Krispy Kreme Donuts Are Actually Healthier For You Than These 5 Treats

If you’re dieting or attempting a sugar-free diet, we doubt you’re reaching for a Krispy Kreme donut anytime soon. Still, the chain that boasts freshly baked and glazed donuts can be tempting for a once-in-a-while treat or cheat day.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends 25 grams of sugar or less daily for the average adult. If you eat two and a half Krispy Kremes, you’ve already exceeded this goal.

Health professionals found that many Americans eat nearly five times the recommended amount of sugar. Often times, this sugar hides in prepackaged foods that market themselves as healthy choices when they’re anything but. We uncovered five foods with more sugar than a Krispy Kreme diet … a few of which are actually considered “diet foods” among uneducated consumers.

Most Dunkin’ Donuts

Krispy Kreme is actually the lesser of the two evils when it comes to their donuts. Krispy Kreme’s donuts average between 200 and 300 calories, while Dunkin’s fall between 390 and 500 calories. Dunkin’ Donuts breakfast treats are also higher in sugar, fat, and sodium than Krispy Kreme’s donuts.

Take both brand’s glazed donut for example; Krispy Kreme’s has 190 calories, 10 grams of sugar, and 11 grams of fat. One glazed donut from Dunkin‘ will run you 260 calories, 12 grams of sugar, and 14 grams of fat.

Starbucks Coffee branded itself as a hip and healthy coffee chain with refreshing drinks and filling treats. While some of their food certainly breaks the calorie bank, it’s Starbucks’ drinks that pack all the hidden calories. A grande (medium-sized) latte packs 17 grams of sugar — and that’s not even counting if you add a flavored syrup to the mix.

Yogurt is a healthy breakfast food, admittedly far healthier than the donut or bagel you probably wish you bought. Some prepackaged yogurts are marketed as healthy grab-and-go options when they really pack tons of added sugar and calories.

Take Chobani for example. If you choose a full fat, organic, plain flavor then you’re on the right track … but most people opt for a flavored yogurt or one with fruit juice on the bottom. Chobani yogurts average 15 grams of sugar for a 5.3 oz container, 4 more grams of sugar than one glazed Krispy Kreme donut.

Odwalla Smoothies seem like easy, healthy grocery store grabs. In reality, these fruit smoothies are the source of tons of empty sugars and chemicals — not fruit. Odwalla nutrition labels reveal that smoothies like their Strawberry Banana juice have 260 calories and an alarming 47 grams of sugar compared to a Krispy Kreme donut’s 10 grams.

The ingredient list is concerning as well. While the smoothie claims to pack “12 strawberries, 2/3 a banana,” and various fruit juices, the label reveals what’s really inside: Strawberry purée from concentrate, apple and orange juices from concentrate, banana purée, less than 0.5% of: natural flavors, fruit and vegetable juice (for color), lemon juice concentrate (for tartness), vitamin c (ascorbic acid), vitamin e (d-alpha tocopherol acetate), beta carotene, pectin and gellan gum.

One of the first steps to losing weight is to stop drinking your calories. This means cutting out alcohol, soda, sports drinks, and high-calorie coffees. Brands like Vitamin Water market their drinks as healthy, revitalizing, and natural when oftentimes they pack a meal’s worth of calories and sugars.

One bottle of Vitamin Water’s “Essential” has 260 calories, 32 grams of sugar, and a long ingredient list packed with chemicals. We aren’t calling a Krispy Kreme donut the epitome of a healthy snack, but if you’re going to consume the calories, you may as well do it with a hot, fresh donut than a bottle of reverse osmosis water, crystalline fructose, cane sugar, and citric acid.

Dunkin Donuts Nutrition: Which Donuts Are Healthiest?

You might think that a doughnut is a doughnut, and that none of them are on the healthy end of the spectrum. While you certainly won’t find anyone claiming that doughnuts can be a health food, the offerings at Dunkin’ Donuts actually run the gamut from decidedly artery-clogging to decidedly low-cal. There are plenty of offerings that contain fewer than 300 calories, so if you’re hankering for a doughnut but don’t want to completely ruin your diet, here are the six healthiest (or least unhealthy) doughnuts from the Dunkin’ Donuts menu, according to calorie count.

