Jeannie Mai’s Before and After Weight Gain Photos Will Leave You Speechless
“The Real” host Jeannie Mai is an Emmy-winning talk show host, but that’s not her only admirable accomplishment. In May 2018, she announced a major weight transformation — and it’s not the kind you’d expect.
What she looks like now compared to what she looked like before (page 5) will amaze you. The reason she decided to gain weight (page 6) is just too relatable too ignore.
Jeannie Mai has always been ‘thin’
The television host is naturally petite, but also worked hard to maintain her thin frame. | Jeannie Mai via Instagram
For a long time, she pushed herself hard to fit into a certain mold. She wrote on Instagram that her choice to stay at a lower than average weight “came from my self control to lose ‘chubby’ teenage weight and a stressful idea that my body was built to look best ‘thin.’”
Next: She gained a lot of weight, but she did it for the right reasons.

She told her Instagram followers that in February 2018, she began a new training program and eating plan to become “as physically Strong as I am mentally Indestructable.” In just three months, she gained almost 20 pounds, probably mostly from muscle. How did she do it? And why?
Next: Some people eat to lose weight. Her diet was different.

Apparently, after years of avoiding carbs and not treating her body to the amount of food it deserved, Mai completely revamped her diet. She started eating “clean” and added more protein, more carbs, and more healthy food in general to her daily menu.
Next: Eating more wasn’t the only thing that helped.
The exercise regimen that helped her bulk up

She spent a lot of time in the gym “lifting heavy weights.” A few of her Instagram photos show her engaging in a variety of strength training exercises to build muscle and make good use of the carbs and protein she eats throughout the day.
Next: After three months, this is what she looks like now.
An ‘unusual’ transformation
She shared her transformation on Instagram. | Jeannie Mai via Instagram
Usually when people post about their weight online, they tell the story of how they shed pounds to “get healthy” and improve their body confidence. Mai did the opposite, posting before-and-after photos of her weight gain.
Next: Mai’s motivation to gain weight is actually pretty relatable.
Why did Jeannie Mai gain weight?
She was finally ready to stop restricting herself. | Jeannie Mai via Instagram
Surprisingly, Mai said that approaching her 40s kickstarted her weight gain journey. She wrote in her Instagram post, “As I’m nearing my 40s, I realize … why the hell should my body be forced to suffer?” Her “over controlling ways” kept her thin, but she basically realized, “What’s the point?”
Next: Is she really sending the right message about her weight?
Is weight change really about ‘self-control’?
Self-control isn’t what keeps all people thin. | Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images
Mai credited her “self control” when discussing how she remained relatively the same weight for 12 straight years. It’s important to remember that weight change, whether you’re gaining or losing, is a complex combination of factors that aren’t always under your control.
Sometimes, you have to do what you can amidst the circumstances you’re in. Sometimes, medications, health conditions, and stress make it seem impossible. Weight is just one measure of health, but it’s not the only one.

If you watch The Real, you’ve seen Jeannie Mai get real on the small screen talking to celebrities. Now, the 39-year-old Emmy winner is getting real about something personal: her weight transformation.
While most Instagrammers celebrate losing weight, Mai wrote an inspiring message about gaining 17 pounds—and how the extra pounds have made her feel better than ever.

“On the left is the first time I tried on this dress, at a weight I’ve kept for 12 years, 103 lbs,” she captioned a before-and-after post shared on Tuesday. “Staying 103 came from my self-control to lose ‘chubby’ teenage weight and a stressful idea that my body was built to look best ‘thin.’”
Mai then addressed the “after” image in her post, explaining that her mentality about weight and her body shifted when she hit her late thirties.
“As I’m nearing my 40s, I realize that I’ve been so much shit mentally and emotionally, why the hell should my body be forced to suffer (from my over controlling ways) too? So 3 months ago I started a new eating plan and training program and gained 17 lbs. I don’t have a weight goal..just a promise to be as physically as I am mentally .”
How did Mai gain the weight? She said she’s spent the past few months eating more and “saying to carbs!!” Weight lifting also helped her bulk up, a fitness activity she calls the “best therapy ever.”

