It seems like Jenna Dewan has been in ridiculously good shape since practically forever, but she’s made it pretty clear on Instagram that she works hard for it. Now, she’s sharing her hotel workout routine and…it’s intense.

“Sometimes a quick on the go home/hotel workout is all I have time for…! “ she captioned a video of herself going through the movements in hyper-speed.

When she’s not traveling, Jenna recently told Women’s Health that she’s actually all about the weights, though. “I want to build muscle, so I can pick up my daughter,” she said. “Before, it used to be like, ‘I wanna get long, lean muscles.’ Now, I’m just like, ‘I wanna feel strong and good.’”

Jenna also told Women’s Health UK that she and JJ spend the first 15 minutes of class doing nonstop dance cardio to three or four hip-hop sons. “I follow Jennifer’s choreography, or dance in a squat position the whole time,” she said. After that, she usually does resistance band work with five-pound weights on her ankles, followed by squats and lunges on a box and abs work on core glider, followed by different kinds of planks.

Here’s what Jenna’s on-the-go routine involves…in normal speed:

Knees to the chest

How to: Start in a plank position. Lift your right foot off the ground, then bring your right knee in towards your chest or right elbow as you engage your abs. Bring it back to start. That’s one rep. Jenna does 25 of these.


How to: Stand with your feet hip-width apart. Push your hips back and bend your knees to lower into a squat. Push yourself back to start. That’s one rep. Do 20. (You can add a dumbbell or kettlebell for an extra challenge, if available.)

How to: Get into pushup position. Lower your body toward the floor and then push yourself back up to starting position. That’s one rep. Do 10.

Squat jumps

How to: Stand with your feet hip-width apart, toes forward, with your hands in front of your chest. Bend your knees, then explosively jump as high as you can. Land softly on the balls of your feet and immediately lower into your next squat. That’s one rep. Do 10.

And now we’re adding another one that definitely makes the top three.

Along with Julianne Hough, Jenna Dewan is a professional dancer on top of being an actress and model.

We’ve obviously seen women like Beyonce, Ariana Grande, J-Lo and more – who absolutely deserve to be named when dancing comes up; but Jenna Dewan and Julianne are on their own level.

On top of her dance moves (if you haven’t seen her impersonate Channing Tatum on Lip Sync Battle then you really need to), she’s also starred in tons of awesome roles like Step Up (obviously), Supergirl, The Resident, Witches of East End, and so much more.

And now it’s time to try to replicate those killer abs she shows off.

Jenna Dewan is officially one of the shortest women at SHJ.

Which is perfect because she joins her fellow dancer Julianne Hough at that range.

Normally the average height we see for women is around 5’4-5’6 with ladies such as Jennifer Aniston, Margot Robbie, Olivia Munn, Alicia Vikander, Sophia Bush, Tatiana Maslany, Evangeline Lilly, and a ton of others.

But then there is also that taller range, and among the tallest (even taller than the 5’7-5’8), are ladies like Gwendoline Christie, Gal Gadot, and a few others – with Phoebe Tonkin, Gabrielle Union, Brie Larson, Nina Dobrev, Daisy Ridley, and so many more coming in around that 5’7-5’8 range.

And, let’s not forget the shorter ladies of SHJ like Ariana Grande, Scarlett Johansson, Mila Kunis, Emilia Clarke, Lucy Hale, Julianne Hough and a good handful of others.

But, either way, don’t worry.

Jenna Dewan Diet and Nutrition

Jenna Dewan generally sticks to a plant-based diet.

She also chooses to eat healthy because of the way it makes her feel – but isn’t opposed to splurging from time to time – and even has her go-to cheat meals!

She told Health Mag this about her vegetarian lifestyle:

“I eat mostly vegan, but I’m very accommodating, maybe because I’ve lived with a man for 11 years who’s not vegetarian,”

And Insider shares some more information from Dewan about her diet here:

She hasn’t eaten meat since she watched a documentary about slaughterhouses when she was a pre-teen and told Women’s Health that “it just stuck. I feel good about morally and physically.”

