I’ve always wanted to try Sugarbearhair vitamins, so I was more than happy to receive one month’s worth of sweet gummy bears (as pr) to see if they would work. Now I’ve finished my jar and I took before and after photos to show you the results.


Do Sugarbearhair vitamins really work? How?

To give you the quick answer – yes. Eating biotin in my experience is pretty foolproof way to make your hair grow longer and stronger. It usually helps your lashes and nails as well. I’ve eaten biotin before, so I expected to see some results from these gummy bears as well.

I feel like one month (the recommendation is two gummy bears per day, so one jar is enough for one month) was enough. Now that I think of it, I think it’s the perfect time. The other vitamins I’ve eaten before have lasted for two or three months, and for me that was too long. I could definitely see hair growth then, but possibly in some places, I would prefer not have that. One month was a good time for me to get some volume in my hair, but not have unwanted hair growth in other places of my body. Obviously this is personal, and maybe someone else needs to eat these two months before seeing any results.

How are Sugarbearhair vitamins better than some other vitamins?

I’ll admit – there are more affordable options out there for vitamins containing biotin.

But let’s just face it: the packaging does make a difference. The fact that the vitamin comes in a shape of a candy, that happens to taste very good as well, makes a difference. These gummy bears also happen to be gluten-free, dairy-free and gelatin-free. They don’t only contain biotin, but they also contain A, C, E, B-6, B-9, B-12 and B-5 vitamins. Basically I didn’t have to take any other vitamins with these. It’s a nice addition that there is B-12 in these, since for vegans or vegetarians getting that can be hard. Nowadays I do eat eggs and dairy so I can get it easier, but I used to be vegan.

Swallowing pills and vitamins is not my favorite thing and I don’t remember to take them daily. However – when I was eating *Sugarbearhair vitamins, not once did I forget to take them.

Who doesn’t like sugar, right? I loved having a permission to eat something sweet – you know – for the sake of my hair and wellbeing.

It may be a small change, but it’s a change for the better anyway. After my hair loss struggles, I’m happy to give my hair any help they need.

My hair is quite dry (naturally curly hair is dry by default anyway) and since the lengths are bleached, they are quite brittle. In both of the photos I am in desperate need of a hair cut, but I wanted to leave my hair untouched to show you the results as they are. I did cut my hair after taking these photos – and actually having them cut made them look even healthier and stronger!

When Khloé Kardashian first proclaimed her love for the sky blue, teddy-shaped gummy SugarBearHair Vitamins, I was skeptical, but intrigued. Which is basically the story every time a Kardashian endorsement rolls out with an immaculately-filtered selfie on Instagram.

But this had Khloé’s upload of approval—and no one keeps it more real. Besides, they promise longer and stronger hair, and they’re cute, so what’s really to lose?

A callback to the Flinstone Gummies of my youth, they were 100% more enticing than the fish oil pills (or “gross” vitamins, as SugarBear likes to call them) gathering dust in my cabinet.

The SugarBearHair supplements come in a three-month, three-bottle package, the instructions being that you eat two gummy bears a day. Full disclosure: I’ve only tried a month’s worth at this point. And it’s important to note that as a brand, from the packaging to their language, they’re unicorns-and-rainbows-level saccharine—which might make it hard for a grown-ass woman to take seriously. But that wasn’t the case for this moderately-grown-ass woman. I was all in.

Flavored with natural berries, the SugarBears weren’t Haribo-Gold-level tasty and, okay, yeah, they were a liiiiittle chewy, but limiting myself to just two a day was actually kind of hard.

As for my locks? During the first few weeks, I didn’t really see a difference in my hair. Though my mane is kind of crazy—i.e. processed, curly, frizzy, and big—so it’s inherently hard to tell. But hand to heart, over the last week I’ve been struck by how much better my curls look. They’re tighter, shinier, softer, and overall look less frizzy/damaged. My hair also seems longer, despite having more compact curls.

