SeroVital-hgh Fails to Reverse Aging as Promised, Class Action Claims

A class action lawsuit filed by a California man says amino acid supplement SeroVital-hgh fails to deliver the anti-aging effects promised by its manufacturers.

Plaintiff Paul Martin says defendant Sanmedica International LLC falsely advertises its SeroVital-hgh product as a way to reverse the human body’s natural aging process by vastly increasing its production of human growth hormone, or HGH.

In fact, Martin claims the product does not increase HGH levels – and even if it did, he says, there is no scientific evidence to back up the claim that HGH provides anti-aging benefits.

According to Martin’s SeroVital-hgh class action lawsuit, Sanmedica advertises that its supplement causes a “682% mean increase in HGH levels.” But in fact, the product is incapable of increasing HGH levels, Martin says.

Martin runs down the ingredient list for SeroVital-hgh, explaining how none of the listed ingredients can increase HGH.

He says the amounts of lysine and arginine in the product aren’t enough to increase HGH. Studies show that it would take twice the amount of arginine in SeroVital-hgh to increase HGH, he says.

Likewise, the product’s glutamine content is inadequate to raise HGH by a factor of thousands, he claims.

Martin says oxy-proline can cause oxidation that actually aggravates the aging process, he claims. He says there is no evidence the last two ingredients, N-acetyl L-cysteine and schizonepta, have any effect on HGH levels.

The company further represents that elevated HGH levels will provide a slew of appealing anti-aging effects – representations that Martin says are also fraudulent.

Martin quotes promotional materials for SeroVital-hgh that promise “wrinkle reduction, decreased body fat, increased lean muscle mass, stronger bones, improved mood, heightened sex drive, and making users look and feel decades – not years, but DECADES – younger.”

According to Martin, only one clinical study has ever found an association between elevated HGH levels and possible anti-aging benefits. That study has since been debunked, he says. And in any case, the results from that study followed from injections of HGH administered over a period of six months.

He quotes subsequent studies that found no improvement in function following increases in HGH levels. One study found that HGH led to “distinctly unpleasant, if not harmful, side effects” like joint pain, stiffness in the hands and swelling in the lower extremities.

Martin says he bought SeroVital-hgh from a GNC store in Studio City, Calif. sometime within the last four years. He says he took the supplement as instructed, taking four capsules every 24 hours – but he never experienced any of the advertised benefits, he claims.

The SeroVital-hgh class action lawsuit raises claims for false advertising, violation of the California Consumer Legal Remedies Act, and breach of express warranty.

If certified as proposed, Martin’s plaintiff Class will include all persons in the U.S. who between Oct. 19, 2012 and the present purchased SeroVital-hgh for their own personal use. He also proposes to represent a subclass of Class Members who reside in California.

He seeks a court order stopping Sanmedica from the allegedly unlawful acts complained of. He also seeks an award of damages, restitution, court costs and attorneys’ fees, all with interest.

Martin is represented by attorneys Shireen M. Clarkson and Ryan J. Clarkson of Clarkson Law Firm PC.

The SeroVital-hgh Anti-Aging False Advertising Class Action Lawsuit is Martin v. Sanmedica International LLC, Case No. 2:16-cv-07794, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

UPDATE: The SeroVital-hgh class action lawsuit was dismissed on July 17, 2017.

SeroVital Hair Regeneres, The First (and Only) Drug-Free System That Reverses Graying and Regrows Younger, Fuller Hair+, Launches in Time for National Hair Loss Awareness Month

“We managed to secure exclusive rights to the Chromaviv™ compound,” said Dr. Amy Heaton. “As such, SeroVital Hair Regeneres is completely unique, because it addresses ALL the major issues related to aging hair: graying, hair loss, thinning, breakage, dullness, and reduced volume and fullness. This product works naturally with your body, so you grow hair that is structurally ‘younger.’ This drug-free, melanin-rich supplement is delivered directly to active hair follicles to reverse graying. When combined with the topical serum, this two-part, inside-out and outside-in approach offers the most potent therapeutic synergy to combat aging hair at the root.”

