Here’s Katherine Webb Without Makeup

by idlyitw Feb 13th, 2014

So yeah, here’s Katherine Webb without makeup. Damn. She says on Instagram:

Feeling confident enough today to post this, finally. I have quite a few imperfections too! Grew up feeling insecure and self-conscious about my skin and the white patches that cover half my body, but I don’t care what people think anymore. I just had to get really good at doing makeup. “That’s why I began doing makeup in the first place: I was hoping that through helping people see the beauty in themselves, I could try and find it in me.” -Kevin Aucoin (celebrity makeup artist)

If you were waiting for me to say she looks bad, sorry. She looks fantastic. More of this please. Look, I understand the importance of makeup for women since they are unfortunately judged by their looks (yes, I just typed that), and I’m not saying makeup is bad, but a woman should wear and do whatever makes her feel the most beautiful. I can tell you you’re beautiful all day, but if you don’t believe it, the words won’t matter. And yes, it is kinda brave for a woman to post a pic like this, because men and women are always ready to project their insecurities onto to you. On the other hand, and I’m not speaking for all men here, but the more makeup you wear the more scared I’ll be of what’s underneath. Sure, you look hot in a club and we’ll take you home, but this picture is what we want to wake up to. Then have morning sex. Twice. Then again in the shower. And don’t worry about the sandwich. You just lie back and relax. The waffles will be ready in a minute.

By now we all know the infamous story of Katherine Webb’s launch to fame. While cheering on her quarterback boyfriend, A. J. McCarron, at the B.C.S. championship game, the Alabama beauty queen was spotted in the crowd by ESPN’s Brent Musburger, who couldn’t help but get a little . . . distracted. Since then, she’s used the incident, however controversial, to jumpstart her career, acting as a Super Bowl anchor, starring in the upcoming ABC show Splash (celebrities diving), posing forSports Illustrated, and—most recently—gracing the pages of our April issue. VF Daily caught up with the modern-day Cindy Crawford about her underwater beauty secrets, her insecurities growing up, and her Shakespearian relationship with McCarron. Highlights from our chat:

__VF Daily:__From what I understand, Alabama football games are a big social event. Maybe that’s an understatement. What did you do with your friends to prep for the games?

Katherine Webb: Oh, gosh. As you know the South is known for its hospitality, traditions, football, pageants, and food. Football is almost like a religion here. People say their priorities are faith, family, and then football. People eat, breathe, and sleep it in the South. It’s a huge deal. We just go tailgating and a lot of people will buy barbecue and beer. They’ll play corn-hole toss and beer pong and different things like that. People will decorate their cars with window paint, and they’ll have flags representing their team as they go to the game. A lot of the girls will totally dress up in their favorite team’s colors. A girl will dress up head to toe. Girls will wear their team game-day dresses with their face tattoos. It’s like the Kentucky Derby of Southern football.

Did you wear face tattoos?

I did! I wore a little tattoo on my cheek.

Cute!

It’s really cute! That’s when I was at Auburn, so I’d go to the Auburn games and I’d wear the Auburn logo as a tattoo on my cheek, or a paw print or something like that. Football is like a religion, hence the state of Alabama having one of the greatest rivalries in all of college football between Auburn and Alabama. People from both teams take it so seriously. Teams have said they hate each other. It’s creating almost a civil war within one state. Now you can see why an Auburn grad, who is a beauty queen dating a University of Alabama star quarterback, will make national headlines. People call us the Romeo and Juliet of Alabama.

That’s funny. Does that influence how you dress at games? Do you know that there’s going to be a lot of cameras on you, and you have to maintain a certain composure?

I’ve never really been the type to dress up like the other girls do. I’m more of a casual, relaxed kind of girl. More athletic. I’ll wear my jeans and then my favorite jersey. I don’t have to feel like I’ll dress up like some of the other girls do.

How do the other girls dress up?

Dressed to the nines. If you think of the Kentucky Derby, girls are totally prim and proper. In their dresses, just perfect. Then you come to the South and you watch an Alabama-Auburn football game, and you have the sorority girls and the other girls dressed in their game-day dresses. They’ll have boots on, and they’ll have their pearl earrings on. It’s an excuse for girls to dress up.