She added, however, that she “went back and forth” for a brief period but ultimately decided that meat wasn’t for her. ” I stopped being a vegetarian, but it didn’t work for my body,” she explained in a video on her YouTube channel. “I felt sluggish and I didn’t feel as light and energetic.”

They even break down a full day’s worth of eating for Dewan:

For breakfast, she’ll start with a green smoothie— she likes Kimberly Snyder’s Glowing Green Smoothie— or she’ll make her own and beef it up with cod liver oil, black sesame seeds, coriander, parsley, or spirulina.

“I do green smoothies. I drink them every morning,” she explained in a video on her YouTube channel. “It’s great fiber, you get your veggies right off the bat. It’s great for picky eaters.”

Lunch is quinoa, hummus, and a tomato and cucumber salad dressed with olive oil, lemon juice, and salt and pepper. Alternatively, she might do a tabouli salad for lunch. “I’m part Lebanese … so I grew up with tabouli. It’s my favorite,” she told Women’s Health. She added that she’s a fan of meal-prepping: “I like to make things that will keep for a couple of days, and I can just grab and go.”

Dinner is a zesty quinoa bowl with taco-style toppings, though she told Women’s Health that she’ll order veggie sushi if she goes out to dinner.

People Mag agrees with this breakdown that Insider shared, sharing their own variation that is virtually the same, but also quoting Dewan on something I want to end off with for her dietary section:

“I consider eating healthy a way of life because I feel better, plain and simple,” she told PEOPLE last year. “I’m not a fan of dieting, which is why I choose to eat healthy most of the time. I keep it in balance, so I don’t have to crash diet. When I want to splurge I allow myself and don’t beat myself up — I just make a plan to eat extra healthy the next day or work out.”

When she decides to splurge, Dewan Tatum goes for “salty, savory food,” including her favorite: “French fries!”

Jenna Dewan Workout Routine Research

A lot of the focus in Dewan’s interviews about health and nutrition is on her vegetarian lifestyle.

But, in an interview with Shape, Dewan tells us everything there is to know about her workout routine.

They start by telling us this:

Dewan Tatum squeezes it all into one sweaty workout with LA-based trainer Jennifer Johnson, creator of the JJ Dancer Method (dance based bootcamp fitness classes). “She’s a trainer who is also a dancer and she makes it fun for me,” Dewan Tatum told Health. “If it’s not fun, I won’t go. We dance, we do routines for 45 minutes to an hour, whatever time we have.”

The number of workouts she fits in each week fully depends on how much time she has. “It depends on the week, but if I get one or two workouts in, I’m happy,” Dewan Tatum told Health.

And they continue this with a lot more:

But with just a couple of 45-minute workouts a week, they don’t hold back. “Jenna is so, so busy, so we go hardcore for 45 minutes so we can get everything in,” Johnson tells SELF. This means squeezing in both cardio and strength training, which includes both compound movements that work multiple muscle groups at once (like squats and lunges) and isolation exercises that target smaller muscles. (Oh, and not very much time to rest.)

And, they even asked Johnson for the details on what one of Dewan’s typical workouts might look like, and they say: “fair warning—you might get a little sweaty just reading about it.”

So let’s get into the breakdown:

  • She starts with dance-cardio and boxing
  • They move onto a step routine for lower body work
  • This is followed up with arms, butt, and core work in which they use resistance bands and yoga matts
  • They make sure to have fun and minimize rest time to maximize the work done in a short period of time

Here’s some more quotes from Johnson:

“She’s a dancer, so you’d think that we’d do a ton of dance cardio,” says Johnson. But to make sure she gets in the strength training she needs, they do less “pure” dance cardio than you might think. “My method is usually half dance cardio, half muscle conditioning, but with Jenna it’s more like one-quarter dance cardio and three-quarters muscle conditioning,” says Johnson.

For two to three songs, though, they break out the moves big-time to get her heart rate going and warm up her joints and muscles. “With dance, it’s not the same movement over and over, like running or ,” says Johnson. “You’re jumping, you’re squatting, you’re on the floor, you’re side-to-side, you’re spinning, you’re turning, and you constantly directions and intensity of movement,” she says. “And you’re having so much fun that it’s easier to get the cardio in.”

