  • Inverted Pull Ups – A Smith machine bar would be set at hip height, and all Melissa did was lie down, hold the bar with both hands, and try to pull her upper body close to the bar. This helped shape her arms, shoulders, and chest.
  • Dumbbell Bench Press – Doing dumbbell bench press instead of using a bar helped her get the most out of this exercise. Her upper back, arms, chest, and shoulders were the main targets of this exercise. She did 3 sets of 12 reps.
  • Dumbbell Deadlift – Using the same dumbbells, Melissa did 3 sets of 10 dumbbell deadlifts to work her lower back and glutes. She concentrated more on maintaining correct posture with exercise.
  • Smith Machine Squats – Smith Machine squats were the best for Melissa as they canceled out any chances of low back injury. First, she would warm up with just the bar and then put 20 pounds on each end of the bar and do 3 sets of 12 reps.

In an interview with The Rolling Stones, Melissa McCarthy said, “I do think I worried about weight too soon, when it was only little-kid weight. I thought I battled weight throughout high school…. but I look at pictures of me as a cheerleader doing sprints doing gymnastics, lifting weights, playing tennis, and while I wasn’t reed-thin like some girls … I was a size six the entire time. So what on Earth was I freaking out about?”

After she moved to L.A., she started eating unhealthy and stopped exercising and gained 25 pounds.

Gilmore Girls

During Gilmore Girls, Melissa went on a crazy diet, which she says she will never go back to! She went on a doctor-supervised liquid diet and lost 70 pounds in four months but regretted it: “ I was starving and crazy half the time.”

2014

McCarthy had a surprisingly hard time finding gowns for award shows in the past.

“Two Oscars ago, I couldn’t find anybody to do a dress for me,” she told Redbook in 2014. “I asked five or six designers…very high-level ones and they ALL said no.”

The actress continued, “At a certain size, clothes just became tarp with a hole in it,” she said to The Guardian. “Everything was so mother-of-the-bride. I couldn’t ever put anything on and be like, ‘I love this!’ All I could say was, ‘Well, it’s on and it’s not a garbage bag.’”

Melissa McCarthy didn’t want to rush into weight loss in 2014. “I could eat healthier, I could drink less,” she told Rolling Stone in 2014.

“I should be learning another language and working out more, but I’m always saying, ‘Ah, I could get hit by a bus tomorrow.’ This attitude changed in 2015.

2015

The movie Spy was released in 2015. As soon as she got word she was going to star in Spy, alongside Jude Law, she started kicking up her exercise routine.

“The second I knew I was doing the movie, I started training with an amazing martial arts instructor,” Melissa told Life & Style.

Melissa McCarthy debuts her first fashion collection, Seven7 at the HSN Studios on August 13, 2015.

As a huge proponent of body positivity, Melissa McCarthy brought something instead of the usual fare found in the plus-size section (“it was always kind of like a grandmother or a 14-year-old hooker-type look,” she remarked), McCarthy embraced patterns and colors in sizes 4 to 28 — and ditched the idea that “plus size” should be its own category or section in the store.

2016

Melissa lost 50 pounds just by changing the way she thinks about her weight, according to Life & Style. “I truly stopped worrying about it, I think there’s something to kinda loosening up and not being so nervous and rigid about it that, bizarrely, has worked” she told the magazine.

Melissa also attributed her weight loss to, well, not doing much of anything at all: “No trick, nothing to tell, just super-boring life,” she told ExtraTV in a 2016 Youtube interview. “You have to bring it real down, you don’t do anything fun, and you go to bed at 7:30—that’s the trick.”

2018

By 2018, Melissa McCarthy managed to lose a significant amount of weight (75 lbs) for her role in the movie “Life of the Party”.

In May 2018, when questioned by the Breakfast Club Podcast about losing the weight all naturally without surgery and why it took 5 years, Melissa said “I just thought, there’s got to be a way to not rush in, and felt like what’s the hurry?”. She also “stopped freaking out about stuff (celebrity appearances) stopped looking at the crazy things like Who Wore It Better.

