Of all the beauty treatments out there, removing your facial hair (or any hair, for that matter) is one of the least pleasant activities — but it doesn’t have to be difficult as long as you choose the right method for your preferences, hair type, and needs.

“Don’t worry, almost everyone has some facial hair,” explains April Franzino, GH beauty director. “It tends to be lighter-colored and less coarse than other body hair.” But since facial skin is delicate (and often the first thing people see!), you’ll want to take extra care picking a removal method that’s right for you. We talked with top experts in the field, from dermatologists to estheticians to get the lowdown on everything from plucking to lasering.

So if you want to get rid of that fuzz along your upper lip, hairs on your chin, or sprouts between your brows, here’s what you need to know about each possible way.

How to Remove Facial Hair by Tweezing

Chances are, plucking is the route with which you’re most familiar. After all, tweezers are commonplace in most households so they’re the easiest to reach for when you see some strays.

Tweezerman Tweezerman Slant Tweezer amazon.com $15.43

“Tweezing is better for smaller, localized areas like your brows and chin,” advises Lavanya Krishnan, M.D., a dermatologist based in San Francisco. Just make sure you’re diligent about cleaning them.

Birnur Aral, Ph.D., director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab, recommends wiping the tips of tweezers before and after every use with a cotton pad wet with rubbing or ethyl alcohol or an alcohol wipe, then letting them dry. And you should always store tweezers inside a protective pouch.

“If you invest in a good set like this one from Tweezerman, you want to make sure you protect them,” she explains. Tweezerman’s top-tested pair was a winner in GH’s 2016 Beauty Breakthrough Awards and the brand will sharpen or replace them at no cost to you if they dull through regular use.

Don’t wash the tool with regular soap and water — you run the risk of accidentally dropping and damaging it (thanks to slippery hands) or possibly causing the metal to tarnish or oxidize. “Reputable manufacturers often offer a warranty for natural wear and tear, but dropping tweezers will likely ruin the alignment of the tips, and void that,” Aral adds. And if you’re not sure how to properly shape your brows, take a look at our easy eyebrow guide.

How to Remove Facial Hair by Waxing

Another very common method is waxing. Using either soft wax, which is pulled off with cloth strips, or hard wax that simply hardens and is pulled off on its own, a practitioner can remove hairs from your upper lip, cheeks, brows and chin with ease. But this popular practice isn’t for everyone.

Parissa Parissa Organic Sugar Hair Removal Wax amazon.com $19.99 $15.99 (20% off)

“Waxing can cause irritation because the skin can be sensitive to the products being applied to the surface,” warns Michelle Yagoda, M.D., a cosmetic surgeon based in New York. “An inexact technique may result in incomplete extraction of the hair follicle and breakage of the hair shaft, so the skin surrounding the hair shaft can then become inflamed.” If the retained hair follicle becomes entrapped, it can lead to ingrown hairs. Always read reviews online prior to visiting a new waxing boutique. Your skin will thank you.

With practice and a careful hand, you can also wax at-home. Check out our experts’ tips for facial waxing and some of their top-tested kits.

How to Remove Facial Hair by Shaving

While shaving may be less commonly used on the face than the aforementioned options, it’s the way many women choose to remove their facial hair. But wait — what about that old wives’ tale about hair coming back thicker if you shave?

Schick Schick Xtreme 3 Sensitive Skin amazon.com $9.95

“It’s just a myth that your hair will grow coarser and more densely after shaving,” explains Dr. Krishnan. “The follicle gets cut in half so it feels pricklier, but it’s not any thicker.”

If you feel most comfortable with a razor, just be sure to take precautions so you can get the smoothest, least irritated finish.

“Shave either in the shower or just afterward to allow the skin to soften,” advises Anthony Sosnick, shaving expert and founder of Shaveworks. This is also helpful if you have thick or coarse hair, as the heat of the steam also softens the strands. Then apply a pre-shave oil, which is frequently used by men, but Sosnick notes that it can help women avoid razor burn too. As for the razor itself, Sosnick recommends picking one with two blades, as “they tend to be more targeted for those sensitive areas — and sometimes, fewer blades does the job without the potential for redness and razor burn.”

One big tip from dermatologist Michael Swann, M.D.: Don’t make passes over the same area several times with your razor. Otherwise, you could irritate your skin — not a great look to have front and center on your face. Once you’re done shaving, apply a hydrating moisturizer to soothe your skin.

How to Remove Facial Hair by Threading

Threading is a very common practice in Middle Eastern and Asian countries that involves using a thin, doubled cotton thread pulled super-taut to roll over spots where you wish to remove hairs, thus pulling them out. While it isn’t quite as labor intensive as plucking hairs one at a time, it works best on smaller areas such as the eyebrows, upper lip and cheeks. And unlike using tweezers, threading is much trickier to try if you’ve never been trained in it, so head to a salon with a professional who specializes in it for the best results.

How to Remove Facial Hair with Depilatory Creams

Gone are the days when depilatory creams were pungently scented — there are lots of new ones that are gentle and fragrance-free. These creams are applied to the area with unwanted hair, then wiped away along with the hairs themselves.

“Depilatory creams use chemicals such as calcium thioglycolate or potassium thioglycolate, which break disulfide bonds in keratin, thereby weakening the hair,” explains Christine Choi Kim, M.D., a dermatologist based in Santa Monica, California. If you go this route, always do a patch test first to check for any allergies.

How to Remove Facial Hair with Topical Prescriptions

In addition to the aforementioned over-the-counter or in-salon methods, you can also talk to your dermatologist about trying a topical prescription.

