Does the Apple Cider Vinegar Detox Drink Work? This is What Doctors Say

Is fermented apple juice as good as they say? Some warn it’s dangerous to drink. Others claim it cured all their diseases and changed their life for the better. It’s frequently used on skin, teeth, and as a detoxing agent — but should it be?

Whether you’re boarding the apple cider vinegar train because your favorite celebrity posted about it on Instagram or you’ve just heard it’s good for you, it may not produce the results you’re expecting — at least, not for the reasons you’ve been told.

What is an apple cider vinegar detox?

Apple cider vinegar is a mixture of apple cider, yeast, and bacteria. You can buy it in stores or online as a premade drink or in its raw form.

People tend to mix raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with distilled water and a natural sweetener such as honey when preparing it themselves. You should never drink it without diluting in some way — it’s so acidic that it can damage your teeth even when you add water.

It has recently become one of the most popular ways to detox or cleanse the body — though the practice isn’t new. It’s widely believed that the vitamins, minerals, bacteria, and enzymes present in apple cider vinegar can rid the body of toxins.

The studies that have been conducted relating to apple cider vinegar and weight loss or improved health markers involved small groups of people or animals. Conclusions drawn from these studies should not be generalized to entire human populations. You can’t say that apple cider vinegar promotes weight loss because it worked in a few rats.

Researchers haven’t looked into apple cider vinegar as an effective detox method. Most of the information supporting its effectiveness is what we call anecdotal evidence — the “my sister’s best friend’s cousin’s boss tried it and it worked for her” mentality. This type of evidence is not proof.

Detox drinks: Do they really remove toxins from your body?

A detox or cleanse supposedly filters out harmful toxins from the body through fasting, liquids, supplements, and more extreme methods (e.g., enemas). Apple cider vinegar detoxes, for example, use the drink to “reset” the body and fill it with nutrients. Or they claim to, anyway.

Researchers have yet to find evidence that detox diets or cleanses accomplish what they claim to accomplish. This is mainly because your body naturally filters out and removes toxins through excretions like sweat and urine. Your liver, in fact, exists solely to detoxify substances and help get rid of them.

But if detoxes don’t actually detoxify you, then why do so many people swear by them? It’s likely that elimination diets that remove processed foods promote overall feelings of wellness, weight loss, and more. That has nothing to do with your supplement, enema, or apple cider vinegar.

Do apple cider vinegar detoxes work?

The answer to that question depends on your end goal. Some people use apple cider vinegar to “feel better.” Others use it for weight loss.

There is no scientific evidence that proves humans need or can benefit from apple cider vinegar in terms of trying to rid their bodies of toxins. Our bodies don’t need apple cider vinegar to achieve some advanced form of cleanliness. We sweat. We pee. We have livers. Biologically, that’s good enough.

  • Those who report feeling more energized after an apple cider vinegar detox probably feel that way because they are consuming previously missing vitamins/minerals or have eliminated processed foods from their diet.
  • No studies have shown that weight loss is sustainable or realistic due to apple cider vinegar detoxes. Losing weight quickly on a detox is likely due to fluid loss. There is no guarantee that that water weight won’t come springing back.
  • It’s possible to “overdose” on apple cider vinegar. It’s unsafe to assume that drinking or eating more of something “because it’s good for you” will provide more health benefits. Drinking too much apple cider vinegar can bother your stomach and increase your appetite.

All this doesn’t mean apple cider vinegar can’t benefit some people in different ways. Used properly, it can benefit your skin, help control blood sugar, and keep your immune system healthy.

Several tablespoons — at most — per day is more than enough, if you feel you need it. Don’t expect it to perform any miracles, though.

What is the link between Apple cider vinegar and weight loss

Lots have emails have been rolling into my inbox lately regarding how to lose weight and get rid of that dreaded stomach fat. Drinking apple cider vinegar diluted with water and eating a low carb, high protein (not always fully high fat) diet usually does the trick! It is also the breakdown of eating at the right times during the day and what foods are combined that help speed up the metabolism and break down foods.

