Let’s pretend I didn’t say anything about how drinking coffee could cause cellulite, mkay? Because never, ever, no never would I ask you to give up your coffee. However, here are two things you can do with it that don’t involve drinking.

  • Turn the Coffee into a Shower Scrub: After you’ve made your morning pot, place the grinds in a bowl and cover them with olive oil, sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil (or any kind of oil you’d like, really … just try to stick to cold-pressed and avoid ANYTHING that’s partially-hydrogenated). Stir the mixture and let it sit for a few minutes to allow the coffee time to infuse into the oil. In the shower, scrub your body with this mixture, focusing on the tricky dimply parts. Rinse well.
  • Kick Your Lotion Up a Notch with Coffee: Take some dry coffee grounds and toss them back into the grinder or food processor. Let them grind into a fine powder. Add this powder to your favorite lotion and apply to troublesome areas. This is best used at night or anytime you’re going to be home for a good block of time. The first thing to understand about treating cellulite is that you DON’T need costly, painful surgery. You also don’t have to wake up early in the morning and overexert yourself by running 5+ miles a day.

Oh, and don’t have to limit how much you eat, either significantly. But you will want to adjust what you’re eating (more on that later).

It’s important to note that working to reduce the appearance cellulite is not just for vanity – if left untreated the conditions that create cellulite can also promote other more serious problems in the body, like lymphatic issues or harmful amounts of fluid retention.

So while some people may say that it’s no big deal to have cellulite, it can be an essential health concern to address!

A simple understanding of cellulite with a simple approach to treatment

The secret to banishing cellulite might be simpler than you think.

And there’s a good chance that you could lose some weight in the process of treatment, too.

Cellulite develops as a result of dense, saturated fatty body tissue becoming bound with digestive impurities (toxins) that collect beneath the skin. T

hus cellulite is essentially a lymph drainage problem as toxins and fluid accumulate as fat pockets when the lymph system is not working properly.

The (simplified) solution is to avoid things that promote these fat and lymph deposits (from a diet, in particular) and focusing on activating and nourishing our digestive and detoxifying powers to flush out the existing deposits.

A simple premise, but it can take a lot of work to accomplish because the built-up materials (toxins) that have accumulated in our fatty tissue are tough to eliminate, as they are heavy and sticky substances.

To separate the fatty tissues from these built up materials, you need to focus on what foods we’re putting into your body. And, ideally, work with natural herbs while also directly stimulating your skin with massage and bodywork to help dislodge the deposited cellulite tissues under the skin.

  • 20 drops rosemary

  1. In a 5 mL (1/6 oz) glass bottle combine your essential oils and shake to blend

Ways to use your Cellulite Massage Oil Blend

Below are a few ways you can make use of your massage blend.

  • Dry brushing: Before taking a shower or bathing sprinkle 1-2 drops of your cellulite massage blend onto a natural-bristle body brush. Using small circular motions brush your limbs upwards the hear (stimulating and improving circulation)
  • In the bath: While filling your tub with warm water take a small non-reactive bowl and combine 1 tsp (5 mL) milk (or castile soap) and 4-6 drops of your Cellulite Massage Oil. Why you should use natural treatments for cellulite (and avoid unnatural methods)

According to modern medical science, there is no outstanding treatment for cellulite.

This narrowed view of the condition opens up a bunch of surgical/pharmaceutical alternative treatments that may or may not work directly on the condition. These treatments can make things worse while potentially doing nothing in the way of limiting the appearance of your cellulite.

Here is a short list and some descriptions of modern treatments available:

  • Collagenase shots. This treatment method involves administering shots that break down the connective tissue under your skin. The long terms effects are unknown, and there is not yet consensus available about the potential for improvements.
  • Methylxanthines. This is a chemical that is administered to break down fat stores. Its efficacy and safety are questionable.
  • Mesotherapy. Multiple doctor visits required with administration via injection of drugs directly into tissue. Some physicians offer this, but most experts question the treatment and its potential risks.
  • Laser therapy. This treatment method can reduce signs of cellulite over time, after many treatments ($$$), but it will not help you treat and remove the underlying causes that lead to your condition.
  • Liposuction. Occasionally recommended as a treatment for cellulite, liposuction can worsen the appearance of cellulite and stretch marks and create additional dimpling of the skin.

All of these treatments attempt to fix the symptoms of cellulite, but not the causes. The risks involved and limited potential for short-term benefits doesn’t seem inviting for many, especially with natural approaches being available.

