With St. Patrick’s Day upon us, you may have green beer on the brain. But instead of just drinking your usual favorite American light beer with a few drops of festive green food coloring, why not expand your beer horizons and go totally Irish to celebrate?

These seven Irish beers don’t have as many calories as you’d think and because they’re more full-bodied than light beers, you’re less likely to drink as much, thereby keeping your portion sizes and total calories down. Erin go brew!

7 Irish Beers for St. Patrick’s Day

1. Guinness Draught. Twelve ounces of this dark and rich beers has just 125 calories! Makes us want to do an Irish jig!

2. Harp. With a few more calories than its Black and Tan partner Guinness, one of these come in at 142 calories for 12 ounces.

3. Killian’s Irish Red. St. Patrick’s Day and Irish reds go hand in hand. This popular beer has 163 calories in a 12-ounce bottle.

4. Murphy’s. Another Irish stout, Murphy’s has 171 calories but tons of flavor for 12 ounces of St. Paddy sipping!

5. Beamish Irish Cream Stout. Don’t let the word “cream” fool you. Twelve ounces of Beamish has just 146 calories, making it slightly heavier than Guinness.

6. Smithwick’s Irish Ale. If you aren’t a fan of the darker beers, try 12 ounces of this Irish ale that clocks in at a reasonable 150 calories.

7. Irish Car Bomb. OK, so this is more of a shot/beer-cocktail than an actual beer, but 12 ounces of this Guinness-Bailey’s-Jameson concoction is by far the most caloric option of all with 237 calories, so bomb in serious moderation.

1. Guinness Draught

Even hearty Guinness Draught is a slimmer pick than your standard wheat variety, with 126 calories and 10 grams of carbs. And think about it this way: “Slashing 40 calories each time you fill your mug might not sound like a lot, but over time, these small changes help people achieve their weight-loss goals.” Meaning you can have your beer and lose weight, too.

Work / Day Activity Level

Light – Have a job that involves long periods of sitting (office-based / driving) or are home-based and sitting for much of the day. Typical jobs: office worker, sales rep, bus/taxi/lorry driver.

Would it surprise you to know Coors light and Heineken have exactly the same calories and carbs? Shown here is the sugar and calorie content in popular beers, stout and ciders. If like me, you like to drink alcohol you’ll be interested to see the results I found.

All beers, stouts and ciders were unfortunately high in calories & some were also high in carbs too. A pint of beer has between 210 & 240kcals, similar to a mars bar (244kcals).

I’m not here to talk about the rights and wrongs or damage alcohol causes, you’re an adult and that’s for you to decide. I’m just hoping to help people make more informed choices about what they drink and in what quantity. Like most things in moderation, they are ok for most people. However, for someone wishing to lose weight it would decrease your chances of losing weight, if you choose to drink any beer, stout or cider to excess. For example:

  • 6 bottles of Heineken have 714 calories & 54g of carbs (18x 3g sugar sachets you’ll know from coffee shops).
  • 6 pints of Budweiser has 1398 kcals & 102g of sugar (34 sugar sachets).
  • 10 pints of Bulmers cider is 2100 kcals & 230g of sugar (77 sugar sachets).

Workout what you’d have on a night out, then how much per week?

Light Beers

Its good to know that there are lower calorie and lower sugar alternatives available with Heineken Light, Bud Light and Bulmers Light now being widely available. They do make a significant difference. 6 bottles of Heineken is 714kcals but 6 bottles of Heineken Light is 438kcals. However light beers are usually heavily processed and most likely contain artificial sweeteners among other things. It was interesting to see regular Heineken and Coors Light have the exact same calories 119kcals per 330ml bottle.

In conclusion

It seems beer, cider and stouts are high calorie drinks and should be treated as occasional treats. Eight pints of Heineken has almost the same number of calories as 7 Mars bars or 8x 500ml bottles of Coke…

It’s worrying to think that governments place little or no importance on the labelling of alcohol, its ingredients or nutritional values but even a bottle of water has to have its contents detailed down to the macronutrient…
