What Makes Alkaline Water Different?
Water is a combination of hydrogen and oxygen. That’s why you call it H2O. Water’s pH level determines how acidic it is and ranges from 0 to 14. A pH of 7 is considered neutral. That “seven” number is considered neutral or balanced between acidic and alkaline. If water is below 7 on the pH scale, it’s “acidic.” If it’s higher than 7, it’s “alkaline.”
EPA guidelines state that the pH of tap water should be between 6.5 and 8.5. Still, tap water in the U.S. tends to fall below that — in the 4.3 to 5.3 range — depending on where you live.
Bottled water falls under different standards depending on whether it claims to be alkaline. Bottled alkaline water has a pH level above 7. In some cases, manufacturers use a special device to change the chemical makeup of the water. Other times, they add nutrients to the water to change its pH.
For comparison, orange juice has a pH of 3.3 and black coffee is about a 5. Pure water has a neutral pH of 7. But tap water in the U.S. tends to fall below that — in the 4.3 to 5.3 range — depending on where you live.

Water is H2O, two hydrogen atoms for each oxygen atom. Neutral water has an equal number of OH- ions (hydroxyl ions) and H+ ions (hydrogen ions), maintaining the 2 to 1 ratio of hydrogen and oxygen atoms.
Alkaline water is water with more OH- ions than H+ ions. This water has more oxygen atoms compared to the 2 to 1 ratio of hydrogen to the oxygen atom of regular water.

