Words I never would have put in the same sentence: “Charlize Theron” and “overweight.” But after gaining 50 pounds for her role as an overworked mom in new movie, Tully, the actress says it was harder than she thought it would be to get back in shape.

“I just I wanted to feel what this woman felt, and I think was a way for me to get closer to her and get into that mindset,” Charlie told Entertainment Tonight. “You know, it was a huge surprise to me. I got hit in the face pretty hard with depression. Yeah, for the first time in my life I was eating so much processed foods and I drank way too much sugar. I was not that fun to be around on this film.”

Charlize says she had three months to gain the weight. “The first three weeks are always fun because you’re just like a kid in a candy store. So it was fun to go and have breakfast at In-N-Out and have two milkshakes,” she said. “And then after three weeks, it’s not fun anymore. Like, all of a sudden you’re just done eating that amount and then it becomes a job. I remember having to set my alarm in the middle of the night in order to just maintain .”

“I would literally wake up at two in the morning and I’d have a cup of cold macaroni and cheese just next to me,” she said. “I would wake up and I would just eat it…I would just, like, shove it in my throat. It’s hard to maintain that weight.”

Charlize says she gained so much weight that her kids thought she was pregnant.

She ended up losing it but said the process was “hell.” “It took about a year and a half,” she said. “It was a long journey, very long journey.”

“And it’s hard because I had press junkets and movies around it and nobody knew that I had done it for this,” she said. “And I think in the beginning everybody thought I was wearing, like, when the first photos came out, everyone was, like, prosthetics.”

This isn’t the first time Charlize has put on weight for a role: She gained 30 pounds to play real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster. But while Charlize has said she loved gaining weight for that role, this time around was much more difficult.

“I was like, this is taking a really long time,” she said. “Because on Monster, I just didn’t snack for five days and I was fine.”

Charlize Theron has undergone some pretty drastic physical transformations for movie roles throughout her career, but gaining 50 lbs for her new film, Tully, was still incredibly challenging.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Theron revealed, “I gained close to 50 pounds for this film. I just I wanted to feel what this woman felt, and I think that was a way for me to get closer to her and get into that mindset.”

But to put on the weight, and keep it on throughout filming, Theron had to majorly change her eating habits. And while altering her diet was fun at first, eating so much sugar quickly took its toll on her body.

Theron told ET:

“The first three weeks are always fun because you’re just like a kid in a candy store. So it was fun to go and have breakfast at In-N-Out and have two milkshakes. And then after three weeks, it’s not fun anymore. Like, all of a sudden you’re just done eating that amount and then it becomes a job. It’s hard to maintain that weight.” Getty Images

So, while a free pass to eat anything and everything you want might sound like a lot of fun, it carried some extremely difficult side effects for Theron. The Tully star revealed, “I got hit in the face pretty hard with depression. Yeah, for the first time in my life I was eating so much processed foods and I drank way too much sugar. I was not that fun to be around on this film.”

Theron also discussed how different it was attempting to lose the weight she’d gained for Tully, compared to the weight she put on for her role in Monster: “You know your body at 27 is a little different than your body at 43, and my doctor made sure to make me very aware of that. Like, you are 42, calm down, you’re not dying, all good.”

Charlize Theron says she was criticized for gaining weight and not smiling in her most iconic role

She may have been playing an infamous real-life serial killer in the 2003 thriller Monster, but even so, Charlize Theron just didn’t smile enough according to the male financiers of the film. Um, wow.

During a recent producers’ roundtable discussion with The Hollywood Reporter, Theron was asked about one of the biggest fights she ever engaged in to get a project made. This fight, she explained, happened when she signed on to produce and star in Monster, which was directed by then-first-time director Patty Jenkins. Theron said that her weight gain for the role and lack of smiling was a bone of contention between her and the film’s financiers.

Keep in mind that Monster is a biopic about Aileen Wuornos, a serial killer who murdered seven men between 1989 and 1990.

“There were a lot of fights,” Theron explained. “As soon as I started gaining weight, I had one of the financiers call me up. Actually, his wife saw me, and she was like, ‘Did you see Charlize? Have you seen what she looks like?’ And I got that call, like, ‘What’s going on with that?'”

One of the financiers asked Theron “what she was doing.” “‘You never smiled. You look so angry, you look horrible,’” Theron said the man told her. The backlash even made her panic a bit for taking such a risk with this role.

She believes the negative feedback from her financiers came from a place of sexism. “The character was very unusual,” said Theron, who ultimately won the Oscar for Best Actress for playing Wuornos.