I personally try to drink this apple cider vinegar weight loss drink up to 3 times a day or fill a large 32-ounce mason jar full and sip up to two of them during the day. This recipe is included with all my detox drinks and I am providing a few alternative ways here to make it taste fabulous.

An Apple Cider Vinegar Cleanse Gave Me Abs…and an Awful Stomach Ache

The reported benefits of apple cider vinegar range from helping you lose weight, protecting your heart, preventing cancer, and even banishing bad breath. So when I saw a fitness influencer attribute an ACV cleanse to her killer abs, I broke the one diet rule I’ve always kept and tried a fad diet prescribed on social media.

My Pursuit for a Six-Pack

I always thought that diets shared by fitness influencers on Instagram tend to come across as shady and inauthentic, but when my by BFF sent me the Instagram post below, I forgot all about that skepticism. The post talked about a cleanse to eliminate bloat, help digestion issues, and get those much-coveted obliques. I was game.

I figured I didn’t have anything to lose-the ingredients are “real” food and ACV was having a moment. I’d seen other fitness peeps snap shots of gallon jugs, talking about their own concoctions. So, I committed to giving it a try.

Day 1: I’m just gonna say it: The shake tasted disgusting. I didn’t even finish the whole serving. I drank what I could first thing in the morning when I woke up. I ate regularly at work and did an extra-long endurance run in the evening. I also worked in a few new abs exercises into my workouts. After all, this cleanse was about to give me abs, right? The post also recommended a magnesium supplement at night, so I took one after dinner.

Day 2: The shake still tasted sour (IDK why I was surprised about that; there’s vinegar in it), but I managed to down the whole thing and felt kickass for it. The only major change was-warning: TMI ahead-that I went to the bathroom more than usual that day. Otherwise, I ate regularly again, went for a shorter run and did some weight lifting after work, and popped another magnesium pill. Day two of the cleanse, check.

Day 3: The taste of the drink got better (or I was getting used to it). I spent decent time in the bathroom again, which debloated me and made my stomach flat. I felt less hungry throughout the day and didn’t feel a surge of early-afternoon fatigue like a normally do. Later, after I completed an endurance run at the gym, I lifted up my shirt, looked in the mirror, and…there they were-abs! Yes, legitimate abs (a first for me). At home, I piled my plate high with veggies and took another magnesium supplement.

Day 4: The shake was tolerable, but I felt queasy in the morning, and I wasn’t very hungry at lunch. I decided to take a rest day from my workouts. I completed my day with another round of magnesium, but little did I know this was the beginning of the end of my temporary abs.

Day 5: My stomach felt terrible. I dealt with a nauseous, acidic stomach all day. I tried to do my long run, but my stomach wouldn’t allow it. I still took my magnesium pill with dinner.

Day 6-7: I woke up with the worst stomach ache I’ve ever had. I hesitantly made the shake and told myself I was almost done and maybe this was just part of the process. The post suggested trying the cleanse for at least 7 days. (I know now that I should have listened to my body.)

Day 8: No shake, no magnesium pill, continued stomach ache, and fading abs. This cleanse ended on a(nother) sour note.

The Truth Behind the Fad

So, sure, I got abs, kinda, and for a day or so, but the side effects were obviously not worth that mini reward. I knew I’d never do it again. I was curious about whether my circumstances were abnormal, or if there was actually some secret abs-sculpting benefits to an apple cider vinegar cleanse that I just missed somehow. So I talked to Jessica Crandall, R.D.N., a certified diabetes educator. Crandall says she’s never prescribed ACV to any of her clients, and she doesn’t see that changing anytime soon.

“Because it tastes nasty, it might curb your appetite,” says Crandall. “But it’s just a diet fad.”

