Fruit-infused water is one of the latest trends in water bottles, and unlike some trends, this one actually makes a lot of sense. Flavoured water started gaining popularity about ten years ago, so it was only natural that this would eventually lead to further innovations in the field. This particular innovation is great because it is both a healthier and cheaper alternative to buying flavoured water.

And then this happened.

Basically, it works a lot like tea. Although referred to as fruit infusers, you can put anything you want in there – mint, cucumbers, tomatoes. (You could even put in roast beef, but I wouldn’t recommend it.) The fruits, vegetables, leaves and whatever else sit in a special chamber that allows the water to soak up their flavours and nutrients while keeping the infused ingredients intact so they’re not floating around your water.

That’s the basics. Different water bottles have different infusion and bottle setups, but they all aim to accomplish the same thing, improving the taste and nutritional value of your water.

The weather app on my phone is telling me that it is going to be 118 degrees in Arizona on Saturday (insert crying emoji here).

Since Arizona heat makes you feel as if you are getting tossed around in a heated dryer, we have to find ways to not only cool off but keep hydrated during the summer months. I have just the solution!

I am always looking for ways to increase my daily water intake. Sometimes I will realize that it’s been days since I have had a glass of water, and that’s just no good. I have been trying a few infused water recipes to add flavor to my plain H2O to make it more palatable to drink. I found a fun mason jar lid insert that helps me a ton.

Makes 1 serving
Prep Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • water (the amount will depend on the size of your jar or water bottle)
  • 1 quart mason jar or water bottle

Strawberry-Basil Infused Water:

  • 1 cup strawberries, halved
  • handful fresh basil leaves

Cucumber-Lemon Infused Water:

  • 1 cup cucumber slices
  • 1 lemon, sliced

Pineapple-Jalapeño Infused Water:

  • 1 cup pineapple chunks
  • 1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and sliced

Honeydew-Blackberry Infused Water:

  • 1 cup honeydew melon chunks
  • handful blackberries

Grapefruit-Mint Infused Water:

  • ½ ruby red grapefruit
  • handful fresh mint leaves

Directions

  1. Wash and cut your desired fruit.
  2. Place the fruit and herbs into your mason jar or water bottle, and add enough water to fill it up.
  3. Either drink immediately, or screw on the lid and refrigerate for a few hours, up to overnight.

Millions of Americans guzzle gallons of soda every year. Sodas have gone from being an occasional treat to becoming a beverage that is consumed daily, even replacing water for many people. A typical can of regular Coke contains over 9 teaspoons of sugar, that is 39 grams of sugar. The recommended daily allowance of sugar, according to the American Heart Association, is 6 teaspoons for women and 9 teaspoons for men. Just a single can of Coke takes you over your daily allowance. “According to the USDA, 16% of calories in the typical American’s diet come from refined sugars and half of those calories come from beverages with added sugar.”

According to the Harvard School of Public Health, “People who consume sugary drinks regularly, 1 to 2 cans a day or more, have a 26% greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes than people who rarely have such drinks.”

Get excited about drinking more water with these flavorful infused water recipes! Not only will the infused water keep you refreshed and hydrated, but you’ll also load up on the health-benefits offered by the fruit, veggies and herbs.

We all know that we should be drinking plenty of water each day. My recommendation is half your body weight in ounces, but even more if you’re exercising intensely or sweating a lot. Plain water is great, but sometimes it can get a wee bit boring. For this reason I lean on sparkling water (I have a La Croix obsession) and homemade infused water. Both are great options when you’re craving something with a little flavor, but want to skip the added sugar and/or artificial sweeteners.

There are so many different infused water combos you can make, but today we’re highlighting six of our current favorites and sharing our best tips for infused water sipping.

Let’s start with the basics, shall we?

How to Make Infused Water

The great part about infused water is that it’s so easy to make. All you need is fresh produce (fruit, veggies and herbs) along with cold water. Start by choosing what flavor you want, wash and chop your produce and simply add it to your water.

The amount of produce you use is up to you based on how much water you’re infusing and how much flavor you want to add. Obviously, the more produce you add, the more intense the flavor will be. The intensity will also depend on how long you let the ingredients soak/infuse. Some items (like cucumber, melon, citrus fruits and mint) will add flavor almost immediately, while other items like rosemary, berries, apples and ginger will need to soak overnight.