Theron continued: “I think the financiers actually thought they were basically paying for a hot lesbian movie with me and Christina Ricci.”

Ah. There it is.

Thankfully, Theron did not let the backlash get to her, and her risk paid off big time. She expertly portrayed the troubled and angry Wuornos, and the character became one of her most memorable roles. Sorry, not sorry you didn’t get your “hot lesbian movie,” fellas. Theron (and Ricci) had work to do.

Charlize Theron Had to Gain and Lose 50 Pounds for a Movie Role

It’s no secret that occasionally, roles in movies and TV shows require actors to alter how much they weigh in real life. Christian Bale whittled his weight down to 121 pounds in order to play an emaciated insomniac in The Machinist; Anne Hathaway is currently gaining weight for a forthcoming role; and Charlize Theron recently had to do the same thing for a movie, which she’s addressing very candidly.

The Tully actress had to undergo a “very long” physical transformation in order to portray her latest character Marlo, and she sat down with Entertainment Tonight to talk about the 50 pounds she had to gain and then lose over the span of a year and a half.

“I gained close to 50 pounds for this film,” she said. “I just I wanted to feel what this woman felt, and I think that was a way for me to get closer to her and get into that mindset. You know, it was a huge surprise to me. I got hit in the face pretty hard with depression. Yeah, for the first time in my life I was eating so much processed foods and I drank way too much sugar. For Theron, gaining the weight was just as difficult as losing it.

On Wednesday, she also appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and talked about what exactly she ate to put on the pounds. “I ate a lot of everything, but my favorite thing—my drug of choice is potato chips,” she told DeGeneres. “I had a bag in my car, a bag in the bathroom, a bag in the kitchen, a bag on the couch, a bag in my trailer. Everywhere I went there was just a bag.”

This is not the first time Theron has had to intentionally fluctuate her weight for a role. She famously transformed to play serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster, which won her an Oscar. For Tully though, it took her longer to lose the weight after filming wrapped up.

“I was worried. I was like, this is taking a really long time,” she said. “Because on Monster, I just didn’t snack for five days and I was fine. You know your body at 27 is a little different than your body at 43, and my doctor made sure to make me very aware of that. Like, you are 42, calm down, you’re not dying, all good.”

She told DeGeneres that the mental aspect of the weight gain was just as difficult as the physical. “The hardest thing for me was I wasn’t prepared for how that amount of processed food will affect your mood. I dealt with depression for the first time. And so what they say about what you eat is kind of who you are is so true. I ate like a person who just didn’t move, and I felt like that,” Theron added. “I was lethargic and tired all the time. That was a hard thing to break, because it’s more mental than it is almost physical. You can stop eating, but if you don’t feel good about yourself, then it’s hard.”

Theron gained more than 30 pounds in order to play the role of Aileen Wuornos, the serial killer in “Monster,” a role that earned her an Academy Award. She was able to achieve the weight gain by eating a lot of Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Theron has claimed that gaining weight was not her only goal. To gain weight, she had to completely change her lifestyle, and she believes that the lifestyle changes better emulates her character, which allows her to play the role better. Amazingly, she was also able to lose all of the weight by the time of the film’s premiere. Those people who are looking to lose weight should make lifestyle changes, such as dietary changes and participate in moderate exercise on a daily basis.

“Monster”

Charlize Theron gained 30 pounds and an Oscar to play serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster. Theron was pragmatic about the weight saying, “It wasn’t about getting fat. Aileen wasn’t fat. Aileen carried scars on her body from her lifestyle, and if I’d gone to make this movie with my body—physically I’m very athletic—I don’t know that I would have felt the things Aileen felt with her body. It was about getting to a place where I felt closer to how Aileen was living.”

Charlize Theron’s diets are all over the map. She’s eaten 30 lbs. worth of doughnuts and potato chips to portray serial killer Aileen Wuornos in “Monster.” She’s eaten… well, almost nothing to portray a dying woman in “Sweet November.” And her typical daily diet when she’s not prepping for a movie role runs the gamut from fresh fruit to steak and eggs.

Charlize Theron also goes to the extreme when she needs to lose weight. No word on what specific foods Theron ate to lose weight after the filming of “Monster” wrapped up, but she is reported to have eaten only two tiny meals a day. She also cut out alcohol.