Jeannie Mai and Jeezy have been very public about their relationship since they first became Instagram official back in September. The two were rumored to be coupled up for months before their red carpet debut, but now that they are “official official” both stars have been openly discussing and sharing their love.
“The Real” host posted a video of herself and Jeezy cruising through the streets in a drop top blasting Tevin Campbell’s hit, “Can We Talk.” Jeannie posted the happy video with the caption, “U know da vibezzz 😎💫❤.”

This latest Jeannie X Jeezy post comes just a few weeks after the couple spent their first Thanksgiving together. On an episode of “The Real,” Jeannie gushed about meeting Jeezy’s whole family.
“It was an unforgettable, surreal moment. It was the first time that we obviously spent Thanksgiving together, and to be able to have an intimate dinner with his family … his family is beautiful. They’re all such lovely people and they’re fun,” Jeannie told the audience.
She then went on to explain that Jeezy’s family made her feel right at home, and even went as far as cooking her chitlins and oxtails.
“They got mad cousins. And if you saw Story, we turned it into a lit lit party afterwards. There was a DJ and there was electric sliding … there was a lot of things going on. But this is what was most meaningful. I asked his auntie, who loves to bring different dishes, to make me — and I threw it out there thinking she wasn’t going to do it — to make me … her name is Mother, and I was like, ‘Mother, will you make me some oxtails and some chitlins?’ And yo, she came with Tupperware, chitlins and oxtail, and they were just for me! They weren’t for everyone, and she was like, ‘These are just for you, don’t let anyone else have them.’ It was so wonderful to meet his family and be able to spend time together. It was special.”
This is Jeannie’s first public relationship since her split with her ex of ten years, Eddy Harteis.

When it comes keeping her love life alive, Tamera Mowry-Housley would rather make her own adult film, than watch someone else’s.
“The Real” talk show co-host, 37, shared a juicy secret this week, revealing that she and her award-winning journalist husband, Adam Housley, have made their own sex tape…and it’s got a name. “Honestly, you guys, I don’t enjoy that,” Mowry-Housley said of viewing adult films while discussing with co-hosts Tamera Braxton, Adrienne Bailon, Loni Love, and Jeannie Mai. “I’d rather make my own and have my husband watch me…In the comfort of my own home, you guys!”
When asked if she and her former professional baseball player hubby have filmed themselves getting down and dirty, she admitted, “We did one… I didn’t like it! I don’t like watching!” Naturally, her counterparts couldn’t compose themselves. Mai even took to her feet, before inquiring whether the dynamic duo had named their little film. “I just want to ask you this. If you were to name it, what would your film be named?”
Meanwhile, Braxton interjected, joking that it would be called “Sister, Sister” — before the mother of two responded with a laugh, “I don’t think you’re ready for it. You guys are going to get me in trouble!” Finally, she answered, “I am in so much trouble but it would be called ‘Sweet and Juicy.’” Although we don’t anticipate Mowry’s sex tape to hit the web any day soon (or ever), the former child star joins a long list of celebrities including former WWE wrestler Hulk Hogan, “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” star Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton, Ray J, and Pamela Anderson among others, whose personal sex tapes
Of course, we’re not mad at the daytime star whose nuptials took place on May 15, 2011 — just six months after Housley popped the question during a trip to Venice in January. The duo tied the knot at the Villagio Inn & Spa in the groom’s native Napa Valley with 300 guests in attendance.

Jeezy’s Girlfriend Jeannie Mai Gets Raunchy Answering Oral Sex Question
Jeezy and Jeannie Mai are one of the world’s favorite couples right now. After starting off with some controversy when old videos resurfaced showing the talk-show host speaking about her love of “dark meat on the side,” she and Jeezy have ignored the backtalk and just went on with their merry lives. The happy couple posted a video of themselves jamming out in the car this weekend, listening to some classic tunes with the top down and singing to their heart’s desires. Jeannie Mai felt a need to respond to a few fan questions in the comments section and, on one of them, she even confirmed some raunchy details about their sex life.
Considering they’ve been together for a few months now, it’s safe to assume that the couple has sexual chemistry but one fan was genuinely curious, asking in their own way if she had explored what’s down there on the rapper’s body. Responding to their comments about “going down” on Jeezy’s manhood, Jeannie Mai confirmed that, yes, she has been down there and she’s into it. Good to know, I guess.
We’re not entirely sure why Mai would comment back on this but she clearly doesn’t give an eff about what people are talking about. Are Jeezy and Jeannie one of your favorite celebrity couples right now?

