Why We Like It: For runners used to following basic metrics—i.e., pace, time, and distance—the Forerunner 45 is a user-friendly entry into more advanced territory. Bluetooth connectivity syncs data to the Garmin Connect phone app. Like a personal assistant, the watch notifies you about calendar appointments and incoming calls. Besides recording your sleep, stress, and heart rate, a body battery feature—a number out of 100 that represents your energy level—lets you know if it’s advisable to workout or take a rest day. The smaller 45S is also available, but the 45 itself has enough notches to fit comfortably on our tester’s five-inch wrist. Some features may seem superfluous—personally, she could do without the Garmin Coach, which provides training plans and custom workouts—while others, like the assistance/incident detection feature, are a nice touch. However, your phone must be within close proximity for the safety feature to work.

Many runners will appreciate that instead of a touchscreen, the 430 has five locking buttons, which make it both easier to operate with gloved hands and immune to accidental pauses on runs—the automatic start/stop feature does the latter for you. It can download workouts and intervals, monitor your effort during the training session, and continuously read your heart-rate so you know how well you’re recovering afterward, too. We also liked the M430’s few more runner-specific updates like improved Strava integration, a power-saving GPS mode for those runs that go a little longer than intended, and a one-piece design that is comfier on small wrists and easier to charge. (Unlike the 200, you won’t need to remove the 430’s watch face from its band to plug in.) According to our tester, the only drawback is that the watch and required Polar Flow smartphone app are not especially intuitive, and provided instructions are pretty lacking. “There’s a learning curve, and you have to take it upon yourself to play around and figure out all it can do,” he said. “But once you get past those barriers, it’s well-performing and reliable.”

Our tester loved that the watch has zero learning curving to use. “It does two things: it tells the time, and it tracks activities (including swims and bike rides) with the single addition of GPS,” he said. “That’s all—no heart rate, no vertical oscillation, no text alerts pinging me in the middle of a run. And I love it.”

The best gym smartwatches will track each lift and every step you take in the gym. If that’s something you’d benefit from, we’ve got some great recommendations for you.

It’s important to note that regular fitness trackers have little to offer if your workouts heavily focus on weightlifting. The market is such that it caters to running, swimming and cycling rather than lifting weights. Even something as simple as a push-up, or pull-up, isn’t tracked by standard wearables.

The market is also such that there are few smartwatches and fitness trackers available that cater to gym-goers. However, devices with a heart-rate sensor, step tracking, and calorie counting will help you better understand your fitness. Also, smartwatches with Bluetooth let you wear wireless earbuds without a bulky phone in your pocket.

The recommendations below include a wide range of devices that are useful for most workouts. We’ve listed the “best of the best”, which means we’ve listed the best devices for each typical workout in the gym. So, without further ado, let’s begin:

Best smartwatch for casual gym workouts: Fitbit Versa 2

If you turn up to the gym to lift a few weights, do some core exercises and jump on a treadmill (general fitness), the Fitbit Versa 2 is an excellent choice. It has 15+ exercise modes, automatic activity switching and real-time heart rate tracking. The PurePulse technology behind this is one of the most accurate on the market.

You can store and play 300+ songs on the Versa and connect your Bluetooth headphones for wireless listening. One of the best features for gym-goers is the on-screen workouts, which bring you personalized workouts and coach you through every move. The watch comes with run, swim, bike, treadmill, weights, and workout modes.

Best smartwatch for weight lifting: Atlas Wristband 2

The Atlas Wristband 2 is designed to help you get more from weight training. It tracks dumbbell and bodyweight exercises and comes with pre-loaded workouts to help make sure you change it up regularly. There are around 70 exercises preinstalled and tapping any of these exercises gives you a breakdown of them.

Because it’s worn on the wrist, the Atlas Wristband 2 can track any exercise that involves wrist movement. It automatically detects workout types and has a freestyle mode, which just tracks your workout and lets you get on with it. Best smartwatch for swimming: Polar V800

If you want a smartwatch that’ll track your lengths, pace, stroke rate and heart rate, the Polar V800 is what you want. It’s rated for 3 ATM and tracks your swimming time, intensity levels, calories burned, temperature, stroke style, stroke rate and more. It’ll measure your heart rate underwater and even comes with GPS.

That GPS inclusion is important because it means the V800 supports both pool and open water swimming. GPS is used to accurately track open water sessions. The V800 recognizes four types of common swimming stroke: Freestyle/crawl; Backstroke; Breaststroke; and Butterfly. This should suffice for most casual and advanced swimmers.

Best smartwatch for triathletes: Suunto Spartan Trainer

The Suunto Spartan Trainer is a lightweight GPS smartwatch with heart rating tracking and automatic activity detection. It’s designed to accurately track the speed, pace and distance of your runs, swims and cycling sessions. The onboard Trainer helps you get more from your workouts with graphs and automatic metric calculation.

You can create training intervals and customize the different sport modes to prioritize different aspects of the triathlon. When you head outdoors, the GPS feature gives you Route navigation with Points of Interest (POI) and an Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) to help you navigate the world. An excellent choice for the triathlete.

