‘The Bachelor’: Secrets About the TV Show That ABC Doesn’t Want You to Know

If you’re part of Bachelor Nation, you’d probably consider yourself an expert on all things Bachelor. However, the reality show has some dark secrets that ABC definitely doesn’t want you to know. Thanks to some contestants spilling the truth about what really goes on during the show, you’ll be questioning everything you thought you knew.

From remembering contestants’ names to the food on those one-on-one dates, here’s a look at everything ABC definitely wants to keep a secret about The Bachelor.

1. Contestants get tested for STDs before being cast

Before contestants are officially cast on the show, they need to go through an extensive application process. On top of all the contracts they have to bind themselves to, they’re required to take numerous tests. Those include “an extensive background check, STD testing, and a psychological examination,” according to Insider.

Plus, literally anything ABC learns about you through third parties is on the table to be released — as long as it’s under the condition that you’re exposing yourself to “the risk of death, serious injury, illness, or disease and/or property damage.”

Next: We’ve always wondered how they didn’t forget this about contestants.

2. The Bachelor or Bachelorette star often forgets contestants’ names

They can’t remember the names of all their prospective mates. | ABC

Have you ever wondered how the Bachelor or Bachelorette remembers so many names during those rose ceremonies? That’s because they typically don’t know everybody’s name, and producers are regularly on-hand to help.

Former Bachelorette Ali Fedowski told E! News, “Throughout the night a producer is never far from your side and constantly reminds you about everyone’s name. has flash cards with the pictures and names of every contestant.”

She added:

It is hard to remember everyone, even with the flash cards. It’s all so overwhelming. How do you remember the names at the rose ceremony? Well, I doubt many people could remember at 25, so the goes into the rose ceremony room and says a few names at a time and then leaves to get the next few names.

Next: You’d think ABC would provide more safety in the bedroom.

3. Fantasy Suites don’t come stocked with condoms

Courtney Robertson revealed this interesting fact. | ABC

Courtney Robertson, winner of Ben Flajnik’s season of The Bachelorette, wasn’t afraid to spill some dirty secrets about her time on the show — especially considering the two have since split. One of the biggest bombshells was revealed in her tell-all book, I Didn’t Come Here to Make Friends: Confessions of a Reality Show Villain. Apparently, the Fantasy Suites comes stocked with many things — except condoms.

Given the Fantasy Suites imply the opportunity to get more intimate (often meaning sex), you’d think they’d provide protection. Robertson admitted to Radar Online, “I didn’t realize how big of a deal that was when we wrote the book!”

Next: That Neil Lane ring isn’t necessarily yours even if you get a proposal.

4. You have to return your Neil Lane ring if you break up in under two years

If the couple breaks up within 2 years, the ring must go back to the network. | ABC

When couples get engaged at the end of the show, the Bachelor proposes with a Neil Lane diamond ring. According to Insider, those rings can cost upwards of six figures — so ABC doesn’t want them going to waste.

If the couple breaks up in under two years, regardless of getting married, the ring has to go back to ABC. After two years, if the couple has split, you’re only able to sell your ring if you give ABC written notice.

Next: ABC does, however, let this one thing go to waste.

5. The food on dates goes to waste

The food on those romantic dinner dates? They don’t actually get eaten! | ABC

ABC might not want those Neil Lane diamond rings going to waste, but food is regularly left untouched. Have you noticed those romantically displayed meals on one-on-one dates that the couples typically eat only one bite of?That’s because producers make sure contestants are well-fed before the date to keep them from actually eating on camera. They’d prefer the date to be more about the discussions and less about the food.

Past-contestant Jaclyn Swartz explained how it all goes down. “The food on dates is usually good, but the catch is that you aren’t supposed to eat it! No one wants to watch people stuffing their face on a date. If you’re eating, you aren’t talking,” she revealed.

“Instead, we eat before the dates, as we are getting ready. The producers will bring room service to your room, or a plate of food to where you’re getting ready in the house.”

Next: This might be enough of a reason for people to go on the show.

6. There’s a reason why contestants drink so much

Leslie Hughes | Alberto E. Rodriguez

It’s not just the cameras making it look like contestants drink all the time. They’re provided unlimited alcohol during their time on the show, ranging from wine to beer to champagne to shots of liquor. However, the alcohol isn’t there just for fun.