How Falling In Love with Lifting Helped Jeannie Mai Learn to Love Her Body
TV personality Jeannie Mai recently made headlines after posting an inspiring, self-love message about her 17-pound weight gain. Having struggled with body image issues for 12 years (the entirety of her career in entertainment), Mai has finally given up on the idea that being “skinny” means everything. (Related: Katie Willcox Wants Women to Stop Thinking They Need to Lose Weight to Be Loveable)
“As I’m nearing my 40s, I realize that I’ve been through so much sh*t mentally and emotionally, why the hell should my body be forced to suffer (from my over-controlling ways) too?” she recently wrote on Instagram. “So 3 months ago I started a new eating plan and training program and gained 17 lbs. I don’t have a weight goal…just a promise to be as physically strong as I am mentally indestructible.”
The response Mai got from her post was unexpected. “I cannot tell you the number of people in DMs asking me how they can gain weight,” she tells Shape. “Reading my story, and others like it, they’ve come to the realization that strong is sexy and they want to get there, too.”
Over the past couple months, Mai has had to change her mindset toward her body completely, she says. “I was 103 pounds for 12 years, and what’s crazy is that I actually wanted to weigh 100,” she says. “Honestly, it was for no other reason than the fact that I thought it would be cool to say that I weighed 100 pounds.”
Eventually, it got to a point where Mai started to be defined by her thinness. “Being skinny became a part of my description as a person,” she says. “People would say things like ‘Oh you know Jeannie, she’s so tiny’ or ask me how I’d stay so thin. When you hear things like that all the time, they begin to design you and brand you-and working in the entertainment industry, I just never gave myself the option to be anything other than what I had been defined as for the past 12 years.”
Mai says that her wake-up called was a long time coming. “A huge thing that influenced me to take this step was realizing that the conversation about women’s bodies and how they should and shouldn’t look was changing,” she says. “On my show The Real, we often encourage women to fight against body-shaming and own the skin that they’re in. But so often on the show, I’d refer to myself as having “chicken legs” and would call myself out for having a bony, nonexistent butt. Part of it was self-deprecating humor, but I also realized I was inherently body-shaming myself.” (Related: Blogger Unknowingly Body-Shames Herself and Shares the Comical Photo to Prove It)
The final straw came when Mai was going through her phone and cleaning out her pictures. “I saw the picture of myself in that mustard dress and felt a surge of shock and sadness,” she says. “It was like the dress was on a hanger, I looked so lifeless. My knees were barely there, my cheeks were so pointy, my eyes looked hollow-I looked sick.”
After speaking to some of her friends about how she was feeling, they encouraged her to put on weight and start working out in a different way. “At first I was like ‘what do you mean start working out?'” she says. “I was a cardio bunny and spent hours in the gym a day working up a sweat. But my friends were actually encouraging me to try workouts that helped me build muscle mass and make me stronger.” (Related: These Strong Women Are Changing the Face of Girl Power As We Know It)
It was then that Mai says she felt physically and emotionally prepared to make a change. “I started eating all of the things I wouldn’t dare touch,” she says. “For 12 years, I never touched rice, potatoes, carbs-anything that could contribute to weight gain. Salad was where it was at. Everything I ate was vegetable-based.”
“Now, I’m eating all sorts of complex carbs and even treating myself to burgers and doughnuts from time to time,” she added. “Sandwiches are my favorite food now, which is just crazy to me. I can’t believe I actively deprived myself of all these amazing foods for so many years.” (Related: 5 Ways to Gain Weight the Healthy Way)
Slowly but surely, Mai started putting on the weight, which she admits wasn’t easy for her at first. “I remember my heart beating out of my chest when the scale hit 107, which was usually the highest I’d ever let myself get,” she says. “But the numbers kept climbing and I had to really focus on not talking myself down and focus on my end goal, which was to become healthier and stronger.”
During this time, Mai fell in love with lifting. “I got introduced to weightlifting early on in my journey and it has changed my body drastically,” she says. “It only took a couple weeks before I started to feel stronger in my arms and started getting muscle cuts. My hips started rounding out and my butt became fuller.”
After a while, Mai realized that lifting weight was helping her fall in love with her body and appreciate it in new ways. “You just feel so victorious after lifting heavy. There’s something so gratifying about testing your strength and feeling surprised by it. It makes you realize that there’s no limit to what your body can do if you put your mind to it,” she says. (Related: 8 Health Benefits of Lifting Weights)
While she’s only three months into her journey, Mai has made some serious progress, which she credits to the mantra she uses to hold herself accountable. “You have to be real with yourself and figure out your truth,” she says. “Every time that voice in my head shames me for my jeans not fitting anymore, my truth sets in and reminds me how poorly I treated my body for so many years and why I deserve better.”
For those who might still feel like their worth is tied to the scale, Mai offers up this advice: “Feeling good about your body and feeling sexy comes from within, not from a number on the scale. Your body is just an extension of who you are. Treat it well, be kind to it, and just enjoy life. That’s where true satisfaction lies.”