Best smartwatch for indoor cycling: Garmin Fenix 6

The Garmin Fenix 6 is an outstanding smartwatch for all fitness enthusiasts. It tracks bike, indoor bike, outdoor run, indoor run, outdoor swim, indoor swim and triathlon workouts. But it’s the cycling stuff that’s best here. It comes preloaded with Bike, Indoor Bike and MTB profiles. This caters for most cyclists from casual to advanced.

With its 1.9” display and Bluetooth, ANT+, GPS, GLONASS, WiFi and USB connectivity, the Fenix 6 takes care of the basics and more. The advanced stuff? It has Garmin Elevate, the most accurate heart rate tracking technology on a smartwatch. Excellent navigation features and power meter, speed and cadence-sensor capability complete the package.

Best smartwatch for advanced running: Garmin Forerunner 935

The Garmin Forerunner 935 is incredibly comfortable to run with. It has GPS built and a heart rate tracker built-in as well as an altimeter and compass. It tracks treadmill runs and outdoor runs down to a tee. You can even plug it into a turbo trainer, to track cadence, stride length, ground contact time, balance and vertical oscillation.

Importantly, all information is logged in the Garmin app which is accessible with a few swipes of the display. You’re displayed running data in real-time, such as your heart rate, run time and calorie burn. The battery life is also excellent – you’ll get 24-hours of use out of it with GPS turned on, or 60 hours with it turned off.

Best smartwatch for casual running: Amazfit Stratos

If you’re more of a casual runner (perhaps you jump on a treadmill a few times a week, or go running when the sun’s shining), the Huami Amazfit Stratos is an excellent choice. It has GPS and GLONASS tracking and a heart-rate sensor. It’s got Bluetooth for your music and tracks running, jogging, walking and elliptical machine workouts perfectly.

One of the most useful design features of this smartwatch is the inclusion of physical buttons on the side of the case. These allow you to pause workouts quickly and set a lap timer equally as fast. It’s also waterproof to 5 ATM and has VO2 max analysis, to help you understand how your fitness improves over time.

Best smartwatch for HIIT workouts: Garmin Vivosport

If you want a smartwatch/ tracker to track your HIIT workouts, the Garmin Vivosport is hard to beat for the price. It accurately tracks your heart rate on the wrist and automatically detects different body movements. This is one of Garmin’s smallest activity trackers, so it won’t get in the way of your workouts and it also packs GPS into its frame.

It’ll also score your VO2 max. Workout for a week, and it’ll give you a score based on your HIIT and activity performance. This can help you assess how your fitness improves over time. Importantly, the Vivosport has Garmin Move IQ so automatically classifies multiple activities. This is what makes it perfect for high-intensity interval training (HIIT).

Best smart device for boxing: Hysko

It isn’t a smartwatch because it doesn’t have a screen, but you’d expect that since a smartwatch would get smashed when boxing. The Hysko is instead a tracker, which you wear under your tape (or over it). It tracks your hands’ movement 1000 times per second to help you better understand your punch metrics.

It detects the number, the type, and the velocity of all your punches. The tracker itself is discreet, durable and comfortable. It’s also sweatproof. No other tracker on the market is as accurate for hand speed and punch tracking. The Hysko tracker connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth and displays data through an intuitive app.

Best smartwatch for yoga: Apple Watch Series 5

The Apple Watch Series 5 is one of the best all-round smartwatches in the world. It does everything well. If you take yoga classes or enjoy a spot of yoga at the gym by yourself, we recommend the Apple Watch Series 5 with the Pocket Yoga app. You can choose between different practices, sessions and difficulty levels on the fly.

The Pocket Yoga app is great for beginners and advanced users alike. A comprehensive pose dictionary is included so you can familiarise yourself with the terminology. It’s a match made in heaven for the Apple Watch Series 5 because of its accurate heart rate tracking feature. GPS and an altimeter also feature for accurate activity tracking.

Cyclists can also pair the Forerunner 645 with ANT+ and Bluetooth bike accessories from power meters to Garmin smart lights.

The 645 provides accurate GPS tracking of your runs and cycles, and crunches a lot of data based on your cardiovascular efforts in all forms of exercise. This means it can suggest recovery times, make a decent stab at estimating your VO2 Max, tell you how optimal your training load and lots, lots more. As a result, the app that shows you all this does sprawl somewhat, but you get used to it eventually.

The 645 also counts your steps and stairs climbed, like a fitness band, and more usefully, counts and lets you set targets for your ‘intensity minutes’ – the amount of time spent doing something more exerting than walking to the shops. The Garmin 645 is sufficiently attractive that you’re able to wear it all the time, so this works really well. The battery life (‘7 days general use; 5 hours in GPS mode’, which equates to about 4 days of use if you’re working out regularly) is more than adequate, though less than some bulkier Garmin watches. It charges quickly, too.

There are also notifications from your preferred messaging services.

Overall, this is narrowly the best Garmin running watch and therefore the best running watch. The only caveat I’d add to that is the shorter battery life may drive some users nuts, so they might be better served with a Forerunner 235 or 935.

• You can also get the Garmin 645 Music. Here, the smartwatch features also include, as the name suggests, a music player – so you can leave your phone behind on runs and still use your Power Playlist. This involves either copying MP3s onto the device – how old skool – or, since a recent firmware update, offlining Spotify playlists.

