workouts (all 30 minutes each) with portion control containers, meal and recipe ideas to foster a healthy diet over the long term.

The workouts
Each 21 Day Fix workout is different – upper body, lower body, cardio, yoga, Pilates, abs. Modifications are shown throughout each workout, and I recommend this program to participants of all fitness levels because of this.

The eating plan
The 21 Day Fix uses portion control containers that participants use each day to ensure they are eating enough nutrients. The plan is roughly 40% carbohydrates, 30% protein and 30% fat. A simple equation helps participants determine the exact number of containers they need – how many vegetables, fruits, lean meats, essential fats, etc. – to ensure their success. There is no calorie counting – in other words, we can enjoy our food!

Intensity of workout 1-10: 7-8, depending on your fitness level. Many of the workouts use weights or resistance bands, so beginners can feel comfortable choosing lighter weights and increase the amount as they become stronger and more acclimated to the program. Intensity level really can be determined by the participant.

Favorite move: I love the entire Plyo Fix workout. 30 minutes of intense plyo moves such as jump squats, burpees, tuck jumps, high knees. All done in 30-second increments with a 30-second break between each move.

Results: I lost 7 pounds and 6 inches the first time I did it. My husband lost 12 pounds and 7 inches.

Have #Beachbody infomercials caught your attention? Great breakdown on @runtothefinish of each program

Belatedly I realized that all the Chalene programs were missing from this overview! So if you have experience with any of those I’d love to hear about it. And yes I have actually picked one of them to test out, so look for that!

And for those who are wondering can you possibly do one of these programs and run? The answer is yes…but with a lot of nuances to that answer, so we’ll discuss it another day!

Have you ever tried following one of these?

What does Fitness Activist think of P90X?

P90X is structured for muscle confusion. Each day is different, targeting different sets of muscles and providing either a cardio or weight-lifting workout. In addition, each WEEK is different. It’s not like you just keep rotating the same DVDs in a continuous loop. Being someone who tends to get bored with monotony, I was happy to learn of the variety.

Day One: Chest and Back + Ab Ripper X

This workout revolves around the pull up and the push up. MANY of them, at that. Which was just swell because I cannot even do ONE. Luckily for me, we’re told to use a chair for assistance until we’re able to do them on our own.

It was about 10 minutes into this workout that I realized what I had gotten myself into. And I still had 50 minutes to go. How I survived I’m still not sure. Ever wonder if your armpits can quiver? They can.

Oh, and after I made it though the hour long workout? I got to do 20 minutes of some of the most intense ab exercises I’ve ever come across. Like I said, HARDCORE.

Day 2: Plyometrics

This was a cardio DVD. And after putting my shoulders through the third circle of hell, I was thankful for a break. HA! In P90X there are no breaks. None. Other than one day of rest a week, you should just know that you are going to work hard every.single.day. This workout was a great example of that.

After the Mister and I got 30 minutes through we both looked at each other and yelled – we STILL have 30 minutes of this sh*t to go! Reason #9875 recommend doing his program with a partner. You’ll keep each other motivated threaten the other person’s livelihood if they even CONSIDER leaving you alone.

Day 3: Shoulders and Arms + Ab Ripper X

When the alarm went off on Wednesday morning, my soul died a little bit.

But after powering through and putting my arms through one of the hardest workouts they’ve ever seen, I’ve felt the strongest I’ve ever felt. I’m aware that my muscles weren’t ALREADY getting stronger, people (although with this workout, who can say for sure!), I’m talkin’ inner strength. It’s something I wasn’t expecting with P90X. I wasn’t expecting to feel so accomplished, so proud. It was a happy surprise. It almost made the pain worth it.

You’ll notice that after the hour of weight training, I had to continue with the Ab Ripper. If hell is real, it’s the Ab Ripper on a continuous loop.

Day 4: Yoga

This workout was an hour and 30 minutes! Now I know a few yogis have said that P90X bothers them because it isn’t as authentic as “real” Yoga. I happened to love it. The poses were traditional yoga poses and it was one of the few Yoga workouts I’ve done where I actually feel like I’m working out.

Also – I’m not nearly as flexible as I thought I was.

While this workout FELT the easiest while doing it, my body felt like it had been trampled by the end of the day.

Day 5: Legs and Back + Ab Ripper

DO NOT – I repeat – DO NOT take a spinning class the night before this workout. In all fairness, I did not KNOW that day 5 was a leg workout. Taking that spinning class was the stupid. VERY stupid. At one point during this workout I was evaluating all the knives in my kitchen – trying to determine which one would do the best job of CUTTING MY LEGS OFF. I wish I was kidding.

And you may have noticed I got to do that lovely Ab Ripper again! I am the luckiest.

Day 6: Kenpo

I loved this workout. LOVED. Yes, it was hard, but it made me feel like a badass, and there are few things better than that.

As some of you may know, I have a black belt in karate! I earned it in high school after practicing for several years. I’ve been out of practice for awhile, but I’d like to think my technique came right back in this workout!

This workout was (dare I say?) fun and went by very quickly.

Day 7: REST

There is a God.

Hope this walk through of P90X has helped you.