“There are prescription meds like Vaniqa, which is a topical once-a-day treatment used to reduce hair growth,” explains Dr. Krishnan. Here’s the catch: while it’s “very effective,” Dr. Krishnan notes that once you stop, the effect wears off and your hair will grow back.

How to Remove Facial Hair with Laser Hair Removal

If you want something much more permanent, you can try laser hair removal, also known as intense pulse light therapy.

“Lasers shoot a certain wavelength of light that’s specifically absorbed by the hair follicle itself,” says Dr. Krishnan. When that light is absorbed, it’s converted into heat which kills the hair follicle. The advantage this route has over electrolysis is treating a larger portion at a time, while electrolysis (elaborated on below) is individually ablating one follicle at a time — think waxing versus plucking. The downsides: This isn’t an ideal route for those with light or fine hairs, and the cost is high, with sessions ranging from $50 to $300. Plus, you may need several sessions to fully destroy the follicles.

iluminage iluminage Precise Touch amazon.com

If you’re experiencing some sticker-shock, there is another option: An at-home laser. While you’ll pay more upfront, you can do the sessions at-home on your own schedule and you only have to invest in the device once. Our Beauty Lab experts recommend the illuminage Precise Touch. A winner in GH’s 2016 Beauty Breakthrough Awards, it uses a combination of intense pulsed light and radio-frequency energy to nix hair for good.

Unlike other at-home laser hair-removal devices, which aren’t safe or effective for many skin and hair colors, this uses technology previously only available professionally. That means it’ll work for anyone looking for permanent results on their face and body. Our beauty scientist noted that hair regrowth slowed after only six once-weekly uses. Even better? It’s less painful than traditional lasers.

How to Remove Facial Hair with Electrolysis

Another permanent option: electrolysis, which uses concentrated heat to destroy each follicle one at a time to prohibit hairs from growing. This is an ideal method for folks who want permanent hair removal, but can’t do laser removal because their hairs are light or fuzzy.

How to Remove Facial Hair with Epilation

Panasonic Panasonic ES-ED90-P Wet/Dry Epilator and Shaver amazon.com $82.20

Unlike tweezers, which pull out individual strands, epilation devices pluck out multiple hairs at once — great for snagging errant hairs between waxes. “Think of the device as having multiple little tweezers, all going at once,” explains Aral.

How much does it hurt? It’s closest to threading on the pain scale, so more painful than plucking, but not as bad as waxing. Plus, the more you use it, the more accustomed you’ll become to the feeling and you may not even consider it painful after regular use. “Don’t try to use an epilator to shape your eyebrows,” warns Aral. “In between your brows is okay, but be wary of any areas that need a precise touch.” She recommends this for hair removal on your chin, side of the face, and even underarms.

The most common spots where you’ll notice hairs: the chin, cheeks, and the upper lip. Laser hair removal is a pretty surefire way to get rid of them, as are waxing and threading, but there’s no magic potion or silver bullet. With laser hair removal, a laser zaps a hair follicle with heat, destroying it. Meanwhile, medical electrolysis devices “destroy hair growth with a shortwave radio frequency after a thin probe is placed in the hair follicle,” per the FDA. The hair is then plucked out.

“The most effective way to eliminate unwanted hair in the nose or on the chin is with a laser. This is the only treatment modality available that can permanently eliminate unwanted hair. Thirty minutes of numbing cream will make the treatment comfortable and pain-free,” says Kristina Goldenberg of Goldenberg Dermatology in New York City.

But, you’re thinking, every drugstore is crammed with creams promising hairless glory in mere minutes. Yes, but. There’s always a but, you see. “Over-the-counter options are generally limited to depilatories, which break down the chemical bond in hair follicles so they are weak enough to rub off. Depilatory creams and gels can be irritating to gentle facial skin and should be used with caution,” says Nazarian.

young woman remove hair from her mustache using tweezersVladimirFLoyd

Friends of mine take a razor to their faces, which sort of freaks me out. But doctors say it’s actually an easy way to get results.

“Shaving is safest but less efficient because it must be repeated frequently and is ‘unfeminine,’ so many women object even to the idea. One thing to note: Shaving does not make the hairs thicker or coarser,” says Schultz, dispelling a common myth. “Electrolysis is effective but very time-intensive and sometimes causes scars. Truthfully, there is no perfect method of hair removal other than laser.”

There are plenty of home devices available that zap unwanted hairs. But, says Schultz, resist the lure of the tweezers. “Do not pluck them,” he says, especially when it comes to the hairs in your schnoz. “That can cause an infection by the bacteria that normally live inside the nose.”

Concurs Nazarian: “Stick to shaving, or one of the permanent solutions to hair removal, like laser or electrolysis.”

If you’re loath to go the Gillette route, you can try Vaniqa, available by prescription. It’s “a product that’s available for women with unwanted hair. It slows hair growth in the areas in which it is applied. It has to be used for several weeks before a significant result becomes apparent. Unfortunately, no product offers a permanent solution,” says Goldenberg.

Which means, for all intents and purposes: Hair today, and hair tomorrow.

These Hair Removal Creams and Tools Make De-Fuzzing Your Face at Home So Easy

Yuri_Arcurs // Getty Images

For the record: Facial hair on women is very common, completely natural, and can be triggered by certain medications or hormonal changes—and you shouldn’t feel like you need to do anything about it. But if you do choose to remove it, we’re here to help.

Sure, you can head to a skincare professional for electrolysis or laser treatments, but a much more affordable and less time-consuming option is to use at-home products.

