Many of us start the New Year off with the same old resolutions, and lots of times those resolutions include losing weight and getting fit.
While some people see this through and lose the weight they vow they are going to, I think it’s safe to say that most of us have fallen off the wagon completely within a month or less!
But what if we could actually get paid to lose that weight? I don’t know about you, but I really think that a money incentive would certainly motivate me to stick to my goals!
In case you weren’t aware, there actually are a couple of ways you can lose weight and get paid for it.
So if you have major plans to lose weight this year and you’re worried that you won’t be able to see them through, you might want to look these options over and really consider trying one or more of them out.

5 Ways To Get Paid To Lose Weight In 2020
1 – Healthy Wage
Healthy Wage is another site that lets you join weight loss games with the promise of a financial reward if you meet your goals. I am actually using this one myself right now!
This one also requires an entry fee, but just like DietBet, the cost is not too bad — about $25 per month for the team challenges, and you can choose how much you want to bet if you prefer to bet on yourself and not join a challenge.
Healthy Wage has a handy calculator on their site that tells you what your prize will be based on how much you want to lose and how much you’re willing to bet.
There are lots of testimonials on the site showing people who have won $1,000 and more along with losing a substantial amount of weight.
If you meet your goals, you can get paid in cash — check or Paypal — or you can opt for credit at Amazon. For more details on how it works, you can check out my review of Healthy Wage or just .
2 – DietBet
You can earn money for losing weight with DietBet by betting on yourself to lose the weight.
There are different competitions going on at all times — some short-term and some long-term — and you can choose to either create your own betting game and invite people to join in, or browse the site and find betting games you want to join.
All participants have to throw a little money into the pot, and at the end of the bet the people who have met their goals get to split what’s in the pot.
You can join bets for as little as $10, and if you are one of the winners, you’ll be paid via Paypal. For more details on how DietBet works, you can read my review of DietBet here.
3 – Walgreen’s Balance Rewards
If you have a Walgreen’s near you, you can sign up for their Balance Rewards program and earn rewards for your healthy habits.
They will give you points for various healthy tasks you complete like weighing in, achieving a health goal, exercise, not smoking, etc.
You can connect your Balance Rewards account to your Fitbit and MyFitnessPal to make the tracking easier for you.
While Balance Rewards doesn’t actually pay you cash, the points will translate to savings on your Walgreen’s purchases which is more or less the same thing, especially if you shop at Walgreen’s often (and many people do as this is a major drugstore chain).

4 – RunBet
This one is similar to DietBet and HealthyWage (listed above). The goal is to make running a habit with a money incentive to help ensure you stick to it.
All you have to do is choose a game with goals that suit you, and set a running schedule and stick to it for several weeks. If you stick to your schedule, you’ll win a portion of the jackpot for the game you joined. This will equal the bet you put in plus a profit.

5 – Achievement
This is an app you can download to your Android or Apple device and get paid cash for doing healthy things like tracking your steps, eating right, getting good sleep, and so on.
You can connect Achievement to several different popular apps like the one you use for your Fitbit, Strava, Garmin, MyFitnessPal, and more.
Payments are made via Paypal or direct deposit. Every 10,000 points you earn is equivalent to $10 in cash.

5 Legit Ways to Get Paid to Lose Weight in 2020
With the new year in full swing, many people want to lose weight and get fit. There are hundreds of weight loss success stories, but for every success story is another of someone struggling to reach their goal. Motivation is key when trying to lose weight. That said, money can be a great motivator. In fact, you even can get paid to lose weight.
Yes, you read that right! There are several ways you can lose weight and get paid for it. If you want to lose weight this year, this post will show how you can make money on the side while reaching your goal.
There are quite a few apps and programs that will actually pay you to lose weight. This is a great way to have more incentive and accountability to lose weight.
How to Get Paid to Lose Weight
Getting paid to lose weight may sound shady, and that’s understandable. The weight loss industry is filled with pills and other unhealthy options that promise that you can lose weight fast.
However, losing weight isn’t quick or easy. It takes work and motivation. Frugal Rules founder John Schmoll lost 100 pounds on Nutrisystem and key for him was staying motivated when he wanted to give up so many times.
What’s a better motivator than money? In fact, there are apps that pay you to lose weight.
Most of these apps tie a dollar amount to your weight loss to incentivize you to reach your goals. Essentially, you bet against yourself to lose weight and if you reach your goal, you “win” your bet.
Most of the apps that pay you to lose weight pay via check or PayPal. Some also offer credit on Amazon. If you want to get fit this year, here are five ways to get paid to lose weight.
HealthyWage allows its users to win up to $10,000 if they reach their weight loss goal. With HealthyWage, you can win money in several ways including:
- Losing weight
- Maintaining weight
- Referring friends
HealthyWage works fairly simply, and is one of the best ways to get paid to exercise. The weight loss calculator on their site estimates your prize, and it’s based on the amount of weight you want to lose. To get your estimate, enter your weight loss goal, how much you’re willing to bet, and your height and weight, and they calculate your prize amount.
If you struggle with motivation, HealthyWage lets you join a team challenge to connect with others who can encourage you on your weight loss journey. They do charge $25 per month for this feature. However, if you choose to lose weight alone, you only pay for the bet you place against yourself.
The average prize for goal achievers is $1,400, according to their website. HealthyWage is available to residents of the United States, Europe, Latin America, Australia, Canada, most of Asia, and the United Kingdom.
The way to win the $10,000 is to join the $10K Team Challenge. This challenge occurs once a year, lasts for three months, and costs $33 per month during the challenge.
To compete in the challenge, you must have a team of five people. Your weight must also be verified twice during each challenge you do.
You have three options to verify your weight:
- Video verification by yourself or with a partner
- Verification by a fitness or health professional
- Verification by Weight Watchers (if you’re a member)
The team with the greatest amount of weight lost wins the grand prize. If you want to get paid to lose weight, HealthyWage is a good option to consider.
With Dietbet, you choose from the different available challenges that best fit your needs. Like HealthyWage, you can bet against yourself or join a team and work together. The fee to join most of the challenges is $25.
However, the entry fees can vary from as low as $10 and as high as $100. The time period for the challenges varies from 1-12 months, depending on what type of challenge you select and with whom you’re doing the challenge.
Dietbet offers three standard programs to keep you motivated to lose weight. Those are:
- Kickstarter – lose four percent of your body weight within 28 days
- Transformer – lose ten percent of your body weight within six months
- Maintainer – keep your weight loss off for 12 full months
With each plan, Dietbet allows a roughly two percent allowance to account for daily fluctuations. Depending on the challenge you choose, the pool is split just once or a few times, so it’s possible to have multiple winners.

