Detox Cleanse: The Best and Worst Detox and Cleansing Products on the Market

The supplement industry is not as tightly regulated as it could be and while most companies respect the needs and the health of their customers, there are those only interested in making a quick buck.

This is especially true for the weight loss and detox market, which makes it hard to spot the genuine detox products and the potentially harmful and ineffective ones. In this guide we’ll help you to draw a line between these two groups, allowing you to avoid harmful products and purchase only the safe, natural and effective ones.

Best: Superfood Mixes

Fruits and vegetables are essential for any detox. They are loaded with vitamins, minerals, fiber and healthy enzymes and eating a diet rich in them, even for a short time, will drastically improve your overall health and wellbeing, from your skin and nails to your digestive system.

Working a number of fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet can be tricky, not to mention expensive. Frozen varieties are a good alternative but many other options, from high-sugar juices to canned fruit loaded with glucose and preservatives, will do more harm than good.

The best way to get all of your essential fruits and vegetables is with a superfood mix like Detox Organics.

It uses a combination of organic fruit and vegetable extracts, giving you the best parts of the most beneficial plants and helping you to boost your digestive health and to detox cleanly, naturally and cheaply.

By all means keep eating fresh fruit and vegetables as well, but with a supplement like this you don’t need to worry about not getting enough.

Worst: Slimming Teas (Laxatives)

These can be natural and in most cases they are. The most common and one of the most effective laxatives on the market is senna, which is found naturally in rhubarb. The issue is that they should never be used as a weight loss aid.

Laxative abuse is a big problem in young people with anorexia. It’s an epidemic in those communities and one we’re all aware of. But they are also added to detox and weight loss teas, powders and pills. Some of the celebrities that speak out against anorexia and laxative abuse are the same ones that promote these new “slimming teas”, even though their main ingredient is a laxative.

Firstly, laxatives do not make you lose weight. The reason they are commonly added to detox teas is because millions of Americans are constipated without realizing it and when these laxatives are introduced that problem goes away, they feel better and lighter, and they attribute it to the tea. It’s a con, and if you fall for it and drink them everyday then you run the risk of abusing laxatives which can lead to severe health problems.

Best: Tea

Tea is one of the healthiest things that you can drink. It will hydrate you, provide you with an energy boost and ensure you get your fill of cancer-fighting antioxidants. There are many different types of tea to drink, most of which come from the same plant: Camellia sinensis.

This magical evergreen is mostly grown in Africa, India and China. During the growth stages, the young buds can be plucked to produce white tea or the fully-grown leaves can be harvested and turned into green tea or matcha tea (which is ground into a fine powder and consumed whole). The most popular tea is black tea, which is created when green tea is left to ferment.

All of these teas are rich in antioxidants, but matcha tea leads the way, followed by green tea. Pu-erh tea, which is black tea that has been left to ferment for months and sometimes years, is also thought to be a panacea and has been used as such for many thousands of years.

As for red tea, also known as Red Bush or Rooibos, it comes from a different kind of shrub, a hardy variety grown in Africa. It’s not as beneficial as many other types of tea, but it has shown a lot of promise in recent studies and is a great caffeine-free alternative.

Worst: Diuretics

These can serve a purpose. When used for short periods of time they can help patients who are retaining water to release some of that water. They can also can help boxers, MMA fighters, bodybuilders and other athletes to cut weight, which is probably their primary purpose in this day and age.

However, they should not be used for weight loss over an extended period of time. Diuretics leech water out of your body, causing you to lose weight rather quickly as you basically pee it all away.

But unless you were retaining a lot of water, then it was there for a reason and by using these drugs you run the risk of dehydrating your body and leaving it in a constantly depleted state. You need water to live and by abusing drugs and leaving yourself constantly deprived, you could be damaging your organs.

Best: Milk Thistle

Prescribed to aid with digestion and to limit liver damage in people who drink excessively, milk thistle is a powerfully therapeutic herb that has been in use for many hundreds of years. There are very few side effects to milk thistle and it’s abundantly available, sold in most health food stores for just a few dollars a bottle.

