Drew Barrymore Says Fan Assumed She Was Pregnant: ‘No, I’m Just Fat Right Now’

When Drew Barrymore is filming episodes of her show Santa Clarita Diet, she’s all about following a healthy diet. But once the show is on hiatus, the actress says she’s immediately “pigging out.”

Barrymore, 43, who plays a mom-turned-zombie on the Netflix series, begrudgingly diets to fit the look of a woman on a high-protein (aka human flesh) diet.

“Let’s face it, I hate it,” she said of her filming diet, during an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden on Wednesday night. “I would much rather eat fettuccine alfredo all day long.

But Barrymore wanted to show the major life change her character, Sheila Hammond, is going through after becoming a zombie. And it came at a time when Barrymore was going through her own life change after splitting from ex-husband Will Kopelman.

“When I first started the show, I was 145 lbs. and my life was kind of falling apart,” she said. “And I said, ‘Victor , can I lose 20 lbs. over the course of the show, and change my eyebrows and the height of my shoes and the body language and attitude and go from someone who’s kind of naïve and unhappy to someone who’s empowered and alive?’ And he said yes, and so I got to make that transformation.”

Barrymore successfully lost those 20 lbs. for the first season of show, and then fully enjoyed herself once they finished shooting.

“When I’m doing the show I’m a vegan and I barely eat anything, and I workout every day, and it’s so healthy,” she said. “It gets to be euphoric, and then it’s like food poisoning, you feel like you’ll never eat again, and then before you know it you’re pigging out with the feed bag strapped to your face. And I’m a foodie, and love food and I travel the world for food, so I get heavy again between the show.”

She followed the same plan to shoot the second season, and has now “let it go again.”

“I heard Denzel Washington does this and I don’t know because I just want to believe it, I don’t want to know it’s not true. But he just enjoys his life and then pulls himself back together when he’s doing movies and looks amazing,” Barrymore said. “So I’m giving it the full ‘Denzel,’ even if that exists or not, and I let myself go.”

But while Barrymore doesn’t mind her extra weight, her mom, daughter and even a stranger have commented on her body in the last few weeks. While leaving a restaurant with her friends and all of their kids, a woman stopped her.

“She’s like, ‘God, you have so many kids,’ and I go ‘Well not all of them are mine, I just have two.’ And she’s like, ‘Well, and you’re expecting, obviously.’ And I just looked at her and go ‘No, I’m just fat right now,’ ” Barrymore recalled. “And I walked out of the restaurant and I was like, ‘Oh man, that is rough.’ “

Drew Barrymore Had a Major Cringe Moment with a Fan Who Thought She Was Pregnant

The Santa Clarita Diet star recounted a recent run-in she had with a very presumptuous stranger while out to dinner with her mom friends and children. “She’s like, ‘God, you have so many kids,’ and I go, ‘Well, not all of them are mine, I just have two.’ And she’s like, ‘Well, and you’re expecting, obviously.’ And I literally looked at her and I go, ‘No, I’m just fat right now,’ and I walked out of the restaurant and I was like, ‘Oh man, that’s rough.’” *Cringe*

Barrymore shared her feelings about her filming diet, saying, “Let’s face it: I hate it. I would much rather eat fettuccine Alfredo all day long.”

She explained, “When I’m doing the show I’m a vegan and I barely eat anything, and I work out almost every day, and it’s so healthy and it gets euphoric, and then it’s like food poisoning, you think you’ll never want to eat again, and then before you know it you’re just pigging out with the feed bag strapped to your face. And I’m a foodie, and I love food and I travel the world for food, so I get heavy again.” We feel you so much, Drew.

Playing an undead woman nearly killed Drew Barrymore.

While promoting her new zombie series, Santa Clarita Diet, in New York City, Thursday, February 9, the actress, 41, told Us Weekly that she “almost died” making the Netflix show. In the dark comedy, Barrymore plays Sheila, a California real estate agent who becomes a zombie and feeds on other humans to survive.

In one episode, she jumps on a man’s back to kill him — but while rehearsing the scene, she fell off and smacked her skull on concrete. The actor “was a wide guy and Drew didn’t get a great grip,” recalled creator Victor Fresco, who also spoke with Us Weekly. “Then he held onto her legs as she slipped off, and so she just pivoted down all the way and just hit her head. I thought, ‘That’s it. We’ve killed Drew Barrymore.’”

The mom to Olive, 4, and Frankie, 2, cringed as she thought about the July 2016 incident that left her with a concussion. “It was f–king terrifying,” she continued. “It was very serious. I’ve never had a feeling like that in my life.” Paramedics arrived at the Santa Clarita, California, set and whisked her to a nearby hospital, where she spent two days undergoing MRIs and CAT scans.

Production shut down while Barrymore was hospitalized. But when she returned to the set a week after the accident, the Golden Globe winner still had to film the scene. (Fresco admitted he never considered scrapping it.) “Coming back, it was scary,” she continued. “Everyone was really tense.”

There was, however, a silver lining: Barrymore saw how the entire cast and crew rallied around her. “I love that this group of people, who aren’t family necessarily, are coming together and care about my well-being,” she remembered thinking. “It was a nice moment where you see the good in people.”