Before you begin, you have to go through the weigh-in process. This involves submitting two photos 48 hours prior to the start of the contest. One photo is of you standing on a scale in lightweight clothing. The other picture shows the scale’s readout with your weigh-in word on a piece of paper next to the scale.
The weigh-in word acts as the photo’s time stamp. Since it does change, make sure you check the app for the most updated weigh-in word.
After the contest is over, you have 48 hours to submit your end weight. Within 24 hours of the final weigh in, the winners receive points on their Dietbet accounts. You can apply the points to another challenge or you can opt to receive cash via PayPal.
However, some challenges offer full cooking sets instead of money to the winners so make sure you carefully check the prize for the challenge you select.
Stickk is similar to HealthyWage and Dietbet. You bet against yourself to lose weight, and you sign a “commitment contract”. This contract acts as your promise to yourself that you will try to achieve your weight loss goals. You can even invite friends or family to cheer you on.
Friends can see your progress, and can leave words of encouragement. You can view these in your account to help push through to your goal, which is particularly effective if you find yourself struggling.
Make Extra Money by Taking Short Surveys Taking short surveys in your free time can be an awesome way to earn extra money fast! The instant you finish a survey, Survey Junkie pays you in cash via PayPal. 6 Million users and an 8.9/10 Trust Pilot rating prove you can trust them.
You add an incentive to your weight loss goal by entering a “stake”. The stakes act as extra motivation to complete your goal. And if you would rather donate the staked funds, that is an option as well.
The one key difference between Stickk and the other challenge sites is that they do not collect funds upfront. You only pay if you don’t reach your goal.
4. Walgreens Balance Rewards
Do you live near a Walgreens? If so, you can sign up for their Balance Rewards program and earn rewards for healthy practices. For instance, linking a health device like a FitBit or app earns you 250 points. In fact, if you’re trying to lose weight, exercise is likely a part of your strategy.
Walgreens Balance Rewards offers you 20 points per mile you walk, jog, or cycle. And each day you weigh in and log your weight, you receive another 20 points. Keep in mind, though, that there is a limit of 1,000 points per month for these actions.

For every 1,000 points you earn, you get $1 off at any Walgreens location or online purchases. To earn points, make sure you’re logged into your Walgreens account when shopping and that your Balance Rewards account is linked correctly. The maximum amount you are allowed to use is 5,000 points, or $5.
While this isn’t a direct way to get paid to lose weight, using the Balance Rewards program is a good way to benefit from getting fit.
Achievement is an app that pays you for getting fit, and it’s available for both Android and Apple devices. You can earn rewards for a variety of tasks such as:
- Keeping track of your steps
- Eating right
- Getting enough sleep
If you have a Fitbit or track your steps already with an app, Achievement is a good way to get paid to walk. Even if you’re not directly trying to lose weight, Achievement is a good way to profit from your healthy living and habits.
The points you earn with Achievement are redeemable for PayPal direct deposits. Every 10,000 points you earn on the app is equal to $10.
How to Stay Motivated to Lose Weight
If you’ve ever tried to lose weight, then you know much of it comes down to motivation. Here are some ways to stay motivated to lose weight this year.
Don’t Do it Alone
Studies show that if you partner with someone else you’re more likely to succeed. Find someone to work with – a spouse, sibling, co-worker, or friend are all great options. Make sure to encourage each other and hold each other accountable.
If you don’t know someone that wants to lose weight, then an app like HealthyWage is a great alternative.
Make it Social
Don’t be shy about your weight loss goal! Share your goal with friends and family so they can encourage you. Social media is a great way to do this, and you can even post pictures so your friends see your progress.
If you pick a weight loss plan like Nutrisystem, they build this into their platform, making it even easier to share your goals and progress.
Pick A Plan that Fits Your Lifestyle
There are many weight loss plans out there so do your research. Select a plan that works with your lifestyle and specific goals. Using one that doesn’t fit with your preferences may only cause frustration and lead you to quit.
Celebrate Your Successes and Embrace Your Setbacks
Losing weight can be a long journey. Break up your goals into smaller chunks and celebrate each milestone. Recognize that you will experience setbacks but rather than quitting as a result, use them to challenge yourself. Work through them and keep pushing towards your goals.
Find an Exercise You Enjoy
Most likely, you will need to exercise to lose weight. There are many ways to exercise, so find what you enjoy and fits into your schedule. It can be something as simple as walking, or you can try something more vigorous.
The point is to find a form of exercise you like and that you can sustain long-term. Once you’ve done that, challenge yourself to exercise on a regular basis.
You may think it’s too good to be true to get paid to lose weight, but it’s not. Using the above apps that pay you to lose weight and offer legit ways to get fit and make, or save, some money in the process.

