You might recognize Iskra Lawrence as one of the faces featured in Aerie’s Photoshop-free #AerieReal campaign, but posing for unretouched photos in her underwear is just the beginning of this British model’s crusade for women’s body acceptance.

In addition to serving as an ambassador for NEDA (National Eating Disorder Association), the former competitive swimmer teaches classes through The Body Project, which helps young women overcome eating disorders, and she recently joined newly launched size-inclusive style site Runway Riot as its managing editor. Lawrence also uses her hugely popular Instagram account as a platform for promoting body confidence by sharing images of her gym workouts, stretch marks, and cellulite with her more than 631,000 followers.

The social media star loves burgers and chocolate as much as she does working out, so of course we had to reach out and ask exactly how she maintains those killer curves while still enjoying her favorite foods guilt-free. Keep reading for her refreshing, balanced approach to food and fitness.

I start an average day by:
Blindly roaming around my tiny New York City kitchen, collecting together some fruit and veggies for my morning juice. While I sip on my juicy creation, I start catching up with my and Runway Riot’s social media accounts—doing my best not to escape back to my bed when I see I have hundreds of DMs to reply to!

For breakfast I had:
A fresh juice—that’s always somewhere in the mix.

The one thing I’d never eat is:
Eggplant. I associate it with pretty inedible things for some reason. I’m not a fan of oysters either; they have an alien-esque look for me, thus I find them hard to swallow!

The three ingredients you’ll always find in my kitchen are:
Avocados, as they’re the only food that has such complete nutrition. You can survive off them if you were stranded on an island. Real talk! Eggs, as I poach, fry, and scramble them—not to mention I love baking, so at any one time, we have at least 20 eggs in our fridge. Chocolate counts as an ingredient, right? I have always gained a few pounds when I travel back from England because my case is full of Galaxy and Dairy Milk.

For lunch I had:
I threw in a burger from my local Five Guys—what can I say!

My all-time favorite workout:
Squats all day!

My go-to healthy restaurant:
I love Sweetgreen. They do the best create-your-own salads with salmon.

If I need to shape up before a big event …:
It’s all about consistency, as I’ve been working for the body I have today for the last four years. I do my best to train at least three times a week, though sometimes it doesn’t happen. I don’t feel any pressure to work out right before a shoot because I’ve already put the hard work in.

Today I snacked on:
I carry protein bars with me in case I get hungry. My faves are Quest bars.

The health trend I just can’t get behind is:
I’m not into cutting foods out of my diet.

My go-to cocktail:
I actually don’t drink!

For dinner I had:
There are no rules for me: Dinner—often leftovers—can be breakfast, or dessert could be for dinner.

Lyzabeth Lopez (@lyzabethlopez) for fitness tips, as her body is so strong. She’s great at fully expanding each exercise to make sure you get the technique right. Crazy Vegan Kitchen (@crazyvegankitchen) has everything to satisfy your taste buds from cheesecake to tacos, and it’s all super healthy!

My signature healthy dish is:
Salmon, sweet potato wedges, and broccoli.

My (edible!) guilty pleasures are:
Chocolate and burgers.

My biggest health tip for travelers:
Prepare, and don’t use traveling as an excuse. Research healthy restaurants or food stores, and buy snacks—nuts, fruit, protein bars—so you don’t reach for junk. Even if you only do squats while you’re brushing your teeth or some ab exercises before bed, just do it! You will thank yourself for it.

The top three songs on my workout playlist right now are:
“Jumpman” by Drake & Future, “How Deep Is Your Love” (Chris Lake Remix) by Calvin Harris, and “Down in the DM” by Yo Gotti.

My go-to activewear pieces are:
A supportive sports bra and a very stretchy pair of leggings.

My go-to health app:
The 8 Minute Abs app. It kick-started my journey to a flatter stomach. You can do it every day when you wake up and see results in a month.