Milk thistle is a great addition to any detox, helping your liver to rid your body of toxins and keeping bouts of acid reflux and indigestion to a minimum. It is often added to “liver cleanse” supplements in order to bump up the price, but these tend to be loaded with diuretics and unnecessary fillers, with milk thistle being the only active ingredient that will benefit you.

Why do people detoxify?

People detoxify their bodies for various reasons, but the overall purpose is to remain healthy and to lose weight. The existence of toxins in the body causes a myriad of diseases and health conditions such as fatigue, achy joints, headache, acne, asthma, irritable bowel and even allergies. If you often suffer from these conditions, then it might be worth trying a detox program. Here are a few of the many benefits that a detox routine can provide.

High quality detox drinks can provide some really powerful slimming effects.

• Aids in weight loss

Losing weight and maintaining a lean body is what most people desire. This can easily be achieved through a detox. Detoxification enhances the body’s ability to burn fat cells naturally.

Body cleansing also prevents health conditions such as diabetes, high-blood pressure and heart disease, which are known to affect body weight. Also, some detox drinks can be used as a substitute meal replacement forcing a healthier diet while you undergo a total body cleanse.

In recent years, colon cleansing even is becoming more popular for weight loss.

• Removes bodily toxins

The primary reason for detoxification is to remove toxins from the body. It is well-documented that body toxins brought about by exposure to harsh elements such as environmental pollutants, industrial waste, and pesticides, cause diseases.

• Eliminates food sensitivities

Most people have hidden food sensitivities that often lead to non-allergic reactions such as inflammation of the skin, fatigue, and malaise. Reactions to gluten and dairy products are some of the most common food sensitivities. Undergoing a detox can eliminate food intolerance and allow individuals to enjoy all types of food products without experiencing any reactions.

• Boosts immune system

The role of the immune system is to protect our bodies from disease-causing pathogens. This system consists of glands, organs, tissues, and cells, which work together to provide immunity against disease. Regular detoxing helps boost the immune system by removing hidden toxins that might cause health problems. In any case, the immune system functions best when the body is clean of toxins.

• Improves sex drive

Bad habits such as excessive drinking and substance abuse, coupled with exposure to environmental pollutants leads to a low sex drive. The existence of toxins has a direct impact on hormonal balance and this affects sex hormones as well. Whole body cleansing not only removes toxins from the body, but also restore hormonal balance subsequently improving sex drive.

• Re-energizes your body

A detox is more of a reboot of the body. It resets your body by eliminating all the sugary foods, caffeine, alcohol and toxic substances that have accumulated in your body. Detoxing increases physical, mental and emotional energy. People who have undergone this cleansing process often experience better sleep and less fatigue.

• Prevents premature aging

While aging is natural, premature aging can occur due to the accumulation of free radicals and heavy metals in the body over time. A detox can help reverse the effects of aging by increasing the absorption of nutrients, antioxidants, and vitamins that reduce oxidative stress.

• Enhances mental strength and clarity

Various types of detoxification processes are applicable in the treatment of mental conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression. Toxins in the body affect not only physical health, but also mental health. Undergoing a detox eliminates these toxins and subsequently enhances mental strength and clarity.

• Prevents chronic diseases

Cancer, heart disease, bronchitis, asthma, and stroke are some of the chronic diseases directly linked to environmental toxins that affect the body. The liver and other organs can sometimes get overwhelmed when trying to get rid of toxins that cause these diseases. That is why detoxing plays an important role in preventing chronic diseases.

• Restores hormonal balance

Hormonal imbalance often comes with aging. The production of hormones such as testosterone in men and estrogen in women subsides with aging. It is a medical fact that the accumulation of toxins in the body affects the normal functioning of glands that produce hormones. One way to mitigate the effects of toxins is to detoxify the body.

• Improves skin quality

Skin conditions such as acne, dry skin, moles and boils all come because of the existence of harmful toxins in the body. The appearance of these skin conditions is a manifestation of the harmful substances in the body. Undergoing a whole body cleanse not only treats these skin conditions, but also improves skin quality.

