Mum’s amazing transformation from Buddha to beauty as she hula hooped herself thin

Posing for a photo beside a Buddha on a girls’ night out, Barbel Williamson felt as if she and the golden statue could be twins .

After years of comfort eating, compounded by losing her husband to cancer , Barbel tipped the scales at 20st and, because of the rolls of Buddha-like flab around her middle, she only just squeezed into a dress size 24.

Haribo sweets and family packs of crisps were always too hard for her to resist and she’d graze on junk food through the day and eat her way through one packet of biscuits after another at night.

She’d become so big she struggled to walk.

But fast forward two years and Barbel, 52, has shed 10 stone – half her weight – dropped eight dress sizes and now has a figure women half her age would envy – and it’s all down to hula hooping.

“It’s brilliant that I’ve found an exercise I love, and weekly hula-hooping classes have helped me slim down at the same time,” says Barbel.

“My mindset has changed completely and I feel so much fitter and healthier.

“Now I make all my meals from scratch with fresh ingredients. I go to a weighted hoop class every week and I have my own hoop at home.

“It’s addictive and whenever I get a few minutes spare I hoop, especially when I’m watching the telly.

“When I first went to a class I spent the whole time dropping the hoop and picking it up again.

“Now I’ve cracked it and can do it for 15 minutes without stopping. I’ve even learnt how to do squats while spinning.”

Barbel was a size 12 when she met and married her husband Michael aged 18, and being happy and content, she didn’t think about the calories she consumed.

Their evening meals consisted of fish fingers and chips and other processed food which Barbel could put in the oven.

When their two children, Janine, now 31, and Graham, 27, came along, Barbel finished off their leftovers too.

“I was a stay-at-home mum when the kids were little and I’d pick food off their plates when they’d eaten enough,” she says.

“I’d skip breakfast, and snack all day on biscuits, crisps and sweets right up until it was time to go to bed.

“The children were studious so I managed to avoid anything active and strenuous when they were young.”

By the time she was 30, Barbel weighed 15 stone and was a size 18/20.

Over the next couple of years, she managed to lose six stone through healthy eating, but she put the weight back on by her late 30s and went back up to 17st.

“I was a typical yo-yo dieter because as soon as I lost some weight it wasn’t long before I put it all back on again,” she says.

“In my early 40s, I lost another eight stone, and although I felt much better about myself, I didn’t have the willpower to keep it off. I didn’t do any exercise either.”

Barbel, an employment adviser, was 43 when Michael was diagnosed with stomach and liver cancer, and the stress took its toll.

She became her husband’s full-time carer until he passed away three months later at just 49.

“It was a very difficult time because Michael’s illness was very sudden,” she says.

“I did lose a bit of weight because I was so worried, but when he passed away, I used food to help ease my grief.

“I felt depressed and lost without him. Eating made me feel that bit better.

“I’d never prepared a healthy meal because I didn’t enjoy cooking, so I used to shove quick and easy ready-meals in the oven and snack on sweets.

“Haribo sweets were my downfall and I could eat one giant bag after another.

“The extra weight put a strain on my joints and I suffered with constant back pain.

“When I was at my heaviest, I suffered heart palpitations, and going on a short walk left me struggling for breath.

“And while friends bought new outfits for nights out, I had to wear the same clothes every time and they’d have to walk slowly just so I could keep up.”

Then, on her monthly girls’ night out in Newcastle, they passed the Buddha as they headed for the bus station and couldn’t resist the photo opportunity.

“But when I saw the photo of myself with it, I felt like everyone else looked lovely except me – I was like the ugly relative in my elasticated trousers and tunics,” she says.

“I once loved clothes shopping but I struggled to find anything to fit in high street shops so I had to order some baggy outfits online.”

With her 50th birthday approaching in November 2013, Barbel arranged a trip to London to celebrate with her children, but she had to stop to rest every few minutes.

“It was on the trip I realised that I needed to do something about my weight,” she says.

“I had no energy and I knew the kids were really worried about me. They could see I was seriously putting my health at risk.”

Barbel decided to take action.

“I tried going to a gym first but I couldn’t keep up with the walking pace on the treadmill,” she says.

“I was pouring with sweat after just a few minutes which was humiliating.

“A colleague at work was also wanting to get fit so we looked together online for something fun because I knew I would stick to it.”

In November 2014, she came across a hula-hooping class near her home in Morpeth, Northumberland, run by a company called Powerhoop.

Powerhooping is where the hoop is larger and heavier than a traditional hoop so it uses your muscles up to 70% more.

The class also combines a number of arm and leg exercises in addition to spinning the hoop around the trunk of the body – a 45-minute class burns approximately 640 calories.

“Although I’d owned a hula hoop as a child, I was never very good at it,” says Barbel.

“Powerhooping sounded like great fun, but because I was so overweight, I struggled to keep the hoop around my midriff and kept dropping it.

“It had been 10 years since I’d even seen my waist so balancing the hoop around my middle was tricky to get the hang of.

“But the instructor was really patient with me, and with only 10 people in the class, I didn’t feel intimidated.