With so many hair removal creams, waxes, and tools available, how do you find the best one for your skin? “The key is to select a well-known brand, and to proceed with caution,” says Jeffrey Fromowitz, M.D., a dermatologist based in Boca Raton, Florida.

“If you’re on the more sensitive side, look for a formula that is specifically for sensitive skin,” says Lora Condon, a licensed esthetician based in East Westfield, New Jersey. “You can test it on parts of the body that don’t show just in case there’s a reaction. Most prefer behind the ear, the back of the neck, thigh, or even the inside the wrist.” (Stop using it immediately if you develop itching, raw or burned skin, or red bumps.)

If you prefer an at-home machine to remove facial hair, opt for one that’s safe for all skin types—read the reviews and product descriptions carefully before making your decision.

“I recommend using a few different methods to slow down or eradicate hair growth because everyone’s hair grows differently based on their body type,” says Condon. “Some people will respond better to laser, some to hair retarding creams, some to depilatory creams. Using all three can have much better and longer-lasting hair-free results.”

Here, we’ve rounded up the 11 best facial hair removal products for women—including top-rated creams suited to a variety of skin types and hair removal devices like epilators—for smooth, hair-free skin on your face. Take your pick and say goodbye to those dreaded waxing appointments for good.

Best Overall: Olay Smooth Finish Facial Hair Removal Cream

Dr. Fromowitz recommends this Olay cream because “it’s a two-part system that includes a skin-protecting balm to minimize irritation while still getting great results.” Best for use on fine to medium facial hair, it’s an Amazon’s Choice product that vows to rejuvenate your skin and eliminate peach fuzz (which can increase on your face as you age—thanks, hormones!) in just 8 minutes. While it’s on the pricier side of facial hair removal creams, reviewers rave that it’s worth the price tag and say that it’s super effective, especially on the upper lip area. One customer said, “I love how fast the treatment is, and so much cheaper than a spa.”

Best for Thick Hair: Surgi-Cream Hair Remover for Face

The best way to remove facial hair is to first note what type of hair you have on your face. If it’s thick and unruly, your best bet for removal is a cream that’s specially formulated to get rid of thicker facial hair. “As we age, hair tends to get thicker and darker,” explains Dr. Fromowitz. He recommends this Surgi-Cream for those with darker, coarser facial hair. Simply apply a thick, even layer to your face (test first!), wait approximately four minutes, remove with the included gliding tool, and enjoy hair-free skin. Surgi-Cream is an Amazon’s Choice product and has nearly 100 positive reviews from customers (proof you’re certainly not alone when it comes to having thicker facial hair). Shoppers rave that it’s effective on even the most stubborn, hard-to-get-rid-of hair and also works well on sensitive skin. “After 4 minutes, all the hair was gone, and my skin didn’t hurt at all! This is a miracle product. A true money- and time-saver too,” one customer wrote.

Best Epilator: ElectriBrite Epilator for Women

Epilators are electrical devices that remove hair by the root in a similar fashion to waxing, says Dr. Fromowitz—and, luckily, are more technologically-advanced than they were a decade ago. “As long as you follow their instructions, they’re safe for home use,” he adds. Condon likes this cordless, rechargeable model that includes nine rotating tweezers for powerful hair removal packed in one compact device. Reviewers claim it gets rid of most hairs the first time it’s applied to the skin, so you don’t need to keep running the device over and over again in the same spot (ouch). Its sturdy handle makes it easy to hold, and it even includes a smart light that illuminates those tiny, hard-to-reach places (like around your nose) so you can properly remove hair.

With a 4.3-star Amazon rating, many customers note that it’s easy to use and isn’t super painful. One reviewer called it the “best solution for facial hair” and said, “It was not nearly as painful as I thought it would be. Compact design, good for traveling, easy to operate. I am impressed with the product so far.” Another said it “pulls facial hair painlessly.”

Best Drugstore Option: Nair Hair Remover Cream for Face

Sometimes, classic beauty brands are considered “the best” for a simple reason: They just plain work. “Nair is still the tried and true depilatory cream. This product will soften the hair to either remove it at the surface, or soften it enough to remove it from the root,” says Condon. “It’s extremely important to follow the directions closely so you don’t burn or irritate your skin,” she adds. Condon also recommends avoiding this product if you take prescription acne medications, including Retin-A, because the combo could make your skin hyper-sensitive and potentially lead to irritation.

Customers say that it does have an odor, but most don’t mind since the cream really gets the job done—especially post-menopause, according to reviewers. One shopper even called this classic Nair product “The Holy Grail,” of facial hair removal creams.

Best Portable Device: Bellabe Facial Hair Remover for Women

This springy, palm-sized facial hair ‘plucker’ is easy to bend and twist, providing a sturdier grip on tiny hairs—resulting in quicker and easier plucking—than a basic pair of tweezers. The coil-like material is made of hypoallergenic carbon steel, which won’t pinch the skin as easily as tweezers often do. This handheld device is the best option if you prefer manual tools that don’t require any batteries or charging time.

Here’s how it works: You hold one end of the “spring” in each hand and bend it, then gently roll it on your face. The spring pulls stray hairs from their roots as you slide the device along your cheeks, chin, jawline, and upper lip. Many reviewers swear that it’s pretty painless (but remember, everyone’s skin sensitivity is different). One shopper said, “It’s a little surprising at first, but once you get used to it, it’s easy.” Add this tool to your beauty arsenal if you hate tweezing but still want a fuzz-free face.