“It’s how they get you to be more talkative, more sensitive,” as revealed by Season 17’s Leslie Hughes. “When I came in for the producers’ weekend, I remember it was like 12 noon, and they were like, ‘You want some champagne, wine?’ And I was like, ‘It’s 12 p.m., noon!’ And they’re like, ‘Welcome to the Bachelor family.’”

7. Contestants are cut off from reality while filming

The Bachelor contestants are often kept in their own world. | ABC

You really are stuck in Bachelor world when you’re a contestant on the show. Chris Harrison told Entertainment Weekly, “There’s no TV or internet in the house — the whole thing is to be about the Bachelor and the show.”

Season 14’s Ashleigh Hunt confirmed Harrison’s claim: “We are not allowed to speak to friends or family until we get home. Phones and computers are taken away the day you get there. We sit in the house or by the pool; it gets pretty boring. You can not leave the house, ever.”

‘The Bachelor’: Ex-Contestant Leslie Hughes Spills Nine Secrets About the Show

Leslie Hughes was one of 25 eligible women to vie for Sean Lowe’s rose (and his heart) on this season of ABC’s reality dating show The Bachelor. Hughes, who was one of four African-American contestants this season, went on a “Pretty Woman” one-on-one date with Sean, and can be seen making cameos on 90210, Mike & Molly, Happy Endings, and even Scary Movie 5. While Hughes is still single (“Being on the show hasn’t helped me in that area!”), she calls being on The Bachelor—for which she was nominated by her mother and best friend—one of the best experiences of her life.

The 29-year-old poker dealer and actress talked to The Daily Beast about Bachelor dynamics, what Tierra is really like, her take on the show’s level of diversity, and more as she offers nine secrets from inside the Bachelor mansion.

1. Contestants must take an STD test.

Before you’re chosen to be on the show, many precautions are taken to ensure you will be a suitable candidate. And one of these precautions is an STD test. Hughes calls the tests “crazy” and says producers want to “make sure everyone is clean.” Naturally, they’re not the only batch of tests that contestants are put through: “You also have to do psych testing to make sure that you’re normal.”

2. There’s a lot of drinking. (Duh.)

Wine, beer, hard alcohol, and everything in between: you name it and The Bachelor supplies it. “It’s how they get you to be more talkative, more sensitive,” Hughes said of the house’s large supply. “When I came in for the producers’ weekend, I remember it was like 12 noon, and they were like, ‘You want some champagne, wine?’ And I was like, ‘It’s 12 p.m., noon!’ And they’re like, ‘Welcome to the Bachelor family.’”

3. There is no privacy.

According to Hughes, The Bachelor cameras never stop rolling. “They are on you all the time,” she said. “As soon as you wake up in the morning, your mic is put on you…When you go to bed, it’s taken off.” She also said the hardest part of filming the show is being away from family, and having zero alone time. “Having someone around at all times, you’re going to get emotional, you’re going to cry.”

4. You have zero contact with the outside world. Zero.

“None—absolutely none,” Hughes said, when asked about the level of privacy contestants have with the “outside world.” When entering the Bachelor mansion, the women are stripped of their cellphones, computers, magazines, music, and even books. “The only things I was allowed to keep were my journal and my Bible,” said Hughes. “We have nothing. We are completely cut off from the world. We have to talk to each other—we have nothing else to do.”

5. It’s not as glamorous as it seems.

Bunk beds, cramped living quarters, and tiny bathroom areas (only two for 25 girls!) makes living in the Bachelor mansion not as alluring as its title may make it seem. “We have to do our own cooking, our own laundry… We do everything you would do when you’re at home, except be able to go outside of your home,” Hughes said. And all of the clothes, hair supplies, and makeup are brought in from home, so it’s up to the women to look presentable for the cameras. “It’s a lot of suitcases,” she added.

6. Living in the Bachelor house equates to a lot of late nights.

“We filmed from September to November, “ said Hughes. But the nearly three months away from everyday life didn’t mean sleeping in and catching up on R&R as the production schedule dictates many, many hours of filming. “ was very long. We didn’t start until 7 at night and we didn’t finish until 8 in the morning!”

