Rachel Green? More like Rachel Evergreen, as Jennifer Aniston has kept her skin nearly as youthful as the day she appeared on our screens as her character in Friends. If you ask most women who’d they like to age like the most, tenner bets the answer is Jennifer Aniston.
She has, as they say, “aged gracefully” and it’s possible this is down to her more holistic approach to taking care of her skin. At The Skin Nerd, we cannot talk enough about how your lifestyle, diet and environment affect your skin. And even if you are reluctant to do a complete overhaul of how you live for the sake of your skin, you have to admit the results speak for themselves.
The most well-rounded, yet perhaps not accessible for all, skincare routine will include looking after your diet to a T, exercising your facial muscles, results-driven skincare, avoiding and protecting yourself from external damage, reducing stress, working out, getting enough sleep and professional guidance. Honestly, anyone would be tired after reading it but it’s the only surefire way to have skin like Jennifer’s.
In terms of diet, Aniston opts for a clean diet sans the obsession that often comes with it, prioritising getting in nutrients over keeping out “baddies”. She admits that although she tries to be dairy-free and gluten-free, she will sneak in a bit of cheese or Mexican food the odd time, and who doesn’t like the sound of that? All in all, from my research, she opts for veggies, salads, healthy carbs and protein, day in, day out.
Protein is more important than you may think when it comes to skin, because it is the building block that helps to actually make our skin. Its very own proteins, collagen and elastin, are what keep our skin plump and give it structure. Jennifer seems to get as much protein in as possible, even adding an egg white to her porridge. I may suggest skipping that particular piece of advice.

In a recent interview with Toska Husted, owner of Toska European Spa, the renowned esthetician dished some secrets on how the 50-year-old beauty achieves such an ageless look.

Jennifer Aniston recently turned 50 years old, but if you think the actress has any plans of slowing down, you better think again.
She’s acting more than ever, with upcoming projects including the movie First Ladies and an Apple TV+ series called The Morning Show. And, she’s showing us time and time again that age is nothing but a number, like when she recently stripped down for her June/July Harper’s Bazaar cover shoot.
“It felt completely normal,” she said to comedian Tig Notaro in an interview about going topless. “I think our bodies are beautiful, and I think celebrating them and being comfortable in them — no matter what age you are — is important. There shouldn’t be any kind of shame or discomfort around it.”
Jennifer’s workflow and confidence no doubt come from how diligent she is about fueling her body with exactly what it needs. Here’s a glimpse at what Jen eats every single day:
“When I wake up, I have warm lemon water and then I have a shake or avocado and eggs, which is one of my favorites,” she told Elle in 2016.
Her go-to smoothie recipe includes “some sort of pure protein, then bananas, blueberries, frozen cherries, stevia, a vegetable mix of dynamic greens that goes in there, maca powder, and a little cacao,” she revealed to Well+Good.
Other times, she’ll pair a bowl of puffed millet cereal with a banana or make oatmeal with an egg white whipped in at the end. Adding in an egg white — a tip she picked up from her ex-husband Justin Theroux — sneaks in extra protein and “gives it this fluffy texture that’s delicious,” she told Elle.
For her midday meal, Jen reaches for “some form of vegetables or salad with protein,” according to Elle. She’ll also have a chicken burger wrapped in protein, she revealed in a 2016 Harper’s Bazaar interview.
As for snacks, Jen will combine some healthy carbs and protein, like an apple with almond butter or some nuts. She also keeps cut raw vegetables and hard-boiled eggs in her fridge as staples, she told Yahoo Food.
Her overall approach is actually pretty simple, when it comes down to it. “I don’t let eating habits get out of control where I need a reset button,” she said. “It’s pretty clear: Eat as much organic fruits and veggies as you can, keep sugar low, drink tons and tons of water, and get good sleep. I allow myself to indulge once in a while … but I don’t give myself any rules anymore.”
Dinner at Jen’s house usually involves another combo of vegetables with protein, but she’ll also enjoy her favorites once in awhile. She has a built-in pizza oven and glass-encased wine room at her house, for goodness’s sake. When she’s entertaining, she’ll invite everyone make their own pizzas or whip up a vegetable lasagna with zucchini, eggplant, and different cheeses, Jen said to Yahoo Food.
Her other obsession: Mexican food. Her go-to margarita recipe includes silver tequila with lime juice shaken and over rocks. “No sugar, no mixes, no agave,” she told InStyle. “I don’t like sweet drinks.”
She’s not a purist when it comes to guacamole, though. The Murder Mystery star recently played sous chef to Ayesha Curry for a cooking segment on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, adding fresh garlic, red onion, and Havarti cheese into their guac at the direction of the cookbook author.
“Such a smart move,” she said. “We should all be married to you.”

