Kate Upton Says Her Unretouched Health Magazine Cover ‘Is a Step Toward Embracing Real Life’
Kate Upton is celebrating her body just the way that it is on the cover of Health Magazine. The three-time Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover model sent the ultimate body-positive message by posing unretouched for the magazine’s September issue, and we’re totally in awe of her natural beauty–both inside and out.
“When you think about it, we have retouching everywhere now—and we don’t even know it,” Kate told the magazine. “People are staging Instagram shots and retouching those pictures. That’s the new norm. And then we believe that’s how people actually look, and think we should look that way too. So, for me, doing an unretouched shoot is a step toward embracing real life. The goal should be to be the best you can be—not try to look like someone else.”
We couldn’t agree more.
It’s safe to say our girl Kate knows a thing or two about the pressure to look perfect, especially after giving birth to her first child last year. But she’s ready to shut down weight loss culture once and for all.
“I don’t want anyone to have to be in that negative space where they think, “Oh, no! I don’t fit into that size 2 dress,” she said. “You know what, who cares? Buy another one!”
For Kate, it’s all about feeling strong, rather than the number on the scale. Her fitness program Strong4Me, created with the help of her trainer Ben Bruno, focuses on just that.
“Instead of beating yourself up about the number on the scale, you notice when you get stronger,” Kate told Health. “It’s a healthier mind-set, one that took me a while to get to. That’s really what I wanted to share with others.”
And Kate is already making a difference. Just last week, she encouraged women to take to social media to open up about what gives them strength using the hashtag #ShareStrong. The response was inspiring to say the least!

Kate Upton is used to appearing on magazine covers, but her latest shoot for Health magazine is special. Unlike other professional photo shoots, the supermodel opted to have none of her photos retouched.
Upton, 27, appears on the latest cover of the glossy wearing denim shorts and a breezy, midriff-baring white top nine months after giving birth to her daughter, Genevieve. The baby’s father is Justin Verlander, a professional baseball player with the Houston Astros whom Upton married in 2017.

While Upton looks as stunning as ever, she said she wanted to send a message about how the seemingly perfect photos of celebrities are very often retouched.

“We live in this world where we are surrounded by retouching, to the point that it has become normal to us. It’s our new norm. And then we start comparing ourselves to other peoples’ retouched selves,” she said during an interview with TODAY.
“For me, this Health cover is a step forward in remembering this is real life and let’s not compare ourselves with all of this retouching,” Upton continued. “Let’s embrace and empower our real self.”

Upton, who rose to fame on cover of Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit issue in 2012, said she especially wants to share a message with other new moms: Stop comparing yourself to others.
It’s also the reason why she said she created a workout program called Strong4Me, alongside her trainer Ben Bruno. The fitness plan can be tailored to meet anyone at their level.

Kate Upton is getting a lot of attention for nabbing her third cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition. Actually, if you want to get technical about it, the model, 24, shows off three different looks on three separate covers. But while Upton has been here before (she appeared on the magazine’s cover in 2012 and again in 2013), she says she feels different this time.
“This year, I had a completely different mind-set about my body, and instead of always trying to fit in a certain sample size, I wanted to be strong and healthy,” she says in a video on People.com. “Changing my workout and focusing on weight training helped me do that. It helped me think about my body as a machine and less of something people can judge me on.”
She also shared this body-positive sentiment: “It’s OK not to love yourself every second of every day. Appreciate what your body can do.”

