The men in this study first ran on treadmills wearing no compression and then a second time while sporting compression sleeves on their lower legs. Researchers measured their oxygen uptake, stride, body positioning, and other markers throughout both runs. They noted no difference in exercise efficiency or biomechanics between the compression and no-compression runs. “Running economy, which is a measure of efficiency that is closely tied to endurance performance, was exactly the same with and without compression garments,” says Abigail Stickford, a researcher at the Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine in Dallas. “Running gait, which includes stride length and stride frequency, was also unchanged.”
This lack of effectiveness flies in the face of the claims often made about compression clothing, by both their manufacturers and users. For example, Stickford says, the garments used in her study supposedly increase blood circulation — and, thus, oxygen delivery — for improved sports performance and recovery, while also regulating skin temperature. Other supposed benefits include increased blood return to the heart, improved clearance of metabolic byproducts of exercise, increased proprioception (which means a person’s perception of his body positioning), and enhanced comfort. But when these purported perks have been put to the test in actual scientific studies — not counting the trials conducted by clothing manufacturers — Stickford says the results have been mixed, and have primarily shown no real performance benefits of compression.
This is not to say that compression doesn’t help muscles recover post-workout, which is another reason why athletes wear these items. But that would happen when the garments are worn after a workout, not during, says Stickford. “As far as I am aware, the scientific evidence supporting a positive effect of compression garments on recovery is more convincing than on any performance-enhancing effect,” she says. “It’s possible that this is a placebo effect, though, given that reduced soreness is probably the most consistently reported finding.”
Stickford says that a placebo effect may also have played a role in her study. The vast majority of participants did not usually wear compression sleeves outside of this trial, but there were a few who did. Those guys, she says, believed very strongly in compression’s effectiveness on training, performance, and recovery. And while the group as a whole did not see performance gains when they ran in compression sleeves, those individuals did show slight improvements in running economy.
So, should you wear them? “Based upon the results of this study, I think lower-leg compression sleeves are unlikely to improve endurance running performance,” Stickford says. “However, if you think they could improve your performance, it may be worth a shot. The placebo effect is a very real phenomenon that affects everything from exercise performance to health outcomes. If there is a ‘comfort,’ whether physiological or psychological, for an individual wearing compression garments, then it could certainly affect his performance.”
Stickford also points out that compression clothing might be more effective when worn for other sports, such as basketball or tennis, than for running. “There is some evidence to suggest that jumping and power performance can be maintained over a longer period of time when wearing compression shorts,” she says.
And while there may not be a drastic benefit of compression clothing, there’s really no harm in it either. “Unless you’re wearing something that’s cutting off your circulation,” Stickford says. “But most garments have a mild to moderate level of compression and shouldn’t do anything like that. Both anecdotal and experimental results show no significant harm in wearing the garments.” The most significant damage of compression clothing would be to your wallet.

Soon after I started really getting into running and training for half-marathons, I learned about compression clothing. I knew that stockings and socks made of the extra-tight material were used in medical settings to treat fluid buildup and swelling. But after seeing a handful of fitness brands launch compression wear that promised to improve performance and recovery by simply wearing stylish tights that just so happened to be a little snugger than normal, I was intrigued. My legs hurt, and anything that could help was worth trying, right?
But I was also skeptical, because it’s my job to question things as a health and fitness editor. Flash forward a couple years later, and I am now the proud owner of multiple pairs of compression pants and socks. (Full disclosure: Most of them have been gifted to me by the brands so I could try them out.) I wear them mostly after long runs when I’m training for races, especially in the winter when the change from outdoor cold to indoor heat makes my knees feel like they’re blowing up like balloons. But recently I’ve started to wonder: Are these fancy pants really doing anything? And even better: Do I, or any of SELF’s readers, need to be spending hard-earned cash on said fancy pants?
Compression clothing has been used for years to increase blood flow and reduce swelling.
That buildup and impending swelling I mentioned earlier is a condition called edema, and can be a side effect of everything from pregnancy to cancer treatment. People with this complication are often instructed by their doctors to wear compression stockings. Traditional compression garments—like stockings, socks, and sleeves—work by putting pressure on your limbs to prevent fluid (blood) from collecting in the tissue, according to the Mayo Clinic. They’re usually graduated, meaning they’re tightest at the ankle or wrist, and the level of compression gradually decreases as you move toward your torso. They work by essentially guiding blood toward the heart and increasing the speed and volume at which it flows.
When it comes to fitness, compression apparel is meant to help improve performance and recovery through similar methods.
“In athletics, the idea behind compression wear is to improve blood flow or oxygen delivery to muscles,” James Borchers, M.D., director of the division of sports medicine at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, tells SELF. The logic follows that improving these things will reduce the incidence of cramps, improve performance, and maximize recovery (by reducing muscle soreness, strength loss, and loss of range of motion after exercise). The problem is, the studies are minimal and there’s no real verdict on if they work the way they promise.