In my recent post on getting paid to walk, I briefly mentioned the other side of this make money coin – get paid to lose weight. Money is a huge motivator in this household. My husband and I could both stand to lose a few pounds. And with this being the season for eating, we thought maybe it could help us power through the holidays without surrendering to every piece of pumpkin pie or peppermint mocha thrown our way.
What are Weight Loss Challenges?
Weight loss challenges are exactly what they sound like: games in which you challenge yourself to lose a specific amount of weight within a set period of time. While we all know excess weight can affect everything from sleep to mental wellbeing to heart health and joint health. Our weight can impact every aspect of our lives. And while that should be enough to make changes, that just isn’t the case.
But money can change that! Several studies have shown cash incentives can not only motivate people to lose weight but also keep it off. And that’s what we’re talking about today. Online platforms that incentivize weight loss with cold hard cash!
How Do They Work?
Most weight loss challenges begin with a commitment – you’ll determine how much weight you are required to lose to win your challenge. On sites like HealthyWage and DietBet, you can choose from programs they’ve set up and buy in with the wager required.
You do need to put your money in the cookie upfront, but that’s the point! The fear of losing out on your investment gives you an additional push to stick to your committed goals. And studies have shown financial incentives help further weight loss.
These challenges may be personal or group-based, and may require you to lose a certain number of pounds individually or a percentage of overall team weight. You’ll have to do weigh-ins throughout to demonstrate whether there’s been any weight loss.
If you meet your goal, you are guaranteed to, at the very least, get your investment back. But because you will also be getting a cut of the bets of everyone who didn’t meet their goals, you will probably earn a little extra!
HealthyWage says they host “wellness challenges with cash prizes.” You can join a corporate challenge if one is being offered by your employer. Or, you can join team or individual challenge. Most people simply join an individual challenge in which your individual results determine whether you win or lose. That’s how I like it!
To discover how much you could win, HealthyWage has a prize calculator that asks for how much weight you’d like to lose (must be at least 10% of your current weight), your desired challenge time period, and how much money you want to bet per month. If you’d like to lose 60 pounds in six months, for example, you could bet $50 each month and walk away with between $389-$1209 if you win. (They’ll ask for you sex, height, weight, and waist size before telling you exactly what you could earn.) The prize money amount increases depending on how statistically difficult it is for you to lose weight.
If losing 10% of your weight – or a six-month challenge – is a little too big of a commitment to start, don’t run away just yet. HealthyWage also offers shorter challenges which run 90 days and require 6% weight loss.
HealthyWage conducts weight verification at the beginning and end of their challenges – these weigh-ins must be completed on video using either their app or uploading your own video to their system. You can self-report on a weekly basis. There are no monthly requirements, so how you lose the weight and cheer yourself or others on is up to you. (If you’re pregnant or undergoing bariatric surgery, you are not eligible to participate.)
Once you win, you’ll be paid via PayPal or a paper check after your challenge completes and you request your payout.
My husband joined a 6% challenge.
DietBet hosts two types of weight loss challenge “games” – one that runs for four weeks (called a Kickstarter) and another that runs for six months (called a Transformer). All Kickstarter games are about losing 4% of your body weight, and they encourage participants to think of these challenges as a way to drop those last few pounds or get toned for an upcoming event. The Transformer games require you to lose at least 10% of your weight and focus on measured, healthy weight loss. They also offer a Maintainer challenge for people to hold steady at their goal weight, keeping off the pounds they’ve lost.
There are many different challenges you can choose to join when you sign up for a DietBet game – they have different buy-in amounts, number of participants, and pot sizes – so you can choose one that best suits you. If you win the challenge, you’ll split the pot with all other winners.
You can also participate in more than one challenge at a time if you become a DietBet member. We had the option to become members for the duration of our first challenges. It may have been a one-time offer, but it cost $5 and would not renew after our challenge was over.
DietBet has a two-step photograph weigh-in process to check your weight when you begin and finish a challenge. If you choose to become a DietBet member, you can also do weekly weigh-ins and get feedback from their referees – and entered to win a weekly progress prize. If they believe there’s something unusual about your weigh-ins, you may be required to submit a video weigh-in instead. Transformer game participants can submit monthly weigh-ins to win monthly percentage weight loss goals.
How much you can win all depends on how much money is in the pot and how many winners there are, but DietBet says that Kickstarter winners earn, on average, 50% to 100% over their wagered amount. They say their average winner of a Transformer game earns $325 for winning each month’s goal or $175 for just winning the final month.
If you win your current game, the amount of money you win will be added to your account as equivalent points. You can choose to cash out by submitting a request for a PayPal payment or a paper check to be mailed. Unlike HealthyWage, DietBet will allow you to request a refund up to seven days into a Kickstarter game or up to 14 days into a Transformer game; additional exceptions may be made for refunds if you experience medical problems during your challenge.
Beyond being a health-conscious weight loss app, DietBet also ensures that you don’t earn back less than you bet if you win your challenge. That’s right, if the pot is split among so many winners that your payout is lower than your bet, they’ll forego their fee so you make your money back. Please be aware winnings will be different for every game depending on the number of participants, the size of the pot, the site’s cut and how many people don’t meet their goal.
Walgreens Balance Rewards
Walgreens has long been pushing their message that they want you to be healthy, and their Balance Rewards for healthy choices app certainly backs that up! Not only does their rewards card do all the typical rewards card stuff – rewarding you for store loyalty and your in-store purchases – but it also rewards you for making healthy choices in your life.
If you use their Balance Rewards app to log information such as your health goals, how much you’ve walked (or run or cycled), your exercise sessions, daily weigh-in, and more. You can earn points that you can later convert into savings on future Walgreens purchases. It may not be cold, hard cash, but is keeping cash in your wallet.
The app now links up to several popular fitness apps and devices. They’ll even reward you simply for tracking your blood pressure and blood glucose. Learn more at their program details page.
This was just the jump start we needed. I have long told myself, I needed to lose a few pounds but I have never really committed to it. My husband has just been saying, “Next week…” all year long. It was scary to have it written in stone, but it was very much needed.
However you choose to gamify your weight loss and make a little money along the way, make sure that you are approaching your weight loss challenge in a safe and healthy way. Your body will thank you for eating appropriately and not pushing yourself too hard! Minimize risk with a healthful diet and exercise that fits your experience level. Making small changes can add up to big transformations and could be the key to winning those big pots in a weight loss challenge.

