Carrie Underwood may be a famous country star, but her beauty routine is far from star-studded. More in sync with her humble upbringings, the singer is a big fan of simple and affordable. In fact, she often opts for drugstore and two-in-one products. However, that’s not her only beauty secret.

Curious to know more? We share the No. 1 beauty tip Carrie Underwood swears by, plus some of her other tried-and-true beauty secrets, ahead.

1. Never skip cleanser

One thing Underwood never skips out on? Cleanser. According to Good Housekeeping, the country singer doesn’t like to travel with her entire arsenal, but always keeps a “decent cleanser” on hand. In addition, Underwood also doesn’t like to spend too much on beauty products and is a devoted drug store beauty consumer.

Another travel beauty tip Underwood swears by? Two-in-one products. To avoid overpacking, she uses a moisturizer formulated with SPF.

3. She exercises regularly

In addition to washing her face and protecting her skin with SPF, Underwood also exercises regularly. While exercise can have a beneficial effect on health, it can also be the ultimate secret weapon to healthy skin. Thanks to its ability to improve circulation and cleanse the body of toxins (through sweat), exercise can result in healthier-looking skin.

4. She drinks 64 ounces of water a day

Carrie Underwood’s No. 1 beauty tip? Drink water! “Drinking water, I think, is amazing. It has ridiculous benefits for every single part of your body,” the country singer told Elle Magazine. “That’s the first thing I notice if my skin looks dull: I realize I haven’t been drinking enough,” she added.

5. When in doubt, reach for coconut oil

In addition to hydrating her skin from within, Underwood also turns to the popular natural beauty ingredient, coconut oil. “I’ll wash my face, then use coconut oil to moisturize if I’ve forgotten my lotion,” she told Good Housekeeping. “It’s good right out of the show and if you’re just feeling dry,” she added.

6. Vaseline is a makeup bag must-have

Underwood’s must-try makeup tip? Use Vaseline for the perfect evening makeup look. “To make an eyeshadow look more dramatic and dewy, put a little Vaseline on a Q-tip and apply it to your lids,” she told Good Housekeeping.

Next: The way she applies blush is genius.

7. Use your fingers to apply blush

For a more natural-looking flush, Underwood likes to skip her makeup brush and use her fingers to apply blush to her cheekbones. “When you’re using a blush, you want it to look natural,” she told Good Housekeeping. Using your fingertips to apply blush can help you achieve a more natural-looking rouge.

Queen of country music Carrie Underwood has won seven Grammys and sold millions of records, but the Oklahoma native maintains the same approachable charm that fans first fell in love with 11 years ago on American Idol. She punctuates every sentence with a laugh, or an “Oh, lordy,” and insists that, although she never leaves the house without makeup, her approach to beauty is super low key. Like another undercover A-list makeup pro, Underwood handles her own stage beauty look, and she loves drugstore products.

What you wear to work out matters:

My style while working out has certainly gotten much better since launching Calia a year ago. It’s exciting to always be able to refresh my wardrobe and it does matter. If you go to the gym in super baggy, super old sweatpants versus something that you actually feel good in, it just motivates your time there.

Switch up your fitness routine:

My workouts are based around my life and what’s going on, whether or not I have a whole lot of time versus a little time because I’m with my son. I love to run, I like to get outside, I like lifting, I like doing bodyweight stuff. I mean, it depends—today was shoulder day, so we rocked the shoulder. kickboxing. I’m up for anything!

Steer clear of ‘American Idol’-era big hair:

I feel like there were a lot of interesting hair things that happened to me when I was on Idol. That was my first time having anybody fix my hair. Even growing up, when we’d go to prom, I did my own and I’ve always done my own. There were some that I don’t think I would do now–I had big hair. I had a lot of big hair. And I like big hair, but I wouldn’t go back there again.

Makeup is therapeutic:

Unless we have other filming to do earlier in the day, I always do my own stage makeup. I enjoy it. I’m honestly not the kind of person that is great sitting there and letting someone else do hair and makeup. I feel like it takes longer when somebody else does it, and it’s calming to me to be there with all my tools. It’s quiet and it’s nice and I don’t need 20 hands on me before I go on stage–it just makes me nervous.