Drew Barrymore is feeling more confident than ever these days.

The 41-year-old actress stopped by the Today show on Friday to promote her new Netflix show — The Santa Clarita Diet — with her co-star Timothy Olyphant, and shared she lost 20 pounds while filming. Barrymore plays Sheila in the show, who becomes a zombie after she dies.

“It came in the middle of this moment in my life where I had let myself go due to personal circumstances,” Barrymore shares. “And I thought I could come alive with Sheila. It was a really great goal line for me, because as much as the weight loss, everything’s very subtle — it’s attitudinal, it’s empowerment, it’s confidence.”

“It’s all of these things that she’s lost in her life — and I felt I had sort of lost in my life — and it was such a blessing to come alive with her, and it really was so positive for me,” she adds.

Barrymore jokes that losing weight was a central part of playing Sheila.

Barrymore is currently single after splitting from her ex-husband, art consultant Will Kopelman, last April. The pair have two daughters together, 4-year-old Olive and 2-year-old Frankie.

In November, the actress acknowledged that 2016 was a difficult year for her. “I have cried a lot this year,” she Instagrammed. “I have always been a person who is flawed. I forgive. I fight. But I do not fight with others. I will spend my life trying to give love. And I am always aware and appreciative when I receive it. My heart is very open right now.”

The life cycle of Santa Clarita Diet, Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant‘s zombie-comedy on Netflix, has come to an end.

The streaming service moved to cancel its wacky series with star power after the 10 episodes of its third season dropped on the platform March 29.

“The world had never known a ‘zom-com’ until Santa Clarita Diet, and we’re indebted to creator Victor Fresco for bringing this idea to Netflix,” a statement from Netflix reads (via The Hollywood Reporter). “To their endless credit, the incredible Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant were totally game, with an uncanny knack for comedy that brought Sheila and Joel Hammond to vibrant life, even though one of them was undead. We’re grateful to Victor, Drew, and Timothy, along with fellow executive producers Tracy Katsky, Aaron Kaplan, Chris Miller and Ember Truesdell and the terrific cast, including Liv Hewson and Skyler Gisondo, and crew for three hilarious seasons for Netflix members to discover for years to come.”

Barrymore, a star and executive producer on Santa Clarita Diet, called her character Sheila Hammond, a real-estate agent in California who transforms into a zombie, “one of my favorites.” Olyphant played her husband, Joel.

“She and Joel were an amazing couple, who had shared goals. And I am lucky to have worked along side Tim Olyphant,” Barrymore said. “It was an honor to get to do something so delightful. Sheila lives forever in me. And I am grateful to Victor Fresco, who created a world so unique.”

“I loved working on this show,” Olyphant, also an EP, said in his own statement. “I’m going to continue coming in and doing scenes. If they don’t want to film it, that’s up to them.”

Another member of the team, Tracy Katsky Boomer, an executive producer beside series creator Victor Fresco, commented on Twitter, “It’s been an incredible experience and I’m so so grateful to all the peeps but also you guys this sucks.”

The cast also featured Liv Hewson, Skyler Gisondo, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Natalie Morales, Richard T. Jones, Alan Tudyk, and Nathan Fillion.

Hewson, who played Abby Hammond, wrote the show was “such a treasure to make and be a part of” in tweeting about the cancellation. “I count myself very lucky to have lived three years of it. thank you all for watching and playing with us.”

sorry to bear bad news, team. this show has been such a treasure to make and be a part of; i count myself very lucky to have lived three years of it. thankyou all for watching and playing with us 💖https://t.co/rGcYJrDV0I

Santa Clarita Diet is canceled? You’re really going to end things with THAT CLIFFHANGER @netflix???? #NotImpressed

— Jessica Carter (@dangergirl101) April 27, 2019

So I get Netflix is the real buttheads for canceling Santa Clarita Diet but it does speak to the problem I have with shows that insist on ending every season with a cliffhanger… It’s just kind of a mean set up for fans if you don’t know that you are going to get a next one

I’ll miss you @SCDiet. Thanks for giving us one of Timothy Olyphant’s greatest roles.

The dress must follow the body of a woman, not the body following the shape of the dress.

HUBERT DE GIVENCHY, fashion designer

Body-shape-type-hourglass-rectangular-triangle-oval-bell

The overall shape of a person is defined mainly by their skeletal structure, as well as the distribution of muscles and fat.

Start in this place for a basic understanding of body types and their classification. This will help you decide the main shape you should follow when choosing something to wear.

Get inspired by the celebrities mentioned here, and the images that are showing the silhouette for each body type.

Female body type shape hourglass

1. HOURGLASS

Hourglass it’s considered one of the most attractive female body shape.

Shoulders, bust and hips have almost the same size, where bust and hips are well balanced.

Waistline is small, or very small.

Lower hips are wider than higher hips, and the weight is gained through the hips and above the waist. Gain weight it is usually equally distributed, on both bust and hips.

TIPS: Have dresses with open necklines, cinched waist, and skirts that fall straight from the hips.

