Whoever came up with the saying “beauty is pain” was probably in the process of getting a bikini wax. Before you schedule your appointment this season, find out which type of wax will work best for your hair type and skin concerns and whether you should go for a “full-bush Brazilian” or a honey wax. We can’t promise it will be painless, but at least you won’t get be embarrassed when the aesthetician asks you to turn over.

Waxing Styles

__Brazilian:__You will be bald as a newborn baby after enduring this meticulous waxing service. All hair is removed from the top of the bikini area, inside the labia, and between the butt cheeks. This is definitely Miley Cyrus’s favorite choice because of her high-cut costumes.

Bikini: You can’t mess with a classic. This option just removes the hair around your pantyline. Traditionally you’ll end up with a triangle shape. Feel free to request a trim, too. It’s the perfect option for those who are into the high-waisted bikini trend or first-time waxers.

__Full-Bush Brazilian:__Hippies will rejoice at the latest waxing trend—a cross between the bikini and the Brazilian. All the hair is removed from the buttocks and the labia, but the “bush” remains unscathed and free.

__Landing strip:__This one is for fun-loving ladies who like shapes (hearts for Valentine’s Day, perhaps?). It covers all the areas of a Brazilian wax but leaves a shape of your choice, usually a vertical strip, on top.

Types of Wax

Honey wax or sugaring: If you prefer an organic approach to hair removal or have sensitive skin, this should be your method of choice. These recipes are based on ancient hair-removal rituals. The mixture is a combination of honey, sugar, lemon juice, or water that is heated to a taffy-like consistency (pro: It’s also easy to DIY). Because it’s all-natural, this wax is more gentle on the skin, and it can be used cold (read: no burning). This sweet recipe also doesn’t adhere to the skin—only to hair—so pain is minimized.

__Hard wax:__This type of wax is smeared on in thick patches and removed without the use of cloth. The wax cools and hardens around hair. Try this method if you have coarse or thick hair around your pantyline or underarms. This wax tends to hurt less and is available at chains like Bliss Spa and European Wax Center.

__Strip wax:__Soft wax is the most well-known type. The product is used with cloth to remove hair. This method is loved because it’s quick, but painless…not so much. It’s the ideal option for removing hair from large areas, like legs and arms.

Brazilian Wax vs Bikini Wax

As women, we tweeze, shave, wax and pluck any hair we can find on our body. We spend countless hours in the bathroom tirelessly trying to achieve silky smooth skin. Once it’s bikini season, we freak out trying to make sure our bikini line is hair free. Every girl knows, shaving your private parts is like doing yoga in the shower…with razor blades.

So why doesn’t everyone pick waxing over shaving. Bikini waxes, are more efficient, last longer, and leave your skin smoother.

Bikini Wax Vs. Brazilian Wax

What is a Bikini Wax?

As the name implies, a bikini wax is the removal of hair along the bikini line. A bikini wax ensures that when you’re in your bikini bottom, you do not have to worry about any hair outside of the lines of your bikini. This typical bikini wax is simple, relatively, fast.

What is a Full Bikini Wax?

A full bikini wax removes the hair along the bikini line but also goes further into the the frontal part of your bikini area. Based on your preference you can get as much hair as you want removed from the frontal part of your bikini area with a full bikini wax.

What is a Brazilian Wax?

A Brazilian Wax is the next step from the full bikini wax. A Brazilian Wax removes all the hair from the frontal part of your bikini area and then goes all the way back. Every bit of hair is waxed off during a Brazilian wax: hair on the front, back, sides, and in between. Removing all the hair in your bikini area. This wax is perfect for those who like the nude feel and do not want any hair whatsoever down there.

  • Brazilian removes all of your hair
  • Lasts Longer that a regular bikini wax
  • Avoid razor burn

It is truly based on personal preference whether you want a Brazilian wax or standard bikini wax, waxing your bikini area is better than shaving it if you want the area to stay bare for longer.

What Does a Bikini Wax Look Like?

A bikini wax looks different depending on what style of bikini wax you get. When you get a basic bikini wax, you are only waxing around the panty line. When you get a Full Bikini wax, you are waxing deeper into the panty line and when you get a Brazilian you are waxing virtually all the hair off of your bikini area.

Why should you wax your bikini area instead of shaving?

When you wax, you are getting hair straight from the roots, when you shave, you merely are slicing the hair above the skin, so when you shave, the hair grows back much faster and sometimes even thicker. When you wax, hair is being pulled from the roots making it grow back much slower and thinner. Waxing will give your skin a much smoother feel down there.

How Long Does a Brazilian Wax last?

Just as everything else in this world, everyone is different. In general, you can expect the hair to begin to grow back in about 2-4 weeks. Most people who get there Bikini routinely waxed go in once every 3 to 5 weeks. It just depends on the person.

Does a Brazilian Wax hurt?

