The 3 Best At-Home Keratin Treatments That Actually Work

For curly and wavy-haired girls that fancy straight looks and prefer to confine hair maintenance to their own bathrooms, there’s nothing better than keeping one of the best at-home keratin treatments that actually work on hand. Keratin treatments are forever trending in salons, but finding a great product you can take home with you isn’t always as easy.

A good keratin treatment will leave your hair smoother and healthier looking than before. But keratin treatments aren’t exactly one-size-fits-all. In fact, they’ve gained notoriety in the hair straightening community because of the vast — and slightly overwhelming — assortment of formulas available. Some treatments work specifically to hide damage, while others work in conjunction with additional ingredients that help smooth and straighten the hair for an extended period of time. These formulas can be harsh, but they can also be an effective way to straighten hair and save you from daily heat styling that can lead to serious damage. Some types include natural ingredients, which also help smooth the hair, making it more manageable.

Regardless of the formula you choose, make sure you have an aftercare plan ready and a friend handy for your treatment to ensure the ultimate salon experience.

1. An Argan Treatment Set For Smoother, Stronger Hair

This keratin treatment kit is formulated with rich proteins and amino acids that can target damage and smooth hair in one treatment. The formula contains argan oil, to help replenish and moisturize, as well as keratin and collagen to strengthen broken strands. Reviewers notice this product leaves hair prone to frizziness and humidity more manageable, which means less breakage from daily styling.

2. A High-Quality Treatment That Straightens Hair

For those looking for a home treatment that’ll straighten, the photos of this keratin treatment speak for themselves. It’s designed to work quickly, without needing to leave the treatment in for several days or twenty-four hours. Depending on length, hair will be straighter after a few hours, according to the description and many Amazon reviewers. This treatment takes away frizz, hides damage, and leaves hair smooth for months.

3. A Formaldehyde- & Aldehyde-Free Treatment For Straighter Hair

This is a great keratin treatmentoption for anyone looking for alternatives to straighteners with formaldehyde and aldehyde in them. Even reviewers with fine-hair find this treatment to be super effective at smoothing the hair and hiding damage. This is a salon-like treatment for salon-worthy results.

Why should you apply keratin treatment on your hair? Even though keratin protein is naturally found in your hair, you need more of it so as to make your hair healthier, shinier and straighter. This regimen can replace your lost keratin to straighten your hair and minimize frizz, making it look radiant and smooth.

Keratin treatments work by implanting keratin protein into your hair to make it look smooth and straight for several months. Some products include formaldehyde, which is a chemical that can offer more permanent outcome. Regardless of what keratin hair treatment you choose, it is significant that you follow the instructions accurately in order to enjoy its maximum results.

I Tried a Keratin Straightening Treatment and Honestly, Life Will Never Be the Same

David Urbanke

This is the story of how a keratin straightening treatment actually changed my life.

My journey began two months ago, when I volunteered as tribute to undergo Goldwell’s Kerasilk Control Keratin Treatment, a hair straightening process that didn’t contain formaldehyde, unlike so many other options out there. I won’t lie: The idea of saying goodbye to my 3A curls for three to five months tugged at my heart, but the appeal of getting a long-term, lower maintenance hairstyle without the sketchy ingredients was too appealing to pass up.

In the past, the only time I straightened my curls was for long weekends or trips to particularly dry climates when I knew that it would be easier to manage than my voluminous waves. Also, I’ll admit it: I’ve secretly wanted smooth, straight hair since I first witnessed the Anne Hathaway makeover montage in Princess Diaries back in 2001, and even Carrie Bradshaw wore her hair straight every now and again. Not to mention, my curls wouldn’t be gone forever. I was assured multiple times they would grow back.

The treatment I received is the Kersailk Control Smoothing Service, which costs anywhere from $350 to $600 depending on hair length. (Disclaimer: My service was complementary for the purposes of this article). The process promises straight hair with minimal maintenance. All it involves is a solution being applied to twice-washed hair, which is then heat-sealed with a flat iron. Easy!

The “Thermal-activated KeraShape Technology” offers two options — one that eliminates curl completely (Smooth Intense), and one that keeps a bit of wave (Smooth Medium). Because I wanted a dramatic change to post on Instagram, I opted for the Smooth Intense.

But before I got started, I had some questions. Luckily, my stylist, Meri Kate O’Connor (bless her and her patience) was able to help me out.

How doeskeratin hair straightening work?

Essentially, the high concentrations of keratin seep into the hair and are sealed into the shaft by heat from a flat iron. “Keratin treatments fill in the porosity of your hair, as overly-porous hair causes tangles, frizz, and breakage,” hairstylist Abraham Sprinkle explained to InStyle. “Your hair is made up of keratin, so the treatment is putting the protein back into the hair, which is often lost due to age and chemical services.” The downside? This specific treatment is only available at Goldwell salons, so you’ll have to do your research.

How long does a keratin treatment last?