The best part of my job is:
Receiving hundreds of direct messages every day from young women who have been inspired by my journey and the work I do with NEDA, Aerie, and Runway Riot. They are my daily motivation, and I want to make the fashion industry a more inclusive, body-positive place for them.

There is no secret. I can tell you what I do. Gym 3 times a week for the last 5 years – consistency is the key. What works for me is squats as heavy as possible, lunges, leg presses, skipping. It’s very much a mixture of heavy weightlifting and HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). But it’s not easy and I’m anxious you do what is right for you. I do this type of training because it works for me and my body – I love this kind of training and I like the way it makes me feel and the way it works for my shape. My advice would be to try all sorts of exercise – see what works for your body – what makes you feel fit and strong – and what you enjoy. And don’t set unrealistic goals just try to be the best version of you you can be. Because that’s better than trying to look like anyone else or striving for perfection that doesn’t exist. Queen of body positivity Iskra Lawrence was body-shamed and abused recently after wearing a t-shirt with the word ‘femminist’ across it.

Users branded her ‘slutty’ and ‘fat’.

Her response was excellent. She took to Instagram once again to share the core beliefs of femminism – a cause that should allow for women to avoid being appraised for their ‘marriage worth’ (that was a genuine comment).

As the shoot starts to wind down, Iskra Lawrence is eyeing up a cake from a famous food store (the one with the ampersand and a nice line in porcine sweets) that’s lingering just out of shot. We’ve all had a good ol’ chomp, and our cover star is staring with intent. This international model, Instagram superstar and body positivity campaigner knows good cake – and isn’t afraid to eat it.

‘Of course I eat cake, I’m not crazy!’ she explains, because famous people have to explain everything. ‘It’s just that now I know when to stop.’

‘Now’ is the key with Iskra because she used to be in a very bad place indeed – more on which later. And right now, she’s just putting in the last pouts and poses on one of the most enjoyable shoots Women’s Health has ever known. Just a few more minutes and the cake’s hers.

It’s one of the coldest days of the year/ decade, and our studio – somewhere East London-y, a rare patch of warehouses and dodgy garages gentrification is yet to reach – is so big you’d need Trident to heat it. So we’re all done up in Eskimo-style clobber while Iskra’s basically in bra and pants, never moaning, not even once.

She bounces over to my designer- imposter chair, crumbs in her wake, like the most fun one out of a Hanna-Barbera cartoon.

She has the sort of energy usually referred to in the business as ‘infectious’. And it kind of is.

Iskra has everyone smiling and laughing and at ease, none more so than her – bearing in mind she’s been in next-to-nothing for the best part of five hours, even nipping off to the loo without so much as a dressing gown, taking in the gawps from the communal studio café as she goes.

‘Oh, I stopped caring what people think a long time ago!’ she laughs.

Iskra’s ‘thing’ amounts to 3.2 million Instagram followers and counting, an average of 500,000 likes per post, being among the BBC’s ‘100 Women’ of 2016, the face of Simply Be, an ‘#AerieREAL Role Model’ for American Eagle lingerie brand Aerie, creator of, body- positivity guru, ambassador for the National Eating Disorders Association, common-or- garden cake-eater, and 26 whole years of age. Not bad for a girl from Kidderminster.

And you’d be forgiven for thinking that Iskra popped out fully formed, a twinkling social media behemoth, because harsh reality doesn’t look too pretty on Instagram. You can’t lter rejection, right?

‘People see the finished product,’ says Iskra, ‘but don’t know the 13-year struggle behind it.

They see me online, my lifestyle, and think, “Oh, she’s just some girl who got there because she’s a pretty model.” They don’t know what I went through, that I had to think outside the box, how I used social media to grow, how I networked, how I’ve spoken at different places. Did you know I’ve done TED talks?’

I didn’t.

‘I’ve even spoken at Harvard!’ While I’m busy composing strongly worded emails to my researcher in my head, Iskra tells me about the first photo shoot she ever went on. She’d just won an Elle Girl modelling competition, and was 13.

