With her heart-shaped face and feline eyes, Ms. Alexander, 31, only looks delicate. After landing an agent with a “G.I. Jane” monologue at a talent showcase, she parlayed a scrappy Texas childhood — founding her high school’s female wrestling team and roughhousing with four brothers — into action roles like the warrior Sif in the “Thor” movies.
Like Ms. Alexander, Jane is no damsel in distress. “Martin Gero created a female character that usually you see for a man, and he made her believable,” she said in a phone interview while moving into a Manhattan apartment. “He didn’t dumb up the girl.” These are excerpts from the conversation.
Q. Let’s start with the tattoos. Do you have to reapply them each time you shoot?
A. Every single day. In the summertime, they get sticky and pick up any bit of lint and dirt.
What’s the process?
They spray whatever area of my body is showing with medical glue. Then they lay a paper transfer on my skin, wet it and press down, and it sticks. Most of the time I’m covered in Monistat chafing gel. It makes the tattoos look vibrant, but it has a powdery finish so you don’t stick to anything.
How long does it take?
The basic tattoos on my arms and neck take up to an hour and a half. My arms and torso take four. And my full body is seven and a half, so it can get pretty intense. I can’t sit down because when you bend your body it pulls the skin, and the tattoos are like a puzzle, so if one piece is off, the whole body is off. The makeup artist and I get some good coffee and good music and we chat, because I’m naked, so it’s like nobody’s pointing out the elephant in the room.

Bourbon, ChapStick and Martial Arts: How Actress Jaimie Alexander Travels

Blindspot star Jaimie Alexander is known for her tough girl persona on TV, but admitted she’s a bundle of nerves when it comes to flying. “I’m a nervous flyer, but I’m also an adrenaline junkie so it’s a weird phobia I have,” Jaimie told Travel + Leisure at the Operation Smile’s 14th Annual Smile Gala in New York City on Thursday. “I will hang outside of a helicopter, but if you put me on a commercial flight I will freak out.”
Despite her fear, Alexander said she still loves to hit the road and revealed her travel tips on everything from beauty products to staying healthy on the go. Here’s what she had to say:
Her flight essentials include ChapStick, mist and Xanax
“I always have La Prairie sunscreen with me when I travel because it seems to be the only one that doesn’t make me breakout. Then I always have a good ChapStick and Le Mer mist. Depending on how far you’re flying, you’re skin just dries out. If you can get the travel size that’s allowed on the airplane, it’s so refreshing. Then there’s always the occasional Xanax depending on how long I have to fly.”
She drinks on the plane
“My stylist usually has to hold my hand or get me a bourbon to get through a flight.”
She does martial arts breathing
“I started doing Wang Chung and training in lots of different types of martial arts lately. There’s a techniques in breathing that have grounded me in more ways than one. When I was up in the air on the way to Cancun I got a little nervous at one point and I started doing the breathing we learned and it helped me. I thought it was such bollox and it worked.”
She has an on-the-go workout plan
“I try to eat as healthy as possible on the road when I can’t work out. When I do get the chance to workout I do a lot of prison workouts or martial arts. You don’t need heavy weights or bands or mat. You can just go into the park and do push ups, burpees, crunches, jumping jacks, just anything to get your blood pumping.”

Girly is a foreign concept to Jaimie. “I grew up with four brothers. I used to play sports with them. And I liked wearing their clothes. I’d run around in T-shirts, jeans, and baseball caps. Even my nickname, James, is a guy’s name. I didn’t understand how to be comfortable being feminine, painting my nails pink, and wearing girly dresses. No wonder I didn’t have a lot of female friends until I in was in my late twenties-I just didn’t know how to be around them.”
She eats like a dude. “I learned a lot from being around boys all the time. I’m not easily offended, and I have a certain toughness. I also eat really fast. If I didn’t, my brothers would take my food. When we were young, they would go, ‘Oh, there’s some chocolate left? Mine!’ It made me durable. I can take a lot.”
Skinny is so not her goal in life. “I pretty much eat all day to keep my strength up. I’m primarily a vegetarian who has an occasional side of fish. When I trained for the movie Thor , there were days when I was burning 4,000 calories and I had to slam lots of protein shakes. Now my day starts with a green shake called Garden of Plenty, which is packed with superfoods and grains. When I’m working, craft services makes me these amazing gluten-free wraps with lots of vegetables and ‘vegannaisse’ or hummus. I generally keep my diet pretty healthy, but if there’s pizza, I’ll eat it. And I will knock back a beer or some bourbon, too. I don’t deprive myself. And I hate being skinny. It’s not a good look for me. When I eat well and work out, I’m truly at my best.”
Her high school sport: wrestling. Yes, wrestling. “In competition, I only went up against females, but I trained with the guys because there weren’t enough girls on my school team. All the discipline and perseverance I have now comes from that sport. I get through all the intense physical training for Blindspot because of what I learned from wrestling.”
Her workouts are hardcore. “I do what’s called a prison workout-a lot of sprint-interval work and burpees-which I have a love-hate relationship with. My latest obsession is Valslides by Valerie Waters. You can use them anywhere, on hardwood floors or carpet. I do lunges, push-ups, pikes, and ab work with them. I also have a TRX band and a jump rope in my trailer. And I love swimming. It’s a great low-impact high-cardio workout. I never did it as a kid, but for Blindspot, I trained with a Navy SEAL.”
She learned to box with Chris Hemsworth… “I wasn’t very healthy in my twenties-I sat around and ate a lot of crap, and my weight peaked at 150 pounds. Then I got the part in Thor. I felt as if I had a whole new purpose in life. I was like, I can do this, but I was so out of shape. Chris and I started boxing to train for our roles, and I became the athlete I was in high school. I lost 20 pounds and packed on a ton of muscle.”