O’Connor told me that the treatment would last for about three to five months. She added that most women who have the treatment year-round will have it done every six months.

But you don’t have to completely eliminate the curl, right?

Right. There are two components to the treatment. The first eliminates the frizz (this is called the Shape Medium), and there are two options for the second component: You can either eliminate curl completely (Smooth Intense) or just tame the wave/curl (Smooth Medium).

Once you select the second option, it is mixed in equal parts with the Shape Medium and applied to the hair. If you want to keep a slight curl, you should opt for the Smooth Medium to keep at least some of your waves intact.

I received the Shape Medium/Smooth Intense treatment.

What if you don’t have curly hair?

The treatment will still eliminate the frizz/flyaways and stray cowlicks. Think of it as a constant blowout, but without the barrel curled ends or the complementary champagne.

Does the treatment work on color-treated hair? And on all hair textures and thicknesses?

The treatment has restorative properties, according to O’Connor, so it can actually improve the texture and condition of color treated hair to some extent. Virgin hair — like mine — works best, as it’s able to absorb more of the keratin. O’Connor added that the process might take a bit longer with fine hair because she has to go over the sections with a flat iron a few extra times.

What about formaldehyde?

Unlike a traditional Brazilian blowout, the Kerasilk Control treatment does not — repeat, not — use formaldehyde. That said, is this completely chemical free? No. The keratin formula does have other chemicals in it, though not the kind used to preserve dead animals.

How long does the process take?

That depends on how much hair you have. If you’re #blessed with the kind of heavy, thick mane that results in a ponytail tension headache after two hours in an updo, it will take hours. We’re talking three to four hours from start to finish. If, like me, you’ve got a lot of thick hair, I would recommend clearing your schedule and throwing an extra book and your phone charger in your bag.

Do I have to avoid water in the days following?

Nope! Following the treatment, O’Connor told me I could even go home and wash my hair if I wanted. Four shampoos in a day felt a bit much for me, but I did take a dip in a pool the following weekend. Not only did my hair not curl, but after driving across the Verrazano Bridge with all of the car windows down, my hair air dried perfectly straight, and I was able to finger comb out the tiny tangles. It’s the closest I’ve come to witnessing a miracle.

What’s the upkeep?

Nada. Zilch. Zero. I’ve continued to wash my hair with the prescribed Kerasilk Control Shampoo and Conditioner (about 3-4 times a week) and let it air dry. No styling products. No heat (which has been a Godsend this summer). I can go from shower to subway to work in an hour’s time, and in 2 hours my hair has completely air dried to the state pictured above. A bit of the curl has come through, it appears as a natural wave rather than a random curly coil.

Here’s a detailed recap of what thekeratin hair straightening service is like:

As I mentioned, the treatment took a little over three hours from start to finish. The process begins with a double shampoo to completely strip away any dirt, oil, grime or products. Next, my hair was blown dry (the stylist used an assistant to speed the process up a bit — and I have to say I’ve never felt more pampered than having two women working in tandem with blow dryers).

After my hair was 80 percent dried, O’Connor sectioned my hair into three parts and began applying the treatment itself — a 1:1 ratio of Shape Medium (to control frizz) and the Smooth Intense (to straighten the curl). After painting the mixture onto my entire head, the solution was left to sit for 15 minutes.

RELATED: Hairstylists Can Tell When Someone Is Being Abused

And then, the fun part. O’Connor then blow-dried my hair while the solution (which felt like a leave-in conditioner) was still in it, using a wide, ventilated paddle brush to do so. Given the thick consistency of the product, it took quite a bit of time.

Afterwards, she used a flat iron at 450 degrees to flatten my curls into oblivion. Starting at the nape of the neck, she took sections about 2-3 inches wide and ironed them several times. This process — the aforementioned thermal-activation process — is the most important part of the entire service. An interesting side note: The flat-ironing resulted in big puffs of white steam, and my black cape was soon covered in white flakes of product, which I was assured was normal. The process was not otherwise uncomfortable (not even tingly).

After it was dried and straightened, I was shampooed once more to wash out the solution. Finally, O’Connor followed up with a sealant and another blow dry, but this one took just 15 minutes — a welcome change from my usual 45-minute blowouts. Having had curly hair since puberty, I have to admit it was shocking to watch her just use her fingers while shaking the blow dryer back and forth across my scalp rather than a round brush and a downward motion. Once the hair was completely dry, it hung straight from scalp with no need for touch ups. The texture was smooth and silky, and you bet I spent the entire evening running my hands through it like I was Selena Gomez in a Pantene commercial.

The bottom line:

I haven’t touched a hairdryer in weeks. I haven’t purchased any other hair products, and don’t have to worry about a little sweat activating my any baby curls at my temples, the way I previously had to whenever I straightened my hair. I do miss my curls (these before photos are making me nostalgic!), and I’ll probably return to them once the treatment grows out, but as far as a no-maintenance summer look is concerned, this one’s hard to beat.

