- How to Wear Leggings: Avoid These Style Mistakes
1. Slip on a Sparkly Tunic
Dressing head toe in shades of black and gray look sophisticated and slimming. Add a sparkly fabric with metallic fibers to your monochromatic look, and you create a holiday outfit that is glamorous and chic. Suede boots, a velvet bag, and swingy beaded earrings make you party-ready. Get ready to shine!
2. Wear a Crisp White Shirt with Holiday Accessories
Nothing looks as fresh and snowy white as a long, crisp white shirt. This one is a beauty with its black piping and tuxedo styling. All you need are a couple of touches of Holiday red to make this look fabulous. Ho-Ho-ho, and you’re ready to go!
3. Turn a Short Party Dress Into a Top
When you see a glam party dress, you love, but think it’s way too short to feel comfortable in, add a pair of leggings. By doing this, you are transforming your dress into a beautiful tunic. When you accessorize it with a sleek clutch and refined suede booties, you have a cool and edgy holiday evening outfit.
4. Get Festive in a Green Asymmetrical Top
It’s Christmas, so why not wear something evergreen? This artsy green top was made for modern gals who like to dress with an edge. The asymmetrical hem is bold and dramatic and is perfect for holiday cocktail party mixing and mingling. Wear it with leather leggings for a sexy holiday vibe.
5. Cozy up in a Long Sweater with a Christmas Vibe
A long sweater is always a great idea with leggings. This modern, color-blocked one will turn heads. Imagine cozying up with friends for a chat by the fire, drink in hand. Wouldn’t this red and burgundy mix look beautiful beside the flickering flames? I love the neckline too. It’s high like a turtleneck but more graceful. In other words, it is not going to bunch up any extra skin at your neck like a Christmas turkey.

Holiday parties are in full swing, which is great because who among us doesn’t want an excuse to both eat and drink more than we should? The only problem is that when you go to a party, it usually means that you have to change out of your lounge clothes, wash your hair, put on makeup, and chat with people who know everything about you… except that you swear you’ve never met them before. Maybe it’s a small price to pay for unlimited quantities of Chardonnay, but still, going to a party takes work. Because, you know, unlike Beyonce, we most certainly did not wake up like this.
But, you know what? We’ve got some news for you. Though we can’t save you from room temperature artichoke dip or that person whose name always escapes you (Mary? Angela?), we can help you with the wardrobe department. Because, let’s face it, once you’ve got the outfit figured out, the rest of it (the hair, the makeup, the unpleasant tweezing of chin hairs) doesn’t seem so bad after all.
So, without further ado, ladies, how to get away with wearing leggings to a holiday party:
Option 1: Sleek Cheeks Leggings + Tunic + Booties + Statement Necklace
This is one of our go to outfits because it’s so, so, so easy (seriously, did we mention how easy it is?). Getting dressed takes approximately 2.5 seconds — and the best part? No shaving of legs required. Oh, thank you, Santa, Christmas miracles do come true!
Completing this outfit is really simple because everything you need is right in your closet. Sleek Cheeks Leggings? Check. (If not, click here to purchase!) Bright colored tunic? Check. Booties? Check and check. And, last but not least, a statement necklace? Oh, who are we kidding, you probably have about a hundred.
This look is quick, painless, and most importantly, it’s comfortable. While everyone around you is breaking out in hives because of their wool sweaters and sneaking into the corner in an attempt to quickly hike up their tights that have fallen to their ankles, you’ll be basking away in your insanely comfy outfit of choice. Plus, did we mention that our Sleek Cheeks leggings will keep your tummy in check while you hit up the buffet for a third time and pound that wine like Jesus is about to turn it back into water? Yeah, they’re pretty much the greatest.