Follow cellulite reducing diet

Even though the diet recommendations come later in this post, that does not mean they are less important than what we’ve already discussed.

In fact, diet is perhaps the most important aspect of cellulite reduction. And this is also where the need to have a strong sense of dedication comes in – some of the most basic recommendations, like cutting out tea, coffee and alcohol prove hard for many to put into practice.

If you do everything else perfect – you use your essential oils, you take herbal remedies – but don’t watch your diet, you might end up seeing no changes to your cellulite. In fact, if your diet is really poor, your cellulite could get worse.

Changing diet is is the hardest thing to do in this whole article.

We are all attached to the foods we have eaten all our lives, and most people can be stubborn about changing what they eat. Even when it’s incredibly important for their health.

The plus side of eating a cellulite reducing diet isn’t just the reduction of cellulite. It’s that you’re likely going to get closer to your ideal weight, too. Following the diet I recommend below, you’ll also likely suffer from less congestion, feel less lethargic, need less sleep and have a lighter, quicker mind and body.

It’s a win-win for a lot of reasons.

What to eat and what not to eat

If we want to eliminate excess stores of body weight and toxins, then we need to stop eating things that make us accumulate excess body weight and toxins.

Simple.

Below is a very brief list of food categories. If you want to learn more about these categories more in-depth, and with recommended foods, check out this post on Banyan Botanicals. Remember that Kapha equals excess fat and toxins that we are trying to get rid of, so a Kapha reducing diet like what is explained in their post is one that will reduce fat and the presence of cellulite.

  • Fruits – Focus on eating mildly sweet and astringent fruits. Fresh fruits are better than dried. Avoid overly sweet, sour, heavy, dense and watery fruits like bananas, coconut, dates, melons, pineapple or plums. Also, try to eat fruits by themselves and not mixed in with other foods to help their digestion.
  • Vegetables – Focus on eating pungent, bitter and astringent veggies. Cooked veggies are easier to digest than fresh, so limit fresh ones. Avoid dense, oily, watery vegetables like avocado, cucumber, olives.
  • Grains – Focus on eating light, dry and rough grains. But reduce grain consumption overall if you can. Avoid grains that are heavy, moist or dense like wheat, flour, bread, cooked outs, and pasta. Replace these grains with extra veggies and legumes.
  • Legumes – Legumes are astringent which is a balancing taste for anyone overweight or dealing with cellulite. Cook your legumes well and use spices to help assist digestion.
  • Dairy – Try to minimize dairy as it is heavy and mucus promoting. It congests the body, which is what we are trying to avoid. Almond and rice milk are better to drink.
  • Nuts and Seeds – Nuts and seeds are heavy, dense and oily which isn’t good for trying to lose extra off your figure. If you eat nuts eat lighter ones and only enjoy occasionally.
  • Meat & Eggs – Focus on lighter fare meats like chicken and freshwater fish. Avoid heavy, dense, oily meats like pork and beef. Too much meat will add more strain and digestive workload on your body and can do more harm than good.
  • Oils – Consume plenty of saturated fat. Polyunsaturated (omega 6 & 9)oils should be limited. Coconut oil, Avocado oil, & ghee are all great options.
  • Sweeteners – Limit sweeteners, in general. But small amounts of honey, which is lighter and drier than other sweeteners, is recommended. But use it raw, as cooking can damage honey. Limit artificial sweeteners and HFCS (high fructose corn syrup).
  • Spices – Spices, which help with digestion, are recommended. Use spices freely to boost your metabolism and help your body improve circulation and elimination.

Exercise

Exercise is recommended for reducing cellulite. Some people put a lot of stock into exercise as a cure for cellulite, and tend to go overboard in their recommendations.

You don’t have to become a marathoner to get rid of cellulite… Simple and moderate activity will help you a lot.

For one, exercise will help your body improve its ability to circulate blood efficiently as well as burn fat, toxins, and fatty acids. All of this helps improve the elimination of unnecessary tissues and toxins.

Daily aerobic exercise and yoga did daily or 20 minutes or so should be sufficient. Focus on doing activities that are both doable and fun for you. No need to overdo it! Only do more if you want to. And remember to exercise at fifty to seventy percent of your capacity. Don’t strain yourself unnecessarily.

It’s also recommended that you do exercises the work specifically on the cellulite-prone areas of your body, as these are often the places that get no exercise and, hence, tend to gather toxins.