In the pursuit of silky, swingy, frizz-free hair, there are a dizzying number of tempting in-salon hair-smoothing options to choose from, including, of course, the ever-popular keratin treatment. Famed for its strand-softening and straightening abilities, keratin treatments have been trendy for the better part of the last decade, if not longer than that. But, what, exactly does the whole process entail? To get the full lowdown, we grilled cosmetic chemists, as well as professional hairstylists, on what works (and what’s safe). Here, find the eight things you — and your hair — need to know before you officially commit.

1. Keratin doesn’t defrizz your hair.

“Keratin treatment” has become the term of choice for hair-smoothing processes that leave your hair frizz-free for weeks (even months). But forget about the word keratin. “It’s just a marketing buzzword; it’s not doing anything to smooth the hair,” says cosmetic chemist Randy Schueller, editor of

2. There are, however, several ingredients that can smooth your hair or help it to stay smooth for weeks on end.

First, a quick chemistry lesson: Think of straight hair as a ladder and curly hair as a spiral staircase. The steps on both are the hair’s bonds. If you break those bonds, you can rebuild the spiral staircase as a ladder — so curly hair becomes straight. Ammonium thioglycolate and sodium hydroxide permanently break the bonds — that’s how traditional relaxers and Japanese straightening treatments transform the texture of the hair. “These treatments last until your hair grows out, but they can be damaging,” says Schueller. They can also subject you to a very awkward growing-out phase. Some keratin treatments (and the popular Brazilian Blowout) saturate the hair with a formaldehyde solution before it’s dried and flatironed. The formaldehyde (yes, it’s a suspected carcinogen for humans) locks the hair into that straighter position so it stays smooth beyond your next shampoo. Your natural texture then gradually returns over two to five months.

3. Just because a stylist or hair-care company says a hair-smoothing treatment is formaldehyde-free, doesn’t mean it is.

No hair treatment will technically contain formaldehyde (because — a little more chemistry for you — it’s a gas). What they can contain are methylene glycol, formalin, methanal, and methanediol — ingredients that release formaldehyde when heated or mixed with water. Because salon treatments don’t require FDA approval, you need to do your own due diligence if you want a formaldehyde-free service. Ask your stylist if the treatment contains formaldehyde (or formaldehyde-releasing ingredients). If they say no, then ask them what exactly will be smoothing your hair. Remember: Keratin (or peptides or silk proteins) is not an acceptable answer. If a treatment is going to defrizz your hair for any length of time, it needs to contain an ingredient that releases the f word or a chemical that permanently breaks the bonds in the hair (see number two). Or it could contain the new smoothing ingredient on the scene.

4. That’s right: There’s now a formaldehyde alternative.

Several new hair-smoothing treatments — Goldwell Kerasilk, Trissola Solo, Supersilk Smoothing System, and Cezanne Perfect Finish — use glyoxylic acid (or a derivative of it) to lock the hair into a straighter position. There’s also the Keratin Complex treatment, which touts itself as a personalized blowout with no downtime, and is celebrating its 10th year. The good news: They’re 100 percent formaldehyde-free. The bad news: They’re not quite as powerful as the toxic stuff. Results don’t usually last more than two or three months, and these treatments won’t dramatically soften your curl pattern the way formaldehyde solutions can. “They’re not intended to straighten your hair,” says hairstylist Nunzio Saviano.

5. Hair-smoothing treatments can be the ticket to a great short haircut.

Have you ever had a stylist talk you out of a pixie? It’s not your face shape — it’s your frizz. That’s why many hairstylists now do a smoothing treatment before a major chop. Henri Borday, the director of education for Cezanne Perfect Finish, says he’s even seen an uptick in men coming in for the treatment. If you want to cut your hair short, or already have, look for a salon that does incremental pricing for their smoothing treatments. (You shouldn’t pay the same amount as the girl with Sofia Vergara waves in the chair next to you.)

6. You’ll need to switch your shampoo afterwards — but you don’t need to buy theirs.

Many brands that make salon smoothing treatments also sell take-home products that they claim will extend your results. Buy them if you want, but don’t feel pressured. “Any sulfate-free shampoo will work,” says Saviano. Some favorites include the Aveeno Pure Renewal Shampoo, Kevin Murphy’s Repair Me Wash, and the Caviar Anti-Aging Moisture Intense Oil Crème Shampoo. Also, stay away from one particular styling product: Beach-wave sprays are often loaded with sulfates and salts and can cause frizz to reappear prematurely.

There seems to be no other product that syncs perfectly with frizz-free shiny hair as Keratin. Almost every woman out there knows why Keratin is a magic word in hair treatment. It is the key to getting the ever coveted straight and silky hair which is every woman’s dream. But it isn’t without its downsides as well. The fact that Keratin based products are rich in formaldehyde makes it a target for widespread criticism about its safety and efficacy. But hey, the results speak for themselves. Keratin treatments brands are at a ll time high in terms of usage and popularity, and the re-order rate of these products show an ever increasing trend which justifies the effectiveness of Keratin treatment brands.

