Gaullier’s study involved 180 overweight men and women, all between 25 and 30 BMI (body mass index). A BMI — an indicator of body fat — over 25 has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease and other medical problems, such as diabetes. The volunteers were mostly female — 149 women and 31 men.

They were randomly assigned to three groups. The two groups taking CLA got either the typical off-the-shelf pills (4.5 grams of 80% CLA) daily or the syrup formulation (3.6 grams of 76% CLA disguised in a capsule) daily. The third group took a placebo capsule filled with olive oil daily.

Volunteers were not required to change their diet or exercise habits. However, a nurse did give dietary and exercise advice upon request. Daily calorie intake was similar among the three groups; all volunteers reduced their calorie intake a little during the study, he reports. All got about the same amount of exercise.

“This strongly suggests that the observed effects of CLA on body composition were independent of diet,” he writes. The decreased calorie intake may be partly due to the supplements and/or a reduced appetite. Also, because volunteers kept a food diary, they “learned” to cut food intake.

Several times during the 12-month study period, volunteers came to a clinic to have their weight, BMI, and blood checked. They also completed questionnaires on their diet and exercise in the previous two weeks.

At the end of one year:

  • Both CLA groups lost weight — about 4 pounds; the placebo group stayed the same.

But a growing number of American dieters who take nutritional supplements containing the fatty acid CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) believe this latest weight-loss trend has real substance. They have found that, when used in conjunction with a regimented plan of diet and exercise, CLA not only reduces body fat but also increases muscle strength and exercise endurance. Now science has stepped in to explore CLA’s too-good-to-be-true health claims — and CLA has stood up to the skeptics.

CLA is related to the omega-6 fatty acids, one of the two types of essential fatty acids that help the body increase metabolic rates, boost the immune system and keep cholesterol levels in check. CLA is found in dairy and animal fats, such as beef, lamb, whole milk, and eggs, but cannot be produced by the human body.

Interest in CLA began in the late 1980s when Michael W. Pariza, a professor in the Department of Food Microbiology and Toxicology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, discovered an isolated agent in fried hamburger that reduced the incidence of cancer in mice. A few years later his team unmasked the mystery element: a chemical form of linoleic acid they called conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA.

CLA reduced body fat and preserved muscle tissue in overweight or obese people who did not change their diet.

This discovery set off a slew of studies. While these studies examined different variables and came up with varying conclusions, the one consistent finding was that CLA helps people lose body fat. Among the research most cited is a Norwegian study published in The Journal of Nutrition in 2000. It found that CLA reduced body fat and preserved muscle tissue in overweight or obese people who did not change their diet. According to the research project manager, individuals in the CLA group lost six more pounds of body fat, on average, compared to those in the placebo group.

Another study in The Journal of Internal Medicine Research said that CLA reduced body fat in healthy exercising humans of normal body weight. Research in the International Journal of Obesity showed that CLA reduced abdominal fat in obese men, and Louisiana State University scientists showed up to an 88 percent reduction in the body fat of male mice who were fed CLA over a period of six weeks.

CLA reduces body fat by increasing basal metabolic rates. In other words, it helps the body convert food more efficiently into energy. CLA doesn’t decrease overall body weight; rather, as Pariza told the American Chemical Society, “it keeps a little fat cell from getting bigger.” This can alter the body’s fat-to-muscle ratio. In one study, Pariza found that those who stopped dieting and did not take CLA eventually put weight back on in a typical manner – about 75 percent fat to 25 percent muscle. Participants who stopped dieting, but kept taking CLA, also gained weight, but at a 50-50 fat-to-muscle ratio.

CLA’s purported benefits extend well beyond a more slender waist. Further studies suggest that in addition to increasing muscle strength and exercise endurance, CLA can have an impact on specific diseases and ailments. Dr. Delbert Dorscheid, a cancer and asthma researcher on the faculty in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Chicago, reviewed more than 200 published research and clinical studies worldwide on CLA’s health benefits. Among the findings was that women with increased levels of CLA in their body tissue have lower breast-cancer rates. Similar findings have been reported for colon and prostate cancer. And the health benefits don’t stop there: CLA has been linked to improved immune system function, as well as a decrease in cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and even allergies.

Pariza is careful to point out that CLA research is still in its infant stage. “Some of these findings are better documented than others,” he says. “CLA has a potent inhibitory effect on body-fat accumulation, but its effects on muscle are not conclusive. In animal models CLA reduces some but not all forms of cancer; dietary CLA is particularly effective in inhibiting breast cancer in rodents. However, some things, such as how it affects diabetes, have not been proven.”

Even if CLA doesn’t turn out to be a miracle cure for cancer, odds are that it will continue to be a very popular dietary supplement.

