31 Free Things To Do With Your Boyfriend That Are Actually Fun

Relationships are expensive.

Endless Saturday brunches, romantic mid-week drinks and two birthday dinners per year will set your credit card statement back more than you ever thought possible.

Love is free, but dating — especially long-term — is equal the cost of putting your first hypothetical child through a four-year university.

Dating shouldn’t have to be the reason you can’t afford organic spinach at Whole Foods (just kidding, you can’t afford anything at Whole Foods). Instead of breaking the bank, spend your weekends getting to know each other for free.

1. Start the day with a good morning text. Your parents still pay for your cell phone, so it doesn’t cost a penny.

2. Text back and forth about the state of the world, by which I mean how much you’d like to be spooning each other.

3. Send one emoji that spirals into an all-out emoji war. It ends with you both sending kissy faces until you feel slightly nauseous from all the sweetness.

4. Plan to try cooking a breakfast frittata together like Mr. and Mrs. Martha Stewart.

5. Once he’s at your place, remember you didn’t go grocery shopping this week and, therefore, have none of the necessary ingredients.

6. Resort to eating toast, instead.

7. Blink coyly at him until he either agrees to wash the dishes or asks if you have an eye infection.

8. Make an attempt at being cultured by planning to attend an exhibit at your local art museum.

9. Realize you’ve both forgotten which ones offer free admission.

10. Decide to educate yourselves anyway, scrolling through Twitter for vague headline updates.

11. Argue about whether or not the sweatshirt you stole from his dresser six months ago is his (Spoiler alert: it is).

12. Lie to him. It’s for the best.

13. Make up and exchange kisses until your roommate makes audible retching noises.

14. Agree she has a fair point, then head out the door.

15. Notice your neighbor walking her new puppy. Collectively coo at it until she gives the pair of you strange looks.

16. Discuss a future life where you two own a luxury home, twelve Golden Retrievers and your own businesses.

17. Panic about the future of your relationship, then decide now is not the time to think about it.

18. Volunteer to walk dogs at a nearby animal shelter instead of adopting one.

19. Feel slightly less clammy and nervous about the whole thing.

20. Take a scenic stroll. Bonus points if you hold hands.

21. Pick a particularly Instagrammable view and snap a photo.

22. Immediately decide one of you is doing that weird smile and shoot it a second time.

23. Upload to Instagram, avoiding all and any couple hashtags.

24. Return to your apartment and decide to break out a board game. Board games are underrated.

25. Choose Monopoly, then immediately regret the choice.

26. Be reminded that one of you is insanely competitive when a simple game becomes a fight to the death over Park Place.

27. Surrender gracefully to your loss. Just kidding, get irate about the entire match and its subsequent unfairness.

28. Declare a truce and decide to watch “Star Wars.”

29. Recite every single line of “The Empire Strikes Back” in sync. You unquestionably get to be Han Solo.

30. Remember exactly why you’re perfect for each other.

31. Vow never to play Monopoly again.

One of the things that works to keep relationships alive is spending quality time with each other. In this day of the information age, it is becoming increasingly difficult to carve out the necessary time to nurture our relationships. What with long work hours, helping kids with their homework, transporting them around to their extracurricular activities, getting dinner, cleaning up and going through the bedtime routine, what time is left?

Unless you orchestrate the time for your relationship, other less important things will crowd in and take what precious little time you do have. Pick a night that will be “date night” with your partner and make a game out of being as creative as you can be. Try to see how many things you can do without spending money.

To get you started, I’ve come up with some suggestions to help you for the next year. What follows are 52 ideas for how to spend creative time together without spending money. Feel free to add or modify any of the items on the list to suit your particular relationship and circumstances.

1. Take a drive to look at the Christmas decorations.

17. Put on old clothes and mud wrestle after some drenching rain.
18. Give each other a massage.
19. Play catch—football, baseball, softball or Frisbee.
20. Go to a car dealer and test drive the car of your dreams.

22. Dance together.

51. Play in the fallen leaves.
52. Create an exciting scavenger hunt that ends in your bed.

Now you have 52 suggestions for things to do with your partner for every week of the year divided by season. Certainly you don’t have to follow my suggestions. Feel free to add your own or to repeat your favorites as often as you’d like.