Jeannie Mai’s Ex-Husband’s Girlfriend Accuses Star of ‘Making Up Lies for More Attention’
Jeannie Mai‘s ex-husband’s new girlfriend has a message for the tv personality.
On Friday’s episode of The Real, Mai, 40, opened up to her co-hosts Adrienne Bailon Houghton, Loni Love and guest host NeNe Leakes about having to pay alimony to ex Freddy Harteis.
“I was married to someone who had more money than me, but because I was the stronger earner and we lived in California — a shocking thing slapped me in the face when we divorced and I had to end up paying him my earnings,” Mai explained before adding that the experience taught her a lesson about “looking out for myself.”
The clip was then shared on Instagram, prompting a number of viewers to show their support of Mai. But not everyone agreed with Mai, with Harteis’ girlfriend Linsey Toole breaking her silence to slam the star.
“Looking out for YOURSELF is why you’re STILL miserable,” Toole wrote in the comment section of the post.
Image zoom Image zoom Linsey Toole/Instagram
“Your complete focus on YOURSELF is why you’re DIVORCED. YOURSELF being the most important thing to you in the entire world is why you keep making up LIES for MORE attention.”
“Ain’t nobody talking about YOU. Because we don’t care! Stop trying to tear someone down who has done absolutely NOTHING to you,” Toole continued. “Never one time has Freddy brought up your name or drug it through the mud where it belongs.”
“Every week you got some new dramatic story so that you can more pity and more attention. How many more lies are you going to make up before you are satisfied? Freddy and I are both working our butts off to have what we have. Not because you gave anything. Freddy walked away from 1 MILLION dollars so he could finally give our family peace. And God has blessed him fruitfully in doing so! Let it go. Stop trying to make up things for people to feel sorry for you.”
“You made Freddy signed to keep his mouth closed. I didn’t sign for this very reason,” Toole wrote.
Toole then threatened to expose Mai further if she continued to talk down on Harteis.
“I knew you would come back at his throat again. I will speak the truth Jeanie . I’m pre-warning that I will tell what really happened if you continue to publicly lie and humiliate Freddy!”

Toole also shared a clip from the episode on her Instagram Stories, slamming it as “fake news.” “Ratings must be down again. Waiting on that alimony check,” Toole wrote.
A rep for Mai did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
Mai and Harteis announced their divorce in October 2017. Just six months after news of their split broke, Harteis revealed he was expecting his first child with Toole. Harteis and Toole welcomed a baby girl in October 2018.
Since their divorce, Mai has been candid about the stress it’s caused ever, even revealing that if she could turn back time, she wouldn’t have even married Harteis.

“Knowing what I know now about who I married, I wouldn’t have married him,” Mai said, holding back tears, on an episode of The Real in October.

