Lena Dunham Says She’s “Happy Joyous & Free” After Weight Gain

“I remember the impossible pain that brought me there and onto my proverbial knees,” the actress wrote on Instagram about her skinnier days.

Lena Dunham took to Instagram Tuesday to address her weight gain and body positivity.

The actress posted side-by-side photos of herself. She weighs 138 pounds in the first photo and 162 pounds in the second. “138 pounds, complimented all day and propositioned by men and on the cover of a tabloid about diets that work,” she began in the caption of the photo. “Also, sick in the tissue and in the head and subsisting only on small amounts of sugar, tons of caffeine and a purse pharmacy.”

She then addressed her most recent weight by writing, “162 pounds, happy joyous & free, complimented only by people that matter for reasons that matter, subsisting on a steady flow of fun/healthy snacks and apps and entrees, strong from lifting dogs and spirits.” In the most recent photo, she wears comfortable clothes and wears a big smile on her face.

“Even this OG body positivity warrior sometimes looks at the left picture longingly, until I remember the impossible pain that brought me there and onto my proverbial knees,” she concluded in the post. “As I type I can feel my back fat rolling up under my shoulder blades. I lean in.”

Dunham’s weight gain is likely linked to her battle with endometriosis. The actress has been open in the past about how her condition affected her, revealing earlier this year that she had a hysterectomy. “In addition to endometrial disease, an odd hump-like protrusion and a septum running down the middle, I have retrograde bleeding, a.k.a. my period running in reverse so that my stomach is full of blood,” she wrote in an essay for Vogue in February. “My ovary has settled in on the muscles around the sacral nerves in my back that allow us to walk. Let’s please not even talk about my uterine lining.”

After getting a surgery to free her ovaries from her rectal wall, she later learned that there were complications. She wrote that she was “in the greatest amount of physical pain that I have ever experienced.” She ultimately chose to have a hysterectomy, which involves the removal of the uterus and cervix.

Dunham later tweeted that she chose to share her battle with the disease for other women in similar circumstances. “Your body failing you is a loss that’s hard to explain and yet the amount of messages I’ve gotten from women in a similar predicament has been so overwhelming, loving and heartening,” she wrote on her personal Twitter account. “60 million women in America are living with hysterectomies and those of you who’ve shared your plight and perseverance makes me feel so honored to be in your company. My illness & choice was just that: MY choice. I’m not a doctor and I SURE DON’T CLAIM TO BE, but sharing this piece which delves deeper into the options women have. My decision was what was best for me and I hope this helps you make the best decision for you & your health.”

Lena Dunham Says Letting Go and Gaining Weight Made Her the ‘Happiest I’ve Ever Been’

Lena Dunham is putting less pressure on herself and reaping the mental health benefits.

The Girls star, 32, said that she spent too much of her life worrying about what people thought of her, and she decided to let go of that need.

“I’ve spent a lot of time in this life feeling like too much. Too hungry. Too anxious. Too loud. Too needy. Too sick. Too dramatic. Too honest. Too sexy (jk lol.) I was always sent the message, in insidious ways, that I took up too much room and demanded too much from life and sometimes gave too much to people who didn’t want any at all,” she wrote on Instagram.

Dunham said she now focuses more on what she wants.

“But something has changed, and it started when I realized: I don’t have to be *for* everybody, and that for the right people, my too much is just enough,” she continued. “My too much also means I have room for their too much and we can take turns too muching all over each other.”

And as a result, Dunham said that her body changed.

“At 32: I weigh the most I ever have. I love the most I ever have. I read and write and laugh the most I ever have. And I’m the happiest I’ve ever been,” she said. “Not the frail, precarious happiness of ‘things are going perfectly.’ The big, generous, jiggly happiness of ‘I think I’m finally starting to get the hang of this.’ Not too much… Just enough.”

The Camping writer had a tumultuous few years between major health problems that eventually led to a total hysterectomy, a split from her longtime boyfriend, singer Jack Antonoff, and a few social media firestorms.

Dunham’s body in particular has long been a public focus, to her frustration. At the height of her endometriosis problems, she lost a significant amount of weight and suddenly dealt with people shaming her for it.

“I was frustrated by it, because it really was evidence that as a woman in Hollywood, you just can’t win,” Dunham said in 2017. “It’s just so crazy because I spent six years of my career being called things like ‘bag of milk’ on the internet, baby cow, aging cow … I had all these people being like, ‘you’re a hypocrite, I thought you were body-positive, I thought you embrace bodies of all sizes.’ And I was like, I do, I just understand that bodies change.”

A year later, Dunham said that she was too sick at the time to realize that she harming her body. She posted before and after photos of herself from April 2017 and July 2018 to show the difference in her mental health.

“On the left: 138 pounds, complimented all day and propositioned by men and on the cover of a tabloid about diets that work,” Dunham captioned the post. “Also, sick in the tissue and in the head and subsisting only on small amounts of sugar, tons of caffeine and a purse pharmacy.”