The only difference in my routine? These gummies. Okay, and a little bit of Oribe’s Styling Crème. But considering the SugarBears are carefully formulated with biotin, folic acid, and Vitamin D—all linked to hair growth and health—it makes *total* sense.

At $84, the SugarBearHair system isn’t cheap, but if you’re desperate for hair repair, it’s an easy way to introduce more nutrients into your diet. Just don’t expect a Khloé or Kylie (she’s since endorsed them as well) mane in the end. The way I see it, it’s all about improving what you’ve already got.

Do Sugar Bear Hair vitamins really work?

Do Sugar Bear Hair Vitamins make hair shine, nails stronger, and help both to grow? They taste good but are super expensive.

These gummy supplements, labeled as “SugarBearHair Hair Vitamins” were launched in 2016, are extensively promoted, and appear to have become popular, particularly on college and high school campuses. The website that promotes them claims that “The majority of our customers found their nails and skin quality improved over time while taking SugarBearHair.” However, there doesn’t appear to be any published study showing that the specific formula in SugarBearHair improves hair or nails.
The dominant ingredient in SugarBearHair is biotin. The daily requirement for biotin (vitamin B7) is just 30 mcg (micrograms) for adults and 25 mcg for 14 to 18 year-olds, and nearly everyone gets this and more from the foods they regularly eat (see the Biotin section of the B Vitamins Review). A daily serving (2 gummies) of SugarBearHair is listed as providing 5,000 mcg of biotin — 167 times the adult daily requirement. The apparent rational for this mega dose is a small study (by a pharmaceutical company) published in 1990 that showed a 25% increase in nail thickness and a reduced tendency for split nails when 2,500 mcg of biotin was taken twice daily for 6 to 9 months, and another study suggested that biotin deficiency may be common among women complaining of hair loss. However, there are no studies to suggest that biotin supplementation improves hair growth or texture in people who are not deficient in biotin.
On, the current price for SugarBearHair Hair Vitamin is about $30 for a bottle of 60 gummies — or about 50 cents per gummy, so $1 per day for 2 gummies, which is very expensive based on its ingredients. If you want to get 2,500 mcg of biotin, you can get it for much less from other supplements on the market. For example, in our B Vitamin Supplements Review we’ve tested and Approved hair, skin, and nails formulas that provide the same 2,500 mcg of biotin but cost just 10 to 13 cents per pill.
SugarBearHair appears to be safe based its listed ingredients: None of the ingredients exceed Upper Tolerable Intake Levels. The gummies include moderate amounts of vitamins A, B5, B6, B12, C and D, E and relatively small amounts of iodine, choline, and inositol. However, when we tested SugarBearHair gummies in the lab, we found that they contained more than 160% of the listed amounts of certain vitamins and, therefore, was Not Approved for quality. Also, don’t expect these gummies to provide all the vitamins and minerals that are found in a multivitamin/multimineral — it does not contain any iron (important to women prone to iron deficiency) or calcium (to support bone growth, particularly in young women). If you need these, there are many good multivitamins that provide all the essential vitamins and minerals and cost as little as 7 cents per day. One of these, plus a biotin supplement, would provide everything in SugarBearHair and more at roughly half the price.
Be aware that high doses of biotin can interfere with certain medications and laboratory tests, including tests used to diagnose thyroid disease and heart attacks, so be sure to tell your doctor if you are taking biotin.

The bottom line on SugarBearHair Hair Vitamins:

SugarBearHair Hair vitamins are not likely to help you unless you have a vitamin deficiency. If you do a have deficiency, other supplements are available that are much less expensive. Also, be aware that these vitamins don’t provide minerals such as iron or calcium, which would be found in a multivitamin/multimineral supplement. If you take SugarBearHair Hair vitamins, tell your doctor that you are taking high-dose biotin, as it may affect results of blood tests.

