Who doesn’t love a great Farmers Market?

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, the popularity of Farmers Markets is growing. What was once a niche shopping experience for the wealthy and ultra health conscious has become mainstream. And to appease the diverse populations that have shown interest in farmers markets, vendors have expanded their offerings. You can now get ice cream, homemade soap and even beer to go along with your organic beets and mushrooms.

And they aren’t just popular in liberal enclaves and on the west coast.

Farmers markets are booming in areas that had trouble making inroads in the past. 20 years ago, you’d never think you’d find farmers’ markets in Kansas City, Detroit or St. Louis.

How do you decide if a farmers market is awesome or not in Iowa?

In order to rank the best farmers markets in Iowa, we had to determine what criteria makes for a good market experience. It isn’t a stretch to assume that great farmers’ markets have a variety of options, are up to date with the latest technology, and are in areas with decent populations. Because everyone should be able to take home some homemade jam, right?

So we researched the internet for a database that contains all that information.

How we crunched the numbers for the Hawkeye State

We threw a lot of criteria at this one in order to get the best, most complete results possible. Using Department of Agriculture data produced for the state of Iowa, along with the government census numbers, we looked at every single farmers market in the state. We paid particular attention to:

  • Number of amenities
  • Each market’s technology improvements
  • Variety of items to buy
  • Nearby population
  • Number of organic vendors

We then gave each market a HomeSnacks Score. The higher the score, the better the farmer’s market ranked. What we found is there seems to be a balanced number of large farmers markets near major city centers as well as awesome farmers markets in smaller communities. That’s the way it should be!

101 Best Farmers Markets in America for 2017

Farmers markets are an incredible resource. Not only do to they provide locals with access to wonderful produce, they also offer the chance for people to come face to face with the farmers, artisans, and purveyors, allowing education to become a part of the equation.

Talking directly with the people who are growing and nurturing food gives people the chance to understand so much more about the food they are buying as well as the chance to learn how to use it to its fullest potential.

An incredible aspect of learning how to cook is the opportunity to understand food and how to use ingredients to achieve the best flavor. This process starts with finding the right produce, and farmers markets are the best place to begin.

In addition to providing fresh produce to the community, the Farmers Market Coalition reports that farmers markets play a large role in preserving farmland, helping to support healthy communities, increasing access to nutritious food, promoting sustainability, and helping to stimulate local economies. It’s a win for everybody!

In this report listing the country’s top 100 farmers markets, 41 states are represented, with California, New York, Minnesota, and Washington State having the highest market share (pun intended) in terms of coveted positions.

When we set out to put this list together, we evaluated a number of key farmers market qualities to determine who to even consider — after all, there are more than 8,500 registered farmers markets in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farmers Market Directory.

First and foremost we looked for the farmers themselves. We wanted our farmers market list to be produce-centric and to place emphasis on local farm participation over local artisan involvement — an ongoing goal of the Daily Meal team.

Another main facet of our criteria revolved around the community and overall atmosphere at the market — local reviews from actual community members and marketgoers carried significant weight in this process.

Markets that included educational seminars, kids programs, or anti-hunger campaigns earned a good bump up on the list as well. Other rating parameters included the affordability of produce, accolades or recognitions, and, of course, quality of produce.

Take a look at the rankings to see how your own farmers market fared, and let us know if we missed any of your favorites! Also check out The Daily Meal’s city pages for maps and other details on farmers markets in 23 cities around the U.S.

Everything to Know About the Des Moines Farmers Market

In the great state of Washington, excellent produce abounds as the tradition of organic farming has deep roots in the fertile soils of the Pacific Northwest. This year, the city of Des Moines near Seattle brings back their renowned Des Moines Waterfront Farmers Market, creating a dazzling showcase of local produce and many other fine products from the best independent businesses in the state. Here’s everything you need to know before you visit this signature farmers market.

What is the Des Moines Waterfront Farmers Market?

Each Saturday this summer, the city of Des Moines will hold a farmers market featuring growers from across the state at the beautiful Des Moines Marina, which offers a stunning view of the Puget Sound. Originally, the Des Moines Waterfront Farmers Market was established by growers and artisans themselves, seeking a venue to promote and sell their products to residents of the city. Over time, the Des Moines farmers market became a famous attraction drawing citizens from well outside the city of Des Moines.

Today, the farmers market is organized by a board of residents committed to ensuring the quality of vendors and the smooth operation of daily activities. In addition to Saturdays at the Marina, the Des Moines Waterfront Farmers Market will also be available to the public on Wednesday nights in July and August, an addition to the schedule made possible by overwhelming demand from locals in the area.

Signature Selections from the Des Moines Farmers Market

While the Des Moines Waterfront Farmers Market offers a wide range of products for sale, from artisanal cheeses to fresh fruits and vegetables and an abundance of delicious preserves, there are a few vendors that stand out among the crowd at this celebrated farmers market. Hayton Farms, for example, is a premium grower of an assortment of berries, including different varieties of blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries. For those who need their berry fix, or those looking for the ideal ingredients for a scrumptious berry pie, this Des Moines farmers market could be the key.

Meanwhile, Bees in the Burbs brings quality honey products to Des Moines and surrounding communities. Their distinct booth sells not only pure, organic honey, but a variety of bee-derived products including beeswax candles and bars, as well as equipment and materials for home beekeeping. Their hand-crafted, designer products are an example of the integrity and ingenuity present in all areas of the Des Moines Waterfront Farmers Market.