• Treats substance addiction (drug cleansing)

Detoxification is an important intervention in the treatment of drug dependency and the management of withdrawal symptoms associated with stopping substance abuse. Although detoxification is not a whole treatment of substance addiction, it helps to stabilize the patient during the initial stages of withdrawal. Treatment involves the use of detox pills and detox drinks for a drug test.
Also, Check out our top reviewed detox drinks for drug testing. There are many 1-day solutions that are extremely effective!

• Improves quality of life

Having a clean, toxin-free body is the epitome of healthy living. Detoxification gets rid of harmful substances that might affect the normal functioning of the body organs. Living a healthy, disease-free life is what everyone desires and one way of achieving this is through detoxing.

Are there any side effects to detoxing?

Detoxification is generally a safe process. However, just like any other treatment program, some people may experience side effects. Some of the common side effects associated with detox include:

• Mild to severe headaches
• Changes in bowel movement
• Loss of appetite
• Excessive sweating
• Increased urination
• Nausea
• Muscle and joint pains

These side effects are minor as your body begins adjusting from the total body cleanse. These effects manifest themselves during the initial stages of the detoxification program, but later subside in the course of the program. Nevertheless, always make sure that you consult a professional doctor before joining any detox program.

Types of Detox Programs

Several detox programs do exist. The type of detox program that your body requires depends on a number of factors. The most important of which is your desired objective. For example, there are programs targeted towards:

• Weight loss
• Total body cleansing (to remove illicit drugs)
• Removal of certain toxins (due to environmental exposure)
• Improving metabolism and overall energy levels

As aforementioned, a detox program is not just for illicit drug users. This is a common misconception. Anyone can choose to undergo a detox and realize incredible benefits by doing so.

For simplicity, you can broadly categorize detox programs into two broad categories:

1. Rapid Detox Programs

This type of program is usually applicable to drug users or those seeking rapid weight loss. A rapid detox program does have potential downsides. For example, the rapid results may trigger a repulsive bodily reaction and patients may require medical supervision to overcome the effects of this program. Nonetheless, the rapid detox program makes up for its downsides by providing fast, desirable results.

Here are the benefits of these types of programs:

• Rapid and efficient program
• Higher success rate
• Curbs drug withdrawal symptoms

One rapid weight loss detox program is the master cleanse.

2. Holistic Detox Programs

The holistic detox program focuses on cleansing the body, mind, and soul. This program is designed for individuals who are looking for a more holistic approach that is safe and natural. The holistic detox program combines therapies such as counseling, meditation, yoga, massage, journaling, and dieting to flush out toxins and reverse the effects of substance abuse.

For this program to work effectively, patients need to make a complete lifestyle change to not only transform their bodies, but also reap maximum benefits in the shortest time. The holistic detox process is systematic and focuses on one body organ at a time. This is because body organs are interdependent and follow a systematic approach in their functions.

The benefits of holistic detox programs include:

• Addresses the health and well-being of the whole body
• Removes heavy metals such as lead and mercury
• Provides effective antioxidant support
• Reduced toxin intake
• Enhanced immune system

There are different types of detox supplements

Interest in detox products and supplements has gained traction over the years, thanks to the incredible health benefits that these products provide. In fact, some stores like GNC, have created an entire category of products related to detoxification.

While you can detox your body naturally using natural strategies such as working out, drinking plenty of water and eating organic food, these techniques are limited in their effectiveness. Furthermore, it takes time to achieve any desirable results using these strategies.

Researching and selecting the right detox product is one of the most effective ways of achieving a total body cleanse. Not all products are effective, but we’ve taken the effort to personally review these for you.

Keep in mind: The selection of products below are not as complete and effective as our top 3 programs above. These products are designed to achieve very specific desired results.

The 4 types of detox supplements

Again for simplicity, we’ve broken down detox products into four broad categories. These include detox pills, drinks, teas and drinks for drug testing.

1. Detox Pills

Detox pills are oral tablets or capsules used to remove toxins from the body. These pills contain powerful natural ingredients such as amino acids, herb extracts, and antioxidants that fight toxins and prevent harmful disease-causing pathogens from infecting body organs.