Don’t fight the mom haircut:

For fixing my hair, I like GHD. I have a lot of their stuff, like flatirons and curling irons. Now that my hair is shorter, it’s easier to fix, which was the whole point. Cutting my hair was a “mom” move. I wash my hair every day and I know that’s not great for it, but I work out and I sweat a lot so I need to, and I’m on stage and I sweat even more. I could spend half an hour to blow it dry and have it be super long, or I could spend that time playing with my son, and I’d much rather do the latter.

Simplify your routine:

Things have just definitely gotten simpler . I blow out my hair with a round brush and I’m good. It’s not complicated at all and I’m out the door still feeling good, but that’s the the simplest level I do. Oh lordy, being a mom, half the time I’m like, ‘Did I put moisturizer on? Did I do that today?’ To be honest, whatever I can grab at a Walgreens is enough for me. I love drugstore makeup. I honestly don’t think theres anything in my bag that’s expensive.

Make makeup fun:

Growing up, my sisters, because they were teens when I was little, they had the coolest stuff. I liked when they had colorful things, not even things I would wear now, but they had colored mascara. That’s when I learned that makeup could be fun. It doesn’t have to be serious all the time.

Carrie Underwood has never been afraid to share her makeup-free face with her fans — not when her facial scar was still healing post-stitches and not now, either. It’s one of the many reasons fans adore the candid country music star. Unlike some celebs, she’s also not shy to show her followers what she looks like right after an intense workout, which in fact, she just did this past weekend in a glowing selfie.

The 36-year-old “Cry Pretty” singer took to Instagram after what appeared to be a hardcore workout, writing, “When your face matches your shirt = you had a good workout! Unless your shirt is blue…then maybe you should be concerned! 😂” The post features an unfiltered selfie of Underwood lying on a gym mat makeup-free and rosy-cheeked. She honestly looks like she could have come straight from a five-star facial rather than the gym with the level of glow she’s got going on in this photo.

Fans were quick to praise Underwood for sharing the shot, leaving comments like, “Thank you for posting yourself with no makeup and no filter. Us women don’t see it enough” and “Beautiful. I think you look perfect without any makeup!” Some users also noted how much the makeup-free photos inspired them to embrace themselves without makeup and love the skin they’re in.

It was close to this time last year when Underwood shared her first selfie after getting 40 stitches in her face after slipping on ice outside her home. Since then, her face has healed and the scar is more or less undetectable.

Scar or no scar, makeup or no makeup, Underwood is a beauty inside and out.

Copy Carrie Underwood’s CMA Awards Glow! Her Longtime Makeup Artist Shows You How

Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic

Among the countless celebs in attendance and big awards handed out at last night’s Country Music Association Awards, the buzziest moment of the night came when Brad Paisley revealed that pregnant co-host Carrie Underwood is expecting a baby boy. Pregnancy glow intact, the singer, who just released the music video to her newest single titled “Something in the Water,” has never looked better. Luckily, Underwood’s longtime hair and makeup artist, Melissa Schleicher, gave us the scoop on everything from how she created hair and makeup looks to complement Underwood’s double-digit wardrobe changes, the key to Carrie’s signature beauty look, and how she enhanced that enviable mommy-to-be glow!

This was Carrie Underwood’s seventh time co-hosting the awards with Brad Paisley. Was there anything beauty-wise that you were looking to achieve for this awards show?I loved her red-carpet look. You know, it’s hard for Carrie—this whole hosting and stuff is a long night at all that but she’s so easy. We just kind of go with it every year. We never plan anything out hair and makeup-wise, we just look at the dresses. Nothing’s really different except she’s having a baby!

Did that change things at all?No, not really. She’s just glowier. She just looks fantastic right now. She’s got that pregnancy glow for sure!