4 Types of Doughnuts You Should Always Avoid

As you already know, eating doughnuts is not the healthiest choice for a snack, but even still some doughnuts are so full of fat and calories that eating one will take you a week to work off. Most all doughnuts are fried in some type of fat, but if you chose a small doughnut or a yeast (rather than cake) doughnut, you can limit the amount of damage you do to your diet. Above all, you should avoid these four doughnuts:

Boston Creme

The Boston Creme doughnut is a doughnut you should avoid mostly because of the chocolate frosting and creme filling. The cream filling is usually a custard or other creamy filling mostly made from whole milk and sugar. A Boston cream doughnut contains approximately 400 calories and 16 grams of fat. Over half of the fat in the Boston creme doughnut is from saturated fat.

Apple Fritter

Apple fritters are among the unhealthiest doughnuts. Just because a doughnut has fruit it it doesn’t mean it is a good choice. Apple fritters are deep fried in fat. A medium sized apple fritter contains approximately 17 grams of fat (almost half the fat from saturated fat) and 450 calories. Though apple fritters don’t have frosting, they do have a glaze which is primarily high fructose corn syrup.
Maple Bar

Another worst choice in doughnuts is the maple bar. The maple bar contains approximately 490 calories and 29 grams of fat. Nineteen grams of fat are from saturated fat. Maple bars can also contain filling, just like the Boston creme, which can up the caloric content to over 600 calories. Some doughnut vendors even top their maple bars with strips of bacon.

Bismark Doughnut

Bismark doughnuts contain 520 calories. Bismark doughnuts also contain approximately 21 grams of fat and 21 grams of sugar. This is almost half of the daily recommended amount of fat for an entire day. Bismark doughnuts are thick cake doughnuts (which is where most of their fat comes from) and they are often filled with sugary jam or jelly. Bismark doughnuts are also dipped in powdered sugar which also contributes to their high calorie content.
The next time you want to enjoy a doughnut, chose one with sprinkles instead of frosting. Better yet, get a plain yeast doughnut. If you must indulge in a doughnut with over 500 calories, try splitting the doughnut with a friend. Steer clear of doughnuts with a lot of frosting or a creme filling. The smaller doughnut you can get, the better. Many doughnut vendors have deals on doughnuts, saving you more money with the more doughnuts your buy. Try to resist these deals. Try doughnut holes as your best choice for doughnut cravings.

14 “Health” Foods Worse Than a Donut

Americans finally figured out that sugar is bad. How bad exactly? High consumption of sugary foods has been linked to health issues that range from obesity and type 2 diabetes to heart disease and stroke. And thanks to mounting consumer awareness, sales of the sugar industry’s golden child—soda—have declined so much over the past 11 years that 2016 will be the first year in recent history that the per-person consumption of “health-conscious” bottled water will surpass soft drink sales. (Which, for your reference, is 4 grams.)

These health halos usually cover up a bunch of junk in disguise, which can inevitably get in the way of even your most dedicated weight loss efforts. When grabbing a box off the shelf, be sure to steer clear of the three C’s: crunch, crisps, and clusters. This trio is typically code for clumps of rice held together by sugar and fat, like in these Honey (aka corn syrup and caramel color) Bunches of Oats.

Not only are the natural sugars more concentrated in dried fruits than fresh, but manufacturers will also often coat dried fruit in even more sugar. And that’s especially the case for these craisins, as cranberries have the lowest sugar content of all fruits, which Ocean Spray took as an open invitation to inject them with as much cane sugar as seven donuts.

Salad Dressing

They might be marketed as “light” and “fat-free,” but these salad dressings are loaded with salt and sugar to compensate for the lost flavor when companies cut out the fat. Both ketchup-based dressings—like French, Russian, and Thousand Island—as well as fruity vinaigrettes like pomegranate, raspberry, and even Ken’s sun-dried tomato, will typically include more added sugar than you might assume. Like, three donuts in only two tablespoons more than you’d assume.

Fruit Yogurt

Yes, some of the sugar in dairy yogurts is naturally-occurring in the form of lactose, but it’s the added sugar typical of fruit yogurts that you need to watch out for. While many fruit-on-the-bottom yogurts can attribute some of those extra sugars to real fruit pieces, Yoplait can’t make the same claim for this Peaches ‘n Cream flavor. The peach is just “natural flavor,” food coloring, and sugar.