The Garmin Forerunner 245 Music is the ultimate smartphone-free GPS running watch for the price conscious runner. Other multi-sport smartwatches, like the Garmin Fenix 6 Pro or the Polar Vantage V, might provide more metrics, but for the low price point, the Garmin Forerunner 245 Music is more than capable device.

The GPS+GLONASS+Galileo positioning system is quick and accurate, tracking your movement outdoors with high precision. The battery can last up to seven days in smartwatch mode and six hours in GPS mode with music, meaning that you won’t have to charge it more than three times in two weeks.

The Garmin Forerunner 245 Music also supports Garmin Coach, an adaptive training guide that can train you up to run a certain distance (5k, 10k or half marathon) within a certain time limit, set by you. The plan adapts to your training load and progression and adjusts it accordingly.

You can check your progress and pore over data from previous activities using the Garmin Connect app. In the app, you can also collect badges for a range of activities, a fun way to stay motivated!

The Garmin Forerunner 245 Music is a bit on the light side, though, which is of course great if you use it for running, but you also won’t get the sense that you have something substantial wrapped around your wrist.

The Polar Ignite is a great fitness watch geared towards runners and cyclists alike. It can also give you valuable insight on a range of other activities and even on your sleep.

Thanks to the built-in GPS, there is no need to carry around the phone with you when you go out for a run to be able to track your course. Recording an exercise is as easy as pressing the button on the side and tapping on the icon of the desired activity, doesn’t take you more than two seconds.

The Ignite has a continuous heart-rate monitoring function as well. Granted, this isn’t the most precise tracker, but none of the wrist-based HR trackers are precise enough to replace your GP, really.

The metrics monitored by the Polar Ignite are more than enough for most serious amateurs, people this fitness watch was designed for. Not only it gives you stats after the exercise has been finished on the watch face, once synchronised with the Polar Flow app, you can analyse your training in even more depth.

You can also track your sleeps with the Polar Ignite. The only issue is – and this is something all fitness trackers have in common – is that wearing a tracker ‘snugly’ is not comfortable on the long run.

For this price, though, the Polar Ignite is well the investment. Coupled up the with Polar Flow app and the adaptive recommendation system, it can help you immensely to improve your fitness levels.

4. Garmin Fenix 6 Pro Titanium (47 mm case)

The Garmin Fenix 6 Pro is a great smartwatch for anyone who loves the Great Outdoors and it is especially good for triathletes and trail runners. The Fenix 6 has a multisport mode which makes switching between sport modes as easy as pressing a button.

Garmin managed to improve on the formula that made the Fenix 5 Plus so great, further enhancing the battery life and also tweaking the user interface, which is now way easier to glance over, thanks to the widget view.

If anything, the Fenix 6 Pro is more rugged than light, but it is far from being too heavy. The Titanium version is also 11 grams lighter than the steel version, making it on par with other smartwatches on this list.

The Garmin Fenix 6 Series is not flawless, though. The Fenix 6 models not only retail for more than many of the watches on this list, but it is also very over-specced: it feels more like a demonstration from Garmin of what their technology is capable of than a good set of features runners might appreciate. It’s doubtful, for example, that many people will want to use the Garmin Fenix 6 for points-of-interest navigation in urban areas, although the watch is capable of doing just that.

Nevertheless, if you can justify the price – and weight – of the Garmin Fenix 6 Pro, you should definitely get one because it just feels great on the wrist and really represents what fitness smartwatches are capable of.

5. Garmin Forerunner 935

Great for triathletes

Built for triathletes, the Forerunner 935 is in many ways the ultimate fitness device to date.

Pair it with Garmin’s land and water heart-rate straps and you will learn more about your running and swimming than you ever thought possible.

Add its range of bike power meters and sundry other high-end two-wheel accoutrements and you have an incredibly powerful bike computer on your wrist.

And then you’ll realise you’ve spent well on the way to a grand.

If you want to know your lactate threshold, VO2 Max, stress levels and (via the optional extras) cadence, stride length, ground contact time, oscillation and a whole lot more, look no further.

It’s disappointing that even at this price, if you insist on sweating, the wrist HR is not really up to it. Access to so many metrics also makes you realise what a damnable mess Garmin’s Connect app is.

However, for the hardcore, triathletes and iron persons, or runners and gym goers with money to burn, this is the best of the best.

The only reason it’s not at the top of this list is that for most runners and those who are generally serious about their exercise, but aren’t triathletes, the Forerunner 630, paired with a chest strap, will be just as useful.

6. Suunto 9 Baro

Best running watch for long distances and off-road

The Suunto 9 Baro is pretty much identical to the Suunto 9, apart from two key factors: the Baro has a barometer – as the name suggests – and also comes with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass at the front. For these two features, you will need to pay around 20% premium, but it’ll be worth it.

The Suunto 9 Baro’s extra features will be appreciated most by trail runners who scale mountains and would like to keep track of the altitude gain/loss of their runs. Even better for them, the Suunto 9 Baro features a storm alarm, so you can find shelter in time, or just skip outdoor training, as you wish.

The extra features offered by the Suunto 9 Baro don’t compromise the excellent battery life, another bonus for people who not only like running in mountains, but also also do it for long periods of time each time. We understand that we are talking about a niche market here, but for those, the Suunto 9 Baro is heaven sent.

