An expert opinion on Miley Cyrus’ frankly impressive daily exercise routine
Fresh from her breakup with Australia’s favourite Hollywood hunk Liam Hemsworth (that is, if you don’t count his brother, Chris Hemsworth…), Miley Cyrus is celebrating not only her newly-found single status but also her incredibly toned physique on Instagram.
Miley has been a long-time advocate for a vegan and mostly plant-based diet (we asked an expert to rate that too), but it’s her daily commitment to Pilates and yoga that piqued our interest. And by the looks of her core, it’s clearly working for her.
Her chiselled ‘Ninja Turtle’ abs (Liam’s words, not ours) coupled with seriously long and lean limbs make her the poster girl for the “Pilates-bod”, an aesthetic that’s rising in popularity in the fashion industry especially, thanks to the super-toned likes of Victoria’s Secret model Georgina Fowler, P.E. Nation founder Pip Edwards, Ashley Olsen, and Jesinta Franklin and blogger Elle Ferguson. Miley found a love for Pilates back in 2013, and has been devoted ever since – even going so far as to building a private Pilates studio in her Malibu home.
Mari Windsor, the L.A-based Pilates instructor who takes credit for Miley’s toned legs, told People that during her personal sessions with the singer “We don’t just do a couple of moves… It’s at least a half an hour of working out … You have to learn how to not just tighten up your tummy but actually pull your tummy in to your lower back as much as you can.” Want abs like Miley? Mari has news for you. “Just doing 40 crunches a day isn’t gonna do it for you.”
But it’s not just reformer machines and plants that keep Miley in such good shape. She incorporates Ashtanga yoga, which is often referred to as the “strong yoga”, into her daily workouts – practising for up to two hours every day, according to Harper’s BAZAAR Australia. Miley has made no secret of her need for her daily yoga practise, posting in 2016 to her Instagram “Gotta do yoga not for my body but for my mind! DO YOGA or GO CRAZY!”. Something that benefits the mind and body? Sounds right up our alley.
To get an expert’s opinion on Miley’s daily exercise routine, we asked fellow Pilates devote Anna Brine, who is the Pilates Studio Manager at Sydney’s One Hot Yoga and Pilates, to weigh in on the performer’s Pilates/yoga mix, and if us mere mortals could get a similar ripped physique following Miley’s lead…
What aesthetic effect does Pilates have on the body, if practised regularly?
You can typically tell a ‘Pilates bod’ – Miley is a perfect example, just take one look at those abs! Pilates creates a different physique to that of other training styles, such as weights or Cross Fit etc. The essence of Pilates is to develop more lengthened, lean muscles as opposed to shorter thicker muscles. I often say, ‘you’ll find muscles you didn’t know you had’ and it’s true – we focus on the deeper muscle layers before targeting the more superficial layers, it’s incredible how we’re able to sculpt a dream bod.
Is Miley onto something by mixing her Pilates and Ashtanga sessions?
I think she’s all over it! At One Hot we offer a mix of Pilates and yoga because they truly complement each other, it really is the perfect balance… Through practice, it’s clear Miley has figured out what works best for her which is why she does it all! I couldn’t imagine living a lifestyle such as hers without the mindful benefits of yoga. Ashtanga is a vigorous and disciplined practice, which challenges all layers of body AND self.
Is it possible, or even safe, to replicate Miley’s exercise routine?
Miley has said she practices Pilates daily, which to some that might sound like a stretch (pardon the pun) but it’s because you can. It’s an extremely passive and totally sustainable form of exercise which is why it’s proven it’s here to stay, unlike other exercise styles that come and go. While we appreciate the importance of flat abs and a perky peach, there is a strong focus on injury prevention and stabilisation, and for someone like Miley who needs to be physically fit to perform, Pilates i ideal.
The more you practice, the quicker and more enhanced the results. I always recommend taking a one-on-one session with a qualified instructor before jumping into a group setting where possible – there are no two bodies the same and this will just ensure you’re gaining the best results specific to your goals and any pre-existing injuries, aches or pains. Pilates can be pretty technical but once you get it, you GET IT!

B) Using their crap-tons of cash to hire the world’s best trainers and nutritionists to make sure they look good and stay in shape.