Best At-Home Laser Hair Remover: Imene

To permanently zap facial hair, consider investing in an laser hair removal device you can use at home. (Believe it or not, they’re more popular than you think!) For starters, you can personalize treatments in the privacy of your own home—no expensive salon appointments required. This particular one needs to be used a few times per month (the number will vary from person to person) to really work and kiss your hair goodbye for good—but reviewers say that with this product, patience is a virtue. (One user was “beyond impressed” with its performance.) It uses intense pulsed light (IPL) that’s FDA-approved and is safe for use on the skin. “Intense Pulsed Light is great at reducing hair because it uses many beams of light at different wavelengths and heat to kill the root of the hair so it does not regrow,” explains Condon. Just be sure to follow the mini machine’s directions from A to Z.

Best Pain-Free Device: Finishing Touch Flawless Women’s Hair Remover

Shaped like a luxury lipstick, the Finishing Touch hair remover is a discreet, battery-powered device that’s super effective at removing peach fuzz and fine hairs. Not only does it get rid of hair, but it also reveals smooth skin underneath, making makeup application a breeze. Just roll the hypoallergenic head of the device around your face in small, circulation motions, and voila: facial fuzz and stubble is a thing of the past. It’s that simple!

Safe to use daily on all skin types, the rotary shaver is virtually painless, according to reviewers. One customer said it “removes all the hair without irritating my skin and it seems to last longer than other tools I’ve used.” Another reviewer added: “I’m highly allergic to even the wax that is made for sensitive skin; this beauty item will now save me that discomfort. Highly recommend it. Easy cleanup and ZERO pain.” Of note: Some customers said that it’s a good idea to apply a gentle moisturizer after using, since this product is an exfoliant that may dry out skin a bit.

Best Hair Removal Mask: Freeman Cucumber Facial Peel-Off Mask

Peel-off masks can feel like an off-beat form of stress relief (can we all admit it’s weirdly fun to peel them off our faces?), along with efficiently cleansing and eliminating dirt from your pores to reveal smooth, silky skin. “There are some peel-off facial masks that can help remove hair, but it would typically be the fin vellus hairs, which are the peach fuzz-like hairs some people get,” says Dr. Fromowitz. In other words, a peel-off mask isn’t the way to go for thicker, coarser facial hair, but it’s a solid choice for eliminating peach fuzz. This reasonably-priced cucumber mask from industry-leader Freeman gently peels away impurities that cause blackheads and is recommended for normal or combination skin. So, it does all that and removes some baby-fine facial hairs en route? Bonus points.

Best for Sensitive Skin: Avon Fresh and Smooth Facial Hair Removal Cream

Let’s just state the facts: Removing facial hair isn’t a painless activity—sometimes the process can sting or burn, even days later. Thankfully, Avon has heard our cries of beauty pain and created a hair removal solution for sensitive skin. This fragrance-free, aloe formula is gentle enough to painlessly remove fuzz and thin hairs without irritating sensitive skin. (But keep in mind it isn’t recommended for thicker hair.) Customers love this cream for its reasonable price point and say it gets the job done, especially on the upper lip, but to follow the directions carefully and remember that it’s not a permanent hair remover. “It’s quick and easy. You don’t feel any burn like most of hair removal cream and it’s smooth,” one reviewer wrote.

Best Wax Strips: Nad’s Hypoallergenic Facial Wax Strips

Ah, waxing—you either love it or hate it. If waxing is your preferred method of hair removal, opt for these waxing strips from Nad’s (a trusted skincare brand that’s been around since the early 90s) that doesn’t require any prep work. (In other words, you don’t have to worry about heating up the wax with a machine.) You actually use your own hands to warm up the soft, flexible strips, and then simply apply them anywhere on your face—upper lip, between your brows, chin, cheeks, etc.—place pressure on the area, and then peel off. Presto! Hair can be vanished for up to four weeks after a single use. Some customers noted that the more often you wax with these strips (no more than every couple weeks) the longer you’ll be hairless in between. “I got no rashes or marks from the strips and my skin can be pretty sensitive,” wrote one reviewer, while others said they swear by these strips for coarse hair.

Best Natural Wax: Moom Organic Hair Removal with Tea Tree Oil

Image zoom Amazon

Those who gravitate towards organic and natural skin-care products will love this product from MOOM, a Canadian brand founded by a chemist-slash-nature-lover. An Amazon’s Choice product, the all-natural, honey-like formula is made of cane sugar extract, lemon juice, tea tree oil, and chamomile tea.

Here’s how it works: heat up the wax in the microwave or on the stovetop and then apply it to your skin like you would a waxing strip. Then lay a waxing strip (which you’ll need to buy separately) on top. Once the wax is on your skin, pull the strips in the same direction of the hair growth for top-notch efficacy. (Pro tip: Reviewers recommend taking advantage of helpful tutorials on Youtube for more tips on how to properly use the product.)

When it comes to safely waxing at home, Dr. Fromowitz stresses that, “the key is to follow the directions carefully.” If the kit includes heating the wax, be very careful about temperature to avoid burns, he says. And though this wax is certainly gentle enough to be used on the face, it can also be used all over your body, so you really get the most bang for your buck.

Top 5 Facial Hair Removal Methods

Whether you’re dealing with dark, coarse growth, or a blanket of blond fuzz, facial hair is a troublesome issue. Thanks to tried and tested procedures and technology, there are a number of methods that you can test at home or at the salon to effectively reduce or remove stubborn facial hair.

Here, we explain five different facial hair removal methods, so that you can choose the best one for your skin.