How did we choose the best Keratin Hair treatment brands?

Keratin is an essential constituent which contains natural protein found in the hair that helps your hair stay elastic and look youthful. It also helps smooth its surface, heading to silky, kink-free hair. Unfortunately, keratin can be depleted due to over styling, heat, chemicals, and other damaging processes. Picking the best requires a lot of time because there are lots of options available on the market. Here are the things you need to check out when getting one:

  1. Effective product ingredients
  2. Health and safety compliance
  3. Time spent on treatment and aftercare required
  4. Purpose and function

Effective product Ingredients :

As mentioned, Keratin treatments contain other ingredients asides Keratin itself. However, it is important that the treatment does not contain harsh chemicals and ingredients that can be potentially harmful to the hair. Although some of these products contain formaldehyde and other chemicals which help to make their effect last longer and can also nourish the hair, it is essential that if these chemicals are present at all, they should exist only in minimal amounts that are safe for your health since formaldehyde can be potentially harmful. Thus while we accept products that contain formaldehyde in our rankings, our preferences lean more towards those with minimal amounts of formaldehyde.

Health and safety compliance:

We ensure that all Keratin treatments contained in this list are compliant with safety guidelines. This means they do not contain abnormally high levels of chemicals that can potentially damage the hair and has been certified to be so.

Time spent on treatment and aftercare required:

Most Keratin treatments need some time to prep and to apply. Even after application some of them requires a long wait usually about 72 hours for the treatment to take full effect before it is washed off. While we generally favour those treatments which require less time to boot, we also know that for maximum and longer lasting results, these options that require more time to set are more efficient in the long run. Thus our list includes some express spray and goes product, but we have also included some keratin treatments that require long setting time as well all of which delivers desirable results depending largely on your preference.

Frequently asked questions

  1. What is keratin treatment?

Keratin is a type of protein which occurs naturally in your hair follicles. Keratin is one of the main constituents of the hair and plays a huge part in determining its structure. Because of how important Keratin is to strengthen the hair, it is used in Keratin treatment which is meant to restore your hairs natural smoothness and make it shinier.

  1. Can keratin treatment help to thicken your hair?

Keratin is a structural protein which is quite important to hair formation. Getting a keratin treatment can potentially help to combat thinning hair by increasing the thickness of your hair. However, because of the possibility of this process causing damage, it must be carried out with utmost care and preferably with products which are free from formaldehyde and similar compounds that can cause damage on excessive use on the hair.

  1. What are the benefits of getting a keratin treatment?

You must have heard a lot about the potential benefits of getting a keratin treatment. A lot of what you have heard about Keratin treatment is probably correct. Keratin form bonds on the rough-edged of your hair and completely covers the cuticle. This not only helps to straighten it but also improves its strength and shine. A keratin treatment also has nourishing properties and can help to make your hair cuticles thicker.

  1. Can keratin treatment damage my hair?

Chances are if you have heard about the potential benefits of Keratin treatment then you probably have heard about the possibility of having your hair damaged by it. It is true that when done correctly Keratin treatment can help to improve your hair’s overall health. At the same time, incorrect use can cause damage to your hair as well. For example, some Keratin treatment oil and creams contain formaldehyde which has been shown to be potentially dangerous to your hair and is even considered carcinogenic by some. The heat from the tools used for Keratin treatments can also cause damage and breakage to the hair.

  1. Are there Keratin Treatment products without Formaldehyde?

While formaldehyde is one of the main constituents of many Keratin treatment product, it is possible to find products with minimal or completely non-existence levels of Formaldehyde and similarly harsh chemicals that can damage the hair.

  1. How much time does a Keratin treatment cream or oil have to stay on my hair?

For most Keratin treatment products, you have to let it sit in your hair for a while before finally washing it off. The time required for this varies from one product to the other. Some products require very little time, usually just within hours. In other cases, the product requires as much as 72 hours to sit to achieve optimum results.

Of course, you must note that the results you achieve with these different products vary from one to the other. Those keratin hair treatment products which require less time might also last for a short time compared to those who have to stay on for longer before washing off. This means you have to check each product you buy for how long it will last before purchasing.

For frizz free hair we can recommend any of the products highlighted above. However, you must put into consideration certain factors as well as your personal preferences when making your final choice before making your purchase. You should also put the fact that results vary from one individual to the other into consideration when choosing between these products. In all, we can say that buying any of these products will most likely help you unlock that perfect magical hair you have always desired.

The Puretanica Cool Bliss shampoo and conditioner is the undisputed puck in the ever dynamic realm of Keratin based products. You just cannot go wrong with this fabulous product.