7. Polar Vantage V

The Polar Vantage V is a peculiar flagship smartwatch. First of all, it most usually retails for less than the likes of Garmin Forerunner 945 or the Suunto 9 Baro which can be a big plus to many people out there. It also has some very unique features which might arouse some runners out there, especially the running power metric, measured on the wrist.

It also looks a bit more like a fashion watch as opposed to a multi-sport smartwatch. As default, the strap colours you can choose from aren’t black and even more black, but bright orange, vibrant blue and white. Polar doesn’t want you to blend in. They want their watches to stand out and be seen.

There is a lot to love on the Polar Vantage V. It has a large touchscreen display, hidden under Gorilla Glass lens and no less than nine sensors on the back. It uses a GPS+GLONASS tracking system, which doesn’t pick the signal up as fast as the Garmin Fenix 6 Pro, for example, but it does the job just fine.

The battery will last long enough, too, it has enough juice in there for 40 hours of tracking, so considering average use, you will be able to go between two charges for a good week.

And of course, the Polar Vantage V has all the fitness tracking features you’ll ever need, and more, like sleep stage tracking, Nightly Recharge (which shows you how your body was able to recover from stress or training), Serene (guided breathing exercise), steps and activity tracking.

Since it is a Polar watch, the Polar Vantage V focuses a lot on recovery, too, with features like Training Load Pro, which measures cardio, muscle and perceived load, all on the wrist and without any external straps or pods needed. All this for not a lot of money.

8. Fitbit Ionic

Best Fitbit for the gym and running

With the ability to store more than 300 songs and to detect crunches and other gym workouts, as well as having built-in GPS and pulse tracking, this is the most complete fitness watch Fitbit has ever produced.

The design is clean and simple, even if it’s not the most attractive. The Ionic comes in three different colours: charcoal and smoke gray, slate blue and burnt orange, and blue gray and silver. It comes with both smaller and larger wrist bands, which is a handy feature that not all brands think of. The bands are extremely easy to switch, and you can subsequently purchase sporty bands in various colours, or smarter leather ones.

The Ionic’s heart rate monitor is a bit peculiar. It seems very accurate once you’re into more intense activity, but very inaccurate at lower levels, when exercising. The issue with this is that some people like to exercise in the more relaxed, so-called ‘fat burning’ zone. I’m not sure they’ll get anywhere with the Ionic, because it is less accurate at that kind of level. For tracking resting/average heart-rate and workouts in the higher cardio/threshold/intense zones the Ionic is good. It’s just the area in between where it seems to go haywire.

I still prefer chest straps because I want to be sure about my data, but there’s no denying wrist heart-rate is a more comfortable and convenient system. However a further failing of the Ionic (and all Fitbits) is that although it shows your heart rate when you workout, it doesn’t show what zone you’re in, so you have to remember where each one begins or ends. I have no idea why that is, I find it bizarre.

Fitbit claims 4+ days of battery, although as with every watch on the market, the more you use it on a regular basis, the less time the battery will last. For a running watch that is not bad and for a smartwatch, it’s great.

Being a Fitbit, the Ionic also tracks your steps, distance covered, calories burned in one day and how well you’ve slept. It also tracks how many flights of stairs you’ve walked up, and reminds you to move when you been sitting for too long. This feature is a bit peculiar as it also tracks your movements outdoors. So if you walk or cycle up a hill, that will be logged as climbing stairs. It’s handy if you want to know how many flights of stairs a hill is equivalent to.

The Ionic also has personalised coaching workouts that guide you through specific exercises. This could one day be useful, but if you spend too much time looking at the screen of your watch, you won’t execute the drill properly.

These kind of ‘futuristic’ features are cool and great and all, but they need to be used with wisdom. The Fitbit’s ‘guided breathing’ app, to enhance relaxation, is another example.

This is being marketed specifically as a smartwatch for exercise, rather than an exercise watch with some smart features bolted on. As such there’s an app store, which is currently under-populated (Philips Hue, Strava… not much else and nothing essential). The smart notifications are better, and work across phone, text and Whatsapp. The ability to make contactless payments from the watch is cool in theory but having to type a PIN on the Ionic’s touchscreen at least once per day to access it is less cool.

The Ionic is water resistant up to 50 meters and will have a go at tracking lengths, distance and time. No wrist heart-rate trackers can work underwater, and the Ionic is no exception.

Finally, to train better and become stronger (or faster), you need rest and recovery. The Fitbit Ionic monitors not just your hours of sleep but also the quality, according to your heart rate activity and your night movements. It then breaks your night down into deep, light and REM sleep, which is pretty advanced.

Personally, wearing a watch all night to track of my sleep quality will actually negatively influence it. I can’t really tolerate a watch at night. But maybe that’s just me.

9. Suunto 5

The Suunto 9 Baro’s little sibling with intelligent battery modes

Considerably cheaper than the Suunto 9 Baro, the Suunto 5 still has many of the features of its older and bigger sibling, including the intelligent battery management system and 24/7 heart-rate tracking.