“Then, we’ll pull out steps to get the booty and the legs activated, while I’m sneaking cardio in,” says Johnson. (Johnson shares dance style squats on her personal Instagram)

And after reading some of their go-to movements, they definitely put in a ton of work!

Johnson makes sure to get in squats, donkey kicks w/ ankle weights, v-ups with sliding disks, tricep extensions, bicep curls, bent over rows, and more with her resistance bands; and all while keeping track of the songs in the background and making it feel like they’re still in their dance groove!

We’ll do our best to replicate it, but there’s a chance you’ll need to throw on a dance tape to follow for cardio, or replicate it with some other formats.

Dewan stays as active as she can on a daily basis and eats a very healthy diet. She’s also a dancer and does it for fun when she’s not training; but does try to get to the gym (classes) as often as she can. I’ll be writing you a 45 minute workout styled to replicate one of Dewan’s intense workouts with her trainer Johnson.

Jenna Dewan Workout: Dance Cardio and Full Body Burn

Warm Up:

The best warm up here is to get into it at a slow paced based on whichever form of cardio you’re going to be able to do. From the selections in the next part, take it nice and slow to start and work your way up to a quicker, more intense pace.

15-20 Minutes of Cardio:

For this section you can choose to dance. Dance is amazing and I believe that’s obviously what Dewan would choose.

Have some freestyle fun, throw on a YouTube video to follow along with, or just get moving with some of the other cardio options for the 15-20 minutes:

Now that you’ve got your blood flowing we can keep that music bumping, but begin to add in resistance bands, medicine balls, ankle weights, sliding disks, and more.

This one is going to be done in circuit format to keep the flow going, so don’t be scared to shake your hips a bit between the movements.

Try the Hotel Room Workout Jenna Dewan Does When She’s Short on Time!

Forget going to a fancy trainer — Jenna Dewan has a quick workout ready for you.

The actress and dancer, 37, shared one of her go-to workouts for when she’s short on time, and it’s easy to do anywhere.

“Sometimes a quick on the go home/hotel workout is all I have time for!” Dewan wrote on Instagram.

“25 knees to chest, 20 squats, 10 pushups, 10 squat jumps, 25 sit ups — repeat 5x.”

In the accompanying video, Dewan goes through the workout with ease — but she is in hyperlapse mode!

The mom to daughter Everly, 5, has always been a big fan of short, but efficient workouts.

“I love 45-minute power workouts,” she said in a 2016 interview. “I get in, do my thing, and then I’m able to go pick up Everly from school. It gives me energy.”

And Dewan works out to build up her strength — not to lose weight.

“I really like to feel strong, and I like to feel curvy. And when I say ‘curvy,’ I mean ‘muscular.’ In the gym, I add more weight rather than increasing my reps because I want to build muscle, so I can pick up my daughter,” she said in July. “Before, it used to be like, ‘I wanna get long, lean muscles.’ Now, I’m just like, ‘I wanna feel strong and good.’ ”

Dewan, who split from ex-husband Channing Tatum in April, announced Tuesday that she won’t return as the host of the competition show World of Dance. But she’s been racking up acting credits, and made her debut on an episode of the medical drama The Resident on Monday, where she’ll have a recurring role.

Jenna Dewan Tatum’s abs are on another level—we don’t know what to be more envious of, her washboard stomach or her hot husband. So when InStyle caught up with the Danskin ambassador this week, of course we had to ask: What is your secret?

According to the lifelong dancer, those sculpted abdominal muscles come from 25 years in the studio. And while we can’t turn back time and wish we’d stuck with dance class, we can steal the easy trick that she stayed true to to throughout her childhood: lots and lots of crunches.

“We would literally do two straight songs of crunches growing up. Before we did our dance class, she would put on two songs and we knew—two songs of crunches, here we go. So my muscles just kind of—you know, I trained them that way, to be honest. And then I do a lot of workouts. I do Pilates workouts. I eat very well. I eat very clean, and I enjoy healthy food. When I do splurge, I just workout the next day,” she told us.