“I refused to give up and soon I managed to hoop for a full minute without stopping.

“I could even choose how hard I wanted to push myself because the hoop has different weighted inserts which slot inside.

“It was a brilliant feeling and I was burning hundreds of calories while having fun at the same time. I was so glad I’d persevered.”

Barbel also signed up to Slimming World classes and swapped ready-meals and sweets for lean meat and vegetables.

She managed to lose a stone in the first four weeks.

She says: “After just a couple of months I noticed my tummy was looking more toned and I had bags more energy.

“My attitude towards food and exercise changed completely and I enjoyed the weekly classes so much that I bought my own hula hoop so I could work out at home. It was addictive.”

By January this year, Barbel was down to a size 8/10 and had lost half her weight, weighing 10st 2lb.

“As soon as I saw a difference in my figure it motivated me to keep going with the healthy eating and hula-hooping,” she says.

“After a couple of months of my new regime my clothes felt loose and I was developing an hourglass figure which felt really amazing.

“When I was big I’d been borderline diabetes but now I’m a healthy weight, it’s cleared up by itself.”

Barbel, who is single, says she now feels like a completely different person, adding: “I’m full of energy, feel healthy, and I
have a new attitude towards food and exercise.

“I’ve found a new lease of life and I’m finally the person I’ve always wanted to be.

“I eat healthily but I do let myself have the odd treat because I know I’ll be able to work it off with the hoop.

“It’s the little things that mean the most, like being able to walk straight into a shop and choose anything I like.

“The hula-hooping definitely keeps me young and I never miss a class. My only regret is not picking it up sooner.”

How Hula Hooping Helped Kick-Start This Woman’s 40-Pound Weight-Loss Journey

Kimberly Barrett Verrastro never thought of her weight as a problem until she hit her late teens. “Growing up, I was always the skinny girl,” Verrastro tells Shape. “But after graduating high school, that changed out of the blue and the weight started to creep on. I also wasn’t aware that the antidepressant and anti-anxiety meds I was taking caused weight gain, which contributed to the spike.”

When she went in for a routine checkup a few years later, her blood tests raised some red flags with her doctors. “I was just 24 years old and they told me I had high cholesterol, which was pretty concerning,” she said. “Without exploring other options, the doctors suggested that I go on cholesterol medication, but I wasn’t having any of that.” (Related: This App Compares Prescriptions for You with Advice from Real Doctors)

When she learned about her high cholesterol, Verrastro was already in the process of getting off her antidepressants and reluctant to add more meds into the equation. “I really didn’t feel like I needed to take cholesterol medication at my age, and my husband agreed,” she says. “He encouraged me to be aware of how I was feeling overall and take control over my health.” (Related: Why Even Healthy People Should Work With a Nutritionist)

So, Verrastro took matters into her own hands by booking an appointment with a nutritionist. “Food wasn’t really something I thought about too much,” she says. “My whole life, I kind of just ate whatever tasted good regardless of whether I was getting the nutrients I needed to be healthy. But after meeting with a nutritionist, I learned about portion control, and how the foods you put in your body really affect your health and your mood.”

Over the next couple of months, Verrastro started experimenting with foods that made her feel good and developed a love for cooking. “I found this website called Skinnytaste, which has so many healthy, delicious recipes, and it helped me appreciate fresh and healthy foods as being fuel for the body,” she says.

As she started on her wellness journey, Verrastro also started forcing herself to go the gym. “I’d go three to four times a week and I absolutely hated it,” she says. “I tried so many different workouts and classes, but nothing clicked.” Eventually, Verrastro realized that doing something she didn’t like wasn’t sustainable. (That’s exactly how this woman felt at first, too. Read more about why we’re obsessed with her “don’t know, don’t care” approach to the scale.)

That’s when one of her friends introduced her to a workout that completely changed her approach to fitness. “It was so random but one of my friends said I should try out this hula-hooping class, and I fell in love with it instantly,” says Verrastro. “It put me in a meditative state and provided a killer workout at the same time-working literally every single part of my body. The most important part though, was that it was fun and it made me realize that being active doesn’t have to be a chore. You just have to find something that motivates you.” (Related: This Woman Can Hula-Hoop with Literally Every Part of Her Body)

Before she knew it, her body started to change. “I had stopped weighing myself completely, but I could tell my clothes weren’t fitting me anymore, and that I was looking more trimmed and toned,” she says. (Related: Why I See a Therapist for My Fear of Stepping On the Scale)

Once Verrastro felt herself getting stronger, she says she became more open to trying workouts that used to make her feel discouraged and disheartened-like spinning, which she now does several times a week, in addition to hula-hooping whenever she can.

What motivated her most along the way, though, is the support of other people like her. She met them through her spin classes or through online motivation groups just like Shape’s #MyPersonalBest Goal Crusher’s Facebook page. (More Awesomeness: The 40-Day Crush Your Goal Challenge with Jen Widerstrom)

“I’m not a very active person on social media,” she says. “But that page provides such a nice community of like-minded people that I’m comfortable stepping up and talking about my journey. To see so many women sharing how they put their health first is such a huge motivation-not to mention the overall positivity and support goes a long way to brighten your day.”

