Whoopi Goldberg Talks Cannabis: ‘I Think It’s Worth Trying’

Whoopi Goldberg

by Timothy White

“I’ve spent the better part of my life standing up for issues that were important to me,” said actress, comedian, singer, writer, and entrepreneur Whoopi Goldberg in an OpEd about cannabis she wrote in 2018. Her latest cause, she explained, was helping women gain easy access to the therapeutic qualities of the marijuana plant.

This is a wellbeing issue, Goldberg argued, marking the difference between sheer recreation and actual medicinal need; between smoking weed in an old-fashioned joint format and consuming cannabis in ways that are not detrimental to one’s lungs. This comprehension and latter distinction were crucial to the award-winning performer’s decision to get into the cannabis industry, starting a business focused on women’s comfort, and especially on treating menstrual aches.

“I asked a friend in the cannabis industry if anyone was doing marijuana for menstrual cramps; and when he said no, I knew someone had to – and that it may as well be us,” Goldberg told me during a recent conversation. “We started working on a business plan and looking for product developers, which led us to Maya .”

This is how Whoopi & Maya, Goldberg’s first “line of cannabis derived epsom salts and menstrual relief rubs,” as she defines it, came to be. Interested in learning more about this fascinating, women-focused venture, and Whoopi’s long-standing love affair with cannabis, I decided to enquire further.

Whoopi & Weed

For Whoopi, the therapeutic properties of cannabis are no novelty.

“When I was younger, I realized it helped my cramps, and I’ve had a good relationship with it since,” Whoopi revealed. “It continues to help me feel better as I get older. I‘m a big fan of our products and my vape pen… they provide me relief as I get older.

We’re not saying our products will work for everyone, but I think it’s worth trying.”

The Birth Of A New Love

The search for an outstanding cannabis grower was what led Whoopi to Maya Elisabeth, who is her partner at Whoopi & Maya today.

“When we started looking for someone to help us make products, we saw that Maya won the most Cannabis Cups and was involved in a women run collective. We met and we hit it off immediately,” said the immensely talented performer, winner of an Emmy Award, a Grammy Award, an Academy Award (or Oscar), and a Tony Award – dang!

“I thought her product was great, and I asked her if she’d be willing to do this with us. Luckily she said yes, and we launched Whoopi & Maya.”

Now, what makes Whoopi & Maya different from other companies in the cannabis, and the health and wellness spaces? Why is this brand so appealing to women?

“Our goal is to make you feel better, not get you high,” Whoopi told me. “There are plenty of products out there that will get you high, but we want to make sure you are feeling OK.

“We want to help women who have bad cramps be able to work a full work day without excruciating pain.”

From Hollywood To Holly-Weed

I wondered how similar (or different) running a company and being a performer had been for Whoopi.

“This is a long term plan and we‘re still a relatively small company,” responded the artist who captivated the world with her role as Celie in The Color Purple. “Entertainment projects come and go and there are so many things outside your control. I like that we can own this and have control over the direction of our business.”

Beyond these differences, I wanted to know if Whoopi had learned any lessons from her career in entertainment that could be applied to her business.

“Quality and working with the right people is important no matter what you do in life,” she voiced, unhesitant.

Whoopi’s Words of Wisdom

Close to the end of our chat, I asked Whoopi to share a story of a big challenge she and her team had had to face while building or growing Whoopi & Maya, and to explain how they had overcome it.

“Starting the company itself was very difficult: we had to find the team, put together the plan, raise money, and then do it all,” she said. “After we launched, we started learning what worked and what didn’t and still have to continuously re-adjust course as regulations change, and we learn more. But the response has been incredible and it’s very rewarding to offer a product that helps so many.”

Finally, I requested Whoopi shared some advice for entrepreneurs getting into the cannabis business.

“Jump in and try it, you never know what can happen until you do,” Whoopi ended.