The compact form factor is ideal for people with smaller wrist circumference although it does mean that the screen is also smaller than the 9 Baro. This wouldn’t be an issue in itself, but unfortunately the Suunto 5 sometimes wants to display the same amount of info as watches with much larger screens, which makes it rally challenging to read during running workouts, for example.

The Suunto 5 has loads of useful features, including the adaptive training guide, which – as the name suggests – adapts to your training intensity and recommends workouts based on your performance.

One feature that elevates the Suunto 9 Baro above the rest of the competition is the extremely long battery life, something the Suunto 5 inherited too. The Suunto 5 will not only has different battery saving options to choose from, it also prompts you if it needs charging and if it thinks you will run out of juice soon.

With over 80 different sport modes to choose from, you can rest assured the Suunto 5 will be able to track your chosen sport principle accurately.

Made by the same team as the Push Band – the wearable aimed at professional athletes and sports teams to assist weightlifting – the Nexus compression sleeve instead looks to add science to CrossFit workouts.

Landing in October, the wearable sits inside the sleeve and provides automatic exercise detection, repetition counting, round-by-round splits, cadence, a work-to-rest ratio figure and even a power metric that calculates intensity into a raw figure.

It knows if you’re doing push-ups or bicep curls, and can even learn new exercises by analysing your motion. It’ll count your reps, measure your heart rate and also grade the form of each set.

With its second generation device, Atlas upped the memory, expanded the exercise library database and now lets you store more exercises to work out with. You can now also take it for a swim.

When we first sampled the wearable in our Atlas Wristband review, we enjoyed the smarts but had some reservations about the design. The same was true when revisited through a strength training diary, though what’s impressive about the Wristband is that it’s still a superior option to most despite its age. Thankfully, a slimmer option in the shape of the well, Shape has now started shipping.

Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro

The Gear Fit2 Pro is an upgrade on the original Samsung fitness tracker, but not a huge one. You still have built-in GPS, an onboard music player and offline Spotify, an optical heart rate monitor and notifications from your smartphone, but the most notable difference is waterproofing.

For those looking at the device as a prospective gym partner, you also get an Automated Dynamic Workout Tracking mode to automatically recognise exercises, as well as rep counting to keep tabs on the likes of crunches, lunges, squats and star jumps.

Thanks to these features and that gorgeous curved super AMOLED display, Samsung’s Fit2 Pro is a solid all-round performer. However, it’s worth bearing in mind that the previous generation is still available and can offer a similar tracking experience for the gym.

Garmin recently introduced strength training features to a host of its wearables and it even made it onto the Garmin Vivosport. But the small screen on the feature-packed fitness tracker is not the most ideal for making use of the new mode, so we’d suggest going for one of the watches that include it like the Forerunner 935.

It’s essentially the Fenix 5 packed into a smaller body and as far as strength training, it will count reps for a series of bodyweight exercises as well as weights machines that will have to of course involve your arms. You can edit rep counts, set timers and breaks in between sets when you need to take a breather.

The Lumo Run is one of our favourite wearables we’ve taken out running and was highly commended at the Wareable Tech Awards in our Speciality Sports Wearable of the Year category.

Why did we like it so much? Well, it’s because the sensor that clips onto the back of your running kits serves up real-time coaching and tracks key metrics like cadence, bounce, braking, drop and rotation.

While it’s best used outdoors where it can piggyback off your phone’s GPS to map out your session, it does still provide useful data and real-time coaching on the treadmill as well. Just make sure you turn off auto pause in the app settings to ensure the app doesn’t think you are just stationary.

While there are plenty of Bluetooth headphones out there that will let you tap into smart metrics during exercise, crowdfunding success Vi, from LifeBEAM, is one of the first to hone in on AI coaching.

After initially only being able to provide you support for the outdoors, LifeBEAM recently added the ability for Vi to be used on the treadmill. Much like the standard outdoor mode, it’ll take advantage of the onboard heart rate sensor and track steps and cadence to offer personalised coaching in real time.


This is a hearable primarily aimed at beginner and intermediate runners, so don’t expect any wild marathon training coaching here, but this is still a very solid choice for anybody wanting to block out the eardrum-popping gym music and get insights from the same device.

The Moov Now is a Wareable favourite, giving you the option to track and receive coaching in a number of sports and exercises at a high level of consistency.

We love it for running and swimming, but it’s also great for indoor cycling. Especially if you have the Moov Sweat HR headband to combine it with as well.

Once you’ve placed the sensor around your ankle like you do for run tracking, it can be used for HIIT cycling where it will tell you to increase cadence or intensity to be able to comfortably get up to the next target interval zone.

It can be paired with a cadence or speed sensor to record indoor biking data alongside your heart rate data. The screen is nice and big, and the UI means you can quickly get a good sense if you’re hitting the right zones.

There’s also a built-in music player on board so you can grab some Bluetooth headphones and leave the phone in your gym locker.

Use the app to select a workout and it will show you where to place the sensor (you can even use two as a duo sensor for simultaneous upper and lower body training). As you complete you exercise routine–whether its weight lifting or fitness machines–the app analyzes your movements and gives you live feedback via headphones or screen display. This helps you improve your form and increase the efficiency of your workout. The GYMWATCH and app work like your own personal trainer while tracking your progress automatically.