The wax is usually warmed so that it can be distributed evenly over the skin and in the direction of the hair growth. Once the wax cools and becomes rigid, it traps the hair. The wax is then quickly pulled off to pull the hair out of the follicles.

Cold wax also exists in the form of strips that are patted onto the skin and then peeled off.

Target areas: Eyebrows, upper lip, and sideburns.

How long does it last: 5-6 weeks.

Pain level: The process can be very painful and lengthy if one is waxing a large area.

Pros: Waxing removes a large body of unwanted hair at once. It’s a low-cost procedure that can be done by a professional at a salon or at home using the various waxing materials available on the market.

Cons: May result in ingrown hairs. Also, you have to be extra careful when handling the hot wax to avoid burning your skin.

Tip: You can avoid ingrown hair by exfoliating the skin before waxing. Exfoliation removes dead skin from the layer of epidermis that traps the hair.

Threading is an ancient Indian and Middle Eastern hair removal technique. It’s performed with a cotton thread, which is doubled, twisted, and rolled over the target area to trap unwanted hair. The hair is then yanked out of the follicle.

Target areas: Eyebrows, between the eyebrows, around the hairline, and other parts of the face.

How long does it last: 3-6 weeks.

Pain level: Threading is a relatively painless method. You may experience some discomfort when the hair is tugged.

Pros: Threading is one of the most sanitary hair removal methods due to only a thread touching your face (and is immediately discarded after use).

Cons: Since threading is rather complex, it should be done by a skilled professional at a salon.

Tip: Wait at least two hours before applying any creams or cosmetics around the area following threading to avoid bacteria entering your open pores.

Once the hair shaft is long enough to be gripped and pulled, take your tweezers and pluck out unwanted hair with a steady hand.

Target areas: Eyebrows, between the eyebrows, along the jaw line.

How long does it last: 3 weeks.

Pain level: Mild discomfort may be experienced.

Pros: Tweezing is ideal for shaping the eyebrows and removing small, hard-to-reach hair. Good tweezers are relatively cheap and can last a long time. You can pluck unwanted hair at home, in front of a mirror.

Cons: This is a slow and tedious process. If not done carefully, tweezing may cause cuts and nicks to the skin, and also result in ingrown hairs—not to mention over-plucking can ruin the shape of your eyebrows.

Tip: Eyebrow hair tends to grow back slowly, so make sure to avoid over-tweezing.

This treatment gets rid of unwanted hair for good. It employs laser technology to permanently remove hair on any part of the body, sparing constant tweezing, threading, and waxing.

Target areas: Anywhere you find facial hair.

How long does it last: Results are permanent if you follow through with all the treatments.

Pain level: You will experience a stinging sensation each time a follicle is zapped. Some describe it as an elastic band being snapped on the skin repeatedly. People with darker skin are more likely to get burnt or experience discoloration.

Pros: Repeated sessions get rid of unwanted hair permanently.

Cons: Laser treatment requires five to 12 sessions (that can be very painful) for permanent results. A session can range from US $200 (AED/SAR 734) to US $900 (AED/SAR 3,305), making the overall procedure quite pricey.

Tip: Make sure that the target area is clean and free of hair before undergoing the laser treatment.

Hair removal creams are simple to use and don’t require professional assistance. Smear the cream on the desired areas and leave for three to 15 minutes. During this time, the chemical dissolves the unwanted hair and afterwards the substance can be washed or wiped off.

Target areas: Upper lip and between the eyebrows.

How long does it last: Since hair is removed from the surface only, it grows back within 1-3 days.

Pain level: There shouldn’t be any pain, only a slight tingling sensation. If the sensation becomes unbearable, that means your skin is too sensitive or you have kept the cream on for too long.

Pros: Creams can be purchased for low prices at drug stores and pharmacies. You can use them at home.

Cons: The smell can be overbearing and the hair regrowth is quick.

Tip: As with any skin product that contains chemicals, make sure to do a patch test before using the creams.

Although the problem of facial hair is rarely serious, it can cause embarrassment to some women. Therefore, we have come up with an article to help women come out of this problem through the use of easy-to-do home remedies without having to spend oodles.

Causes of Thick Facial Hair in Women

All women have facial hair which is very fine, and therefore, not noticeable. However, there are few who may have thick facial hair. The fuzz of hair on a woman’s face can be due to a number of reasons. Let us discuss them in detail.

  • Hormonal problems are one of the main causes of facial hair in women.
  • If hormones are not the ones for the fuzz on your face, blame it on your genes.
  • Some underlying health issues like Polycystic ovarian disorder can also cause this problem.
  • Cushing syndrome can also cause hirsutism.
  • Virilization, a condition in which a female develops secondary male sexual characteristics causes thick facial hair in women.
  • Women suffering from congenital adrenal hyperplasia produce less of androgen and cortisol hormones, causing hirsutism.

Home Remedies to Remove Unwanted Hair on Face

Facial hair in women can be quite a nuisance. It can make even the prettiest face look odd. Therefore, removing them is the only solution. However, getting it removed professionally can pinch your pockets. Therefore, use the following home remedies to get rid of the unwanted fuzz from your face.

1. Lemon Juice and Sugar

This is an ancient beauty technique to remove unwanted hair.

  • Sugar
  • Lemon juice

How to Make

  • Mix sugar, lemon juice and very little water.
  • Stir it well to dissolve the sugar until the sugar becomes a sticky granular paste.

How often to Use

  • Apply this every alternate day.

Why does It Work?

  • When the pack is applied, it sticks to the hair and when removed, the hair too comes off. The lemon juice bleaches the rest of the hair.