First TV Show
She portrayed Tammy in the American sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia in 2005. This was her debut role in television.
She does a variety of exercises. Jaimie has always been athletic during her school days, where she had run track and cross country. To maintain her body and do a challenging role as Sif in Thor: The Dark World, she replaced running with hot yoga. She finds this type of yoga really helpful as it is a nice way to get rid of harmful toxins. Yoga has done good things for her skin and taught her to breathe in hard times.
She needed to put proper efforts on her diet as well for Thor 2, especially the protein content. For that, she received tips from her co-star Chris Hemsworth.
She suggests her fans to take care of their bodies as this is a one time gift from God and we should not destroy it with too much alcohol intake and by starving ourselves.
Jaimie eats quinoa and brown rice. On top of that, she finds complex carbs with some proteins useful.

Jaimie Lauren Alexander (born Jaimie Lauren Tarbush; March 12, 1984) is an American actress. She is best known for portraying Jessi on the TV series Kyle XY (2006) and Sif in the 2011 superhero film Thor: The Dark World (2013), its 2013 sequel, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013) Since 2015, she stars in the NBC series Blindspot (2015).
Alexander was born in Greenville, South Carolina, and moved to Grapevine, Texas when she was four years old. She is the only girl in a family of five children. Alexander first got into acting in grade school, where she took theater for fun. Alexander stated that she was actually kicked out of theater when she was in high school because she could not sing, so she instead went into sports. When she was 17, she substituted for a friend at a meeting with a scouting agency and she met her manager, Randy James, who sent her some scripts. After her graduation from Colleyville Heritage High School, a year and a half later, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting.
Her career was launched in 2003, when she was cast in the leading role of Hanna Thompson in the low budget award-winning film The Other Side. According to the movie’s commentary, she was originally at the audition to help out by reading against the male actors, but the director Gregg Bishop decided to cast her in the leading role after hearing her perform the lines. Alexander’s next role was in the movie Squirrel Trap where she played Sara, the love interest of the main character, David, who is a socially introverted genius portrayed by Keith Staley. This was soon followed by a guest appearance in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, where she portrayed a femme fatale in the role of ‘Tammy’, who through a combination of seduction and threats manipulates one of the main characters. She also has a small part in an episode of Standoff.
She appeared in the series Watch Over Me where she portrayed the controversial character of ‘Caitlin Porter’. In 2006, she had her second lead role in the horror film Rest Stop where she portrayed ‘Nicole Carrow’, a girl who escapes from home and goes on a trip with her boyfriend, which is unexpectedly interrupted at a rest stop by a deranged serial killer. In 2007, she had her second lead role, also in a horror film. In Hallowed Ground she played ‘Elizabeth Chambers’, a girl stranded in a small town inhabited by a sect that plans to use her as a vessel for the rebirth of their founder. In both movies, her character is a strong character who fights back against her aggressors.
Her most famous role so far was that of ‘Jessi’ on the ABC Family television show Kyle XY. She portrays a troubled, show off girl with superhuman powers who is trying to find her way in the world, with increasing cooperation and eventual romance with her male counterpart Kyle. Her role generated a large fan base hoping to see a spin-off show for her character. She also has had guest roles on the show CSI: Miami where she played ‘Jenna York’, a flight attendant involved in a murder case; and in Bones where she played ‘Molly Briggs’, a student connected to the victim of the episode.
In September 2009, it was reported that Alexander would portray Sif in the live-action superhero film, Thor, directed by Kenneth Branagh and released in May 2011. She reprised the role in the sequel Thor: The Dark World, released in November 2013. She reprised the role twice in special crossover guest appearances on the TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on March 11, 2014 and again on March 10, 2015.
In July 2010, it was reported that Alexander had been cast in the independent comedy-drama film, Loosies co-starring Peter Facinelli and directed by Michael Corrente. In October 2010, it was reported that Alexander joined the cast of Nurse Jackie in a sizeable story arc as Jackie’s (Edie Falco) wild, immature sister-in-law, Tunie Peyton. In 2011, she joined the cast of Covert Affairs for three episodes of the second season.
Alexander appeared in the 2013 film Savannah directed by Annette Haywood-Carter, about Ward Allen (Jim Caviezel), a real-life early 1900s aristocrat who starts an unexpected partnership with Christmas Moultrie (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a freed slave. Also in 2013, she portrayed deputy sheriff Sarah Torrance in The Last Stand, alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger.
In 2015, Alexander began starring as ‘Jane Doe’ in the NBC series Blindspot.

In 2010, Alexander appeared in a web series for MSN entitled Ultradome produced by Milo Ventimiglia. In the series Alexander portrayed Han Solo in battle against Indiana Jones for the title of best Harrison Ford character.
In 2011, Alexander reunited with writer/director Gregg Bishop for The Birds of Anger for NBCUniversal G4Films. The film was based on the best-selling mobile game, Rovio’s Angry Birds, told in the style of the 1963 film The Birds by Alfred Hitchcock.