Bad habits are sneaky by nature. You figure you’ll have “just one” cookie, or cigarette, or drink, or whatever your vice of choice may be, and the next thing you know you’ve had two, 10, 20 – day after day after day. After a while, that habit can take over your life so much that it may seem like you can never get rid of it. But today, I want you to know that any moment could be the moment you kick that habit and change your life for good. That’s what my friend and guest on my show, Whoopi Goldberg, did when she recently quit cigarettes for good after decades of smoking. What inspired her to stop might surprise you, but could just be your ticket to better health, too.

Whoopi began smoking when she was just 12 years old and smoked her entire adult life. Even though she overcame many obstacles and other addictions over the course of her life, she couldn’t shake her cigarette habit. Until one day changed everything. She saw a video from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation about two young children, Keith and Kennedy, who suffer from a genetic disease called cystic fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis (CF) causes thick mucus to collect in the lungs, which makes it incredibly difficult to breathe. Though treatments have improved over the past several decades, this difficult disease is still incurable, and most people with CF don’t live past their 30s.

Keith and Kennedy don’t let their CF slow them down, though. Even though they both have to take multiple medications and do special breathing treatments twice a day, both Keith and his little sister are active, happy kids – and Keith, who’s only 9 years old, can even run a 6-minute mile.

It’s not hard to see why Whoopi was inspired by these strong, brave children. After she heard Keith say that what he wishes for most is a cure for CF, she knew that even if she couldn’t cure his disease or give him a new pair of lungs, the least she could do was stop hurting her own. In that moment, she put a stop to decades of dangerous smoke inhalation and sent her body on the way to recovery. You can learn more about how to quit smoking and how quickly the body recovers from tobacco use here.

I am so proud of Keith and Kennedy and Whoopi for realizing that life’s challenges never defeat you. In fact, every new moment provides you with a chance to accept the challenge to make your life better. This isn’t easy – in fact, it’s one of the hardest things we can do – but it’s always worth it. I hope you’ll join Whoopi, Kennedy and Keith to embrace the bravest part of yourself and change your life now.

Whoopi Goldberg has had it with cramps and had it with stoner jokes, and now she’s doing something about both.

Goldberg announced Wednesday that she’s launching a medical-marijuana company with Maya Elisabeth, one of the leading “canna-businesswomen” in the field, with a line of products designed to provide relief from menstrual cramps.

The company, Maya & Whoopi, will offer cannabis edibles, tinctures, topical rubs, and a THC-infused bath soak that it describes as “profoundly relaxing.” Frankly that last one, even though your humble reporter is a man, sounds incredible.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, The View co-host said she wanted to create a product for women that was discreet, provided relief, and wouldn’t leave you glued to your couch.

“For me, I feel like if you don’t want to get high high, this is a product specifically just to get rid of discomfort,” she says. “Smoking a joint is fine, but most people can’t smoke a joint and go to work.”

“This, you can put it in your purse,” Goldberg continues. “You can put the rub on your lower stomach and lower back at work, and then when you get home you can get in the tub for a soak or make tea, and it allows you to continue to work throughout the day.”

Goldberg has been outspoken about her medical-marijuana use in the past. In 2014, she wrote in The Cannabist about her love of her kush-filled vape pen, which she says gives her relief from glaucoma-related headaches without resorting to eating handfuls of Advil every day.

“I started using the vape pen because I stopped smoking cigarettes about four years ago and discovered I couldn’t smoke a joint anymore,” she says. “The relief that I got with the vape pen was kind of different from what I got with smoking. I could control it much better.”

If it worked so well for headaches, surely it could be applied to other aches, so Goldberg got in touch with a couple of industry experts to see if there was already anything on the medical-marijuana market for cramps. They told her no, because it was seen as a niche.

At this point in the interview, Goldberg stops to give an exasperated chuckle.

“Hey, this niche is half the population on the earth,” she says. “This seems to be people flippantly blowing you off, which is what you get whenever you start talking about cramps. They weren’t thinking how do you target this? I have grown granddaughters who have severe cramps, so I said this is what I want to work on.”