Two-thirds of Americans experience hair loss by the age of 35, and as many as 40% of post-menopausal women struggle with thinning hair. National Hair Loss Awareness Month was created to help promote solutions for both preventing and effectively treating hair loss. Aging is one of the most common causes of hair loss, and according to the American Hair Loss Society, Americans spend upwards of a billion dollars per year on hair loss treatments and hair loss prevention products. Unfortunately, however, most of these options don’t specifically target age-related hair loss. That’s what makes the compound Chromaviv™ in SeroVital Hair Regeneres so compelling.

In a clinical trial conducted on the key compounds in SeroVital Hair Regeneres’ Hair Renewal Softgels, subjects not only experienced significantly less gray hair, but also saw the regrowth of younger, fuller hair. In fact, 87% of subjects agreed their hair was less gray. In a 90-day randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, subjects saw significant improvements in age-related hair loss, hair tensile strength, hair appearance, reduced hair fall, increased growth of existing hair, and reduced breakage.

About: SeroVital-hgh quickly became America’s #1 hGH-boosting beauty supplement. The company has now expanded to include a line of powerful anti-aging solutions, including its latest breakthrough, Hair Regeneres. Manufactured and distributed for SanMedica International, LLC in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Dr. Mehmet Oz, 52, recently revealed on his show a breakthrough in the fight against aging — SeroVital-hgh, an amino acid containing human growth hormone that, he claims, has the potential to make people look and feel 20 years younger.

Dr. Oz, labeled “America’s Physician” by Oprah Winfrey, referenced a recent study revealed at a meeting for the Obesity Society in San Antonio, Tex. According to the study, results showed that the amino acid was capable of increasing bioactive serum (blood) growth hormone levels by a mean close to 700% in men and women at both ends of the age spectrum.

“Although he doesn’t endorse any product, his sheer enthusiasm for the research behind SeroVital clearly got people excited,” said Chantelle Daines, a media consultant for SanMedica International, the company marketing the drug. “Within days of the show airing we were having trouble keeping SeroVital in stock!”

Daines is quick to point out however, that this is only one part of the treatment for fighting aging “including a sensible diet and exercise regimen. And, just like HGH injections, you have to remember to renew your monthly supply.” The cost of this supply is approximately $100 a month.

While the urge to turn back the clock is appealing to many, it should be pointed out that Dr. Oz, who was a cardiothoracic surgeon before his television days, has come under fire for some of his recent recommendations. Oz made news last year when he was called out by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for saying that there were unhealthy amounts of arsenic in apple juice. Tests done by the FDA revealed that to be untrue.

Who wouldn’t want to “defy aging and live younger”?

The creators of SeroVital claim to have come up with just the solution—and they’ve packaged it in supplement form.

This article looks at both the research and reviews of SeroVital hGH to look at what it is, what it claims to do and if it actually works.

What is SeroVital hGH?

SeroVital is a dietary human growth hormone (hGH) supplement made by SanMedica International, who claims it promotes anti-aging.

It contains amino acids and an Asian herb (Japanese Catnip), which the company explains will stimulate the body’s production of hGH.

SeroVital received a huge boost of sales after Dr. Oz featured the product on his show.

The company claims the supplement can:

  • boost hGH levels
  • decrease body fat
  • boost energy and mood
  • strengthen bones and increase lean muscle mass
  • improve sex drive
  • tighten skin and reduce wrinkles.

Summary: SeroVital is a dietary growth hormone (hGH) supplement. Manufacturer SanMedica International claims it boosts hGH levels and can therefore promote anti-aging.

SeroVital Ingredients

SeroVital is available in liquid, powder and capsule form.

They also offer wrinkle serums and anti-aging creams, but our focus here is on their SeroVital-hgh product.

The active ingredients include five amino acids and one herb:

  • L-Lysine HCL
  • L-Arginine HCL
  • Oxo-Proline
  • N-Acetyl-Cysteine
  • L-Glutamine
  • Schizonepeta powder (Japanese Catnip)

The first five ingredients are essential or conditionally essential amino acids, meaning they are not produced in the body or are in limited supply.

Amino acid supplements have been found to raise serum hGH levels, but only at very high doses (likely higher than what’s in SeroVital) or when taken without exercise (1, 2).

