Pole dance pole buying guide

Thinking about buying a pole dance pole for your home? There are quite a few options available and these can be confusing, so we’ve put together this quick guide to help make choosing the ideal pole for you easier.

Firstly, consider what brand of pole you want. There are a number of poles out there, and we’ve tested lots of them. If you want to use your pole for more than just show then we recommend X-Pole – these are the poles used by professionals worldwide, in most pole studios and competitions. The build quality is superb, being safe and stable with a range of options to suit everyone. Beware of cheap ‘stripper’ poles – these are rarely suitable for pole fitness or heavy use.

Special Offer: Buy an X-Pole from Pole Motion and we’ll send you a free £15 gift card to use on your next purchase from PoleMotion.com!

Permanent or Portable:

All X-Poles are portable and can be put up and taken down whenever you like. This gives you the flexibility to dismantle your pole and take it to a friend’s house to practice or if you need the space when you have visitors. If you have a spare room or permanent space for your pole and would prefer the added security of it being screwed to the ceiling then you could try a pleasure pole.

Size:

Poles come in three diameters – 50mm, 45mm and 40mm. If in doubt, go for 45mm as this is the new industry standard and the size found in most studios and at pole dancing competitions. If you have a small grip then you may find a 40mm pole more comfortable when gripping the pole. Many pole studios now have all sizes of poles and when learning some of the harder moves the 40mm can make it easier to grip and feel more confident in the move before being ready to try it on the 45mm or 50mm.

Both the X-Pole Sport and Xpert models come ready for room heights between 2235mm (7’ 4”) to 2745mm (9″), for higher ceilings you can buy extension tubes to increase the pole height.

Type – spinning or static:

There are two distinct types of pole – spinning and static. Static poles are fixed and don’t rotate. These are ideal for beginners and are slightly lower cost than spinning poles. Spinning poles are the best of both worlds as they can be set to rotate and also be fixed in position like a static pole. This allows for more advanced moves which you may want to perform as you become more experienced with pole dancing.

The X-Pole Sport is a static pole, the X-Pole Xpert is a spinning pole.

Coating:

There are different pole finishes with varying level of grip and it is down to personal preference which is the right one for you.

Chrome is the most common finish that you’ll find on poles, and chrome poles have the chrome/silver appearance that most people expect from a pole. It also gives a good grip, so is ideal for beginners.

An alternative titanium-gold coated pole is also available, some people prefer this as it provides more grip but it does add a premium to the price. The titanium-gold poles are gold in colour.

Stainless Steel is also used to make some poles, but is not as grippy as other coatings, so not as suited for beginners.

Many pole dancers also use grip products like Dry Hands or Might Grip if they are having problems gripping when practicing moves, but this is not advised to use all the time as you need to practice and build up your natural grip strength.

Where and how to install your pole:

Fitting your pole is much easier than you may expect. The X-pole Sport and Xpert models can be easily assembled and disassembled in just a few minutes and don’t need any permanent fixings, so you don’t need to leave them up all the time if you have limited space and they won’t damage your ceilings or floors. X-poles come with a great installation guide and they have also produced an online video showing the installation process.

X-poles are bottom loading (the weight is held by the floor, not the ceiling) and can be used on almost all floor types, even carpet. When fitting your pole you need to ensure that the top plate is against a ceiling joist so that the pole is securely braced. You can locate a joist by tapping the ceiling and listening for the change from a hollow noise to a solid one – the solid area is where the joist is. You can also use a stud-finder, available from most DIY stores.

No ladder is needed to install the pole (once you know where your joists are) as the X-pole adjuster system lets you adjust the pole height from the bottom, so that it’s the correct height for your room.

Both the X-Pole Sport and Xpert models come ready for room heights between 2235mm (7’ 4”) to 2745mm (9″), for higher ceilings you can buy extension tubes to increase the pole height.

You need to allow enough space around the pole for you to comfortably perform your moves, so the centre of the room is usually the most suitable spot.

Why You Should Take a Pole Dancing Class

Corbis Images

Like many female forms of dance, pole dancing has had a fraught history of seedy clubs and leering men-a reputation that often chases would-be dancers away. But aficionados are bringing it out of the shadows and into fitness studios to show women how empowering and fun it can be to twist, twirl, and (oh yes!) be sexy, all while getting a fantastic workout. So when Why I Dance, a film that’s now gone viral, asked pole dancers to share why they love the sport (“Because I love my body.” “Because it’s a killer workout.” “Because it makes me feel happy.”), the only surprising thing was what wasn’t on the list: There was absolutely nothing about how their moves make it rain dollar bills.

“Pole dancing accomplishes so many things at once. Not only is it an incredible core and upper-body strength builder, it is also sexually liberating, emotionally cathartic, a form of expression, and an exploration of self,” says Amy Main, co-producer on the film and self-proclaimed fitness fanatic. “It’s the most transformative type of fitness I’ve ever experienced. And I’ve never been so in love with my body and curves!” (Try 5 Classes You Should Take Outside of the Gym.)