7. Not all the contestants are on the show to fall in love.

“I believe in the process, and if you’re there for the right reasons, it could totally work,” Hughes said of the probability of falling in love on the show. “I feel like you can fall in love anywhere.” But some of the women on the show might have ulterior motives for taking part in The Bachelor. “I don’t think everyone was attracted to Sean,” she said. “I know a few had been in relationships and they broke up at the time of the show, so… there’s all kinds of motives.” And what might those reasons be? “To get in front of America,” Hughes said. She also commented on the competitive nature of the show, suggesting some women want to see what could come their way after being seen on The Bachelor. “But you can’t compete for love,” Hughes argued. “Either someone is into you or they’re not.”

8. Tierra is the same girl America saw on TV.

Hughes was placed in sleeping quarters with Tierra and several other women. “We would wake up in the morning and we would say something to her and she would just stare and not say a word,” said Hughes of Tierra Licausi, the Bachelor contestant that America loved to hate. “You know she came into this saying she was only there for Sean. Unfortunately, I think she just has some things to work on,” she said. “The cameras can’t lie, because you’re on them 24/7.”

9. The Bachelor may or may not be racist.

Hughes, whose father is African-American, had always been aware of the show’s level of diversity. “From watching it from day one, there wasn’t a lot of diversity, were always Caucasian, blonde, blue eyes … It was always the same.” Upon finding out she had been cast on the show, a celebratory call to her father was the first phone call she made. “He was like, ‘You’re the first ethnic female!’ and then I get there and there are like five other women. I’m glad they opened up to diversity,” Hughes said, adding that even Sarah Herron, a contestant born with one arm, added another, different level of diversity among the women.

Last year a lawsuit was filed by two black men against the reality-TV series, claiming the show failed to feature nonwhite individuals. While Lowe notably mentioned in one of the first few episodes that he had dated many diverse women, and wasn’t concerned about the ethnicities of the contestants, this season did feature a larger percentage of ethnic women than seasons past. The lawsuit was eventually dismissed and Hughes suggests the reason she was chosen for the show had less to do with her skin color and more to do with the attractive qualities she possesses. “The characteristics we all had in common had to do a lot with what Sean was actually looking for,” she said.

When asked if Hughes thought the show would ever feature a Bachelor or Bachelorette of color, she was hesitant to respond.

“That’s a hard one,” she said. “I would love to say yes, but I don’t see it being anytime soon … I feel like they did make this big transition into this season, but it would have to be an even bigger leap to put an ethnic person as the main person.”

Shawn Booth is in insane shape. If you saw him win the heart of his now-fiancé Kaitlyn Bristowe on season 11 of The Bachelorette, you know those oh-so-tight abs and hot-dayum arms are nothing new. But he’s about to swim 2.4 miles, bike 112, and run 26.2, all to win the title of Ironman — or Iron Daddy, as he would prefer Bristowe call him (it’s a joke, calm down). That means his abs, arms, and everything in between have become even more toned. We caught up with Booth to discuss all things food, fitness, and of course, his funny girl fiancé before he competes in a couple months.

He scarfs down three breakfasts every day.

Booth’s day is two-fold right now: “I eat and I train,” he laughs. Since he fuels up before every activity, he winds up eating triple the amount of food you would every morning, starting with a protein shake before he walks Tucker Doodle, his golden retriever. He eats eggs, toast, and fruit when he comes back (sometimes adding turkey sausage and pancakes on the weekend), and another breakfast-type meal — Greek yogurt topped with granola — a couple hours later, after a workout.

Shawn eats four pieces of bread — just for one meal.

Booth doesn’t do eggs and toast like you do. For starters, he eats just the egg whites since they’re pure protein. The toast is what’ll make your eyes bug out, though. He packs so many slices onto a plate, it’s a laughable response to every brunch that’s ever made you so full, you can’t even. “I have three to four slices of Ezekiel bread with natural peanut butter,” Booth says.

He’s only had three drinks this year.

Prior to starting his IRONMAN training in December, Booth — like most of us — would have a few drinks every weekend. But he’s since completely cut alcohol out of his diet. “I think in 2017, I’ve probably had a total of three beers … maybe four,” Booth says. And doing that while living with a bonafide wine-lover like Kaitlyn — she just announced her new drink-and-gab podcast called Off the Vine, if that’s any clue as to how much she loves the stuff — is not easy. “It takes a lot of self-control,” Booth laughs.