We often go to the salon to get hair treatments done, but what if you can do it yourself at home? That would most certainly be convenient, especially at times when you’re too busy or just can’t leave the house. One of the hair care pampering sessions you can DIY is a keratin treatment. You can definitely give yourself a keratin treatment at home and the result would be the same! But before we go into all of that, let’s talk about what it is and what it does.

What is keratin treatment?

Keratin treatment helps repair the damage on your hair, replacing the protein that your strands have lost due to chemical treatments, heat styling, and other damaging conditions you have exposed your tresses to. It rebuilds the damaged areas, adds shine, and eliminates frizz so your hair becomes more beautiful and easier to manage.

Keratin treatments do wonders to your hair, offering a wide range of benefits like adding moisture to the strands that help make them soft and smooth and making your tresses strong, shiny, and free from flyaways.

DIY Keratin Treatment

If you can’t make it to the salon, you can incorporate an at-home keratin treatment to your hair care routine. But of course, you have know how to do it correctly so you can make the most of its benefits. You can begin by getting to know our favorite keratin treatment product: TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Treatment Mask.

If you’re going to give yourself an actual keratin treatment, make sure to maintain it with a keratin mask like this. This product helps to give you an instantly smoother style and frizz control.

Now, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you DIY that keratin hair treatment at home so you can give your locks a major reboot.

How to Use Keratin Treatment at Home

1. Shampoo your hair

Gently massage your scalp with your finger tips (and not your nails!) when shampooing your hair. Credit:

Wash hair with a good keratin shampoo for complimentary ingredient benefits. If you have straight hair, wash twice; if you have extremely curly hair, add at least one more wash.

Note: DO NOT use a conditioner. Also, make sure hair is thoroughly rinsed.

2. Massage treatment onto your hair.

Work the keratin product on your hair.

Towel dry hair gently but leave some moisture so hair can easily absorb the product. Coat your strands with the keratin treatment, starting from the tips going up. Stop at one inch from the scalp. Gently massage your hair with the product.

3. Leave the treatment on your hair for 30 minutes

Let treatment “sink in” by leaving it on your hair for 30 minutes. Credit: iStok

With the product still on your hair, comb your locks gently with a wide-tooth comb. Then let it set for thirty minutes.

4. Rinse your hair

Rinse hair thoroughly after your hair has absorbed the keratin treatment.

Rinse thoroughly to make sure there’s no product buildup left on your hair as this may cause dandruff.

5. Blow dry and iron your hair

Gently brush your hair while blow drying.

Blow-dry your hair while brushing. Once completely dry, separate hair into small sections and lock the keratin in by ironing each section thoroughly. Iron your hair one small section at a time so the heat is applied evenly.

6. Wait

Wait 48 hours before washing your hair again.

Keep hair dry—wait for 48 hours before washing. This gives the keratin treatment more time to seep into your hair and work its magic. Make sure you don’t tuck your hair behind your ears or tie it. Just keep it down and straight.

7. Wash with shampoo and conditioner

After 48 hours, you can now wash your hair. Use shampoo and conditioner (we love TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo and TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Conditioner), then blow dry.

What do you think of DIY keratin treatment? It is possible, not to mention easy, to give yourself a keratin treatment at home. Just make sure you’re doing it right!

I haven’t gotten a keratin in over two years, but there was a time when the treatments transformed my relationship with my hair, serving as an important half-step between obsessively straightening it and letting it run wild. Keratin treatments helped me learn to love and care for my natural wave and texture. Although I have no plans to get another one, I’m asked for keratin tips all the time. I’m resurfacing this story, originally published in March 2017, for anyone looking into it as a means to changing their relationship with their hair. -Haley

I spent my senior year of college dying my hair dark brown because Newton’s fourth law demands every blonde person do this to tragic effect at least once. The photos still haunt. When I decided to go back to my natural color, I underwent a series of orangey transformations that left my hair fried and dignity tarnished. There were rearview mirror tears shed in salon parking lots and refunds I deserved but was too ashamed to ask for. Once I arrived at a vaguely palatable shade of yellow, I looked into getting a keratin treatment.

At $300, it was more money than I’d ever spent in a single go, but I was desperate to fix the witch’s broom that had become of my head (witches weren’t trending yet). I’d also been straightening it for years and was getting really sick of it. I could have learned Mandarin in all the time I spent running a hot iron down my stupid head from age 14 to 21!

This is the part where you realize it’s 2 a.m. and you’re actually watching an informercial, because keratin treatments ended up changing my relationship with my hair forever. Damage repair is what sent me there, but the incredible reduction in hair maintenance swept me right off my pink paws. You know how much time I’ve spent on my hair since? Almost zero time! You know how much Mandarin I know now? Also zero, but not the point.

My hair is frizzy, wavy, thick and coarse — a perfectly okay combination that irritates me deeply. In its natural state, wearing it down and tying it up were always equally distracting and uncomfortable. I would straighten it to abate those irritations and then put a wave back into it, because I didn’t like it straight. I don’t know. I’m sweating just thinking about it.