It’s easy enough to make a New Year’s resolution. All you have to do is say it right? “I will not eat sweets.” “I will go to the gym five days a week.” “I will lose 20 pounds.” Even if you say it and don’t exactly do it for more than a few days, weeks or months, then there’s always next year right?

What begins with good intentions, though, becomes a matter of keeping yourself accountable and that can be a challenge as the year goes on and responsibilities pile up on top of errands. You can say, “I’m not going to eat any sweets,” but if you break down and indulge, who is there to stop you or make you feel better or remind you that tomorrow is a new day?”

If you want to lose weight, try:
DietBet. With DietBet, the premise is simple. Join an ongoing bet (or create your own with friends and family) that challenges you to lose a percentage of your weight over a period of time. To enter a bet, you pay a fee. If you lose the weight, you receive a payout. If you don’t, you lose your money. Since everyone’s starting weight will differ, the bets are based on a percentage of body weight lost, ranging from four percent (a one-month bet) to 10 percent (a six-month bet), depending on which game you join. Your starting and ending weights are verified by the DietBet team using photos and a secret word (so they know it’s you).
If you just want to get to the gym, try:
PACT. Similar to DietBet’s betting system, with PACT you’ll win money for going to the gym, paid by those who do not. Choose from three different PACTs—going to the gym, eating your veggies or tracking your food. You can commit to one or all three. You’ll submit pictures of your veggies, a log of your workouts or enter your meals and snacks to go toward your PACT.