The other ingredients in the cleanse fared a little better from Crandall’s expert point of view, though. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties; blueberries are high in fiber and antioxidants; lemon juice is high in vitamin C; and spinach is a great source of vitamin K (and boosts your fitness performance). The magnesium in the evening helps relax your muscles and blood vessels and (ironically) helps normalize your bowel movements. All good stuff, “but nothing in there will give you six-pack abs,” says Crandall. In fact, she tells me that the acidity of the ACV may have been too much for my stomach to handle, which makes a lot of sense considering my frequent bathroom breaks and tossy-turny stomach.

So besides some obvious dehydration, to what does she attribute my day-long abs? Simply put, being aware of my goal and my diet. In theory, people who follow an influencer or fitness figure who suggests a diet, food, or detox will likely “eat something healthy they otherwise wouldn’t and it kickstarts other habits like trying new exercises or eating better,” hypothesizes Crandall. It’s true. Remember, I did start doing a few new abs exercises during the cleanse.

Lessons Learned: Abs Just Aren’t Worth It

Stay skeptical of words like detox and cleanse. While some may have their benefits, most are nothing more than fluff. Regardless, the moral of the story here to is listen to your body. I should have known something was up when I could barely stomach the first shake on day 1, or at least on day 4 when I was so queasy. Next time, I’ll listen to my gut (pun intended).

What is the apple cider vinegar detox?

The body has its own detox systems, including the kidneys and liver, which help it to remove waste products efficiently. Some of the things that people eat and drink can support or interfere with the body’s natural detoxification process.

Some of the available research on ACV is detailed below.

Weight loss

A 2009 study from Japan found that consuming vinegar resulted in weight loss in animals. However, it is not clear if ACV would act the same way in humans.

An older study from 2007 may help explain any weight loss effects associated with ACV intake. In the study, 10 people with type 1 diabetes were given a serving of pudding with either a cup of water or water that contained 2 tablespoons (tbsp) of ACV.

The group given the ACV had slower rates of gastric emptying (the rate at which food moves from the stomach to the small intestine). This can help people feel fuller for longer, which may reduce total food intake, thus aiding weight loss.

Effects on cholesterol

The 2009 study mentioned above also tracked cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Triglycerides are a type of fatty acid found in the blood. From the study’s fourth week, the animals displayed reduced triglyceride levels – but this may have been a natural effect of the weight loss.

Research on cholesterol and ACV in humans is very limited. An Iranian study suggests that ACV may reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglycerides in people who have high cholesterol. However, the number of people studied was very small and so more extensive studies would be needed to validate these findings.

Blood sugar regulation

Drinking ACV with food may help manage blood sugar. Typically, eating a meal high in carbohydrates causes blood sugar levels to spike. However, when researchers gave people with pre-diabetes, diabetes, or neither, less than 1 ounce (oz) of ACV to drink with a high-carb meal, it was found that all three groups experienced more stable blood glucose levels when compared with those who had a placebo drink.

Another study carried out on people with type 2 diabetes examined the effects of ACV on blood sugar when given with a bedtime snack. Participants who took 2 tbsp of ACV with a cheese snack experienced significantly lower blood sugar levels upon waking. Researchers believe that the acetic acid in the ACV slows down the rate at which the body turns carbohydrates into sugar.

If you believe the hype on Instagram, apple cider vinegar, or ACV as fans refer to it, is a cure-all for acne, dandruff, and sunburns. Some research even suggests that drinking apple cider vinegar can help you lose weight, which is why people are adding it to tea, smoothies, or just drinking it solo. It’s also popular in sauces and dressings.

But can a shot of apple cider vinegar actually help you burn fat? We asked the experts to find out what you should know:

What is apple cider vinegar?

It’s nothing more than apple cider with yeast added to start the fermentation process. It’s most often taken by adding two tablespoons to water, although some people take it as a shot. A single tablespoon of apple cider vinegar only contains three calories, meaning there’s no need to worry about drinking excess calories .

