Mila Kunis is very open about her strict “Black Swan” diet. She lost 20 pounds in 5 months and weighed 95 pounds at 5’4 so she looked like a ballerina. She said she didn’t starve herself but also didn’t do it in the healthiest way possible. She also has also made it very clear that she wouldn’t recommend this diet to anyone. She would only eat 1,200 calories a day and smoke a ton of cigarettes. She wouldn’t encourage anyone to do but since then has quit smoking.

In order to lose all the weight while simultaneously training to ‘fake’ being a ballerina she put in a lot of effort. She first subscribed to a food service that would deliver her healthy food. Then she trained for three months to learn to be a ‘fake’ ballerina as she told Howard Stern on his show. Other than that she also exercised 5 hours a day seven days a week. Sounds intense huh.

Her daily workout regime is with celebrity trainer Brian Abercrombie. She workouts out three times a week unless she has to prepare for a movie role then she increases it to five times per week. Her trainers uses a training system called P.A.S.E (Power, Agility, Strength and Endurance). He believes this is the best way to workout as the focus is on the entire body rather than one part. The workout comprises of six movements done in circuits for 40 minutes with no rest. These movements are walkover pushups, mountain climbers, TRX row, bootstrapper squats, stir the kettle and medicine ball slam.

During her pregnancy she continued to stay fit but with other exercise regimes such as yoga and pilates. She also loves the outdoors and goes jet skiing in the summer and snowboarding in the winter.

But a new interview with actress Mila Kunis in Harper’s Bazaar indicates that fast weight loss (in this case for a role) can sometimes result in fast weight gain — in all the wrong places.

Already lean, Kunis dropped 20 pounds in order to play Natalie Portman’s ballerina frenemy in “Black Swan.” At 95 pounds, Kunis says “I was muscles, like a little brick house, but skin and bones.”

Unfortunately, when she gained the weight back, Kunis says it ended up in completely different places.

“All the weight that left my chest went to my side hip, my stomach,” she told the magazine.

Andrea N. Giancoli, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, says redistributed weight isn’t uncommon after drastic weight loss (and weight gain).

“What often happens with extreme weight loss and when you lose weight very quickly is that you lose muscle tissue,” she says. “Unfortunately, when we gain the weight back, it comes back as fat.”

And that fat tends to show up wherever you’re genetically predisposed to get it.

“Some people store fat in their bellies, others in their thighs or their breasts or their buttocks,” she says. “Wherever you typically store fat, you’re going to see it go back there.”

What’s more, fast weight loss usually affects your metabolism, slowing it down so your body will burn the calories it gets more efficiently.

“You turn down the fire of your body furnace,” she says. “But when you go back to eating normally again, that furnace is still turned down to low, therefore you gain weight more easily and you gain it as fat, unless you’re really diligent about not overeating and exercising.”

If you’re dieting, Giancoli advises you shoot for losing 1-2 pounds a week, which gives your body opportunity to adapt to the weight loss and minimizes the loss of lean tissue and muscle.

As for celebrities and their weight-related ups and downs, she says they’re often a perfect example of what not to do.

“Celebrities are great Petri dishes for us in a way,” she says. “They demonstrate what happens with extreme weight loss. We’ll hear that so-and-so lost 20 pounds in 20 days and we’ll see her all thin and gorgeous. Then a few months down the line, she’ll have gained all the weight back because she did it too rapidly. And we blame the celebs, not the ridiculous diets. But really, it all comes down to human physiology and biology. Your body doesn’t like it when you lose weight that fast.”

Mila Kunis is getting honest about how she achieved her dramatic weight loss for her role as a ballerina in Black Swan.

The 32-year-old actress appeared on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM show on Tuesday, when she talked about how she got the part of Lily in the critically acclaimed 2010 film. Kunis says she Skyped with director Darren Aronofsky prior to nabbing the role, who sought her out after seeing her in the comedy, Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Kunis had never had any previous experience in ballet, but trained for three months in order to “fake it.” Kunis acknowledges that she got “crazy thin,” as Stern puts it, weighing about 95 pounds.