The main point is not to see how kinky you can get. The idea is to keep your relationship alive by making time together a priority. It is important that you find things to do as a couple that you can both enjoy. If you have vastly different interests then you can enter this with the spirit of taking turns and each agree to happily participate in the activity chosen by the one whose turn it is that week.

As long as you make a habit of making your relationship a priority and allocating time each week for rejuvenation of the feelings that attracted you in the first place, then you stand a good chance of staying together for the long haul.

Please don’t let insidious boredom enter into your relationship through the back door. This is what frequently happens when we are busy placing other things ahead of our time for each other. You know what I mean—the job, the kids, our friend in crisis, etc. There will always be a competing interest for the time you’ve set aside for each other.

Other than natural disasters, threat of death or major crises, do not allow your time together to be invaded by any outside forces. Make sure to create opportunities for you to do things together without outside influence. With more than 50 percent of today’s marriages ending in divorce, make this small investment in the longevity of your relationship. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

What’s stopping you? Start today.

Listen, I get the appeal of Netflix. How are you expected to leave your A/C-blasting apartment when just this month, Netflix dropped new seasons of Queer Eye, Glow, and Dear White People? (*in JVN voice* can you believe?) I don’t know about you, but the opportunity to sit at home with your S.O. while snugglin’ up to some Antoni sounds waaay better than stepping outdoors to spend $27 on a cocktail.

But you guys, it’s summer! And unless you live in an area that has year-round good temps (honestly, #Jealous), we should be seizing the day on this beat weather. As sad as it makes me to say this, Ruth from Glow can wait. Here are 25 other activities you can do with your S.O. besides just Netflix and chillin’.

1. Go on a bike ride. I promise, it’s actually kind of fun? Not only do you get some fresh air with your partner, but you also get in a tiny lil workout that doesn’t feel much like a workout at all.

2. Cook your favorite take-out meal. Peep your Seamless account and see what the recurring to-go dinner in your queue is. Then head online to find a recipe and stop by the grocery store to pick up the ingredients. You’re about to make some bomb AF pad Thai!

3. See a local concert. There’s live music everywhere, you just have to find it. Stroll through downtown and listen to the musicians on the street. Or check online for local writers’ rounds.

4. DIY something for your apartment. Whether it’s something to hang up or finally putting that table together, working together on a task can be great for your ~communication skills~. FWIW, this “date” works if you really just want your S.O. to help you with something.

5. Go to a local chocolate shop. Take turns trying the chocolates from assortment boxes and guessing the flavor. It’s sexy and erotic, and the brown goodness is actually an aphrodisiac too.

6. Explore a neighborhood in your city that you’ve never been to before. Find some quaint local shops or a new place to eat. If your town isn’t that exciting (or big), just pick a place off in the distance and drive to it. It’s kind of like clicking on a randomly recommended Netflix show without looking at the synopsis or rating first.

7. See a play. It’s like a movie you can watch on Netflix, except it happens right in front of you, live. As in, you could hypothetically touch the performers (don’t actually do that).

8. Have sex. It’s that thing everyone does when they’re not killing each other on Game of Thrones (which you binge-watched on HBO GO, which is basically Netflix). You two can just do it together.

Related Story

9. Go on a picnic. You need to enjoy the outdoors every once in a while. Just bring plenty of sunscreen, since you’re probably pasty white after going through every season of Friends.

10. Hit the gym. Imagine if the hours you spent burning through your Netflix queue were spent at the gym instead. You would probably be bodybuilders by now.

11. Binge-watch…the universe. Go outside at night and just stargaze. Take it all in. Try to find constellations and planets.

12. Go to a museum together. Museums are where people went to learn about historical artifacts before Pawn Stars was available online.

13. Take a painting class together. Classes are like those YouTube how-to videos, except you go in person and actually learn something.

14. Go to an amusement park. Going on all the rides is just like binge-watching in the sense that in approximately eight hours, you will be sooo sick of it.

15. Make cupcakes. Cupcakes are the webisodes of cakes.

16. Play Boggle. You can still do this wrapped in Snuggies, lying on the couch lazily, and eating pizza. If you want to make sure you stay up way too late, play Monopoly.