Certain times of the day are better and more conducive to exercise than others. The morning is the best, between 6 am, and 10 am. But anytime that you can fit it in is great!

We have had several people ask for cellulite oils at the store, so I thought we’d post an essential oil recipe for cellulite.

First, let me say that in general, having cellulite is genetic. Cellulite is caused when fat deposits push through connective tissues near the skin. Even people who are slender and fit have cellulite, in fact, 90% of women will experience cellulite in their lifetime.

I am skeptical of most cellulite creams on the market, especially those advertising “miracle results”. Still, there are several essential oils that may help with tightening and detoxifying the skin to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Grapefruit oil can help to remove toxins from the body. Juniper oil can help with reducing water retention. Cypress oil can help to improve circulation, as well as reducing water retention. Rosemary and cinnamon oils can also help to improve the circulation of blood in the body. Orange oil also helps with circulation, and can work to tighten the skin.

  • 1 oz. amber glass dropper bottle
  • 3 drops of grapefruit oil
  • 3 drops of juniper oil
  • 3 drops of cypress oil
  • 3 drops of rosemary oil
  • 3 drops of orange oil
  • Carrier oil of your choice- coconut and avocado oil are nice and moisturizing

Put the essential oils in the bottom of the dropper bottle and fill the rest of the way with a carrier oil. Be sure not to overfill the bottle so you’re able to put the dropper back in without overflowing.

Rub the oil mixture on problem areas before bed or as desired.

Essential Oils For Cellulite

The weather is beginning to get warmer now and it will soon be time for us to reveal areas of flesh that have remained hidden under layers of warm woollies throughout the past five months.

Chances are that hidden under those layers of winter-warmers are even more areas of lumpy, bumpy cellulite than you had last year!

Did you know that although it is possibly the greatest affliction to hit womankind, surprisingly, not all medical practitioners even acknowledge that cellulite exists, arguing it is just fat and you should just lose some weight. Beauticians often point to hormones, fluid retention and poor circulation, whilst many complementary therapists think cellulite is caused by the body’s inability to efficiently eliminate toxins.

Likely suspects

Fast food, chocolate, nicotine, caffeine, alcohol, toxin build-up and a lack of exercise have all at some time been accused of being the cause of cellulite. Some experts argue that it can be none of the above or men would suffer from this curse too. Good point. Poor diet and a lack of exercise are often cited, but even Olympian women athletes get cellulite too, so it can’t just be down to a matter of exercise and diet either.

Other causes are thought to be poor circulation, fluid retention, heredity, hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone, and of course eventually, age. Cellulite typically develops during periods of hormonal change such as puberty, pre-menstrual, early months of taking birth control pills, pregnancy and menopause – so hormonal factors are likely suspects. Since hormones regulate and control changes in fat and connective tissue, blood flow, and lymphatic drainage, it seems clear that they must contribute to cellulite in a way that we have yet to understand.

The latest opinion from researchers is that it is mainly down to gender and genetics. Women have weaker collagen (which is a connective tissue) than men, and when fat is stored into millions of tiny pockets which are surrounded by collagen it can buckle under the weight, allowing the fat cells to pucker. How aromatherapy can combat cellulite

Poor circulation is cited time and again as a causative factor, which is why massaging with essential oils is such a great remedy for cellulite. This powerful combination increases circulation and helps with the elimination of toxins by unblocking lymphatic congestion, and when done correctly, massage helps break up the fatty deposits too.

Cellulite always looks much worse if you are suffering from fluid retention, and massage activates the lymph vessels and nodes which help to transport toxins out of the body. The use of the correct essential oils facilitates this action, and there are several ones to choose from to make up a blend.

To treat cellulite you should use smooth, firm movements without putting undue pressure on the affected areas – rubbing until you are bruised won’t make it go away! Of course the massage doesn’t tackle the underlying cause of cellulite, but apart from unblocking lymphatic congestion it brings some cosmetic relief by firming and toning the skin leaving it smooth and silky.

Surprisingly, the easiest way to stimulate the circulatory system is to take a nice, warm, relaxing bath using essential oils known to increase the circulation, detoxify the body, balance the hormones and act as a diuretic. Just don’t run away with the idea that 3 baths a day will erase all your cellulite!

Essential oils for cellulite

When working in my clinic with cellulite clients I always include juniper berry essential oil in the blend due to its powerful diuretic action. Citrus oils such as lemon and grapefruit are effective lymphatic system stimulants and they blend well with juniper berry creating an effective synergy.