Pain is beauty, when it comes to waxing this saying holds true. However the pain from a Brazilian wax is super quick and far from extreme pain. The people who wax you are professionals and they know what they are doing. If you trust the people you wax with, you will be fine. Almost all waxing centers use soothing oil post waxing to soothe the pain. Once you wax more then once, the pain becomes less and less as you get used to it the less it will hurt.

Where can I get a Brazilian Wax?

You can get a Brazilian Wax at your nearest Professional Waxing Center. Make sure you go to a certified waxing center that will provide you with a clean and safe waxing experience. Checking local reviews before you book an appointment is an absolute must! Overall if it is not something you have done before it is worth doing at least once to try it out.

I was instructed to remove my pants and lie down on the red waxing table with my knees bent and legs apart. After applying a cleaning solution to my private area, followed by a pre-wax oil (“It creates a light barrier between the skin and the wax,” she explained), I peered over my bent knee to watch her stir the wax until it was hot and ready to be applied on my skin. “This was a good idea,” I kept reassuring myself, as she gently lathered the hot purple wax on to my skin and boy was it hot. I’m no glutton for pain, so I shrieked and winced when she ripped off the initial glob of melted wax.

Unlike waxing eyebrows, chins, and underarms, Brazilian waxing doesn’t require any paper strips. However, the more she waxed, the easier it was to bear the pain because we developed a little system: inhale as the wax is applied to your skin, exhale when it’s time to remove. Christine then applied European Wax Center’s Smooth Me Ingrown Hair Serum to calm the skin down. What felt like a lifetime of agony only turned out to be a 20-minute session, but I’d be lying if I said I would not return. In fact, I already booked my next appointment.

If you, too, are a wax newbie and curious about the procedure, here’s everything you need to know before getting a Brazilian wax.

What is a Brazilian wax, exactly?

There’s a bikini wax, where hair on the sides and top area along the bikini line are removed, and then there’s a Brazilian, which leaves your entire pubic area bare (!). A Brazilian wax removes all the hair from your bikini area (top, sides, and front), and those hard-to-reach areas in the back. Simply put: everything goes. You can opt to leave a “landing strip” or a triangle, choice is up to you.

Does it hurt?

Any procedure that requires removing the hair out of follicles is going to be an unpleasant experience. “The good news is, when you start waxing consistently, what we’re doing is training the hairs to come out at the same time so they can grow in at the same time,” Christine said. “The first time hurts the worst, especially if you’ve been shaving, but once your hair structure starts changing because of waxing, it becomes so much easier and less painful.”

What’s better: Hot wax or strip wax?

“Strip wax adheres to the top layer of the skin as well as the hair. When that comes off, it takes the top layer of skin as well, which is why it’s so painful,” Christie said. “That causes redness, swelling, and irritation, etc. Hard wax, which is what we use, only adheres to the hair, so it’s more gentle for sensitive skin.”

How can you prep for a Brazilian wax?

Pop an ibuprofen before your arrival, I didn’t and felt every rip! “Wear loose-fitting clothes,” Christie suggested. I didn’t. “Also, bringing a new pair of underwear is better than re-wearing the one you’ve been wearing all day.” Also, don’t shave! “When you’re shaving, the hair is cut down to different levels, which makes it harder for the wax to grip. If you shave even once after getting a wax, it’s like starting all over again,” she adds. After a wax, it takes about three to four weeks for hair to grow back.

Can you wax on your period?

While your skin may be super sensitive during this time, you can absolutely wax on your period. “As long as you’re wearing a tampon in because there is more blood flow to that area of your body, the skin will be extremely sensitive, as everything is during your menstrual cycle.

How long does a wax last?

It takes about three to four weeks for your hair to start growing back (this can be longer or shorter, depending on the person). Christine also suggests allowing your hair to grow as least as long as the length of a rice grain before scheduling an appointment.

How do you care for your freshly-shaven skin afterwards?

“It’s important to exfoliate every other day because you need to get that dead skin off the surface or it will get trapped into the hair follicles and block the hair from growing out. This is how ingrown hairs are created,” she said as she applied an ingrown hair serum to my skin. “Avoid any sweaty activities, sun exposure, public pools, or jacuzzi, having sex, and showering with very hot water after getting a wax.”

It’s basically been scientifically proven that life’s best—and worst—moments get even more intense when watched in slow motion. (See all the oddly satisfying/ASMR beauty clips that keep popping up on Instagram, along with every heel-gave-out moment ever.) Keep that in mind when you’re watching this video because we turned the schadenfreude and commiseration volume up to 10 by slowing these women’s reactions to getting a bikini wax for the first time way, way down.

Yeah, it’s slightly weird to watch total strangers get their pubic hair ripped off. (Not gonna sugar coat it: It really reminds us of this story.) But then again it’s also pretty freaking strange that we consider putting hot wax right near our labia a part of personal grooming and not something that happens exclusively in Dante’s deepest, darkest circle of hell.

But because you can only watch so many blackhead extraction videos before needing a change of “I never knew I needed to see this, but I can’t look away” pace, we invite you to investigate the core of human experience by way of 15 women’s reactions to the end of their pubes as they knew them. (Until they grow back, anyway.) At the very least, it absolutely answers the eternal question: “Does getting a bikini wax hurt?” What do you think?