17. Read to each other. Books are like TV shows that have subtitles the whole time and no pictures (assuming you’re reading at your age level). If you’re looking to do something as passive as binge-watching, get the book on tape and let someone else do the reading for you.

18. Read the same book and talk about it. You can even read separately on the couch and lounge around and discuss stuff afterward, just like you’d do with Lost.

Related Story

19. Binge-listen to Serial. It’s like Broadchurch or Twin Peaks, but you can listen to it in your car. Or in your home while you’re staring at the wall. Either one.

20. Give each other hand massages. It’s not quite as committal as a full-body massage and it doesn’t take as much effort. Think of it as watching the first episode of a show you’re not sure about.

21. Make fun cocktails, like margaritas with salt on the rim, and drink them while looking at and talking to each other. As in…not at a screen. Engage each other in actual conversation instead of watching other people have a conversation onscreen because that takes less effort. If you want to really go crazy, turn off your phones too.

22. Make a bucket list of things you want to do together. Hopefully you’ll actually check off some of these things, but just planning stuff to do together can be a ton of fun. You might even learn new things about each other.

23. Read TripAdvisor reviews for restaurants in your area and try one you haven’t been to before. It’s a nice way to venture out of your comfort zone, like watching a show your friend Brad from high school recommended.

24. Look at New Yorker cartoons or other comics you both like. It’ll make you feel classy, like watching Mad Men.

25. Put your phone in airplane mode for an entire day you spend together so you can focus on just each other. When was the last time you didn’t binge-watch a show and just found out what your partner has been up to? They might have some interesting office gossip to share. It might even be as funny as something on The Office.

19 Things Every Couple Should Do Together, According To Reddit

It’s no secret that couples can do a lot of really weird things together. However, there are also a number of things every couple should do together — and yes, some of them are still weird. Wondering what they might be? Good news: People all over the world are happy to share their thoughts with you. Isn’t the Internet great?

Redditor ashultz95 posted a thread to AskReddit the other day, simply titled, “What is one thing every couple should do together?” There’s no explaining how some Reddit threads take off and others don’t, but this one most definitely gets filed under “Threads That Took Off,” because it’s at over 7,000 comments right now, and still growing.

And not only that, but it’s actually full of good advice. True, when you get far enough down in the thread, you start seeing a lot of repeats. But hey, maybe that just goes to show how sound those pieces of wisdom are in the first place. Some of the suggestions are practical, some are goofy, and a ton of them make great date ideas, but they all generally have one thing in common: They’re about fostering communication. I would argue that good communication is the most important thing required for a functional relationship, so any activity that works on either building or maintaining it is probably something worth doing.

Here are 19 of my favorite responses. Head on over to AskReddit to see many more.

1. Try Each Other’s Hobbies

You don’t have to make them your own hobbies. Heck, you don’t even have to like them after you try them. But it’s worth giving them a shot at least once — it might help you understand or see your partner in a whole new way.

If you’ve either already tried this or know for a fact that you both hate each other’s hobbies, though, you can also …

2. Try a New Hobby Together

That’s fun, too.

3. Go On a Road Trip

I thought about labeling this one simply, “travel together” — but the kind of traveling makes a difference, too, so I’m sticking with road trip. You never really know someone until you’ve been stuck in a car with them for days on end.

4. Work on a Puzzle

Cooperative problem solving is a beautiful thing. And hey, if puzzles aren’t your jam, you could also try this:

5. Use Your Kitchen Table For Its Intended Purpose

Confession: My SO and I don’t do this. We used to when we first started dating, but it’s kind of fallen by the wayside in the intervening years. We do, however, have dinner out once a week, which kind of accomplishes the same thing. While it’s true that the depth of those dinner conversations is sometimes dependent on where we go (Two-for-one burger night at the noisy pub? Not so good for talking. Awesome pizza at the Italian place down the street? Surprisingly chill and quiet), it does make a nice change from eating at the coffee table while we catch up on Game of Thrones.

6. Just … Exist

We may be terrible at actually using our kitchen table, but at least we’re awesome at this one. The best relationships — romantic or platonic — are the ones where you can just sit quietly together without feeling like you need to fill the silence.

7. Snuggle

If it leads to some physical action? Awesome. If it’s just snuggling? Also awesome. It’s a win-win situation.