Goldberg then got in touch with Elisabeth, the owner of the female-run medical-marijuana cannabis company Om Edibles in northern California, and the two were off to the races.

Half the population of earth, male or female, isn’t using marijuana for now, but the market is booming. Washington state did nearly half a billion dollars in marijuana sales its first year after legalization, and some projections predict it will be a $20 billion industry in the U.S. by 2020.

Goldberg stands by her product for the same reason she favors it over painkillers for headaches. She says you’ll be able to look at the ingredients on any Whoopi & Maya package and know exactly what’s in it. (Queen Victoria, by the way, supposedly used a marijuana tincture to relieve menstrual cramps, so it basically has the seal of approval from the British royalty.)

For those who don’t have much experience in the field, Whoopi & Maya will also include products with only cannabidiol (CBD), which lacks the euphoric effects commonly associated with marijuana. The whole line is scheduled to be available in April. For now, thanks to the patchwork of state medical-marijuana laws and the continuing federal ban on the substance, it will only be available in California.

Six celebrities who might just persuade you to quit smoking

Celebrities. The larger than life personalities who we think we know, want to know, and want to get to know. We share their pain, rejoice in their accomplishments, and (viciously) defend their honour if naysayers have a crummy word to say against our idols (we’ve learnt the hard way not to mess with the Beyhive).

We also take solace in their mistakes, knowing it brings them a smidge closer to resembling us mere mortals, who might be battling similar demons. “If they can do it, so can I!”, we’ll say, inspired by their stories of willpower, resilience and determination. The power of celebrity is loud; and their influence even louder. So when it comes to quitting smoking, who better to motivate you than these famous people who’ve struggled, battled and overcome the addiction themselves. Cue lighter lights…

1. Jennifer Aniston

One sixth of our favourite on-screen friends, Jennifer Aniston reportedly quit smoking six years ago after almost two decades of lighting up. She’s famously attributed a daily practice of yoga to helping keep her cigarette cravings at bay. And we’re not surprised: people often think it is the cigarette itself which helps calm them down. This is false. The cigarette merely acts as a vehicle that encourages you to inhale more intensely, which in turn, relaxes you. An exercise like yoga mimics the deep breathing you experience when you puff on a cigarette, but unlike smoking, it de-stresses you without destroying your lungs in the process!

2. Barack Obama

It wouldn’t have surprised us to learn that former President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, had taken up smoking after Donald Trump had taken office. But it turns out that he started smoking as a teenager, attempting to ditch the habit during his 2008 presidential campaign. It wasn’t until 2011, however, that former First Lady and wife, Michelle Obama, let the world know that he had been smoke-free for a year. His motivation? Why, Michelle, of course! At a UN meeting in 2013, Obama was overheard telling a delegate he had quit smoking because he’s scared of his wife. And as one of the world’s most influential women, we don’t blame him. All hail, Michelle Obama.

3. Prince Harry

Prince Harry may have once held a ‘party boy’ reputation, occasionally spotted with a Malboro Light between his fingers. But it seems that our favourite Prince’s ‘un-princely’ ways might finally be behind him – thanks to the newest addition to the British Royal Family. We previously wrote about how Meghan Markle was believed to be the reason for why Prince Harry put down his beloved Malboro Lights for good. Reasons reportedly included wanting to start a family (and we all know that smoking decreases sperm count, right?), and encouraging Harry to adopt a ‘greener’ lifestyle fit for a modern-day king. Too bad he’s only sixth-in-line to the throne.

4. Whoopi Goldberg

One ex-celebrity smoker who doesn’t want to take breathing for granted is Whoopi Goldberg. The Hollywood actress turned daytime talk TV show host stopped smoking after watching a video of two young children who suffer from cystic fibrosis (CF), a genetic condition that results in a build-up of sticky mucus in the body’s organs – particularly the lungs – making it incredibly hard to breathe. Inspired by their stories and not wanting to hurt her own lungs any longer, Whoopi decided it was time to bin her vice of choice and take control of a situation that for so many – like those suffering from CF – have no option to.