We’ll be straight with you: Getting your first bikini wax is not a fun experience for most people. That said, it’s a longer-lasting method to removing your pubic hair than shaving, with the smoothness from a bikini wax lasting for two to four weeks, rather than days, making it a good option for the summer months, when you don’t want to be constantly reaching for the razor. But being aware of exactly what you’re getting yourself into will help you get through the experience. Below, we outline what a full bikini wax involves and how to prepare for your first bikini wax.

Hairs should be about 1/4 inches long.

A big mistake many women make before their first waxing session: shaving. Wax can’t pick up your hairs when they’re too short, so Queen Bee Salon & Spa owner Jodi Shays recommends trimming it to about a quarter of an inch. If you’re unsure of how long that is, just leave it alone. You can call the spa or salon beforehand and let your waxer know that you will need her to trim your hairs before your wax. For this reason, avoid shaving between waxes.

Determine what kind of style and shape you want beforehand.

Here are a few of your options: A simple bikini wax, which only takes pubic hair off the sides of your bikini line, a Brazilian wax that removes all or nearly all of the hair from front to back, or a full-bush Brazilian style that removes all hair from the vulva and back but keeps a triangle in the front.

The time of the month matters.

“Don’t schedule a wax within three days prior to your period,” says Marta Camkiran, senior esthetician at Haven Spa in New York City. “Your skin tends to be extra sensitive during that time.”

Take a shower that day.

This may seem obvious, but it’s worth a reminder. You’ll feel less self-conscious and your pro will thank you if you suds up at least 24 hours before your bikini waxing session. Even better, taking a warm shower (or bath!) right beforehand opens up your pores, making the actual process less painful. In the days leading up to your appointment, give your body a good scrub with a mild exfoliant, like The Body Shop’s Almond Milk & Honey body scrub, a Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab top pick. Make sure skin is completely dry before waxing, the Beauty Lab suggests, so the wax can adhere; soak up any moisture with baby powder if needed.

Your lower half will be fully exposed.

Before your wax, you will have to strip off your pants and underwear. Some places offer disposable underwear for simple bikini waxes, but if you are having more hair removed than just on the sides, you will likely be completely naked below the waist. The important thing to remember is that your waxer has probably seen hundreds of people’s pubic areas. This is just business for her, so don’t worry too much about exposing yourself.

It will hurt.

There are numerous treatments out there that claim to be “virtually painless” or “totally pain-free.” And some people who have been getting waxed for years, and are therefore desensitized to the pain, have insisted that hair removal “doesn’t hurt at all.” Spoiler alert: It does hurt. Waxes work by sticking to hair, removing it at the root when the wax is pulled off, the GH Beauty Lab explains. Unless you have the thinnest hair on the planet or zero pain receptors (or use a numbing cream, like the below, beforehand!), having hair ripped out of your body can be at least slightly painful.

It hurts some people more than others.

A bikini wax isn’t a walk in the park for anybody, but for some, it’s worse than others. “Coarse and thick body hair is more stubborn to remove, so you may experience more redness in the waxed area,” Marta says.

Your waxer will get up-close and personal. Very personal.

Depending on how much hair you’re having removed, the experience may involve a lot of — for lack of a better term — spreading. In order to give your waxer access to all the spots you’re getting waxed, be aware that you occasionally may need to assist or move into awkward positions.

The hairs left behind may be tweezed.

Oftentimes, there are bikini hairs leftover from the wax that are removed using precise tweezers. Your waxer may ask you if you want them tweezed, or she may just start plucking without letting you know first. It’s a good idea to ask beforehand so you can be prepared.

You’ll look like a plucked chicken afterward.

Post wax, your skin is often red and irritated. Wear loose clothing to your appointment so you’ll be comfy afterwards. For the rest of the day, you should steer clear of applying too much friction (that means skip the sex!), lest you may wind up with even more irritation or ingrown hair in the waxed area. Good news: The redness should go away overnight.

Hydrocortisone cream can soothe your skin.

According to Marta, the fastest way to soothe post-waxing irritation is to apply an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream available at drugstores or on Amazon. “It calms inflammation, quells itchiness and reduces redness,” she says.

Let your skin heal before you hit the beach.

If you’re hoping to be bikini-ready by the end of your appointment, not so fast. Your skin deserves a breather after a bikini wax service. And since you just gave your bikini line a refresh, you might as well do the same with your bathing suit collection, right? Choose from these slimming styles and cheap (but seriously cute!) suits.

It’s safe to say that no one enjoys hair removal. Between the time consumption, the cost, and the pain that can come with getting rid of unwanted body hair, it’d be much easier to simply skip over the process altogether. Alas, wearing a dress without handling your leg hair first isn’t a cute look. If you choose to go with waxing as your preferred method of removal, there are a few things to know before diving in. Below, Noemi Grupenmager, CEO and Founder of Uni K Wax, explains what you need to know about body waxing.