Best necklines are V-necks, scoop necks, V-neck halter, and sweethearts that are cut down.

For petite figures it’s important to highlight the waist.

Use soft and stretchy fabrics that are more likely to accentuate your shape in a flattering way.

These four body shapes hold the key to woman’s weight loss

But before signing up for a gym membership, perhaps you should decide which of these body shapes you are.

Because that is the key to successfully achieving your goals, according to celebrity personal trainer Matt Roberts. Yesterday Mr Roberts, whose clients include David and Samantha Cameron, said women’s bodies fall into four categories – apple, pear, hourglass and tubular.

And as he gave his New Year’s fitness tips, which include swearing off alcohol for at least a month and cutting out all dairy except for milk in tea, Mr Roberts said it was “crucial” to work with your shape.

Hourglass shapes
Embodied by Myleene Klass, Kate Winslet or Nigella Lawson – should focus on their abdominals and go for long jogs or bike rides to help make themselves appear leaner.

Kate Winslet.Source:AP

What: Known for their curves, hourglass women have shapely chests and bottoms, but slimmer waists.

Who: Kate Winslet, Myleene Klass and Nigella Lawson.

What to do: Running and long-duration cardiovascular work. Try exercise that works the whole body such as circuit training.

What not to do: Don’t try to get rid of your curves, work with them to create tone and definition. Avoid letting your diet slip as hourglasses have a tendency to put on weight easily.

Matt Roberts said: “You’ve probably got a great waistline, shape in your backside and a bit of a bust. It’s about keeping the waistline ultra-thin with torso work and long-duration cardio work as the danger for an hourglass is that you put on weight and it goes on everywhere.”

Tubular shapes
Women with body shapes such as Cara Delevingne or Keira Knightley, are advised to cut out cardiovascular work, avoid losing weight and instead do strength-based work to build muscle.

Keira Knightly.Source:Supplied

What: A small chest and bottom and little definition at the waistline.

Who: Cara Delevingne and Keira Knightley.

What to do: Increase calorie intake to build up muscle and help develop some curves. Split routines are the best forms of exercise as it means you focus on different parts of the body on different days.

What not to do: Try to limit the amount of cardiovascular work you do. Instead go for heavy loading strength work to help with toning.

Matt Roberts said: “You’re trying to create some butt and some bust. Creating enough size where you want it means building up muscle mass.”

Pear shapes
Women like Beyonce and Rihanna, meanwhile, should work on building arm muscle and try out high-intensity interval training such as hill sprints.

Beyonce.Source:AP

What: Most weight on their bottoms and thighs.

Who: Beyonce and Rihanna.

What to do: High-intensity interval training, as it helps raise your metabolism and burn fat. Upper body weights will help build arm and shoulder definition to even the body out.

What not to do: Lower body weightlifting will increase the areas you are trying to reduce. Instead try toning by doing dynamic lunges and squats.

Matt Roberts said: “Go to the park, find a nice big hill, sprint up the hill and walk down again several times. Or go for a run where you do a faster pace for 85 seconds, maximum speed for a minute, then walk for two. In the pool go fast for a length then slow for two. This burns away vast amounts of energy and vast amounts of fat.”

Apple shapes
And if like Melanie Griffith you are an apple, you can reduce your waistline with core work, long-duration cardio and leg weights to even out your shape.

What: An apple-shaped woman’s best assets are her legs. She will have a small bottom and have more fat around her torso and arms.

Who: Catherine Zeta Jones, Melanie Griffith and Drew Barrymore.

What to do: Interval training and longer-distance cardio will offer a balance of fat-burning and toning. Focus on the abdominals and building up the lower body using weights.

What not to do: Avoid particularly heavy upper body weights or you will bulk up areas which are already the largest.

Matt Roberts said: “All the time it’s about leanness and working with what you’ve got. Apple shapes have great legs and small backsides. You can work on the legs really hard as they won’t build size up and it’s all about trying to reduce the size of the waistline where you can, so work on your core.”

Mr Roberts suggested visualising how you would like your body to look. “Think, what’s the best version of you?” he said. “What do you actually want to look like in a year’s time? And have that as your reference point.”

But he added: “You need to be realistic about what your shape can become. If you look at Kate Moss and say, ‘I want to look like her, she looks great’, well she does. But if you’re an hourglass shape you are an hourglass shape so choose the role model for your shape that’s appropriate.

“If you get that right you can aspire to be the person you want to look like. Otherwise it is just never going to happen, even with the best will in the world. You’ve got to tweak around your edges, not someone else’s.”

Mr Roberts went on to give his January weight loss tips, which include giving up alcohol and limiting dairy and sugar intake for a few weeks.

“There’s three things to do in January that would get you guaranteed results,” Mr Roberts said. “Stop drinking for four weeks because alcohol is a suppressant and it means we need other things to pick us up again.

“Also reduce your dairy levels down to being just milk in tea but nothing else. And then look at your sugar levels.”

“It’s only a small amount of time – spend January and February looking after yourself and you can look great, feel great and build towards looking fantastic in the summer.”