What are the side effects of apple cider vinegar?

As with most things, it’s best to consume apple cider vinegar in moderation, as too much may damage your teeth and bones, according to case reports.

Take this cautionary tale as one example: A 28-year-old woman was diagnosed with low potassium and osteoporosis due to her ACV consumption. She visited the hospital complaining of cramps, and doctors discovered she had low potassium and fragile bones. They believe she lost bone mass because of high acid levels caused from drinking 8 ounces of vinegar every day.

Diabetics should also use caution when taking apple cider vinegar as it could lower blood sugar levels, according to WebMD. And certain medications, like insulin, Digoxin (used to treat heart problems), and diuretic drugs may interact negatively with ACV.

The science behind apple cider vinegar and weight loss

© spukkato/Getty Images There is some evidence that acetic acid can be good for weight loss, since it targets body fat, explains Carol Johnston, Ph.D., R.D., associate director of the nutrition program at Arizona State University, who has done extensive research on the subject. When you consume small amounts of acetic acid through apple cider vinegar, it activates your metabolism to help your body use fat as a form of energy rather than storing it, Johnston says.

In one study, obese rats that were fed high-fat diets lost a significant amount of body fat when acetic acid was added to their food. In another study published in the journal Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry, people lost an average of four pounds in 12 weeks after consuming one to two tablespoons of diluted apple cider vinegar daily.

The acetic acid in vinegar can be beneficial in other ways, since it suppress appetite, says Johnston. Apple cider vinegar has been shown to be most effective when paired with a diet full of starchy foods, as the acid slows down the digestion of starch. This could potentially assist dieters, because slow digestion keeps you feeling fuller, longer.

There’s also some evidence that drinking apple cider vinegar before a starchy meal keeps your blood sugars stable, making you less likely to crave sweet snacks.

But does apple cider vinegar actually work to help you lose weight?

Johnston says it’s worth trying — provided you’re not looking for immediate results. “Vinegar is not a magic bullet for weight loss. I have seen very modest weight loss in my studies, of one to two pounds after 12 weeks,” she explained to the Washington Post.

If you eat whole foods with a high starch content, like potatoes or rice, you can try making apple cider vinegar a daily precursor to your meals. There is no official recommended dosage, since the research on apple cider vinegar use is limited, but Johnston recommends mixing one to two tablespoons with eight ounces of water to drink before meal time. (Be careful not to add any more — because it contains acetic acid, drinking a ton of ACV could cause esophagus burns or erode tooth enamel.)

Additionally, there’s a lot of hype on health blogs and messages boards about unpasteurized vinegars, which still contain the lump of bacteria and yeast (the “mother”) that forms during the fermentation process. While most brands filter the mass out, others include it, believing it could enhance apple cider vinegar’s health benefits; but no studies have supported this idea.

What’s the best type of apple cider vinegar?

Numerous brands sell ACV, and one isn’t more beneficial than another. Generally, you’ll want to choose a bottle labeled raw and unfiltered because they contain protein and healthy bacteria, Prevention reported.

To sum up: Apple cider vinegar is not a magical weight loss solution, and experts agree you’re much better off changing your diet and exercise routine than taking shots of vinegar.

7 Side Effects of Too Much Apple Cider Vinegar

Unfortunately, apple cider vinegar has been reported to cause some side effects.

This is particularly true in large doses.

Although small amounts are generally fine and healthy, taking too much can be harmful and even dangerous.

1. Delayed Stomach Emptying

Apple cider vinegar helps prevent blood sugar spikes by reducing the rate at which food leaves the stomach and enters the lower digestive tract. This slows down its absorption into the bloodstream (9).

However, this effect may worsen symptoms of gastroparesis, a common condition in people with type 1 diabetes.

In gastroparesis, the nerves in the stomach don’t work properly, so food stays in the stomach too long and is not emptied at a normal rate.