What’s the best way to prevent pain from body waxing (i.e. taking aspirin, numbing cream, etc.)?

Noemi Grupenmager: There is no need to take aspirin or numbing cream, as there are several ways to prevent or minimize pain from body waxing. The first is to hydrate and moisturize the skin before and between waxing to achieve a better hair removal result. Drinking water and applying moisturizer on a daily basis is not only beneficial to your body leading up to a wax, but highly beneficial to your overall health. Also, selecting where to wax plays a large part of how you prevent a painful waxing session. Select a wax center that specializes only in body waxing, they are the true professionals in the waxing industry and have the highest standards in the industry for cleanliness. Also choose a wax that is kind to your skin, an all-natural elastic which is applied at body temperature not only exfoliates as it is gently removed, but it also moisturizes the skin. Uni K Wax is the first in the industry to offer wax centers dedicated only to body waxing, fully trains all waxers in the best waxing methods with an all-natural elastic “ouchless” wax. Your skin will thank you for the choice in waxing centers both pre and post.

Are different types of waxes best for different parts of the body?

If you have a professional waxer, highly trained in using the highest quality of wax, such as a body-temperature wax that is all-natural and the best for your skin, then you can wax any part of your body with little to no discomfort. Everyone has a sensitive area on their body, but through selecting a quality waxing Center, it really does not matter which part of the body you wax, the experience will be the same and pleasant.

Would you ever recommend waxing at home?

Waxing is one “do it yourself” beauty treatment you must leave to the professionals! I believe that a waxing should never be performed at home for many, many reasons. Even most waxers do not wax on their own, they instead let a co-waxer wax them.

How long does a good body wax last?

Waxing is a fairly long-lasting method of hair removal – it can last from 3 to 6 weeks. Better yet, the hair grows back more softer and sparser, not stubbly. If you wax consistently, waxing will change the growth cycle and physiology of your hair follicle. Continued waxing will also cause hair growth to diminish over time. It is the process of weakening the hair follicle with repeated treatment the hair growth reduces.

What should you be doing/not be doing between waxes?

In order to have the best waxing results, make sure that your hair is grown out to about 1/8th to 1/4th of an inch. This is the ideal length for hair to be before getting waxed because it will allow the wax to get a better grip on the hair and be removed directly from the root, rather than just the hair above the skin. If you are transiting between waxing and shaving, avoid shaving after a wax and if your hair is starting to grow, as shaving reverses the effect of waxing. Also, go for a touch up session to keep the skin subtle and hair free. Uni k Wax offer a touch up session for up to 12 days after a wax, especially designed for people doing a transition.

As mentioned above, it is best to also keep your skin healthy and hydrated all of the time. This includes drinking lots of water (to hydrate from the inside out) and using skin care products that prepare the skin for a great hair removal experience. Uni K Wax Centers have developed a complete collection of skin care products including Citrus Body Polish, which should be used about once a week to exfoliate dead skin cells; Body Perfect Dry Oil, which is to be sprayed all over damp skin after a shower each day and Ultimate Balm to seal in the moisture.

Exfoliation is key, however avoid exfoliating one to two days before and after you wax with Uni K Wax Center because our unique wax will also exfoliate your skin. Moisturizing is also necessary to keep your skin soft in between waxing as well. At Uni K Wax Centers, waxing unwanted hair from the face or body begins with a thorough cleansing to the area you want waxed with a natural antiseptic lotion to remove all excess oil and bacteria from the skin, so you don’t have to avoid moisturizers the day of your appointment.

PS: How long should you actually wait between bikini waxes? During the summer, it’s hard to let it grow when you’re always beach-bound!

NG: Totally understand! Your wax should last you anywhere from three to six weeks. But to prepare for the summer, start early to get your hair on a waxing cycle, and continue it year-round. With regular waxing, the length of time between treatments will increase, since the more you wax, the weaker the hair follicle becomes, making it easier to remove hair. If you stop waxing in the winter, you reverse all the work waxing has done for your hair previously. If you’re new to waxing down there and want to make it last, look for a salon that offers a special “touch-up” service, which will be really helpful when transitioning your hair-growth pattern from shaving to waxing. Many customers also come in for a wax and then head straight to the beach; for these customers, we recommend applying a sun cream to the area prior to exposure to the sun.

__PS: What can you do prewax to make the hair come out better?

__NG:__Keep the skin hydrated and healthy. If your skin is too dry, your hair is more prone to breakage at the root when removed. One way is of course to drink lots and lots of water to hydrate from the inside out, as well as using a great moisturizer on the area to be waxed for at least several days prior to your wax service.

__PS: What can you do to make it hurt less?

NG: First, choose the right center: one that uses an all-natural, elastic wax that’s applied at body temperature, as it is gentler on the skin when the hair is removed. Other tips include: Don’t drink alcohol beforehand. It may seem like a good idea, but you will tighten the pores, which will make the hair more difficult to remove. Lastly, stick to your waxing schedule. Once your hair growth is in a pattern, it will be easier to remove, but if you’re not maintaining your waxes, it could be more uncomfortable.

