Research does support the effectiveness of diets rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein in reducing symptoms of chronic disease (Sofi et al., 2008). Some people report that they experience weight loss, boosted energy, and increased focus during a detox diet plan. These effects are likely due to cutting out processed, unhealthy foods, rather than any specific detoxifying effects (Zeratsky, 2015). Furthermore, a cleanse may have negative effects on health. Many cleanse plans restrict intake of protein, leading to significant fatigue. Furthermore, longer term detoxing can lead to vitamin or mineral deficiencies.

In addition to the acute health concerns associated with detox diets, these diet plans simply do not form a long-term solution to health problems. 4. The 10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse. Pictures of green smoothies have probably been all over your Facebook feed for months as this popular cleanse has spread through social media. Participants say they drop up to 15 pounds by drinking only smoothies made of blended fruits and veggies for 10 days, as outlined by J.J. Smith’s popular book. While the diet is high in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, it lacks other important nutrients, like protein. 5. A Juice Cleanse. Juicing has long been used as a way to get lots of vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables without having to, well, eat all those fruits and vegetables. So juice cleanses, of which there are many different types, take advantage of this vitamin mega-dose by having people replace all (or part) of their solid food with specially formulated juices. While the cleanses can be a great way to get your daily produce in, experts warn that many juices are high in sugar and lack the fiber that whole fruit has. 6. Detox Cleanse. Detoxing-or removing unhealthy toxins from the body-is one of the main reasons people give for wanting to do a cleanse. Toxic overload can make you feel sluggish, lead to acne, and can cause allergic reactions-among a host of other ills. But most experts warn against pill- or drink-based detox cleanses. The body’s own mechanisms for cleansing using the liver, kidneys, and colon are sufficient to rid your body of most toxins, they say. Slendera is one brand name of a garcinia cambogia supplement that is often combined with a larger cleansing plan involving “natural” laxatives and diuretics. Most experts advise steering clear of laxatives and diuretics, natural or otherwise, unless your doctor advises you to take them for a specific reason. Long-term use can be very harmful to your body. However, garcinia cambogia extracts may offer a small boost for dieters.

8. Dherbs Full Body Cleanse. Dherbs is a company that makes a line of proprietary supplements that claim to cure a range of illnesses and health problems. The Full Body Cleanse is a system of pills or liquid supplements you take on a daily basis for 20 days in addition to following a suggested raw-food diet. Proponents say they have lost nearly a pound a day and feel more energized. However, because of the limited information available on the company’s site, not much is known about what exactly is in the supplements-or how they work. Still interested? You should note they’re pretty pricey and the company has a no-refund policy after the bottle is opened. 9. Blueprint Cleanse. A celebrity favorite and “2012 diet of the year,” the Blueprint Cleanse is a pre-packaged juice cleanse in which you are sent six bottles of vegan juices made from fruits, vegetables, and spices, customized to your health goals. You drink the juices-and nothing else-for periods ranging from three days to two weeks. The company says their plans range from 860 to 1,040 calories per day. While this is not specifically billed as a weight-loss cleanse, you probably will drop some pounds. 10. Isagenix Cleanse for Life. Isagenix is a multi-level marketing company that specializes in wellness supplements, liquids and powders, along with some snack and meal-replacement products. The Cleanse for Life is a specific supplement that comes in either powder or liquid form which the company recommends be used as part of one of their larger cleansing systems. Proponents say it helps drop weight, increase energy and cure many ailments.

Health depends on a wide range of factors.

A person is born with a range of genes, and in some people, an unusual genetic pattern can lead to a less-than-optimum level of health.

Environmental factors play a role. Sometimes the environment alone is enough to impact health. Other times, an environmental trigger can cause illness in a person who is genetically susceptible.

Access to healthcare plays a role, but the WHO suggests that the following factors may have a bigger impact on health than this:

  • where a person lives
  • the state of the surrounding environment
  • genetics
  • income
  • education level
  • relationships with friends and family

These can be summarized as:

  • The social and economic environment: Including how wealthy a family or community is
  • The physical environment: Including parasites that exist in an area, or pollution levels
  • The person’s characteristics and behaviors: Including the genes that a person is born with and their lifestyle choices

According to the WHO, the higher a person’s socioeconomic status (SES), the more likely they are to enjoy good health, a good education, a well-paid job, afford good healthcare when their health is threatened.

People with a lower socioeconomic status are more likely to experience stresses related to daily living, such as financial difficulties, marital disruption, and unemployment, as well as social factors, such as marginalization and discrimination. All these add to the risk of poor health.

A low socio-economic status often means less access to healthcare. People in developed countries with universal healthcare services have longer life expectancies than people in developed countries without universal healthcare.

Cultural issues can affect health. The traditions and customs of a society and a family’s response to them can have a good or bad impact on health. For example, around the Mediterranean, people are more likely to consume high levels of fruits, vegetables, and olive, and to eat as a family, compared with cultures with a high consumption of fast food.