Symptoms of gastroparesis include heartburn, bloating and nausea. For type 1 diabetics who have gastroparesis, timing insulin with meals is very challenging because it’s hard to predict how long it will take food to be digested and absorbed.

One controlled study looked at 10 patients with type 1 diabetes and gastroparesis.

Drinking water with 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of apple cider vinegar significantly increased the amount of time that food stayed in the stomach, compared to drinking plain water (10).

Bottom Line: Apple cider vinegar has been shown to delay the rate at which food leaves the stomach. This may worsen symptoms of gastroparesis and make blood sugar control more difficult for people with type 1 diabetes.

2. Digestive Side Effects

Apple cider vinegar may cause unpleasant digestive symptoms in some people.

Human and animal studies have found that apple cider vinegar and acetic acid may decrease appetite and promote feelings of fullness, leading to a natural reduction in calorie intake (11, 12, 13).

However, one controlled study suggests that in some cases, appetite and food intake may decrease due to indigestion.

The people who consumed a drink containing 25 grams (0.88 oz) of apple cider vinegar reported less appetite but also significantly greater feelings of nausea, especially when the vinegar was part of an unpleasant-tasting drink (14).

Bottom Line: Apple cider vinegar may help reduce appetite, but may also cause feelings of nausea, particularly when consumed as part of a drink with bad flavor.

3. Low Potassium Levels and Bone Loss

There are no controlled studies on apple cider vinegar’s effects on blood potassium levels and bone health at this time.

However, there is one case report of low blood potassium and bone loss that was attributed to large doses of apple cider vinegar taken over a long period of time.

A 28-year-old woman consumed 8 oz (250 ml) of apple cider vinegar diluted in water on a daily basis for six years.

She was admitted to the hospital with low potassium levels and other abnormalities in blood chemistry (15).

What’s more, the woman was diagnosed with osteoporosis, a condition of brittle bones that is rarely seen in young people.

Doctors who treated the woman believe the large daily doses of apple cider vinegar led to minerals being leached from her bones to buffer the acidity of her blood.

They also noted that high acid levels can reduce the formation of new bone.

Of course, the amount of apple cider vinegar in this case was much more than most people would consume in a single day — plus, she did this every day for many years.

Bottom Line: There is one case report of low potassium levels and osteoporosis likely caused by drinking too much apple cider vinegar.

4. Erosion of Tooth Enamel

Acidic foods and beverages have been shown to damage tooth enamel (16).

Soft drinks and fruit juices have been more widely studied, but some research shows the acetic acid in vinegar may also damage tooth enamel.

In one lab study, enamel from wisdom teeth was immersed in different vinegars with pH levels ranging from 2.7–3.95. The vinegars led to a 1–20% loss of minerals from the teeth after four hours (17).

Importantly, this study was done in a lab and not in the mouth, where saliva helps buffer acidity. Nevertheless, there’s some evidence that large amounts of vinegar may cause dental erosion.

A case study also concluded that a 15-year-old girl’s severe dental decay was caused by consuming one cup (237 ml) of undiluted apple cider vinegar per day as a weight loss aid (18).

Bottom Line: The acetic acid in vinegar may weaken dental enamel and lead to loss of minerals and tooth decay.

5. Throat Burns

Apple cider vinegar has the potential to cause esophageal (throat) burns.

A review of harmful liquids accidentally swallowed by children found acetic acid from vinegar was the most common acid that caused throat burns.

Researchers recommended vinegar be considered a “potent caustic substance” and kept in childproof containers (19).

There are no published cases of throat burns from apple cider vinegar itself.

However, one case report found that an apple cider vinegar tablet caused burns after becoming lodged in a woman’s throat. The woman said she experienced pain and difficulty swallowing for six months after the incident (20).

Bottom Line: The acetic acid in apple cider vinegar has caused throat burns in children. One woman experienced throat burns after an apple cider vinegar tablet became lodged in her esophagus.