It’s really no surprise that getting strong is part of what helped Upton flip that switch from focusing on what her body looked like to focusing on what it can do—the model is a known fan of strength training. In November, her trainer Ben Bruno revealed that Upton is big on lifting and moving really heavy things, and it’s a big part of how she stays fit.
According to Bruno, Upton can deadlift more than 200 pounds, do sled pushes with 500 pounds, and do bear crawls (where you walk around on all fours like a bear) with 300 pounds—and she regularly uploads Instagram posts of herself working out that show just how strong she really is:
Jim Pivarnik, Ph.D., a professor of kinesiology at Michigan State University, tells SELF that Upton’s focus on weight training can be a smart one, noting that the main purpose of weight training for most people is to overload specific and small muscle groups so that they get stronger. Known as progressive overload, this process encourages people to increase weights, sets, and reps as they get stronger. Many times, this can make muscles grow in a way that makes one look fitter, Pivarnik says.
Type “Kate Upton” into YouTube and see what comes up. The first autofill — “does the Dougie,” from 2011 — is a minute-long video of a then-unknown Floridian swimwear model at an L.A. Clippers game, attempting a hip-hop dance she’d learned just minutes earlier. She’s relaxed and unpracticed, her beachy blond locks swishing like a hula skirt, her camera-wielding friends laughing hysterically. In the lore of Kate Upton the Supermodel, this is the video — no bikini, no Ferrari covered in suds — that famously launched her career. You could say it was just a lucky case of lightning in a bottle: a viral video before the concept of viral had fully gone viral. Or a case of perfect timing: a fresh face, in every sense, to modeling bigwigs who’d signed enough gaunt, expressionless mugs to last a lifetime. Or maybe it was more revelatory than that: a beautiful woman knocking at the door of an industry that preached perfection, while daring to be — gasp — herself.
Two months before the video hit, Upton, then 18, had already secured a tenuous footing in the industry, having been scouted at an equestrian competition (a beloved childhood sport in which she racked up five championship titles). An open call at age 15 scored her modeling representation, but she decided to cold-dial a major agency’s office on her 18th birthday, the very day she was eligible to be shot for Sports Illustrated. To a less confident teenager, it might have seemed too ballsy a crapshoot. To Upton, it was simply the most obvious move on earth. “I still, to this day, don’t know what the alternative is,” she says. “Like, how else would I meet with them without scheduling a meeting?”
Simple as that, she was signed, and quickly nabbed coveted real estate inside SI’s swimsuit edition. Then she did the Dougie, and the following year, she landed the magazine’s cover. “It was all very innocent and silly,” she recalls of the video. “I had no idea what was going to happen.”
Truly, Upton couldn’t have predicted the sonic boom that came next. By her early twenties, her career had taken off, with advertisers hungry for a taste of her rarefied, paradoxical appeal: cheeky yet refined, goofy yet glam, girl-next-door meets “I’m just drawn this way.” A sprinkle of Malibu Barbie, a dash of old-Hollywood pinup — who you might spot on Instagram outfitted with a fluffy robe, sparkling rosé and a red lip (“Makes me feel fancy,” she says.) In the Carl’s Jr. commercial where she basically deflowers a patty melt, she’s silly and ragingly uninhibited. A Mercedes Super Bowl spot is mostly just her walking in slo-mo, save for the single mic-drop line she purrs to some googly-eyed schlubs washing a Benz: “You missed a spot.” (Both commercials may as well have been selling lacy black lingerie.) In an ad for a baseball video game — on the set of which she met her husband of two years, celebrated Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander (with whom she welcomed daughter Genevieve last year) — she gamely squeezed into a mini bandage dress and invited the dumbfounded stares of four MLB pros. Hollywood came calling, casting her in co-starring roles as a perky mistress in 2014’s The Other Woman, and a conniving boy chaser in 2017’s The Layover. (“The stereotypical dumb blond doesn’t interest me,” she declares of future roles. “I want a full arc and full story.”) To say that Upton, 27, has leaned hard into her looks, her measurements, her c’mere-fellas appeal, would be an understatement.
But just as sex-symbol status turned out not to be so smooth or straightforward for her blond-ambition forebearers (see: Marilyn, Madonna), it hasn’t been for Upton, who admits, “My relationship with fame hasn’t always been an easy road.” She faced a steep curve in learning to follow her gut on set: “ lots of moments where I’m like, ‘What was I thinking? Why did I do that?’ ” she says. “A lot of projects that I really am not proud of, or just are stupid, I had a gut feeling about. And I was either talked into it by an agent or I didn’t want to trust my instinct because I told myself I didn’t know enough about the subject.” She doesn’t say which, exactly; but one imagines Upton has more than complicated feelings about her early-career Guess campaign, which she revealed in 2018 was colored by sexual assault and harassment from co-founder Paul Marciano (allegations he denies). “I wanted to share my story to show young women that’s not normal,” she says. “That treatment shouldn’t happen, and you can still find success and not be put in that position.”
Upton’s fame also forced her to navigate the shift from confident teen traipsing on Florida beaches to suddenly being someone everyone had an opinion about. Her first SI cover, at 19, brought a rush of attention for which she wasn’t prepared — “I was put in a position where I needed to know who I was right away, and I wasn’t there yet; it felt very isolating,” she says — as well as an onslaught of critiques about her curves. “It was shocking and really scary and sad,” she says. “I remember a really big moment in my career where I was questioning why I was continuing to put myself out there in a public way when I was receiving so much criticism.” When she read a stack of fan letters from various women who were “suffering with eating disorders or being bullied — all these different letters about their struggles with their own body image, and how seeing me on magazine covers was inspiring them,” Upton had a lightbulb moment. She sent the stack to Anna Wintour, in both a bid for a Vogue cover (which she landed in 2013), and a chance to address a dyed-in-the-wool fashion audience about healthy body image. “It was a huge turning point in my career,” she says.
The article did celebrate her curves, of course, but the statement of her cover ownership alone helped to spark inclusivity conversations in the industry, years before they were trendy. Likewise, it hardly seems coincidental that her second SI cover was followed shortly by the covers of model Ashley Graham and pro wrestler Ronda Rousey — two women who might have been deemed unthinkable SI ambassadors just years before.