Since many experts feel that hormonal imbalances are responsible for causing cellulite, geranium oil can be beneficial in your blend since it has a balancing effect on hormones. Other useful essential oils that you can use in your anti-cellulite treatment plan include; carrot seed, cypress, ginger, lime, rosemary and thyme white.

When making your blend for a massage oil, lotion or cream, add no more than 5 drops in total of your individual or blended essential oils to every 10mls of your chosen carrier. Massage the blend well in, and whilst standing up roll folds of flesh between your thumb and fingers to break up the fatty deposits. Start above the knees and work upwards towards the groin, and then repeat on the back of your thighs.

If you really want to beat the dreaded dimples however, you should plan to have at least one treatment session lasting about 20 minutes every day for a couple of weeks, so it’s a good idea to get your partner to help you reach the difficult areas. Cellulite oils bath blend

Here’s a great cellulite-busting blend for the bath; add 2 drops of juniper berry, 2 drop of sweet fennel, 1 drop of cypress and 1 drop of grapefruit. Run your bath before adding any essential oils, and be sure to agitate the water sufficiently to ensure the oils are dispersed sufficiently, or use a Bath Dispersant.

Once absorbed into your bloodstream, these essential oils will really get to work boosting your circulatory system and stimulating the lymph flow. The elimination of toxins is absolutely vital in the treatment of cellulite, so drink plenty of water to help with this process.

Don’t forget though, no matter what regime you choose you will still need to look at your diet and exercise more if you really want to beat this lumpy, bumpy problem. And you can’t expect a miracle cure if you only start treatments a month before your holiday! So the sooner you start, the sooner you will be ready to hit the beach with your new, cellulite-free body.

Say Goodbye to Cellulite with Essential Oils

We are approaching summer now and swimsuit season is in full swing. One of the major concerns for practically every woman during swimsuit season is the dreaded C word…cellulite…that lumpy, dimpled, orange-peel texture that seems to target skin on thighs, bottom and backs of arms and is the shame and embarrassment of anyone who has it. Cellulite affects nearly every woman as she gets older. Major scientific discoveries have uncovered the factors that cause cellulite.

Although there are three layers of fat under the skin, only the top layer is involved with cellulite. Changes in the connective tissue structure in this top layer of fat, caused by pregnancy, hormonal, structural, vascular changes, genetics and aging, trigger the formation of cellulite allowing fat to protrude deeply into the dermis (the layer of skin beneath the outermost layer), which is what causes the characteristic lumpy appearance of cellulite.

Hormones secreted in response to stress, particularly cortisol, also encourage fat deposits in problem areas. Pregnenolone is the precursor hormone from which all other hormones are created. It is an important precursor for the body’s production of progesterone which blocks cortisol receptors.

Some of the essential oils that combat excess cortisol are Balsam Fir, Conyza, Fennel, Peppermint and Frankincense essential oils. Balsam Fir decreases cortisol whether inhaled, oral, or topical, by as much as 42% reduction, the average reduction, however is around 28%.

Magnetic resonance imaging studies have shown that women with cellulite have pillar-like columns separating the fat chambers, which are larger and deeper than those in men. These large vertical chambers can store an abundance of fat.

Collagen supporting tissues of men, on the other hand, is more like a criss-cross net that is organized into small diagonal chambers, which hold only small amounts of fat…that’s why men typically don’t have cellulite.

Cellulite is mostly related to the underlying structure or framework and relationship of adipose to connective tissue in women. Scientists are now saying that cellulite is a disease of the connective tissue and is the product of extensive connective tissue destruction and that the three main causes of cellulite are excess fat deposition, weakened connective tissue support structure and poor circulation.

Fat storage and breakdown are controlled by two sets of special receptors called alpha and beta receptors on the surface of each fat cell. The beta receptors promote fat loss and are regulated by the hormone epinephrine, whereas the alpha receptors prevent fat breakdown and promote fat storage. In the case of cellulite the alpha receptors outnumber the beta receptors. Women also unfortunately tend to have more fat storage alpha receptors than fat breakdown beta receptors in the hips and thighs.

Increasing production in the body of the enzymes hormone sensitive lipase and the enzyme protein kinase A will help break down the fat cells and release them into the bloodstream and is a key component of helping to eliminate fat and cellulite. Studies have shown that obese people have 70% less lipase in their blood.