If you want to organize a challenge on your own terms, try:
A closed Facebook group. Invite who you want, and set the challenge parameters to what you need for your challenge group. The rules are up to you, too. Janice Carnevale of Bellwether Events has been part of a weight-loss group on Facebook for more than three years. “There are folks all over the country participating. We have a moderator and a treasurer the competition round lasts nine weeks,” she explains. “At the start and end you send in photos of your feet on the scale with a secret word (to prove photo timeliness) and a full-body picture to the moderator. For the weeks in between, we use a Google form for weight tracking. It is $20 to join the group—sent via PayPal to the treasurer. At the end of nine weeks, if you have lost five percent or more, you split the pot with anyone else who did so as well.”
Carnevale likes that you can offer support, recipes and encouragement, or just vent about weight-loss challenges through the closed group. In addition, she says that, “The moderator posts the results in percentage form on a weekly basis. Results are not posted in the seventh and eighth weeks to keep the suspense of how many are in the running for the cash.”
With Friends or Family
If you want to make a game out of weight loss, try:
Playing bingo. Bella McCrudden, nutritional adviser, wellness coach and founder of NutriBelle, uses a bingo board with her clients to encourage healthy habits while having fun. “I love the idea of including healthy habits that don’t just revolve around weight loss, but that help to build in habits that will last to keep the weight off,” she says “By using a healthy habits bingo card every week for a month, and having that extra bit of challenge and motivation from your friends, you and your friends get to embed healthy habits for life, but also get that satisfaction of losing the holiday muffin top!”
How to play:
- Take a sheet of paper and draw a grid of five-by-five squares.
- In each square, write up a new healthy habit—something that’s challenging but not impossible or unrealistic. For example, don’t create a square that says, “workout for an hour at the gym every day” if you know that getting to the gym every day is unrealistic. Instead, break it down into three or four boxes that say, “walk to work three times this week,” “15-minute stretch session before bed” or “two-minute wall squat while brushing teeth.” Breaking your exercise each day into smaller, bite-sized chunks will help these tasks more easily become habits.
- Swap ideas and mini-goals with your friends until your bingo cards all contain the same tasks.
- Start the challenge together, ticking off boxes as you do them. Unlike normal bingo where you’d look to fill a straight line, aim to complete everything in the box by the end of your chosen timeframe. Take photos of your card and send to your friends to check in with your progress. Motivate each other to keep going!
- “It’s also a great challenge to do with friends who live farther away—so you get to keep in touch with them, and get fitter and healthier! Win, win!” McCrudden adds.
If you don’t want to take the lead, try:
Hiring a third-party professional. “One of the best ways to organize a weight-loss challenge is to have a third-party coach or professional to lead the challenge,” April Dearden, certified nutritionist and corporate wellness coach at New Normal Lifestyle, Inc., says.
“Having an expert to answer questions and keep the group motivated is important. If no one in the group can help overcome some of the obstacles that arise, you will usually end up with friends not following through to the end. It’s also good to have a third-party professional help with individual personal issues you may not want to share with your friends,” she adds.
Dearden also points out that the expert can take a lot of the guesswork out of where to start and how to implement a plan that works for everyone. Once the expert meets with the group of friends, he or she can understand the dynamics and goals of the group to better implement a plan that everyone can follow.
If you want a friendly non-monetary wager, try:
Betting chores or tasks. Nick D’Urso, a health coach and co-founder of The Nutritional Source, says. “One thing I encourage my clients to do is wager something of importance to build accountability. It doesn’t necessarily have to be money, but it’s important to set small goals to achieve the larger goal at hand. , the first person to lose five pounds has to drive the other’s children to school for the week.”
You can then increase the wager for the next 10 pounds and so on. The loser buys the winner a healthy dinner, or takes them out to the movies—really anything that makes you push to achieve.
“This really works great with all types of people. I have seen sporting event tickets wagered, carpools, house cleaning, et cetera. It’s fun and rewarding,” D’Urso says.
At the Office
If you want to lose weight with your co-workers, try:
Your interoffice messenger. Stay motivated with a weight-loss specific group chat on your office’s messaging system. Those who want to participate join the group and set the parameters.
For April Jimenez, the director of digital marketing at Huemor Designs, her office’s eight-week weight-loss challenge consisted of, “A $20 buy in, anytime someone gained a pound or more they needed to stick a dollar for each pound in the money jar (we’re up to about $200 now),” she says.
In addition, her company, “stayed motivated by having a weight-challenge-specific chat on our interoffice messenger where I would post the week’s results after the weigh-in. We also added some decent competition motivators and some good-natured trash talk and sabotage made it fun.”
A points system. Create a points system for common goals among coworkers. As the points add up, so do your chances of winning.
“We have three categories: workout, booze and sweets, Eric Brantner, co-founder of Scribblrs, explains. “Each day you can earn up to three points; one point for working out, one point for foregoing the booze and one for abstaining from dessert or sugary drinks like soda. We have a shared Google spreadsheet where we tally points at the end of the day and the goal is to accumulate the most points by the end of the contest.”
He believes this points system has been successful because he and his coworkers aren’t constantly weighing themselves and freaking out over a number that naturally fluctuates. Also, with three categories from which to choose, it makes things a bit more fair as there is sure to be a category that is easier for some than others.
For instance, one coworker might be able to easily hit five workouts a week, but has difficulty not drinking soda. Another might not eat a lot of sweets, but enjoys having a couple of beers in the evening, so in that way, everyone can focus on both strengths and weaknesses.
“I’ve worked out seven of the last eight days. Super proud of myself and my points!” he adds.

Cody Smith, 31, staked $1,000 that he’d lose 65 pounds in 10 months using HealthyWage, a platform where people place bets on their weight-loss efforts. Dieters can sign up individually, through a corporate challenge, or with friends. Payouts can reach upwards of $10,000, according to the HealthyWage website.
Those who don’t meet their goal lose the money wagered. Check Instagram or Facebook, and you’ll see thousands of posts from people who’ve credited HealthyWage, or DietBet, a similar company, for helping them lose weight.
According to HealthyWage co-founder David Roddenberry, the service is geared towards people who need accountability.
“The idea is that having an incentive will help you stick with it,” he tells Men’s Health.