While labeled pills, most could be considered supplements as they contain natural vitamins and minerals.

Author’s pick: SP Cleanse

One exceptional supplement product is the SP cleanse kit from Standard Process. The SP cleanse and purification kit provides a a bundle of detox supplements and shake mixes.

The program usually runs for 21-days and is a proven success for weight loss. Don’t believe me, just check out the reviews on Amazon.

Pills are also used for the purpose of passing a drug test. These work by targeting specific organs of the body, including the liver, kidneys, and bladder to make sure that no traces of drug toxins exist in the body.

All toxins are forced out of the body via urination and dosage normally takes 7 days. Detox pills can sometimes provider a quicker method for a total body cleanse.

Detox pills do not require any prescriptions and they are readily available over-the-counter in most chemists and drug stores. You can also find these pills online, but you should take extra measures to ascertain the authenticity of the product before making a purchase.

Some other current popular detox pill products include:

• Herbal Clean® Premium Detox Kit

These beverages work by targeting the bladder and urinary tract. These drinks consist of vitamins and minerals that flush out chemicals from your body restore the natural composition of the urine. It takes 7 days to achieve a total body cleanse using detox drinks.

Author’s pick: Organifi – Green Juice Super Food Supplement

My favorite product in this category is Organifi’s Green Juice. Everyone seriously needs to give this a try. The results are astounding. This tea consists of strong herbs such as ginger, lemongrass, milk thistle and dandelion that work together to help the liver get rid of toxins from the body. Detox teas are quite popular since they are readily available and come in many different flavors. These teas work by flushing excess water from the body, triggering a laxative effect.

Detox teas are extremely effective and soothing.

They also use their antioxidant-cleansing compound to eliminate waste from the gastrointestinal tract. Nevertheless, the drinking of detox tea is not effective on its own that is why you have to supplement it with a balanced diet to achieve any tangible results.

4. Detox Drinks for Drug Testing

Several organizations require their employees to pass drug testing, as a way of appraising their productivity at work. In most companies, new employees are expected to pass drug testing before they can begin working for these companies.

With the introduction of legalized marijuana, many people are seeking thc detox drinks.

Detox products for drug testing can help flush out drug toxins from the body, just days before undergoing a drug test. In fact, some detox products are so efficient that they deliver results in a matter of hours.

Most of these products focus on eliminating traces of alcohol, marijuana, methadone, and cocaine among other common drugs.

A majority of detox pills and detox drinks for drug testing are highly effective. However, you should be careful when selecting a detox product for drug testing for some scrupulous companies know that you are desperate and they might want to take advantage of your predicament.

Some most popular drug cleansing products include:

Detox Diet

It sometimes feels like everyone is detoxing. From following a juice cleanse to the cabbage soup diet, detox plans entice people with the promises of rapid weight loss and full body transformation. Unfortunately, these detox diets often fail to hold up to more intense scrutiny. Choosing a diet plan that is safe and healthy is important to keep your body in good shape.

What Is the Purpose of a Detox?

Detox diet supporters believe that frequent detoxing can cleanse the body of toxins. They argue that the body accumulates toxic chemicals from the foods we eat, air pollution, water pollution, and other contaminants. According to this theory, even certain lifestyle choices we make, such as smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, or eating heavily processed foods, can lead to the buildup of toxins. Detox diet plans are designed to cleanse the body of toxins and restore optimal functioning.

Common Types of Detox Diet Plans

There are dozens of detox diet plans promoted by celebrities and circulating on the Internet. Some are options for a liver or colon cleanse while others claim to provide full body rejuvenation. Some of the most popular detox diets include:

  • Master Cleanse. The Master Cleanse is perhaps the mother of all detox diet plans. This cleanse involves creating a cleansing concoction that contains water, lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper. It may also entail consuming a beverage composed of warm salt water and laxative tea during the day. The Master Cleanse is designed to be followed for at least 10 days (U.S. News and World Report, n.d.). Proponents of this cleanse claim that it stimulates weight loss and alleviates symptoms of chronic health problems.
  • Colon cleanse. A colon cleanse often includes one of two methods: enemas or laxatives. Both methods are designed to clear the colon of waste. Colon cleanse practitioners believe that this flushes harmful toxins from the gastrointestinal system, improving overall health.
  • Juice fasting. Juice fasting involves drinking only fresh fruit or vegetable juice for the duration of the diet. Some commercial juice fasting plans provide specific juices over the course of the diet, while others permit you to create your own juices at home.
  • Liver cleanse. The liver is the organ responsible for detoxifying the body. Thus, harmful toxins are delivered to the liver to be broken down into harmless metabolites. A liver cleanse is designed to flush these toxins away and restore the liver’s regular functioning. Thus, liver cleanses often focus on drinking vegetable juice, boosting potassium consumption, eating beef liver, and taking specialized supplements (Axe, n.d.).

Does the Research Support the Use of the Detox Diet?

Few research studies explore the effects of detox diets on health; and, because of this, many people in the scientific community remain skeptical about the effects of cleanse or detox plans and some question their safety. The body is equipped with its own natural defense against toxins. This includes the skin, liver, kidneys, intestines, respiratory system, and immune system (Harvard Medical School, 2008). These organs serve to prevent toxins from accumulating in the body and contributing to poor health. Thus, detox diets are unnecessary at best and harmful at worst.

Research does support the effectiveness of diets rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein in reducing symptoms of chronic disease (Sofi et al., 2008). Dietary experts often recommend making daily choices to work toward this diet, rather than focusing on a fad detox diet plan. This approach has better scientific support than detox diet plans.

Health Concerns Associated with the Detox Diet

Some people report that they experience weight loss, boosted energy, and increased focus during a detox diet plan. These effects are likely due to cutting out processed, unhealthy foods, rather than any specific detoxifying effects (Zeratsky, 2015). Furthermore, a cleanse may have negative effects on health. Many cleanse plans restrict intake of protein, leading to significant fatigue. Furthermore, longer term detoxing can lead to vitamin or mineral deficiencies.

In addition to the acute health concerns associated with detox diets, these diet plans simply do not form a long-term solution to health problems. Detoxing may be associated with feelings of rejuvenation or alertness in the short term. However, if the body is truly being exposed to toxins that contaminate its functioning, detoxing is not the solution. Finding ways to incorporate healthy foods into the diet and monitoring exposure to environmental pollutants is a healthier long-term plan.

Although these solutions do not provide the one-size-fits-all appeal of detox diet plans, they make more sensible choices over the long run. Additionally, eating a healthy, varied diet will help you maintain an appropriate weight and will keep your liver working optimally to naturally detoxify the body. If you do choose to follow a detox diet plan, consult with a health professional to ensure that it is safe for you to do so.

The Top 10 Cleanses of 2014

Getty Images

2014 was the year of the cleanse diet. Celebrities swear by them and more and more people have been getting in on the action, whether it’s to detox diet, brighten skin, lose weight, or get a fresh start. And nowhere is that more evident than in Yahoo’s Year in Review, where different health cleanses consistently topped the site’s most popular stories lists. Here, the year’s top 10 most popular cleanses:

1. A Colon Cleanse. Our colons have the important, albeit kind of icky, job of taking digested food from our stomachs, pulling the nutrients out, and excreting waste. While for most of us, our colons perform their duties just fine, every once in a while you might feel like giving a helping hand, er, enema. Colon cleanses come in many different types, methods, and prices, but the main idea is to use water, fiber, and/or supplements to flush all the gunk out of your intestines so you can start fresh. Considering a colonic? Read our expert’s take first.

2. A Liver Cleanse. Just like our colons, our livers play an important role in ridding our bodies of unwanted toxins. The three-pound organ sits just under your ribs and is responsible for cleaning your blood. Some people believe that eating certain foods or taking certain supplements can help your liver perform better-or help it when it’s overwhelmed by too many trips through the drive-thru. However, experts caution that most “liver detox” products don’t work as advertised. Some can actually cause harm to your liver as the organ is responsible for metabolizing any drugs, medications, or herbals supplements. In fact, diet supplements are the number two cause for hospitalizations for liver damage-and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning against these types of detoxes. There are some healthy ways to support your liver in its important detox work, however.Check out this list of seven sane steps to help your liver cleanse itself.