My Instagram feed has recently seen a resurgence of sponsored posts and ads for SugarBearHair, a hair supplement made popular by the Kardashians and a handful of Bachelor contestants. SugarBearHair is a chewable multivitamin with a formula that claims to support the strength and shine of your hair. Though hair and beauty supplements have been around for decades, SugarBearHair exploded onto the market with celebrities and social media influencers claiming that these tasty gummies gave them Rapunzel-style hair. Of course, these “#sugarbearambassadors” were all paid to make those claims. With questionable marketing tactics and a cost of $65 per month, I decided to dig into the research and try SugarBearHair myself. Here’s my honest review.

The Research

SugarBearHair contains 13 vitamins and minerals associated with optimal hair health. Most notably, taking two SugarBearHair gummies daily will provide 167x your daily biotin needs, a B vitamin also known as vitamin H due to its long time association with hair health. SugarBearHair also provides 100 percent of your daily B12 needs, as well as significant amounts of both folate and zinc. Research shows that severe deficiencies of these nutrients can visibly impact the health of hair leading to increased hair shedding, dullness, and loss of colour. (Here’s more on why your hair is falling out.) When treated with a supplement, these symptoms can be resolved and hair can return to its natural shine and fullness. The limitation of hair formulated supplements is that there is no evidence to suggest that their use will improve the quality of your hair when a deficiency doesn’t exist. In other words, consuming more doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll continue to see an improvement beyond that.

SugarBearHair also contains 100 percent of your vitamin D needs, as well as significant amounts of vitamins A, C, and E. While these nutrients are known to be involved in the hair follicle cycle in some way, their exact role is not fully understood.

My Review of SugarBearHair

The Kardashians were right about one thing – these gummies really are delicious. As someone with a sweet tooth, I had no problem remembering to take my two gummies daily. I often use heat styling tools on my highlighted hair, so I’m always open to trying a new product that can reduce hair damage or give my hair an overall shinier and healthier appearance. After trying this supplement for 30 days, I can’t say that I noticed a difference in the growth, shine, or overall appearance of my hair. I’ll keep my $65 per month to spend on groceries. Nutrition is closely related to the health and appearance of hair. Poor nutrition, in particular, can have a dramatic impact on hair health. For example, prolonged restriction of calories and macronutrients, including for the purpose of weight loss, can cause increased hair shedding and dullness. In Canada, as much as 35 percent of adults have low intakes of vitamin B12, B6, folate, and zinc, however, severe deficiencies of these nutrients are uncommon. If you’re worried about the appearance and health of your hair, consider seeing a dietitian to assess overall adequacy and quality of your diet before investing in expensive supplements. You may also want to try a topical hair treatment.

And if you’re interested in trying out a hair supplement, there are other options on the market with similar formulas at a fraction of the cost. Look for a supplement that contains vitamin B12, folate, and biotin, but don’t get caught up in supplements providing beyond 100 percent of your daily needs because there’s no proven additional benefit. The company claims that every “SugarBear is packed with a specific blend of vitamins and nutrients to help support healthy hair and nails.” But what exactly is in the little candy bears? The main active ingredient is 5,000mg of biotin (for two gummies). According to the Sugar Bear website, biotin is one of the most important vitamins you can take to promote hair growth. It also supports the health of your scalp and prevents hair loss. According to the Huffington Post, taking the vitamin does improve the keratin infrastructure (a basic protein that makes up hair, skin and nails).

Sugar Bear gummies also contain other vitamins (you can find the exact breakdown of the ingredients here). Basically, the little blue bears act as a multivitamin with a boost of biotin. However, the vitamin is missing protein and iron, both of which are pretty vital for hair growth and your health in general. If you have a poor diet, the blue bears aren’t going to do much to help your hair.

After trying the vitamins for a two months, I’ll admit one thing is true: they are delicious. Seriously, these vitamins taste like candy. The daily dose is two per day, but it’s hard not to eat them by the handful. Which bring up another concern: biotin overdose. The recommend dosage of biotin varies per person and you should always consult with a doctor. It’s possible to consume too much biotin, which can result in the slower release of insulin, skin rashes, lower vitamin C and B6 levels, and high blood sugar levels. So, whatever you do, don’t be like me and eat half the bottle in a sitting. Not only is this not good for you, but it’s a pretty expensive snack. It’s also an added sugar that doesn’t need to be part of your diet. Think about it: this vitamin that packed with glucose syrup and other additives. Kind of defeats the point, right?

Personally, I did not a huge change in my hair over the two months I took the vitamins. However, there are plenty of online testimonies that claim otherwise. The results are going to vary per person. I didn’t mind taking the blue gummies everyday (like I said, they are very tasty). However, you can walk into any drugstore and find cheap bottles of biotin that claim to make your hair and nails both healthier and stronger. Personally I found that by taking a drugstore biotin supplement and eating healthy (these foods in particular), my hair became stronger and shiner.

Overall, if you want to try the gummies, I say go for it. They aren’t bad for you and some people see awesome results. Just remember that they are only really effective in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle. Also, try not to eat too many because those little bears can be seriously addicting.

Walk down the vitamin aisle of any drugstore (or, let’s be real, peruse the pages of Amazon), and you’ll see approximately one-zillion hair supplements, all promising to grow your hair hella long, hella fast. And though I’m the resident skeptic of all the beauty editors in the world, even I have to admit that the five-star reviews and the celebrity Instagram endorsements are somewhat convincing. Like, do hair-growth vitamins really work? Are they the secret to long, shiny, strong hair? Or have we all been taken in by a very convincing, very confusing LIE?! WHAT IS THE TRUTH?!

Since I’m clearly not the only person having this internal crisis, I went ahead and chatted with experts and dermatologists to find whether or not hair vitamins actually do anything—or, even more important, whether they’re even safe to take at all.

Will hair supplements actually grow my hair faster?

So here’s what hair vitamins are supposed to do: Revamp your hair from the inside out with a mix of “hair-friendly” ingredients, like biotin, folic acid, vitamins D, A, C, E, and/or virtually anything else they want to throw in there (supplements and vitamins are not FDA-regulated, meaning brands can kinda say and do whatever they want). Then, after a few months of taking them, your hair is supposed too look longer, healthier, shinier, and stronger, and your scalp’s oil production can speed up or slow down, depending on which brand and type you try.

The thing is, because these pills aren’t backed by government-approved data, and there isn’t really a uniform set of ingredients, strengths, or formulations across brands, there’s never going to be a straight yes or no answer to whether or not hair supplements work. But, if you ask experts (or me, who tried taking them for two months and all I got was zits), their answer is pretty much a big ol’ “NOPE.”

Do hair-growth vitamins work at all?

Okay, so even though vitamins are absolutely necessary and beneficial for your hair, they won’t do much if your body is already stocked with them—which it probably already is. “Most people get all the vitamins they need to manage their hair growth just from their diet alone,” says trichologist Dominic Burg, chief scientist at Evolis Professional.

BUT shouldn’t I take them just in case?! I hear you ask. Sadly, more isn’t merrier here. Even if you ingest triple the vitamins your body needs (don’t), you won’t actually reap triple, or even double, the hair-growth rewards. “Your body only keeps the vitamins it needs, and then it gets rid of the rest,” says Burg. Kind of like pouring water into a glass that’s already 100 percent full. So unless you’re actually missing some key nutrients, you’ll likely end up peeing out the excess pretty soon after you ingest them.

How do I know if vitamin deficiency is affecting my hair?

“There are lot of women running around who are deficient and don’t realize it, because of either dieting, poor nutrition, or intense stress,” says Burg. And when you’re super stressed or not eating enough, “your body will shut down your hair growth first and redirect nutrients and energy to the organs that need it most,” he says, thus leaving you vitamin deficient.