Smith learned about HealthyWage after reading an article about hacks to earn extra money. He initially thought the service was a scam but was convinced by reading positive reviews.
“I was kind of at the point where I was tired of being overweight,” he says. Smith had already taken up running, and the bet motivated him to sign up for a marathon, too.
“I was definitely driven by the money,” he says.
Bets start at $100, but Smith gambled $1,000 on his success.
“I knew that I would need to wager an amount that would hurt me enough to lose,” he explains.
Smith signed up to lose 65 pounds, but dropped 75 by his last weigh-in. His rewards: $2,040, plus a marathon medal and tons of newfound energy.
Research heralds the benefits of incentive-based, weight-loss programs too.
People enrolled in incentive-based programs lost more weight in 16 weeks compared to those who didn’t have external motivation, according to a 2008 study published in JAMA. However, there were few differences between the two types of dieters after eight months, meaning the results may not last long.
Still, companies like HealthyWage provide two important aspects of weight loss: motivation and accountability, according to Dr. Hana Kahleova, M.D. and director of clinical research at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
“As health providers we should incorporate these components in these weight-loss programs,” she tells Men’s Health. “It would definitely put more pressure on people, which is a good thing, but may be a bad thing if someone doesn’t know how to do it .”
Dieters can check in with a HealthyWage coach for curated advice from a range of experts including doctors, behavioral economists, public health experts, and nutritionists according to their website. However, coaches are not medical professionals and shouldn’t take the place of a doctor or registered dietitian. Instead, the platform should be used to complement someone’s plan, says Roddenberry.

“It’s not meant to be the full service solution,” he says.
Not everyone who signs up for HealthyWage will consult with a medical professional or intuitively understand how to lose weight in a healthy, sustainable way. Then, there’s the concern that people may focus too much on the scale, says Kris Sollid, R.D. at the International Food Information Council.
“I think the idea that just simply using one number, like weight, as the determinant of success is unhealthy,” he tells Men’s Health.
But HealthyWage keeps many dieters focused on their goals. Smith says he avoided fads and stuck to the basics of healthy eating by trading fast food and soda for fruit, vegetables and lean protein. Get Paid to Lose Weight
Do you like the sound of being paid to lose those excess pounds? Well, the NHS have actually tried that with a weight loss scheme where patients get paid up to £1800 to lose weight.
Run by the external firm Weight Wins, the NHS scheme offered a variety of financial incentives for losing the weight. Anything from £200 for losing two stone in five months, to almost £1800 for dropping 10 stone in 21 months.
Weight Wins were already offering a diet programme to which anyone could sign up, for a monthly fee, and be rewarded for each pound they lost. However, if they failed to register a loss, they could end up just losing pounds from their pockets.
Although initial results were promsing, NHS bosses were not impressed enough to roll out the scheme after the pilot.
48% of participants had significant weight loss, that is lost 5% or more of their starting weight. Estimated mean weight loss at 12 months was 4kg.
Speaking in the Telegraph an NHS spokesperson said the results were ‘mixed’ and three quarters of people dropped out before the end of the scheme despite the financial incentive on offer.
The Weight Wins company was dissolved in 2016, so it seems unlikely that their programme was successful for paying clients.

Where and How Was the Scheme Trialled?
The scheme was piloted in the Eastern and Coastal Kent Primary Care Trust. Though there were hopes it would be rolled out across the country.
The Primary Care Trust paid £185 for every person who enrolled in the scheme, and all pay outs were covered by Weight Wins.
If weight loss targets were not met, slimmers didn’t receive financial rewards. Patients also had to show that they could maintain their new weight and not put the pounds back on!
The scheme was aimed at those who are overweight, rather than those who are obese or those who would benefit from surgery.
There were around 400 places on the programme which was heavily over-subscribed with around 2000 applicants.
Do ‘Pounds for Pounds’ Schemes Work?
Similar trials have been carried out in the USA. One study, published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, carried out a 16-week trial to see whether those who were motivated by a financial incentive were more likely to lose the weight.
Findings showed that those groups motivated by the prospect of a financial reward were significantly more successful than the control group who were offered no monetary reward.
Dietitian Lyndel Costain BSc RD suggests that “Whilst this scheme did show a positive outcome in the short-term, who knows how effective it would be in 2-5 years time, for example.
“Like all weight loss approaches, there will be a subset for whom this works well, but not for all or even the majority. Furthermore, we have to question whether people would be making the mindset changes required for long-term weight management or if they are just focusing on short-term rewards.”
Fast Food vs. Financial Reward
Publicity for the scheme drew fire from various media due to the increase in hospitals renting out space to fast food restaurants. Pop to your local NHS Hospital and you might well be able to pick-up a Burger King along with your prescription!
Critics say this runs contrary to bids to tackle the ever rising presence of obesity and obesity-related diseases in the UK. Furthermore, fast food is full of fat and salt, and something that healthy slimmers tend to avoid.
But whilst photos appear of a woman on a drip ordering at a fast food counter in Cambridge’s Addenbrookes Hospital, the National Obesity Forum suggest that the message seems to be that the NHS is “effectively endorsing” fast food, not weight loss.
Most hospitals have cleaned up their food offerings in recent years, though Costa Coffee seems to have survived in many locations It appears that the last surviving hospital based Burger King is at Addenbrookes, maybe because it’s going to cost £1 million to boot them out.

Important Note: Your minimum weight loss goal must be at least 10% of your body weight. For example, a 200 pound person would have to lose at least 20 pounds.
Your goal will include how many pounds you want to lose as well as the time frame (in months) in which you will lose them.
You also will set an amount that you want to bet per month. As you adjust all of the variables you will notice the prize range goes up and down based on your input.