Just because fruit is healthy doesn’t make fruit juice a waist-friendly pick. And labels that claim “made from real fruit” doesn’t mean much, other than the fact that at some point at least one slice of fruit came in contact with this concoction. This one from Langers is mostly filtered water, with some mango puree, citric acid, natural flavor, and lots and lots of sugar. Just because granola is usually paired with breakfast’s new golden child, yogurt, doesn’t mean it belongs in the picture of good health—especially this concoction. Granola is usually clumps of rolled oats stuck together with caramelized sugars, but Organic Gemini’s seems to be clumps of sugar disrupted by pieces of tiger nuts. Steer clear.

Especially since many ice creams are loaded with saturated fats. Unfortunately, the answer isn’t light ice cream—it’s eating moderate portions of the normal stuff. “Skinny” ice cream is loaded with inflammatory oils, sweeteners, and chemicals to give it taste without all the added calories.

Companies try to replicate the same sweet taste consumers love from simple-sugar-laden white breads by stuffing whole grain loaves with even more sweet stuff.

Organic gummy fruit snacks can be just as harmful to your health as “regular” brands of the sweet drops. For example, these Annie’s snacks’ first ingredient is organic tapioca syrup, then organic cane sugar, and then juice concentrates. If you’re craving something sweet, your best bet is to eat the real thing so you can get the satiating fiber and nutrients that come along with it.

Vitamin Waters are far from what they’re marketed as and should typically only be had if you’re a marathoner in need of replenishing carbs—not a person sipping on this pink beverage at their desk. Not only does this bottle serve up just as much sugar as a can of Coke, it also the sugar-equivalent of eight donuts. No amount of vitamins are worth that.

You Won’t Believe How Fattening the New Krispy Kreme Reese’s Donut Is

Food companies are always trying to up their game when it comes to creative food combos: Pop-Tarts and Jolly Ranchers, Oreos and Swedish Fish, Starbucks Frappuccino and red velvet cake. But Krispy Kreme just took the cake (literally) when it announced its latest decadent food mashup: a Reese’s peanut butter donut.

Krispy Kreme described the donut is “filled with a Reese’s Peanut Butter Kreme Filling, dipped in chocolate icing, and topped with a chocolate and peanut butter drizzle and Reese’s Mini Peanut Butter chips and peanuts.” It sounds more like a decadent dessert than a smart way to start your day; it’s certainly not one of our 37 Best Breakfast Foods for Weight Loss.

Sure, it sounds like a cheat treat. But just how much cheating are we talking? We checked the nutritionals to get the low-down on just how much belly-busting sugar and empty calories you’d be consuming. And trust us—it’s a lot.

Krispy Kreme Reese’s Donut: The Nutritionals

Just one Reese’s donut will set you back 400 calories, 24 grams of fat (9 grams saturated), 200 milligrams of sodium, 42 grams of carbs (2 grams of fiber, 21 grams of sugar), and 7 grams of protein. That’s nearly half of your saturated fat intake for the day. And not only is the nutrition info shocking, but the ingredients aren’t much better. It’s not just made with tons of sugar; the Reese’s donut includes palm oil, which raises your LDL (bad) cholesterol, mono and diglycerides, which are a form of trans fats, and inflammatory hydrogenated vegetable oils.

Compare that to a Krispy Kreme original glazed donut, which clocks in at 190 calories, 11 grams of fat (5 grams saturated), 85 milligrams of sodium, 22 grams of carbs (less than 1 gram of fiber, 10 grams of sugar), and 3 grams of protein. So if you’re hankering for a donut, you’d be better off eating an original glazed.

The Reese’s donut is available at Krispy Kreme’s starting on August 4 for a limited time only. So if you’re willing to make the splurge, make sure you get it while you can. And if you can limit yourself to just half a donut, even better. After all, having so many carbs and sugar first thing in the morning is one of the Worst Breakfast Habits for Your Waistline.

American Heart Association experts recommend men shouldn’t eat more than 36 grams of added sugar a day and women should limit their sugar consumption to 25 grams.

So a single Krispy Kreme doughnut, which has 10 grams of sugar, takes up a good bulk of your recommended daily intake.

But healthy-sounding snack replacements like yogurt and raisins actually rack up more sugar than you might think. And several options even have more than double the sugar of a Krispy Kreme original glazed doughnut.