And if you’ve ever experienced a severe bout of physical or emotional stress, you might have noticed a sudden shedding of your hair a few months after (or, if not, congrats! You just figured out WTF was going on with your hair). “It’s a delayed reaction to the stress or diet that usually occurs three months later,” says Burg.

Of course, the only way to know for sure if your body is deficient is to have your levels tested by your doctor, but if you’re, you know, mourning a death in the family while also on a diet, there’s a good chance you’re lacking some nutrients, in which case you’ll likely see some benefits from taking vitamins.

How can I speed up hair growth if I’m healthy?

If you’re not vitamin deficient but still want longer, healthier, stronger hair, then sadly, “supplements will probably do very little for you,” says Burg. That’s not to say they won’t work at all, and maybe you’ll be the lucky wild card (again, there are no mass studies definitively saying yes or no), but, if we’re talkin’ from a point of science here, your odds aren’t great. Not sure what to do? Talk to your doctor. Really. They can give you the thumbs up (or down) before you waste your money—or, worse, mess with your health.


How long do hair supplements take to work?

Regardless of whether you’re vitamin deficient or you’re just a healthy person who somehow magically benefits from hair supplements, you still won’t see results overnight. Or even in a year. Or in five years. Why? “Your hair is dead, and nothing you do internally can affect its density, strength, or health,” says Burg. “Sure, vitamins will help the new hair that you’re growing, but because it grows only half an inch a month, it’ll take 6 to 7 years of taking supplements before your new, healthy hair even reaches your shoulders.” Perspective, huh?

But that’s not to say you won’t see any changes before 2026. “If you’re vitamin deficient, supplements may help reactivate your oil glands after a few months, which can make your hair look shinier and more moisturized,” says Burg. And hey, you might even get the tiniest bit of additional hair growth, but that’s about it.

What about biotin—does biotin really help hair grow?

Sorry (again), but there isn’t a definitive answer as to whether biotin is actually beneficial in helping hair loss or hair growth. According dermatologist to Vivian Bucay, MD, clinical assistant professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center, if you’re taking a stand-alone biotin supplement, you’d need to take at least 5 milligrams to notice a difference—but even then, there’s no guarantees it’ll do anything.


But REMEMBER *waves red flags*: Just because something is available without a prescription or talked about on your IG feed, doesn’t mean it’s 100 percent safe. “People often over-supplement with biotin for their hair, skin, or nails, and that excess biotin can actually affect major medical tests, like an ECG—a test that looks at your heart,” says dermatologist Melissa Kanchanapoomi Levin, MD, founder of Entiere Dermatology and clinical instructor at NYU Langone.

Basically, unless you yourself are a doctor (which, hi, why you here?!), talk things over with an actual MD before trying any supplement.

What are the best hair growth pills?

Okay, so you’ve gotten the green light from your doctor, you’ve gotten your blood tests, you’ve made a deal with your god, and you’re ready to try some hair supplements. Cool. Do not go overboard. Doubling up on supplements can be incredibly dangerous over time—some vitamins get peed out by your system, but others can build up to toxic levels—so only test one supplement at a time, and make sure whatever you ingest is a reputable, well-reviewed formula, like one of these best-selling pills.

Do Hair Growth Vitamins Really Work? I Tried Them For Two Months To See If I Could Get Khaleesi Locks

My hair has always been my thing. Over the course of my life, I’ve done a copious amount of things to it: I’ve curled, crimped, braided, twisted, teased, bound, cut, feathered, and of course, colored; but the most stressful quest of all has been growth — and so I had to finally ask myself: Do hair growth vitamins work?

Now, I had seen ads for these vitamins all over the Internet. I had been on the Instagram pages of different brands, looking at the “Before and After” photos of supposed “users” of the hair growth vitamins with absolutely stunning results. I’ve stressed my growing out process in the past by adding extensions of all forms, including a weave, bonded/fused pieces, and glue-ins (probably the worst things ever). So my inquisitive cells couldn’t help but wonder whether a little solution-in-a-bottle was a more viable option.