To test this out, I entered a weight loss goal of 30 pounds in 9 months with a $50 bet monthly. My prize amount ended up being $500, or an 11% return on my “investment”.
HealthyWage uses “a proprietary algorithm” to calculate prizes so prizes might be different for 2 people entering similar information. I played around with different factors but it always presented a similar prize for me.
Just to be clear on how they’re calculating this, I’m putting in $450 ($50 x 9 months), and getting out $500 when I hit my goal — the $50 gain.
To me, that seems like a lot of cash to put at risk for just a $50 gain, but your numbers might look different AND there’s the motivation factor of NOT losing it too.

Making Your HealthyWage Bet
Once you’ve received your prize amount, you decide whether you want to place a bet. If you do, you will enter your credit card information.
You can choose to pay all at once or make monthly payments.
Verifying Your Weight
This is one point I was really curious about. What’s to stop people from entering an inflated “starting weight” and cashing in when the pounds miraculously melted away?
The way HealthyWage combats this is by requiring users to verify your initial weight before the challenge starts. (You will also do this at the end of the challenge to see if you hit your goal.)
There are two ways to do this:
- Download the HealthyWage mobile app (iOS | Android) and have one on their referees remotely witness your weigh-in.
- Make a short weigh-in video and upload it securely to the HealthyWage website.
The only equipment you need to use HealthyWage is a smartphone and a scale. There are no other weigh-ins during the process.
HealthyWage doesn’t track your progress and doesn’t include a way for you to track progress through their website or app.
Finish your Challenge
Your HealthyWage challenge concludes on the appointed date given. In order to win the prize, you just need to achieve your weight loss goal in the timeframe you set up.
As mentioned earlier, your weight will be verified at the conclusion of the challenge. If you hit your goal, you will earn the prize.
If not, you lose the money you wagered on yourself.
The Science Behind HealthyWage
Academic research at Harvard, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pennsylvania found that:
- Cash rewards can increase the effectiveness of weight loss programs.
- People are more likely to take action when their own money is at risk.
HealthyWage relies on two scientific rules about human behavior: incentives and loss aversion. In simpler terms, the company uses both a “carrot” and a “stick” to motivate participants.
Participants have “skin in the game” by having to wager real money on their weight loss success.
(Though tons of people sign up for gym memberships that they never use so in a sense they are losing money as well.)
There’s something about wagering money, though, that motivates people differently.
In fact, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that people who have a financial incentive to lose weight are five times more like to reach their weight loss goals than people with no money at stake.
How Do I Get Paid by HealthyWage?
Upon winning a challenge, you will earn HW points, valued at one dollar each. HW points will be added to your account by the evening of your prize announcement.
With your HW points, you can do a few things:
- Request a payout. (yes!!)
- Use HW Points to join a new challenge.

Is HealthyWage a Scam?
Many people have questioned whether HealthyWage is an ethical company or a scam. They are turned off by the fact that it resembles gambling. On the surface, HealthyWage seems to profit off the fact that the majority of people simply don’t stick with diets or fitness plans.
There are reasons why HealthyWage is a legit business, though. First, they have been around since 2009 so they have longevity. They weren’t formed just to profit off people. In fact, much of the money made off lost wagers goes towards payouts for other challenges.
(HealthyWage also makes money off sponsorships and partnerships and various fees, not just money from users who fail to hit their health goals.)
Co-founder David Roddenberry says that HealthyWage “success rates vary, with between 25 percent and 40 percent of participants actually winning their bets.”
“If 100 percent of the people lost the weight,” he added, “We would be absolutely thrilled.” (Though I’m sure that would hurt the cash flow of the company!)
Although HealthyWage’s model seems like a gamble, it’s different because participants have complete control of the outcome. They decide if they will put in the work and stick with their health plan.
The program is set up to offer higher prize payouts to people with large amounts of weight to lose, which can be hard to accomplish.

HealthyWage isn’t the only weight loss betting website that can earn people money. Following the success of HealthyWage, other sites have popped up that offer similar programs and other business models.

DietBet — Following a model similar to HealthyWage, with DietBet participants can earn money for losing weight betting on themselves to lose the weight.
RunBet — According to their website, RunBet hosts games to keep you committed to running. Place your bet, start running, and win. You can run outdoors, on a track or on a treadmill. You just need to sync your program with an approved GPS app.
StickK — Similar to HealthyWage, StickK pays people for losing weight. The difference between HealthyWage and StickK is their billing. With StickK, you don’t pay anything upfront. Participants are only billed the money they wagered if they fail to reach their goal. For some reason, that sounds even more painful!
Walgreens Balance Rewards – This program also allows you to earn points for healthy habits like linking health apps, exercise, testing your blood pressure, tracking your sleep and more. Balance Rewards points are also earned for shopping at Walgreens and using their pharmacy.

What Is DietBet—And Should You Try It?

DietBet is a social network-centric, app-based weight loss program where participants bet a certain amount of money—typically between $20 and $50—that they’ll lose a certain percentage of their body weight in a certain time frame. The people who achieve the goal get their money back—plus they split the money from those who don’t achieve the goal.
According to DietBet.com, more than 400,000 people across 90 countries have used the program to shed a combined 5 million pounds, with winners receiving more than $21 million in the process. Its popularity and proven track record for success are certainly enticing, but there are a few things you should consider before jumping on the DietBet bandwagon.