Infusing can take place at room temperature for about 2 hours, but to prevent bacteria growth infusions should be stored in the fridge if soaking for longer than a couple hours. If you’re making a large batch of infused water that will be sitting out for a party, be sure to add plenty of ice to keep it chilled and prevent bacteria growth.

Some produce can be reused to make a second batch of infused water. Just use your best judgement. If it still looks and smells fresh, it should be fine. I do this often with lemon and limes. Just remember that with citrus fruit, the rind can start to add a bitter flavor after it has soaked a few hours. If this causes an issue for you, you can peel the fruit before using it.

And yes, you can eat the fruit after you’re done drinking your infused water. I do this all the time!

Alright, now let’s get to to the different infused water combos:

Strawberry Thyme Infused Water // Mood Booster

Strawberries are rich in Vitamin C, which is known to reduce stress, while thyme is often used in aromatherapy practices for it’s calming and relaxing effects.

  • 6 chopped strawberries
  • 4 sprigs of fresh thyme
  • 1 quart cold water

Let mixture infuse for at least 2 hours or overnight for full flavor.

Grapefruit Jalapeño Infused Water // Metabolism Booster

This infusion combines two of the best foods for speeding up your metabolism — grapefruit and hot peppers. If you love spicy things and are looking to torch some extra calories this blend is for you.

  • 1/4 grapefruit, sliced
  • 1/2 deseeded jalapeño, chopped
  • 1 quart of cold water

Let mixture infuse for 2 hours. Warning: the longer it soaks, the spicier it will get!

Rosemary Raspberry Infused Water // Recovery Booster

Both raspberries and rosemary are great for muscle recovery so this combo is perfect for sipping after your workout.

  • 1/2 cup raspberries
  • 2-3 sprigs rosemary
  • 1 quart cold water

Let mixture infuse for at least 2 hours or overnight for full flavor.

Blueberry Basil Infused Water // Skin Booster

Drinking water is amazing for your skin, but add in antioxidant-rich blueberries which are loaded with vitamins that promote healthy, plump skin and basil which has oils that help to lower inflammation and slow down the effects of aging and you’ve got yourself a lovely little beauty blend.

  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil
  • 1 quart cold water

Let mixture infuse for at least 2 hours or overnight for full flavor. You can also try muddling the berries for even more flavor.

Cucumber Lemon Infused Water // Detox Booster

Cucumber lemon infused water is wildly popular and for good reason. This combo is alkalizing, aids in digestion to help flush toxins from your system and reduces your appetite. Add mint for even more digestion support. One sip of this cucumber lemon combo and you’ll feel like you’re at a spa.

  • 1/4 cucumber, sliced
  • 1/2 lemon, sliced
  • 1 quart cold water

Let mixture infuse for at least 2 hours or overnight for full flavor.

Grapefruit, Lemon and Lime Infused Water // Immune Booster

This citrus combo is loaded with Vitamin C, the ultimate vitamin for boosting your immune system and keeping you feeling your best.

  • 1/4 grapefruit, sliced
  • 1/2 lemon, sliced

How To Make Infused Water

Each of the recipes included in this post makes 1.25 liters (5 cups) of infused water. But do feel free to double or even triple the recipes, add ice and extra garnishes as you like.

Infused Water Recipe Instructions:

  1. Add the fruit and herbs to a pitcher or container, then pour in the water.
  2. For stronger more intense flavor, muddle or bruise the fruit and herbs using the handle of a spatula before adding to the container.
  3. Allow the water to infuse for a minimum of 6 hours and up to 12 hours in the refrigerator.

Chef’s Tip: slice and dice your fruits with a sharp knife at the last minute so that they are as fresh as possible.

Chef’s Tip: citrus fruits can make your infused water bitter if left in too long. So I recommend removing them after a couple of hours.

Great question and the answer is yes. You can make fruit infused water ice cubes. Simply remove the fruit and then freeze the water in an ice cube tray. You can then add the infused ice cubes to a wide variety of beverages, such as:
