Coconut water is higher in sugar and certain electrolytes, while “coconut milk is higher in healthy saturated fatty acids”, says Dr. Mukta Vasishta, H.O.D. Coconut milk contains lauric acid, a medium-chain fatty acid that might have a positive effect on serum lipid and cholesterol levels in men and women(1).

A study was conducted on 60 healthy people for 8 weeks. For 5 days a week, they were fed coconut milk porridge, and their cholesterol levels were tested. The researchers found that the “bad cholesterol” (LDL) levels of the participants considerably decreased and “good cholesterol” (HDL) levels increased. The study concluded that coconut milk did not have a negative effect on lipid profiles (2).

What Are Some Healthy Coconut Milk Recipes?

1. Coconut Shrimp Curry


For The Marinade
  • ½ kg large shrimp (peeled and deveined)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
For The Sauce
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 medium onion (chopped)
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tablespoon ginger (minced)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric
  • 2 teaspoons coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon curry powder
  • 410 grams diced tomatoes
  • 385 ml coconut milk
  • Fresh cilantro for garnishing
  1. In a bowl, mix the shrimp with all the marinade ingredients. Cover the bowl and leave it in the refrigerator.
  2. Heat the oil in a pan.
  3. Add the onions to the oil and sauté for a few minutes till they are translucent. Add the ginger, garlic, salt, pepper, coriander powder, turmeric, and curry powder. Cook for a minute or two.
  4. Add the tomatoes (with the juice) and the coconut milk. Stir well and bring this to a boil.
  5. Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Add the marinated shrimp (with its juices) to this mixture. Cook for a few minutes till the shrimp is cooked well.
  7. Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot with rice.

2. Coconut Milk Chocolate Mousse


  • 2 cans full-fat coconut milk
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 4 tablespoons sweetener (maple syrup, coconut nectar or honey)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt
  • 100 grams dark chocolate
  1. Pour the coconut milk into a bowl and whisk it well.
  2. Add the cocoa powder, salt, and vanilla extract and whisk while adding the sweetener.
  3. Whisk this mixture for a few minutes until it starts to thicken.
  4. Once you get the desired consistency (thick but pourable), pour it into your serving glasses or dish and leave it in the refrigerator to set.
  5. After a few hours, top it with chocolate shavings and serve.

2. Allergies

It may lead to allergies. If you are allergic tree nuts, experts suggest that you avoid drinking coconut milk since it may lead to a life-threatening situation.

3. Weight Gain

Coconut milk is high in fat, so if you are following a restricted diet and trying to lose weight, it may not be for you.

Coconut oil is the answer to ALL your problems.

At least that’s the running joke on Instagram, where you’ve probably seen posts like these:

Okay, maybe it can’t help with your relationship or finances—but I’ve gotta say, coconut oil IS pretty miraculous!

It is one of my most-recommended oils because:

  • It’s a saturated fat, which means it’s not prone to oxidation on the skin (which is associated with premature aging and brown spots).
  • It’s extremely shelf-stable and keeps for at least a year—if not many more! So it’s much better value than products with less stable oils.
  • It’s extremely versatile and can be used from tip to toe.
  • It’s even edible, and a powerful metabolism booster.

I can’t think of any other beauty ingredient that is so beneficial!

No wonder it forms the basis for Kopari, the California-based skincare line that recently arrived at Sephora.

I’d already purchased their Coconut Melt, but Kopari recently sent me a few more things to try from their Coconut Multitasking Kit—the perfect intro to the brand.

Here’s what you need to know:

Kopari Coconut Melt.

The “hero” product of the line is Kopari’s Coconut Melt. Nothing in here but 100 percent organic coconut oil. Yes, you could buy a cheaper version at the health food store. But this one is superior because it’s super-smooth, with none of those annoying gritty bits, and cold-pressed to keep its essential vitamins, nutrients and fatty acids intact.