In fact, she routinely cuts out regular meals when she needs to lose weight. For her role in “Sweet November,” Theron did not eat dinner, refused to eat anything after 5 p.m., and cut out all starches and alcohol. Cutting out most carbohydrates is probably why Charlize said she felt weaker and unlike her usual athletic self.*Charlize Theron has always been athletic. She was trained as a ballet dancer, but also frequently enjoys squash and ice skating. Theron also does a lot of yoga and takes long runs.

Charlize Theron is a dedicated actress.

The 42-year-old actress won an Oscar for her role and intense transformation in the 2003 drama Monster, and now Theron has completed another “very long” physical journey in her latest film, Tully.

ET’s Kevin Frazer sat down with Theron at the movie’s junket at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles on Tuesday, where they discussed how she gained weight for the role of Marlo, maintained it, and ultimately lost it after a year and a half.

“I gained close to 50 pounds for this film,” Theron shared. I was not that fun to be around on this film.”

Theron had about three and a half months to gain weight for the film, in which she plays a mother of three who is gifted a nanny.

“The first three weeks are always fun because you’re just like a kid in a candy store. So it was fun to go and have breakfast at In-N-Out and have two milkshakes,” she explained. “And then after three weeks, it’s not fun anymore. Like, all of a sudden you’re just done eating that amount and then it becomes a job. I remember having to set my alarm in the middle of the night in order to just maintain .”

“I would literally wake up at two in the morning and I’d have a cup of cold macaroni and cheese just next to me,” she recalled. “I would wake up and I would just eat it…I would just, like, shove it in my throat. It’s hard to maintain that weight.”

As for how her two children — 6-year-old son Jackson and 2-year-old daughter August — handled her weight gain, Theron shared that they though she was pregnant.

“My little one was convinced that I had a baby in my belly,” she laughed. “I had a very similar moment with my older one. Like in the film, where she saw my body one day and was like, ‘Mom, what has happened to your body.’ It was a little too close to home. I shared it with Jas and I was like, ‘This is a little too real for me.’ And still refer to this movie as the movie where mommy had a big belly.”

The actress ultimately lost the weight, but acknowledged that it “was hell.”

“There’s nothing fun about that. It took about a year and a half. It was a long journey, very long journey,” she explained. “And it’s hard because I had press junkets and movies around it and nobody knew that I had done it for this. And I think in the beginning everybody thought I was wearing, like, when the first photos came out, everyone was, like, prosthetics. And then I went on press junkets and it was like nobody knew.”

One pitfall, she shared, was that this time, compared to her weight gain for Monster, it took longer to shed the pounds.

But the work was well worth it at the end to show audiences the hardships of parenting.

“The struggle is real for everybody,” Theron stressed. “What’s beautiful about this film, it’s unifying. It makes you realize that nobody has it easier than you or they don’t experience any of those things. It’s messy.”

She also explained that it’s important for mothers to tell their husbands and co-parents how they’re feeling.

“A lot of fathers have come up to me and said, ‘I just didn’t know. I didn’t know,'” she shared. “I think that’s on us. I think we should feel more comfortable to say, ‘This is really hard and this is not what everybody told me it was going to look like. And why, when I say this, does it feel like it’s handled with shame?’ It shouldn’t be. The stigma of what parenthood looks like; we should get rid of it.”

This isn’t the first time Theron has opened up about struggling with motherhood. Watch below to hear what she’s previously shared.

Tully opens in theaters on May 4.

Before we disclose the exact diet plan and Supplement plan Charlize Theron used for the last 2 months (We have a feeling it’s going to shock you a bit) – we want to cover her top 5 weight loss tips for struggling females. Who better to learn from than somebody who has access to the top body transformation experts in the world!

Charlize Theron Top 3 Metabolism Boosting Tricks

1. All natural metabolism boosting pills

The first trick that she incorporates to burn more calories every day is she takes a powerful all natural metabolism boosting pill each morning.

These pills were recommended by her world class trainer and are 100 percent safe and 200 percent effective if you are a female who struggles with a sluggish metabolism and non-stop cravings.

Theron claims that she has had a nasty habit her entire life of “falling off the wagon” and once she starts indulging in unhealthy food she literally can’t stop! Charlize told a story about one awful night when she downed an entire bag of peanut butter cups.

Besides cravings, these pills pack a powerful weight loss punch. They are so good at speeding up your resting metabolism that the average female can expect to burn an extra 300-400 calories per day from the pills.

While this may not seen like much – that turns out to be an extra lb. of pure fat each week which really adds up when you factor in all of the other tips we are going to share.