As well as connective tissue degeneration, poor circulation and lymph drainage can also aggravate and worsen cellulite. Exercise can stimulate epinephrine release, which can to some degree help reduce the appearance of cellulite but it’s not enough to completely eliminate cellulite. Increasing circulation will help increase lymph flow and also help to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Here are some essential oils to the rescue that are well known to help with circulation, stimulating the lymphatic system and encouraging the elimination of toxins and water retention, all of which help with reducing the appearance of cellulite.

Because some of these particular essential oils are quite strong, they can be irritating to sensitive skin so it is important, if you have sensitive skin, to dilute them in a carrier base oil such as almond, jojoba, coconut, olive, grape seed or avocado oils. All of these oils are great for the skin. Just make sure you are using an organic and expeller pressed oil still in its raw natural state so that its chemical composition hasn’t been altered or destroyed and that its skin nurturing properties are still in tact.

Most all oils when heated past 103 degrees Fahrenheit, with the exception of grape seed and coconut oil, are destroyed, change chemical structure and can even become toxic. A good rule of thumb is if you shouldn’t eat it then you shouldn’t put it on your skin because the skin will absorb it into the body.

So here are the essential oils that will help reduce the appearance of cellulite:

Juniper (Juniperus osteosperma and scopulorum) – Has been used for centuries as a diuretic and is excellent for relieving fluid retention. Renowned for its detoxifying and purifying ability, Juniper essential oil clears waste, promotes excretion of toxins and increases vascular circulation.

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) – Rosemary increases warmth and stimulates blood circulation and is especially useful for circulatory problems of extremities. I stand on my feet for long periods of time and when my legs and calves swell up, rubbing Rosemary essential oil on them relieves the swelling and edema in about 2 minutes. It’s really incredible for combating fluid retention and lymphatic congestion making it very effective for cellulite and obesity (and great for keeping the legs from swelling up during air travel as well).

Cypress Essential Oil (Cupressus sempervirens) – This essential oil is most used for the circulatory system as it improves circulation and strengthens blood capillaries. It also helps in fluid reducing. It is excellent for varicose veins due to its vasoconstricting effect.

Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) – Excellent for all skin types due to its ability to balance sebum. It improves blood flow, is a liver and pancreas stimulant and dilates the bile ducts for liver detoxification. Geranium essential oil also helps to balance the hormones.

Lemon (Citrus limon) – Lemon essential oil is stimulating for the circulatory system and improves microcirculation, strengthens vascular tissues, it is used for treating varicose veins by improving circulation and relieving pressure on the veins (together with Cypress essential oil in a 1 to1 ratio).

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) – Lavender oil may also be used in the treatment of stretch marks.

Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) – Relieves congested and oily skin, having a toning effect on both skin and tissues. For this reason it is a good oil to use when treating cellulite.

Orange (Citrus sinensis) – There is some resemblance between cellulite skin and that of an orange peel and that might be one of the first clues that Orange essential oil is an exceptional oil for reducing the appearance of cellulite. Orange essential oil is a diuretic and is great for relieving fluid retention, it also softens the epidermis, stimulates blood circulation and lymph fluids and is very helpful in treating swollen tissue.

I have mixed equal parts of Orange, Lemon, Cypress and Juniper essential oils and massaged these oils straight into my skin with no carrier oil but adding a few drops of base carrier oil might be a good idea if you have sensitive skin. I noticed a huge difference in the appearance of cellulite within about half an hour.

2. Fennel

Fennel is often used to relieve digestive upsets, like indigestion, cramps and gas. Those cleansing actions also help flush out toxins and decrease water retention.

3. Geranium

Skin-toning

  • 1 ounce glass bottle
  • Slightly less than 1 ounce of carrier oil (sweet almond, grapeseed, etc)
  • 18 drops of essential oils for 2% dilution (see blends below)

Add essential oil drops to glass bottle then fill the rest of the way with carrier oil. Replace cap and shake to combine. To use with dry brushing, add 3-5 drops of oil to the palm of your hand. Glide the bristles of a dry brush across your palm, saturating the bristles with the essential oil blend. Start brushing with the feet and work your way upward, always brushing in the direction of the heart. Here’s a dry brushing video tutorial to show you how.

You can also apply to the skin by using as a massage oil or add a few drops to a bathtub of water. Rub any floating oil droplets into the skin as you soak.

  • 9 drop grapefruit