        When you’re done with your workout (or even between activities), you can analyze and evaluate your workout. In addition to the usual calories burned data regular fitness trackers give you, the GYMWATCH has tons of data specifically for weight lifting, including moving barrels, range of motion, and time under tension. Because of the portability of the tracker, you can get in your strength training anywhere: at the gym, at home, in the park.

        Though it has “watch” in the name, the tracker is just a sensor–it has no display and doesn’t show the time. You have to use your smartphone and the app to get the full effect of the coaching and tracking. They also have a web portal you can use to really analyze your stats on your computer at home. It also doesn’t do any of the regular activity tracker functions like tracking steps. The focus is really on gym workouts or body weight strength training.         Atlas Wearables Fitness Wristband

        If the GYMWATCH is out of your budget, the Atlas wristband is a cheaper option to consider. Designed with a variety of workouts in mind, the Atlas wristband is perfect for weight lifting, strength training, and other fitness activities. It features their trademarked Adaptive Motion Tracking that automatically logs exercises, counts reps, and analyzes your form. Again, this is like having a fitness coach on your wrist.

        The wristband automatically identifies the exercise and records reps and other workout data to give you all the stats when you finish. Since it uses your smartphone app to track and analyze the data, this wristband is always updating and adding new supported workout types. Currently, it can track over 100 standard exercises, including weight lifting with barbells, dumbbells, and kettlebells. It also tracks other exercises and aerobics like Crossfit, HIIT, and even swimming. If you’re doing push ups or jumping jacks, the Atlas senses it and records appropriately. If you need guidance for your gym time, the app has workouts designed to focus on a variety of fitness goals like slimming down or even adding bulk and it will guide you through the exercises on the wristband’s touchscreen. Or you can go freestyle and the app will track whatever you do.

        Now, the Atlas is not an all day wearable. The large screen on the band looks a little out of place for everyday life–like it’s something from a vintage sci-fi movie. If you’re looking for all day step counter or heart rate monitor, you’ll have to look elsewhere. But for monitoring and coaching while you workout, the Atlas is a good choice.

        Push Band

        Similar to the Gymwatch, the Push Band is an arm band that will track all of your gym activity. While it won’t count your steps, the push band is recommended for coachs to train their athletes remotely, so you know it’s good for tracking your gym time. The band tracks over 250 exercises, include a variety of weight lifting activities.

        Just put the band on your forearm and use the app to select your activities. The app provides real-time feedback using Velocity Based Training (VBT) and you can use the Portal website to track your progress over time.

          But it’s not just a pretty face, underneath its stylish exterior you’ll find plenty of solid fitness tracking features and a battery that’ll last up to a week on a single charge.

          Steps, calories, heart rate, sleep – including how long you spend in the different sleep states such as light, deep and REM – automatic activity tracking and smartphone notifications allow you to track your entire day.

          And there’s no slacking off. Fitbit’s app, for iOS and Android, lets you set personal goals and the band sets you mini-goals such as 250 steps an hour, along with timely reminders to get up and be active when you’ve not moved for a while, something studies have shown is beneficial for overall health.

          Fitbit’s app is full of features and workouts/sports to choose from yet still manages to be beginner-friendly. The Alta HR does everything you (probably) want from a fitness tracker and does it very well.

          Also consider: The Alta HR is being replaced by the Inspire HR (£90). It’s swimproof, light and does the basics well but while the Alta HR is available, this should be your go to.

          A hugely versatile running watch with detailed feedback

          When it comes to running, there’s a ton of choice out there. Nearly all watches come equipped with GPS tracking nowadays, which allows you to see accurate distance, speed and pace and a whole lot more during the activity. However, GPS alone doesn’t make a high-quality watch.

          The Garmin Forerunner 935 (£390) stands out as it will do everything you can think of and a whole lot more. The device might be expensive but it packs in pretty much every feature possible. In terms of sensors, there’s a barometric altimeter, compass, gyroscope, accelerometer and thermometer. When the watch’s smarts combine the data collected from these sensors it’s possible to analyse your runs to a fine level of detail.

          As well as running-specific features the Forerunner 935 is able to count daily steps, floors climbed and sleep monitoring. It can track indoor rowing, strength training, cardio training and automatically figures out how many reps you’ve done. There are advanced modes for cycling, golf and swimming.

          Alongside all those features, what makes the Garmin device really standout is its battery life. It can last up to 24 hours in GPS tracking mode and two weeks in a normal watch mode. This makes it ideal for all sorts of workouts, including long distance events. It’s comfy to wear but comes at a cost and may get a little grubby with daily wear.

          Most manufacturers shoot for our wrists, but fitness tracking doesn’t have to be done there. If you’re someone who is primarily interested in what happens when you start and stop a serious training session, then the Jabra Elite Sport (£150) with built-in heart rate monitoring are well worth consideration as an alternative to the watch and band regulars.

          A training partner in a set of headphones, when paired with the partner Jabra Sport Life app for iOS and Android, the Elite Sport use your smartphone’s GPS to power real-time audio feedback on your training, with voice cues for stats such as ​average pulse, speed, distance and cadence.

          Of course, if you’re going to use earbuds as a fitness tool, they need to be comfortable, and although these are ​bulkier than some true wireless buds, they come with a selection of anchoring wing tips and gels that create a snug, unshakeable fit that won’t budge even during high-intensity fitness activities.

