Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) is a tropical fruit cultivated mainly in Southeast Asia. It is now grown in the tropical areas of East Indies, India, China, and Sri Lanka as well (1).

The mangosteen tree has deep green leaves and a dark purple berry-like fruit. The fruit has a 1½-inch thick rind enclosing its flesh (2).

Its flesh is so delicate that it melts in your mouth almost like ice cream! The fruit’s pulp is white or yellowish, with crimson veins. Mangosteen fruit produces a yellow latex-like juice that is uber-flavorful (1), (2).

Mangosteen xanthones – mangostin, gartanin, and isomangostin – can reduce the inflammation caused by Propionibacterium acnes infection, which is commonly known as acne (6).

In a study conducted in Thailand, patients with acne applied mangosteen fruit rind extract on their face for 12 weeks. Mangosteen fruit rind extract showed about 67% reduction of comedonal skin-colored bumps, inflammatory lesions, and scars in these subjects (8).

The xanthones in this fruit also inhibit fungi from Epidermophyton, Alternaria, Mucor, Rhizopus, and Aspergillus species (6).

These xanthones have been proven to induce programmed cell death (apoptosis) in cancerous cells. They have also shown preventive effects against breast, prostate, and colon cancers in laboratory experiments (11), (12).

Mangosteen xanthones employ several cell signaling pathways to stop cancer progression. However, they need in-depth research to be applied to humans. It is best to observe caution before consuming mangosteen products, especially if you are battling cancer (11), (13).

What You Need
  • Mangosteen fruits
  • Other fruits of your choice
  • Sharp knife
  • Electric juice blender/juicer

Are There Any Side Effects Of Mangosteen?

Recent scientific literature claims that there are no side effects of having mangosteen. However, there is insufficient evidence for the same (16).

When used as a weight-loss supplement, mangosteen supplements did not cause any adverse effects. They only brought down body weight and cholesterol levels (20).

But a study reports drug interactions with its extracts. A few Thai fruits, including mangosteen, were able to modify the liver enzymes that are involved in metabolizing certain drugs (21).

What Is Mangosteen and Should You Be Eating It?

Adding an extra serving of fruit to your diet is a no-brainer. Fruit contains tons of fiber, vitamins, and minerals, while also providing a dose of natural sugar to help fight your sweet cravings. (And FYI, only 1 in 10 adults actually get the two servings a day recommended by the USDA.)

But if you want to add more fruit to your diet without adding in more sugar, don’t have access to fresh fruit while traveling, or simply want to expand your horizons beyond your typical grocery store selection, that’s where fruit powders come in. Made primarily from fruits that don’t grow in the United States, these powders are popping up everywhere. Fruit powders-made from dried fruit-pack more nutrition per tablespoon due to their reduced volume. “In the same way dried herbs have three times the nutritional density as fresh, the concept is similar in fruits as dried fruits have more fruit per tablespoon,” explains Lauren Slayton, M.S., R.D., and founder of NYC-based nutrition practice Foodtrainers.

As with so many other healthy trends, “I think people just really like the idea of a very fast, easy solution,” says Mascha Davis, M.P.H., R.D. “They don’t have to worry about going to the market, picking the fruit, and then worrying that it might spoil.”

Of all the new fruit powders available now, though, there’s one that seems to be taking center stage: mangosteen.

What is mangosteen?

Grown in tropical regions like Indonesia and Thailand, mangosteen is a small purple fruit with a thick, fleshy exterior (similar to jackfruit). It has a slightly tart yet refreshing flavor. It’s a delicate fruit that can spoil quickly once harvested, which is why exporting it can be difficult. For a time, mangosteens weren’t able to be legally imported into the United States, and there are still restrictions on it, making it hard to find in grocery stores.

To create mangosteen powder, the fruit is picked at peak freshness and then freeze-dried. The result is a pure mangosteen powder without the need for additives. As the powder includes everything from the rind to the flesh (the parts with the most fiber), it may also help keep you fuller longer, says Davis.