3. The Master Cleanse. While the Master Cleanse has been around for decades, it was Beyonce who made it mainstream. She used the diet to drop some serious weight for her role in Dreamgirls. To do it, you drink a concoction of lemon water, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper, along with an herbal detox tea, daily for at least 10 days-and nothing else. While it may work in the short term, experts say it isn’t safe long-term. And even Miss B said it was “awful” and made her “cranky.” Before you try it, get the facts about the Master Cleanse and what it entails.

4. The 10-Day Green Smoothie Cleanse. Pictures of green smoothies have probably been all over your Facebook feed for months as this popular cleanse has spread through social media. Participants say they drop up to 15 pounds by drinking only smoothies made of blended fruits and veggies for 10 days, as outlined by J.J. Smith’s popular book. While the diet is high in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, it lacks other important nutrients, like protein. To reap all the benefits of a green smoothie cleanse while still eating a balanced diet, check out our Clean Green Food and Drink Plan.

5. A Juice Cleanse. Juicing has long been used as a way to get lots of vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables without having to, well, eat all those fruits and vegetables. So juice cleanses, of which there are many different types, take advantage of this vitamin mega-dose by having people replace all (or part) of their solid food with specially formulated juices. While the cleanses can be a great way to get your daily produce in, experts warn that many juices are high in sugar and lack the fiber that whole fruit has. Try our Non-Juice Detox for all the health benefits of juicing without the blood sugar spikes.

6. Detox Cleanse. Detoxing-or removing unhealthy toxins from the body-is one of the main reasons people give for wanting to do a cleanse. Toxic overload can make you feel sluggish, lead to acne, and can cause allergic reactions-among a host of other ills. But most experts warn against pill- or drink-based detox cleanses. The body’s own mechanisms for cleansing using the liver, kidneys, and colon are sufficient to rid your body of most toxins, they say. Thankfully, there are lots of healthy changes you can make to support your body while it does all the tough detox work. Try our post-weekend detox plan to get back on track after a long weekend of office parties and holiday goodies.

7. Slendera Garcinia and Natural Cleanse. Garcinia Cambogia is a supplement made from the tropical fruit that bears its name (also known as tamarind). It’s high in fiber and boosts serotonin levels in your brain, possibly helping you feel full faster and longer. Slendera is one brand name of a garcinia cambogia supplement that is often combined with a larger cleansing plan involving “natural” laxatives and diuretics. Most experts advise steering clear of laxatives and diuretics, natural or otherwise, unless your doctor advises you to take them for a specific reason. Long-term use can be very harmful to your body. However, garcinia cambogia extracts may offer a small boost for dieters.

8. Dherbs Full Body Cleanse. Dherbs is a company that makes a line of proprietary supplements that claim to cure a range of illnesses and health problems. The Full Body Cleanse is a system of pills or liquid supplements you take on a daily basis for 20 days in addition to following a suggested raw-food diet. Proponents say they have lost nearly a pound a day and feel more energized. However, because of the limited information available on the company’s site, not much is known about what exactly is in the supplements-or how they work. Still interested? You should note they’re pretty pricey and the company has a no-refund policy after the bottle is opened. If you’d like a natural way to boost your health and start weight loss, check out these four scientifically proven vitamins.

9. Blueprint Cleanse. A celebrity favorite and “2012 diet of the year,” the Blueprint Cleanse is a pre-packaged juice cleanse in which you are sent six bottles of vegan juices made from fruits, vegetables, and spices, customized to your health goals. You drink the juices-and nothing else-for periods ranging from three days to two weeks. The company says their plans range from 860 to 1,040 calories per day. While this is not specifically billed as a weight-loss cleanse, you probably will drop some pounds. Interested in a DIY juice cleanse?Try these recipes for matching ingredients to what your body needs.