Sounds pretty meh to me—and nothing at all like a cheat meal—but, hey, to each their own.

She told Yahoo Food she doesn’t have to change her diet much when awards season comes around and she’s looking to tone up a bit because she already eats healthy—and how much cleaner can one get? This eating regimen seems pretty intense to me, and I thought I’d reach out to our Cooking Light and EatingWell Nutrition Editor, Lisa Valente, MS, RD, to get her expert opinion on Jennifer Aniston’s diet. Here’s what she thought:
“I love that she doesn’t need to do strict cleanses or resets because she sticks to an overall healthy diet all the time,” Valente says. “However, she probably could loosen up a little bit. I don’t know how realistic it is for us normal people to stick to such a strict regimen, but she’s definitely getting her vegetables in—something we all could stand to eat more of.”
Valente says she would love to see some more complex carbs—the “good” ones—in her diet, like whole grains, starchy veggies like sweet potatoes, and more fruit. She says simply adding berries to her oat-egg white concoction or rounding out her salad with some quinoa or another wholesome grain would help her get more nutrition and variety in her diet. Valente believes the aim of a healthy diet is to eat mostly whole foods with a few treats mixed in to stay sustainable.
“Eating a well-balanced diet should be more about feeling good, rather than looking a certain way or like a certain celebrity,” Valente says. “What works for Jen, may not work for you and that’s OK.”

“I noticed a big difference in going without solid food for 16 hours,” she explained.
While this may sound like simply another fad diet, Aniston (and the many other celebrities and fitness gurus who follow suit) have science on their side. The Harvard Health Blog explains that more and more studies are stacking up to show the benefits of intermittent fasting. The trend can help with weight loss, but it can also boost metabolism in people generally.
Dr. Monique Tello writes that the fasting can be particularly useful at preventing diseases like diabetes: “There is some good scientific evidence suggesting that circadian rhythm fasting, when combined with a healthy diet and lifestyle, can be a particularly effective approach to weight loss, especially for people at risk for diabetes.”

While some celebrities boast mind-boggling workout routines that would never translate to most regular people’s lives, Aniston’s workout regimen is surprisingly common sense. She focuses on a reasonable 45 minutes of cardio intervals (she prefers the elliptical) and gets a wide variety of weight and resistance training.
She likes to mix up her activities to prevent boredom, and she makes sure to travel with a pair of 8-pound weights so that she can squeeze a workout in on the road.