__PS: How can you tell if a salon is sanitary (other than no double dipping)?

NG: You’re usually on the right track if you find a center that focuses solely on hair removal. From the moment you walk into the salon, it should look and smell clean. When you are in the waxing room, the wax to be used specifically for your service should be freshly made and look presentable. Everything the waxer uses during your service should be either highly sanitized or new for your service.

__PS: What can you do postwax to soothe irritated skin?

NG: To soothe irritated skin, apply a cold pack to the area to reduce inflammation and close the pores, then apply a soothing moisturizer. And wear loose clothing on the day of your treatment to prevent from chafing.

__PS: Why do you get itchy down there after a wax? How can you make it stop?

__NG:__Some people are itchy after a bikini wax because they have used a hot, synthetic wax, which irritates the skin. Find a center that uses an all-natural, elastic wax applied at body temperature to never experience the “itchy down-there feeling.”

If you absolutely hate shaving – and the irritating small bumps that often appear after shaving – then you are definitely not alone. Fortunately, there are alternatives to shaving that are more convenient while also providing amazing results. However, one of the most commonly selected forms of hair removal is waxing. Are you using hot wax to remove body hair? Or, have you considered turning to waxing? If so, it is time to reconsider and learn about a much better, healthier, and more effective method – sugaring.

The Disadvantages of Waxing in Birmingham AL

When it comes to waxing, there are several disadvantages. First, waxing can damage your skin, specifically fine tissue cells. Second, most waxes are not natural and contain chemicals. Third, waxing is painful and less effective. When you choose waxing hair removal, you are opting for a method that involves putting hot wax onto your skin. The hot wax can not only burn and bruise your skin, but the heat also results in swelling of your tissues, which makes hair removal more difficult. Aside from the heat, pain, and irritation, waxing also removes hair in the opposite direction of hair growth. As a result, the process typically results in 15 – 35% hair breakage that is left behind. All of that pain and there is still hair there? Finally, waxing requires that your hair is at least ¼ inch long before removal. Fortunately, there is a better alternative that can lead to permanent hair removal.

Choose Sugaring in Birmingham for the Best Hair Removal

Fortunately, there is a much better solution to hair removal that has all of the benefits of waxing without the drawbacks! Unlike waxing, sugaring is applied at a lukewarm temperature – no more burns or scarring. Plus, hair is removed in the natural direction of growth. This removal process not only significantly reduces the pain and irritation, but also helps the hair to remain intact throughout the removal process (less breakage? Sign me up!). Furthermore, the sugaring paste is 100% natural (even edible). Goodbye chemicals, hello beautiful, smooth skin! Finally, sugaring can remove hair that is only 1/16 of an inch long! That’s right, no more waiting weeks after shaving to remove the unwanted hair. As a result of the ability to remove really short hair, permanent hair removal in an all-natural way is no longer a thing of the past. So why are you paying someone for waxing in Birmingham AL? If so, it’s time to stop. There is a much better option that is better for your skin and is far more effective and less painful! Check out our FAQ page to learn more about sugaring hair removal. Which Is Better for Brazilian Waxing: Hard Wax or Soft Wax?

Most times it is because it involves a very private area, but some other times it is because people wonder about the right types of wax to get a Brazilian: hard body waxes or soft body waxes. clients, especially first-timers, have a huge curiosity for this topic since they don’t want to risk their skin in such a delicate area, and they want their Brazilian to go as smoothly as possible.
Sometimes the debate between these two types of waxes for a Brazilian boils down to individual choice, the rest is the esthetician’s call. You don’t need to worry, though. Your esthetician has got everything covered! The first thing you need to know is that a professional knows exactly how to work around a Brazilian and use either soft or hard wax at ease; no wonder why going to a professional is always your best bet.
In this blog post, we will let you know about both types of wax and how they are used for flawless Brazilians. Hint: like everything else, both have their pros and cons.
What Exactly Is a Brazilian —And How Is It Different from a Bikini Waxing? The history of Brazilians goes back to its self-explanatory origin: the beautiful Brazilian beaches where women wore skimpy bikinis —for which they had to brace themselves and sit through thorough waxing sessions that removed ALL hair in and around the public area, including the labia and the backside! This was a departure from the modest bikini waxing, which aimed at removing only any hair that would peek out of a pair of undies or a swimsuit (mostly in the inner thigh area, with some trimming on the mons pubis). Bikini waxing was the way to go until the J Sisters, a group of Brazilian estheticians introduced their Brazilians to a growing number of enthusiasts upon their moving to New York.