Verrastro says that in the years since her high-cholesterol scare, she’s only stepped on the scale during doctor’s visits-until one day recently when she weighed herself for the first time in years. (Related: How I Started Using the Latest Health Tech to Finally Ditch the Scale)

“I started taking out my spring clothes and realized nothing fit and it made me curious about how much I weighed now,” she says. “I stepped on and found out I was over 40 pounds lighter than when I started my wellness journey four years ago.”

She also found out from her docs that her cholesterol was back to normal. “Being able to take back control of my health without weighing myself all the time and doing what I love was a huge deal for me. It felt like such a huge accomplishment.”

Now, Verrastro says she wants to inspire other women in her shoes to do the same. “No diet or workout fad is going to help you reach your goals long-term,” she says. “If you’re trying to take back control of your health, you have to find your ‘why.’ In my case, it was achieving a healthy lifestyle without the help of medications. Once you’ve found your ‘why,’ find motivation through things you love doing-that’s something you can actually stick with for the rest of your life.”

Courtesy, Kristin Benton & Ashley YorkAfter having her first child eight years ago, Kristin Benton weighed 223 pounds and wanted to lose some of that baby weight. Slaving away at the gym sounded boring and expensive, so she was anxious to figure out another option.

When one of Benton’s friends mentioned his wife had taken up hula hooping, the new mom was intrigued. A cheap hoop wouldn’t require a pricey gym membership or for her to spend her rare free time at a fitness center.

Benton started hula hooping for just half an hour each night while her husband watched TV. She figured it would be healthier than just sitting on the couch, but she didn’t expect the pounds to melt away. (Don’t miss the secrets of women who manage to get in a workout every day.) Within two weeks, Benton already noticed results, and she kept shedding about two to three more pounds every week. After about six months of nightly hula hoop sessions, she’d lost 40 pounds. “I thought, ‘This is an activity and a way to be active’ but didn’t go into it thinking I’d lose all my weight,” says Benton. “I didn’t know it would change my life.” (Want to change your life? Try these calorie-blasting workouts.)

Seeing what a difference one lifestyle tweak could make, she decided to make even more healthy changes. She started paying attention to what she ate and hitting the gym to tone up even more—but she never gave up her love for hula hoops. “Hooping has remained part of my active lifestyle and fitness routine,” she says. “It was a gateway exercise and opened the door to so much.”

When Benton got pregnant with her second daughter, she regained some of that weight. But this time, she had a plan. With the help of hooping, she shed those pounds, and has lost a grand total of 48 pounds since her first pregnancy. Whenever friends asked her secret to losing the post-baby weight, she was eager to share the answer: hula hooping.

Hoping to share her fun workout with other women, Benton started a hula hoop fitness class. After five years as owner of Happy Hoops in Nashville, she closed those doors to pair up with a business partner and create FXP Fitness. The company has classes in 42 states, plus a series of workout DVDs.

FXP Fitness uses hula hoops, but at two pounds and 41 inches in diameter, they’re not the wimpy little ones you’ll find at Toys “R” Us. And Benton has spread beyond the traditional hip-swinging movement too. She uses the bigger, heavier hoops a program that has elements of yoga, pilates, and barre. “You use the hoop for balance and support, and use it for resistance,” she says. “It strengthens muscles through resistance training and for stretches to create long, lean muscles.”

Her routine has changed form, but Benton still swears by hula hooping for keeping her in shape. “I’m mostly muscle at this point and feel really healthy and strong,” she says.