‘It was a test shoot and there was another model there. She was older than me, and dating Jenson Button. She was gorgeous and blonde and skinny and successful. I remember thinking I had to be just like her, but the more you try to be like someone else, the less successful you’re going to be. You need to be different, that’s what’s going to make you stand out.’

A few years later, proving her point, Iskra was dropped by her agency.

‘I was doing extreme dieting for the modelling industry because I couldn’t fit into sample sizes. I lost six years punishing myself with aggressive exercise. I had body dysmorphia. I tried every crazy diet.’

That, and a very bad boyfriend, was a turning point.

‘He tried to manipulate me. He would tell me that by modelling I was a piece of meat. He never wanted me to feel beautiful, or that someone else could want me.

‘I didn’t have any respect for myself, and my relationship fed into that.’

So it was a dangerous co-dependency? ‘Yes.’

Iskra is now signed to Models 1, who love her just the way she is, a healthy size 14. ‘They accepted me, and for the first time I had people saying, “You can now do the things you’ve dreamt of.”

‘When I gave up that pursuit of change, it also made me give up all those other things that came attached – the dieting and the restriction. And when I gave up those pursuits, then the food started to taste different!’

Iskra doesn’t believe in fad diets. She believes in eating cleaner, not clean eating. Because the former is healthy and sustainable, the latter bonkers and doomed to failure.

Iskra Lawrence’s Lower Body Workout Is Tough, TBH, But Here’s How You Can Copy Her Moves

I’ve been following model and activist Iskra Lawrence ever since one of her posts appeared in my Instagram recommended feed. Truthfully, I don’t follow many models, but I was instantly attracted to her advocacy for body positivity and inclusion in advertising, and her openness about her own journey to becoming more confident. Just when I thought she couldn’t get any cooler, I watched Iskra Lawrence’s lower body workout video on Instagram and was, yet again, in awe of just how strong this woman really is.

The video, which Lawrence posted on her Instagram on Saturday, Jan. 26, shows the #AerieReal model going through four different exercises, which are all great for strengthening your lower body muscles (more on those deets in a bit).

Generally speaking, Lawrence’s relationship with exercise has definitely been a journey. In a 2016 Instagram post, she described how she works out not out of some sense of obligation, but as a way to love her body and have fun.

It’s taken me 5 years of consistently working out no matter where I am (you can exercise anywhere at anytime esp when traveling) trying all sorts of PTs, classes & YouTubes to get to the point where I LOVE working out because I want to be healthy and strong for life.

Even on the days when she might not have wanted to move her body at the start of a workout, the endorphins have always seemed to kick in just in time, Lawrence wrote in the 2016 post. “I have never regretted a workout and when I struggle for motivation I just remember how good I felt after the last time,” she explained in the caption of the post. “No one can hand you motivation but you and your body deserve it. You only have one body this lifetime so why not look after it.”

Barbell back squats

“A squat really works your whole body and it works your core if you’re engaging it properly, so it’s a really dynamic exercise that’s great,” Lawrence told POPSUGAR UK back in January 2018. “For me, it’s the basis of strong legs and glutes, and it’s the go-to.”

Squats are also great because the variations are endless, so you can tailor the movement to your specific routine and capabilities. You can do jump squats, single leg squats, plié squats, or a barbell back squat, as Lawrence is doing in the beginning of her Instagram video, with a variety of weights.

If you are using weights in your squats, be extra careful that you aren’t leaning forward when you come down, fitness expert Charlotte Campbell told Cosmopolitan UK, as that could put too much pressure on your spine. Instead, she said, “Puffing out your chest and keeping your shoulders in line will improve your form and prevent injury.” If you want more squat pointers and more Lawrence, check out her tutorial video on her YouTube channel.

Kettlebell split squats

“Kettlebell split squats are a great way to target your glutes, with a focus on powering through the glutes and hamstring on the front leg,” says founding MIRROR trainer Chris Ryan. “It’s safe on the knees since you power through the heel of the front foot, and also has an added benefit of loading the abs with the front rack position of the kettlebells.” Since you also need to use balance and coordination here, Ryan tells Elite Daily, this exercise is great for strengthening and toning your whole body.