10. Isagenix Cleanse for Life. Isagenix is a multi-level marketing company that specializes in wellness supplements, liquids and powders, along with some snack and meal-replacement products. The Cleanse for Life is a specific supplement that comes in either powder or liquid form which the company recommends be used as part of one of their larger cleansing systems. Proponents say it helps drop weight, increase energy and cure many ailments.

DETOXIFICATION FOR THE BODY

TYPES OF CLEANSES

The major detoxification systems of the body are:

  • Skin
  • Liver
  • Intestines
  • Kidneys
  • Lungs (to a lesser extent)

The body eliminates toxins by either neutralizing them or by excreting them in urine or feces. Toxins that are unable to eliminate tend to build up in the tissues, typically in the fat stores and bone. The majority of the naturopathic cleanses are geared towards the detoxification organs and eliminating toxins from them and at the same time protecting these organs and the body from any metabolites and free radical damage that may occur when the toxins are realized.

FASTING

One of the oldest and quickest ways to increase elimination if the wastes and enhance the healing processes of the body. Under Naturopathic Supervision and Care, this type of cleansing is helpful and has been studied in the treatment of obesity, chemical poisoning, rheumatoid arthritis, allergies, psoriasis, eczema, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, bronchial asthma.

Usually done for 7 – 10 days. High levels of toxins are often mobilized in the blood stream and may reach blood levels toxic to the nervous system, hence they need to be carried out under supervision of your health car provider (physician or naturopath).

HYDROTHERAPY

Hydrotherapy is the application of hot and cold water to the various surfaces of the body, and had been used for the health promotion and detoxification of the body for centauries. It helps with the elimination and detoxification of various toxins from the skin, especially lead.

The contrast shower is a simple and convenient way to stimulate vitality and promote detoxification, as well as treat generalized areas of pain and soreness. The alternating between hot and cold water while you are showering to stimulate your body to heat itself up and cool itself down, in order to compensate. This temperature contrast helps strengthen and normalize the nervous, circulatory, endocrine (hormonal), musculoskeletal and immune systems and is excellent for helping the body cope with physiological and psychological stress.

SAUNAS

The use of saunas for detoxification purposes is an age old therapy. These are based on the concept that as the body sweats, toxins are released through the skin. Various types of saunas are available these days – such as dry heat saunas, wet heat and far infrared saunas. Infrared light effortlessly penetrates human tissue and activates thermal energy, creating a feeling of heat that is more pleasant for most people than the hot heat of a dry sauna.

Prolonged saunas (over an hour at a lower temperature) are thought to increase the excretion of fatty acids through the skin and thus fat soluble toxins. The detoxification benefits for of extended time, moderate temperature saunas include, and are not limited to:

  • Increased fat breakdown and growth hormone production
  • Increased excretion of fat – soluble chemicals (such as PCB’S) – HENCE THEY MUST BE USED WITH CARE AND UNDER SUPERVISION)
  • Increases excretion of trace minerals
  • Increases excretion of heavy metals

Saunas are contraindicated for pregnant women in their first trimester, young children and elderly people with heart problems.

What is good health?

Health depends on a wide range of factors.

A person is born with a range of genes, and in some people, an unusual genetic pattern can lead to a less-than-optimum level of health.

Environmental factors play a role. Sometimes the environment alone is enough to impact health. Other times, an environmental trigger can cause illness in a person who is genetically susceptible.

Access to healthcare plays a role, but the WHO suggests that the following factors may have a bigger impact on health than this:

  • where a person lives
  • the state of the surrounding environment
  • genetics
  • income
  • education level
  • relationships with friends and family

These can be summarized as:

  • The social and economic environment: Including how wealthy a family or community is
  • The physical environment: Including parasites that exist in an area, or pollution levels
  • The person’s characteristics and behaviors: Including the genes that a person is born with and their lifestyle choices

According to the WHO, the higher a person’s socioeconomic status (SES), the more likely they are to enjoy good health, a good education, a well-paid job, afford good healthcare when their health is threatened.

People with a lower socioeconomic status are more likely to experience stresses related to daily living, such as financial difficulties, marital disruption, and unemployment, as well as social factors, such as marginalization and discrimination. All these add to the risk of poor health.