She continued: “On the right: 162 pounds, happy joyous & free, complimented only by people that matter for reasons that matter, subsisting on a steady flow of fun/healthy snacks and apps and entrees, strong from lifting dogs and spirits. Even this OG body positivity warrior sometimes looks at the left picture longingly, until I remember the impossible pain that brought me there and onto my proverbial knees. As I type I can feel my back fat rolling up under my shoulder blades. I lean in.”

Dunham realized that she was “very sick but fetishizing my own body,” and that she’s now “happy, proud and healing.”

Lena Dunham Shares Candid Photo of Surgery Scars After Having an Ovary Removed

While several stars have opened up about their struggles with reproductive health and endometriosis, few (if any) have given as raw and candid a look at their journey as actress and writer Lena Dunham.

Though the Girls star underwent a hysterectomy (the removal of her uterus) at the end of last year, her endometriosis-related pain has persisted, ultimately causing her to have her left ovary removed on Tuesday.

In a brutally honest Instagram essay, Dunham shared a photo of her surgery scars, writing about her procedure and the misconceptions surrounding her disease, and clarifying how thankful she is for her access to health care.

Image zoom NBC/Getty Images

“A big lesson I’ve learned in all this is that health, like most things, isn’t linear- things improve and things falter and you start living off only cranberry juice from a sippy cup/sleeping on a glorified heating pad but you’re also happier than you’ve been in years,” she wrote.

“I feel blessed creatively and tickled by my new and improved bellybutton and so so so lucky to have health insurance as well as money for care that is off my plan. But I’m simultaneously shocked by what my body is and isn’t doing for me and red with rage that access to medical care is a privilege and not a right in this country and that women have to work extra hard just to prove what we already know about our own bodies and what we need to be well. It’s humiliating.”

Using her own story as a call to action, she continued, “My health not being a given has paid spiritual dividends I could never have predicted and it’s opened me up in wild ways and it’s given me a mission: to advocate for those of us who live at the cross section of physical and physic pain, to remind women that our stories don’t have to look one way, our pain is our gain and oh shit scars and mesh “panties” are the fucking jam. Join me, won’t you?”

Dunham is notoriously outspoken on social media. She was met with praise over the summer when she shared a side-by-side photo of herself at her thinnest and at her current weight, explaining that she’s much happier at 162 lbs than she was at 138 lbs.

We thank you for your honesty, Lena.

Lena Dunham recently shared side-by-side photos showing her 24-pound weight gain — and wholeheartedly embraced the change.

The 32-year-old “Girls” creator and actress wrote on Instagram that at her lighter weight of 138 pounds, she subsisted on “small amounts of sugar,” “a lot of caffeine” and a “purse pharmacy.”

She also cited the “impossible pain” that she experienced while struggling with eating disorders, which she wrote extensively about in her best-selling tell-all, “Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She’s Learned.”

Dunham goes on to say that after her weight gain, she is “happy, joyous & free,” and that she now only receives compliments from the right people, for the right reasons.

She also dubs herself the “OG body positivity warrior,” conceding that she sometimes struggles to accept her body just like anyone else.

The Golden Globe winner is still recovering from a hysterectomy in February. She has been open about her decadelong battle with endometriosis, publishing a post-surgery essay in Vogue called “Losing It,” which detailed her decision to remove her uterus.

Dunham had previously undergone eight failed surgical procedures to alleviate some of the chronic pain associated with endometriosis.

The actress has since become an advocate for women’s reproductive health and people with chronic pain, urging her fans to donate to Planned Parenthood and LGBTQ health clinics after her surgery.

Dunham has also found comfort in the community of women living with hysterectomies, which is nearly 20 million women in the U.S., according to the National Women’s Health Network.

She seems to accept her condition and all that comes with it.

“As I type I can feel my back fat rolling up under my shoulder blades,” Dunham wrote. “I lean in.”

Lena Dunham shows off incredible weight loss (and here’s how she did it)

The Girls creator recently turned to exercise to help her become physically and mentally fit and the results of her new regime were clearly visible when she attended Variety’s Power of Women in New York on Friday.

Dunham has credited A-list fitness guru Tracy Anderson with helping her tone up.

Anderson, who counts Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian and Madonna as celebrity clients, designed a bespoke fitness plan for the 31-year-old.

“With Tracy it’s not about getting everyone to look a specific way. It’s about getting everyone to feel strong,” Dunham recently told the Daily Telegraph.

Instead of weight loss being the main focus of her fitness plan, Anderson focused on building Dunham’s strength with specially designed exercise plans that weren’t heavily regimented.

“It’s a mix of aerobics, strength training and something that kind of resembles pilates but that she created on her own. What I like about it is Tracy really listens to your body and what you’re capable of. There’s no weird pressure. It’s honestly like if one day I have a UTI and I can’t jump up and down, she’ll say ‘OK, we’ll adjust that’.

“I have been about 30 pounds heavier and I’ve been about 30 pounds lighter, and it has never had an effect on my ability to find love or connect with people,” she said.

But Dunham explained that for her, one of the biggest motivations for exercise, was the positive impact it had on her mental health.

