“Simon doesn’t expect Demi to be supermodel skinny, but he does want her to look like she’s in shape,” a source tells Star Magazine. “He’s set a weight-loss goal of 20 lbs. for Demi and asked her to work hard on it through the spring and summer.”
Weaves are about to be snatched. The good-ish news? Simon is “very supportive” of the fact that Demi has a history of eating disorders, and wants her to lose the weight naturally. In fact, Star’s source reports that he’s “going above and beyond to make sure she loses weight in a healthy way.”

Demi Lovato’s new YouTube documentary, Simply Complicated, is out now, and in it, she gets super candid about living with an eating disorder.

Demi says simply that food is “still the biggest challenge in my life” and revealed that she struggled with disordered eating as recently as this year after her breakup from longtime boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama.

“When I was in a relationship with Wilmer I went three years without purging and when we broke up that’s one of the first things I did,” she says in the documentary. “The less I have to think about food, the easier it is to go about having a normal life and I don’t want to let anybody down so when I do have moments when I slip up, I feel very ashamed.”

Demi says her relapse started when she began missing Wilmer. “And when I feel lonely, my heart feels hungry and I end up bingeing,” she says. Demi traced her issues with eating back to her childhood, noting that she first began bingeing when she was 8, after her little sister was born and she felt like less attention was on her.

“I had started working at that time and was under a lot of stress so I would bake cookies for my family and I would eat all of them and nobody would have any to eat,” she says. “That was my first memory of food being that medicine for me.”

Say No to Dieting, and Yes to Self-Awareness
“Not everybody who goes on a diet develops an eating disorder, but pretty much everyone who has an eating disorder has some experience with dieting and restrictions,” says Mysko. “, which is so validated in our culture to the point of it almost being expected, can be a really dangerous trigger.” Of course, everyone is different, allowing for a variety of instances—from the ongoing tick of social media to the slow buildup to a holiday or special occasion, such as your wedding—to easily set off impulses in recovering individuals. Keeping a journal, talking with friends, or keeping a weekly date with a therapist you connect with are ways to remain mindful during a particularly stressful period or time of transition, such as the new year. “Learn to take the time to slow down and learn that all of the madness around body and weight is all about managing feelings,” says Meader. Whatever the culprit, the sooner you can recognize that a pattern is starting to take over your life, the more effective the solution is going to be.

As with most mental health issues, recovering from an eating disorder, such as bulimia or anorexia, is an ongoing process with ups and downs, Claire Mysko, CEO of the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), tells SELF.

“It’s important to remember that recovery is not a straight line, and it can be complicated. There are going to be difficult days,” she says. Struggling with your body image and eating habits, like Lovato describes here, are a couple of the most commonly lingering symptoms of an eating disorder during recovery, according to NEDA. “It can be a real challenge trying to develop a healthier relationship with yourself and with your body,” Mysko says, “especially when you do have those moments of insecurity.”

For many people in recovery from an eating disorder (or dealing with body image issues), severely limiting their diet only generates more shame and anxiety about food and weight on a daily basis.

“When you’re making certain foods off-limits or setting yourself up so that the level of restriction is making you feel deprived and interrupting your ability to enjoy life, engage with others, feel good about yourself, that’s a major ,” Mysko says. “That restriction can often trigger cycles of disordered eating.”

She had been on a bender right before, using alcohol and drugs almost daily (including Adderall and cocaine) and was forced to check into a rehab facility after she punched one of her backup dancers in the face for telling management about her drug use.

It took another stint in rehab for Lovato to get sober.

One demon she hasn’t fully figured out is her eating disorder. She still struggles with bingeing and purging, and admits in the documentary that she recently relapsed. While she says “it’s still weird” to discuss these intimate details of her life in front of a camera, she does, explaining that she binges “when her heart feels hungry.”

One thing that has helped the singer overcome some of her health challenges is exercise.

According to her manager, Phil McIntyre, there was a time when nobody could discuss exercise in front of the star. Now she’s working towards getting her black belt in Brazilian jujitsu. Lovato says that without the gym, she would “be in a very dark place.”

The power of staying fit

Exercise has been known to heal the body and soul and Lovato certainly agrees.

“Any time I’m able to take my mind off any of my addictions, it’s very beneficial to me because you’re constantly thinking about what the next move is. The technique, the strategy…Working out is a form of meditation to me because I’m not focused on anything in my head. It can transport you to a totally different place. Demi Lovato has had an amazing year. With the release of her new album, performances all over the world, and a more dedicated fanbase than ever, Lovato is on top. But it hasn’t always been so easy. The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer has had a long journey to success with lots of struggles along the way, and she’s not afraid to admit it. In her new documentary, Simply Complicated, Demi Lovato opens up about her eating disorder and her many struggles with it, and it’s so, so brave and heartbreaking. The 25-year-old Grammy nominee took to her Instagram story on Tuesday, Oct. 17 to share before and after photos of her personal struggles with an eating disorder to kickstart the release of her documentary.