“I’d like to say to my dance teacher as a teenager, thank you for torturing me and making me do 500 sit-ups a day, because maybe my muscles remembered a little bit.”

Of course, she can’t just rely on all that hard work done in the past. Dewan Tatum maintains her killer body by switching up her workouts, taking barre or Pilates one day and yoga the next. “There’s a hot yoga class in L.A. that—funny enough, it’s hip-hop music, so it kind of defeats the purpose of not thinking while doing yoga, but it’s fun and it makes me go. Anything that actually makes me sweat and go to the gym, I will do,” she told InStyle.

While having a killer bod is one part of the equation, confidence is also key. “Knowledge is power. I know what cuts and styles and colors look good on me, on my particular body type. That gives you a confidence when you know, just by trial and error, what kind of flattering shapes look good on you,” she said.

“I think if you’re having fun with it and you find a perspective that makes you playful and have a good time and even play a character, it makes it sparkly and fun, rather than it being a chore or a job that you have to do, which I know a lot of actors look at it like. For me, I enjoy doing different looks and I have fun with it.”

As seems sadly predictible in the world of celebrity, another couple bites the dust: This time former Women’s Health cover star Jenna Dewan Tatum and leading man Channing have announced their separation.

In a post issued on Instagram they mutually expressed their sadness and commitment to staying a family for their daughter Everly.

We’re taking a look back at our cover interview with one half of the dancing duo back in October 2017.

The first thing Jenna Dewan Tatum does is say sorry. She has a cold and hopes it won’t affect our interview.

It’s only a sniffle but still, she’d like to apologise in advance. And I almost feel sorry for her. Almost.

Until she tells me she caught it from plane-hopping over the last couple of days while travelling to a wedding with her husband, Channing Tatum. You know – World’s Sexiest Man Channing Tatum.

And it’s hardly like she’s the one scoring big in that dynamic. This is the woman who danced for Janet Jackson, who’s maintained a stellar acting career with TV shows such as Supergirl and Witches of East End and now has her own production company.

And, yes, who has a body that makes short shorts look easy to wear. Apologise all you want Mrs Dewan Tatum. You’re getting no sympathy from me.

But I will give her this – she gives good chat. She is funny, down to earth, quick to dispel any of the magic or myth that surrounds her.

Those abs during her Lip Sync Battle with Channing (google it if you haven’t seen it; she is outrageously good)?

‘They were painted on.’

For Magic Mike, they had this spray-tanner who was giving all the guys extra abs. I was like, “Um hi, can you come?” Now everyone thinks I have Janet Jackson abs.’

If she could choose any superpower? ‘Expert napper. Like those people who sit down on a plane and are snoring two seconds later.’

Her ideal night out? ‘Going out dancing and having a few tequila shots.’ And as for the 35-year-old mum-of-one’s attitude to fitness?

It’s surprisingly similar to that of a mere mortal.

There are certain days or weeks where I’m so busy with work it will be harder to get in a workout and other times I’d just prefer to be with my family,’ she says. ‘I have to make sure it’s something I want to do or I will make every excuse not to work out.’

For now, that means a combination of hiking with her dogs, spin classes and hot yoga and, if she needs to up the tempo, a dance-based session with Hollywood trainer Jennifer Johnson.

‘I try to work out a couple of days a week just because it’s good for my mind, body and soul – and that’s good for everyone in the house.

‘Exercise de-stresses me in a way that not a lot of things can so I try to make it a priority.’

Jenna has been vegan since she watched a documentary on slaughterhouses when she was 10.

‘The next day I said “I’m never eating meat again”. It just stuck. I feel good about it morally and physically.’ Though she confesses it was Channing who taught her how to cook – even if she couldn’t convince him to ditch the meat.

‘He really did try to be vegan for six months. The guy doesn’t like vegetables which makes it tough,’ she says. Jenna’s seemingly cut and dry tunnel vision that saw her go vegan is the same ‘go hard or go home’ attitude she took to her early career.

After a childhood of dancing, it was all she wanted to do.