As you can see, Brazilians deal with much more delicate areas than Bikinis. However, the techniques to work on these different areas should be roughly the same. Any difference will depend on individual characteristics, such as coarseness of the hair and strength of the root (some clients have very stubborn hair follicles!).
What Exactly Is Hard Wax?Hard or stripless wax has a thick consistency. It hardens on the skin after applied, but it retains a malleable consistency that allows skipping the use of muslin strips. Hard wax acts as a strip that the esthetician can just rip off without other aids. This type of wax melts at a lower temperature, so it is a lot more comfortable on the skin.
What Exactly Is Soft Wax?The name says it all: soft wax has higher malleability, so it covers any area regardless of how difficult it is. Soft wax does not stick to the skin, only the hair. Muslin strips are necessary to rip hair with this type of wax, which melts at a higher temperature (still not as high as to burn the skin).
How Does Each Type if Wax Behave in Brazilians and Bikinis?
Hard Wax
Brazilians: hard wax allows for reapplication, which will come in handy with girls with very coarse hair and strong hair roots. Your esthetician will probably choose hard wax if she considers that she will have to go over the same area more than once.
However, hard wax can have one downside: it adheres not only to the hair but also to the skin. This can cause extra tugging on the soft tissue in the nether areas when the esthetician flicks one corner of the wax in order to pull and remove hair. A licensed esthetician knows that the best technique involves small areas at a time and swift pulling motions.
Bikinis: the inner thigh area can be quite sensitive as well, but overall, hard wax is a good idea for this type of waxing. It provides very fast and clean results.
Soft Wax
Brazilians: soft wax can provide fast results with minimum tugging provided that the technique is done properly: spreading a thin layer of wax, pressuring the muslin strip down, and pulling it in one swift, horizontal motion.
The number one thing to keep in mind with soft wax for a Brazilian is that this type of wax does not allow re-application. When an esthetician does not have enough experience to ensure an exact application and ripping technique, the client can experience extra pain since skin layers can end up being removed.
Girls with coarse hair can benefit from soft wax, again, provided that the technique is optimal.
Bikinis: soft wax is fine for trimmed bikini lines, but it depends on individual preference.
The Bottom LineIt all comes down to technique, experience, and individual choice. Your esthetician will know whether to use hard or soft wax according to your type of hair and the degree of confidence they have using a specific type of wax. Some estheticians and clients are used to hard body waxes for Brazilians, whereas others swear by soft body waxes. Hard body waxes tend to be more popular, but as you can see, soft wax can be wonderful as well.

Don’t miss these other must read articlesSteve Mason/Getty In the last several years, waxing has become a common (and popular) service offered at salons and spas. Whether it’s the eyebrow, upper lip, armpit or, well, someplace more intimate, many people choose waxing for longer-lasting hair removal. But to those who’ve never done it (or who’ve done it once and had a bad experience), it can seem a bit daunting. If you’re thinking about giving waxing a try, we’ve spoken to the experts and gotten the inside scoop on everything from preparation and pain to what kind of results to expect, so you can be well prepared when it comes time to take it all off—your hair, that is.

Who Should Wax
Waxing is a great alternative to shaving if you have hair you’re uncomfortable with, says Cornelia Zicu, chief creative officer at the Elizabeth Arden: Red Door Spas. “Waxing is recommended for people of all ages and both genders.” Though she recommends that people start getting wax treatments at a young age, when the hair is fine and will be less painful to remove, anyone can get it done, regardless of age.

Waxing vs. Shaving
“Waxing is better because it removes from the root,” says Janea Padilha, cofounder of the J. Sisters Salon in New York City and author of Brazilian Sexy. She adds that when you shave “you just cut the hair, so two hours later, you can see the hair there or the blue shadow (the hair follicle below the skin).” Waxing, on the other hand, not only can last up to a month, but it’s also much more permanent—over time it thins the hair so less grows back. Bonus: It exfoliates the skin as well, leaving you feeling silky smooth.

Preparing for a Wax
If you’re worried about pain, take one or two Advil an hour before your appointment. “We also recommend an exfoliating scrub the day before and advise not to apply body lotion the day of the wax,” Zicu says. Also, for underarm waxing, she recommends you use deodorant without antiperspirant because it comes off easier.

How Often to Wax
If you’ve shaven recently, wait five days. And though the time does vary between waxes, depending on how quickly or coarsely the hair grows back, Padilha says it’s best to wait around a month. “People should wait three to four weeks between waxing,” she says. “But in an emergency, if they have a new boyfriend or are about to go on vacation, they can come back in three weeks with no problem.”

What to Expect
First your waxer will clean and disinfect the area. After that, she’ll apply the wax and remove small areas of hair at a time. “There are two different types of wax,” Zicu says. “Soft wax is done with paper or muslin strips, and hard wax is removed without strips.” In general, hard wax is used to remove hair in the bikini, underarm and face area; soft wax is used on larger areas of the body such as the leg or armpit. Afterwards, she’ll remove any wax residue and apply cream.

The Pain Factor
Waxing is uncomfortable because the hair is being pulled all the way out. “If the roots are not pulled out, the discomfort is minimal but the results are also minimal,” Zicu says. She adds that “discomfort is only at the time of service and stops immediately after.” To be sure it’s done right, you may want to check the strips to ensure the roots were also removed (you should see a small dark bulb on the hair follicle).