Think “celebrity diet” and your mind usually goes to absurd extremes — like Mariah Carey’s claim she eats only salmon and capers, or whatever fad Gwyneth Paltrow is on board with.
So when a reader asked Coach to investigate how Jennifer Aniston eats and works out, it wasn’t a surprise (a poll last year determined she has the most admired celebrity body) — but it was grounds for deep scepticism.
But there’s good news: It turns out the 48-year-old’s health regimen is … actually very down-to-earth and accessible, and involves the kinds of habits pretty much anyone could adopt even if they’re not a rich Hollywood star.
Yes, this came as a great shock to us too.
Jennifer Aniston’s diet
A typical day starts with a standard cup of hot water with a slice of lemon in it. Aniston’s breakfast options lean to healthy — but normal-healthy, not crazy-healthy. Think toast and poached eggs with avocado (and maybe “a little coconut oil”); or millet cereal with almond milk and bananas; or a shake.
She told Well+Good her go-to smoothie recipe is “some sort of pure protein , then bananas, blueberries, frozen cherries, stevia, a vegetable mix of dynamic greens that goes in there, maca powder, and a little cacao.”
Another unusual breakfast option is oatmeal with an egg white whipped in at the end — a “little move” her husband Justin Theroux taught her to get extra protein, she told Elle. “It kind of gives it this fluffy texture that’s delicious,” she explained.
Lunch and dinner is usually vegetables or salad with some kind of protein (such as chicken wrapped in lettuce into a sort of burger), while for snacks she enjoys frozen grapes (“they’re really easy and delicious,” she told Women’s Health) or an apple with almond butter or a side of nuts.
Aniston avoids sugar but enjoys coffee and margaritas, she told Harper’s Bazaar. According to Elle, her other favourites include Mexican and pasta: “Pasta has taken over as my new favourite go-to-town food,” she said, crediting Theroux with converting her back to carbs (which, despite what you may have heard, aren’t the enemy of weight loss).
Her best, most sensible diet advice came via an interview the Huffington Post:
“I eat really well and I work out, but I also indulge when I want to. I don’t starve myself in an extremist way,” she said. “You’re not taking away my coffee or my dairy or my glass of wine because I’d be devastated. My advice: just stop eating shit every day.”
Yes, yes, a million times yes.
Jennifer Aniston’s workout

Aniston doesn’t appear to have a health guru who leads her through some esoteric workout routine off-limits to us mere mortals — she does things you could do at any gym, including spin classes or cardio sessions with her trainer.
The actress keeps interesting by switching up the cardio machines she uses (alternating between the bike, the treadmill and the elliptical) and doing intervals, that is, switching between low and vigorous intensities.
“It’s monotonous to do one pace,” she told Well+Good. “It’s good to pump it up and then take it down.”
She’s an advocate in keeping her exercise sessions fresh instead of doing the same thing every time: “I have a lot of favorite workouts. Variety is the key for me,” she told Women’s Health.
That variety includes strength-training in the gym using her own body weight, an hour here or there using the Bar Method, and she’s also a fan of the Body by Simone programs devised by dancer Simone De La Rue. “It’s so freakin’ hard, it’s unbelievable,” Aniston told Harper’s.
It’s easy to assume Aniston does literally nothing but sleep, act and work out, but she told People that rumours she works out twice a day aren’t true — she usually exercises five days a week, and takes Sundays off.
Like anyone, she’s not always motivated to exercise. On those days, she tricks herself into working out out by making a deal that she only has to do it for 10 minutes — typically enough time for endorphins to kick in and spur her to keep moving. “So sometimes you can actually override the ‘I don’t want to work out’,” she told Women’s Health.
How Jennifer Aniston stays balanced
Yoga has been an Aniston fixture for more than 10 years, and she also likes to meditate first thing in the day — practicising transcendental meditation that involves chanting a mantra. “Usually 20 minutes, or 10 if I can’t get the full amount of time in,” she told Well+Good.
In an interview with Elle, Aniston lamented that so many people are “water lazy”: she believes hydration is vital for wellbeing, and drinks at least two litres a day. (The actress is a spokesperson for Smartwater — which is essentially just filtered, bottled water with some electrolytes sprinkled in.)
She told Women’s Health that while she goes through bouts of being a “crazy workout girl”, she believes it’s important to take a break: “I kind of stay with more simple stuff and taking walks and not being neurotic about working out and eating right,” she said. “I started to enjoy life a little bit more.”