Can CLA help you? It might, if you know how to use it. Most of the studies conclude that a person needs to take 3.4 grams of CLA (3,400 mg) daily to receive its benefits. (The amounts used in many of the studies were two to three times higher, but the treatment period was only 12 weeks.) And where you get those 3.4 grams is up for debate. According to Peter W. Studies at the University of Wisconsin indicate that CLA dietary consumption may have dropped as much as 80 percent in the last two decades.

But even if you resolve to gulp down several glasses of whole milk each day, you probably won’t be getting enough CLA. Changes in livestock feeding practices over the last 50 years have largely removed naturally occurring CLA from our diet. Larry D. Satter, Ph.D., an agricultural research dairy scientist at the U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center in Madison, Wis., recently conducted a study comparing the amount of CLA in milk from cows grazing on pasture to the amount from cows fed hay or silage – the fermented feedstuff stored in silos. Satter found that pasture-grazing cows had 500 percent more CLA in their milk than those fed silage. According to Satter, “This is true even when the non-grazers eat pasture grass conserved as hay.” CLA levels in pasture-raised beef have also been found to be higher than those in the meats of grain-fed cattle.

How to Take CLA

The good news is that the days of CLA-light milk may be numbered. University of Alberta, Canada, researchers have announced that they are working to develop milk that contains higher levels of CLA by adding oils, such as canola, safflower, linseed or flaxseed to the animals’ diet. There is a patent pending on the formulation.

Until then Pariza says that supplements are the healthiest way to get CLA because they are manufactured to contain a specific balance of biologically active CLA isomers (chemical compounds). “In foods where CLA occurs naturally, like beef and dairy, the CLA is associated with the fat. To get sufficient CLA you would have to eat a lot of fat.”

Are all CLA supplements the same? Not really. Each brand usually has different amounts of active CLA. Since the various formulas contain a percentage of other oils as ingredients, you need to calculate how much each supplement is delivering to make sure you’re getting your full 3.4 grams. If a capsule contains 75 percent CLA, and it’s 1,000 mg, you are receiving 750 mg of CLA, and you need five per day to reach the recommended 3.4 grams. The most common type of CLA used in research is a patented formulation called Tonalin. Tonalin can be found in a number of brands, such as Natrol, Jarrow Formulas and Nature’s Way.

Many people have found it best to take CLA supplements before or with meals. Side effects are rare but may include nausea or upset stomach. These can be reduced, though, when the supplements are taken with protein, such as low-fat milk. People who report side effects say they usually subside after about two weeks. To date, there appear to be no health risks or serious side affects associated with CLA supplementation.

One interesting study showed that supplementing CLA together with olive oil kept the benefits, but prevented the insulin resistance seen from CLA supplementation alone! Builds (and maintains) strong bones

Another advantage of CLA comes from its bone-strengthening and protective effects. Dietary CLA significantly prevents losses in bone density by both increasing the body’s signals to absorb calcium (parathyroid hormone and calcitriol), as well as reducing the activity of osteoclasts, the cells responsible for eating away at your bones when calcium is low. Animals need real grass and greens in their diets to make CLA, so it’s important to go for grass-fed sources. A four-ounce serving of grass-fed beef contains around 433 mg of CLA, while grass-fed whole milk contains up to 240 mg. Grass-fed dairy products and pastured eggs are excellent vegetarian sources of CLA.

How much should I take?

While most of the effective human trials studying CLA gave participants between three to four grams daily, there isn’t yet a consensus on the best dosage for your diet. On average, non-vegetarian men and women on a standard American diet (SAD) consume 152 and 212 mg daily, although studies show this isn’t enough to bring the benefits. With all these amazing findings, CLA supplements are also gaining popularity. Most of the studies on CLA use direct supplements rather than whole foods; after all, if you feed someone grass-fed beef, how could you know if their outcome is due to CLA, or another of its beneficial compounds?

Outside of the lab, whole food sources are your safest route for dietary CLA, since most supplements are made from processing unhealthy vegetable oils such as safflower or sunflower oils. Plus, who doesn’t like an excuse for more butter?

    Many people use CLA supplements, believing that they have benefits for weight loss and heart health. The evidence is mixed, however, and many of the studies involve animals instead of humans. Consequently, the research is not yet clear about the exact health benefits of CLA.

    The following sections discuss the possible benefits of CLA and what the current research suggests.

    Weight loss

    According to the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), “CLA may help you lose a very small amount of weight and body fat.”

    A 2015 review paper states that CLA plays a major role in breaking down fats in the body. This may be why people believe CLA can help with weight loss.

    While many studies have shown substantial weight loss in animals, a 2015 review study says that these results do not necessarily apply to humans.

    Several studies show that CLA promotes slight weight loss when researchers compare it with placebo groups. However, these examples say that the evidence is inconsistent across the studies.


    There are no studies looking at the effects of CLA on bodybuilding specifically. A 2015 review of available research suggests that the benefits of taking CLA supplements alongside exercising vary.

    The researchers, however, do include several studies that showed CLA supplements could reduce body fat and improve lean body mass, which is the ratio of fat to body weight.