“It’s just crazy. You hear all the time that money can change people. Well, divorce can really change people. It’s just so weird because the one thing that he would always say back then is like, ‘You really, truly don’t know a person until they don’t get what they want.’ But I never thought he would be the one to prove that to me,” Mai explained as she began to cry.
Though the exes were amicable when their split was announced, they are no longer on good terms.
“It f—— sucks. It’s terrible,” Mai said on an episode of The Breakfast Club, opening up about her divorce.
“You wake up with a rock in your heart and you feel like you can’t really make it through the day because it’s just so heavy. Especially when finances get involved. Especially when people change,” Mai continued.
Mai said she felt her and Harteis’ divorce “turned when, I would say, when money got involved, and ego.”
She also addressed the reason for their split, saying the fact that she does not want to have children wasn’t the only factor.

Nonetheless, Mai has since began dating again.

In January, Mai revealed she’s been spending a lot of quality time with rapper Young Jeezy after friend Malika Haqq shared a photo of Mai and the rapper together on Instagram.
“You guys know that I’m multi-dating right?” Mai explained to her co-hosts Loni Love and Tamera Mowry after Adrienne Bailon questioned her relationship status.
“Jeezy and I hang out,” Mai continued. “He’s very special to me, so we don’t really have a label to define what it is we’re doing. We’re just having a good time together.”
Jeannie Mai said she went through a difficult period in her life where she used drugs to mask her pain.
During Tuesday’s “The Real,” Jeannie opened up about her past substance abuse after her co-host Adrienne Bailon asked what made her want to try them in the first place.
“I definitely experimented, and I know now at 40 looking back that I had a really dark time in my life when I split from my family and moved out, lived in San Francisco — like, every drug you can imagine was there — and honestly, it replaced the joy that I didn’t have,” the stylist began.
But coming down off the drugs eventually caused her to rethink her choices.
The panel — including Tamera Mowry-Housley and Loni Love — went on to discuss how parts of hip-hop culture “normalizes taking drugs” in their songs and videos, which can affect a younger generation not educated on the pitfalls of illegal substances.
“I mean we’re at the club singing, ‘Molly, Percocet,’ like this is so easy but we’re talking about things that actually kill you,” explained Jeannie.
“And kids don’t know what it is, so they’re looking it up and then when they hear it, they’re like, ‘Oh, this matches that song, with that artist that looks so cool,” she added.
Jeannie admitted she knew what she was doing was wrong when she abused drugs, as she was always “rebellious,” but soon realized she was risking her life as well.
“And so today, I still pay consequences for being naughty. I still have to check myself and go, ‘Was that really worth it?’ Or in the moment how do I turn on that filter to know that that put myself in danger or risk situations that I’m in. And that took maturity, but you shouldn’t have to wait until you’re a grown woman because you might not get there!”
“That is real!” exclaimed Adrienne in a congratulatory tone.

The Snowman made an epic return with his TM104 debuting as a top-five album on the Billboard 200. But despite all the praise his new project has received, Jeezy’s “new” relationship is stealing headlines.
It has long been rumored that Jeezy and The Real co-host Jeannie Mai were an item. It wasn’t until Wednesday that the two confirmed their status by posting matching couple pictures to their respective Instagram accounts.

Although he decided to take things to social media, Jeezy is still reserved about their relationship. When the hosts of Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning asked about his significant other, the rapper quickly evaded the question.
“Depends on who you asking,” Jeezy said at the interview 12-minute mark when Laura Stylez claimed the relationship came out of nowhere. “I rather go back to the retirement by the way… But, nah. Life’s good.”
While he was able to shake the pressure from the radio hosts, he couldn’t escape the commentary that surfaced on social media.
Idk about people being mad at Jeezy, but the convo around their relationship stems from Jeanie’s past comment that she only views black men as just for sex. Which plenty black men seem to think is a good thing. https://t.co/x8TymDOF26

Jeannie Mai literally was married to a Trump supporter and only left because they couldn’t agree on whether to have kids. Now she’s dating Young Jeezy. The fact that black folks are literally out here dating people who are indifferent to racism is so baffling to me. pic.twitter.com/6vKycJPrJQ

These opinions haven’t pressured Jeezy or Mai into responding. It seems like the Snowman is using skills he learned on the triple-beam to balance his personal life with his and Mai’s career ambitions.