She shakes up her cardio routine.
If the mere thought of cardio makes you cringe, you shouldn’t force yourself to an hour on the treadmill. While cardio can keep your heart healthy, you should also experiment with different forms to keep your spirits high. After all, what’s a workout without the endorphin rush? Whatever you do, make sure you aim to constantly move throughout the day. “I work out almost every day,” Aniston told InStyle magazine in their March 2012 issue. “I do 40 minutes of cardio: Spinning, running, the elliptical, or a combination of all three.”
She does HIIT workouts, too.
HIIT, or high-intensity interval training, has been shown to increase weight loss without increasing your time spent at the gym, and Aniston has totally adopted the trend. “I still love yoga and cardio, but these days it’s been interval training. I think muscle confusion and switching it up is important,” she told SHAPE. “I work out at Rise Nation and with my trainer Jason who just has me carrying really heavy ropes around and throwing medicine balls against walls and stuff. I’d never really done anything like that before, but I love it.” In addition to keeping her body challenged with a boot camp-like training routine, Aniston also enjoys Pilates and resistance circuits.
She doesn’t let travel derail her workout.
Don’t let all-day beachside hangouts and the resort’s all-inclusive swim-up bar deter you from sticking to your slim-down plan. Consistency is key when it comes to weight loss, which means that vacations pose no excuse to leave your running sneakers at home. Aniston revealed to InStyle, “I take 8-pound weights with me whenever I’m staying in a hotel.” Can’t find the time to fit in a workout between sightseeing and booking excursions? Aniston suggests doing arm exercises using dumbbells when watching TV.
She indulges…in moderation.
“I also indulge when I want to,” Aniston has said, as reported by Women’s Health. “I don’t starve myself in an extremist way. My advice: Just stop eating junk every day!” Instead of loading up on snickerdoodle cookies and chocolate-coated candies, try reaching for better-for-you swaps such as a square or two of 70-percent dark chocolate or strawberries dipped into our #1 best peanut butter.
Aniston also told Bon Appétit that she feels powerless around “tortilla chips. Homemade, really good, fluffy-crispy tortilla chips.” She is not afraid to splurge on carb-heavy Mexican food every once, and a while and neither should you!
She drinks lemon water in the morning.
Instead of immediately heading to the pantry for a bag of granola, Aniston revs her metabolism with a soothing drink: warm lemon water.
“Usually when I wake up, I’ll make my standard cup of hot water with a slice of lemon in there,” she told Well+Good.
One study including middle-aged and older adults found that those who drank 500 milliliters (about 2 cups) of water 30 minutes before each meal for 12 weeks lost 44 percent more weight than those who didn’t drink water prior to a meal.
In addition, there are specific compounds in lemon have been found to demonstrate both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities in the body. One is even believed to treat chronic ailments such as obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and even hypertension.
Aniston sets herself up for maximum calorie burn by adding lemon into her water before breakfast.
She makes protein-rich shakes for breakfast.
When it is time for breakfast, Aniston says she usually wakes up to a protein-rich shake.
“I make a quick shake with protein powder, spinach, maca powder, berries, and vitamin C powder I put in there that’s pretty good. I’m not a big breakfast person, but I made myself become a breakfast person,” she told SHAPE.
Aniston also revealed another one of her go-to morning shakes with Well+Good.
“Usually I’ll have a shake, with some sort of pure protein, then bananas, blueberries, frozen cherries, stevia, a vegetable mix of dynamic greens that goes in there, maca powder, and a little cacao,” she said.

She follows The Zone Diet.
The Zone Diet was created by biochemist Dr. Barry Sears as a way for people to reduce inflammation in the body through diet alone. Essentially the diet calls for careful monitoring of which kinds of foods you pile onto your plate. It restricts grains and starches, and instead requires an increase in fruits and vegetables. Your plate should comprise 1/3 lean protein, 2/3 carbs, and a dash of healthy fat. In a day, you should strive to get a relatively equal split of the macronutrients: 30 percent protein, 40 percent carbs, and 30 percent fat. On this diet, women only get about 1,200 calories a day and men get roughly 1,500. Aniston, as well as other fit celebs including Sarah Jessica Parker and Sandra Bullock, have all reportedly tried the diet and were pleased with the results.