For context: A few years ago, I decided to go “Khaleesi Blonde” by way of Daenerys Targaryen hair (another great obsession of mine). After basking in the platinum hair glory for a while, my now icy-blonde locks were at the perfect point to (that’s right) color them yet again. I went through a rotation of blue, pink, and lilac/lavender, feeling like a glorious mermaid unicorn princess the entire time. To this day, despite all the damage, I still say it was totally worth it. But I digress: What I loved even more than perfectly-purple hair was the fact that I had long hair. I’ve always been someone who loved long hair (another reason I love Game of Thrones so much — it rules the realm of hair) and with all the bleaching and coloring of my already fair, thin hair… well, suffice to say, it ceased to grow.

Rather than grow longer (you know, the natural way of things) my hair began to break off at the ends. Constantly. It was so bad that my hair actually kept getting shorter and shorter for a while, without scissors even coming anywhere near me (they were the devil as far as I was concerned). The breakage would happen every time I showered, every time I brushed my hair, and anytime I attempted to style it. Feeling devastated, I immediately rushed to the Internet for a magical hair potion that would instantly make my hair grow long and strong once again… yet the only thing I could find that came anywhere close were the notorious hair growth vitamins.

Call me a skeptic, but I didn’t fully trust the reviews of the “users” that posted their “amazing” results. Because let’s be honest, sometimes these companies may pay people to use their product and give less-than-truthful reviews. Thus, I took it upon myself to purchase a bottle of the magic-hair-pills myself, to see if hair growth vitamins really do work, and if they’re also worth the money. I decided to go with Hairburst hair growth vitamins, them being one of the most popular brands I noticed floating around the good-ol-net. This product claims to “promote healthy hair growth from within,” and though the recommended use is three months, they do claim results within month one. They also say this:

“Our product is of the highest quality and produces fantastic results for our users. We are so confident you will enjoy and embrace your hair journey, we offer a money back guarantee on returned unused products.” —

How are people supposed to know if a product works without actually using it first? Anyway — confusion aside, with this grand claim fueling my excitement, I began what I hoped would be my “hair growth journey.” The vitamins themselves include collagen, biotin, vitamins A, B, and C, folic acid, and several other essential vitamins for hair growth. There are 60 pills in the bottle, which equate to a one-month supply, as you take two pills per day — one in the morning, and one at night — and cost about $37 (plus about $10 shipping). The pills are rather large and taste absolutely horrible, so I had to choke mine down with orange juice (or anything else with a strong taste to avoid gagging). Thank god I was doing this all for the sake of beauty.

I must also note that while I was taking these vitamins, I made sure to take care of my hair in other ways. I decreased styling immensely, trying to limit curling my hair to only once a week. I stopped teasing my hair, and cut out hairspray. I also used a leave-in hair serum on my ends, which locked in moisture and added strength to the previously dyed, dry hair. Oh, and I stopped coloring my hair completely as well (which was, after all, the original reason for my hair’s distress). I was going all-out for this quest.

After choking back two vitamins per day for a month, I was anxious to see if it had worked, of course. It’s said that hair normally grows about half an inch per month. My hair, never being quite normal, grows more slowly — at about 1/3 inch per month. If my hair grew any more than that, I’d consider it a success. As I placed that measuring tape against my scalp and drew it down the length of my hair, my heart sank as I realized my hair grew at the same rate it normally does. One month, and sadly, no change.

I decided to purchase another bottle of hair growth vitamins and give it a try for yet another month, in the event that the results took longer than just one month to really notice (and why not be thorough?). As I continued to take the hair growth vitamins for the second month, however, I noticed my hair growing increasingly greasy.