Is there anything you do in particular to complement that glow?I started with Almay’s Smart Shade CC Luminous Primer ($11; drugstore.com) and then after doing her makeup I apply a tiny bit of coconut oil. Just the tiniest bit and it just gave her that extra little pop, and I went over her foundation and everything with it and brushed it on a little bit.

How much prior to an event do you typically prepare? We really don’t prep. I have all my kits there together, but I’ll at the clothes right before the show and I’ll just kinda say, “Do you want to go up or down?” and she says, “I don’t care.” Carrie’s the easiest to get ready. She’s so easy. She’s never like, “I don’t like that!” We kind of work together. It’s been ten years almost that we’ve been doing this.

What added measures are required when prepping Underwood for a red carpet versus hosting an award show? It’s not too different. We just kind of think “Oh when we start this she’s going to be doing all these different looks,” so I have to have the hair kind of prepared for the night, so it’s a little different there than when we’re doing any other show she’s not hosting.

Underwood underwent several fashion and beauty changes, including a classic red lip. How long did you have to switch between looks?I just had her wipe her lips really quick and just did it! That’s the thing-she changes clothes and you pop a different lip on her, Almay’s Apple-A-Day Color + Care Liquid Lip Balm ($7; ulta.com) and change the eye and everything looks so different, but that didn’t take long. We usually have more time to do her hair. We sometimes get only about three minutes to change her hair. Fourteen is about the most time we have backstage.

How do you select a makeup look that will complement all her outfit changes? Her makeup was so timeless last night that it kind of goes with anything. Everything was just so classic last night.

What are your tricks for making a last all night long, especially under those hot lights?I use the Almay Smart Shade Skintone Matching Makeup in Light/Medium ($14; drugstore.com) and I brush her foundation on, so that makes it stay the whole night. We don’t powder too much because you can go back in with the Smart Shade and smooth it out again. It doesn’t mess up-it’s not like other foundations that get clumpy and dry. I have this Face Atelier brush that I am in love with-it’s my favorite for foundation. It’s like a rounded brush that’s flat on the top. I don’t ever put it on with a sponge. Never.

Underwood is also known for doing her own makeup on occasion. Are there any tricks she’s taught you? She’s amazing at makeup. Carrie has watched me over the years and she enjoys that time. That’s her chill time before she goes out and does a show. She curls her hair and she likes to put her face on. She’s really amazing at makeup! She loves black eyeliner. She’s like, “I need a little more.” We kind of fight over the black eyeliner.

You two have worked together for so long. Do you have a favorite look of hers?Gosh, there’s been so many. You know what I love? I love this year because she’s having a baby and she just looked amazing, but I love last year’s red carpet at the CMAs. Her hair was flipped over to the side she looked beautiful last year—that was one of my favorite carpet looks.

You’ve mentioned that customers are always looking for the “Carrie Underwood look.” What’s the one Carrie look that your customers regularly request? They always want to know lips or eyes. They’re like, “How did you do that smoky eye?” and they always ask about her lip color. Everybody likes the lighter lip and smoky eye. That’s her signature look for sure.

How Schleicher Created Carrie Underwood’s Stunning Red-Carpet Look for the 2014 CMAs

Hair:I set her hair with hot rollers and on every strand I sprayed a little bit of Redken Hot Sets 22 Thermal Setting Mist ($16; walgreens.com). I did her makeup, left the rollers in, and then I brushed it out and then used Oribe’s Dry Texturizing Spray ($22; oribe.com) and kind of filled in the root area with that. I did a little bit of Shu Uemura’s Touch of Gloss ($38; shuuemuraartofhair-usa.com) and it makes the hair shine and makes it bouncy and takes out the flyaways. I finished the look off with Oribe’s Superfine Hair Spray ($22; oribe.com) and have her brush it out.

Makeup:I concealed first and then used the intense eyes for hazels and blues. Anything that shimmers, I wet, so I wet the brush with the shimmer shadow it will just make it say all night long. I love the liquid eyeliner and it comes in brown and black. Sometimes I’ll start it off with a pencil just to get that smudged in there so there aren’t hard lines, and I’ll go in with that. Then I apply Almay Liquid Eyeliner in Black ($8; ulta.com). I did the rim of her eye with the brown eyeliner.