8. Play a Co-op Game Together

I can confirm this. Portal 2 co-op with your partner is the best. It’s even better if you’re not in the same room with each other — it makes you communicate in some really unique ways.

Speaking of communication …

9. This:

I love this. It’s such a great idea, and since communication is key in any relationship, it offers an unconventional way to do it. You might also try something like this:

It’s the stuff romance is made of.

10. Do Something Spontaneous

I get anxious whenever I go into something without a plan, but I’m trying to work on that. It’s kind of like what Lana Molodtsova is doing with her “100 Days of Trust” project — this one is putting your trust in the two of you as a couple to figure it out and have a fun time, no plan required.

11. Improve Your Home

Of course, this one also requires you both to actually care about the color of your walls — but you can sub in just about any type of home improvement project for painting, too.

12. Get Caught in the Rain

Bonus points if you have pina coladas before, during, or after the rainstorm together, too.

13. Let Your Imaginations Run Wild Together

You. I like you.

14. Unplug

If you have the kind of job that requires you to be reachable at all times, this one might be a little trickier to pull off. But it’s definitely worth trying if you can swing it. Uplugging is good for us.

15. Go Canoeing

When you think about it, life is really just one giant canoe trip, isn’t it?

16. One Word: IKEA

Some say that IKEA can make or break most relationships. Never underestimate the power of Swedish flat-pack furniture in contemporary yet timeless designs.

Want more proof? Here you go.

17. Read to Each Other

Sure, you could just watch TV together. But sometimes it’s more fun to be your own entertainment.

18. Work on the Practical Things

Things like creating a budget together may not be the most romantic of activities. They are, however, essential. In addition to playing into that whole “communication” thing we keep talking about, it also helps you figure out whether your priorities — or at least, the ones that really matter when it comes to longevity — are in tune with each other. And that’s definitely worth figuring out sooner, rather than later.

19. This:

You know you’re absolutely comfortable together when you can fart in each other’s presence without it being cause for alarm or embarrassment.

Be a Good Sport

Give Back to Your Community

If you share a passion for animals, volunteer at a local pet shelter. If you’re more interested in hefting a hammer, look into Habitat for Humanity. There are volunteer opportunities for all passions, so just find the one that best suits you both and have fun!

Host a Dance Party

Image zoom

We all know dancing is fun and good exercise. But who wants to deal with the crowds or expensive drinks at the clubs? Turn your own home into a club with a particular theme. You could even do this weekly with rotating themes!

Go to a Playground

Image zoom

Playgrounds aren’t just for mommies and kids. Relive your childhoods and have contests to see who can swing the highest or who can do the monkey bars the most times in a row. Bonus: You’ll torch some extra calories.

Free Zoo Days

Image zoom

Zoos aren’t just for grade school field trips. Most zoos offer a few free days throughout the year. This is a great time to take advantage of the awesome exhibits without having to pay for entrance.

Attend a Farmers Market

Image zoom

Many cities now host farmers markets on the weekends. The food on offer is usually healthier and fresher than store-bought versions, and it’s always interesting to check out the work of local artisans!

Go for a Test Drive

Image zoom

Have fun going for a spin in your dream car or any car that looks like fun. Just beware: You may have to pretend you’re looking to buy, so you’ll want to prepare a cover story.

Go Sledding

Image zoom

If you’re in an area with lots of snow, hit the hills on a downward slope. You could even turn it into a contest to see who comes up with the most successful makeshift sled!

Image zoom

Everyone loves having pictures of their special someone, whether for your wallet, on your desk at work, or just for your home. Have fun with your photoshoot and come up with interesting costumes, backdrops, and angles. (We’ll watch for them on Facebook.)

Enjoy a Scenic Drive

Image zoom

Weather-permitting, a relaxing drive does wondrous things for the soul, and offers a great opportunity for couples to catch up in a quiet, relaxed environment. Bring good tunes and snacks to round out the moment.

Amateur Night at a Coffeehouse

Image zoom

Many local coffeehouses have amateur nights, where people can come in and perform or read poetry and you get a great night’s entertainment for the price of a cup of coffee. You never know what kind of performances you’ll find, so expect the unexpected. If you’re bold, you might even jump in and participate!

Check Out Local Yard Sales

Image zoom

One person’s trash is another person’s treasure. Checking out local yard or garage sales can be a fun way to bond over random things that get you excited. Make it a competition to see who snag the coolest stuff for the lowest price.

