Carrie Underwood is perhaps best known for winning season four of American Idol and going on to become one of the most successful recording artists of all time (65 million records sold and 170 awards won . . . nbd). As the creator of the activewear line CALIA by Carrie Underwood, she is also known for her love of fitness.

Between recording multiplatinum albums and being a mom to 3-year-old Isaiah, Carrie still makes working out a priority. But Carrie didn’t get her toned legs and enviable abs with super complicated or intense workouts; in fact, her go-to exercises are so simple, anyone can do them.

“I do a lot of squats and lunges,” she told POPSUGAR at the CALIA by Carrie Underwood Mother’s Day event at (R)evolve in New York City. As part of the Mother’s Day campaign, CALIA is encouraging moms and daughters to get active together on Mother’s Day, whether that’s hitting up a boutique fitness class together or just going for a walk outside.


Now that the weather is warmer, Carrie says she enjoys doing cardio outside.

She even fits in a workout while she’s at the park with her son.

“Workouts can kind of happen anywhere,” she said. “We have a little park in our area where we live in, and it’s not anything super fancy, but it has monkey bars, and it has a step-up, and there’s a bench there. You’d be amazed at the things you can come up with.” She said while her son plays, she’ll do pull-ups on the monkey bars.

To fuel her workouts, Carrie eats a mostly plant-based diet. She’s been a vegetarian for about 14 years and tries to eat vegan — except when she’s around cheese.

“I want to be vegan all the time, but occasionally cheese gets me,” she said with a laugh. “If we’re at a great restaurant and they have good vegan food, of course I’m going to do that. I don’t eat a lot of cheese at home, but just occasionally. It’s my nemesis.”

Carrie Underwood showcased her sexy, sculpted legs in a LBD at the Spotify Hot Country Live concert in New York City on Wednesday, July 4, and her trainer tells Us Weekly how you can get toned legs just like the American Idol alum.

The country pop star is known for her dedication to hitting the gym — putting in 90-minute sessions up to six times a week — and it clearly pays off. “Carrie works out hard. Carrie is disciplined,” celebrity trainer Erin Oprea, who has worked with the Calia by Carrie Underwood activewear designer for 10 years, tells Us.

The Cry Pretty singer previously told Us that her famously lean legs are a priority in her fitness routine. “I like squats, lunges,” she revealed when she graced Us Weekly’s Best Bodies cover in 2016. “If I go for a jog and I meet up with a good hill, I will lunge up the hill and that will burn them out.”

Another way the mom of Isaiah, 3, with NHL center Mike Fisher stays in stellar shape is by focusing on total-body toning moves. “Carrie does weight training of all different variations — and lunges and squats,” says Oprea, who also trains singers Jana Kramer, Maren Morris, Kelsea Ballerini and Kasey Musgraves.

The pro says that she encourages all of her female clients, including Underwood, 35, to embrace lifting weights. “Don’t be scared of weights — weights make pretty muscles,” notes Oprea. Consider Underwood’s lean frame exhibit A. “We have days that have a lot of body weight training,” says the Nashville-based trainer. “Sometimes we’ll go heavier, then we’ll go down lighter. It’s back and forth.”

Underwood’s commitment to the gym didn’t waiver even after a freak fall late last year resulted in a broken wrist and 40-plus stitches to her face. “I had challenges and stuff like that with my wrist for awhile,” she told Women’s Health in May. “It was in a sling and then in a brace for a bit, and just kind of working my way back. We’re all faced with challenges from time to time, and we’ve got to figure out other things to do.” Her answer? Jogs and more squats! “I didn’t want the rest of me to feel icky too, you know?” she said.

It’s a dedication her trainer has witnessed time and again. As Oprea tells Us of the star, “She kicks ass.”

4 Leg Exercises From Carrie Underwood’s Trainer

Ask celebrity fitness trainer Erin Oprea what body part every woman wants to focus on for summer, and she’ll tell you: It’s legs. Known for her own set of envy-worthy gams and those of her celebrity clients (Carrie Underwood, Kelsea Ballerini, Jennifer Nettles), Oprea knows a thing or two about toning and sculpting your lower half.