A low socio-economic status often means less access to healthcare. People in developed countries with universal healthcare services have longer life expectancies than people in developed countries without universal healthcare.

Cultural issues can affect health. The traditions and customs of a society and a family’s response to them can have a good or bad impact on health. For example, around the Mediterranean, people are more likely to consume high levels of fruits, vegetables, and olive, and to eat as a family, compared with cultures with a high consumption of fast food.

How a person manages stress will affect health. People who smoke, drink, or take drugs to forget their problems are likely to have more health problems later than someone who combats stress through a healthful diet and exercise.

Men and women are prone to different health factors. In societies where women earn less than men or are less educated, they may be at greater risk than men for poor health.

The Different Types of Health Insurance Plans

Point of Service (POS) plans: POS plans are a hybrid of HMOs and PPOs. With a POS plan you will typically have to designate a primary care physician for regular check-ups and referrals. But you can also use out-of-network providers if you’re willing to pay more out of pocket; you’ll usually have a copayment and deductible as well. This type of plan is versatile, and can be right for people who are willing to pay a bit more for extra flexibility.
High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) plans: High-deductible plans cross categories. Some are PPO plans while others may be EPO or HMO plans. This type of health insurance has a high deductible that you have to meet before your health insurance coverage takes effect. These plans can be right for people who want to save money with low monthly premiums and don’t plan to use their medical coverage extensively. HDHPs are often coupled with a Health Savings Account (HSA). If you already contribute money to an HSA, you can buy an HSA-compatible health plan. Money contributed to an HSA can be saved on a pre-tax or tax-deductible basis to pay for qualifying medical expenses, including annual deductibles.
.
Short-term health insurance plans: Short-term health insurance plans do not comply with the Obamacare law. However, if you missed the Obamacare open enrollment period, a short-term health policy can provide you with some level of coverage you in the meantime.
Short-term insurance offers more limited benefits than major medical, but can help safeguard your finances in the case of a covered illness or accident. The downside to this type of coverage is that it does not meet the minimum essential coverage required by the Affordable Care Act, so you may also be subject to the tax penalty.
In addition, short-term plans can exclude coverage for pre-existing conditions. Short-term insurance is non-renewable, and doesn’t include coverage for preventative care such as physicals, vaccines, dental, or vision.
Note that some states and insurance companies may limit your ability to apply consecutively to short-term plans.
Gap insurance plans: Gap insurance plans are designed to provide an emergency safety net for unexpected medical costs, or other costs you may face in case of a medical emergency. If you don’t have a major medical policy, you might want to get gap insurance to get coverage in case of serious health issues. But, you can also get gap insurance even if you have a major medical policy or short-term policy, as a supplement to provide additional protection.
Gap insurance includes products like:

  • Critical-illness insurance, which pays you a lump sum if you are diagnosed with cancer, heart attack, stroke, and certain other serious illnesses
  • Accident insurance, which gives you a cash payout in case of covered accidents (separately from your automobile accident coverage)
  • Fixed-benefit indemnity medical insurance, which provides cash payouts if you suffer from specific illnesses or injuries covered by your policy

Be aware that catastrophic plans don’t meet the minimum essential coverage required by the ACA. So, if you have a catastrophic plan, you may still be subject to the tax penalty if you don’t simultaneously have a major medical insurance plan.
Download our 2016 eBook on Understanding Accident and Critical Illness Insurance Plans which is full of infographics and a comparison chart comparing major medical, accident and critical illness insurance plans.
Ancillary dental and vision plans: The insurance plans described so far—major medical, short-term, and catastrophic—don’t typically cover routine dental or vision care. So, you may need to add separate plans for that kind of care.
To get coverage for dental exams, x-rays, cleanings, and fillings, you’ll need to choose a dental plan. Dental plans may also cover more specialized services such as orthodontia, periodontal treatments, veneers, bonding, dentures, and others.
For coverage for vision exams, eyeglass frames and corrective lenses, contact lenses, and other eye-related care, you’ll need to consider adding a vision plan. Keep in mind that a vision plan can be more critical as you or your family member’s age, even if you’ve never needed vision correction previously.