Image zoom

Most winery tours are completely free and even offer samples in hopes you’ll purchase a few bottles. It’s a great way to learn about local wines and to spend some quality time together tasting!

Fly the kite that’s been gathering dust in your garage or make a new one. Then head to the park on a windy day.

At-Home Wine Tasting

Image zoom

Turn your dining room into a vineyard’s tasting room with tasty finger foods and vino from your wine rack. Comment on the tannins and oaky flavor of each glass (even if you have no idea what those words mean) and celebrate the “bottomless” nature of your at-home tasting.

Couples’ Charades

Image zoom

While a quiet evening of Scrabble and Pinot is not a bad idea, consider amping up the festivities and hosting a couple’s game night of charades and Pictionary. All you need is paper, a marker, and some creativity to develop fun categories that all will enjoy.

Organize a “Progressive Potluck Dinner”

Image zoom

The concept of a progressive potluck dinner is fun and frugal! Start at one person’s house for appetizers, then go to the next house for the main course, and end up at another house for dessert. Best of all, the clean up gets split between everyone.

At-home Couples’ Massage

Image zoom

Spas are having a field day advertising romantic but expensive couples’ massages. We couldn’t agree more, but we suggest the at-home version to save hundreds of dollars. Lotion? Check. Candles? Check. Most comfortable massage table in the world (your bed)? Done!

Visit a Farm

Image zoom

Some farms offer free tours or visiting hours. Visit the animals and learn about how a farm actually operates (it’s super interesting) and then set up a romantic picnic to enjoy afterwards!

Learn Something New

Image zoom

Bond over your brilliance by learning something new together. Take a cooking class, head over to the local library for a Western-European history session, or test out your foreign language skills by borrowing a beginner’s guide to Italian on CD. You can also tap into the Internet for infinite learning possibilities on culture, history, art, politics, and more.

Sandcastle Competition

Image zoom

This works best if you either live by a sandy beach/ocean or if you have a kid’s sandbox around. Gather up some items that can be used to build castles (bowls, cups, etc.) and see who can build the best one!

Leap into Leaves

Image zoom

If you don’t have a yard of your own, borrow a local park’s leaves to create your pile and dive in! Or, go ‘leaf-peeping’ during peak season and view all the beautiful changing colors.

Rock Skipping

Image zoom

Find a smooth lake surface and start skipping. The peaceful surrounding is perfect for picnics, so pack a meal and enjoy the water all day!

Water Balloon Fight

Image zoom

Hopefully you have some old balloons lying around from a birthday party. Use these to create water balloons and have fun with a giant water balloon battle.

Have a Picnic

Image zoom

Instead of eating sandwiches at home for lunch, pack up and head out to a local park or lake. It’s a great way to spend quality time without the distractions at home! (Try to ditch your cell phones.)

Bake a Sweet Treat

Image zoom

Baking doesn’t require many ingredients-sugar, flour, butter, and a few eggs can create a tasty treat for you and your sweetheart. Find free recipes online for slimmed-down cupcakes or cookies and whip up a batch together. Then enjoy the fruits of your labor!

Re-arrange Your Home

Image zoom

Ever been curious to see what your apartment would look like if it was feng shui’d? Or wanted to see what a crazy floral arrangement would do to liven up the space? This is a great way to enjoy each other and have fun with your creativity! Even if it just means rearranging furniture!

Create a Scavenger Hunt

Image zoom

Scavenger hunts aren’t just for little kids-they’re experiencing a major comeback among the grown-up crowd. Create your own scavenger hunt and explore a nearby town with your significant other. Even if you know the destinations, watching your date discover them is the best part.

The Best Dates In Life are Free!

Although budgets buy freedom they don’t buy fancy date nights! As simple as this sounds it’s one of most challenging parts about changing your personal spending habits since it directly affects our most important relationships.

Like most things learning to be a totally pro frugal dater takes effort but it’s totally doable. You just need to be creative. Like any kind of budgeting it’s a bit of an art form but you’ll soon start to see cheap and fun date nights everywhere.