“Any study that has been done has involved really small numbers of people, like 10 individuals,” Reed Ferber, Ph.D., researcher at the University of Calgary and director of the Running Injury Clinic, tells SELF. “And then whatever findings one study comes out with, the next study shows the opposite.” This makes it hard to draw conclusions for a larger population of athletes.
Based on the available research, and good ol’ human testimony, experts say that compression wear seems to have recovery benefits, but special pants won’t make you a better athlete. “Most studies show that it’s not going to help with running performance. It’s not going to improve your time in a half-marathon, trail run, 5k, or even a sprint,” Ferber says. “The only real benefits that are shown is time of recovery is slightly improved.”
The reason why compression material works might actually be more psychological than physiological.
“The exact mechanism by which compression garments improve recovery is unclear at this time,” Nicholas M. Licameli, P.T., D.P.T., at Professional Physical Therapy, tells SELF. Since the physiological benefits are hard to prove, experts think that perhaps the bulk of the benefits are simply psychological.

In recent years, many people who exercise have begun wearing compression clothes. These snug-fitting socks, shorts, tights or shirts, which squeeze muscles as tightly as sausage casings, are reputed to improve performance during exercise and speed recovery afterward.
But a new study and several reviews of relevant research raise interesting questions about whether the garments really function as expected and help people to exercise better and, if they do, whether it is the clothing or people’s expectations doing most of the work.
The rationales for wearing compression clothing are logical enough. “The garments supposedly increase blood circulation and thus oxygen delivery for improved sport performance,” said Abigail Stickford, a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, who led the new study of compression clothes.
The clothes also are thought to refine proprioception, which is someone’s sense of how the body is positioned in space. Better proprioception should, in theory at least, improve the efficiency of movement and reduce the number of muscles that need to be activated, making exercise less tiring.
Meanwhile, the clothes also are believed to reduce fatigue and soreness after exercise by literally squeezing the muscles with a kind of no-hands massage and, by increasing blood flow to muscles, help to flush out unwanted exercise-related biochemicals.
The evidence to support such benefits has been largely anecdotal, however.
So for the new study, which was published this month in The International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance, Dr. Stickford, then a doctoral student at Indiana University in Bloomington, decided to perform a simple test of compression gear.
She rounded up 16 competitive male distance runners, some of whom regularly wore and swore by compression clothes, although most had not worn the clothing before. She equipped the runners with monitors and masks that would measure their gait, oxygen intake and other variables, and had them run on a treadmill at three, increasingly swift speeds.
Then she had the men slip on calf compression sleeves.
The men repeated the treadmill tests.
Had the compression sleeves functioned as expected, the men should have used less oxygen and been more biomechanically efficient when wearing the sleeves, Dr. Stickford said.
But as a group, they were not. She found no statistically significant differences in their running efficiency or biomechanics when they wore the sleeves and when they did not.
“Based upon the results of this study, lower-leg compression sleeves are unlikely to improve endurance running performance,” Dr. Stickford said.
Other studies of compression clothing have produced similar results. A particularly interesting 2013 study, for instance, showed that compression shorts do not increase blood flow to leg muscles after exercise, although enhanced blood flow is supposed to be one of the primary means by which the clothes speed recovery. Instead, the scientists found, exercise itself greatly increased postexercise blood flow to muscles, but compression shorts did not further augment that flow and in fact reduced the amount of blood reaching the deepest leg muscles.
Still other studies, however, have been more positive about compression. A review of more than 30 studies of the effects of compression clothing in sports performance and recovery, for instance, determined that “compression clothing may assist athletic performance and recovery in given situations.” Those situations involve sports such as basketball or track and field that require explosive sprinting and leaping, although athletes in other sports, including weight training, have reported feeling less sore if they wear compression clothes than if they don’t, the review found.
How the clothes work, though, remains mostly baffling — and may owe something to input from the mind. “We can’t blind people” in exercise studies about whether they are wearing compression garments or not, said Billy Sperlich, a professor of exercise science at the University of Würzburg in Germany, who led the study of blood flow and also was a co-author of the recent review.
So people’s expectations of what the clothes will accomplish may color their results.
Which does not mean that any resulting benefits are not real, Dr. Sperlich said. “Since beliefs are strong performance enhancers, I would recommend compression clothing to persons who believe in the performance-enhancing effect,” he said.
There are caveats, though, for anyone who is considering wriggling into compression garments, he said. The clothes do need to fit correctly, he said, which means tightly. Many people find that they dislike the feeling of being squished.
“In our studies, about 50 percent of the subjects like compression, 30 percent are indifferent and 20 percent don’t like the compression at all,” Dr. Sperlich said.
The clothes also need to be worn for several hours after strenuous exercise sessions, he said, if they are to improve recovery, raising delicate issues about odors.
The good news is that no study to date has found any negative physiological effects from wearing compression clothing, Dr. Stickford said. So if you do decide to experiment, “there is not much to lose besides $40 or so.”