Suitable Skin Type

  • All skin types

  • People with dry skin should not keep the pack in the face for more than 15-20 minutes.

2. Banana and Oatmeal

Apply the paste and massage it in a circular motion against the direction of hair growth.

What Should Look?

1. Skin sensitivity

Do you have a sensitive or normal skin? You can only tell this based on the way your skin reacts to other skin products.

If you apply products on your skin and they end up affecting you but don’t affect other users, it is straightforward that you need to get the best facial hair removal cream for sensitive skin.

As such, consult with a dermatologist first before testing any of these products.

2. Facial Hair Removal Ingredients

What ingredients are included in the cream you intend to apply? Are they natural or chemical ingredients?

You will want to know this since you do not want to use a cream that will result in unexpected long-run effects. So, contact a doctor who can tell you more about the ingredients featured in the product you want to use.

Better opt for natural components as compared to chemicals. After all, you do not want to use a product that will tamper with your skin hormones unexpectedly.

3. Hair Texture

Do you have a soft or rough hair texture? Note that there are depilatories that only work to remove fine hair.

So, if you have a coarse hair texture, make sure that you consult enough to find out if the product you intend to use will work to eliminate your coarse hair.

4. Smell

Some individuals have a great sensitivity to smell. If you are one of them, you will want to get a product that does not smell bad.

As such, talk to customers who have recently used the products and get their views about the smell. You may want to get a product with an added fragrance too to avoid dealing with the bad scent. So, be on the lookout for this also.

5. Cream Effectiveness

How long does the cream take before removing the unwanted hair? You may not have all the time waiting for it to remove the hair.

What’s more is that you do not want to purchase a cream that will render itself useless because it cannot remove all unwanted hair.

So, if time is a concern for you, ensure that you consider the recommended waiting period before getting the product.

Also, get to listen and check on what previous customers have to say about the product for you to get a useful hair removal cream.

6. Potential Side Effects

Every depilatory has its side effects. Some can give severe side effects while others produce results that you can deal with.

As such, seek to know the worst that can happen after using the cream. Such a measure will let you stay prepared for any result to avoid severe issues after using the product.

Be sure to avoid facial hair removal creams that include mercury since these can result in a long run severe reaction.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

What causes chin hair in females?

As aforementioned, having chin hair does not necessarily symbolize a medical condition. One of the major reasons for chin hair growth is a hormonal imbalance. This condition happens when a female produces testosterone that exceeds normal levels. Some medicines can also lead to excessive hair growth on the face for women.

How can I reduce chin hair?

There are several ways you can get rid of the unwanted chin hair. Shaving is one of the options. However, this is not ideal for women and will only provide a solution for a few days. Laser treatment is another option but this won’t be perfect for all since it is very expensive. Now, the only reliable and pocket-friendly method remaining is the use of facial hair removal creams.

What cream can I use to stop facial hair growth?

Although there are so many options out there, not all are perfect for you. The product you choose should be effective in hair removal and at the same time very friendly on the skin. Our options are among the market’s few hair removers you can use.

What is the perfect facial hair removal for sensitive skin?

Even though our list contains some of the market’s top-notch options, not all are made for sensitive skins. Therefore, before you pick one from the list, ensure that you choose the one that is made for sensitive skin.

Does plucking chin hair make it grow more?

Although there is a common belief that plucking chin hair will make it grow back thicker, professionals tend to differ with this notion. Most experts argue that how your hair grows is influenced by hormonal and genetic factors.

The facial hair removal creams discussed above are some of the cool facial hair removal creams worth giving a try.

I suggest Olay face hair removal cream especially for those who get some redness and irritation after using facial hair removal creams.

This is because it includes a single set of a shielding balm, which acts to protect your skin from a direct contact with the removal cream.

As such, it helps reduce the side effects that result from using depilatories. Moreover, I recommend our third pick for those with sensitive skin and those with sensitivity to bad smells.

The cream works to eliminate coarse and fine hair without any burning or itching.

It does not also have a weird smell, meaning that it will not affect you if you usually have an issue with strong smelling products.

So, be sure to try out one of these products for the best outcomes and value for money. Also, do not buy a product due to a lower price, but be sure to get one that is worth the cost since that’s the only way to keep your skin safe.

Skin Issues

Before purchasing or applying these products, you need to check with any particular problem you skin might possess apart from the sensitivity. For example, if your skin has a cut or scar, then applying this product might cause irritation and redness, and it is strictly prohibited on such a skin.

Hair Removal Ingredients

The hair removal cream that you are planning to use may be composed of several chemical and natural ingredients. However, not all creams consist of natural ingredients. Of course, the natural ingredients based solution is all we recommend which does not cause any side effect leaving the skin moisturized and smooth. The chemical tends to damage the skin tampering the hormones. Hence, please check with the product ingredients and opt with the product composed of natural components.

We should certainly avoid the hair removal creams that have Mercury in their composition; as such a solution damages the skin for a long time, which is sometimes unrecoverable.

Hair Texture

The texture of the hair is another essential factor which determines the success of the product. You need to check whether you have fine, medium, or coarse hair. This is because the solution is developed for different types of hair like the hair removal solution that works on beautiful hair might not work on coarse hair and vice versa. Hence, check on the hair texture that the product might need to treat before purchasing.

Some people are susceptible to smell. These depilatories smell very strong and at times, foul. However, the manufacturers have worked on this issue and attempted to make the solutions odorless or with add some pleasant fragrance which the user can use easily. If you are also sensitive to the smell, you can check with the product, customer reviews and ask the near ones who might have used the product.