Pole dancing is also a feminist act, says co-producer Sascha Alexander. She, with fellow pole instructors Main, Julia Roth, and Melanie Zoey Weinstein, decided to make the film not just to promote their favorite sport but also to help women reclaim their bodies, sexual power, and freedom. After seeing the sport help women in their local studios, the four instructors wanted to spread the message to even more women. “We were inspired to create the film when we realized that our experiences had massive potential resonance to the world around us and to the feminist movement on a global level,” Alexander explains.

But not everyone feels so comfortable mixing workout time and sexy time. To those who worry about being “too sexy”, Weinstein, the film’s director, says that learning to let go can be one of the most valuable lessons you take away from a pole class (after how to keep yourself from falling on your head, of course).

“The phrase itself implies that there is such a thing as ‘being too sexy’ and that it’s something to worry about. This line of thinking is crazy. It’s designed to instill fear, to pit women against each other, to make women play small,” she says. “It’s like saying ‘Whoops, I woke up sexy again this morning. Better do something about that sexy that keeps cropping up. I must need a product to help me put all that sexy away.'”

In addition to better balance, coordination, and arms to rival Michelle Obama’s, another major benefit of pole dancing is the body confidence it brings, says Roth. Learning to trust your body and remembering how much fun it is to just play are two core principles of dancing. “We teach women: Don’t be afraid to get messy. Love that mess. Love anything your body reveals to you. Trust yourself. Be wild!” she adds. (Give it a go with Olivia Wilde’s Crazy-Fun Dance Workout.)

But perhaps the best part of pole dancing as a workout is that women of all shapes, sizes, and fitness levels are encouraged and welcomed, say the filmmakers. “Let’s light up the world with our beautiful, courageous, wholesome, sexy selves,” says Weinstein, “exactly as we are.” Check out Why I Dance for yourself, below.

Learn Pole Dancing at Home

This post was last updated on September 26th, 2019

So, you want to learn pole dancing at home, but aren’t sure where to start? Learning to pole dance at home is ideal if you don’t have anywhere local offering pole fitness lessons. Or, you may lack the confidence to attend lessons and would prefer to learn in a more private environment.

Learning something at home is the most convenient way to learn at your own pace. If you have a busy lifestyle, job, or family then it can be hard to find the time to commit to a series of pole dancing classes. By choosing to learn at home, you can do so in your own time.

You can take as much time as you want to practice and review moves. If you’re in a gym or a public class, you may not have enough time to spend practising a particular move as the instructor may have a lesson plan to stick to. By learning at home, you control what you do during a practice session.

Learning pole dancing at home is less expensive than classes consider how much you learn for the price if you choose to purchase DVDs or online lessons.

Pole fitness lessons may cost $20-$30 per time, and you should attend once a week to really feel the benefit. The instructor will set the pace of the lessons and choose which tricks to teach you and in what order. In The Art Of Pole DVD, for example, you learn well over 50 moves for around $120, whereas a $120 spent at a pole class would teach you fewer moves.

It can be extremely good value to purchase online lessons too.

Here is our complete guide on how to learn pole dancing at home. If you find this guide useful, don’t forget to share it with your friends on social media!

Is Learning Pole Dancing at Home right for you?

First of all, you need to decide whether learning pole dancing at home is right for you. Consider your previous fitness experience, if you’re completely new to this form of exercise then you may benefit from attending a class, even if it’s just to learn the basics first.

In just a few lessons you can learn the basics with a qualified instructor by your side. It’s hugely beneficial if you can get a grasp of the basics, such as:

  • Climbing the pole
  • Different types of grip
  • Sitting on the pole
  • Spinning to the floor
  • Basic invert techniques

Once you learn these techniques, then learning pole dancing at home is a great idea for you to save money on regular pole dance lessons. You don’t have to completely nail all of these tricks, but you should have a good understanding of how to safely perform these techniques.

Also, what about your living situation? Is your home suitable for you to install a portable dance pole easily?

You’ll need to make sure that you have enough floor and ceiling space to get the most from your workouts and to adequately performs certain tricks and spins that need more space than others.

Choose a Dance Pole Suitable for Home Use

Once you’ve decided that learning pole dancing from home is right for you, then next thing you’ll need is a pole to dance one! We’ve written multiple guides on this topic so to avoid repeating ourselves…

Always Put Safety First

Safety is the most important thing when you’re trying a new form of exercise. Pole dancing is no exception.

You should make sure that you have plenty of space around your pole, to ensure that you won’t knock or kick anything during your workout session.

If you stand between the pole and the nearest wall, you should be able to stretch your arms out as wide as they go without touching the pole or the wall.

During a pole fitness session, you can literally be swinging around the pole! So, you need to be confident that you can do so safely at home!

Assess Your Space

Many pole dancers manage to use a dance pole at home without the ideal amount of space, and they do so successfully. However, some moves and combos cannot be performed in smaller spaces, although it is possible to adapt your routines according to the space around you. As a beginner, it is better to be able to move as freely as possible so try your best to make space around you.