Oxygen water? You can’t breathe through your stomach
Unless you have gills, this won’t make you a stronger, faster athlete.
My exercise of choice is running. Despite the heat I’ve been having a great summer, training for the Chicago marathon. I’ve followed the training schedule fanatically since June. But it all came crashing down in one run last week when I moved from the ranks of “marathoner in training” to “injured runner”.
With the sudden onset of very sharp, radiating back pain, I was struggling to walk. My marathon plans seemed to evaporate. And in that moment of weakness, I became prey. Prey to pseudoscience, and prey to anyone offering a quick fix.
I usually know what it takes to resolve back pain. Mainly it’s time. It will resolve. Exercise seems to help me, and the memory of back pain keeps me active almost every day. But despite our best efforts, it can reappear. I’m a terrible patient. I want to do something, anything, that will get me back to normal as quickly as possible.
With the desire to do something other than wait, I found a physiotherapist who could see me the next day. And in doing so, I may have found a setting with more pseudoscience than your local drug store. It’s the sports therapy clinic. In the waiting room there was a display of Kinesio Tape for sale. Brochures invited me to consider acupuncture for my injuries. And I could have booked time with a chiropractor if wanted. I didn’t want any of that. I don’t know what the problem with my back is, but I know it’s not a subluxation, or a problem with Qi. The physiotherapist I met seemed evidence-based, and thankfully didn’t suggest acupuncture. I’ve been doing some of the gentle exercises she recommended, and mobilizing daily. And while I’m not limping anymore, the pain isn’t gone yet, and I’m trying not to get to anxious as I approach two full weeks without running. (If there’s an activity that’s more boring than water running, I haven’t found it.)
Leaving the clinic after my second visit, in slightly less pain, I noted that this athletic therapy clinic also sold bottled water. But it wasn’t just any bottled water. This water was specifically for athletes. The label caught my attention and I snapped a picture (above). I had never heard of water with extra oxygen before, with the exception of when I blogged about hydrogen peroxide. Based on the marketing for this particular product, GP8, some athletes endorse oxygenated water, claiming that they can perform better. There are dozens of water products that claim to deliver more oxygen with each swallow, and they’re sold widely.
I can see why this product would be tantalizing to anyone that wants an athletic edge or faster recovery. When you’re injured, there can be a strong feeling of “what’s the harm” that can overwhelm any cautious consideration of the science and the evidence. It’s the same reason that dietary supplement vendors are sponsoring Olympic athletes, and why many athletes endorse these products despite the lack of evidence that they provide any meaningful benefit. Athletes want any edge they can get, even if it’s pseudoscience. Anything that can help performance (or perhaps recovery from injury) can seem very attractive. What better setting could there be to market these products than a clinic treating injured athletes?
Despite the hype, the claims and the athletic endorsements, there’s no persuasive evidence that oxygenated waters offer any meaningful health or athletic benefits beyond the basic hydration you can get from a tap. Like many pseudoscientific products, oxygenated water in an unsinkable rubber duck.
Who drinks oxygen, anyway?
Why would we drink oxygen at all? We’ve all got unlimited access to air, which at about 21% oxygen keeps our bloodstream almost completely saturated with oxygen. I can only postulate the reasoning behind the development of these products:
- We need oxygen to live
- When we exercise, we sometimes get short of breath
- If some oxygen is good, then more must be better
- “Hey guys, I’ve got an idea. What if we cram more oxygen in drinking water? Then we can bypass the lungs and put more oxygen in the bloodstream.”
- Profit (and perhaps get a supportive anecdote)
It’s true that we need oxygen to live, and when we breathe heavily during exercise, it’s to take in more oxygen and eliminate carbon dioxide (CO2). Almost of the oxygen the blood carries is bound to hemoglobin. There’s a small amount of oxygen that’s dissolved in the plasma. When we exercise, the amount of oxygen in the blood decreases only slightly, from nearly 100% saturation to around 90%. Under most circumstances, the air we breathe is providing all the oxygen we need – exceptions being specific medical conditions, or breathing at very high altitudes, where air pressure is lower and the oxygen saturation in the blood is lower, too.
While there’s an oxygen atom in every water molecule, this isn’t “free” oxygen that is available for respiration. There’s a small amount of oxygen (as O2) that’s dissolved in water and available to aquatic life. Putting water under pressure, you can force more oxygen to dissolve into it. But release the pressure, and you’ll see it emerge – it’s the same principle as carbonated water, where CO2 is released when a no longer under pressure.
The manufacturer of the bottled water I spotted in the clinic claims to have solved this issue:
GP8’s Enhanced Solubility Water contains up to 400% as much dissolved oxygen as untreated water. This oxygen occurs in the form of ‘guest’ molecules of O2 which occupy and stabilize the spaces between molecules of H2O. The unique purification process used to create GP8 results in larger spaces between H2O molecules, which in turn allow for two or more molecules of O2 occupying and stabilizing them. The result is increased oxygen content. And unlike ‘oxygenated waters’ which quickly release their dissolved gas after opening, the oxygen in GP8 is not under pressure and remains in the water for several hours, even with agitation. GP8 is believed to improve oxygen delivery through the circulatory system by promoting more efficient oxygen transfer through the plasma. Not only does GP8 maximize oxygen intake, but it is also one of the few alkaline pH waters available – a property which is thought to help counter the effects of lactic acid. Committed to serious athletes, GP8 Oxygen Water is 100% additive-free and contains no chemical by-products resulting from the purification process.
There’s about 5mg/L of dissolved oxygen in typical drinking water, but that can vary based on the source, the temperature and other factors. The proprietary method claimed by GP8 states that it can increase the effective oxygen levels without putting the water under pressure. While there’s an elaborate information sheet posted online, I can’t find any published evidence to show that (1) this phenomena actually exists and that (2) there’s actually more oxygen absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract.
Our need to use oxygen at elevation tells you what happens if we happened to absorb oxygen into our bloodstream. Without putting the body under higher atmospheric pressure, the blood can’t simply dissolve more oxygen in it when it’s already saturated.
The manufacturer of GP8 has a list of several studies that they assert support their claim of effectiveness. I can’t find any that have been published and peer reviewed. And there’s insufficient information presented to even evaluate the data. Here’s one example:
Study ESW 002: Single-Blind, Randomized, Tap Water Controlled, Sub-Maximal Exercise Test at a Predetermined Heart Rate to Ascertain the Effect of Enhanced Solubility Water (ESW) on Cycling Speed Over a Five-Mile Simulated Distance
Study site: NorCal Bicycle Testing Facility, Santa Rosa, CA
The results showed that after consuming ESW, the cyclists, while maintaining their pulse rates constant, were statistically significantly faster for miles 2-5 and for the full five mile course (P < 0.05), than after ingesting . Since Studies ESW 001 and ESW 002 demonstrated markedly positive physiologic effects of ESW, a larger more definitive study was performed.
In order for the claims of oxygenated waters to be considered credible, there needs to be rigorously controlled trials (double-blind) with an appropriate number of test subjects. The entire methodology needs to be well documented, and it needs to be published in peer-reviewed literature. For more credibility, it needs to be duplicated. The fact that there’s no credible, published, peer-reviewed literature showing that oxygenated water delivers any athletic benefits is telling. Probably most importantly, even if there is more oxygen in oxygenated water, and it actually is absorbed, it won’t matter. The amount of oxygen in just one breath is vastly higher than the theoretical oxygen supplied by any oxygenated water.
Conclusion: Snake oil, without the snake or the oil
Like homeopathy, which promises all the benefits of medicine without the actual medicine, or sports supplements that promise “drug free” enhancement of athleticism, oxygenated water promises a sports advantage with zero downside. If I didn’t examine the evidence, I could probably be convinced that oxygenated water might help my back pain recover. Given it is water, what’s the harm? But it is when we are most desperate that we are at our most vulnerable. It’s hard to be objective, to ask for the evidence, and to critically appraise it. But that’s when it’s probably most important. As I am constantly reassuring myself these days, when we see the promise of a magical quick fix, we need to be extra skeptical.

