A lifelong dancer, Jenna Dewan Tatum wasn’t stressed in the least about losing the 33 pounds she gained before giving birth to daughter Everly in May 2013. In fact, Channing Tatum’s actress wife of three years rarely gave it a second thought. “I didn’t think much about losing weight,” the 5-foot-3, size-0 Dewan Tatum — who was in her skinny jeans and back on the set of Lifetime’s Witches of East End six weeks after giving birth — tells Us Weekly. “I was overwhelmed and in love with my baby!”

A vegetarian since age 13, former backup dancer Dewan Tatum, 33, took a proactive approach to fitness during her pregnancy — a plan that paid off tenfold. “The second I found out I was pregnant, I called Jen Johnson,” she tells Us. “We found areas we wanted to target: arms and legs. I wanted to keep the muscles alive. Plus, I felt so much better. Working out kept me sane. I would feel a burst of energy and all my hormones would regulate.”

In addition to focusing on fitness, Dewan Tatum — who tells Us her pregnancy pounds “melted off slowly” — fine-tuned her diet for her sake, and Everly’s. “I think a lot of women find out they’re pregnant and are like, ‘Let’s go crazy and eat ice cream every day!’ To me, it was, ‘I’m growing a human being, and I want to give this little soul the best nutrition I can,” admits the star, who continues her healthy eating regimen post-pregnancy by nosing on oatmeal, green salads with chopped-up veggie burger and even enchiladas to sate her Mexican-food craving.

As Everly grows, Dewan Tatum is forced to fit in exercise when — and where — she can. One busy mom tip the actress swears by? Bedtime for baby is mommy’s me-time. “When I’m rocking Everly to sleep, I do lunges across the nursery, squats or calf raises,” says the star, who also manages to fit four 90-minute sweat sessions with Johnson into her weekly schedule. “Suddenly 45 minutes have gone by, she’s asleep and I got a little workout!”

Of course, it helps that little Everly is tuckered out thanks to playtime with her actor dad. “He’s like a big kid. He plays with her, and she laughs harder and smiles bigger than she does with anyone,” the proud mom gushes. “Dad comes around and it’s playtime. She’s like, ‘Mom, I’ll talk to you later!'”

Losing baby weight can be tough—but not quite as tough if you put on the right amount in the first place.

Jenna Dewan Tatum recently told Us Weekly that she lost her 33 pounds of baby weight in just seven weeks—thanks in large part to the healthy strategies she focused on while she still had a baby bump.

“I think a lot of women find out they’re pregnant and are like, ‘Let’s go crazy and eat ice cream every day!’” she said. “To me, it was, ‘I’m growing a human being, and I want to give this little soul the best nutrition I can.’”

Of course, Jenna also did plenty of dance cardio workouts, hiking, and strength training after giving birth to her daughter (and she’s also followed a mostly vegan diet). But she’s definitely onto something with the not-abandoning-healthy-habits-when-you-have-a-bun-in-the-oven thing.

According to one Obstetric Medicine study, more than half of women gain too much weight during pregnancy, which increases the risk of a host of health problems, such as gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, and preeclampsia. Meanwhile, children of women who gain too much pregnancy poundage are more than four times more likely to be overweight at age three than those whose moms gain the right amount, per Harvard Medical School research.

So what is the right amount? According to the Institute of Medicine’s current guidelines, women who are at a normal pre-pregnancy weight (that’s a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9) should gain between 25 and 35 pounds during pregnancy.

Since the Step Up star did give birth to 3-year-old daughter Everly with hubby Channing Tatum, we had to ask: How did she get the ridiculously toned bod that she has today?

“I breastfed for a very long time, which helped a lot,” Danskin’s newest ambassador told InStyle of dropping the pounds. While she went back to work quickly and didn’t have a ton of time to hit the gym, she did manage to get in daily workouts—by turning Everly’s bedtime routine into a workout itself!

“I used all of the minutes and hours that I would be rocking Evie to sleep, and I’d make it a workout. So I’d be doing lunges across the room or squats or whatever I was doing, because I was going to be doing it for 40 minutes regardless, so I might as well turn it into a little bit of a workout,” she said, revealing that the rocking motions lulled her daughter to sleep and toned her body in the process. “I think that it fully helped kind of snap things back in shape a little bit faster than they would have.”

Still, the new mom didn’t put pressure on herself to drop the weight. “I think women put so much pressure to lose the weight instead of focusing more on, ‘oh my god we just gave birth to a human being,’ which is actually insane and beautiful. Give it time, give it time. It will come off,” she told InStyle.

Three years after giving birth, the actress has never looked better. So how does she maintain her killer bod? There’s no one workout that she swears by, citing dance-based workouts, spin classes, and weight training as some of the many ways she exercises. “For me, it has to keep my interest so I’ve got to switch it up,” she said.

And yes, she does occasionally partake in a sweat session with her handsome hubby. “Chan really only likes to do Crossfit,” she said. “We are naturally very competitive so we have fun. Yeah, we have a good time. It’s just finding a good time to do it, really.”

As for her diet, the longtime vegetarian swears by playing up flavor and spice, rather than dousing dishes in salt. For breakfast, she opts for green smoothies or oatmeal. If you’re looking to try her exercise regime too, Jenna’s longtime-trainer told Shape that her workouts are mostly made up of dance moves, kickboxing and “we always end every workout with a ton of abs work”.

Watch one scene of Step Up, and you know that Jenna Dewan Tatum is a seriously talented dancer. So it’s no surprise that dance plays a huge role in her workout routine—she’s all about getting down to a beat, whether she’s doing straight-up dance cardio or challenging her muscles with resistance training.

Dewan Tatum squeezes it all into one sweaty workout with LA-based trainer Jennifer Johnson, creator of the JJ Dancer Method. “She’s a trainer who is also a dancer and she makes it fun for me,” Dewan Tatum told Health. “If it’s not fun, I won’t go. We dance, we do routines for 45 minutes to an hour, whatever time we have.”

The number of workouts she fits in each week fully depends on how much time she has. “It depends on the week, but if I get one or two workouts in, I’m happy,” Dewan Tatum told Health.

But with just a couple of 45-minute workouts a week, they don’t hold back. “Jenna is so, so busy, so we go hardcore for 45 minutes so we can get everything in,” Johnson tells SELF. This means squeezing in both cardio and strength training, which includes both compound movements that work multiple muscle groups at once (like squats and lunges) and isolation exercises that target smaller muscles. (Oh, and not very much time to rest.)

We asked Johnson for the details on what one of Dewan Tatum’s typical workouts might look like, and fair warning—you might get a little sweaty just reading about it.

They start their workout with dance cardio and some kickboxing.

“She’s a dancer, so you’d think that we’d do a ton of dance cardio,” says Johnson. But to make sure she gets in the strength training she needs, they do less “pure” dance cardio than you might think. “My method is usually half dance cardio, half muscle conditioning, but with Jenna it’s more like one-quarter dance cardio and three-quarters muscle conditioning,” says Johnson.

Here’s a snippet of one of their go-to moves—Johnson’s dubbed it “the Jenna squat.”

Then, they move onto about one song of kickboxing, incorporating moves like hitch kicks and punches—and some dance. “It’s like kickboxing with twerking in it,” she says.

Next, they break out a step routine to burn out her lower body.

“Then, we’ll pull out steps to get the booty and the legs activated, while I’m sneaking cardio in,” says Johnson.

“It’s OK for a relationship to change into a new form that is actually better for both people involved, and I think maybe that’s what shocked everyone so much—that it can be a positive thing.

“That was ultimately what happened with us.”