That’s why I think higher-quality coconut oils like this make excellent face oils. You’re not only getting hydration, but also protection from free radicals that age the skin. Plus, its antibacterial properties can be helpful for acne. Although everyone is different when it comes to oils, you might be interested to know that coconut oil is not actually comedogenic!

I also love this product as a cleansing oil and non-toxic body moisturizer. (The latter is particularly important, because there is some evidence that topical oils can absorb and change your personal fatty acid composition!)

There are so many other ways you can use it: as a makeup remover, cuticle cream, hair mask, bath oil, shaving cream, stretch mark balm or oil-pulling treatment.

Kopari Coconut Sheer Oil.

If you’ve found plain coconut oil too heavy or greasy, Kopari Coconut Sheer Oil is the product for you. This is a lightweight oil serum for face and hair. It does have an oil texture, but it’s more like a dry oil—and much faster to absorb!

It also contains additional ingredients besides coconut oil. The shea butter supports skin repair and collagen production, while fruit extracts offer additional antioxidant protection. It has a subtle coconut and vanilla scent, but not to worry—the extracts are natural and phthalate-free!

This works beautifully as a face oil, and I’d also recommend it as a hydrating makeup primer. It really gets rid of those flaky bits you might experience from your acid exfoliator. You can use it on your hair as well, to tame dry ends or flyaways.

Kopari’s Coconut Body Glow is a coconut oil-based body illuminator that gives the skin a golden glow. Most shimmers I’ve tried are far from natural, but this one has a surprisingly minimal ingredients list, and is scented with a phthalate-free coconut gardenia fragrance. Yum!

The texture is a creamy gel, densely packed with fine shimmer that diffuses as you spread it out. It’s very golden, so might not be the best on pale, cool-toned skin; I think it looks better with at least a hint of tan.

Kopari Coconut Body Glow.

Once again, it’s a very multi-purpose product: you can wear it all over the body, or just to highlight your collarbones and shoulders. It also mixes well with body lotion if you want more subtle radiance. You can even put it on your face in place of highlighter!

I love that it does double-duty by leaving a thin coating of moisturizing oil on the skin. If you’re looking to enhance an end-of-summer tan, this would be my top pick!

Kopari Coconut Balm

Kopari Coconut Balm.

The Kopari Coconut Balm is an all-purpose, oil-based salve (think: the texture of a lip balm). Because it comes in a tube, it’s a travel-friendly way to enjoy your coconut oil on the go.

This stuff makes the BEST hand cream. I’m really blown away! It’s a great product to stash in your purse because you can use it on dry hands, cuticles and lips. And it works much better than straight coconut oil for these purposes, as it dries down quickly with no oily residue.

This is also great as a body balm, or as a treatment for any rough spots like the feet or elbows. Because it contains vitamin E and aloe vera, it can soothe skin after sun exposure, too. The scent is the same as the Sheer Oil, a natural coconut vanilla extract.

I’m going through this tube so quickly, I’m going to have to stock up again in the near future!

What Else to Try (and What to Skip)

There are a few more things in the Kopari line, and here are my thoughts:


  • Kopari Coconut Crush Scrub: This coconut oil and brown sugar scrub has healthy ingredients and replaces the need for body lotion!
  • Kopari Coconut Body Oil: This is a spray-on scented coconut oil with mostly good ingredients. Not as beneficial as pure coconut oil, but certainly more convenient to apply.
  • Kopari Coconut Rose Toner: Although this isn’t really a coconut oil product (it’s primarily witch hazel), it looks fine as an alcohol-free toner or makeup-setting mist.
  • Kopari Coconut Lip Love: This lip balm does contain some petroleum-derived ingredients, but that might not be a big deal if it’s only going on your lips. It has great reviews!


  • Kopari Coconut Body Milk: Although the coconut oil might have a slight stabilizing effect, I would avoid this because of the high sunflower oil content.
  • Kopari Coconut Face Cream: Ditto for this moisturizer, which is also high in sunflower oil.

In a nutshell (a coconut shell, obviously), I’m a huge fan of Kopari.