While many weight loss pills and stimulants have dangerous side effects, the good news with these are that they are 100 percent safe for long term use and you will not regain the weight you lost after you stop taking them (which is really rare with weight loss pills)

2. Carbs in the AM

One of the worst things you can do for your metabolism is staying away from carbs until later in the day. Typically, women looking to lose weight will start the day off trying to eat really low carb – and then succumb to their cravings later in the day when its even worse to eat those carbs. (Remember that story about the peanut butter cups? This happened to be on a day when she tried to eat ZERO carbs all day, and then finally cracked around midnight)

Theron’s trainer recommends that you start off your day by consuming slow digesting carbohydrates that will speed up your metabolism and give you sustainable levels of energy. (weight loss diet plan below)

Another positive fat burning benefit of this diet trick is that you will blunt your cortisol levels in the morning when you eat a combination of vitamin C and carbohydrates. These two things in combination with each other will help you shut down cortisol immediately – which is your number 1 fat storage hormone.

Charlize Theron will usually go with the combination of oatmeal and organic fruit on top that is rich in Vitamin C like tangerines, blueberries, and even Kiwi!

3. Miracle Metabolism Drink

Another diet hack that Charlize implements is that she will drink a “fat burning miracle drink” as her trainer calls it every afternoon that drastically spikes her energy levels and boosts her metabolism.
The good news is that this drink is incredibly easy to make and is also delicious. Charlize says that she continues to drink this “miracle-aid” even when she is not trying to lose weight because it gives her so much energy and helps her skin look radiant!

First, you will heat up 16 ounces of hot water, and then mix in 1 tsp. Matcha green tea, 1 tsp. cinnamon, ½ squeezed lemon juice, and 1 tbsp. of liquid coconut oil.

These ingredients are all super healthy and will boost your metabolism and energy levels all day long.

If you are serious about your weight loss and energy levels, try out this miracle metabolism drink each day.

Matcha green tea is one of the world’s most potent antioxidants and metabolism boosters and is up to 20 x stronger than regular green tea. Coconut oil and cinnamon are potent antioxidants and will supercharge your weight loss.

Seriously – you need to try this drink every day and see the amazing results after just 1 week. (It’s only endorsed by one of the top female movie stars in the world, no big deal!)

Adele Weight Loss Workout Plan

Charlize Theron is a very busy woman and sometimes didn’t have the luxury to train at a gym. The good news about being a star is something the workout comes to you, so often times her trainer would drive up the Hollywood Hills to conduct the workout at her house!

Charlize wanted a workout regimen that was adaptable to her lifestyle– so her world class trainer gave her a workout regimen that she could knock out with a kettle bell, resistance tube, and her own bodyweight.

This workout regimen stressed her lower body muscles and allowed her to turn into a calorie burning machine far after the workout was finished. (The real key to a great weight loss transformation)

Theron would typically perform her lower body resistance training workouts about 45 minutes after taking her metabolism boosting pill to stimulate her weight loss and raise her energy levels to the max.

Let’s take a look at her 4 times per week lower body workout regimen.

Kettle bell domination (Twice Per Week usually on Monday’s and Thursday’s)

Charlize’s trainer had her perform 3 sets of each of these exercises, with about 60 Seconds rest in between.

By keeping her rest times short she actually got in some cardio as well as resistance training. This is one of the most important facets to Theron’s amazing weight loss transformation.

Exercise 1: Kettle Bell Swings

Sets: 3

Rest: 60 Seconds

Exercise 2: Kettle Bell dead lifts

Sets: 3

Rest: 60 Seconds
Exercise 3: Kettle Bell Goblet Squats

Sets: 3

Rest: 60 Seconds
Exercise 4: Kettle Bell Walking Lunge

Sets: 3

Rest: 60 Seconds
Resistance Tubes and Bodyweight (Twice Per Week usually on Tuesday and Saturday)

Workout number 2 consisted solely of resistance tubes and lower body body-weight exercises.
She would perform her sets during workout number 2 as “time under tension” instead of counting repetitions.

This allowed her heart rate to enter the fat burning zone and tone her lower body muscles.

It also helped Charlize sky rocket her resting metabolism following the workout.

She would perform these sets at varying time under tension. Try this intense workout regimen out!

Exercise One: Resistance tubes Front Squat

Sets: 3

Time under tension: 40 Seconds

Rest Time: 60 Seconds

Exercise Two: Resistance Reverse Lunges

Sets: 3

Time under tension: 40 Seconds

Rest Time: 60 Seconds

Exercise Three: Resistance tubes Overhead Squat

Sets: 3

Time under tension: 30 Seconds

Rest Time: 45 seconds

Exercise Four: Wall Sits

Sets: 3

Charlize Theron is wasting away and she has become a shell of her former self!