Now, as I mentioned before, I have very fine hair. I can go three days max without washing my hair normally (after that I need the help of dry shampoo), but taking the hair growth vitamins was making my hair so greasy that I had to wash it every other day (and that was pushing it). I was hoping that this increase-in-grease meant that all the vitamins were getting to my scalp, enriching it and causing my hair growth to boost. Yet again, when I went to measure my hair growth at the end of the month, it grew the normal 1/3 inch.

It’s at this point where I decided to throw in the towel. At the end of the day (er, two months), all the hair growth vitamins did for me was waste almost $100 and give me greasy hair. They really weren’t for me, as much as hoped and dreamed they would give me back the mermaid hair of my dreams.

Instead, I have opted for taking a daily multivitamin for women every day. These vitamins contain most of the same ingredients that the hair-growth pills contain, plus more that are essential for overall health. And it costs around $10 only for a 3-month supply. Once I began taking these, the grease level of my hair returned to normal, and I noticed a general increase in my hair’s strength and shine (even though my hair continued to grow at its normal rate). I’ve also continued to go easy on the styling and teasing, and I still use a hair serum before every blow dry. After a few months using this method, I’ve finally started to notice my hair growing significantly longer.

My advice to anyone who is also trying to start their hair growth/health journey and wants to try hair growth vitamins? Don’t. Although I didn’t use the vitamins for the allotted three month, there was certainly no difference after two. A daily multivariate can give you all the vitamin benefits without the excess cost.

The real key to hair growth success is to take great care of your hair. Stop coloring it, style it the least amount possible, baby it with nourishing products, and take a daily multivitamin for an extra healthy boost. And most importantly of all: Be patient. It took Rapunzel her whole life to grow out her hair, after all.

The hair vitamin market is a booming industry. The effects of hair loss and thinning on self-image and self-esteem have been well documented, and with promises of thick, long locks, and hair restoration, it’s no wonder many people are spending at least $176 million annually for these “miracle-in-a-bottle” supplement pills in a bid for healthy hair. However, there is no conclusive evidence these products actually work. So, are these pills just glorified placebos?

Most hair supplements contain more or less the same ingredients: Vitamin C, Biotin, Vitamin B3, and Vitamin A, all of which have been shown to be essential for hair growth. These elements are also essential for the body to function as efficiently as it can, and many of them can be found in a variety of foods and beverages.

“They’re not made-up pills. Our bodies are already taking them in and they should be a part of our diet,” celebrity hair stylist Devin Toth, of Salon SCK in New York City, told Medical Daily. Toth has worked with celebrities like Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mitchell and fashion model Kate Upton. “Taking them as supplements consistently ensures that those nutrients and vitamins travel through our bloodstream to essential organs, then to our hair follicles and cortex.”

Essential Vitamins Affect Your Hair

Considered one of the most effective nutrients to help grow and strengthen hair, vitamin C creates the collagen protein — an essential component of hair structure. It also helps the blood absorb iron, a mineral necessary for hair growth.

Biotin is a coenzyme that “reacts with enzymes to make amino acids, the building blocks of proteins such as keratin, the protein that hair is made out of,” according to Toth. It is also associated with an improvement in the strength and elasticity of the cortex — the thickest layer of the hair, located between the hair cuticle and the medulla.

Vitamin B3, also known as Niacin, is used to treat high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, but it also keeps the blood flow to scalp high, bringing vitamin nutrients to the hair follicle and keeping the scalp hydrated.

Are these ingredients more effective than placebos when put into pill form? The answer is yes, according to a 2012 double-blinded study on the efficacy of Viviscal hair supplements. Viviscal researchers found the pill safely and effectively promoted significant hair growth in women with temporary thinning hair after 90 and 180 days.

Although the study was funded by Lifes2Good, the owner of Viviscal, researchers maintain the double-blind study design helped to avoid bias. They also noted their results may represent the first description of increased visible hair growth in women associated with the use of a nutritional supplement.