Lovato has been honest and open about her issues with binging and purging, which started in her youth and took over her life. In Simply Complicated, Lovato shares stories of loneliness, depression, addiction, and hardship with body issues throughout her life.

Lovato explained to her manager,

When I feel lonely, my heart feels hungry and then I end up binging and I don’t know how to figure out how to be alone. One thing that I haven’t fully conquered is my eating disorder.

In the documentary, Lovato also admitted to her nutritionist, “Food is still the biggest challenge in my life. It’s something that I’m constantly thinking about.”

The former Disney star bravely discussed the importance of honesty and openness with personal battles. She shared her complicated relationship with food and said,

I would bake cookies for my family and I would eat all of them and nobody would have any to eat. That was my first memory of food being that medicine for me. Body image, what I’m going to eat next, what I wish I could be eating, what I wish I didn’t eat. It’s just constant. Like I get envious toward people that don’t struggle with an eating disorder just because I feel like my life would be so much easier.

Lovato also admitted to her difficult past with drugs and alcohol. She remarked,

My first time doing coke, I was 17 working on Disney Channel, and I was with a couple of friends and they introduced me to it. I was scared because my mom always told me that your heart could just burst if you do it. But I did it anyways and I loved it. I felt out of control with the coke the first time that I did it. Lovato is laying it all out there, and fans everywhere are applauding her for it. The documentary is also incredibly eye-opening and inspiring. It’s proof Lovato has been through it all, and is still charging full speed ahead. Lovato also opened up about her bipolar disorder and her difficulty dealing with it. She said,

I was 18 when I first went into treatment. When I got diagnosed with bipolar disorder, it just made sense. When I was younger I didn’t know why I would stay up so late writing and playing music, and then I learned about episodes of mania and I realized that’s probably what it was. I was manic. In a way, I knew that it wasn’t my fault anymore. Something was actually off with me.

April 19, 2011 — — She’s the best friend a generation has grown up with — 18-year-old Demi Lovato is the Disney darling with the winning smile. She sang her way to the top of the pop charts and heights of wholesome teen icon status.

Yet Lovato’s natural outward confidence in front of the camera could not protect her from the inner, lasting effects of childhood bullying. She sat down with ABC News’ Robin Roberts to share her story of a lifetime of struggles. (View photos of Demi Lovato through the years.)

“I’ve spoken openly about being bullied throughout the past few years, but one thing that I’ve never been able to feel comfortable talking about was the effects that it had on my life, afterwards,” she said. “I literally didn’t know why they were being so mean to me. And when I would ask them why, they would just say, ‘Well, you’re fat.”

Her torment turned into a dangerous habit.

“I developed an eating disorder, and that’s kind of what I’ve been dealing with ever since,” she said.

Lovato began a lifelong struggle with bulimia and alternately, severely restricting her eating.

“I was compulsively overeating when I was eight years old,” she said. “So, I guess, for the past 10 years I’ve had a really unhealthy relationship with food.”

Her family helped her find professional help for her food issues. But there was a secret battle she fought alone, something she desperately hid from everyone: At age 11, Lovato began cutting herself — intentionally self-mutilating her wrists as a way of coping with emotions.

“It was a way of expressing my own shame, of myself, on my own body,” she told Roberts. “I was matching the inside to the outside. And there were some times where my emotions were just so built up, I didn’t know what to do. The only way that I could get instant gratification was through an immediate release on myself.”

It was a dangerous coping mechanism that continued throughout her teen years. Last summer, it all came to a boiling point during her concert tour with the Jonas Brothers for the Disney Channel musical, “Camp Rock 2.” Disney is the parent company of ABC News.

“I was performing concerts on an empty stomach,” she said. “I was losing my voice from purging. I was self-medicating. I was not taking medication for depression, and I literally was so emotionally whacked out that I took it out on someone that meant a lot to me.”

Demi Lovato Takes ‘100 Percent, Full Responsibility’

Lovato admitted to physically striking one of her backup dancers, Alex Welch, during the South American leg of their international tour.

“I take 100 percent, full responsibility.” Lovato told Roberts. “I feel horrible. was my friend.”

Lovato’s family and management team held an intervention.

“They sat me down and said, ‘You can’t live like this,'” Lovato said.

She immediately quit the tour and checked in to Timberline Knolls — a residential treatment center in Illinois for women battling addiction and eating disorders.