To avoid putting pressure on your knees, make sure you’re trying to isolate your front leg as much as you can, he adds. Focusing on keeping your chest up and your knee positioned vertically above the heel will help you stay safe as well, Ryan explaisn.

“Good mornings”


If you want an exercise that works lots of muscles at once, look no further than this bad boy. “‘Good mornings’ with ‘press out’ is a great way to stretch and strengthen your whole posterior chain in one amazing movement,” Ryan explains. “It targets the glutes and hamstrings on the ‘good morning’ and the ‘press out’ portion works the back and shoulders.” Keep in mind, this is one exercise that doesn’t require you to load up on heavy weights, so even if you stick to a lighter bar (even just a PVC pipe might work), you’ll still feel it.

“Keep the feet just outside the hips with a soft knee (not locked), and push the hips back by powering through the glutes and hamstrings,” says Ryan. “When you come back up, engage the glutes and abs as strongly as possible.”

The first time I tried a banded side lateral walk, I was way too confident. All you have to do is shuffle a bit with a measly band on, right? TBH, this move is secretly deadly, IMO. “For the banded side lateral walk, use a band that offers a moderate resistance to take steps while keeping the feet outside of the hips,” Ryan explains, “and toes straight forward to fully engage the glutes and hips (if you turn your toes out, you will disengage the hips).”

For the full benefits of this exercise, keep your ears, shoulders, and hips aligned and your chest out throughout the movement, and stay in a 1/4-squat position, suggests Ryan.

One last thing: As you go through this workout routine, make sure you’re also having fun with the whole thing, just like Lawrence. If you need some inspiration, try wrapping up the session with a “7 Rings” dance workout that’s sure to leave you feeling like you’ve just left the club.

A model has shared an inspirational 10-year transformation photo on Instagram to highlight the importance of looking after yourself from the inside out.

Iskra Lawrence is a 27-year-old model who believes very strongly in the beauty of all shapes and sizes.

Lawrence struggled with body insecurities growing up, following restrictive diets when she was a young teenager in an effort to try to reduce her natural curves.

Sharing the full story, not just the headlines

Since struggling with eating disorders as a teenager, Lawrence has embarked on a journey of self-care and self-acceptance and is now helping others to do the same.

Yesterday, Lawrence shared a post on Instagram that showed two photos of her alongside one another.

The first was taken 10 years ago, while the second was taken only a month ago.

“I remember being proud of how skinny I look during this shoot,” Lawrence recalled in the caption.

“I used to seek approval from the fashion industry and tried to be ‘perfect’.

“I thought if I looked like ‘her’ (an unrealistic beauty ideal), I’d be happy, successful and loved.”

Lawrence explained how going down that path led her to failure and feelings of emptiness and unhappiness.

However, after years of focussing on her need for approval from others, she decided to embark on a journey of self-care, a message which she feels very strongly about promoting.

“I share my experiences with you all because if you are feeling like I did there is another way and those recovering from EDs you’re not alone,” she wrote.

“The best thing I ever did was focus on looking after myself and being the best me I could be.”

Lawrence has now created everyBODYwithiskra, an online health, lifestyle and fitness platform, to help others find health and happiness.


The model knows that, just like everyone else, she’s not perfect.

However, she wants to provide others with the support that she never had growing up.

“I don’t have all the answers and I’m not ever trying to change anyone or tell people to do this and that etc,” she wrote.

“But I felt the need to create this as I wish I could have had this when I was struggling and if I’m able to use that to help even one person even better.”

With almost four million followers on Instagram, a number of people felt inspired by Lawrence’s message of body positivity and acceptance.

“You are amazing. I know you don’t know me but I have also suffered from an ED and now just got out of it,” one user wrote.

“And you’re absolutely right, happiness comes with real joy for who you are, acceptance of the true you and to blossom by this.”