          The heart-rate monitor performs well against a chest strap, and the app also has sport-specific training plans, but these are a bit limited.​ ​They’re IP67 rated to fend off salty sweat and annoying rain, and you’ll get four-and-a-half hours of run time on a single charge, plus a nine-hour boost from the protective charging case.

          Apple Watch Series 4

          The ultimate smartwatch has extensive fitness features


          The Apple Watch Series 4 (£399) allows you to leave the phone at home (if you opt for the LTE cellular version) and still make and answer calls, ask Siri questions, get smartphone notifications and stream tracks from Apple Music, but it’s the fitness features we’re interested in, and it’s pretty much got everything you need.

          With built-in GPS, an altimeter and an upgraded fall-detecting accelerometer and gyroscope setup, you can track distance on runs, hikes and cycles and also see elevation, as well as monitoring stairs climbed throughout the day, also without your phone, something that keeps it ahead of similar rivals.

          It’s swim-proof for both indoor and outdoor swims, and cleverly pairs with compatible gym equipment to ensure your indoor cardio workout stats are in sync. New for Series 4 is both an optical heart-rate sensor and an additional electrical sensor – that means faster readings, low heart-rate alerts and even ECG readings (now live the UK and Europe).

          There’s motivation to keep moving, too, thanks to the three Apple Watch activity rings – move, exercise and stand. These show how active you are throughout the day, send prompts to get you off the sofa and give rewards you with a little animation every time you close the rings, get a new personal best or achieve a milestone. One niggle: auto detection for walking only kicks in after 15 minutes.

          One of the great updates in Series 4 is that the smartwatch features activity metrics and workouts for wheelchair users, making it one of the best mainstream trackers for those with mobility issues. The only wellness feature which is missing is native sleep tracking, though you can easily download a third-party sleep app. One note – we’re expecting an Apple Watch Series 5, running watchOS 6, to be launched in September.

          Swimproof, seven day battery and heart rate monitoring


          If you’re not wanting to carry the bulk (or pay the price) for a full-size smartwatch, the Fitbit Charge 3 (£119) is a good way to ensure you’re staying active. It’s a compact and unobtrusive fitness tracker that packs in some pretty nifty features considering its size, such as step-tracking and then some other extras that might come in useful, like calorie counting and heart-rate monitoring.

          Otherwise the main features include a light, comfortable design, larger display, and for the first time in a Charge device: waterproofing, meaning it can be used to track swimming (although that’s only for in a pool and not open water). One downside, however, is that while it can track your run using GPS, this isn’t done onboard, so you’ll have to carry your phone around with you if you’re wanting to track where you’ve been.

          While the specs don’t meet those of that seen on Fitbit’s smartwatch offerings, namely the Versa or Ionic, the screen does its job at being able to display information clearly despite its small size, and even in bright environments. This is thanks to its monochrome screen, which while isn’t as exciting to look at as some full-colour rivals, it does ensure battery life is kept to a minimum. Speaking of which, you’ll find the Charge 3 lasts for just under a week with normal use. While that’s not the most we’ve seen cited for a fitness tracker, it’s still decent enough to mean you’re not constantly having to plug it in to keep it going.

          As for the Fitbit App platform the Charge 3 uses to store all your data, it’s one of our favourites out there. It’s simple to understand and easy to navigate, making it a faster and slicker experience than competing apps like Withings Health Mate. Overall, the Charge 3 offers great, all-round features for the price.

          A waterproof touchscreen tracker that you can wear in the shower, pool and when you sleep, this slim Garmin Vivosmart 3 (£55) band automatically monitors your activity, so it knows not just how many steps you’ve taken, but when you’re swimming, running or training without you having to tell it.

          It even uses the in-built heart-rate monitor to give you a stress rating (show that to your boss when they pile on more work).

          Where it really comes into its own though is in the gym. If you want to keep track of your strength workouts, the Vivosmart has a special strength training function to count reps, sets, exercises, work and rest times and you can rifle through the data in much greater detail on the increasingly capable Garmin Connect app.

          We also found the VO2 max estimate useful. Put simply, VO2 max is a measure of how effective your body is at getting oxygen to your muscles during exercise, a good indicator of aerobic fitness.

          Garmin uses this data to give you an estimated fitness age, which it’s nice to see get lower as you get fitter. Hopefully. While it’s not as accurate as a lab-grad VO2 max test, this ability to turn back the ageing clock is good motivation to move more.

          Also consider: The upgraded Vivosmart 4, adds a Pulse Ox sensor to measure blood oxygen levels, for £20 extra.

          The boxing tracker that measures punch counts and power

          Whether you spend time in the ring or use boxing or MMA for fitness, Hykso (from £150) is one of only a handful of boxing trackers designed to help both pro and amateur fighters train smarter not harder.

          Co-founded by US boxer Tommy Duquette, Hykso comes in the form of two small sweat-proof trackers that fit inside your wraps. With a barely-know-it’s-there feel, when you train they send real-time data to an app on your phone including punch rate, speed, punch type – defined as left and right straight (jabs and crosses) and left and right power (hooks and uppercuts) – and intensity.