‘I went to college but it was to please my dad,’ she says. ‘I was always going to be a dancer.’

By her 21st birthday, Jenna had already finished a tour with Janet Jackson and had no idea what to do next. She took a few acting classes, fell in love with it and won a few small television roles before landing the part of Nora opposite Channing’s bad boy Tyler in 2006’s Step Up.

Married in 2009, Jenna gave birth to the couple’s daughter Everly in 2013 in London while Channing was filming Jupiter Ascending. Although their careers have both been on the ascent since they met, family ground rules state no Hollywood talk when they get through the door at the end of the day.

‘We talk about each other, we talk about family, we talk about Evvie. We turn on the TV and tune out a little bit; we have a cuddle.

‘Our careers are absolutely not our number one priority. We’ve been together so long we’ve been through all kinds of different ebbs and flows of each other’s careers,’ she says. ‘But we have always agreed are not the most important thing and that if it all went away tomorrow, we would both be okay. What is important is our family, our spiritual life and our love life.’

And what of that love life? Parenthood can seriously dampen those more passionate of priorities.

‘Sure. It used to be all about us and now it’s not,’ says Jenna.

‘But we also have to make sure we get time for us. Because if we’re not together and not happy, then our child is feeling that too.’

Jenna is a woman genuinely in love with her family. Throughout our interview, she is always only a few words away from mentioning ‘Chan’ or ‘Evvie’. Days off revolve entirely around her daughter, taking her on play dates and indulging her obsession of picnics. ‘Every day we picnic,’ she laughs.

A daughter has made Jenna more sensitive to the world the little girl will grow up in, especially when it comes to body confidence.

‘I have always believed that if we raised the self-esteem of women, we would raise the self esteem of the entire world, but after having a daughter it’s so much more intense,’ says Jenna. ‘When people see her and say “Oh, how cute is she?”, I immediately remind her: “You’re smart, you’re strong, you’re healthy, and you’re capable.” Just to give her other adjectives to describe herself.

‘She’s always declaring how strong she is because we’ve said it so many times to her,’ laughs Jenna.

Channing is just as keen to build his daughter’s confidence up but Jenna stops just short of labelling her husband a feminist.

‘But I do know he has always been very pro women. And he is attracted to very strong, powerful, sexy women.’

Do they still get to go out and dance? Or is it just too much of a spectacle for the public to handle?

‘ everyone generally turns and looks at us,’ she admits. ‘It’s a bit like “Dance, monkeys, dance”. But this wedding we were at this weekend was nice. Everyone had to hand their phones in so there was no chance of anyone videoing us. We could just dance.’

Jenna Dewan and Channing Tatum shocked the world when they announced they were splitting up after almost nine years of marriage, but even though they broke our hearts, we still love both of them. You’re probably acutely aware of how handsome Channing is, but in my humble opinion, Jenna is by far the better looking half of this former couple. The two Step Up stars announced they “have lovingly chosen to separate” on April 2. “We fell deeply in love so many years ago and have had a magical journey together. Absolutely nothing has changed about how much we love one another, but love is a beautiful adventure that is taking us on different paths for now,” they said in their joint statement, before adding that there were no “salacious events” contributing to the decision and that they were still going to be “loving, dedicated parents” to their daughter Everly, who turns 5 in May.

After the shocking news, a report came out that claimed the breakup was at least partially “due to spending more time apart because of the pressure of work,” a source told Page Six. “Channing has been working non-stop, with four movies announced for 2018 alone. It is hard on a marriage to be apart so much, especially when you have a young child. Plus, Jenna is in pre-production for the movie Berlin I Love You.” The insider added that the exes are both still “devoted to their daughter and have worked hard to spend as much happy family time together.”

Jenna Dewan-Tatum’s Delicate Dance

When I agreed to take an exercise class on a Sunday morning in Los Angeles with Jenna Dewan-Tatum, I admit it was a momentary lapse in judgment. For those not familiar with her, Dewan-Tatum—wife of the millennial sex symbol, actor Channing Tatum—spent the years preceding her acting career as a professional backup dancer. She grew up in Grapevine, Texas before heading to the West Coast to attend the University of Southern California. It was there that she was discovered by a dance agent, catapulting her childhood passion into a successful career.