This could mean pushing your furniture up against the wall or moving any delicate objects out of the way.

If possible, always have a spotter with you when you attempt moves for the first time

Always use a crash mat designed for pole dancing as they can protect you from some nasty falls and injuries. As you’ll be learning pole dancing at home, and not in a studio, it’s important that you take these extra precautions as there will be no one to blame but yourself if the unthinkable happens. Read our safety guide for pole dancing at home (opens in a new tab).

Find the Right Clothes

If you’re learning to pole dance at home, there’s no one to impress apart from yourself! There’s no need to spend hundreds of dollars on new pole dancing clothes right away.

You will need shorts, a tank top and a sports bra at least. Shoes are optional, many people pole dance barefoot while others wear huge stripper heels every time! Yoga shoes are also perfect for pole dancing, especially for beginners.

As you progress with your pole dancing, you’ll likely want to buy yourself new clothes, fancy shorts, legwarmers, and beautiful new outfits! But, as a brand new beginner, you can stick to shorts and a tank top – but the choice is yours!

Online Pole Fitness Lessons

Believe it or not, one of the best ways to learn pole dancing at home is with Online Pole Fitness Lessons.

Learning pole dancing at home using online lessons is perfect if you don’t have time to commit to a full course of pole dancing classes, or if there are no classes available in your local area.

Obviously, learning pole dancing online has a lack of real-time instruction and advice. You may not realize that your technique may be completely wrong, but there’s no one there to correct you. Repeatedly performing a move incorrectly can also lead to injuries and muscle strain over time, so try to seek advice from a professional instructor where ever possible and don’t attempt anything that doesn’t feel right.

There are some very high-quality online pole dancing lessons available right now, where the instructors go over each move in great detail, talk through technique and points of contact, explain common problems with different tricks and provide motivation through their instructions.

Here are some of the range of online pole fitness lessons available at the moment:

The Art Of Pole by Jamilla Deville

This was the first Pole Dancing DVD I ever used, and it’s absolutely brilliant – I still refer to it very often. This DVD set contains five DVDs, each one increasing in difficulty. There is even a routine at the end of each DVD featuring all of the moves covered, which is a really nice touch.

These really are excellent instructional videos by Jamilla Deville, and there are some warm-up and cooldown routines too. This even includes routines performed beautifully by Jamilla wearing some beautiful costumes for inspiration.

Pole dancing is quickly becoming a hit among women as it’s a fun, healthy, and sexy exercise they can do to achieve a fit and toned body. The best thing about it is that it can be performed at the comfort of your home, whenever you want to, as long as you have a dance pole available.

Online Resources Learn Pole Dancing at home

Table of Contents

An even better news is that you can start learning about pole dancing just by watching video tutorials on YouTube or any other video hosting website.

Try looking for Tara Katarina. Also known as the vertical ballerina, her videos are some of the most followed pole dancing tutorials in the online scene. Her channel has several video tutorials that are easy to follow, making it ideal even for beginners to learn the basics just through their computer.

Free Online Stripper Pole Dance Tutorials

Aside from saving you a lot of money, online video tutorials offer several advantages over physically attending a formal class. For one, there’s ample amount of video tutorials the internet has to offer and almost all of them are free. From warm-ups and cooling down videos to complex dance moves, there are also additional strengthening exercises and tutorials on achieving smoother floor transitions.

There’s so much resource material available out there that you can just watch at home.
Dont be afraid to scour youtube and buy pole dancing DVDs to learn more. It offers a collection of dancing routines and moves for beginners and advanced pole dancers. The channel mainly focuses on beginners but lessons for intermediate level pole dancers will also be included soon.

These are just some of the channels about pole dancing that are popular online. There are other channels out there you can explore, giving you a wider option of which among them to follow.

From Beginners, intermediate to advanced

Most videos are suited for beginners who want to learn more about the basics before moving on to the next levels. Many tutorials teach basic moves like the angel spin, standing spin, pole climbing techniques and exercises, and variations of the fireman move. Recordings of performances of professional pole dancers are also available for the more experienced dancers.

However, all the things you watch on these videos will be for nothing if you don’t have your own dance pole at home. It’s best if you have a dance pole ready when you’re watching a video so you can immediately apply what you’ve seen on the video tutorials. Muscle memory plays a significant role in this setup.

If you want to maximize the potential online video tutorials bring to the table, make sure you’ve properly installed either a fixed pole or a removable dance pole you can use to practice your routine. Even if you don’t attend classes with a personal trainer, you can still learn the same techniques through these videos.

There are many brilliant pole dancing performers and coaches out there who want to share their talent for free by making instructional videos available to the public. YouTube offers the largest collection but you may try other websites and blogs about pole dancing to get more resources. Once you’ve found an online coach that you’re comfortable with, you can now start swinging and sliding on that pole.