“It is all about reaching your goals,” she explains. “If you feel that, this summer, sexy legs are what you want to achieve, it’s very doable. It just takes persistence.” According to Oprea, now is the time to start putting the wheels in motion.

We caught up with Oprea to learn about her four favorite moves for sculpting and toning, which she affectionately refers to as “Operation Summer Legs.” Even better, all of these maneuvers can be done at the gym or home. Here’s the routine:


The move: Squat down on your left leg, right toes just touching the floor for balance.

Without standing up, move your right leg back into a lunge. Keep your left leg bent and return your right leg to starting position. Do 15 reps, then repeat on the other side.


The move: Hold a 10- to 25-pound kettlebell or dumbbell with both hands. Stand with your legs wide and soften your knees.

Bend at the hips, keeping your back flat, chest up and shoulders back as you lower the weight straight down, then reach it back between your legs, controlling the motion. Push through your heels to lift back up to standing, still keeping your back flat, chest up and shoulders back.



The move: Lower into a squat, extending your hips back, keeping your knees over your toes and your chest up.

Jump onto the first stair, dropping directly back into a squat. Repeat the motion, jumping up onto the next stair and dropping into a squat when you land. When you reach the top, walk down to the bottom. Repeat five times.


The move: Stand on your right foot with your right knee bent, left leg lifted behind you. Lower your body into a squat, then jump to the left, landing on your left leg and bringing your right foot back behind you (keep it hovering off the ground). Pause in the position, then jump back onto your right foot, bringing your left foot bent behind you. Repeat this movement for one minute.

Make sure to adequately rest in between moves and repeat each circuit four times. “This can be done as often as you like but aim for at least twice a week,” says Oprea.

Carrie Underwood Dishes on Her Ultimate Leg Workout

It’s no secret that Carrie Underwood has some of the best legs in country music. But perfectly toned legs don’t come naturally, and the superstar works hard to keep hers in tip-top shape.

Though, Underwood doesn’t do all the hard work on her own. According to Glamour, the singer calls in her favorite trainer, Erin Oprea, to help whip her legs and thighs into shape. The two have been working out together for a long time, and it shows if you look at the ‘See You Again’ singer’s legs.

Want to get Underwood-like legs? You’ll have to start with everyone’s not-so-favorite workouts … squats and lunges. The star is a fan of squats to lunges — she does 15 reps of these before moving on to something else. The blonde also adds 15 reps of the lateral lunge into her leg workout. She adds a twist to the common lateral lunge by adding one 5- to 15-pound weight.

For a more intense squat, Underwood hits the stairs! She positions herself on one stair then lowers down into the squat position and jumps before landing back into the squatting position on the next step. Talk about a workout! Did you reach the top of your staircase? Just walk back down to the bottom and start all over again, because that’s how you’ll get Carrie Underwood’s legs.

For the next more unique squat, head to your kitchen. Find a hip-high countertop and hold on. Spread your legs and stand as high on your tiptoes as you possibly can. Start lowering yourself into a wide leg squat while still on your toes, then pull yourself up about an inch and then pull down about an inch. Underwood calls these leg killers the “pulsing sumo squat,” and she does them a whopping 40 times before standing upright.

She’s not afraid of skater hops to get her limbs ready for short dresses — she does these for about a minute. Underwood also likes to bust out a Bosu ball for her workout. She squats with one leg on the Bosu ball before jumping and repeating with the next leg for 30 seconds.

Last but not least, Underwood mixes in cherry pickers with up to a 25-pound kettlebell. She spreads her legs but keeps her knees from being too upright. When she bends her knees, she keeps her back flat as she starts to lower the kettlebell in her hands towards the ground.

If you start working on these eight leg-focused workout moves, you’ll have your stems ready for spring weather and short skirts in no time!