Padded, Weighted Fitness Hoops Were you looking for one of these? The most common hoops you see when looking for a “Hula Hoop for Exercise” or a “Weighted Hula Hoop” or “Fitness Hula Hoop” are these foam padded hoops straight from China. I can say with complete confidence that 99% of these hoops are in fact BAD for your spine and will cause you permanent damage. Perhaps you should read that sentence again….these foam padded hoops that weigh in excess of 2.5 pounds are BAD for you and can cause PERMANENT damage to your spine and overall health. Please keep reading so we can help you make the best decision for yourself, loved ones and long-term well being. The Weighted Hula Hoop Trend That Has Us Worried Using Excessively Heavy Hoops (More Than 3lbs)We need to understand WHY adults are using heavier and heavier hoops. Think about children you’ve seen hula hooping. When children hula hoop, most don’t need heavier hoops to keep the hoop spinning. With a little practice, they can naturally master waist hooping and make it look effortless. But as we age, a few things happen:We lose our mind-muscle connection. Our mind-muscle connection allows us to increase the number of muscle fibers used while performing an exercise. An increase in muscle fibers means we improve our ability to control, fire, and relax muscles on demand. We lose core strength and proper body mechanics. Most of us sit for a great portion of the day. Sitting makes the lower back take on a job it wasn’t designed to do, leading to lower back pain. We have tension in our necks and headaches from a forward staring down at computers or looking down at texts. We focus on the “six-pack” ab muscles, the rectus abdominus, and ignore the other core muscles. These core muscles are the group of muscles that stabilize and protect the spine, transfer force from one extremity to another and initiate movement. They even act as a natural corset. Yet most of us don’t know how to activate them beyond the superficial six-pack layer. We lose patience. We live in a world of instant gratification. Instant texts, TV, and movies on demand, answers at our fingertips. While this makes life easier in some areas, it hasn’t helped our patience or practice. The right weight and size are important when learning the basics of waist hooping, but so is practice. Practicing your technique will take your results from “I can hoop” to “Wow, that looks effortless”.These three factors have contributed to the popularity of weighted hula hoops for adults. A heavier hoop rotates more slowly around your body giving you time to master the technique necessary to keep your hoop spinning. When we have almost instant success with anything our brain lights up with a flood of dopamine, one of the neurochemicals that contribute to happiness and good mood. Read more about hooping mood connection here. The Misunderstanding of the Term “Weighted” The term “weighted” can be a bit confusing in terms of hula hoops. Weighted simply means that the hoop is heavier than your typical Dollar Store or Walmart hoop. It does NOT mean that the hoop should be heavy and weighted with water, sand, rice, weights, or anything else that makes is heavy. An adult weighted hoop is a hoop that uses a heavier based plastic such as Polyethyelene and is meant for adults instead of kids. These weighted hoops are typically about 1.3 pounds to 1.8 pounds in weight. The “Weighted Hoops” that are all wavvy, have ridges, bumps or padding are from Chinese companies and usually weigh anywhere from 2.2 pounds – 8 pounds. Which are VERY bad for you! Overly Heavy Hula Hoops Can Do More Harm Than Good Using a hoop that’s heavier than 3lbs can potentially do more harm than good. Foundation training expert Dr. Eric Goodman explains how our modern lifestyle affects us in his book “True to Form”. “The muscles constructed to keep her upright against gravity have weakened from lack of use; the joints taking the pressure the muscles should absorb have grown rigid. That’s backward from the way things should work, leaving Hallie with weak muscles and stiff joints.” – the exact opposite of what they should be.“As a result, Hallie’s chest droops downward under the force of gravity, taking her ribcage with it and pressing the ribcage into her pelvis, thereby shortening her torso and further bending the muscles of her lower back out of shape. Inside this drooping structure, everything gets squashed, flattened, jammed together in a body that is pressed forward, collapsed inward squeezed down, out of alignment, and off-balance” The problem, as Dr. Goodman explains, is that we are all Hallie. Most of us spend time sitting behind a computer, or in our cars for long commutes, bending over as we text, watching TV.So adding a hoop heavier than 3lbs…..or even a 2.2 pound hoop to a body that’s already collapsed downward, out of alignment, off-balance, and coupled with poor hooping mechanics is a recipe for disaster. As a trainer, I would never load weight on to a squat bar for a client that has poor body mechanics while squatting. That’s just asking for injury and does nothing to properly train muscle recruitment.Nor should we give a client an excessively heavy hoop, just because it feels like good exercise. We reached out to Dr. Keenan Borgardt, a Portland-based chiropractor, specializing in acute and chronic injury rehabilitation. Dr. Borgardt agreed that a heavy hoop provides the ability to create momentum to keep the hoop spinning (not a good thing), and thus does not recruit the stabilizing musculature. What Hula Hoop Weight Should I Use to Lose Weight? So if too heavy is no good, how heavy CAN you go? Or should you even use a weighted hula hoop? You absolutely can use a weighted hoop safely to lose weight, tone your abs, and narrow your waist, but to lose weight, your body needs to be in a fat-burning state. And the truth is, no amount of hooping with ANY weight of hoop will get the job done if your body’s fat storage switch is turned on.Whether your body is in fat storage or fat-burning mode is very much influenced by what you’re eating. To flip the switch to burn fat, we need to focus on whole foods. These include vegetables, healthy fats and proteins, fruit, and whole grains. An overabundance of processed food will keep your body in fat storage mode.Based on feedback from thousands of clients, we’ve found the optimal starting weight for most people is between 1.1 and 1.7 pounds. All of our fitness hoops are weighted in this range to give you the best possible chance of learning to waist hoop correctly and safely. This weight is ideal to practice regularly for longer time periods to gain both aerobic and core strength benefits. Go much heavier and you risk being able to use your hoop for shorter time periods (5 minutes or less) and with an increased risk of injury. Two in One Fitness Hula Hoop Our 2 in 1 Fitness Hula Hoop is our pick because it has a starting size of 1.7 lbs and with the push of a button has a removable connector that takes it down to a smaller 1.3 lb hoop. It is both a 42″ hoop and a 38″ hoop, which are both sizes that have found work GREAT for the beginner hooper. What Weight Should I Use to Work My Abs? Hooping is a little different than traditional strength training exercises. When you do traditional strength training, you or your trainer may measure success by how much weight you’ve been able to ADD. Maybe you used to be able to do a set of bicep curls with a 5lb weight and now you can use 10 lbs – that’s progress, right? When we look at hooping, we can get stuck in the “more is better mindset”.But your optimal weight is the minimum weight YOU NEED to keep your hoop spinning with proper body mechanics. As your technique improves, you can progress with a lighter hoop by controlling and activating your deep core muscles so precisely that you learn to keep a very light hoop spinning. And a lighter hoop means more contractions per minute because it’s going to rotate faster.Minimum weight needed to keep the hoop spinning WHILE your core muscles contract = maximum abdominal muscle activation. Which Works Your Core More, Side-to-Side Hooping or Front-Back Hooping? There’s a progression that happens (or SHOULD happen) when you learn to waist hoop. When you begin to waist hoop your movements tend to be a bit exaggerated to keep the hoop spinning. Side-to-side pushing and bigger front-back movement keep the hoop up in the beginning. This is absolutely OK and expected because at this stage we are learning basic mechanics and are just trying to have success with the hoop. Success lights up feel-good neurochemicals like dopamine in the brain that make us feel good. This is key to enjoying hooping and that makes you pick your hoop up again the next day. After you gain control of basic waist hooping in your normal current (the direction your hoop spins), try waist hooping in the opposite current to work muscles equally and prevent imbalances. Then you want to start tweaking those side-to-side and front-back movements so they become smaller. As you do this, your inner core muscles begin taking over and opposed to hip movement and momentum to keep your hoop spinning. Both front-back and side-to-side motions are important to try. Our core is designed to work through a variety of plans (front to back, side to side, keeping the spine stable underweighted loads, stabilization during twisting, etc). Most people will find one way that’s most comfortable and stay there without experimenting. But to maximize your results, work both. Reengage Your Core With This Activation Exercise Did you know that hula hoop workouts are a fantastic way to lose belly fat? Because hula hooping increases the feel-good neurochemicals in your brain and decreases your stress hormone cortisol (this hormone plays a role in women’s belly fat), it is particularly effective in a weight loss strategy. If you are battling chronic daily stress (job, financial, marriage, move, etc) and/or are post-menopausal, then you might just be familiar with cortisol’s effect on your body. Cortisol is a hormone that when chronically elevated, can disrupt normal functioning. It can reduce sleep quality, duration, create more stress, cause overeating, and increased fat deposits around the middle in post-menopausal women. In this lesson, we’re teaching you how to reactivate your transverse abdominis through breathing and apply this new technique while hooping, regardless of what front-back or side-to-side stance. When we breathe vertically, the vegas nerve puts our body into a fight or flight mode, regardless of what’s going on around us. So if we’re hooping to bring down cortisol levels and reduce stress and fight belly fat, unless we address our breathing, we’re not sending the right signals to our body. Cori M. Weight Loss Before and After