“I think there’s a lot of new evidence backing not just Viviscal but other supplements out there like Nutrafol,” Dr. Ablon Glynis, dermatologist at Ablon Skin Institute and lead researcher of the 2012 study, told Medical Daily. “We’re seeing more and more data, we’re seeing more and more in vitro studies where there are actually finding out what the supplement are doing as far as on the hair follicle.”

“Reach Maximum Capacity”

Knowing that hair supplements are packed with growth-promoting vitamins is reassuring. However, the vitamin industry isn’t strictly regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA classifies vitamins as dietary supplements, and manufacturers are not required to obtain FDA approval before marketing. In other words, it’s not known whether the benefits of any of these dietary supplements outweigh the risks for intended use. What’s more, there is a lack of data showing that these over-the-counter hair supplement products, including biotin supplements, actually work.

“While vitamin deficiencies — notably iron and vitamin D — can contribute to hair shedding, there just isn’t data to support the efficacy of vitamin supplements, like biotin or Hairfinity. And people spend so much money on them,” dermatologist Marie Leger told Medical Daily. Leger, who practices dermatology at NYU Langone Medical Center, said approximately 80 to 90 percent of her patients have tried biotin in a failed bid to restore hair loss before stepping into her office.

Leger isn’t the only one to question this approach. Hair restoration surgeon Dr. Robert Leonard told Medical Daily earlier this month biotin supplements may be a wrong approach to hair loss. “Some people think that taking vitamins like biotin will help reverse their hair loss, but what they don’t realize is that hair loss is genetic, and you can’t really change your genetics,” Leonard said.

Leger said an alternative to over-the-counter hair vitamins is the topical medication minoxidil, or Rogaine, which is backed by substantial evidence demonstrating its efficacy in boosting and regenerating the capacity for hair growth.

“It is thought to work by shortening the shedding portion of the hair cycle (telogen) and prolonging the growth phase (anogen) as well as converting miniaturized hair follicles that you can see with age-related, genetic hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) to thicker hairs,” Leger added.

Toth thinks that, in addition to concern over lack of evidence, many people have reservations about hair supplement products because they have high expectations and get disappointed when they don’t see results right away.

“Vitamins and supplements aren’t miracle drugs, they simply allow your hair to reach its full potential,” Toth said noting that many hair supplements contain a vitamin rich compound. ” maximize what the body is capable of. Your hair needs certain things to reach maximum capacity … that’s what vitamins are for.”

Vitamins works on hair from the inside — they have to travel through the bloodstream into the hair follicles. But since hair is a non-essential body part, said Toth, “it can take longer for it to receive the nourishment from the vitamins.”

Here’s my hair philosophy: “My body isn’t where I’d like it to be, so I’m going to focus on my hair.”

How long did it take to grow my hair out? How do I get my hair to be wavy and stay wavy? How does my hair look so “healthy?” (I’m not positive that my hair does look healthy. Maybe it just photographs well. My hair is very dry. I only have to wash it every 4-5 days)

I’ve had short hair for most of my life except for about a year in high school and a year in college. When I met Todd, I had shoulder-length hair. When I knew he was “the one” I decided to grow it out so I could have long hair for our wedding someday.

My hair is naturally wavy. I let it air dry and then the next day (or later the same day) do the “curl down.” Watch the video in this post for the curl down tutorial.

But the secret to long hair? Is these little guys right here. My hair grew a lot when I was pregnant partly due to pregnancy hormones and the other part was due to Fred, Barney, Wilma, Betty, Pebbles, and Bam Bam.

I didn’t take prenatal vitamins because they made me too sick. My doctor suggested I take Flintstones vitamins instead and they were great for the whole pregnancy.

They also caused my hair to grow, grow, grow. So I continued taking them after Hudson was born. I’ve had a couple of hair cuts where I’ve gotten 2-3 inches cut off since he was born, but it always comes back quickly.

So that’s the secret to my long hair.