We take any opportunity.

Exactly. I’m more casual and relaxed. I would dress up, but it’s a football game—I’m there to watch football. I’m there with a few of my really good friends and family. I was never in a sorority, so I never did what a lot of the other girls did. My first time being on national television was at the B.C.S. National Championship Game. I didn’t know they were going to show me on national television, so there I was wearing my No. 10 Alabama jersey and my jeans.

Katherine Webb, girlfriend of AJ McCarron, steals BCS spotlight

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron won a second BCS National Championship on Monday, but it was his girlfriend who won the Internet.

Katherine Webb, who has been dating the Alabama quarterback for about a month, started trending on Twitter early in Alabama’s win over Notre Dame. Plenty of air time during the broadcast and an awkward exchange between the ESPN announcers served as a Twitter boost for the former Miss Alabama USA.

ROLL TIDE:Alabama routs Notre Dame to claim BCS title

Webb, a 23-year-old Montgomery, Ala., native and Auburn alum, saw her followers increase from around 2,300 to more than 109,000 by early Tuesday morning.

But as her following grew – including for a brief time Miami Heat forward LeBron James – Webb was mostly oblivious. Her phone was dead.

“I did get to check it a little bit through a friend’s phone,” she told USA TODAY Sports. “It’s been crazy.”

Among the more bizarre turns of her moment-by-moment increase in popularity was Arizona Cardinals DT Darnell Dockett posting his number and inviting her to a strip club. He later deleted the tweet and said he meant to send Webb a direct message.

McCarron responded to some of the tweets on Tuesday morning. To Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray, who said Webb needed to become a Bulldogs fan, McCarron wrote, “u don’t win enough bud!! #15”

To Dockett, McCarron wrote, “u better worry ab being in them playoffs, then going to king of diamonds homie.. #betterkeepdreaming like the rest of these dudes.”

Coming off his second national championship in as many years, McCarron couldn’t feel threatened by the attention. Both Webb and McCarron said he’s not the jealous type, at least not about unwanted advances Webb gets from other men.

Getting a follow from James, however briefly, that’s a different story.

“Say you swear,” he said to a reporter after being told of James following his girlfriend. “Man, I’m gonna tweet him and I’m gonna get a follow. That’s messed up. Hey, I guess she’s more famous than me now.”

The Twitter frenzy started early in the first quarter with Alabama already up 14-0 when ESPN cameras found Webb and McCarron’s mother, Dee Dee Bonner, in the crowd.

Kirk Herbstreit chimed in to say that McCarron must be doing some things right before Musberger added, “If you’re a youngster in Alabama, start getting the football out and throw it around the backyard with pop.”

Told later about her ESPN appearance, Webb said, “Oh Lord. This is the first time that’s kind of ever happened, for me. I’ve never dated someone who’s actually been in the spotlight, so it’s a new thing for me.”

GRADES:Alabama gets A-plus effort in win

Webb finished in the top 10 in the Miss USA competition in June. A model who lives in Los Angeles, she’s used to attention, but even this was unique.

Bonner said she first got a sense of what was happening when she got a text to smile because she was so frequently on camera. The attention wasn’t surprising, she said, and was tamer than some of the “crude and harsh” comments they sometimes hear from rival fans.

“As old as I’m getting, hell, I appreciate the compliments,” Bonner said.

Appropriately, McCarron and Webb met via Twitter when a friend connected them in November. In December, McCarron went to the pageant for Miss Alabama USA 2013, where Webb ended her reign, and the two have been together since.

Following his television interviews on the field after the win, McCarron jogged to the Alabama end zone with a slew of photographers in tow. He hugged his mother and father, fist bumped several other family members and finally found Webb, who bent down for a kiss.

The relationship is still new, but both are excited. McCarron seems to have little to worry about. Webb is talking about moving back to Alabama to be near him.