For eyelashes I use the strip lash. A friend of mine has a company called Smoke and Mirrors Beauty and he helped create the Heart Lash a while back that’s a little thicker on the ends. We love lashes. You can’t go without lashes!

I loved her red carpet lip from last night. We go to use something from Almay that no one’s gotten to use last night. It’s Smart Shade Butter Kiss Lipstick in Pink Light (out in December). It’s awesome. It’s moisturizing but it’s got great color to it. We got to use it last night and we’re really excited!

There’s no denying that Carrie Underwood is stunning. From her sexy hair to her flawless skin, she always looks amazing on the red carpet. So it’s no surprise that Olay chose the country music darling as their very first brand ambassador. “I’m really excited about this partnership because I do feel like Olay is a brand that people trust they’ve been around for over 50 years for a good reason,” says Carrie.

While Carrie is always at the top of our most gorgeous celebrities list, her beauty routine is surprisingly simple. “Nothing beats good cleansing and moisturizing. It doesn’t have to be complicated you don’t need 50 different things in your medicine cabinet. A good cleanser and a moisturizer with a sunscreen in it and you’re good to go,” she says.

The busy country singer also likes to keep her primping time down to a minimum by using products that multitask like the Olay Total Effects line and their revamped Daily Facials cleansing cloths (available in 2011). “If you buy an eye makeup remover, it’s always too oily or it stings. They don’t do the trick and the Daily Facials get eye makeup off like awesome,” she says.

What’s her go-to makeup look when she doesn’t have an army of pros getting her ready? A sultry, smoky eye, but if time doesn’t permit a lot of primping, she’ll just layer on the mascara. “Sometimes you can skip a lot if you just go straight to the mascara. I feel naked if I don’t have mascara on. I know some people feel that way about lip gloss, but I’m a mascara girl. A little bronzer with mascara and you are good to go I can be ready in like five minutes.”

Carrie also recently discovered makeup primers and since then has been obsessed with them. “I never thought I’d be a big primer person. I was like ‘that’s something the makeup companies are just making up and it’s going to give me one more step’. I just do the cleansing and the moisturizing and then primer and I don’t even need to use foundation any more because it makes everything smoosh together really nice.”

We couldn’t walk away without getting some hair tips from Carrie her fabulous hairstyles are extremely popular in the Makeover Studio. “In a photo shoot, their objective is to make your hair look awesome, but sometimes your hair suffers in the process, so I really love a good hair mask. Moroccanoil and Rusk have some great ones. Find something that’s really good and moisturizing and one night a week just soak and put that on there and leave it on there for a bit the longer you leave it on, the better it works.”

Carrie Underwood can carry multiple tunes at once, seemingly with the greatest of ease.

She’s raising a son, Isaiah, 3, with hockey player hubby Mike Fisher. She’s got another bun in the oven. And she’s on the road for her Cry Pretty Tour 360, sponsored by her clothing brand CALIA by Carrie Underwood. Plus, she’s one tough cookie, heading back on stage after receiving more than 40 stitches on her face following a fall at home last year, and revealing that she’s dealt with a number of miscarriages.

And if having a set of powerful pipes isn’t enough, Underwood’s also known to handle her own glam — an unexpected skill for a superstar of her stature.

“Yes, that’s still true. I really love to do my own hair and makeup and I keep it fairly simple when I’m on the road! I think there is a lot of trial and error when it comes to makeup and it takes a good amount of practice,” she said via email. Here are a few of her go-tos.

Hair essentials

“I’ve recently discovered I love using hot rollers. That way my hair is getting done for me while I do my makeup. It might take a couple of trials to get it right, but once you figure it out it can really be a time saver,” said Underwood.

Anti-aging must-haves

“Nothing can beat a nap to help you look and feel fresh, but when that isn’t possible, a few minutes with a good eye mask can help!” said Underwood, who loves Shiseido eye masks.