These type of supplements can also increase hGH levels, but only in the short-term (3, 4).

Schizonepeta, or Japanese Catnip, is a medicinal herb from China and Korea that has some anti-inflammatory effects and has been used to treat allergic skin reactions (5).

  • The capsules also contain gelatin, magnesium stearate, stearic acid, rice flour and microcrystalline cellulose, plus ingredients for coloring including titanium dioxide, candurin silver fine, Yellow No. 5 and Yellow No. 6.
  • The powder also contains natural flavor, sodium citrate, sucralose, stevia leaf extract, silica and annatto extract (for color).
  • The liquid concentrate also contains purified water, natural and artificial Flavors, sucralose, potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate (to preserve freshness), and FD&C Yellow 6.

Summary: SeroVital contains five amino acids and an Asian herb known as Japanese Catnip. On their own, some of these amino acids can increase hGH levels, but only under certain circumstances, while Japanese Catnip may display some anti-inflammatory effects.

Serovital and hGH

hGH is produced in the pituitary gland, located in the center of the brain.

It plays important roles in bone and muscle growth, body composition, and cell repair and metabolism. It can boost strength and exercise performance, and speed up recovery times as well.

It’s also directly related to body fat levels. Those with higher body fat typically have lower hGH levels. However, you can naturally increase your levels simply by losing weight (6).

hGH levels rise after exercise and sleep, and more is produced at night than during the day. Overall, hGH gradually declines as you age, so many believe that increasing its levels will help you age slower.

SeroVital’s biggest claim is that it can stimulate your body’s own production of hGH “without the cost or controversy of synthetic injections.”

In fact, they say it can boost hGH levels by 682% just 2 hours after a single oral supplement has been taken. This is among “a broad range of ages and BMI’s and included both genders.”

However, this number comes from SeroVital’s own 2012 study, which only involved 12 men and 4 women—all in their 30s. No peer reviews or other studies on SeroVital have been performed to prove this (7).

Summary: hGH is naturally produced in the body, and is crucial to growth, body composition, cell repair, strength, metabolism and recovery. Levels of hGH decline as you age. SeroVital claims it can boost hGH levels by 682%. However, this is only supported by their own, very small clinical trial.

Other Reported Benefits of SeroVital

By boosting hGH levels, SeroVital comes with many other benefits, at least according to their website.

These benefits may be seen in both men and women and include:

  • increases energy
  • boosts mood
  • improves sleep
  • reduces body fat
  • strengthen bones
  • heightens sex drive
  • tightens skin and reduces wrinkles

But in smaller type, they also state: “Whether these GH changes persist over a longer duration or have other positive effects is being further examined .”

This means the company’s own study only showed an increase in hGH. There was no report of the participants experiencing any other benefits.

Will SeroVital Help You Lose Weight?

Most people are interested in SeroVital to help reduce body fat, but no official studies have been done to prove this.

The individual amino acids in SeroVital could potentially support weight loss, or at least help increase lean muscle mass.

Many bodybuilders take amino acids for this reason, but studies on their effectiveness are either conflicting or not too convincing.

In particular, one study found that oral supplementation with amino acids capable of increasing hGH saw no greater increase in muscle mass and strength than strength training alone (8).

Even SeroVital’s happy customers aren’t totally convinced any weight loss they’ve experienced is directly due to taking the product. Such reviews look like this:

  • “This Is An Excellent Product. It is different for each person surely. It does not curb the appetite … I am exercising and drinking protein shakes and eat a lot of vegetables. And I have lost 20 lbs. though not from Serovital directly.”
  • “It’s no miracle but it works combined with good diet & exercise; been taking for years totally know the difference when one stops.”
  • “I have lost some weight – but I must add that I have also been dieting, but prior to taking Serovital, I could not lose weight even when dieting .”

It seems that going the old-fashioned route for weight loss—focusing on a well-balanced diet and exercise—is likely far more effective than SeroVital.

If this speaks to you, I recommend starting with these 77 proven ways to lose weight .