I’m honored to be sharing another incredibly inspiring Weight Loss Success Story with you today.

By replacing “exercise” with “play” Cori Magnotta, a mom with acute hypothyroidism, was able to haul hoop away 85 pounds!

I dare you not to smile as you read Cory’s story…

More Of The Best Weight Loss Success Stories from 2016!

Tell Us A Little Bit About Your Weight Struggle
I hula hooped away 85 pounds!

I never found fitness fun. I would join a gym, go once, and never go back. When I was pregnant with my son in May of 2014, I developed severe preeclampsia (high blood pressure) and was put on bed rest for the last 2 months of my pregnancy. Being sedentary contributed to my weight gain during my pregnancy tremendously.

Weeks after I had my son, although I was eating less and taking him for long walks in the stroller, I wasn’t able to lose any of the pregnancy weight. The scale was stuck at 250 pounds. I went to my doctor who at first attributed it to “not sleeping” and “the stress of being a new mom.”

Despite being positive that I “just needed to try harder,” she agreed to run a full thyroid panel of blood tests on me just to be sure. The results came back showing that I had acute hypothyroidism, a thyroid disorder that slows down the entire metabolic process, making it much more difficult to lose weight as a result.

Cori Magnotta Before Weight Loss

Having a diagnosis motivated me to not become a statistic. I had overweight parents my entire life and I became determined that my son was going to have a healthy mom! I began to search the internet for fun workout ideas, as I knew I loathed the treadmill (affiliate link) and gyms.

I came across FXP Hoop Fitness, which uses a weighted Hula-Hoop and incorporates Barre, Yoga, and Pilates in fun, innovative, dance-like routines. I had always been able to hula hoop from a very young age, I won every hula hoop competition as a child and even used it as my talent to win the Miss Connecticut Teen title in 1996. I was immediately hooked on hooping as my new fitness strategy!

Since no classes were offered in my area, I purchased the 2 pound FXP Hoop online and started hooping at least 10 minutes a day while watching TV and worked my way up to an hour at a time. Studies show that hula hooping for just one hour can burn between 600-800 calories!

It is absolutely impossible to not smile while hula hooping! As I began to lose weight, people started asking what I was doing and I wanted to share this fun way to get fit with them! Never in my wildest dreams did I think I could ever be a group fitness instructor, but that’s exactly what I did; I signed up for and passed the certification program to become an FXP Hoop Fitness Instructor!