Now, I’m a full keratin loyalist. My hair is still thick but feels less so, the waves are more subtle, it’s only coarse-ish and it dries more beachy than frizzy. I wash it, let it dry and go. It’s still a little messy, but I like it. I’ve gotten around 10 treatments in the six years since BleachGate. But! They weren’t all equally effective. I’ve taken a lot of bad advice from which I’d now like to save you.

First, a quick word on wtf a keratin treatment is: It’s a combination of chemicals that break down your hair’s natural structure, which is then rebuilt with a very hot flat iron, making it straighter — but not dead straight and not permanently. “Keratin” is a protein in your hair but, as associated with the treatment, it’s just a marketing buzzword.

Don’t be f👀led.

Here’s what else your stylist won’t tell you:

1. “Permanent crease” fears are unwarranted.

After my first keratin, I was instructed to not even put my hair behind my ears (let alone up) for five days lest I cause a permanent indentation. I let my dead straight hair hang around my face in curtains all week; I was scared to touch it and looked unhinged. This is silly and totally unnecessary unless you’re after a 2003 Avril Lavigne look. Hair-tucking and ponytails don’t do a damn thing, just don’t be too aggressive about it. No Kim K ponies.

2. Do not get it wet for as long as humanly possible after the treatment.

I’ve noticed the don’t-wash-for-48-hours rules getting increasingly lax, with some salons going so far as to say you can get it wet right away but just not shampoo it. FAKE NEWS! In my experience, this severely weakens and shortens the treatment. I don’t get my hair wet for a whole week if I can manage it. (Which I totally can, hashtag That Wet Look, copyright Claire Carusillo.)

3. The newer, more “natural” solutions don’t work as well.

Time for bad news. Most keratin solutions, when heated, release a carcinogenic gas called formaldehyde. According to David Andrews, Ph.D., a senior scientist at Environmental Working Group, exposure (like a few times a year) puts you at minimal risk, but I v much understand if that scares you. There are more natural options out there (like Cezanne Perfect Finish) but, in my experience, they don’t work nearly as well despite the stylist insisting they do. Sad.

4. A good one can last more than six months.

If you did the math on my 10 treatments in 6+ years, I do not abide by re-upping every few months as many salons suggest. In my experience, with good care, they last far longer. In fact, I’ve gone over a year before re-upping and never felt like my hair really went back. Maybe my hair just holds on to it. But I also don’t apply heat, I wash it as seldom as I can (about once a week) and when I do, I clean it with non-shampoo New Wash and skip conditioner.

5. Prioritizing reviews over deals is a good idea.

This is just logic, but with an expensive treatment like this, it’s really hard to not get caught up on cost and jump on a Groupon the second you see it. Believe me when I say all keratin treatments are not the same. I’ve gotten bad ones; read reviews closely before booking (and look for actual brand names since most salons carry multiple — my favorite is Cadiveu but it’s hard to find). Even better: Get a recommendation from a friend that includes salon, solution brand and stylist to be extra safe. And if you have one for New York, give it to me too, please?

Even if the only strain you put your hair through is the regular brushing or combing maintenance, it will still lose and shed protein as it grows. Keeping your hair in optimal health is a constant battle of making sure the protein bonds on each strained of hair are protected or rebuilt. Keratin is one of the proteins that your hair loses over time and applying more onto your hair can help strengthen your hair and bring out a healthy shine and minimize frizz. If you plan on doing anything to your hair that can potentially damage it, like straightening or blow drying, for example, adding extra protein into your hair to minimize the effect is an absolute must. But what type of keratin treatment is best for you? Never fear; we’ve done the research for you.

We reviewed dozens of keratin treatments to identify the best of the best. We looked for the keratin treatments that will repair severely damaged hair and those that will protect it from future damage. We found the treatments that are perfect for straightening and even those that will keep your curls smooth and bouncy. No matter your hair type or condition, we have the right keratin treatment for you listed below.

Our Top Pick: L’ANZA Keratin Healing Oil Hair Treatment

The L’ANZA Keratin Healing Oil Hair Treatment will act to both heal and protect your hair. The keratin will replenish your hair’s depleted keratin – no matter the cause – making it stronger and less likely to break or show damage. The overall feel of your hair will be all the more improved by the Phyto IV Complex that adds luster and softens hair with the blend of oils. The complex includes abyssinian flower oil, acai fruit oil, babassu kernel oil and coffee seed oil to add life and improve your hair all over.

You’ll place this in your wet or damp hair and leave it in before any heat styling. It’s intended for blow drying to set the keratin into your hair’s follicles, but a flat iron or straightening brush will see the same type of benefit. Best Budget Pick: ArtNaturals Argan Oil Hair Mask

Best for Budget ArtNaturals Argan Oil Hair Mask

Try the ArtNaturals Argan Oil Hair Mask and protect both your hair and your budget.