She credits exercise with helping to ease her anxiety.

“To those struggling with anxiety, OCD, depression: I know it’s mad annoying when people tell you to exercise, and it took me about 16 medicated years to listen. I’m glad I did.

“It ain’t about the a**, it’s about the brain,” she said.

But the Hollywood actress isn’t too hung up on regimes. For her, something as simple as a run can help her feel good.

“It was the last thing I wanted to do. When it became something that actually gave me pleasure, I was shocked. Also, endorphins are real. You run with someone for an hour, you feel pretty good. Running for an hour does not make you feel worse,” she said.

And for the New Yorker, it’s the effort that counts and makes her feel like she’s doing something good for her body.

“As I get older, I’m realising more and more that it doesn’t really matter if I’m good at it, it just matters that I try. My own effort, my own willingness, are becoming what’s appealing to me.”

Dunham has always been a passionate campaigner for body positivity and doesn’t conform to the conventional, unrealistic beauty standards usually pedalled by Hollywood.

She recently explained that her desire to show a body like hers in popular media, is one of the reasons she started acting in her own work.

“I knew that I wanted my characters to have a similar relationship to their own physicality that I do,” she explained, “which is that, despite a knowledge that my body didn’t necessarily meet a perfect norm, I’ve also always felt .”

However, her recent weight loss has seen her become the target of vitriolic criticism on Twitter, with people accusing her of “selling out”.

“It really was evidence that as a woman in Hollywood, you just can’t win,” Dunham said of the comments.

Lena stated that she was complimented for her body by the media, men, and fans. She noted, however, she feels much better now that she has a fuller figure.

“On the left: 138 pounds, complimented all day and propositioned by men and on the cover of a tabloid about diets that work. Also, sick in the tissue and in the head…” read the caption. “On the right: 162 pounds, happy joyous & free, complimented only by people that matter for reasons that matter, subsisting on a steady flow of fun/healthy snacks and apps and entrees, strong from lifting dogs and spirits.”

To see more of Lena, be sure to go see Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in theaters now.

Forget bathing suit Barbie. We love Lena Dunham in her green bikini.

Forget Barbie on the cover wrap of Sports Illustrated’s 50th annual swimsuit issue.

My personal bathing suit hero is 27-year-old Lena Dunham, who has done more to improve the self-esteem of young women in her scant career than the iconic plastic doll has ever done, despite a 55-year career that has seen her transformed from princess into pilot, police officer, paleontologist and presidential candidate.

In last Sunday’s episode of “Girls,” Dunham’s delightfully transgressive HBO series about an annoying quartet of self-involved, post-college adultlets, Dunham spent most of the 30-minute show, set in a resort town on Long Island’s North Fork, in a green string bikini. (HBO, unfortunately, did not provide a full-body image of Dunham in her two-piece, so we grabbed an image from the episode’s trailer.)

Dunham’s character, Hannah Horvath, did everything in a half-naked state: she went to the beach, she rode a bicycle, she swam, she danced and she curled up on a couch, all the while wearing nothing more than four small triangles of fabric.

What is so fabulous about that?

Dunham is the physical antidote to the poisonous Hollywood rule that a successful actress must appear to be on the verge of starvation at all times. Dunham is a pear-shaped chubette. She is zaftig. She is pleasantly plump. And she embodies the kind of self love we’d all like to see in our daughters.

On Sunday’s episode, Hannah hears a group of men making fun of her as she is bent over peering into a shop window. She turns around and sees it’s her old college boyfriend, Elijah, now gay, with three friends.

“Nobody was making fun of you,” says Elijah, played by the actor Andrew Rannells.

“I heard you,” says Hannah. “It’s a good thing I’m not as susceptible to criticism as I used to be.”

Think about the female stars of your favorite shows: Julianna Margulies of “The Good Wife,” Julia Louis-Dreyfus of “Veep,” Sofia Vergara and Julie Bowen of “Modern Family.” Not an ounce of visible fat on a single one of them.

Consider the weight of virtually any female movie star.

Thanks to Hollywood and the impossible physical ideal that’s elevated by the culture everywhere we look, our view of what an enviable female body looks like has become almost irreparably warped. The actress Jennifer Lawrence, with her tiny waist and curves, is held up as a feminist role model because she talks about how she loves food and refuses to lose weight for a role. (And good for her, but here’s what most young women think when they hear that: If she’s fat, then I am a cow.)

I have no idea how Dunham, who was born and raised in New York City, where women are subjected to just as much tyranny over body image as they are in Hollywood, has managed to free herself of the body dysphoria that plagues so many women, especially young ones.

But she has my gratitude, both as a woman, and the mother of a young woman, for being the sort of real life role model that Barbie, or even her living, breathing Sports Illustrated swimsuit sisters, could never be.

And because of that, I thought Dunham should have the last word:

For those of you desperate to own the bikini I wore for the entirety of tonight’s episode, it’s American Apparel. Oh wait, no one asked! — Lena Dunham (@lenadunham) February 17, 2014