After falling in love with hoop fitness and losing 85 pounds, I decided to enter the America’s Fit Miss pageant and was awarded the title of America’s Fit Mrs. 2016. I use my title as a megaphone to raise awareness and advocate for hypothyroidism and thyroid disorders.

My son just turned 2 years old and I am proud to be healthy enough and have the energy to play with him all day long! He even hula hoops with me using his toddler sized hula hoop!

What Was Your Wake-Up Call Or “A-Ha Moment” That Caused You To Really Commit Yourself To Succeeding?
My parents were morbidly obese and were never able to do any physical activity with me growing up. Finding out I had Hypothyroidism made me realize that I needed to make changes now, or I was going to repeat the same health mistakes my parents made.

Cori Magnotta Before Weight Loss

How Have Your Eating Habits Changed Since Beginning Your Journey? What Did You Eat Before And What Are You Eating Now?
Once you start exercising, there’s a snowball effect: You have more energy to do more things. I started eating a little bit better, because I now had the energy to cook instead of going to the drive-thru.

I started educating myself about what I was putting in my body, I read labels and learned how my food was prepared like never before. I record all of my food in the ‘Lose It’ app on my phone.

Awareness and being mindful about what I’m eating has been the biggest change. Before, I’d go to the drive thru several times a week. Now, I’m learning how to cook and prepare healthy foods such as grilled chicken and tasty ways to prepare vegetables so even my toddler will eat them!

What Is The Difference In Your Fitness Before You Started And Now?
I wear a fit band that I use to challenge myself to be as active as possible. My son is very active and requires constant supervision. My go to trick for fitting in my work out every day is to take him to a fully fenced-in toddler park and hoop for about 20 minutes while he explores contently.

Then, I’ll chase him around the playground challenging myself to see how many steps and flights of stairs I can get in while running around the playground after him! I do pull-ups on the monkey bars, run up and down the ladder and use the toad steps as if they were quad steps on an obstacle course!

The key for me is to always have fun with fitness; there is nothing more fun than using childhood activities like hula hooping and the playground to stay active and fit! I never thought I could ever become a fitness instructor, yet I teach Hoop Fitness twice a week to a sold out class!

Cori Magnotta – America’s Fit Mrs with Hoop

What Has Been The Biggest Change/Payoff For You So Far?
Being a Certified Hoop Fitness Instructor, I have the opportunity to show others that fitness can be fun! I helped a new mom lose over 50 pounds just by hula hooping! It really is a full-body workout! Personally, I’m able to chase and play with my toddler all day. Know that he’s going to grow up with an active and healthy mom is the best payoff in the world!

How Much Weight Have You Lost? How Long Did It Take You To Lose It?
I have lost a total of 100 pounds! I gave birth May 31st 2014 and weighed 265 pounds that day. As of August 2015, I have maintained a weight of 165 pounds, so about 15 months to lose it and I have more importantly maintained this weight for over a year. It is important to note that I am 6′ tall and 165 is a healthy weight for me.

Advice and/or Words of Wisdom to Others Who Are Struggling?
Never let anyone tell you that your ‘too big’ to do anything. I was terrified that I was ‘too big’ to be a fitness instructor and then I thought I was ‘too big’ to compete in a fitness pageant. If you can dream it, you can do it! Don’t wait, go for it now!

Hula Hoop Workouts for Fitness and Weight Loss – Do They Work?

Hula hoop workouts for fitness and weight loss? Are you kidding! Yes please.

Written by Bunny HoopStar, September 2017
Who wants to go a gym?! Not me, that’s for sure.

Hooping workouts, particularly with weighted hula hoops, are all the rage in the fun fit world. There’s a reason for that – they’re FUN!

But does hooping really work as a fitness tool and will it help you lose weight?

After 23 years of hooping, and 12 years of teaching people how to hoop, I’ve been studying the benefits of hula hooping extensively in my classes, my personal practice and my hoop community. I’ve also read numerous articles online and found two important scientific studies.

Don’t be fooled, successful hooping, fitness and weight loss can all escape you without the facts and a well formed strategy. You want to spin through the hype so you can develop your own personalised exercise routine that works for you.

Below I share the top 10 questions I get asked about hooping.

1. What is the right size hula hoop?

Because I get asked this question all the time, I’ve created The Ultimate Guide on How to Choose a Hula Hoop.

Pro-tip: bigger is better for newbies and plus-sized hoopers! Weighted fitness hula hoops, weighted dance hoops or even weighted polypro hoops are all great options. Read more here

2. Can Hula Hooping help you lose belly fat?

Yes! This recent study from the USA supports what most hoopers know and love – hooping reduces body fat around the abdomen and hips. Your hula hoop workout results will depend on your fitness level, your body size and your endurance. Build your hoop practice slowly to develop a sustainable workout. How long should you hoop for to lose weight? See below.

3. Can a hula hoop trim your waist?

You betcha! Read on.