Sometimes your life takes a turn from a dream into a nightmare in a few seconds. Your heart seems to jump out of your chest when you hear words from other people saying: “time will solve it” or “every cloud has a silver lining” or “one day will you understand what life wanted to tell you”. When I got sick I was diagnosed with final stage cancer. Hardly any hope – that was the answer after all the examinations. But when you fight for yourself there are only two options. I chose the more difficult one but I have been like that all my life.
After a year and a half of standard treatment combined with everything I could find, I was healthy. After another year when I felt a little stronger I opened the first Oxyslovakia centre with a set of procedures, which I had tried in the course of my treatment and which had also worked with a person as sick as I was. Breathing 95% oxygen is the main treatment and it is also low in cost. The air we breathe contains only 21% oxygen.
People around me started to tell other people about everything that I had done to take care of my health during treatment and also after the treatment. These people then started to visit Oxywater Slovakia to inhale oxygen as a preventative treatment. After another year I realised what “life wanted to tell me” really meant and this was “my way”. I often thought how I could bring some of the benefits to my clients who are not able to travel 1 hour a day to visit our centre for treatment. You can be sure that we have harmessed the energy from this much concentrated oxygen with its strong anticeptic properties into an andanced yet modern package using our new available technologies.
From data and academic case studies of Dr. Oto Warburg and Prof. Dr. A. Pakdaman M.D. about the influence of OOT (oral oxygen therapy) supported with personal experience, the journey to develop a new category has been started, to develop oxygenated water, Oxywater.
I got in touch with similarly passionate people from the Czech Republic and after nearly three and a half years of trying, based on trial-and-error we have managed to achieve the our original goal – to create, maintain and sustain as much as 90 mg of oxygen per litre our water and we also have patented it. The owner of the patent is the Czech company called Oxylife, which produces the Slovakian brand Oxywater. Tap water contains approximately 8 – 9 mg/l of oxygen. There is so-called oxygenated water or water which is enriched with oxygen that contain between 9 and 40 mg/l. The challenge to get up to 90 mg/l of oxygen was so natural that whatever we achieved over time (50 or 60 mg/l – the most in the market) we were never satisfied.
The original intention was to bottle our oxygenated water in glass bottles, after all we cannot destroy our invention by using plastic bottles or cans. Plastic was ruled out unequivocally and we were testing glass bottles for a long time. There is no bottle top or technology which could maintain the oxygen level that we were aiming at, in a glass bottle. I understood another cliché “every cloud has a silver lining” when I visited the biggest can factory in the world. Apart from the fact that cans are the No.1 recyclable material in the world and that 60 days after use they are back in circulation again. I was fascinated by the “off taste” technology. This technology consists in covering the inside of a recyclable aluminium can with a harmless food grade varnish and firing the can at a temperature of 240°C.
The most important thing for me is to make sure that the technology is perfect and to see the final inspections with my own eyes to ensure that there is no leakage of aluminium or varnish into Oxywater. There is 90 mg/l of oxygen in fresh water with a low mineral content, which is safe. You can drink it in your car, in a restaurant, together with your coffee or whilst doing sports.
Finaly the last cliché that “time will solve it” was also fulfilled. After a long journey the time came to present Oxywater with 90 mg of oxygen per litre – energy, health and prevention in the most natural way.