In the mean time start with these three great free date nights:

Make Dinner at home an Experience

Since you’re going to go grocery shopping and cook meals this week anyway you may as well turn it into a much less ordinary cooking date night! Even if neither of you like cooking you still get to have a lot of fun throwing potato peels at each other.,.

In a nutshell one of you will be making dessert and the other the main meal. The fun comes in when you are each choosing the ingredients that the other needs to use:

  • When you’re at the supermarket flip a coin for who makes which part of the meal
  • Next split up and each buy 3 ingredients that the other person will be cooking with. Limit yourselves to the grocery budget you would have spent on that meal anyway. Add some more fun by trying to keep what you’ve chosen a surprise until you get home – this way you get to sneak around the supermarket trying to avoid each other!
  • Do the ‘big reveal’ at home and get the smalltalk going by talking about why each of you chose what you did. This is just to get the conversation flowing which is really the key to this cooking date night
  • Now it’s up to you – cook away! Don’t forget to have some fun by putting some music on, dancing together (while not holding kitchen knives…) and throwing vegetables at each other

Our house rule is that you can use anything you already have at home so you can cook some more creative meals.

Chalk Chase (the cheapest non-free date)

Ok so this one isn’t free but there’s going to be $3 in the spare change tin and it’s a total blast!

Long story short you are going to leave a trail of chalk arrows on the pavement which guide the way to a small present. Later you’ll both come back however you’ll be acting all chilled as though you don’t know what’s going on.

its totally simple to set up:

  • Grab a small block of chocolate ($2) and a box of chalk ($1)
  • Head to a nearby park by yourself before the date starts and and hide the present somewhere
  • Walk away from the destination and draw chalk arrows on the ground, trees and walls to guide the way. Mix it up a little using some romantic slogans like You’re sweet or Keep going beautiful
  • Ask your partner if they want to go for a walk/run/bicycle ride together. Just act natural as though nothing is out of the ordinary
  • Eventually you will get to the start of the chalk arrows where you’ll have to work at not letting the cat out of the bag. Once they notice the marks play along with the game as though you are not sure why they’re there – simply suggest that you could follow them
  • At the end of the chalk chase give a hint they should look around for a special something… the penny will drop as they realise it’s all a setup that you’ve done just for them! Priceless

Park Run Date – Getting Fit the Fun Way!

Perhaps you’re one of those people who love 5:30am boot camp but for the mere mortals (like us) we found we needed this extra trick to get us going. It’s all about merging two activities into one and making them both better:

  • Getting Fit – everyone starts but it’s a challenge to keep going
  • Date night – lots of fun but it’s hard to come up with new ideas after a while

What’s the trick to solve this? A weekly Park Run! (absolutely free!)

It’s a running/walking group that started about a decade ago – back then it was just a handful of friends but now it’s world-wide! (there’s even one in our small country town down under in Australia so there’s a pretty good chance there’s one near you).

There’s nothing intrinsically unique about the actual run – it’s just a 5km (3 mile) track through a park so you could choose any running group in your area. We like this group since they have a great volunteer ethos and it starts a little later in the day (sleep ins…)

Amanda and I have found it to be a great way to get fit while connecting since we can smash down a breakfast at a cafe afterwards. This gives it a great date-morning feel and we’re still getting fit.

Volunteer – Bonus idea!

This one sounds boring at first but some of the best memories you’ll ever make are working together on something. After all dates together are really just about finding something you will both enjoy.

Here’s 5 great ways to do a Volunteer Date are:

  • Animal rescue center – totally rewarding if you love anything cute and in need of a good bath
  • Support the organisers of Park Run: great if you both like fitness
  • Random acts of kindness – you don’t need permit, insurance, and red tape in order to do something worthwhile in your community – just get out there and do it! Some great ideas are:
    • Cleaning up that rubbish pile that’s been building up in your local park
    • Mowing that older neighbour’s lawn
    • All those abandoned shopping trolleys really need a home!
  • There’s bound to be a local charity group or church that would love some extra hands to help do more good stuff
  • Donate blood (don’t forget the terrible vampire jokes)

Our Story / BIO

Elliott + Amanda used to go on huge date nights. Theatre, expensive dinners, pricey shopping trips – you name it! Then they both started businesses and had to shrink their budget. They had to say goodbye to the fancy stuff and instead bust out some creativity for how to connect on the cheap!