First, it’s helpful to understand why DietBet may be such an effective weight loss tool, and which types of people may find the most success with it.
For starters, there’s the commitment factor.
“There’s the hope that you will follow through on a behavioral change by committing to something,” says Dr. Ariane Machín, a clinical and sports psychologist who also specializes in eating psychology.
The aim with the DietBet process, says Machin, is that you would go from external motivators for change to internal motivators for change .
The specific goals and hard deadlines of DietBet can also provide a boost. The program offers two different challenges—the more popular four-week one where participants must lose at least 4% of their body weight in order to win, and a six-month one where participants must shed 10% of their body weight.
“Having structured goals helps you know exactly what you’re going for,” explains Chicago-based weight loss coach and personal trainer Stephanie Mansour. When comparing DietBet to a less rigid, more generalized goal of ‘lose weight,’ “there’s no guesswork involved,” she says.
Plus, the strict deadline of DietBet can incite “pressure in a positive way,” says Mansour. “It provides a sense of urgency” that can combat the procrastination that’s common with any type of difficult goal.
West Virginia-based Destiny Basil, who has joined three separate DietBet challenges since January, says the program helps her break down her goal of losing 100 pounds (which can be “so discouraging”) into smaller, more manageable chunks.
Consistently reaching those small goals adds up to big results. “I’ve lost 35 pounds so far,” she says.
This type of confidence boost can help kickstart a longer weight loss journey. “It could bring up your self-efficacy to say, ‘I know I can do this,’” says Machin.
Although DietBet will be a different experience for everyone, in general, people like Basil who are motivated by performance goals (e.g. hitting a certain weight, or jogging a 5K in a certain time) rather than learning goals (e.g. mastering the skill of deciphering nutrition labels) or fulfillment goals (e.g. finding a form of exercise that makes you happy) will likely find the most success with DietBet.
“It’s important to be in tune with what types of goals you are motivated by,” says Machin.
The money, of course, is another big incentive.
“A lot of us can be motivated by fear,” explains Mansour. “If money is really important to you, the thought of losing that can send you into fight or flight mode.”
And then there’s the social aspect. DietBet challenges are hosted by either the platform itself or by community members, and the size of each challenge ranges from dozens of people to several thousand. Participants are connected with others in their challenge via an online chat portal, where they’re encouraged to post regular updates on their own progress and cheer others on.
“You are around people who have similar struggles and goals and talk the same language,” says Machin. “This can make you feel supported and also encourage you to support others, which makes you feel good, too.”
Alabama-based Julia Steier, a personal trainer and fitness instructor who has participated in several DietBet challenges and hosted one herself in January for a group of 40-plus clients and friends, says this sense of camaraderie and community makes the program an effective, exciting way to kickstart weight loss.
“As an organizer, I got to celebrate when my friends were losing weight, and I was really happy for them when they met their goals,” says Steier.

But the strict goal-oriented structure that makes DietBet so effective for some folks could also create high levels of stress and anxiety for others.
During her second DietBet challenge, Basil reached her goal—but it wasn’t as easy as the first go-around.
“I became a little bit scale obsessive,” admits Basil, who hit a plateau midway through and then “dieted and hit the gym really hard” in order to lose 1.5 pounds in the last two days of the challenge. “It really stressed me out,” she says.
“I could see it setting up rigidity about food and exercise that may be hard to break,” says Machin. “It could disconnect you from natural signals about eating healthy.”
Some participants, like Alabama-based Lauren Greene, find the goal of 4% weight loss in four weeks to be unrealistic. Greene joined a DietBet challenge in January, and at the end of the four weeks, lost 5 pounds, which was 2.4 pounds shy of her goal.
“For me, that was not really a healthy weight loss,” says Greene, who compared it to Weight Watchers, which she’s tried in the past and encourages weight loss at a rate of 1 pound a week.
“I may try it again with the expectation that I might not lose the weight, but I would kickstart healthy eating and exercising habits,” Greene reflects.
Mansour considers this goal on “higher end of doable,” and Steier also feels that the 4-week window is “too short of a time period.”
The competition aspect of DietBet could also trigger unhealthy comparisons.
“People might take it too far and get too hysterical trying to beat others without learning good habits,” says Machin. “It could bring up guilt and shame if you’re not where you’re ‘supposed’ to be.”
Losing at DietBet won’t just set you back financially—it could take an emotional toll as well, says Machin.
If the failure is internalized (i.e. attributed to a shortcoming within yourself, like lack of self-control or laziness) rather than externalized (i.e. attributed to an outside factor, like a particularly busy schedule at work that thwarted your fitness plans), it could trigger negative self-talk that might make future weight loss more difficult and daunting.
“From my perspective, this is a short-term goal, and it’s not setting you up for a lifestyle commitment to that goal once the bet is over,” says Mansour. “It could backfire if you feel like you have to continue with DietBet in order to lose weight.”

Before beginning a DietBet challenge, Machin recommends setting learning and performance goals that supersede the specific weight loss goal.
This way, even if you don’t win the DietBet, you can still reap the rewards of achieving other goals, like developing healthy eating habits, or learning how to incorporate exercise into your weekly schedule, she says.
And if you try DietBet and learn that it just isn’t for you?
“Give yourself permission to walk away without shame,” says Machin. Also know: it isn’t by any means the only format or system you can use to lose weight, says Mansour.