It’d likely mean more time in the spotlight, but after the wild events of Monday – a second national title and Twitter explosion among them – they expect they’ll handle it just fine.

Early Tuesday morning, Webb tweeted for the first time to her new legion of followers.

She wrote, “So extremely blessed… @10AJMcCarron. Congrats to Alabama and making history! #BCSChamps.”

Miss Alabama USA 2012 Katherine Webb offered a clarification after confirming she’s dating AJ McCarron, the starting quarterback at the University of Alabama.

“I’m not trying to sabotage Alabama,” Webb said.

Some might consider it a necessary disclaimer, since she’s an Auburn University graduate.

Webb, who was raised in the Columbus-Phenix City area, confirmed the romance on Friday. “Yes, we are in a relationship,” she said in a phone interview with the Ledger-Enquirer.

Now that their relationship has made national headlines, some football-based questions have surfaced.

Does Webb still love Auburn? Can she honestly cheer for McCarron and his Alabama teammates?

With the intense rivalry between the two schools, are Auburn-Alabama romances ever OK?

Webb’s answers: yes, yes and yes.

“Honestly, it’s just a game,” she said of the football rivalry.

She plans to travel to Florida to watch Alabama compete against Notre Dame in the upcoming BCS national championship game. Webb said her time as Miss Alabama taught her how to put some allegiances in perspective.

“When you’re a representative of the whole state, you have to kind of bypass your own feelings and love everyone,” she said.

Not everyone’s a fan of that approach.

“I think I’ve had a little bit of backlash from my own alma mater,” said Webb, 23. “Of course I’ll always love Auburn.”

Webb, who advanced to the top 10 in the Miss USA 2012 pageant, said she first met McCarron in person when he attended this year’s Miss Alabama USA pageant, which was held Dec. 7-8 in Montgomery.

Prior to that meeting, they knew of each other due to a series of Twitter exchanges.

“I had not seen him (in person) until I went on stage and saw him in the front row,” Webb said. Since she lives in Los Angeles, Webb said she initially wasn’t too familiar with McCarron’s achievements on the football field.

After the pageant, their relationship progressed.

“We decided to make it official this past weekend,” said Webb, who is home for the holidays visiting family in Alabama.

Even though they’ve already been called the “Romeo and Juliet of Alabama,” Webb said their connection is deeper than trophies or tiaras.

“It has nothing to do with the status,” said Webb, explaining why she’s attracted to McCarron. “He has such an amazing heart. He realizes that family and friends and the people closest to you are most important.”

Brent Musburger has been the voice behind many of sports’ greatest moments, but on a warm January evening in Miami, he helped propel Katherine Webb to fame. Webb, who won Miss Alabama USA in 2012 and is dating Alabama QB A.J. McCarron, was sitting in the stands of the BCS Championship game between The Crimson Tide and Fighting Irish, when Musburger spotted her in the stands. The veteran broadcaster then spoke about Webb’s good looks, saying, “You quarterbacks. You get all the good looking women. What a beautiful women. Whoa. So if you’re a youngster at Alabama. Start getting the football out and throwing it around the backyard with Pops.”

And that’s all it took. Webb went viral, landed on the pages of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, the reality diving show Splash and who knows what’s next. The Auburn grad (yup, she went to Auburn, not Alabama) spoke to SwimDaily about posing for SI vs. the Miss USA contest, trying to make it in Los Angeles and the best advice she ever received.

The belle of college football is staying in the spotlight, and Katherine Webb’s appearance in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue is going to please all of the fans in the state of Alabama.

Oh, who are we kidding: You don’t need to be from Alabama to be excited about her SI photos in a bikini.

SI.com released 30 photos of Webb as it continues its publicity push for the issue’s release this week.

Webb is Miss Alabama and dating Crimson Tide quarterback A.J. McCarron. She’s also an Auburn alum, which creates an interesting balance in a state that lives and dies with that rivalry. She hedged her bets for the swimsuit issue, wearing a split Alabama-Auburn jersey that covers up just enough for a mainstream magazine.

Oh, and there’s much more.