6. Skin Burns

Due to its strongly acidic nature, apple cider vinegar may also cause burns when applied to the skin.

In one case, a 14-year-old girl developed erosions on her nose after applying several drops of apple cider vinegar to remove two moles, based on a protocol she’d seen on the internet (21).

In another, a 6-year-old boy with multiple health problems developed leg burns after his mother treated his leg infection with apple cider vinegar (22).

There are also several anecdotal reports online of burns caused by applying apple cider vinegar to the skin.

Bottom Line: There have been reports of skin burns occurring in response to treating moles and infections with apple cider vinegar.

7. Drug Interactions

A few medications may interact with apple cider vinegar:

  • Diabetes medication: People who take insulin or insulin-stimulating medications and vinegar may experience dangerously low blood sugar or potassium levels.
  • Digoxin (Lanoxin): This medication lowers your blood potassium levels. Taking it in combination with apple cider vinegar could lower potassium too much.
  • Certain diuretic drugs: Some diuretic medications cause the body to excrete potassium. To prevent potassium levels from dropping too low, these drugs shouldn’t be consumed with large amounts of vinegar.

Bottom Line: Some medications may interact with apple cider vinegar, including insulin, digoxin and certain diuretics.

According to naturopathic doctor and skin expert Dr. Trevor Cates, author of “Clean Skin from Within,” pH plays a huge role in skin care. ”Our skin does best the pH range of 4 to 4.5,” she advises, while many skin care products instead have a high pH. “It impacts our skin microbiome, and it speeds up aging if we’re using high pH products,” explains Cates in a recent Bulletproof Radio podcast episode about the connection between the gut and skin.

Apple cider vinegar toner: In place of a regular toner, make an all-natural ACV toner with Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar, or another raw, unfiltered ACV. To make your own toner, use a 1:2 or 1:3 dilution of ACV. The acidity of an ACV toner helps to restore your skin’s pH balance after washing, with the added perk of beneficial bacteria from the mother. Apply with a cotton ball, instead of spraying your face. Even diluted vinegar in the eye is no fun.

Apple cider vinegar for acne: The acetic acid in apple cider vinegar has antibacterial and keratolytic (aka peeling) properties, which can help treat stubborn acne. Just don’t apply it straight-on. Use as a toner, above, or make this quick and easy detox face mask: Mix about two capsules of Upgraded Coconut Charcoal with just enough ACV to make a wet paste. Apply to the face and neck, wait about 15 minutes, and gently wash it away. If DIY isn’t your thing, model and skincare advocate Andy Hnilo recommends mixing his Alitura Clay Mask with ACV before applying.

Apple cider vinegar as a deodorant: Body odor is caused by bacteria living on your skin. Thanks to its antibacterial properties, apple cider vinegar applied in the armpits can make an effective deodorant. Avoid directly after shaving, since the acid will sting. A 1:1 dilution with warm water also makes a great odor-defeating foot soak. And, fear not; the scent of vinegar dissipates quickly.

Apple cider vinegar for hair: For a clarifying shine treatment, create an apple cider vinegar hair rinse with 1 cup of cool water and 1 to 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. Dry hair does better with less vinegar, while those with oily hair or scalp may prefer more. Pour the mixture into a squeeze bottle and douse your hair and scalp after washing. Let it sit for 2 – 3 minutes before rinsing. The ACV rinse leaves your hair shiny and soft without using chemicals, and the vinegar smell quickly rinses away.

How to select the best apple cider vinegar

Choose the mother lode: When comparing ACVs, the murkier, the better. In its unfiltered and unpasteurized state, a good apple cider vinegar contains a cloudy mass called the mother. Apple cider vinegar’s mother is full of probiotics, beneficial bacteria and enzymes, and trace minerals. Clear, filtered apple cider vinegar is stripped of this benefit, making raw, organic apple cider vinegar with mother the most nutritionally potent option.