    In one study, participants who took 1.8 mg of CLA for 12 weeks and went to the gym for 90 minutes three times per week reduced their body fat but not their body weight when the researchers compared them with a placebo group. The authors said that CLA might reduce fat deposition.

    Weight loss but with fewer benefits?

    Recent studies have questioned whether CLA-induced weight loss has the same benefits as traditional methods of weight loss, the latter being calorie restriction and exercise.

    One 2017 study compared two groups of obese mice with characteristics of human metabolic syndrome. To test weight loss, the researchers gave the first group of animals CLA supplements while putting the second group on a calorie-restriction diet.

    The scientists studied the physical changes between the two groups. Both groups lost equal amounts of weight, though they had different physical changes:

    • The mice that took CLA supplements lost subcutaneous fat, which is a protective, healthy form of fat, without losing harmful visceral fat.
    • The calorie restriction group improved markers of diabetes, such as reduced fasting blood glucose levels, while the CLA group did not. This makes sense as visceral fat is a major contributor to insulin resistance.

    The study concluded that calorie restriction was a healthier form of weight loss than taking CLA supplements.

    Heart health

    Atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, is when plaque builds up in the arteries. This is a risk factor for heart disease.

    One 2018 study on obese mice suggested that taking CLA supplements could protect against atherosclerosis.

    However, researchers need to do further studies before they know the true effects of CLA on atherosclerosis in humans.

    CLA: Fat Loss And Muscle Gain

    CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) is a naturally occurring fatty acid, similar to an omega-6 fatty acid but with health benefits for skin and weight loss. It’s one of the “good fats,” present in foods such as beef and dairy products, but only in low levels. Ironically, beef and dairy products are the same foods that are also high in what we think of as “bad fats,” or saturated fats, so obtaining enough CLA through diet alone is problematic.

    Also ironically, even though CLA is a fat, studies show that 1.4-3.0 grams per day of CLA will lead to overall body-fat loss.1,2

    And yet, to get that much CLA into your system naturally, you’d have to consume upwards of 2 pounds of beef, a pound of cheese, or 100 ounces of milk every day!

    Increased consumption of CLA doesn’t have to come from dairy products or beef, however, as the benefits of CLA can be achieved through supplementation.

    Why is CLA Good?

    It might seem weird that a fatty acid could help reduce body fat while increasing lean muscle mass, but that’s what the science suggests!3

    While technically a trans fat, CLA is naturally represented in our food sources and is different than industrial-produced trans fats, such as vegetable oil. Like many naturally occurring agents, CLA has an organic, meaningful place in our diet.

    Can CLA Help Me Lose Weight?

    Even though conjugated linoleic acid is a trans fat, there’s a purpose for this one! Specifically, CLA helps reduce the urge for unneeded food intake and inhibits the production of additional fats. Basically, CLA is a special type of fat that takes the place of our need for other, unhealthy fats.

    CLA hardwires us to stay lean and clean, helping us to burn the calories that already exist, instead of craving additional calories that serve no purpose.

    A recent study investigating the effect of 4.2 grams of CLA per day in 53 healthy individuals showed a significant decrease (3.8 percent) in body fat compared with individuals not taking CLA.

    An additional study in obese and overweight populations demonstrated that at least 3.4 grams of CLA per day for a period of 12 weeks was actually necessary to see a significant reduction in body fat.2 In other words, without CLA intake there was no significant fat loss!

    What are the Benefits of CLA for Training?

    One trial, monitoring the benefits of CLA supplementation on muscle development, showed that consuming 7.2 grams of CLA per day, when accompanied by a bodybuilding regimen, led to an increase in skin-fold corrected arm girth, leg press gains, and overall body mass, as compared to a placebo group which performed the same routine without CLA.5

    Are There Additional Benefits of CLA?

    Research shows there are also CLA benefits for skin health, in addition to the benefits for weight loss. Because of this, CLA has been added to a number of popular skincare products.

    But you don’t have to buy those products to get the benefits of CLA, so long as you’re already supplementing with it.

    Why Don’t I Have Enough CLA Already?

    Many people already consume a lot of beef and dairy products, so it would make sense to think that the amount of CLA in their bodies should be enough to get by on.

    Unfortunately, meat and milk production have changed over the years. Industrialized meat that is not grass-fed contains far less CLA than grass-fed meat, while dairy products from non-grass-fed cows also have less CLA in them than the dairy products from grass-fed cows.6

    How Should I Take CLA?

    As with any supplement, some types of CLA, especially if not taken as recommended, may be difficult for the liver to process. CLA might also create an imbalance in breast milk fats, so it’s recommended that nursing mothers put off CLA supplementation until their child is beyond nursing age.

    Other than that, taking CLA is simple: Capsules of a CLA supplement, in the manufacturer’s recommended doses, should be ingested slightly before or during a meal. The stimulant-free capsules stack well with other products.