You can watch the video that changed Whoopi’s life, here.

5. Adele

Adele might be renowned for her string of hit ballads, but the ‘Hello’ songstress waved a firm goodbye to smoking cigarettes four years ago. It was reported that one of her motivations to quit was her fear of dying from a smoking-related illness. And with over 100,000 people in the UK dying from diseases caused by smoking alone, the habit remains one of the leading preventable causes of death. London-based Adele allegedly turned to hypnosis to help her abandon her love for cigarettes, but there’s still little to suggest this technique provides long-term results. If you’re looking for the best way to quit smoking, we suggest you try one of these methods.

6. Gwyneth Paltrow

She may be the founder of one of the biggest – and divisive – alternative lifestyle brands in recent years, but before she started Goop, Gwyneth Paltrow reportedly smoked two packs of cigarettes a day, shunning the habit when she became pregnant with her first daughter. She’s since admitted to enjoying a cheeky off-screen puff on the rare occasion, calling it her “guilty pleasure”. For someone who touts clean living to the masses, we’re glad to see she practices what she preaches…

Celebrities who still smoke:

Not all celebrities have managed to kick the habit. The rumoured list of famous faces that still smoke is surprising:

  • Brad Pitt
  • Rihanna
  • Jessica Alba
  • Zayn Malik
  • Kate Winslet
  • Miley Cyrus
  • Lady Gaga
  • Leonardo DiCaprio
  • Angelina Jolie
  • Keira Knightley
  • Chris Brown
  • Matt Damon
  • Gisele Bundchen
  • Charlize Theron
  • Robert Pattinson and Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart
  • And a host of others!

MANY stars have made empires out of healthy living through diet and exercise, and regularly show off their toned figures.

But it may surprise you to know that many well-known stars enjoy a smoke. Here’s who is a fan of lighting up…

Which celebrities smoke?

Kate Winslet

The Titanic actress, who rolls her own cigarettes, picked up the habit on the set of Sense and Sensibility when she was 19.

Speaking to Vanity Fair in 2008, the star said: “I don’t smoke around my kids.

“Like that makes it any better that I smoke at all, because obviously it doesn’t. But I don’t smoke in the house.

“I mean, I had a cigarette this morning, which is because I hadn’t been. Coffee and a cigarette: bingo!”

Liam Payne

Liam previously told how he’s quit smoking after becoming a dad to baby Bear.

He told Kiss FM: “I stopped smoking, that’s the best thing ever. Honestly, anyone out there who’s trying to stop smoking, just do it, honestly.

“I just did cold turkey, I knew my son was coming, and I was like, I’m not gonna be smoking with my son, that’s not right

“My life’s not my own any more now, it’s not mine to decide, so smoking had to go.”

However, the pop star was spotted puffing away a few months later, admitting that “everyone has their vices”.

Zayn Malik

Another former 1D-er, Zayn Malik, is also a fan of lighting up.

The pop star has been spotted puffing away on numerous occasions throughout his career, and even has a tattoo on his hand of a woman’s lips with smoke curling out.

He regularly posts smoking selfies to Instagram, prompting fans to beg him to quit.

As news of Zayn and Gigi Hadid’s relationship breaking down was made public in March, the 25-year-old was spied having a smoke while soaking up the sun.

Gwyneth Paltrow

She famously enjoys a healthy lifestyle and dedicated workout regime, but it seems even Gwynnie has a vice.

The mum-of-two, who recently wrote a healthy eating cookbook, admits she allows herself one cigarette per week.

Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar about her guilty pleasures in April, she said: “My one light American Spirit that I smoke once a week, on Saturday night.”

In December 2017, we revealed she took lessons on how to smoke dope using a vaping device.

The clean-living actress enlisted the help of celebrity cannabis guru Maya Cooper in California, where the drug is legal.

Miley Cyrus

There have been numerous shots of Wrecking Ball star Miley Cyrus walking around with cigarettes.