“I had to look skinny in order to look like a ballerina,” she explains. “You fake it. So, the best way to fake it is to unfortunately look like it.”

The Bad Moms star says she smoked cigarettes and went on a 1,200 calories a day diet to lose the weight.

“I never watched what I ate . It was one of those things, for the first time in my life, I got a food delivery service,” she recalls. “And I’ll tell you this — I’m not promoting this at all — but I used to be a smoker, and so I smoked a lot of cigarettes and I ate a limited amount of calories.”

Kunis says she has since quit smoking, and calls it the “best decision” she’s ever made in her life.

Though her struggle eventually paid off. Kunis was nominated for her work in the dark drama for Best Supporting Actress at the 2011 Golden Globes, but she says she felt no pressure during awards season. The actress recalls sneaking alcohol during the Oscars and happily taking shots.

“At this point I had a routine on my way to the awards show, like, ‘Shot of vodka in the car, woo hoo!'”

Kunis says getting acting accolades has never been important to her.

“I love what I do but I don’t need to win,” she explains. “Like, I just need to work.”

Talking to SELF, Biel explained how the superstar couple stay on top of their fitness with some mum-dad workouts.

“I actually love mommy-daddy workouts, they’re the best. It doesn’t always happen, but it’s so nice to have a partner when you’re doing a workout. It’s something my husband and I really enjoy doing together—we both are workout enthusiasts. When we can, we make it happen.”

In the spirit of our previous 18 things about Israeli actresses we adore (Gal Gadot and Yael Grobglas), we are expanding the series to include all Jewish actresses. We’re expanding the series for two reasons: one, technicalllllllly they could be Israeli if they made aliyah, and two, we make up our own rules (and we really wanted to write about Mila Kunis).

Read on for 18 things you may not know about the one and only Mila Kunis, who rose to fame at age 14 on That ‘70s Show. She’s currently starring in A Bad Moms Christmas, which opens today, but from everything we’ve read, she definitely does not seem like a bad mom.

1. She and husband Ashton Kutcher literally lived out their movies about friends with benefits (she starred in Friends with Benefits with Justin Timberlake, he starred in No Strings Attached with Natalie Portman): They thought they could keep things “casual” and it would be totally fine. Clearly, they didn’t take to heart the lessons of their own films.

2. Funny enough, Natalie Portman, according to Mila, is “the one person in the world that both Ashton and I have kissed.” 😘😘

3. Mila and Natalie starred together in Black Swan, the 2010 psychological horror film where they both played ballerinas, but Mila said she is a terrible dancer: “I have two left feet. I have no rhythm.” After finishing the movie she told W Magazine, “I will never dance again. It was the hardest thing I’ve done.”

4. She has two kids with Ashton Kutcher: daughter Wyatt Isabelle,3, and son Dmitri Portwood,11 months. She speaks Russian to her children; she plans on raising them bilingual (and apparently Ashton is learning too!).

How Mila Kunis Got Fit for Friends with Benefits

Mila Kunis is sexy, sassy, smart and clearly devoted to her roles; she famously shed 20 pounds to play a prima ballerina in Black Swan. But just how did she get that bod prepped to bare it all in those-ahem-super steamy love scenes with Justin Timberlake in her new movie, Friends with Benefits?

Enter celebrity trainer Brian Abercrombie of BODY MAXX, who boasts a slew of professional athletes and high-profile stars on his fitness roster. He trained Gerard Butler to kick some major butt in 300, and I think I can speak for any woman how ah-may-zing he looked. There’s no doubt Abercrombie knows his stuff when it comes to all things fitness.

For the past year, Abercrombie has been working with Kunis on a training system called “P.A.S.E” (power, agility, strength and endurance). “The focus is rarely on a specific body part but on the body as a whole,” Abercrombie says. “The rest usually takes care of itself.”

For Friends with Benefits, Abercrombie increased Kunis’ workouts from three days per week to five, complete with well-balanced meals of low glycemic carbs, proteins and essential fats.