She makes her margaritas skinny.
Aniston recently revealed her low-sugar margarita recipe to InStyle.
“It’s basically silver tequila with lime juice shaken and over rocks. And some people like a little Cointreau, some don’t. It’s a cleaner margarita. No sugar, no mixes, no agave. I don’t like sweet drinks,” she said.
Just imagine how many calories and carbs you would save by making this margarita instead of ordering a sugar-laden restaurant cocktail?
She drinks a lot of water.
According to SHAPE, the former Friends star drinks 100 ounces of Smartwater every single day. Jennifer Lopez, who is about the same age as Aniston and also in incredible shape, has also said she herself drinks a lot of water. Water is pivotal for proper digestion, which can ultimately prevent you from becoming bloated.
She kicked fad diets to the curb.
It’s no news that fad diets are not a sustainable way to keep weight off. In 2016, when Aniston was asked by Yahoo Food if she had any former stints with fad diets, she said: “Sure, the Grapefruit Diet. I think there was a watermelon one, and if you just think about it for two seconds, if anyone just lives on watermelon, you’re going to lose weight,” she said, “I did do Nutri-System, like, 20 years ago, that actually worked. It just happens to be astronaut food, but it still worked.”
At 50, the actress no longer gives herself rules anymore and, instead, eats wholesome foods and exercises regularly.

Intermittent fasting and hard work: a look into Jennifer Aniston’s approachable health routine
It’s 6:40am, and I – the epitome of a night owl – force my heavy body out of bed. I’ve had six hours of sleep, and I feel like a shell of a human. But I need to be at the gym in 20 minutes, so up I get.
Wondering why this grumpy woman is forcing herself to go to the gym when she’d really prefer to doze off again and dream of John Krasinski?
No, it’s not because of some cliché like “beauty is pain,” or “you only get out what you put in”. It’s because for a week, I’ve been following Jennifer Aniston’s health routine and, perhaps unsurprisingly, that commitment demands a lot of gym time.
The 50-year-old actress who brought our beloved Rachel Green to life has always been in incredible shape. And over the years, she has somehow managed to avoid ageing. To your average person (i.e. me), it’s truly baffling.

As we regular folk tend to do, I’ve often wondered just how much work goes into looking like Ms Aniston. Does a body and face like that require a liquid diet, two-a-days, and a small sacrifice to some supernatural being?
Well, no. But becoming Jennifer Aniston is no easy feat, friends (lol, Friends).
Trawling through a pile of interviews led me to discover that there are four key rules that Jen sticks to:
1. Eat “clean” six days a week: She follows a diet that’s packed with fruit and veg, and is low in sugar. Her plates are usually high in protein and gluten-free. Oh, and she drinks *lots* of water, too.
2. Fast for 16 hours a day: Jen has become quite the fan of

meaning she starts her morning with liquids, only.
3. Work out for about an hour – you guessed it – six days a week: Her schedule includes a mixture of cardio, yoga and weight training.
4. Take a cheat day! One day a week, she skips the gym and indulges in treats like margaritas and tacos, or a bowl of carbonara.
Now, I’ve never exercised six times a week in my life. Still, irrespective of that factor, I thought her routine sounded reasonably simple. So, I tested it out for a week, and this is what I discovered:
Jennifer Aniston’s diet is pretty manageable
Aniston follows a pretty sensible eating plan.
Apparently, she usually chooses oats, or eggs with avocado for breakfast, follows that with a salad and protein for lunch, and protein with veggies for dinner. While she generally eats gluten-free, she does include some carbs in her diet. Sugar is the thing she aims to avoid most.
Sure, there were times where I wanted to eat chocolate. But overall, I felt satisfied with this style of eating. And I wasn’t too concerned about “missing out” on certain foods, because I knew I had a cheat day under my belt. You better believe I took full advantage of that gift.
Getting into the habit of intermittent fasting didn’t take too long, either. Some days I woke up a little hungry, but I usually felt okay after a glass of water or my morning coffee.