Waiting Period

This means the duration you need to wait for the hair removal treatment to be completed once the solution is applied to the area. Of course, no one would like to remain sitting for a long time. Different brands offer different time interval, which usually ranges from 4 minutes to 10 minutes. You need to check after a particular time in a small area for the result; if it’s still not done, you need to keep for a bit more. But beware, not to keep the solution exceeding the maximum time limit as it might damage your skin. Hence, check the waiting time when purchasing the product.

Apart from serving the primary purpose of removal of facial hairs, we need products that support the skin integrity, enhance the appearance keeping the skin hydrated. Few hair removal creams promise to hydrate the skin where they keep the skin hydrated for a defined interval, which is about 1 to 2 days.

The dead skin cells might be developed, which blocks the hair follicle. This leads to ingrown hairs. Hence the skin needs to be exfoliated for removing the dead skin cells. Therefore, we should always check with the product details, whether it exfoliates the skin or not.

Moisturizing the Skin

The skin needs to be moistened daily to keep it soft. We should check whether the product we are planning to use does not dry out the skin after the application. The solution should be such that it does not cause skin dryness. It should moisten the skin, making it soft, smooth, and supple.

Potential Side Effects

Almost all depilatory creams have some side effects. It just differs on the level that is some cause very severe effects like redness, bumps, nicks, irritation, burn marks, peeled skin, etc. while some are such which can be treated easily. Hence, we need to check on the user’s reviews that have used the product.

Nature offers us many things that are a boon for our skin, but we never have the time and availability to use these natural things. Many of the hair removal creams comprise of various natural ingredients like to name a few I would say almond milk, Aloe Vera, extracts of flowers and leaves, etc. Hence, when we opt for a product with these ingredients, our skin gets the benefits of these natural elements making it tremendous and sheen.

Few Questions And Answers To The Best Possible Knowledge

If We Have An Option Of Shaving, Why Should We Opt For Hair Removal Creams?

Yes, shaving is also an option and in fact, the most traditional method when no such products were developed. But if you shave, the hairs appear again within two to three days, which forces you to make the shaving again. Also, the skin surface becomes very rough, and sometimes the shaved area itches too much. These problems can be prevented through the hair removal cream application, which lasts up to 15 to 30 days without any itching problem.

Do Hair Removal Creams And Razors Act In The Same Way?

When a razor is used, it removes the hair above the skin surface leaving all the sharp stubbles that makes the skin surface harsh to touch whereas the hair removal creams treat each hair follicle eliminating them below the surface, leaving the skin soft and smooth.

Does The Hair Removal Cream Turn The Skin Color Into Black?

Absolutely No! The products are formulated in a way which helps to clean your complexion and hydrate it. The skin does not turn black to post its application. The only thing that should be cared about is the amount of time you wait after the product is applied. We should not keep the product after the maximum time limit defined in the instructions of the product.

It Is True That More The Hair Removal Creams Are Used; The Re-Grown Hairs Are Thicker?

No. The hair removal creams are developed, keeping in mind to reduce the hair re-growth rate. Also, the few hairs that re-grow are same as the original texture and do not become thick.

Do People With Sensitive Skin Can Use Hair Removal Cream?

Good News for you! You can use these depilatories even if you have sensitive skin. Companies have worked on this issue and made solutions that are particularly for sensitive skin, which easily removes the hair without causing any side effects.

Does The Hair Grow Back At The Same Time, Whether Cream Or A Razor Is Used?

This is absolutely a big myth. When we do the shaving, the hair grows back within 2 to 3 days. While if we make use of the hair removal cream, the effect is long-lasting and almost thrice to that of the shaving method. As the hairs are treated from inside the skin surface, they tend to re-grow very slowly, and it takes about 15 to 25 days to grow back.

How Can I Get Rid Of Hirsutism?

This is a problem seen in almost 5 to 10 percent of women where the hairs are grown above the normal range. This can be caused due to various reasons. If you have got this naturally, i.e., it is passed on from you female relative to you then there is no permanent solution except to opt for laser or electrolysis method whereas if it has occurred due to obesity or PCOS than a doctor treatment would help you to overcome it.

How Is Bleaching Different Than Depilatory Cream?

Bleaching is a process which lightens up the hair rather than removing it. It comprises of a Powder and a cream which are mixed in a 1:3 ratio. This method makes the hair very light, blending them with the skin color, which makes the hair less visible whereas, in hair removal cream, the hairs are removed from the surface.

Nature is not something that can be fought with as you are never going to win the battle but would waste your precious time. If you are the one having excess hair, embrace the fact as a first step. If it naturally resides in your body, then accept the truth and if it’s a result of body’s hormonal imbalance, try to cure those first with a proper medication from Doctor which will automatically cure this hair problem.

We are blessed for living in a generation where everyone has the solutions for most of the problem. With so many options available to treat the excess hair problem. We need to study them, think about their possibilities, think which method best suits us based on budget, the intensity of hair growth, and move ahead to cure the problem. I hope you get clear with the picture and get the right direction to move forward.

The most romantic holiday of the year is a great opportunity to swap bulky sweaters for flirty dresses. For those of us that get lazy during the off-season, hide weeks of hair growth under layers of clothing but prefer a smooth look, it also means it’s time for a date with a razor.

While razors are often quick and inexpensive, making them go-to hair removal tools, they’re only effective at removing surface hair. So, post-shave stubble may appear faster than we’d like.