Post-Wax Treatment
Although the pain does subside as soon as the wax is over, the area can remain sensitive, which is why Zicu says not to use any scrubs for the next 48 hours and not to expose the area to direct sun for at least 24 hours. To treat redness or swelling, apply a small amount of cortisone cream from the drugstore.

Maintenance
After the tenderness has subsided, Padilha says to exfoliate in the shower to remove dead skin so the pores don’t become clogged, causing ingrown hairs and bumps. If bumps do appear, “don’t squeeze or tweeze!” she urges.

Waxing Hygiene
First and foremost, make sure you go to a place with proper sterilization procedures. Zicu insists, “The technician should be licensed and she should not double-dip during the waxing session.” (Double dipping means that the technician used the same stick each time she dipped into the vat of hot wax. This practice contaminates the wax and allows bacteria to spread from one client to another. Plus, you wouldn’t want the wax used on your upper lip to have been mixed with a stick used on another woman’s bikini area.)

The Bikini Wax
There are special concerns when waxing the bikini area, but they’re very similar to those for the rest of the body, according to Padilha. She popularized the Brazilian-style bikini wax at her spa in 1994, “before anybody knew what it was,” she says. “But now that people do know, the bikini area is the most common part of the body I wax.”

Bikini vs. Brazilian
A Brazilian wax removes more hair than a bikini wax. Whereas a bikini focuses on the front and sides (what would be visible in a swimsuit), the Brazilian removes the front, sides, back and everything in between, often only leaving a strip of hair in the front—or none at all. Most of the time, you can leave your underwear on during a standard bikini wax, but for a Brazilian, you’ll have to be sans panties.

Why Brazilian?
Some reasons for having a Brazilian wax include cleanliness, convenience and, of course, sexiness. “I always say men are my biggest clients,” Padilha notes. But it’s not just about sex. “When you sit at the beach or pool in your bathing suit, you feel so good, so comfortable because you don’t have to worry about it .”

Does It Hurt More?
“Some women can’t do the bikini, but they are OK with the eyebrow. Others can do the bikini, but they can’t stand to wax their legs,” Padilha says. “Everyone is different. But it does hurt less the longer you do it. Eventually the hair becomes weak, so it doesn’t hurt at all.”

Does It Matter What Time of the Month It Is?
According to Padilha, waxing hurts more the week before your period, so it’s best to go in the week after. And if you’re pregnant? “Just like always, some days we are a little more sensitive than others,” she says. “So if you’re pregnant, it’s fine. It doesn’t hurt more.” Otherwise, she says, it’s just about being comfortable. “The first time clients are scared. Not because of the pain, but because they’re embarrassed. But after they’ve gotten one, forget about it!”

Hard Wax vs. Soft Wax: A Beginner’s Guide to Body Waxing

Goodbye stubble, hello smooth skin! Are you stuck in between hard wax vs. soft wax? Let’s learn a little more about the two kinds of wax, including their pros and cons. All the good, the bad, and the nasty waxing stories of screeching women (and men) have been around that long. Luckily, now, we have advanced with state-of-the-art waxing systems for a better hair-pulling experience.

Why Are There’s More Than One Type Of Body Waxing?

The two depilatory waxes are similar except one does a more delicate job than the other. They both offer the longer time before you begin to see some hairs poking through your skin. As you noticed not all hairs, grow the same length, size, and texture in different areas of our body.

Basically, hard wax needs time to cool and harden before applying it to the skin. The soft wax, however, is removed almost immediately, after pressing the strip tightly to your hairy skin.

Hard Wax

It’s the stripless wax type intended for fine body hairs. Ideally used for hairs found on smaller parts, particularly the facial hair. The ears, upper lips, eyebrows, as well the intimate areas like bikini lines. The thick wax only clings to the hair, not the skin reducing discomfort. If you have sensitive skin, hard wax is your friend.

Unlike the soft wax, applying hard wax doesn’t require special skill to use. It cools when it touches the skin and encapsulates the strands of hair as it hardens. Which is why you only need a thin layer, —enough to grab the hairs when you pull the wax off. Meaning, you can’t use it cold or at room temperature.

Soft Wax

The soft wax is a traditional body waxing offered in heated, cold, or in pre-made strips. It removes ugly hairs on the legs, arms, and other more extensive areas of the skin. You need to use a spatula in applying the wax before using a muslin strip to remove it. So, expect it to be a bit intimidating to use and potentially not so pleasant experience.

Believe it or not, soft wax is excellent for Brazilian waxing. Why? The strands down there is much coarser than the hairs on the legs or arms. Soft wax is capable of
taking off every hair strand growing from different directions from the labia to the rear. If you’re a rookie, have a professional do it as it requires swift pulling motions.

What Exactly Are They Made Of?

The soft wax and hard wax are both resin-based waxes, made of ‘rosin’ which is a type of natural resin extracted from coniferous plants, primarily pine trees. It’s just the main ingredient, others are made with synthetic rosin due to potential allergic reactions to the skin. While soft wax is often a mix of rosin and beeswax.