How a person manages stress will affect health. People who smoke, drink, or take drugs to forget their problems are likely to have more health problems later than someone who combats stress through a healthful diet and exercise.

Men and women are prone to different health factors. In societies where women earn less than men or are less educated, they may be at greater risk than men for poor health.

Seven Dimensions of Wellness

Wellness is the pursuit of continued growth and balance in the seven dimensions of wellness. Many people think about “wellness” in terms of physical health only. The word invokes thoughts of nutrition, exercise, weight management, blood pressure, etc. Wellness, however, is much more than physical health. Wellness is a full integration of physical, mental and spiritual well-being. It is a complex interaction that leads to quality of life.

Wellness is commonly viewed as having seven dimensions. Each dimension contributes to our own sense of wellness or quality of life, and each affects and overlaps the others. There are five main aspects of personal health: physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and intellectual. In order to be considered “well,” it is imperative for none of these areas to be neglected. The Health and Wellness Educators (HAWES) want to inform you, the student, of ways to maximize your personal wellness.


  • Exercise! Even walking 30 minutes a day three times a week will greatly improve your health.
  • Eat Healthy. Avoid fried foods, soft drinks, processed meats, and sweets. Try to include 5 servings of fruits and vegetables in your diet everyday.
  • Don’t skip meals. Especially breakfast, it slows down your metabolic rate and can cause weight gain.
  • Avoid heavy episodic drinking and drug use. No more than five drinks in one sitting for men and four for women. Don’t play drinking games and space drinks over time alternating with a glass of water.
  • Get at least 6-8 hours of sleep every night.

The Different Types of Health Insurance Plans

Point of Service (POS) plans: POS plans are a hybrid of HMOs and PPOs. With a POS plan you will typically have to designate a primary care physician for regular check-ups and referrals. But you can also use out-of-network providers if you’re willing to pay more out of pocket; you’ll usually have a copayment and deductible as well. This type of plan is versatile, and can be right for people who are willing to pay a bit more for extra flexibility.
High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) plans: High-deductible plans cross categories. Some are PPO plans while others may be EPO or HMO plans. This type of health insurance has a high deductible that you have to meet before your health insurance coverage takes effect. These plans can be right for people who want to save money with low monthly premiums and don’t plan to use their medical coverage extensively. HDHPs are often coupled with a Health Savings Account (HSA). If you already contribute money to an HSA, you can buy an HSA-compatible health plan. Money contributed to an HSA can be saved on a pre-tax or tax-deductible basis to pay for qualifying medical expenses, including annual deductibles.
Short-term health insurance plans: Short-term health insurance plans do not comply with the Obamacare law. However, if you missed the Obamacare open enrollment period, a short-term health policy can provide you with some level of coverage you in the meantime.
Short-term insurance offers more limited benefits than major medical, but can help safeguard your finances in the case of a covered illness or accident. The downside to this type of coverage is that it does not meet the minimum essential coverage required by the Affordable Care Act, so you may also be subject to the tax penalty.
In addition, short-term plans can exclude coverage for pre-existing conditions. Short-term insurance is non-renewable, and doesn’t include coverage for preventative care such as physicals, vaccines, dental, or vision.
Note that some states and insurance companies may limit your ability to apply consecutively to short-term plans.
Gap insurance plans: Gap insurance plans are designed to provide an emergency safety net for unexpected medical costs, or other costs you may face in case of a medical emergency. If you don’t have a major medical policy, you might want to get gap insurance to get coverage in case of serious health issues. But, you can also get gap insurance even if you have a major medical policy or short-term policy, as a supplement to provide additional protection.
Gap insurance includes products like:

  • Critical-illness insurance, which pays you a lump sum if you are diagnosed with cancer, heart attack, stroke, and certain other serious illnesses
  • Accident insurance, which gives you a cash payout in case of covered accidents (separately from your automobile accident coverage)
  • Fixed-benefit indemnity medical insurance, which provides cash payouts if you suffer from specific illnesses or injuries covered by your policy

Be aware that catastrophic plans don’t meet the minimum essential coverage required by the ACA. So, if you have a catastrophic plan, you may still be subject to the tax penalty if you don’t simultaneously have a major medical insurance plan.

Ancillary dental and vision plans: The insurance plans described so far—major medical, short-term, and catastrophic—don’t typically cover routine dental or vision care. So, you may need to add separate plans for that kind of care.
To get coverage for dental exams, x-rays, cleanings, and fillings, you’ll need to choose a dental plan. Dental plans may also cover more specialized services such as orthodontia, periodontal treatments, veneers, bonding, dentures, and others.
For coverage for vision exams, eyeglass frames and corrective lenses, contact lenses, and other eye-related care, you’ll need to consider adding a vision plan. Keep in mind that a vision plan can be more critical as you or your family member’s age, even if you’ve never needed vision correction previously.