Luckily, for those tired of reaching for the razor so often — and those interested in minimizing the risk of those annoying ingrown hairs — there are other ways to keep hair away.

From depilatory creams to at-home laser hair removal devices, there’s something to meet each person’s level of comfort. But, each method isn’t meant for all skin and hair types.

To give you a running start, we consulted three beauty and skin experts about the best hair removal practices and products.

Best home waxing

Before starting any hair removal process, there are a few first steps you should take:

  • Find a well-lit area
  • Make sure skin is exfoliated
  • Remove any extra moisture from the skin

A trick some estheticians use is adding a bit of baby power to the skin, said Jennifer MacDougall, on-air beauty expert who’s worked with Gucci, Vogue, L’oreal and more and a key hair stylist for Project Runway.

  • 1. Nair Wax Ready-Strips

Nair Wax Ready-Strips are made with 100 percent natural rice bran oil, don’t require any rubbing or heating and can be purchased for any part of your body. The strips work like wax-filled stickers which remove hair from the root. MacDougall recommended these strips for those just getting into waxing. “You don’t have to worry about burning yourself,” she said. “That’s one of the biggest things that someone can do if they don’t know how to do this themselves.”

  • 2. Yoffee Nose Wax

Stuff We Love

Get a daily roundup of items that will make your life easier, healthier and more stylish.

A ready-strip may not be suitable for the insides of nostrils. But, Yoffee Nose Wax makes it simple to remove hair up there. The unisex product, made of natural beeswax which MacDougall describes as “gum-like,” comes with an applicator. Spread the wax on the applicator and insert it directly into the nostril for about 90 seconds, then remove it.

The wax must be preheated for about two minutes, but other than that the process is quick and easy.

  • 3. Parissa Quick and Easy Wax Strips

A favorite of beauty artist Daniel Chinchilla, whose clients include celebrities like Ariana Grande and Keke Palmer, these Parissa wax strips are also perfect for beginners. Rub the strips in between your hands, press them onto the skin in the direction of hair growth and remove them to pull the hair directly out of the root. Chinchilla said some things should be left to the professional, though. “Make sure you don’t try and wax your eyebrows yourself. You could easily mess up and remove too much,” he cautioned.

  • 4. Veet Ready-to-Use Wax Strip Kit

An inexpensive option for wax strips for sensitive skin, this one skit comes with 40 strips and 6 finishing wipes. Veet’s formula locks around the smallest of hairs, from as short as 1/16 of an inch. The ready-to-use strips can also be used on any part of your body. Though, there is a separate option specifically for underarm, bikini and face.

  • 5. Philips Satinelle Hair Removal Epilator

Though an epilator isn’t a wax, it also removes hair directly from the root. But, it takes a bit longer to use than wax, so it’s only good for people capable of enduring a bit more discomfort. An Amazon best-seller, the Philips Satinelle Epilator grips and removes even the shortest hairs on either wet or dry skin.

Best depilatory creams

Unlike waxing, which may cause some discomfort to those with a low threshold for pain, depilatory creams are painless. They can get messy, but they are usually pretty inexpensive.

The creams work by dissolving hair at or just below the surface of the skin, making it easy to wash away. It’Make sure your skin doesn’t react poorly to depilatory cream by testing it out on a small patch of hair. The effectiveness of the cream may also vary depending on amount of hair and hair type.

  • 1. Nad’s Sensitive Hair Removal Cream

Chinchilla said this is one of his go-to products for removing unwanted hair at home. The cream is generously applied to the skin for at least four minutes and then washed off: quick, painless and easy. This Nad’s Hair Removal Cream is great for sensitive skin since it’s formulated with natural extracts of melon, aloe vera, avocado oil and honey.

  • 2. GiGi Hair Removal Lotion

For hair removal on the arm, legs and bikini area, Gigi Spa offers this inexpensive option. Apply the hair removal lotion to the skin after it’s dampened and leave it on for up to 10 minutes. The lotion is enriched with cocoa butter, vitamins C and E and natural oils to keep skin smooth once the unwanted hair is washed off.

Best at-home laser hair removal

While waxing and depilatory creams can provide temporary results, the thought of never having to do either is pretty tempting. With laser hair removal that thought can become reality. Board-certified dermatologist Jennifer Chwalek, from Union Square Dermatology in New York City recommended heading to a professional since in-office lasers are stronger and “utilize wavelengths that are better at targeting the hair follicle.” But, she also noted that it’s possible to successfully perform laser hair removal at home.

“The at-home devices are reasonable for light skin patients with dark hair who have a few small areas they want to treat or who want to supplement their in office treatments with an at-home treatment,” said Chwalek. It’s not a great option for those with darker skin, she added. And, if you’re unsure whether an at-home device is right for you, consult a dermatologist.

  • 1. Tria Hair Removal Laser Precision

Chwalek recommends this Tria hair removal device since it’s more similar to in-office technology than other brands. “Tria Beauty uses diode technology which is similar to the lasers we use in office for laser hair removal,” said Chwalek. “Most of the other home devices use IPL technology which does not always target the hair follicle as specifically as the diode wavelength.” If you’re interested in treating larger areas like the legs, Tria Beauty also offers the Tria Laser 4X made to handle those bigger areas.

  • 2. Remington iLight Pro Intense Pulsed Light Hair Removal System

Chwalek also recommended this Remington hair removal system. The product promises permanent hair reduction just after three treatments. Though a lot more pricey than waxing and depilatory creams, the permanent hair reduction can result in longer-term savings, since frequent hair removal treatments won’t be necessary after the hair is gone.