Summary: As SeroVital boosts hGH levels, the company also believes it can improve sleep and mood, increase energy and muscle mass, and reduce body fat and wrinkles. Aside from some customer reviews confirming this, there is no evidence SeroVital offers such benefits.

SeroVital hGH Side Effects

Unlike synthetic hGH injections, SeroVital’s amino acid combination will likely have fewer side effects.

From their website: “All of the ingredients contained in SeroVital have a history of safe use in healthy adults. While SeroVital has been shown to trigger a 682% mean increase in hGH levels, it is important to recognize that this increase is still within a physiologically normal range.”

That said, some customers have reported significant side effects, including:

  • swelling of hands and feet
  • acne
  • vertigo
  • headaches
  • achy joints
  • nausea
  • heartburn
  • fatigue

One reviewer even mentioned that the product could have possibly exacerbated her breast cancer.

At this time, it’s also hard to say what long-term use of SeroVital could do. Some of its individual ingredients can have their own side effects, especially when taken in large amounts.

For example, excessive oxo-proline in the body can cause metabolic acidosis (8).

Summary: SeroVital typically has few side effects, though some customers have reported experiencing swelling of hands and feet, headaches, fatigue and acne.

SeroVital Reviews

SeroVital’s 30-day supply comes in at $99.00 and is available on their website along with online retailers like Amazon, GNC.com and Ulta.com.

The average rating of the capsules between these three retailers comes in at around 3.7 out of 5 stars.

Some people have reported noticeable positive effects on their energy, mood, weight and skin. Most have seen little improvement, but are still willing to keep trying the product.

The most unsatisfied customers saw no change, experienced side effects, or felt the product was too expensive.

Here are what some positive reviews looks like:

  • “I was skeptical, but I am seeing changes so I will be ordering again. I am almost done with my first box. I am noticing more energy, I’ve lost 2lbs (without trying!) & I feel more peaceful – good mood, positive.”
  • “Feeling Younger! I have been taking Serovital for the last 6 months and I like the results. I seem to look younger than I did before I took it. I am 70 years old and look maybe 60 or younger.”
  • “We look and feel younger. My wife and I have been taking SeroVital for about three months. I have noticed that her face looks younger (less wrinkled) and her skin tone looks brighter. I sleep better (less lying awake thinking) and I have about 20% more energy which makes me feel younger. This stuff definitely works.”

And here are some of the negative reviews:

  • “Please don’t waste your money. I have been taking this supplement for 6 months, nothing happened. Please don’t waste your money.”
  • “I didn’t sleep any better but I was tired all the time. All they did was make me tired all day. I didn’t sleep any better but I was tired all the time. I had to stop taking them as I was having a hard time working.”
  • “Not worth $112. You can buy each of the ingredients individually and have up to a year of HGH-boosting aminos. $112 is a rip-off. This product should be around $20.”

Summary: At $99 for a 30-day supply, SeroVital doesn’t come cheap. Among main online retailers, the average rating for the product comes in at around 3.7 out of 5 stars. Happy customers report positive effects on their energy, mood, weight and skin, while many unsatisfied reviewers saw no change or thought it was a rip-off.

Is SeroVital hGH a Scam?

SeroVital’s major claim is that it can boost growth hormone (hGH) levels up to 682% and can therefore promote anti-aging.

Unlike synthetic growth hormone injections, SeroVital naturally stimulates hGH with its proprietary mix of five amino acids and an Asian herb known as Japanese Catnip.

According to the company’s claims, this increase in hGH can also help you reduce body fat, increase lean muscle mass, boost mood and energy, improve sleep and reduce wrinkles.

However, there is no evidence to back up any of these claims. Even SeroVital’s own, very small clinical trial only showed the 682% hGH increase; it didn’t track what benefits this boost may offer.

There’s also no telling what the long-term effects of using SeroVital may be. The company does state this, though:

“Upon discontinuing use you will no longer be nourishing the body to increase hGH levels. You can take SeroVital for however long you want, and you can stop whenever you want. There are no “withdrawal” symptoms if you stop taking it… other than feeling your age!”

This means, you’d need to keep taking SeroVital to realize any of its potential benefits, and at $99 a month, this gets quite expensive.