You might be a little hesitant about trying the products on your face. I get it—coconut oil does have a bad reputation for causing acne, which scares a lot of people away. For the record, I’m acne-prone and have never once had a problem with it. The latest research also refutes previous reports of its comedogenicity, so I wouldn’t live and die by those ratings!

If not, I’d at least encourage you to consider coconut oil for your body. That’s where it’s most important to use non-toxic products, since they’re going on the largest surface area, and you’re likely to use generous amounts.

With this brand, you’re getting an array of sophisticated, convenient and multipurpose products that go above and beyond what is available at the health food store. I’m really impressed!

The Verdict:

The Kopari Coconut Cleansing Oil is one of my favorite ways to remove makeup! I love that it works so quickly and easily – even on liquid liner and full coverage foundation. As you can see in the demo video, it literally just melts makeup away. I’ve been able to use it to remove eye makeup without any irritation. It leaves my skin feeling really soft and it comes off completely. There is no oily residue or filmy feeling left on my skin after I use it. I also love that it contains other ingredients, such as lavender essential oil, that are good for your skin.

Kopari Coconut Sheer Oil Review

There is a running joke on the internet that coconut oil is the cure all for any problem. Dry skin? Use coconut oil. Frizzy hair? Coconut oil. Bad credit? Coconut oil. Your house burned down, your husband left you, and your dog ran away? You guessed it… coconut oil. While I find skin care related humor to be amazing, there actually is a bit of truth to this. Coconut oil is incredibly versatile, and can be used for so many things! It can be used in cooking, for shaving your legs, as a hair mask, or even as a makeup remover. It really should be a staple in everyone’s home.

It seems like everywhere you go, you’ll find a new beauty product containing coconut oil. One brand in particular, that I’ve heard so much about, is Kopari. So I was so excited when I was able to get my hands on the Kopari Coconut Sheer Oil. Wondering if this will be the solution to all of life’s problems? Keep reading!

Be Careful About Using This On Your Face….

When reading the description of this product, Kopari recommends using it on your body, hair, and face. Please be cautious if you decide to use this on your face! Coconut oil has a comedogenic rating of 4 (out of 5) so it may clog your pores and cause acne. Now comedogenic ingredients are normally not a problem, but coconut oil contains high doses of lauric acid so it may cause acne for some people. I would recommend using only a little bit on a small area of the face and seeing how your skin reacts. If there’s no reaction, feel free to use it all over.

There are also claims floating around the internet that coconut oil works as a natural SPF. Don’t fall for it. Coconut Oil DOES NOT offer sun protection, so be wary and also put on a physical or chemical SPF.

There are a lot of awesome fruit extracts in this product (apple, banana, cranberry, melon, and apricot) that offer some awesome antioxidant benefits. They have also added shea butter for even more hydrating benefits.

Personal Use and Opinion

Not only does this product smell amazing, but it’s incredibly hydrating. I apply it to my legs right after I get out of the shower and they feel so silky and smooth within a few minutes. The packaging is a dropper as opposed to the traditional jar, so you always get the right amount of product with less chance of spreading bacteria. Overall it’s really a treat to use!

The biggest downside to the product is the price. You are paying about $45 for what is essentially just fancy coconut oil. While it smells amazing, and I love the packaging, in comparison to traditional coconut oil I can’t say that the results are better. My skin still feels great just using basic coconut oil I picked up at the grocery store. So if you have some extra cash burning a hole in your pocket, or you feel like treating yourself, I definitely recommend checking this out. If you’re on a budget, just get your basic coconut oil from the grocery store for less than $10. They are doing the same thing, just one has more bells and whistles.

Bottom Line

Coconut oil has been known to cause acne for some people, so be careful if you choose to use this product on your face. Start small, and do a patch test on your face to see if it will cause you to break out.

Do I think this product is a must have? No. If you have the urge to splurge $45 on 1.7 oz. of coconut oil by all means go for it! This is a great product, smells amazing, and I love the packing. But for those on a budget, you can get the same results with traditional coconut oil from your local grocery store.