While in treatment, Lovato learned to alter her coping skills and found better ways to deal with her emotions.

“For the first time in my life, I started to feel,” she said.

During the tough times in treatment, Lovato says it was the thought of her younger sister, Madison, who plays Juanita Solis, the daughter of Gabrielle on “Desperate Housewives,” that got her through her darkest hours.

“A picture of my little sister, on my little bulletin board, was one of the main things that kept me going,” she said. “I just kept thinking, ‘OK, set this example for your little sister.'”

Lovato wanted to set an example — not only for Madison, but for all the other women fighting the same issues.

“The real reason why I’m sitting down with you,” she said, “is to open up the eyes of so many young girls, that it doesn’t have to be this way.”

Everybody loves a good story. We love to watch celebrities spiral out of control and pick themselves back up again. It’s a hopeful, humanizing narrative that brings even the furthest away of celebrities closer, affirming that they’re “just like us”—they struggle like we do. They surrender like we do. They recover like we do.

But when the layers are peeled back, Demi Lovato’s truest story—told through her new doc Simply Complicated (released Oct. 17)—may not be the comfortable narrative that we want to hear. The story of Lovato as a survivor, as someone who’s overcome her addictions and left them in her past, is easy to swallow. We cling to this miraculous, reborn image of a pop star, who once punched her backup dancer in a cocaine-infused rage and now celebrates five years of sobriety. But it’s rarely that simple.

That’s especially true when it comes to Lovato’s relationship with food. While the majority of Simply Complicated hinges on her disturbing history of cocaine addiction and alcohol abuse, the story of her eating disorder—which dates back to when she was eight years old—is told quietly in the background.

The doc makes some things tragically apparent: Lovato is still haunted by food, she continues to relapse and nobody really knows how to talk about it. Time and time again, we see that her team is clearly unsure about what they can do, beyond offering an empathetic ear. She’s performing, she’s recording, she looks healthy, so is there really a problem? We understand eating disorders as something we can see, so when we’re presented photos of an emaciated Lovato circa 2011 compared to 2017’s toned, muscular Lovato—images that were mercilessly shared by publications last week—we understand her as recovered. But eating disorders are more than skin deep.


We haven’t been taught to talk about eating disorders as true issues of mental health. Plus, women are constantly confronted with conflicting mantras: on one hand, we’re commanded to strive for perfection, and on the other, encouraged to confidently reject it. So how do you talk about an eating disorder when you want to be a role model of positive self-esteem, as Lovato does? To be honest… You don’t. Near the end of Simply Complicated, Lovato confesses to a bulimia relapse, and it’s obvious how difficult it is for her: “It’s so hard to talk about this on camera,” she says. “When I do have moments when I slip up, I feel very ashamed.”

But there’s another issue at play here, and that’s Lovato’s image. We can’t accept her as an addict—a young woman struggling with addiction, lashing out at her team and performing on American Idol hungover isn’t very #Disney. But we can swallow her bulimia with ease. A young woman struggling with an eating disorder? That’s manageable, easily hidden… and, unfortunately, still quite normal.

That’s because eating disorders are an accepted symptom of a sick society that demands women look a certain way, often at the expense of our mental and physical health. We accept Kardashians selling laxative-laden weight-loss teas as health foods and not as self-destructive weapons. We know what some supermodels do to themselves weeks before a runway show, and we turn a blind eye in the name of fashion. And in Lovato’s case—as with many money-making stars battling addiction—we learn that the team around her waited for rock bottom before doing anything about it.

Lovato’s documentary doesn’t necessarily have a happy ending, but that’s what makes it so impactful. It makes the important point that addictions and disorders don’t just end. They get easier, but the demons don’t always disappear. That’s why knowing that her struggle with food isn’t over is integral to understanding her story. Because we understand the dynamic between a drug and an addict, but food is a whole other ballgame. It’s a part of life we require to survive; a substance that we use to celebrate, to medicate, to connect with others and to keep ourselves alive. But it can also be used as a form of punishment, a source of guilt and, unfortunately, the ultimate form of self-control.

Simply Complicated is revealing in what it can’t really say. Lovato can’t tell us she’s entirely recovered. She can’t look at the screen and speak of eating disorder recovery with the same ferocity she does her former cocaine addiction. We get to rejoice in her substance sobriety, but we also are faced with the reality that recovery, whether it’s from addiction or an eating disorder, is not linear and often not final. And it’s certainly never perfect.

That’s why this story, her story, is so important. It’s real, it’s raw and it subtly exposes the crippling nature of disordered eating as something even harder to shake than drug addiction. Simply Complicated is heartbreaking, but hopeful in its openness. And sometimes, we need the truth more than we need a happy ending.