“There was a joke in the script about her having no butt. I was determined to make them re-write it,” he says. “I don’t know if they did, but her butt looked good.”

While I don’t personally have friends with benefits, I was totally pumped to learn how to benefit my own body with Abercrombie’s workout and even more excited to be able to share those secrets with you.

You’ll Need: A box/step or other raised surface, a TRX Suspension Trainer, a dumbbell, an olympic bar and a medicine ball.

How it Works: This workout combines strength and endurance, consisting of six movements done in a circuit for 40 minutes with no rest.

STEP 1: Walkover Pushups

How to do it: Start in a plank position with both hands on a box, step or other raised surface. Step off with one hand moving to the floor and one hand remaining on the box. Do a full pushup and then return to the first position and alternate to the other side. Complete six reps on each side.

Tip: If you’re a beginner, try these on your knees.

STEP 2: Mountain Climbers

How to do it: Start in a plank position and then pull one foot up and underneath you so that your knee is at chest level. Alternate foot position rapidly, as if running in place. Complete six reps on each side.

Tip: Keep your butt level and don’t bounce up and down.


How to do it: Grab the handles of your TRX (palms turned inwards) and walk down into an inverted prone position. With your back straight and ribcage up, pull your hands to your ribcage from the extended position. Complete six reps.

Tip: You can also lower a bar on a smith machine or a squat rack, climb underneath and do the same thing.

STEP 4: Bootstrapper Squats

How to do it: Take the handle of a dumbbell in both hands so that they are in an overlapping baseball bat grip. Straighten your arms and forward fold, keeping your legs straight. With both your arms and legs straight, set your elbows on your knees and maintain contact throughout the motion. As if dragging the weight, drop your butt toward your heels and bring the lagging weight up and under your chin. Still with us? That is one rep. Complete six reps.

Tip: Consult this video if you still need help.

STEP 5: Stir the Kettle

How to do it: Hold an olympic bar with both hands and place one end of the bar on the floor into a corner of a wall. Raise the other end of the bar up to chest level and lean into it slightly, still holding it with both hands. Make a big full circle, as if stirring a large kettle (hence the name). Complete six reps in each direction.

Tip: Use a towel so that you don’t damage the wall.

STEP 6: Medicine Ball Slam

How to do it: Hold a non-bouncing medicine ball with both hands over your head. With arms fully extended and feet hip-width apart, slam the ball into the floor. Drop as you go into a full deep and proper squat and catch the ball as it comes off the floor. Bring the ball back to the raised position. Complete six reps.

Tip: If you don’t have a medicine ball, a tough basketball or soccer ball will help you learn the movement. Make sure you slam the ball a few inches in front of your feet so the ball doesn’t rebound and hit you in the face.

To prepare herself to look stunning in the movie, Friends with Benefits, Mila consumed a clean and balanced diet. Her diet was a blend of complex carbs, proteins, and essential fatty acids. So apart from the extremity of her regime for her role in that particular movie, Mila normally works out about 3 times a week with a personal trainer. She ups that to 5 days a week when preparing for a role, like that of her one in “Friends with Benefits” where she and Justin Timberlake shared a lot of steamy skin baring scenes. She enlisted the help of celebrity trainer Brian Abercrombie, the man who whipped Gerard Butler into shape for his Adonis like role in the kick ass action movie 300. Apart from the time she spends in the gym Miss Kunis likes to be active outdoors, jet skiing in the summer and snow boarding in the winter. Although it would sound to most of us that she follows a fairly regimented fitness routine, Kunis claims to have quite a relaxed, non obsessive approach to her diet and figure compared to most other celebs.

Sticking to a diet of mainly low glycemic carbs (oatmeal, brown rice, sweet potatoes), protein (chicken breast, fish) and essential fats (omega 3’s like flax oil, fish oil) keeps Mila in great shape all year and she takes pride in her abilities to make healthy meals in the kitchen claiming she “can make anything out of leftovers.” An because she takes such a healthful approach to her diet and workout the majority of the time, she isn’t afraid to splurge on foods she likes on occasion, claiming that dark chocolate and wine are one of her regular indulgences.