There’s Webb wearing McCarron’s No. 10 jersey. There’s her in shoulder pads and little else. There’s her wearing a cheerleader outfit that we don’t think we’ve ever seen on a sideline. There’s her in a red houndstooth bikini.

So, there’s a little bit of something for everyone. We’re not sure how long Webb’s stay in the spotlight is going to last – she burst onto the scene a little more than a month ago, though it seems like she’s been famous much longer than that with all of her various appearances – but she’s making the most of it. And Sports Illustrated was pretty smart to quickly sign her up for the swimsuit issue.

We assume that Brent Musburger will be waiting by his mailbox until the magazine arrives at his house this week.

Katherine Webb Goes Without Makeup For a ‘Confident’ Bare-Faced Selfie

You may best known Katherine Webb from her appearance at the the BCS Championship football game in 2013 (where an announcer’s comments about her looks went viral) or from her role as Miss Alabama — both of which required a truly impressive amount of makeup. But Webb is ready to show another side of herself: a more low-key, makeup-free side, as she posted on Instagram Wednesday.
“Feeling confident enough today to post this, finally. I have quite a few imperfections too!,” she wrote. But wait, there’s more: “Grew up feeling insecure and self-conscious about my skin and the white patches that cover half my body, but I don’t care what people think anymore. I just had to get really good at doing makeup 😜💋💄 ‘That’s why I began doing makeup in the first place: I was hoping that through helping people see the beauty in themselves, I could try and find it in me.’ -Kevin Aucoin (celebrity makeup artist).”

The star has made no secret of working hard for her looks, but now we know she’s naturally gorgeous too. And she joins a growing group of stars who have shared photos of themselves on social media while at their most intimate, from Cameron Diaz to Rihanna to Selena Gomez to (most recently) Bethenny Frankel.

What do you think of this makeup-free selfie trend? General thoughts?

Former Miss Alabama Katherine Webb has gotten a lot of attention for her looks, but she’s secure enough to show herself au naturel. Webb showed her makeup-free face on Instagram Wednesday, admitting that she had been self-conscious for a long time but is now OK with her imperfections.

When she posted the photo of her face, Webb included a quote about self-confidence. “Feeling confident enough today to post this, finally. I have quite a few imperfections too!,” she wrote. “Grew up feeling insecure and self-conscious about my skin and the white patches that cover half my body, but I don’t care what people think anymore. I just had to get really good at doing makeup.” She added a quote from Kevin Aucoin, celebrity makeup artist: ‘That’s why I began doing makeup in the first place: I was hoping that through helping people see the beauty in themselves, I could try and find it in me.”

Webb, the girlfriend of University of Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron, quickly rose to fame in January when he lead the Alabama Crimson Tide in the AFCA National Championship and took home the trophy with their win over Notre Dame last year.

Webb of course attended the big game, and when the cameras panned to her, the game’s commentators quickly shifted focus to Webb’s beauty.

“You quarterbacks, you get all the good-looking women,” ESPN commentator Brent Musburger said. “What a beautiful woman.”

“Wow!” former Ohio State QB Kirk Herbstreit commented.

“Whoa,” Musburger replied.

After the comments from the sportscasters, the media could not get enough of the beautiful model, and she told Yahoo Sports that she gained scores of Twitter followers and that her phone wouldn’t stop vibrating with incoming texts and emails.

“My phone is dead,” she told Yahoo Sports soon after the BCS game. “My followers went from 2,300 this morning to 96,000 by the end of the night. I don’t know if I should even check now. I don’t know what is going on.”

Webb was sure to thank Musburger for helping her attain national attention.

Katherine Webb on Fitness, Fame, and What’s Next

It’s safe to say brunette bombshell Katherine Webb has already had an incredible 2013. After being called out by ESPN’s Brent Musburger during the nationally televised BCS college football game for her insanely good looks, the model and 2012 Miss Alabama USA has become an overnight media sensation. Since that infamous day, Webb has appeared in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, modeled lingerie for Vanity Fair, covered the Super Bowl for Inside Edition, and is currently showing off her toned and trim bod on the new ABC reality competition show Splash.