Option 2: Booty Patootie Bootcut + Long Sleeve Top + Puffy Vest + Plaid Scarf
Because not all holiday parties require you to dress up, we wanted to give you a casual option that didn’t involve jeans. Because, well, we don’t know if you’ve noticed this, but they don’t give a whole lot of give — and let’s be honest, having room to breathe (and grow!) is pretty important when you’re in a competition with yourself to see just how many sugar cookies one can eat before exploding.
This outfit is great because it’s comfortable and casual, but it’s not too casual. Anyone can put on a pair of slacks and an old Christmas sweater and call it a day, but you, my dear, will be wearing an outfit. You’ll be winter chic amongst a sea of Nora Kranks…
because, girl, you are fabulous.
Option 3: Sleek Cheeks Leggings + Sparkly Top + Heels
If you’re headed to a dressy holiday party, prepare yourself for the best news ever: you don’t have to wear a skirt. It’s 2015. If women can wear the pants in the relationship, then we can certainly wear pants to a party if we so choose. Besides, it’s too cold for bare legs — and we haven’t seen our razor in months. So, pants it is.
To make this outfit work, we suggest pairing our Sleek Cheeks Leggings with a longish sparkly (or just a fun patterned) top and some fabulous heels. When rocking this outfit, we love a sleek high pony with a red lip or a dramatic sock bun with a cat eye. Add some bangles to those wrists and a sultry color to your nails (don’t forget about the toes!) and you are good to go.
Comfy never looked so good.
10 Best Shoes to Wear with Leggings
As well as being quite possibly the most comfortable pants ever, leggings are also incredibly versatile. Not only are they perfect for the gym, but they can also suit a range of other outfits, including athleisure, casual and smart casual ensembles. Of course, making your leggings look great for any occasion is all about how you style them. In particular, your footwear plays an essential role in how your leggings are perceived. So, to help you look awesome while feeling comfy, we’ve rounded up a selection of the best shoes to wear with leggings. From classic sneakers to chic loafers, these footwear options have you covered almost any outing.
1. Lace-Up Sneakers
Lace-up sneakers are without a doubt the easiest shoes to pair with leggings. Thanks to the sporty aesthetic of both leggings and sneakers, the combination works perfectly together. Although you can wear the look in a variety of ways, it appears particularly chic when styled with an athletic edge. To nail the style, start with a pair of sports leggings and minimal sneakers. Then, add a fitted, high-neck crop top and cap. You can also add jewellery, such as hoop earrings for an extra dose of attitude.
SHOP THE LOOK
2. Slip-On Sneakers
Lace-up sneakers aren’t the only type of sneakers that look great with leggings. Slip-on sneakers can also appear seriously stylish with these minimal pants. While still looking somewhat sporty like traditional designs, slip-on styles have a more minimal aesthetic. As such, they project a more casual and relaxed vibe, making them ideal for weekend ensembles. So, next time you need to run some Sunday errands and want to look good doing so, try teaming a pair of leggings with some slip-on sneakers. A simple crop top and cosy coat will complete the look perfectly.
Loafers can make a surprisingly stylish footwear option to wear with leggings. Thanks to their chic and polished appearance, they can be used to dress leggings up for a smart appearance. If you’re unsure how to wear the combination, try teaming it with a long, button-up shirt in a fashionable print. For added polish, you can also throw a blazer on over the top. The resulting look will be sophisticated and stylish yet comfortable and laid-back.
Want to look effortlessly cool when rocking your favourite leggings? All you need to do is add a pair of slides. These simple, slip-on shoes are the perfect blend of sporty and street. Therefore, they make an excellent choice for achieving an on-trend athleisure appearance. So, next time you need an outfit that’ll stylishly see you through both yoga and brunch, be sure to try this combination. While it can work with a variety of options on top, we love it with a simple tee and cosy yet chic oversized sweater.
5. Over-the-Knee Boots
In winter, you can’t go wrong pairing leggings with over-the-knee boots. The look is not only stylish but can also be seriously sexy. So, instead of relying on your black, skinny jeans for nights out, consider a pair of leggings instead. As well as being more comfortable than jeans, leggings will also fit better beneath slim boots. To nail the look, try teaming your leggings and long boots with a slim-cut, turtleneck sweater and cropped leather jacket for an edgy all-black outfit.