$12.95 USD

ArtNaturals Argan Oil Hair Mask is a keratin treatment that relies heavily on its other ingredients to protect your hair so that the keratin can do its job of replenishing your lost keratin without it bothering with more damage you keep piling onto your hair. That means that by applying this mask to your hair, the keratin will restore your hair and the mask will keep your harsh techniques from causing further damage. This tactic will help you build back your hair’s shine and health over time. The longer you use this, the more of a difference you’ll see in restoration.

The argan oil is the big seller for the additional ingredients list because, along with the oil’s protective qualities, it will also stimulate your scalp to produce more hair. This effect makes the mask a wonderful candidate for those who want to add thickness or volume to their hair and for those who are experiencing hair loss or thinning. You’ll simply apply the mask to wet or damp hair, leave it in for three to five minutes, and rinse.

This keratin treatment for your hair has a huge number of customer reviews on Amazon; well over 5,000. And they’ve all contributed to the overall rating of 4.3 stars – a solid rating. But the best part of this keratin treatment, by far, is the price tag; pick one up for right around $10.

Who Should Buy a Keratin Treatment

If you’ve noticed damage to your hair, then a keratin treatment may go a long way in bringing life back to your hair. You’ll see the depletion of keratin in your hair over time and that shows itself through split ends, breaking, thinning, dull color, and frizziness. It’s caused by practically everything you do to tame your hair: using a curling iron or hot hair rollers, blow drying, hair coloring, relaxing, perming, straightening, using hair spray or gel – the list goes on and on. If you use any of these styling methods, you should give some serious thought to treating your hair to repair the damage or even as a precaution to protect it from the future damage you may cause.

No matter how good you are to your hair, though, nor how healthy it is, as you age, the amount of keratin in your hair will inevitably reduce. This is just yet another fact of aging. The keratin deficiency will show through a number of ways, not the least of which will be the frizz and a good keratin treatment a couple of times a year will go a long way to maintaining healthy locks, even if it’s losing keratin like a sieve. So while you age, keratin treatments will become less of a “nice to do” task and more of a “need to do it” maintenance item.

While the keratin treatments will protect and replenish your hair all matter of hair sins, the primary use for keratin treatments is in conjunction with straightening. If you have curly hair and want it straight, a keratin treatment is the healthiest way to do that. You can use a straightening brush or flat iron or even a blow dryer and hair brush, but without a keratin treatment, it will not last and those methods absolutely will damage your hair. If you want healthy and long-lasting, smooth hair, a keratin treatment is a surefire way to do so.

Important Features to Consider

Keratin treatment should do several things well. Here’s what to consider when selecting a keratin treatment for your hair:

  • Daily. While it may not be a single, traditional “treatment,” per se, putting keratin into your hair daily (or at least every few days) will set you up for a lot healthier hair. Because your hair loses keratin every day, why wouldn’t you add more back in every day? The daily treatments are perfect for your hair’s health, which means they will make it shiny, less likely to break and may even smooth it some. But without the heating element (and the additional ingredients that contribute to the straightening), it won’t be permanent. A daily treatment that you wash out will undoubtedly make your hair healthier … While it’s in your hair. But without “fusing” it, it’s a temporary fix. That’s not to say it isn’t good for your hair; in fact, it may be better for your hair overall – heating potentially means heat damage, after all. And if you put it in before you use the flat iron or blow dryer, you may see extended benefits, including protection from heat damage. But if you’re wanting the full, long-lasting benefits of a keratin treatment, it will probably mean a more expensive, more in-depth treatment that you do once every few months, not daily.
  • Brazilian blowout. A Brazilian blowout and a keratin treatment have essentially the same result: both coat the outer layer of your hair with keratin to smooth and remove frizz. In fact, depending on who you talk to, a Brazilian blowout is often referred to as a type of keratin treatment. The difference is all in the intensity. A traditional keratin treatment usually goes a bit deeper in its efforts and is generally more intensive. It will be a more deep-conditioning treatment that tames the curls and minimizes more of the volume than a Brazilian Blowout. If you want to keep your curls, a Brazilian Blowout may be your best bet. The good news, though, is that if you’re doing it at home, you get to pick how you’re going to style it. You have a bit more control to try new things than you would at a salon so a keratin treatment can still let you keep your curls bu controlling your styling and sealing tactic.
  • Good other ingredients. Keratin is the ingredient that will rebuild your hair, so you’ll want a treatment that has a lot of it. If there are other ingredients that are more “filler” you’ll notice this by the ingredient list, sure, but often times you’ll even see these other ingredients on the label. Argan and Moroccan oils, for example, are pretty well-known for hydrating and softening your hair and for hair that suffers dehydration, this is a quality addition to the keratin treatment. This brings us to another feature you’ll want to consider, though.
  • Not-so-good other ingredients. For several hair products, you’ll often find that more is better. That is not always the case with a keratin treatment, however. If you hear anything bad about other ingredients, it will undoubtedly be about the formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is the ingredient that will break down unruly behavior in your hair and smooth it out. It is incredibly effective but it’s a probable carcinogen and that’s obviously concerning. Even if the formaldehyde isn’t listed in the ingredients, it can still be released by preservatives while heating. (Some of those ingredients are: quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, polyoxymethylene urea, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, bromopol and glyoxal.) Formaldehyde is undoubtedly a dangerous ingredient and you will, of course, want to be careful with anything with it included. But there are alternatives and you can get treatments which expose you to less than others. Just be conscientious in your homework before purchase.
  • Overnight hair masks. As you may expect, a keratin hair mask is one that is used with the specific intent to protect your hair. Not only will they have the keratin to replenish your hair’s protein, but they’ll include hydration, yes, but also nutrients that will strengthen your hair and make it better able to withstand any torment you give during your regular styling. Often times masks will be intended for nighttime use and that means you don’t need to worry about styling it with the mask wet or how to dry the mask on your hair or anything of the sort. It will dry in your hair overnight and you’ll see a notable boost in your hair’s appearance and the protection from the damage you do in the morning.
  • Higher concentrations. You may find there are some much more tempting keratin treatments that are more reasonably priced, but keep in mind that you will always get what you pay for with keratin treatments. If you’re purchasing a keratin treatment that is priced well under what its competitors are, then you’re very likely looking at a lower concentration of keratin. Of course, a keratin treatment that is only 2% keratin is less expensive than the one that is 50% keratin. You may have to dig a bit to find your percentages but once you do, you won’t be surprised when you compare percentages to price tags. If, for what you need it for, you’re okay with a lower percentage, don’t spend more than you need. Get the product you need, not the one with the price you like.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a keratin treatment and how does it work?