What Type Of Workouts Does Miley Do?
Miley takes Pilates classes regularly under the instruction of Mari Winsor. While traveling, she uses Mari Winsor’s workout dvds including the pilates lower body dvd and pilates abs dvd.
Pilates is a good form of exercise for developing body awareness, improving posture, strengthening, and enhancing flexibility. It is low-impact, lower intensity, and generally very safe. Women tend to like it because they can often focus on strengthening the core and glutes, two areas almost every women wants to “shape up.”
Now here’s the kicker, Miley does these Pilates classes 6 times a week!
Now in case you’re wondering if you need to do Pilates 6 times a week to get those results, my educated answer is a resounding no.
While you can get away with doing Pilates six times a week because it is fairly low intensity, that doesn’t mean you need to in order to get similar results. Alternatively, you could add another type of training all together for similar results with less time spent exercising.
How Ordinary Women Can Get Miley Cyrus’ Results:
For those who are unable to take one-on-one Pilates classes with Mari, she’s made her dvd programs available where you can follow along.
Women tend to flock to Pilates because they use words like “tone,” “slimming,” “shaping,” and the like. While Pilates, yoga, and other similar forms of exercise are all wonderful in their own rights, my (admittedly biased) opinion is that most women should still include some higher resistance strength training.
Heavier resistance training, either on its own or in combination with Pilates, Yoga, or other forms of exercise will strengthen and “tone” a muscle much faster than low intensity exercise. This allows women to train 2-3 times a week and still get the same (or better) results.
While some women fear this will make them “bulky,” resistance training done properly will NOT result in too much muscle, but the right amount for whatever a woman desires as a woman can always tone her resistance training down according to her needs. I would argue that resistance training is the fastest way to a lean sexy body most women want.
Miley Cyrus has stated she follows a gluten-free and lactose free diet, and that those are the reasons she has lost weight rather than anorexia.
For those who don’t know, gluten is a type of protein found in certain grains like wheat, rye, and barley. Individual’s with Celiacs do not tolerate gluten and some people have a mild sensitivity to it. Gluten can be an irritant to the GI tract in sensitive people and it’s been purported that removing it would thus allow for a reduction in inflammation and potentially enhanced health.
Books like the G-Free Diet have popularized the gluten-free approach and many celebrities have been jumping on board. Doctors promoting more natural approaches to health like Dr. Mercola have also long encouraged the reduction or elimination of gluten and most grains.
With regards to lactose, it is a type of sugar found in milk products. Those whom don’t produce the enzyme lactase cannot properly digest it also leading to digestive disorders.
So reducing gluten and lactose seem to be prudent for those who are sensitive to them for health reasons, but does it lead to weight loss or is it recommended for everyone?
Gluten Free Diet Controversy – I CAN’T Believe This!
While this article from US Weekly explains how experts have “slammed” Miley for her gluten free diet, closer examination reveals something a little different.
What’s being said is that a gluten free diet may not be necessary for everyone, gluten free diets can actually lead to weight gain from increased nutrition uptake (a good thing), and that gluten free diets have been associated with nutritional deficiencies.
While I won’t argue with the technicality of those points, let’s look at what’s really being said.
Gluten Free Diets aren’t need for everyone: Yes, but gluten-containing diets aren’t needed for anyone. While I don’t think everyone must follow a gluten free diet for either health or fat loss, technically speaking gluten and gluten containing foods aren’t necessary for human health so a person can do just fine without them.
Gluten Free Diets can lead to weight gain in those with Celiacs: Yes, by increasing nutritional absorption. This would be a “healthy” weight gain. Weight loss via a gluten free diet would likely be an indirect result of other things like better food choices.
Gluten Free Diets have been associated with nutritional deficiencies: Yes, but only when people substitute gluten containing foods for crappy alternatives. The nutrients found in wheat, the most common gluten containing food people eat, can easily be replaced by other foods MUCH richer in those nutrients like greens, beans and lentils, vegetables, fruits, and meat.
Is gluten free healthy?
Done properly, in my opinion (I’m not a registered dietician and am no way telling anyone how to eat) I would prefer a gluten free diet most of the time. I don’t strictly eat gluten free as most people can tolerate it well enough in small amounts, and the thing to remember is that gluten is just one of many dietary components that could or could NOT lead to health issues.
Eating gluten free doesn’t mean one has to buy all these expensive specialty gluten free products. Nor is it a free ticket to eat a bunch of crap in place of gluten.
One of the biggest mistakes people make when going gluten free is to assume “gluten free = healthy” and then going overboard with a bunch of unhealthy foods all in the name of avoiding gluten. Instead, it’s much healthier (and cheaper) to eat quality whole foods like brown rice, quinoa, beans and lentils, and or just other non-starchy foods like fiberous vegetables, fruit, and protein in place of gluten containing grains.