The premium versions offer the optimal texture and are blended with natural ingredients that help soothe and moisturize skin. Such as aloe vera, cocoa butter, green tea extract, chamomile, and fruit extracts are more than just fragrances. It’s a bonus feature that makes waxing an easier task for many people.

Hard Wax Beans, — Do They Work?

Coarse chest hair and on the legs would be first to come in mind when you think of hard wax. A top brand like Fèmiro Hard Wax Beans by NaturalRays works really well even on sensitive areas! Plus, it doesn’t smell strange, who wants a bad chemical smell? What makes this brand so popular is it doesn’t scare off beginners with how
easy it is to use, compared to the most hair wax warmer kits.

Another brand that does a pretty good job focusing on coarse body hairs is Blue Bikini Babe by KoluaWax. It’s made from carnauba palm wax, a native in Brazil, and then formed into beads that melts quickly and pulls off unwanted stubborn hair cleanly. Both brands do not dry super fast which allows you time to carefully apply it.

How Hard Wax Beans Are Better Than Other Waxing Methods?

Let’s begin with this question, whenever we think or talk about a perfect hairless skin, what comes to mind? Painful waxing, right? Sure, the hard wax strips can suck your spirit out of you because of the pain, but it makes hair grow slower. And yet, most of us still say ‘no’ to the unpleasant wax strips.

On the other hand, waxing creams may seem a lot more convenient as it saves you from potentially getting more than just goosebumps. Albeit, regular use of such creams can cost more money since the hair grows back too soon, —even thicker! Thus, in some cases, it causes black patches which can be super annoying.

— Is there an in between?

Picking between hard wax vs. soft wax can be tough. The most significant outcome is the hard wax beans. Also known as hard wax pellets or beads. With the more sensitive skin-friendly formula, it makes the hard wax beans suitable for all skin types. Still, a technique is done correctly in using either of the waxes is optimal.

Hard Wax Pros

  • Gentler than soft wax (less painful) in moving hair
  • Easier to cleanup by opening the hair follicles and pores with its heat
  • Adheres on shorter hair strands (as short as 1/16 of an inch) in a single go

Hard Wax Cons

  • Pricey compared to soft wax
  • This wax needs to be always warmed up
  • It works with larger skin areas but not as efficient
  • Can burn the skin of those who are temperature sensitive

Soft Wax Pain Factor

Soft wax or strip wax is a fav for salon use despite being a lot less painless compared to its counterpart. We urge to hand it over a pro if you’re a beginner because if you have no experience, it can result in extra pain since skin layers can end up being removed. But hey, you can only feel the discomfort right when the hair is pulled all the way out. It stops immediately after.

As mentioned, pros recommend the use of soft wax for the bikini area. Understandably, most might imagine “it sounds painful. “Among the many brands that even include pre-made wax strips, we recommend Natural Azulene Soft Wax by Sharonelle because this stuff, by comparison, is fantastic for sensitive skin.

Another favorite brand in the waxing industry is Essential Rosin Wax Oil, Lavender by Depileve. This clear soft wax contains soothing lavender extract which helps lessen the pain with its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Although this is not formulated for sensitive skin, it has good reviews of being non-irritating to the skin.

Soft Wax In Three Ways

Heated: These are the types you find inside cute heating pots. Some are put in anti-rust aluminum jars that you can warm by placing the tin can above a lighted candle. Or you may use a warmer to soften it. This way, you can safely heat it at the right temperature.

Cold: Convenient because you can easily scoop it out the pot and spread it to the skin. Although, it might be a challenge to get a thin layer on evenly due to its firmer consistency. Albeit, unlike heated, cold wax tend to hurt more and may leave few hairs behind.

Strips: Well-measured wax attached on strips of cloth that works like ‘plug n play’ to the skin. Rubbing them between your palms to warm it up before applying it makes it more effective in removing unwanted hair.

What To Look For In A Body Wax?

❏ 100% natural (Yes, it should meet all material safety standards)
❏ Safe for sensitive areas
❏ It melts quickly and evenly
❏ Effectively grabs all the hair in a single swoop
❏ Doesn’t crack and comes off quickly in one piece
❏ Doesn’t dry super fast
❏ Leaves less to no sticky residue behind (hard wax)
❏ Minimal to no chemical smell
❏ Enriched with soothing ingredients
❏ Fair price

Soft Wax Pros

  • No waiting time in between application
  • Can exfoliate as it strips the top layer of dead skin
  • It provides fast results with minimum tugging
  • Friendlier price

Soft Wax Cons

  • It adheres to skin more than hard wax, which can be painful
  • You can’t wax the same area twice (again it strips off layers of dead skin.)
  • It can leave some residue that may be tough to remove.
  • Might cause some ingrown hairs

Bottom line

It solely depends on how your skin responds to a particular type of wax during and after application. One wax may work better for some people than others, as well as some areas of the body. If you have sensitive skin and have low pain tolerance, you might go for the hard wax as it lowers the chance of severe irritation.