We sat down with the media maven to dish on fitness, fame, and what’s next!

SHAPE: First off, tell us about your new show, Splash. It sounds pretty exciting (and intense)!

Katherine Webb (KW): There is definitely nothing like it on TV. It’s basically me and 10 other celebrities in a diving competition. We’ve been training intensely with Olympic diver Greg Louganis for the past six weeks, diving off one- to 10-meter platforms. He really works with us on our form and how we enter the water, because we’ll be judged on all that.

SHAPE: Are you new to diving? How are you adapting to the crazy heights?

KW: This is all totally new to me! I’ve never professionally dove before in my life. I never thought I would be afraid of heights until I got up there and realized I would be jumping 35 feet in the air going 35 miles per hour. You don’t know what’s going to happen and you’re always scared! My main strategy is to have the right mindset and go after my fears. There’s no holding back.

SHAPE: Tell us more about the training you’re doing for the competition. It sounds pretty rigorous!

KW: It really is. We train two hours a day, but it’s pretty exhausting to do more than eight hours a week. The first thing we do is stretch to loosen our muscles. Then Greg does different drills to teach us how to dive properly, have proper posture, and perfect our form in the air. After the basic training, we did trampoline work with a harness and learned how to do tumbling, tricks in the air, things like that. Then we started doing tricks from the platform in a harness. It’s been really scary getting used to the height and free falling into the water. It’s hard not to be worried that you’ll do a belly flop or land on your face!

SHAPE: I can imagine! You seem really athletic and are in such awesome shape. What’s your normal workout routine when you’re not diving?

KW: I’m very tall (5’11”), so that allows me to have more places to store extra fat (laughing). I don’t have to work out as hard to stay in shape because I’m always so busy and I like to eat healthy. I’m in the gym three to four times per week, jogging on the treadmill for at least 30 minutes. I also do weight training to work on my arms and legs. But yes, my height definitely gives me an advantage when it comes to my figure.

SHAPE: You mentioned you like to eat healthy. What’s a typical menu for you every day?

KW: Lately I’ve had to purchase more on-the-go meals because I don’t have time to sit down and eat. I tend to buy the Healthy Choice meals; I really like the Pineapple Chicken with Brown Rice. I just try to stick to clean foods, anything grilled like salmon, chicken, fish, brown rice, and veggies. I do have a really big sweet tooth, so I try to curb my cravings with fruit instead.

SHAPE: Do you have any celebrity body crushes, someone’s figure you really admire?

KW: Candice Swanepoel from Victoria’s Secret! She’s tall and lean, but she also has muscle. I think she has the perfect figure; she really is my woman crush.

SHAPE: Any beauty secrets from your pageant days you can share with us?

KW: Pageant makeup is so different from your day-to-day look. When you’re on stage you really have to pack it on. For every day, I really like a natural foundation like Armani-it’s super thin but covers well. I’m also obsessed with Urban Decay eye primer, and you can’t go wrong with Dior Backstage. I’ve gotten used to using individual lashes as well. A lot of girls will use strip eyelashes, but the glue comes out of each side and it gets messy. Individual lashes make your eyes look bigger and much more natural.

SHAPE: How are you dealing with all this sudden fame? You are everywhere lately!

KW: I’m just taking it day by day and really learning how to create a brand and image for myself. I’m also learning how to handle the media. You have to be 100 percent comfortable with yourself and who you are. You’ll have unflattering pictures posted on the Internet for all to see, so you have to be able to handle yourself and stay true to yourself. I won’t let the industry change me into something I’m not.

SHAPE: What’s next for you?

KW: Everything has happened so fast since January! I definitely want to stay in fashion and focus more into branding and doing campaigns. I’m just finishing up Splash now, but I have a feeling it might be my last time on television. I’ve really enjoyed working with everyone on set, but I don’t love it as much as I enjoy doing other things, like being involved with charity groups, speaking, and traveling. I’m looking forward to moving back to Alabama and traveling when I need to. I’m so grateful for all the opportunities that I have been given, and looking forward to what’s next!