A keratin treatment is a way for you to replenish your hair’s naturally occurring keratin. It will come in a liquid, gel, or cream and you’ll place it directly onto your hair and work evenly through each strand from root to tip. That, in itself, is good for your hair’s sheen and overall health, but it will wash out if you stop there. If, however, you choose to apply heat to the product while it is in your hair, the keratin will become more permanent and fuse to each of your strands and will not come out as you wash or style. Most commonly, the keratin is fused in with a flat iron or a blow dryer (depending on how you want to style your hair). The additional keratin will then add to the shine and softness of your hair. It will also go a long way to smoothing the frizz and de-tangling.If you opt to use the keratin treatment in conjunction with heat, it will maintain the straight appearance for months, making your hair more manageable the whole time. If you choose not to use the heat and straightening methods, you’ll need to keep treating your hair, but it will give you a lot more freedom.

Can keratin damage your hair?

Keratin is a hugely beneficial addition to your hair and will definitely not damage your hair. Keratin treatments can have formaldehyde in them, though so you’ll want to make sure that you’re either not getting the treatments frequent enough to allow the formaldehyde to damage your hair or you’re finding a treatment that doesn’t have any of these damaging ingredients contained within. The good news is that home treatments are much less likely to have such strong ingredients. (The bad news is that this means you may not get have the exact same results as you would from your salon.)

In addition to the potentially damaging components added into your keratin treatments, you will often be using your keratin treatment in conjunction with pretty intense styling methods. So while the keratin itself won’t damage your hair, if you’re using it to straighten your hair, then you will still have to contend a bit with the flat iron. Since the keratin is best fused to your hair with heat, you’ll have to make allowances for the potential heat damage.

Is a keratin treatment good for hair growth?

Keratin will fill in the holes in your hair and strengthen it, which may make you think that of course it will make your hair grow. However, you may never actually see that difference in hair growth for a pretty simple reason. The harsh effects caused by the heat used in the treatment may be reducing the amount of keratin in your hair – and the treatment is simply replacing that which is lost, not building additional. Therefore, you should be careful with a traditional keratin treatment to make sure you’re not just “breaking even” on the overall keratin in your hair. You can minimize further loss if you’re losing your hair due to your harsh styling methods, but unless you stop the harsh treatment, you’ll just be treading water, not gaining or losing anymore.

Keratin applied in ways other than a traditional treatment, however, will definitely make your hair thicker and more lush. The fewer breaks in your hair, obviously the longer it grows. If you want to put a daily treatment in your hair without adding the heat of straightening, there is a better chance of keeping your strong hair healthy and allowing it to grow.

How long does a keratin treatment last?

Your hair will keep a healthy shine for upwards of a few months after a keratin treatment. If you’ve used the treatment to straighten and smooth curly hair, then it may only last as little as six weeks. Some of the determination of length does depend on you; both your hair type and how you treat your hair. If your hair behaves well and you adhere to the rules your stylist provides, you have every reason to expect the keratin treatment to last between eight to twelve weeks.

If you’re planning on a “daily” keratin treatment to manage your daily hair struggles, then you can typically expect it to last a few days between applications to maintain a healthy shine and smooth edges in your style. Even if it is called “daily,” you will often use it only when you’re styling or washing so that term will really mean “every few days.”