Avoid apple cider vinegar pills: Although you can also buy apple cider vinegar pills, stick to using raw, liquid ACV. Apple cider vinegar pills contain no live probiotics, and have caused esophageal damage. Plus, in a study of several available brands, researchers were left unsure if ACV was even an ingredient in ACV pills. The good news, apple cider vinegar is delicious, and easy to add to so many different recipes.

From salad dressings to bone broth, there are countless recipes to help incorporate apple cider vinegar into your diet.

Apple cider vinegar drink: If you’re looking for a more direct dose, here’s how to make your own apple cider vinegar tonic: Dilute 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar into an 8-ounce glass of water. Always rinse your mouth with water afterwards, and never take a straight shot of apple cider vinegar. Its acidity can damage your esophagus, stomach, and tooth enamel.

    A daily dose of ACV can’t be that harmful to your health, but here are what three registered dietitians have to say to convince you otherwise:

    1. It can cause you serious stomach problems

    Vinegar is acidic and some people can’t tolerate it well.

    It’s best to avoid ACV if you have ulcerative colitis, digestive tract inflammation or just being prone to stomach aches, said Leslie Bonci, RD, the owner of Active Eating Advice.

    Bonci added that while vinegar enhances the flavor to the food without skewing its caloric value, it’s not some elixir for your major transformation.

    2. It can alter your bowel movements

    Apple cider vinegar contains pectin since it is made from fermented apples. Pectin is a soluble dietary fiber that acts as a natural gelling agent, said Eliza Savage, a Registered Dietitian in New York City who works at Middleberg Nutrition.

    The pectin in ACV helps form the stool, promote good bacteria growth in the gut and lessens inflammation. But when you consume too much ACV, you could develop diarrhea.

    According to Savage, the ACV may pull water into the bowel, therefore stool will come out watery and more frequently.

    3. It can compromise your kidneys

    “There has been some research to show that if you do have any sort of weakened kidneys or immunocompromised kidneys, then consuming anything that is highly acidic is not going to be advised,” Amanda Baker Lemein, Registered Dietitian and Nutrition Expert, said.

    ACV should always be diluted. Mix 1 to 2 teaspoons of ACV with 8 ounces of water and progress up to 1 tablespoon mixed with 8 ounces of water, Savage suggested.

    4. It can make you feel bloated

    Apple cider vinegar delays stomach emptying, thereby causing bloating, gas and nausea.

    “At times delayed stomach emptying can cause temporary weight loss,” Savage said. “But a healthier diet alternative would be to increase water intake and choose more high fiber non-starchy vegetables,” she added.

    5. It can exacerbate your acid reflux symptoms

    An increase in ACV is an increase in stomach acid. More stomach acid can worsen your burning sensation if your are already experiencing heartburn or reflux.

    “Anyone who has acid reflux will want to be cautious of overly acidic foods,” Amanda Baker Lemein, a registered dietitian and nutrition expert, said.

    6. It can harm your immune system

    Evidence suggests that probiotics in the gut helps build a strong immune system, but with ACV, it inhibits its probiotic properties.

    Bonci said though fermented foods can help increase good bacteria in your gut, the vinegar depletes the probiotic punch that you need to boost your immune system.

    Apple cider vinegar can help you lose weight in some ways and make you look good, but going crazy over ACV use could push out other nutrients from your diet that is obviously more harmful than being beneficial.

    You’ve no doubt seen plenty of stories on social media touting apple cider vinegar (ACV) as a belly fat-melting elixir that can help you lose weight. But does it actually work? Many holistic health experts and Instagram influencers swear by the stuff. But whether ACV will really help you squeeze into a smaller pair of jeans isn’t quite so straightforward. Here’s what experts and the research actually says about apple cider vinegar for weight loss.