4. How long should you hula hoop to lose weight?

Start by hooping for 5 minute intervals then increase your workout in 5 minute increments until you are hooping for 20-30 minutes. According to this study by the American Council on Exercise, 30 minutes of hooping will burn approximately 210 calories.

“Hooping compares pretty favorably with most other group classes, in terms of heart rate and calorie burn” … In fact, exercisers can expect similar results from hooping as they’d get from boot-camp classes, step aerobics and cardio kickboxing—all of which meet fitness industry criteria for improving cardiovascular fitness. Also, by burning approximately 210 calories per 30-minute session, hooping falls within accepted guidelines for exercise that can contribute to weight management.

The best way to stay engaged in your hoop practice is to rock out to your favourite music. Make a playlist and hoop those calories off!
IMPORTANT – hooping, as a single step solution, will not “make” you lose weight. There are many essential factors to consider in approaching weight loss. My own experience with weight loss and hooping has included dietary adjustments and a complementary exercise routine developed through regular physiotherapy and gentle yoga.

ESSENTIAL – consult your doctor if you have any questions or concerns specific to your individual condition.

5. Is a hula hoop good for abs?

You know, you’d really think so – how could hooping not be good for the abs? While hooping does indeed trim your waist, reduce body fat, increase your heart rate, boost your stamina, improve your body’s alignment and make you feel amazing, according to this recent study – hooping showed “no improvements in torso muscular endurance as measured by isometric testing” (plank tests). Dang it!

What about that six pack and all the core strength you’ve been hooping for?

To target your abs, or core strength in all movement modalities, you need to consider alignment, foundational support and correct movement. The key to a strong core includes exercises such as curl ups, crunches, leg lifts, bicycle legs and, you guessed it – planks! With a strong, stable core your hooping will become easier and safer for you to enjoy. Don’t forget to breathe!

You need to “include core conditioning into your dance training to improve body placement and reduce risk of injury.”
Jacqui Haas, Dance Anatomy

So while spinning a hula hoop may not necessarily give you abs of steel, it will help you align your body for the core stability, endurance and focus that you need to build core strength and develop a full body workout through hoop dance.
The American Council on Exercise recognises hooping as a total-body workout:

Given the variety of movements in hooping it should be considered a total-body workout that has the potential to improve your flexibility and balance while strengthening and toning the muscles of the back, abdomen, arms and legs. The rhythmic nature of hooping may also be relaxing and almost meditative for some.

Physiotherapy, yoga and pilates are all great options as foundational core training complements to your hooping. With these additional exercise routines, not only will you set yourself up for a sustainable hula hoop practice – with killer abs – but you will also add to your toolkit of skills for a longer lasting life.

6. Can I use same weighted hoop for legs/arms etc?

Interesting question – technically, yes. Ideally, no. Over the 10+ years of developing my hula hoop product range and teaching adults and kids how to hoop, I’ve noticed what works best and what doesn’t. While a single hula hoop may feel like The One, as with any exercise routine, different props are required for different exercises. Weighted hula hoops can feel uncomfortable on sensitive and bony parts of the body such as the hands, arms and legs – if you wish to avoid bruising and discomfort in these areas, dedicate your weighted hoop to your waist hooping. Add a lightweight hula hoop to your collection – what we call featherlight polypro – and feel the sweet relief of options!

7. What parts of the body does hula hooping work?

This really depends on how you hoop. If you stand still with the hoop spinning around your waist, without activating and relaxing the rest of your body, you are working the waist in isolation without support or ease. Be careful of hooping in this way – by not activating foundational support, or easing into your workout with your breath, you risk straining your body in many different places.
By engaging your legs, core muscles and the base of your spine while breathing fully – all of which I highly recommend for safe hooping – you have instantly given yourself a foundation to move freely and safely with your hula hoop. Relax your neck and shoulders while extending through the arms, engage the biceps and triceps and watch your guns grow! When you start to hoop dance in an engaged and supportive way, hooping becomes a full body workout.

Follow these cues to support your body:

  • Connect to the floor evenly with your feet and don’t let them rock.
  • Feel the alignment from your feet up through your legs to the base of your spine and all the way up to the top of your head.
  • Find your neutral spine – not arched, or tucked – lift, lengthen and relax.
  • Feel your legs engage by pressing into the floor with your toes.
  • Relax the belly and let it breathe.
  • Feel the connection of the base of your spine to your pelvis.
  • Relax your shoulders and neck.
  • Allow your trunk to be relaxed with the support of your legs, feet and aligned posture.
  • Keep your body tall and straight as you hoop – don’t bend your body – and breathe!

8. The best exercises for weighted hula hoops + exercises to avoid.

A weighted fitness hoop is an ideal hoop to use on the waist and on the hips. These hoops are the perfect starter hoop, especially if you are carrying extra weight. Hooping on the waist and the hips are two great areas to focus on when you first start out.

I would avoid using weighted hula hoops on your arms and in your hands – they’re heavy!