I also like a lactose reduced or free diet as lactose can cause digestive issues in many people. If you still like your dairy, try including some greek yoghurt or kefir with active cultures. Cultured dairy often has far less lactose. Cultured dairy like kefir is also an excellent source of beneficial bacteria referred to as probiotics. Probiotics have been shown to play a role in everything ranging from immune system health, skin appearance, and even weight gain or loss!

But Miley is also passionate about social issues. In 2014 she launched The Happy Hippie Foundation, a nonprofit organization that advocates for homeless youth, LGBTQ youth and other vulnerable populations. She is also a vocal supporter of animal rights. Miley follows a vegan diet for both ethical and health reasons, and she promotes her lifestyle on her social media platforms and during media appearances.

According to LiveKindly, Miley decided to stop consuming animal products in 2014, when her dog, Floyd, was killed by a coyote. She is an active animal rights activist, and was even honored with the Celebrity Advocate Award by the Animal Rights National Conference, the world’s largest and longest-running animal rights gathering, which has been meeting since 1981.
The vegan diet excludes all animal products, like meat, poultry, fish, dairy, and even honey. The Vegan Society has defined veganism as “a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.” Miley certainly extends her veganism into other aspects of her life besides her diet, having expressed her support for vegan clothing in the past.
On a vegan diet, you can eat:
- Vegetables, all types, including starchy ones such as potatoes, rice, and corn
- Fruits, all types
- Grains, all types
- Protein-rich plant-based options such as beans, lentils, chickpeas, and tofu
- Nuts and seeds, particularly those that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as walnuts
- Fortified plant-based milk, such as soy, almond, and cashew milk
How She Actually Eats
Miley has shared photos of her vegan meals and snacks on her Instagram. From the photos, we can see that she loves eating clean and cruelty-free meals, including green smoothies, pita wraps (stuffed with veggies, lentils, and avocados, of course), vegetable stir-fries, and avocado sushi rolls.
While she has stated that she went vegan for health as well as ethical reasons, Miley is not afraid to indulge on occasion. At her wedding in 2018, the reception was filled with vegan fare such as vegan truffle mac and cheese, vegan fried chicken, and vegan dumplings. For dessert, guests were treated to vegan banana pudding and vegan vanilla cupcakes. And of course, the vanilla wedding cake was cruelty-free as well. She has also been spotted buying vegan and gluten-free snacks.
No matter what she’s eating, it’s clear that Miley prioritizes her food being free from animal products above all else.

According to INSIDER, Miley is an avid practitioner of Ashtanga yoga, an especially challenging style of yoga that emphasizes core strength and proper breathing. She has also been practicing pilates since 2013 and at one point even installed a pilates studio in her home. Miley’s former fitness instructor, Mari Winsor, has reported to Harper’s Bazaar that Cyrus would work out for at least half an hour a day.
What We Can Learn
While you don’t have to be a vegan like Miley, it’s easier to stick to a diet if some aspect of it is personally meaningful to you. Using her love for animals as motivation, Miley has maintained her vegan diet for five years and has even converted her husband, Liam Hemsworth, to the cause!
A few journalists have attempted Miley’s diet and exercise regime, with varying results. Lauren Schumacker from INSIDER attempted to eat and train like her for a week and found herself feeling deprived by the end of the challenge (but she did love practicing yoga and pilates). Another journalist from PopSugar attempted the same challenge and claimed that she “felt clearer, open, and more receptive to my body’s cues, wants, and needs by the end of the week.”
According to a report done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most Americans don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables, so it’s not a bad idea to incorporate more plant-based foods into your diet. As for fitness, take advantage of the numerous free resources online to reap the benefits of pilates and yoga practice.

Take a quick glance at Miley Cyrus’ Instagram account, and you’ll be treated to a long list of reasons why people are interested in her health routine. The singer, who hasn’t worn the bottom half of a top since her Bangerz era (no hate, just facts), is very well-known for her figure. Most notably, her “ninja turtle” abs (as ex-hubby Liam Hemsworth once referred to them).