    The science behind apple cider vinegar for weight loss

    Let’s get one thing clear up front: There’s only a small amount of evidence directly tying ACV to weight loss in humans. One study in the Journal of Functional Foods, which followed 39 adults, found that participants who consumed a tablespoon of ACV at lunch and dinner, while cutting 250 calories per day, lost 8.8 pounds in 12 weeks. On the other hand, those who cut the same number of calories but didn’t consume ACV lost only 5 pounds.

    In another study in Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry, 144 obese adults were randomly assigned to drink either a placebo or one to two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar daily for 12 weeks. At the end of the study, those who drank two tablespoons had lost close to 4 pounds, while those who drank one tablespoon lost 2.5 pounds. (Those who drank the placebo actually gained a little bit of weight.)

    However, those findings alone don’t prove that ACV is a magic fat melter. “These studies were done on very small populations,” says registered dietitian Erin Palinksi-Wade, R.D., C.D.E., L.D.N. “But the consistent results indicate that ACV may be a beneficial tool in reducing body weight.”

    What’s more clear? ACV seems to have properties that could potentially support your weight-loss efforts. For instance, a 2013 study from the Journal of Functional Foods suggests that drinking apple cider vinegar before eating is linked to smaller blood sugar spikes. Another 2010 study from the Annals of Nutrition & Metabolism shows that having two teaspoons of ACV during meal time could help reduce sugar crashes and keep blood sugar levels stabilized. Why this happens isn’t totally clear, but nutrition researchers like Carol Johnston, Ph.D., who has studied ACV at Arizona State University for years, suspects that compounds in the vinegar interfere with the absorption of some starches.

    That matters because blood sugar highs and lows tend to lead to cravings for sugary snacks. “So if apple cider vinegar can help control blood sugar, this could help manage cravings and portion control, potentially leading to fewer calories consumed,” explains registered dietitian Amy Goodson, M.S., R.D., C.S.S.D., L.D.

    What’s more, a 2014 study from the Journal of Food Science suggests that vinegars, such as apple cider vinegar, can help reduce the effects of diabetes and prevent cardiovascular disease due to its antioxidant activity. Apple cider vinegar has high levels of a polyphenol called chlorogenic acid, which could help improve heart health by inhibiting the oxidation of bad LDL cholesterol.

    It’s also possible that ACV might directly make you want to eat less. One study by Johnston in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that participants who drank the stuff before a meal consumed up to 275 fewer calories throughout the rest of the day. But again, the reasons behind that are murky. ACV could boast compounds that actually suppress your appetite. But drinking it could also just be so unpleasant that you end up getting turned off from food for the rest of the day.

    So should you try drinking apple cider vinegar for weight loss?

    Drinking ACV alone isn’t going to help you reach your goal weight, but there’s a small chance it could support the efforts that we know work for weight loss, like eating a healthy diet and exercising more.

    And it won’t likely hurt you, say Goodson and Palinski-Wade—as long as you don’t overdo it. Like all vinegars, ACV’s high acidity can irritate your throat and strip tooth enamel, Johnston says. Stick with a tablespoon no more than twice daily, and always dilute it in eight ounces of water, recommends Palinski-Wade. “ACV should never be consumed straight,” she warns.

    How to add apple cider vinegar to your diet for weight loss

    Wondering about the best time to take apple cider vinegar? You can drink a tablespoon of ACV diluted in eight ounces of water up to twice a day—ideally, before or with a meal. That’ll increase the chances that the ACV will boost your satiety and help keep your blood sugar steady, Palinski-Wade says. If you can’t stomach the idea of drinking vinegar, think about working it into your meals instead. Try drizzling ACV and olive oil over a salad or steamed veggies, Palinski-Wade suggests. Or add a tablespoon of ACV to a smoothie.

    As for the best apple cider to drink? You want to choose an ACV that’s labeled raw and unfiltered. “Unfiltered versions contain proteins, enzymes, and healthy bacteria from the vinegar starter or mother,” Palinski-Wade says.