6. Ankle Boots
Ankle boots are a classic and chic footwear option that can work with a variety of pants, including leggings. While they look great with standard leggings, you should also consider trying them with a leather pair. By teaming black, heeled ankle boots with leather leggings, you’ll instantly have an edgy and on-trend outfit. Just pair the combination with a black, long-sleeve bodysuit and chic cape for a gorgeous outfit that can easily take you from day to night.
Think heels don’t work with leggings? Think again. Pumps can actually partner perfectly with leggings for a stylish look. The key to making the outfit work is to strike a balance. As leggings and heels make your bottom half appear long and lean, try offsetting them with something looser on top. In particular, a long shirt that finishes at the top of your thighs can work fabulously with leggings and heels. You can also add a loose sweater or chunky jacket over the top if the weather’s cold.
8. Ballet Flats
Thanks to their simple and slim design, ballet flats work perfectly with leggings. As such, the combination should be your go-to for a look that’s casual yet chic. When it comes to deciding what to wear on top, the choice is yours. You could try a crop top and leather jacket, a sweater dress, a chambray shirt and scarf or something else. As your pants and shoes will be minimal, you’ll be free to experiment with your top half.
It may surprise you, but sandals can look fantastic when worn with leggings. The trick to successfully rocking the combination is all about finding the right style. To start with, try opting for flats for casual daytime outfits and heeled designs for nighttime party ensembles. Then, you can choose your specific style. Consider simple sandals with minimal straps for a chic look and bolder multi-strap designs for an edgier appearance.
10. Knee-High Boots
A pair of leggings teamed with knee-high boots makes for a cute autumn or winter outfit. To keep things casual, choose a pair of flat boots in either suede or leather. Then, add an oversized sweater and finish things off with a cute hat, such as a beanie or baker boy cap. While this outfit can be chic and comfy for all ladies, it can make an especially great choice for those who are pregnant.

How to Wear Leggings: Avoid These Style Mistakes
5 Common Mistakes When Wearing Leggings
Mistake #1 Leggings = pants
Oh, this is a big one. The fabric on a proper legging should be thick so you do not see the person’s skin peeking through. If you can see through the leggings, then they’re probably too thin or they’re tights, not leggings, and tights are NOT pants. In fact, it’s a good rule of thumb to wear leggings as if they are not pants as well. Cause guess what? They’re not.
Mistake #2 Tight top + tight bottoms
Many women try to coordinate leggings with cropped or tight, fitted tops. No, thank you. No matter how great you look from the rear, balance and layering are important when it comes to wearing leggings well. Let’s think back to Mistake #1 and remember that leggings are more like tights than pants. Balance out form-fitting leggings with looser, roomier tops, sweaters, or tunics.
Mistake #3 The walking anatomy lesson
If we wanted an anatomy lesson, we’d go buy ourselves a Female Anatomy Doll, not go to the mall looking for women making Mistake #3. Wear leggings with longer shirts, tunics, or a short dress. Think mid-thigh length or, at the shortest, right below the hip and cover that rear.
Mistake #4 Disco revival
While there is probably some woman out there who can rock some silver, gold, or high-gloss leggings, let’s all assume we’re not her. When it comes to leggings, steer clear of the shine, which can show bulges or create them even where there are no bulges. Stick to opaque, shine-free leggings.
Mistake #5 Life is one big aerobics class
Life is NOT one big aerobics class, so please don’t go around dressing like it is.
How to Wear Leggings — the Right Way:
Make no mistake. Leggings are not just for women with buns of steel. If you wear them well, anyone of any body type can look great in them. Let’s take a look some great legging looks.
With a shirtdress
With a long sweater
With a tunic
With a skirt
And if you must reveal some rear, try denim jeggings