I definitely don’t drink enough water
In an interview with Shape, Aniston revealed she drinks at least 100 ounces of Smartwater per day. That roughly converts to three litres.
I maybe drink a litre a day. Yes, I know that’s not enough.
Upping my water intake to Aniston-level was difficult. I really needed to push myself to chug that amount of h20. I also went to the bathroom like 65 times a day as a result (possible exaggeration).
I should point out that I skipped the Smartwater and stuck to tap because I’m not a millionaire who can spend $50 on water in a week.
Getting a bod like that takes work
I consider myself a fairly active person. I work out about three times a week, sometimes four. I even see a personal trainer.
But to match Aniston’s fitness program, I needed to double what I was doing. It was a journey.
After my fourth workout, I was feeling pretty good so became pre-emptively cocky that I could smash out six sessions without issue.
Then my legs almost gave out from beneath me during a yoga class…
I completed three workouts with my trainer (weights and bodyweight exercises), one yoga class and two cardio sessions – all between 45 minutes to an hour. The sixth workout was like reaching the summit of an exercise mountain.
Sitting here at the end of my week as Jennifer Aniston, I can tell you my body is exhausted. But I feel a certain level of pride about having worked it so hard. My mood has lifted. People have complimented me on my skin. I’m even feeling more confident (and it’s only been a week, so not much has changed, physically).
The biggest takeaway I’m leaving with, however, is the knowledge that the secret to Jennifer Aniston’s figure is hard work. There are no dangerous trends; no cayenne pepper detoxes. Just balance and, as experience has shown me, probably some really sore glutes.
Our obsession with wanting to know how our favourite celebrities stay in shape, down to their favourite exercise and the snacks they eat, is something that’s never wavered, despite us almost never following the strict diet and workout regimes they reveal (and then wondering why we don’t look like them anyway).
One such person is Jennifer Aniston, who looks as good – if not better – now aged 50 than she did 30 years ago. But how does one look like Jen? Thankfully, the actress and newly crowned queen of Instagram’s personal trainer Leyon Azubuike, co-owner of Santa Monica-based gym Gloveworx, has just revealed all.
Azubuike told Women’s Health that Jen works out up to seven days a week for an hour and a half each session, depending on where they are in her training cycle.
The pair follow a training technique called ‘periodisation’, which allows Azubuike to adjust things based on Jen’s busy schedule. “Depending on where we are in that cycle dictates the duration and intensity of Jen’s workout,” he explains. “If I know Jen isn’t filming anything, it’s a different phase than if I know she has something coming up tomorrow. If she’s going to be walking up to receive an award, I’m not going to destroy her legs in the gym the day before.”

In the biography, which celebrates the 25th anniversary of the popular US sitcom, author Saul Austerlitz revealed the tough sacrifices Jennifer, who was told that she was “too fat” for many roles on offer, had to make to beat other hopefuls in LA.
In his new book, Generation Friends: An Inside Look at the Show That Defined a Television Era, Saul wrote: “She had to lose thirty pounds if she wanted to stay in Hollywood. Los Angeles was a tough place to be an actress – it was a tough place to be a woman – and Jennifer Aniston’s agent was reluctantly levelling with her.” Saul continued: “Aniston was hardly fat – everyone could see she was beautiful – but as the show she would one day become indelibly associated with later made a point of noting, the camera added ten pounds.”

She said: “I was like, ‘What?!’ But my diet was terrible. Milkshakes and French fries with gravy. It was a good thing to start paying attention.”

It’s an especially good day to be Jennifer Aniston. The Friends star was just crowned 2016’s World’s Most Beautiful Woman by People, and she looks stunning on the cover of the mag’s special issue. Recently, the star’s shared how she keeps her skin looking flawless and her healthy diet. But we haven’t had a glimpse into her workout routine—until now.
In her People cover story, Aniston reveals that she’s not always excited about a sweat session.
Her typical fitness week sounds pretty well-balanced: She goes to a spin-yoga class—which is 30 minutes of spinning and 30 minutes of yoga—three times a week. Then, she does weight training at home another three days a week. Sometimes, she’ll spice it up by doing cardio at home, too. She calls her home cardio session a “trifecta.”
“I usually do a trifecta. Fifteen minutes on the bike, 15 on the treadmill running and then 15 on the elliptical. You have to shake it up, you know, muscle confusion.”
Contrary to rumors that she works out twice a day, she says she hits the gym once daily for around an hour. She usually takes Sundays off, too. A girl after our own heart! And, her motivation on days when working out seems like the worst is pretty incredible.
“Bite the bullet. Just bite the bullet and do it. Think of a wonderful pasta or Mexican meal that you want to have on the weekend and dangle that in front of you like a little carrot.”