Miley Cyrus revealed she has ditched drugs and plumped for clean living after suffering a harrowing nightmare in which she witnessed herself DIE live on TV.

Whether or not the odd cigarette is allowed is another question.

Jessica Alba

She may be a clean-cut star, but this mum-of-three is frequently spotted enjoying the filthy habit.

The Sin City actress reportedly turned to fags to ditch her pregnancy weight after giving birth to daughter Haven in 2011.

A source close to the star said: “She’s been chain smoking lately to keep her appetite at bay.

“Jessica struggled with an eating disorder in her teens and when she’s under pressure to look good for a part, she can slip back into extreme behaviour.”

Mel B

Spice Girl Mel B has been captured smoking many times, but that hasn’t got in the way of her releasing several fitness DVDs.

She even has a fitness game for PlayStation which includes meal plans and exercises.

Mel also has a three-disc fitness DVD series that she released in 2008.

Keira Knightley

She’s been known for having a smouldering cigarette between her lips on set — but who knew the stunning actress was partial to a puff off-screen too?

The English rose has been caught puffing on an unsightly brown cigar as she strolled the streets with a guitar slung across her shoulder.

It looks like she’s taken a leaf out of rock star hubbie James Righton’s book.

Celebs Caught Smoking Weed: You’ll Never Guess Who!

Celebs caught smoking weed? Scandalous – even Snoop Dogg? Say it ain’t true! It’s 2019 and people have finally started to catch on…

As we know, smoking does nothing but bad things for you – yes? No? We would like to think so, anyway….It rots your teeth, clogs up your lungs and gives you bad breath.

Over the years people have called for the legalization of marijuana and even Seth Rogan has even decided to launch his own cannabis company! Famous actresses such as Drew Barrymore, Charlize Theron and Cameron Diaz have also confessed to a love of weed.

It might be looked at as a dirty habit and not one that you openly air to the world, you might find yourself discretely shuffling off to the smoking shelter to quickly get your fix, you might even find yourself feeling ashamed at your habit…But when you’re a high profile celeb, you unfortunately don’t have the luxury of keeping the habit under wraps. As soon as you spark up, so do the paps.

With high times a flowing, sit back and enjoy this list of celebrities who smoke weed (which you maybe didn’t know about…) whilst feasting your eyes on some unsightly pictures because- let’s be honest – nobody (except Audrey Hepburn) can possibly look good whilst taking a drag.

Lady Gaga

She’s known for her outlandish style (that meat dress) and behaviour, and apparently also her smoking habit…

Where’s the pap, paparazzi?

Speaking of her marijuana habit, Lady Gaga admitted to smoking saying that:

“I want you to know it has totally changed my life and I’ve really cut down on drinking. It has been a totally spiritual experience for me with my music”

Celebrities Who Quit Smoking

Most of the public has a fascination with what celebrities do, where they go, how they dress, who they are dating and even what they “tweet” about on Twitter. It is terrific when the celebrities use their star power to show the way to something that improves health.

One of the greatest things any person who is a smoker can do to improve their health and extend their life is to stop smoking. Everyone who has faced this challenge knows that it is not easy. Relapses are common. A 2013 Gallup poll, asked smokers how many times they seriously had tried to quit smoking. The answers show that multiple attempts are usually necessary, with 40% saying they tried once or twice, 41% said they tried three to ten times, and 4% said they tried more than ten times. It is the same with celebrities who quit smoking.

Imagine President Obama having to sneak outside to the Rose Garden to have a smoke, because smoking is not allowed in the White House. How embarrassing is that! Moreover, he had to take along his secret service and have them stay outside with him in the cold, just to get a nicotine fix. If the President who is under more pressure than most of us can stop smoking then so can everyone else. Wouldn’t it be terrific if America became the first smoke-free country in the world? That would really be impressive. When thinking about quitting smoking, just remember President Obama’s campaign slogan, “Yes we can.”

President Obama

The president said publicly, he was afraid of his wife who demanded he quit, so her urging and constant nagging helped him.