Fitness favorites

Her music aside, Underwood is busy with CALIA, which is expanding into outerwear. She noted that it’s an extension of her lifestyle, which includes working out whenever possible.

“Sometimes I have to get creative when I’m on the road with limited options, but the most important thing is doing something. I just feel so much better afterwards,” she said. “I have so many things going on all the time, exercising helps me reset and regroup with myself — it’s the perfect way to get rid of any stress that has built up over the day.”

She eats clean, and loves “lunges, squats, deadlifts and things like that, with short bursts of cardio.”

Plus, staying fit serves a practical purpose: “I also want to make sure I’m in the best shape that I can be so that I can keep up with Isaiah all day long. He’s always moving and on-the-go,” she said.

Underwood feels the most beautiful when she’s in mom mode with her toddler.

“He likes to watch me get ready, which is really sweet, and sometimes when I’m getting ready for a date night or going to church, he lets me know, ‘Mommy, you look pretty.’ When I’m exercising, I feel strong and capable and feel better about myself when I see the results,” she said. “I know I’m a better mom, wife and performer when I feel fit and confident.”

That’s music to our ears.

Simple as that! Carrie Underwood is a big fan of making her life easy, especially after giving birth to son Isaiah, 15 months. Which is why, when it comes to her Storyteller tour makeup, she follows an uncomplicated routine — which she does herself — that still comes out incredibly glamorous.

In fact, her statement eye and glossy lip involve just six products. Underwood, 33, starts with Almay Smart Shade Skintone Matching Makeup for a smooth canvas. Then, the beauty brand’s ambassador mattifies her look with Almay’s corresponding pressed powder.

After perfecting her complexion, the “Smoke Break” singer applies Almay Intense i-Color Shadows in Evening Smoky for Hazel Eyes to her lid, defining her shape with Almay Intense i-Color Gel Smooth Liner for Hazel Eyes. Mascara and liquid lip balm top everything off.

“One thing I love about Almay’s eyeshadows is that it’s all laid out for you — color-coordinating shades that look good together,” Underwood says in a behind-the-scenes video from her Storyteller tour filmed for the makeup brand.

One thing she loves about her look? It doesn’t come off. “The Storyteller tour is bigger than anything I’ve ever done before, and I’m all over that stage because I want to see everybody,” Underwood, who married Mike Fisher in July 2010, said of working up a sweat while performing. “ I look the same when I come off the stage as I did going on.”

There’s no denying the appeal of all-things smoky — smoky chipotle peppers, smoky grilled meats, “Smokey and the Bandit,” etc. But perhaps the smokiest and most alluring of all is Carrie Underwood’s smoky, almost golden eye makeup.

We long ago gave up on trying to recreate Carrie’s enticing eyes, but that all changed when we met up with Lancôme beauty expert Sandy Linter. Once we had Linter (and her extensive knowledge of makeup trends) to ourself in New York City’s Rita Hazan Salon, we asked her to demonstrate the techniques that go into giving the country star her perfect peepers.

Carrie Underwood’s Smoky Golden Eyes

• Beginning with the darkest color in your palette, use a small brush to apply eyeshadow to the outer corners of the eyelid. Sweep inward along the “hollow” over each eye, stopping about midway between the inner and outer corner of the lid.

• Using a larger (clean) eyeshadow brush, blend the color inward into the hollows of the eyes and all along the lid.

• Pick a lighter shade — something in the gold or metallic family — and use the same brush to apply this hue to the section directly under the smokier eyeshadow. Blend the lighter hue into the darker one, being careful not to completely mix the two shades. “Always remember that your eyes will look bigger if the lid is slightly lighter than the outer corner of the eye,” says Linter.

• Finish by applying a bit of highlighter directly under the brow of each eye to contrast the smoky lid.

It is always hard to believe when you meet a superstar that you love only to find out she really is THAT amazing in person. But that is exactly what happened when I met the one-and-only Carrie Underwood yesterday for our chat about beauty, husbands, and the perils of working out with makeup on.