This follows a similar approach to other products that come with pretty extravagant claims (and often Dr. Oz endorsements) like “energy boosting” Vital Reds and Superbeets, and weight-loss “miracles” forskolin and the Thrive Patch.

Instead, you could supplement with some of the individual amino acids alone, or simply do what works: improving your energy balance.

After all, your body responds best to diet, and can already boost its own levels of hGH with some good quality sleep and exercise.

This’ll also save you the stress of throwing away all that money—which would probably age you just as fast anyway!

Serovital HGH: Worth Trying?

Serovital Reviews – There are many benefits you can enjoy from serovital hgh. In short, HGH supplements can keep your body looking and feeling young. The benefits of HGH that individuals have reported include decreased body fat, increased muscle mass, less wrinkles, hair color restoration, increased sexual function, higher energy levels, lower cholesterol, better mood and sleep, better brain, memory, vision and immune function and normal blood pressure.

The human growth hormone or HGH levels in your body are largely responsible for controlling these areas. Clinical evidence has proven that by increasing HGH levels in your body through injection therapies you can effectively get these results.

The most noticeable benefit that many experience from HGH supplements is lower body fat. A clinical test even showed that body fat could be reduced by as much as 14.4% in men who received HGH injections for a period of six months. The most affected area was the bell where 30% of the body fat decrease occurred within the first two months of treatment.

The theory among scientists is that HGH tells the body what to do with excess fat. It is believed that HGH therapy is more effective than traditional dieting methods since a diet doesn’t address the issues caused by the hormonal messaging system in the body.

Another popular research study showed that a group of men over the age of sixty achieved greater muscle mass after HGH supplementation even without going to a gym or working out in any way.

Other medical studies have proved this to be an effect of HGH supplementation. A study in London showed that after six months of daily HGH injections individuals seen an increase of ten percent. This shows some of the dramatic results that are possible with HGH supplementation.

Studies have also proved that serovital hgh can reduce wrinkles on the skin. This is because HGH is able to stimulate protein synthesis which results in a greater production of collagen and elastin.

These are two essential proteins in the skin that make up the skin’s structure. As we age these levels drop and wrinkles develop. By keeping these levels high, HGH can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

The most common sign of aging is thin or grey hair. HGH supplementation has been able to help in this area as well. HGH can help restore your regular hair color and even help restart new hair growth. In one study alone over two hundred individuals had thicker and fuller hair after taking HGH and over thirty of them experience new hair growth.

There is no doubt that HGH supplementation can provide you with many excellent benefits. It only makes sense that you would want to increase the levels of HGH in your blood stream. Even if you don’t have access to HGH injections there are still options to help you retain and increase the production of HGH in your body.

Consider getting an all natural HGH supplement which can help gives you body the building blocks it needs in order to supply its own natural HGH and provide you with the wonderful benefits listed above.

SeroVital: Dubious Anti-Aging Claims

Shares

How Lucas Cranach imagined the Fountain of Youth in 1546. Today some people imagine dietary supplements can restore youth.

I recently wrote about David Sinclair’s belief that aging is a preventable disease. Science has found intriguing evidence that certain treatments can slow the aging process in animals, but there’s no good evidence in humans so far. That didn’t stop him from devising his own hopeful anti-aging regimen based on the preclinical evidence. And it certainly hasn’t stopped dietary supplement companies from marketing a torrent of anti-aging remedies, some of which have a flimsy scientific rationale and others that are more fanciful. One websitec claims the following ingredients have been shown by science to have anti-aging effects: vitamins A, C, D, B3, B6, B9, curcumin, clove extract, ginger root extract, Indian gooseberry extract, L-carnitine, CoQ10, resveratrol, choline, glutathione, NAC, and alpha-lipoic acid. It combines all these in the Anti-Aging Topical Patch to be worn daily. Perhaps the most egregious offering is a product called SeroVital that claims to be a natural way to increase the body’s own production of human growth hormone (HGH).

Is raising HGH beneficial?