And while it’s clear Miley has a naturally tiny frame, the artist does follow a strict diet and fitness plan to maintain that toned bod. According to Harper’s Bazaar, Miley has avoided gluten and dairy since 2012. Reportedly, she chose to cut them both because of intolerances, along with a desire to lose weight (not sure what weight she needed to lose, but okay).
A couple of years later, she adopted a vegan diet. When it comes to Miley’s workout schedule, specifics are a little difficult to come by. Some articles say she completes two hours of Ashtanga yoga, six days a week. But her Pilates instructor told People that her workouts are at least half an hour long. What’s clear, however, is that she trains most days and usually sticks to Pilates and yoga. Turns out “just being Miley” takes a lot of discipline. Probably a little more than the average person needs.
As a curious creature and a glutton for a fitness experiment, I wanted to know more. So, I sought out to trial her health routine for a week. But first, I chatted with a couple of experts.
“A vegan gluten-free diet can be suitable when exercising frequently as long as it is well planned and appropriately supplemented if eaten long term,” Clinical Nutritionist Zoe Morosini told me. She then recommended designing meals around protein sources like gluten-free whole grains nuts, soy and legumes.

Accredited Practicing Dietitian, Emily Hardman, added: “This style of eating is very limited and needs to be well planned to ensure that it is nutritionally adequate. I only recommend following gluten-free diet if you have a diagnosis of coeliac disease or diagnosis of gluten intolerance.”
Informed and a little afraid, I dove into the challenge. Here’s how it went.

My energy fell off a cliff
By day two, I noticed my energy levels were lower. Could it have been placebo? Maybe. But I’d also dramatically changed what I was putting into my body, overnight (As I’m sure you’ve gathered, I’m not usually vegan or gluten-free). Working out became a chore. I started cutting corners and giving up early. Still, I committed to six days of yoga and occasionally paired it with Pilates, walking or weights training. Some days I trained for two hours, others for 30 minutes.

The cravings were real
It shocked me to discover that I didn’t miss eating meat (a plus for the planet, and my experiment). What got me was the lack of gluten. When I felt exhausted and unsatisfied, I’d fantasise about sourdough toast. Eating out sucked, too. Your average café doesn’t have a lot of gluten-free and vegan options, that’s for sure. I ate lots of salads, and chickpeas.
Although I approached the challenge with complete dedication, my resolve faded quickly, and I failed at my diet a couple of times. After a few tequilas on Saturday, I ate a slice of margherita pizza (and felt like my soul had returned to my body). Then during the week, I accidentally ate bread. No, really! I thought I’d bought a vegan and gluten-free loaf (it cost one million dollars). While bragging to my roommate about my delicious “non-bread”, I read the packaging correctly and realised it very definitely contained gluten. I blame the diet for my oversight.
It was a challenge, mentally
On the third day of this challenge, I woke up hungry and moody. I felt angry that I was so low in energy. I was annoyed by the effort I needed to put into my meals (more ingredients, longer preparation time). I was bored with doing yoga every day. This feeling of frustration didn’t go away until the diet did.
I didn’t find it effective
The thing with bodies is that they’re not all alike. So, while this approach may be Miley’s gluten-free bread and dairy-free butter, the experience was not a positive one for me. The diet wasn’t something I could maintain; my fitness felt like it was regressing, and my mood was terrible. I also didn’t notice any physical changes – aside from a little bloating from the veggie and legume increase.
And while I’m sure I would have lost weight in time, I’m really not interested in looking thin and feeling awful. After all, the end goal here is to look and *feel* great. One really doesn’t work without the other.

Miley Cyrus is vegan since 2014. She doesn’t consume animal products like meat, seafood, eggs, milk and other dairy products, and honey. In an interview, she said, “By not consuming animal products over the years I have protected myself from preventable diseases.”
According to The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, vegans tend to be slim and have lower blood cholesterol, blood pressure, and heart disease risk (1). A plant-based diet is also helpful and recommended for people with diabetes (2).
The Animal Rights National Conference also honored Miley with the Celebrity Advocate Award for not just “talking the talk but also walking the walk.” She loves green juice, vegan snacks, vegan dessert, vegan meat, and plant-based protein sources like tofu and legumes.
- No Gluten And Dairy

Miley Cyrus is off gluten and dairy products since 2012. Lactose intolerance, lactose maldigestion, and practicing veganism prevents Miley from consuming dairy products. She says that going gluten and dairy-free prevented weight gain in the late teens.
A dairy-free diet also helped Khloe Kardashian lose 40 pounds.
- No Alcohol And Drugs
Miley Cyrus had days when she would smoke pot and take ecstasy. But in a recent interview with Billboard, she said, “I’m not doing drugs, I’m not drinking, I’m completely clean right now!” She is off alcohol, smoking, and drugs since 2017. Miley loves hiking and kayaking. These are great calorie burners and help improve muscle endurance, boost metabolism, and tone the body. Who can forget hours and hours of practice for sold-out concerts and then performing live in front of millions of people?