His Friday night plans are the same every week.

Booth’s diet consists of a lot of food (he’s got to make up for burning almost 5,000 calories a day), but it’s all incredibly clean — until Friday rolls around, that is. “Kaitlyn and I are big pepperoni guys, and we usually order a pizza every week,” he says. Booth’s other favorite cheat meal: “A big, juicy burger.”

Shawn’s meals are full of lean proteins, good fats, and healthy carbs.

For him, lunches and dinners usually consist of a mish-mash of these foods: grilled chicken, ground beef, steak, green vegetables, sweet potatoes, pasta, brown rice, and oats.

He and Kaitlyn majorly disagree on this one thing.

“I think of cooking as a purpose for fueling my body, whereas she loves to put extra time into meals,” Booth shares. Luckily, he’s reaped the benefits of that while training for IRONMAN. “Kaitlyn’s been making a lot of the dinners lately, since I’m always running around like crazy,” he says. Recently, Bristowe even snuck a little cheese onto his usual grilled chicken — but it was for a special occasion. “She cooked chicken parm for my birthday, and that was pretty delicious,” Booth shares.

His workouts have totally changed.

Shawn’s raising money for the sweetest cause.

Many IRONMAN competitors choose to fundraise for a charity of their choosing, and Booth picked K9s For Warriors. It’s a program that rescues dogs from the streets or shelters and trains them to become service pups for veterans suffering from PTSD. “One of my closest friends served overseas as a Marine, and I’ve always wanted to do as much as I possibly can for our veterans,” he shares.

We see all sorts of folks come through the Men’s Health offices. But few of them know their stuff as well as Shawn Booth, the winner of season 11 of ABC’s The Bachelorette. That’s in part because Booth works as a personal trainer, but he also showed us one of the best on-the-go workouts we’ve ever seen.

We were lucky enough to sit down with Booth to not only get his thoughts on working out in small spaces and The Bachelorette, but also his take on flirting in the gym, how to approach women, and how sudden fame has affected his personal training business based in Nashville, Tennessee.

“It’s been a blessing and a curse,” says Booth, who is engaged to Bachelorette Kaitlyn Bristowe. “Trying to take on clients is difficult, because there are a lot of people who will reach out who just want to train with me once or twice—and they just come there and want to take a selfie.”

Despite this (or perhaps because of it), he’s successfully launched Healthy Meal Plans by Shawn Booth, a site for customized meal plans and tips. Booth himself is newly vegan (“I never in a million years thought I’d give up meat,” he says) and it’s given him a new excitement about never-discovered foods and meals that he’s never tried before.

Looking ahead to 2018, Booth plans to take more of a group fitness instructor role. Through his company Shawn Booth Fitness, he’s already led several sold-out classes with another trainer and Bristowe. “2018 is going to be a big year for us,” Booth says. We can’t wait to see what’s next for him.

Booth also treated us to his go-to small-space workout—and it’ll leave you panting. “If you’re like me,” he says, “and you’re traveling around all the time from city to city, just do these four moves, for four rounds, and you’ll get a full-body burn.”

What are the four moves? Well, one’s called the “burner-turner,” and you’ll have to see it to believe it.

Let’s be real: watching The Bachelor and drinking wine practically go hand in hand. Downing a glass (or, like, three) of Sauvignon Blanc while watching a handful of women duke it out over one guy has become a concrete part of my Monday routine, but lately, that’s resulted in a few too many Tuesday-morning headaches for my liking.

In an effort to cut back on my wine habit and get fit, I created a Bachelor workout game to play during Colton Underwood’s season of the hit ABC series — because it’s better to be sore than hungover, am I right? Here’s how it works: for some of the common (or not-so-common) actions and phrases that pop up during the show, there’s a corresponding exercise move to perform. If you want to torch calories and get toned while the drama unfolds before your eyes, print out this challenge and have it on hand every Monday night.

Ready to get strong AF while Colton (hopefully) finds his wife on national TV? Look ahead to see our official Bachelor Fitness Challenge.