During her early 20’s, Dewan-Tatum toured with the likes Janet Jackson, *N Sync and Puff Daddy before eventually landed a breakout role in the 2006 romantic dance film Step Up, where she starred opposite her now-husband. The two married three years after meeting on set and had their first child, Everly, in May of 2013.

The information about her professional dancer pedigree had apparently escaped me when I consented to the class, and before I knew it I was strapping on cycling shoes at a West Hollywood spin studio. I barely recognized Dewan-Tatum when she settled into the seat next to me, her natural olive complexion unburdened by heavy on-screen makeup and the smoky eyes she sports at award shows. “I almost made us go to a dance class, but everybody I bring gets so nervous,” she says. Given her A-list status, her perfect post-baby body and the fact that she’s married to People’s 2012 Sexiest Man Alive, there’s something refreshingly real about her. “This spin class is just as hard as a dance class but it’s quicker,” she says. “With the baby, it’s all about how I can maximize my time.”

Now that they’ve entered the realm of parenthood, finding the balance between work and family is a difficult art that Dewan-Tatum is still trying to master. For the next few months, she’ll be living in Vancouver and spending 15-hour days on set for her starring role in the second season of Witches of East End, a supernatural drama series that premieres on Lifetime July 6. Dewan-Tatum says she and Channing rarely accept jobs that would put them in different cities at the same time “so we can be with each other as much as possible.” In Vancouver, he’ll play the role of stay-at-home dad. “We’re very gypsy-like and we’re always on the move, but we try to keep certain things a routine no matter where we are. What I’m learning is: that’s our life.”

For the celebrity couple, part of that routine includes fitting in exercise whenever they can. Occasionally they’ll do Cross Fit together, but, she says, “I have yet to get him to come to a spinning class with me. I’ve tried many times. He says there’s nothing more frustrating than sitting on a stationary bike and not going anywhere.” And the dance classes? “That’s not going to happen either.”

An instructor announces that class is about to begin and for the next hour, a numbingly loud hip-hop soundtrack fuels our sweat-soaked ride. If Dewan-Tatum struggled at all, she certainly didn’t let on. After class, in the studio’s courtyard—which is furnished with an only-in-LA display of cold eucalyptus towels and alkaline water—Dewan-Tatum pulls up her pant leg to reveal an inflamed red rash. “We’re going to the Movie Awards tonight, but I have to rethink my dress,” she says, promising it’s not contagious. “After this I’m heading to the dermatologist because my husband decided to go camping and bring back Poison Oak—the perks of living with a man who loves to be outdoors! We’re a family of Poison Oak at the moment. We’ll be really sexy on the red carpet tonight.”

Given the circumstances, Dewan-Tatum seems relatively unconcerned about the state of her legs—and the last minute wardrobe change. That’s probably because she shares her husband’s love of the outdoors. When they aren’t working, she and Channing often drive six hours outside of Los Angeles to go camping in Big Sur, where they’ll pitch a tent and dine on pre-packaged meals. “It gets you back to the basics, feeling connected to nature and grounded,” she says.

Staying grounded doesn’t seem to pose much of a challenge to the actress, who is completely candid about motherhood. “Kids are life-transformative, but they should fit in to your life. You don’t want to feel resentful for forgetting about a whole part of yourself. It’s tough learning how to balance and multitask; it’s a lot of balls to juggle. That’s been the biggest learning curve of this year for sure.”

At the moment, she and Channing are focused on getting to know their “sassy and opinionated” one-year-old, and they haven’t started planning for a second just yet. “I think it would be really hard to have more responsibility—it takes a while to adjust to ,” she says. “You’re running around non-stop because your ‘me time’ is completely gone, but it’s also the most fulfilling thing in the entire world.”

That evening at the MTV Movie Awards, Dewan-Tatum wore a black Pamella Roland ensemble that was half mesh, half lambskin. It had long-sleeves and hit just below the knee, and it was stunning.