The star is looking incredibly “scrawny” these days and friends fear she’s taken drastic dieting and exercising to the extreme, an insider exclusively told RadarOnline.com.

“She’s known for putting herself through torture to get in shape for a role and she’s doing it during awards season too, but a lot of people in her circle are shocked by her skin-and-bones appearance,” said the source.

Theron, 44, has been nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her role as Megyn Kelly in Bombshell, the movie based on the Fox News sexual harassment scandal.

Now some close to Theron worry she’s taking her preparations for the the Academy Awards on Sunday, February 9, too far.

“Her arms look like sticks and her legs have virtually no flesh on them,” said the insider, who revealed Theron “does a punishing workout every day and consumes nothing more than juices, salads and fruit.”

“Charlize clearly thinks she looks great but people are beginning to worry she’s headed down a dangerous path,’ added a source.

As Radar previously reported, Theron has admitted to taking things to the extreme in the past.

“I used to be like a wake and baker in my 20s,” Theron told Howard Stern last spring.

“Then something changed in my early 30s, and I was no fun on it anymore,” she noted. “I didn’t get paranoid, I just became a bore.”

“Like I didn’t want to talk,” she added, “I only wanted to eat; I just wanted to lie there; I just became so anti-social.”

Charlize Theron says she became depressed after eating junk food and gaining 50 pounds for her new role

  • Charlize Theron put on 50 pounds for her role in the film “Tully,” as Entertainment Tonight reported.
  • The process took a toll on Theron’s mental health as she struggled to maintain a higher weight.
  • “I got hit in the face pretty hard with depression,” she tells Entertainment Tonight.

Many actors and actresses have gone to great lengths to gain or lose weight for roles, and Charlize Theron is no exception. In 2003, she gained a significant amount of weight for her Oscar-winning role in “Monster.” The actress recently gained weight again to play an overworked mom in her upcoming film, “Tully.” This time, however, Theron says the 50-pound weight gain led to depression.

“I wanted to feel what this woman felt, and I think that was a way for me to get closer to her and get into that mindset,” Theron tells Entertainment Tonight. “It was a huge surprise to me. I got hit in the face pretty hard with depression.”

Charlize Theron shared how her latest weight gain for a role left her depressed. Focus Features

Theron had just over three months to gain the weight. At first, she said the process was fun. “You’re just like a kid in a candy store,” she tells Entertainment Tonight. “It was fun to go and have breakfast at In-N-Out and have two milkshakes.”

But three weeks into the process, Theron said eating started to feel like a job in itself. She went to extremes to continue putting on weight, even setting alarms in the middle of the night to eat cold macaroni and cheese that she kept by her bedside. “I would wake up and I would just eat it…I would just, like, shove it in my throat,” she tells Entertainment Tonight.

Theron ate more processed foods and drank more sugar than she had in her entire life, which she thinks contributed to her mood. As it turns out, Theron’s assumption isn’t far off. Both processed foods and sugar have been linked to depression and mood swings. One 2017 study published in Scientific Reports found that foods and beverages with added sugars were linked to depressive symptoms. Another study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry found that participants with a diet higher in processed food had a 58% higher risk of depression than those who ate very few processed foods.

Theron’s struggle with depression as a result of her weight gain has also been backed up scientifically. Many studies, including a review of 15 studies published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, have associated weight gain with depression, and vice versa.

Theron worried that it was taking her too long time to shed the weight after filming. Getty

As difficult as gaining weight was for Theron, she said losing it was even harder. It took her a year and a half to return to her pre-“Tully” size, a process that she referred to as “hell.” At times, she worried that she might not lose the weight. “On ‘Monster,’ I just didn’t snack for five days and I was fine,” she tells Entertainment Tonight. “You know your body at 27 is a little different than your body at 43.”

Theron had to work harder to lose weight than she had before, as it’s common for people to have more difficulty managing and losing weight as they age due to factors such as a slower metabolism and less physical activity.

Theron is now back to her pre-“Tully” size, but she noted that her experience parallels that of her character in the movie. “The struggle is real for everybody,” Theron tells Entertainment Tonight. “What’s beautiful about this film, it’s unifying. It makes you realize that nobody has it easier than you or they don’t experience any of those things. It’s messy.”