Human growth hormone has many essential actions in the body. Levels of HGH gradually decline after the age of 30. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, and raising levels may not be a good idea. Women with high levels of HGH are more likely to get breast cancer and men with high levels are more likely to develop prostate cancer, and individuals of both sexes are more apt to die at younger ages than those with naturally low HGH levels. Mice with very high levels of HGH have premature brain aging and reduced life spans. But some physicians cite studies indicating that the lower levels seen with aging are responsible for diminished energy, muscle loss, and decreased tissue repair, and they feel that bringing HGH levels up to the levels considered normal in young people will have health benefits that will make them feel younger. HGH is useful for some medical conditions, but according to the Mayo Clinic,

it is not intended to be used as an anti-aging medication. No evidence exists that shows HGH works against the effects of aging. In fact, taking HGH may be dangerous for some people.

Numerous other sources agree. An article on Quackwatch says that even HGH injections lack proven effectiveness and have significant side effects, and that so-called “growth-hormone releasers” should be regarded as fakes. It reports many enforcement actions that have been taken against doctors who promote HGH treatments. It reports harmful side effects including increased risk for cancer, cardiovascular disease, and behavior changes. It quotes an editorial in The New England Journal of Medicine that said the general use of HGH “now or in the immediate future” is not justified. And the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists has warned that the clinical use of growth hormone as an anti-aging treatment or for obesity is not recommended. The pertinent research and concerns are conveniently covered here.

The claims for SeroVital

The SeroVital website features testimonials calling it “magic” and “a fountain of youth”. It is a mixture of ingredients that allegedly increases the body’s own production of HGH. The active ingredients are five amino acids (lysine, arginine oxo-proline, N-acetyl cysteine, and L-glutamine), and a powdered herb, Japanese catnip. The package says HGH is associated with increased energy, decreased body fat, reduced fine lines and wrinkles, and deeper, more restorative sleep. That “association”, if true, would be with HGH, not with the mixture of ingredients in the product. The company claims it raises HGH levels by a whopping 682%. It also claims it strengthens bones and improves sex drive and the testimonials suggest even more benefits. There is a 30-day money back guarantee.

Amino acids have been shown to raise HGH levels, but only in high doses and only in the short term. Japanese catnip has some anti-inflammatory effects. Some SeroVital users have reported significant side effects including swelling of hands and feet, bloating, acne, vertigo, headaches, achy joints, nausea, abdominal cramps, weight gain, heartburn, fatigue, and a possible exacerbation of breast cancer. It costs $99 a month (that’s $1,188 a year) and would have to be continued indefinitely. Customers are directed to take 4 capsules on an empty stomach and told not to eat for two hours before or after taking it. And of course, it carries the usual warning that it has not been evaluated by the FDA and is not intended to diagnose, prevent, cure, or treat any disease.

Dr. Oz praises HGH

Dr. Oz says HGH is the key to feeling decades younger. He uses the terms Fountain of Youth and miracle. He recommends amino acids as natural remedies that increase the body’s own production of HGH. He cites a single study showing that a special blend of amino acids can spike your HGH levels by 600%. He recommends taking a supplement that contains glycine, ornithine, arginine, and lysine (only two of which are in SeroVital), and says appropriate products can be purchased from your health foods store for less than $20. Note that amino acids are not listed as one of the many ingredients of the Anti-Aging Topical Patch I mentioned above (in the first paragraph), and do not feature in Dr. Sinclair’s regimen based on preclinical research.

The research

An extensive review of the claims, the evidence, and the facts can be found here.

There is only one study that evaluated the mixture of ingredients in SeroVital. It involved a mere 16 subjects, 12 men and 4 women, age 32 +/- 14 years. It supposedly found that two hours after taking SeroVital, the body’s production of HGH increased by 682% as measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. There was no attempt to measure anything else. No mention of any clinically significant effects. No replication. No other peer-reviewed studies.

Conclusion: No evidence of clinical efficacy, and potential side effects

It might work. Without proper controlled studies there is no way to know. But if I had to make an educated guess, I’d rate the probability of it having beneficial health effects or anti-aging effects as very low. I suspect there are better ways to spend your money. Or you might just save your money and follow standard mainstream evidence-based advice: exercise more, eat less, and don’t smoke.