American Idol favorite turned world favorite, Underwood has taken the world by storm. And with numerous number one singles, it is no wonder her fan base has extended far beyond the country niche. But who knew a girl this busy had time to extend a helping hand? Underwood teamed up with Olay to give recognition to millions of moms on this quickly approaching Mother’s Day. Olay knows that the person who represents true beauty are moms, and the Olay Beauty By Example program is designed to encourage daughters to recognize that. Women are invited to log on to www.facebook.com/Olay, and sign Olay’s online declaration to acknowledge their moms as their “Beauty By Example.” In return for every person who participates, Olay will contribute one ounce of product, up to one million ounces, to look good feel better, (a national organization dedicated to improving the self-esteem and quality of life of women undergoing treatment for cancer).

No one knows more about being beautiful from the inside out than Carrie Underwood. “It’s not like I have a “superstar Carrie” that uses these things and “normal Carrie” that uses those things. I believe that being beautiful is from the inside, out, it’s all important to feeling good inside and outside: using the right products, eating right, exercising, drinking a lot of water. All of that goes hand in hand and will make you the best you that you can be.”

Speaking of “superstar Carrie” vs. “normal Carrie”, the star says she has had to make some adjustments to her daily life since becoming famous. “I quit going to the gym,” she said, “it is too much of an effort to look good, and I will never understand makeup at the gym. I just work out from home now.” But becoming famous isn’t the only thing that has boosted her beauty routine, now that she’s married she likes to put in an extra effort for her hockey-player hubby.

“Mike loves the whole natural thing. I know he loves me when I get all dressed up, and I want to make an effort for him, and I want him to notice things,” she explained. Trust us, Carrie. He notices. So much so that he’s been skimming off the top of your beauty counter. “I’ve caught him stealing my Olay Complete. He was going golfing and he was like, ‘Do you have anything,’ and I was like ‘yeah!’ And so I gave it to him and it just disappeared after that.”

Carrie Underwood has a very simple secret to keep her face fresh and do away with the effects of the devastating injury she suffered last year — and it only costs about $3.

This week, the actress and singer took to Instagram to share one of her favorite beauty secrets. Underwood posted a picture of herself getting ready for the Country Music Awards by sipping a cup of coffee and throwing on a pair of eye masks. As Country Living noted, the total cost for her facial care regimen is about $3.

Carrie Underwood has been open about her beauty routine, often sharing some of her secrets with fans and posting pictures of some of her favorite products. Carrie is a spokeswoman for Almay, and said the brand’s Healthy Glow Makeup with self-tanner is a critical part of her arsenal.

“I was like, ‘Wait, there’s self-tanner in the makeup?’ For so many years, I would only put self-tanner on when I didn’t have to go anywhere because it was going to make my makeup look weird,” Carrie told People magazine last year. “So it’s nice they’ve figured out a way to get it in the makeup.”

Carrie also told the magazine that makeup is a “confidence builder” for her, and that seems to have come in handy after the injury she suffered. Many of the reports in the weeks she was away from the public eye claimed that Carrie was not feeling confident and was concerned about how people would see her.

A post shared by Carrie Underwood (@carrieunderwood) on Jun 6, 2018 at 1:32pm PDT

There had also been some lingering worry that Carrie Underwood’s scars from a bad fall she suffered in November may have been very noticeable. As Carrie took some time away from the spotlight to heal, there were a number of tabloid reports claiming that her injury was “disfiguring,” and others claimed that Carrie was not keen to return to the spotlight.

The absence seemed to kick up all kinds of rumors, as a series of other reports also claimed that Carrie Underwood was pregnant (possibly with twins) and other reports that she and husband Mike Fisher were headed for a divorce. So far, none of those reports have come to fruition.

Since those initial rumors suggesting her scars were large, Carrie Underwood has made a number of appearances in recent weeks with no noticeable change to her appearance outside of a small bump above her lip. The $3 eye masks may really be helping.