Once you have successfully mastered hooping on your waist and hips, move on to a weighted dance hoop or a weighted polypro hoop to try fun beginner hula hoop tricks in the hands and on the arms. Quite a bit lighter although still weighted, so perfect for slowing the hoop down to learn beginner tricks yet still heavy enough for you to want to move forward with ease and a lighter hoop!

I recommend adding a lightweight polypro hoop to your collection so you can learn hand and arm hooping without getting unnecessary bruises or feeling the discomfort of a weighted hoop on your hands and arms.

9. What’s your single best piece of advice for hoopers to prevent injury or pain?

Add a core conditioning program to your hooping practice such as yoga or pilates. Sometimes, improving your body’s health and longevity is as simple (and complex) as understanding and correcting your posture. Consult a physiotherapist if you have any concerns about the postural condition of your body.

After recently rehabilitating from a severe accident and having my hoop practice wiped out, I enlisted the expert support of my doctor, a physiotherapist, a pilates teacher and several yoga teachers to get me back into my hoop. I am relieved to report that my recovery has been very slow and very steady. Almost there after 4 years of rehabilitation! It’s been a long road.

Please consult your medical practitioners before hooping if you are carrying extra weight or have any previous injury or pain.

Weighted hula hoop reviews

If you want to become the best hula hooper in the world and slim your waist, do not waste your time and buy the equipment at once! Read the customers’ weighted hula hoop results to make sure it is worth buying. You will find answers on the following burning questions:

  • Are weighted hula circles effective?
  • How to use the equipment to lose weight?
  • Does a hula circle slim your waist?
  • Why do weighted hula rings have ridges?

I heard about this sports equipment quite recently. My wife and I went to the sports goods store and she liked hula hoop. She said this is an amazing fitness tool that helps to keep fit and burn extra calories. I decided to please her and buy this hoop. In a month of training, her wais became slimmer. So I do not doubt in the effectiveness of this ring and highly recommend buying.

I presented the hula ring to my mother. She got rid of the extra centimeters for a couple of months. The figure became more graceful, the waist looks much slimmer. She was very happy to get such a useful gift. Now my mother uses it twice a year to maintain the body in perfect shape. She also likes resistance bands for burning calories and losing weight. Personally, I also try sometimes fitness activities with this equipment.

First of all, I should say that it is hard to turn the hoop at first. Especially for beginners or those who have not been engaged in sports for a long time. They probably will have many bruises, the body will hurt. I twist the hula hoop daily for 20-30 minutes. Sometimes 2 times a day, if there is enough time. For 2.5 months, the waist has become slimmer in volume by 4 cm.

What was my result? The abdominal muscles and press noticeably became slimmer and more elastic. And personally, I felt changes in 2 weeks of exercices. While using the fitness equipment, your mood improves, I feel only positive emotions. I will continue doing workouts with circle further, and recommend it to you! Fitness is not for me. There is no time and opportunity to go to the gym or exercise at home. But this amazing fitness tool – the most suitable option, the load and pleasure!

I have read that this fitness tool burns 15 calories per minute. Perhaps, but I also know that exercises should be regular. And most importantly, the hoop should be twisted as long as possible without interruptions and stops. Only in this case the best effect will be achieved. Begin to twist and watch the clock. Twist without stopping, and after 10 minutes you will feel the tension in the body, which will not happen if you constantly make pauses.

Those who want to constantly keep fit, definitely need this equipment. It helps to not eat in the evenings, burns extra calories and forms the waist. It is very convenient to watch TV and study. I would say that this simulator is for the lazy. Do not start with a long workout, in order to avoid bruising, 5 minutes is enough. Now I exercise for an hour, combining it with other exercises. The result is visible in the mirror, it makes me happy and gives a motivation.

Results before and after

Here are the results of real people who used a weighted hula hoop. Of course, visible waist transformation cannot be achieved by only workouts with a circle. The strict and well-balanced diet must be followed. Besides, hula hoop exercise should be combined with other kinds of workout such as aerobic, anaerobic and strength training.

FAQ

Body fat does not burn locally. Weight loss is gradual, so a complex approach based on a combination of intense exercise, aerobic exercise and a low carbohydrate diet is necessary to achieve quick results.

The question of how long to exercise with the hoop is individual. Generally speaking, 15 minutes a day is the optimal figure. Gradually, you can make the workout longer and alternate the rate of rotation.

Heavy hoop (metal or with weights inside) is suitable for a trained, athletic body, otherwise, bruises on the abs, hips and sides may occur. Light hoop (plastic, massage, lightweight metal) is suitable for beginners. It not only burns calories but also trains the cardiovascular system.

The research proved that with the help of this fitness device, people burned 210 calories in a 30-minute workout or 7 calories per minute.

Summing up all the positive reviews, we present the main benefits of the hula hoop. According to customers’ feedback, this fitness equipment is suitable for people with a quite different level of training. From beginners to pro users. Most of them, admit such advantages of using the magic circles:

  • Coordination and balance. Exercises with a hoop improve the movement coordination of the hips and abdomen muscles. Significantly develop the vestibular apparatus. And allow for better control of movement.