Along with eliminating junk food, most meals Melissa ate had lots of organic vegetables, lean protein and only a small amount of complex carbohydrates. Her meal plan involved the following food items:

  • High protein intake: In an effort to reduce her intake of carbohydrates, McCarthy upped her protein intake. They could have included: cage-free chicken breast, cage-free eggs, wild-caught fish, and grass-fed beef. Because protein is the most satiating macronutrient – high protein diets can be very effective for weight and fat loss.
  • Moderate fat intake: McCarthy allegedly consumed a moderate amount of healthy fats while on her high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. If she restricted carbohydrate intake substantially, she might’ve consumed between 30% and 40% of her daily calories in the form of healthy fats. Examples of foods high in healthy fats consumed by McCarthy might’ve included: nuts, seeds, avocado, fish, eggs, beef, etc.
  • Low carbohydrate intake: Low carbohydrate diets are considered any diet in which less than 40% of calories are derived from carbohydrates. In the case of Melissa McCarthy, it is thought that calories from carbohydrates were well-below 40%. For some individuals, reducing carbohydrates can improve satiety (or feeling full), suppress appetite, and decrease food cravings.
  • Drinking lemon water: It has been mentioned that Melissa McCarthy managed to lose weight by drinking a big glass of lemon water each time she felt hungry. It is understood that drinking extra water and staying hydrated can combat hunger – as well as bolster metabolism. Furthermore, because water contains zero calories – it cannot cause weight gain. The lemon component can improve water flavor and may help with digestion.

But if you eat fewer carbs and more fats, your body will burn ketones for fuel, instead of glucose.

  • 2 ounces diced ham
  • 1 ounce natural shredded cheddar cheese

  3. Add the onions, green pepper, and diced ham and cook for 2 to 3 minutes.

  • 4 ¼ cups vegetable stock
  • 1 cup canned coconut milk
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper

Instructions:

  1. Cook the chopped bacon in a skillet over medium-high heat until crisp.
  2. Remove the bacon to a bowl using a slotted spoon then reheat the skillet and add the cauliflower florets.
  3. Cook the cauliflower for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring often, then pour in the vegetable stock.
  4. Bring the stock to a boil and cook until the cauliflower florets are tender.
  5. Add the coconut milk and Dijon mustard then season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Turn off the heat then puree the soup using an immersion blender until smooth.

Dinner: Lemon Herb Baked Salmon

Servings: 6

Ingredients:

  • 3 pounds boneless salmon fillet
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and pepper

  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 large lemon, sliced thin

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with foil then spray with cooking spray.

The 47-year-old star is down around 75 pounds from beginning her weight loss journey. Her secret? Following the ketogenic diet, which puts a limit on your carbohydrate and glucose consumption while upping your fat intake. People who follow the keto diet get about 75 percent of their calories from fat a day, about 20 percent from protein, and the rest is the small amount of carbs. The keto diet works by putting your body into a state where it exclusively burns fat.

This type of diet doesn’t work for everyone (so definitely talk to your doctor or nutritionist if you’re looking to try it), but it has certainly worked in favor for Melissa. She looks freaking amazing—and says she feels better, too! “It may be the best thing I’ve ever done,” Melissa said. “I feel amazing!”

Besides changing up her diet, Melissa also credits her weight loss to an attitude change. “I truly stopped worrying about it,” she said. “I think there’s something to kinda loosening up and not being so nervous and rigid about it that, bizarrely, has worked.”

While Melissa is feeling great and flaunting her new look effortlessly, she does have opinions on how much attention she’s gotten about it. In an interview with Refinery29, she said, “The thing is, if that is the most interesting thing about me, I need to go have a lavender farm in Minnesota and give this up. There has to be something more. There are so many more intriguing things about women than their butt or their this or their that.”

  • Day 7 (Sunday): Flexibility. Around 45 minutes of yoga to improve flexibility and enhance recovery.

Sleep & recovery: Melissa McCarthy is said to focus on getting proper sleep and recovering from her workouts.