When you sit down at a restaurant and the waiter asks “still, sparkling, or tap?” you realize you already have a lot of water options and you haven’t even opened up your menu.
But those three choices are just the tip of the iceberg that is the booming “specialty water” industry.

“The key element is water, which most people are still under-consuming’ despite all the varieties out there,” says Kristine Clark, Ph.D., R.D.N., an associate research professor in the College of Health and Human Development at Pennsylvania State University.

Brands claim water with extra hydrogen gas dissolved in it can neutralize cell-damaging free radicals, increase energy production, and ease inflammation. “But the science doesn’t validate the added cost,” says Melissa Majumdar, R.D., a bariatric dietitian for the Brigham and Women’s Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Plus, your body doesn’t actually need more hydrogen, says Abbie E. Smith-Ryan, Ph.D., an associate professor and the director of the Applied Physiology Laboratory in the department of exercise and sport science at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. “Part of why we fatigue during exercise is because of hydrogen build-up, which causes your muscles to stop contracting,” she says.
Any benefits you feel from hydrogen water are likely due to the fact that you’re simply hydrating more.

The logic behind marketing water with extra O2 as a way to help your body process toxins or recover faster makes sense: “The more oxygen we have, the better we can breathe, and the greater the nutrient delivery in the blood,” explains Clark. “Hypothetically, with more oxygen in the blood, we could perform to a greater standard.” (Related: Is Canned Oxygen the Key to Post-Workout Recovery?)
But drinking oxygen doesn’t get those extra molecules into your bloodstream, where they do their work. And “there’s no research to support hydrogen water’s ‘benefits,'” says Majumdar. You’d be better off drinking beet or tart cherry juice, which are proven to increase blood flow and circulation.

Metals and impurities have been removed from alkaline water via microfiltration, reverse osmosis, and ultraviolet exposure processes, to make it less acidic. Proponents say it can regulate your body’s pH levels, which is important for making your enzymes and muscles work better, says Smith-Ryan. But your body does that naturally. “Having some water is not going to modify that pH,” she says. “Your body is too strong of a regulator.” (Related: What’s Up with Crystal-Infused Water?)
While one study did show that high pH water reduced blood viscosity (or made blood flow more efficiently) by 6.3 percent compared to 3.36 percent with standard purified drinking water, Clark calls that number statistically insignificant—meaning, you’re not going to notice a difference.

Sodium, potassium, and chloride are all ionized minerals that conduct electrical currents in the body. You lose them when you sweat, which is why you see electrolyte-enhanced drinks at aid stations during races. “Athletes who are exercising for over an hour should be consuming extra electrolytes,” says Majumdar. “They’re going to help you retain fluid and also increase thirst, so you keep drinking.”
But the average person doesn’t need to be chugging electrolytes all day—when you over-consume them, “you just sweat them out or excrete them,” says Smith-Ryan. And while most enhanced waters are calorie-free, electrolyte-rich sports drinks often have other additives, like flavoring and carbohydrates. (Keep that in mind if you’re cutting out added sugars.)