How can you eat or use mangosteen?

The fresh fruit can be peeled and eaten similar to a tangerine. As for the powder, since it can be added to pretty much anything, you can use it in the foods you already make, such as adding it to salad dressings, oatmeal, smoothies, or even baked goods.

What are the nutritional benefits of mangosteen?

Mangosteen as a whole fruit boasts high levels of vitamin C, iron, potassium, disease-fighting phytochemicals and antioxidants, and even fatty acids, according to Davis. “In terms of vitamin C, it’s pretty high, which is great. It’s an antioxidant and it boosts your immune system and also helps brighten the skin,” she says.

So, should you try powdered mangosteen?

Bottom line? While mangosteen powder has high levels of vitamin C (the antioxidant is beneficial for your skin and immunity), that doesn’t exactly make it stand out in a crowd. “Having high levels of vitamin C is actually the case for most fruits,” says Davis, who usually recommends citrus fruits like tangerines and oranges for similar benefits and nutritional value.

“Aside from a small amount of vitamin C that you can get through whole foods fairly easily, the nutritional labels read pretty much zero,” adds Slayton. “I would only recommend it if it were hard for you to get whole fruits otherwise, because you could probably get similar benefits from fruits that are easier to find and cheaper,” says Davis.

However, if you’re someone who doesn’t like fruit, or finds it hard to fit it into your diet on a daily basis, there’s no reason you shouldn’t add the powder to your daily smoothie or oatmeal, says Slayton. The powders also work really well for traveling, especially if you’re in a place where fresh produce is hard to find.

Where can you buy mangosteen?

While the whole fruit is nearly impossible to find in a U.S. supermarket, you can easily find mangosteen powders online. However, there aren’t any regulations from the USDA when it comes to powdered fruit, so be sure to check the ingredients so you know exactly what you’re getting. Valorization of mangosteen, “The Queen of Fruits,” and new advances in postharvest and in food and engineering applications: A review

One of the most prolific plants utilized in various applications is mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.). Rich in potent bioactive compounds, such as xanthones, mangosteen is known to possess pharmacologically important anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor properties. However, most previous reviews have only discussed the application of mangosteen in medicinal areas, yet more recent studies have diverged and valorized its usage in other scientific fields. In this review, the utilization of this exotic fruit in postharvest biology (phytohormone roles, metabolite profiling, bioactive compounds, isolation method optimization, chemical contaminant identification, and management of pests and fruit disorders), food science (food products, animal feed supplementation, and food shelf-life determination), and engineering fields (fabric and solar cell dyes, carbon dots, activated carbon, and biomedical advanced materials) is presented in detail. Research papers published from 2016 onward were selected and reviewed to show the recent research trends in these areas. In conclusion, mangosteen has been utilized for various purposes, ranging from usage in industrially important products to applications in advanced technologies and biomedical innovation.

Selection and Storage

Mangosteens can be available fresh during summer months. Completely matured, deep purple color fruits are either picked up by hand or using a hook-and-basket method as in mangoes, carefully handling without damaging them. Injury to the outer skin results in percolation of bitter-latex into the edible flesh turning the whole fruit bitter and inedible.

Mangosteen is now readily available in the supermarkets across the United States. While buying, look for fresh fruits that feel heavy in hand with firm green calyx at the stem end, and clean, bright purple outer surface since they signal new arrival from East Asian orchards. Avoid those appearing dry and blotched skins as they may indicate old stock.

At home, place ripe fruits in a cool well-ventilated place where they keep well for up to two weeks. For extended keeping-quality, store them in the refrigerator.

Preparation and Serving tips

Wash fruit in water to remove surface dust. Fresh fruit has a thick, soft rind, quite like in pomegranate but thicker in size. In general, the fruit is scored through the rind around an equatorial circumferential fashion using a paring knife, and its upper half pulled up gently using the thumb to unveil sweet, snow-white arils inside.

Prolonged exposure to hot conditions may cause its outer rind dry, brittle and may pose problems while peeling its rind.