          You can compare this data to other fighters to see where you stand and identify your strengths and weaknesses, as well as logging your regular drills to see how you’re improving.

          Unlike old-school punch counters you may have seen in the boxing gym, Hykso won’t count arm movements from skipping, battle ropes, jacks and blocks as punches, so the data is about as accurate as you can get. It’s not cheap but if you’re after serious stats, these things pack a punch.

          Moov Now

          Brilliant tracking for multiple disciplines, including swimming

          When it comes to waterproof fitness trackers for swimming, you’re usually looking at a pretty high price point, but the affordable Moov Now (£55) offers swim tracking alongside audio coaching and cadence monitoring on the run, rep counting for online workouts and cardio boxing and cycling data, so there’s no need to splash out.

          Wear it in the pool and it automatically tracks your laps, time, distance, pace and stroke with all the data synced to your phone so you can analyse how you’re improving and check out your time per lap.

          The Moov app, for iOS and Android, also provides handy pro tips after your workout, suggesting areas to work on when you next hit the pool.

          The main issue compared to more expensive trackers, though, is that the data isn’t visible on your wrist, only in the smartphone app. As it’s unlikely you’ll want to leave your phone poolside, you’ll have to wait till you’re back in the changing rooms to see how you did, but if this is your first foray into swim tracking it’s a bargain way to do it.

          How to choose the best fitness tracker for you

          Fitness trackers have to do a lot of work to justify their very existence these days. We’d suggest starting with the main activity or workout you want to track and checking each tracker or smartwatch has the sensors and features you need.

          For running, you’ll probably want built-in GPS unless you’re a casual or beginner runner. For swimmers, waterproofing will be key. If you spend most of your time at the gym or in classes, you’ll need a tracker that supports lots of workouts.

          Once the core features are ticked off, you can have some fun digging into the more advanced health and fitness sensors that track metrics such as VO2 max and blood-oxygen levels. These make sense for intermediate runners, competing in races and looking to maximise PBs and recovery times. You might benefit from a device you can grow into, though, and make use of extra features as you spend more time with it.

          Your next choice is how important real-time feedback is and how large a screen you’d like. If you want a big screen, you’ll have to pay more for a watch, but if you’re happy for a small, monochrome display (or no screen at all) you’re more likely to find something on the budget end. This also impacts on battery life with a range from one day to one or two weeks with limited, daily use available.

          Ever glanced at your fitness tracker while weightlifting and wondered why it was completely off? Your device may be fantastic for tracking heart rate and cardio, but a common weakness found across wearables is the ability to detect strength-training exercises. That’s because Fitbit’s PurePulse technology and Apple’s similar heart sensor technology use LED lights to detect the amount of blood flow in your wrist. This provides real-time data on your heart rate and calories burned, but they’re much more suited for tracking rhythmic movements like dance cardio or running. The good news is that there are tips and tricks to better optimize your device’s settings to make sure your workouts are accounted for.

          Fitbit Tips

          • Customize your exercise shortcuts on the Fitbit app to include “Weights” as one of the Exercise options on your Fitbit Blaze, Fitbit Charge 2, Fitbit Ionic, or Fitbit Versa. According to Fitbit, this will provide you with more precise heart rate tracking, capturing it every one second versus every five seconds.
          • You can also manually log the duration of your strength-training workout directly in the app.
          • Fitbit also offers a built-in interval timer that you can customize to fit your workout. It vibrates and lights up to indicate when it’s time to move or rest.

          Apple Watch Tips

          • Select the “Other” workout option on your Apple Watch and label it as “Strength Training” at the end of your workout. It will provide you with time, heart rate, and calories for that specific session.
          • When you’re holding a plank, for instance, the “Other” workout will still credit you the calorie equivalent of a brisk walk, while also counting toward your all-day Activity.

          If you’re in a mixed-format class like Barry’s Bootcamp, where you switch from the treadmill to floor, you can also manually switch between exercise modes. It may not give you a comprehensive look at your entire workout, but you can at least get more accurate snapshots of individual exercises for measuring purposes.

          Despite the challenges that smart watches and fitness trackers have, San Francisco-based trainer Austin Lopez encourages all of his clients, especially his remote ones, to wear a Fitbit. At the end of each week, he has everyone send in their weekly reports for accountability and progress.


          “In terms of goals, it comes down to consistency,” Lopez told POPSUGAR. “The wearables help maintain consistency by notifying you of daily activity levels being reached, workout goal progress, and other healthy habits. As a trainer, it is helpful because I don’t have to send hundreds of reminders a day, rather, I check in with my clients’ overall lifestyle in a week’s time.”

          When using his personal Fitbit during workouts, Austin shoots for a certain number of burned calories per session. Regardless of whether or not that number is accurate, setting a benchmark can help him gauge how hard he worked. You can do the same by giving your next workout everything you’ve got to see the maximum amount of calories you can burn on your tracker. Then, compare your future workouts to that data for a better look at your progress.

          Overall, get familiar with your device and figure out all the ways you can tailor it to you. Its default settings may be great to start off with, but you can manipulate your Apple Watch or Fitbit past the main screen to truly use it to its fullest potential. Keep in mind that although they may not be the most accurate at all times, they’re fantastic for tracking your personal activity and progress, and there’s value in that alone.
