While our complexions may look soft, smooth, and blemish-free, without that tell-tale glow, we’re often left feeling as though our skin appears dull and lackluster. We reached out to board-certified dermatologist, and Skincare.com consultant, Dr. Elizabeth B. Houshmand (@houshmandmd), for some insight on what causes dull skin. Below, we share more about dull skin, including nine common causes for a dull skin tone and a few tips to help you brighten the appearance of your lackluster complexion.

WHAT IS DULL-LOOKING SKIN?

When someone is talking about dull-looking skin they are typically referring to skin tone. “Dull skin is usually used describe skin that lacks radiance or luminosity, that dewy look we all strive for,” Dr. Houshmand says. The goal for most is to have glowing skin that exudes radiance and appears bright. When skin is dull it looks lackluster and doesn’t reflect the light in the same way healthy-looking, well-cared-for skin does.

WHAT CAUSES SKIN TO LOOK DULL?

Dr. Houshmand noted that healthy skin is usually not dull, so there may be an underlying issue at hand. Now that you know what dull skin is, it’s time to figure out what’s behind that loss of brilliance. Below, we’re sharing a few common causes of dull skin to watch out for.

1. Dryness and Dehydrated Skin

Have you been skipping on skin hydration? Dry, dehydrated skin lacks the moisture it needs to look luminous. “Dry skin looks parched and loses it radiance,” Dr. Houshmand says. When skin isn’t hydrated, fine lines can be more pronounced, skin can look rough and skin tone can appear dull and lackluster.

2. Dead Skin Cell Buildup

Dr. Houshmand also notes that the buildup of dead skin cells on your complexion could be a cause of dullness. Just like dry skin, built-up dead skin cells can leave the skin looking dull since they don’t reflect light the way healthy-looking, hydrated skin would. Think of your skin like a window. When the window is dirty, the light can’t shine through as well and instead becomes muted.

3. Age

Unfortunately, dull-looking skin is just one more side effect of time. As we get older our skin’s natural cell turnover rate slows down. Dr Houshmand notes that this lowered rate of cell turnover can lead to a lackluster skin tone. 4. Poor Diet

Like the age-old adage says, you are what you eat. Certain things when consumed in excess—like alcohol, caffeine, and sugar—may contribute to skin looking dull and dehydrated. If you’re skipping out on vitamin-rich fruits and veggies and heading for the chips and dip, this could be your problem.

5. Weather

Ever notice how your skin can become dry and dehydrated in low-moisture environments? This is because lack of humidity in the air during winter—and in arid climates all year round—can potentially cause skin-dulling dry skin.

Smoking can do a lot of harm to your body, and your skin is definitely not an exception. Smoking can cause a number of negative side effects on the skin. Cigarettes are known to speed up the skin’s aging process, causing a sallow, dull-looking complexion.

HOW TO BRIGHTEN THE APPEARANCE OF DULL SKIN

If you have dull skin and you want to get rid of it—or at least make it appear brighter—there are a few steps you can take. Below we’re sharing a few simple tips to help you achieve skin that looks like it’s glowing from the inside, out.

Wear Broad-Spectrum SPF

The sun’s harmful UV rays are known to be incredibly drying for our skin. Since dryness may be the reason your skin appears dull, you’ll want to protect your complexion from the sun. Each and every day layer on broad spectrum sunscreen and seek shade when the sun is at its strongest during the day. To keep your skin guarded from those harmful UV rays, Dr. Houshmand recommends using a sunscreen with an SPF of 50 daily, and making sure to reapply throughout the day.

Moisturize Every Time You Cleanse

If you don’t moisturize your skin after you cleanse morning and night, it’s time to start…now! Since dryness and dehydration can cause your skin to appear dull, it’s common sense that moisturizers can help. Dr. Houshmand suggests moisturizing at least twice a day to tone down dullness. “I love products formulated with hyaluronic acid as they can help plump up and hydrate your skin,” she says. As a reminder, hyaluronic acid is a potent humectant that can attract and hold on to up to 1000 times its own weight in water, helping to offer your skin lots of long-lasting hydration.

Add Exfoliation to Your Routine

You cleanse, you moisturize, and you wear sunscreen like it’s your job, but your skin still looks dull. It’s possible your routine is missing an all-too-important step: exfoliation. Since a buildup of light-diffusing dead skin cells on the surface of the skin can cause it to appear dull, it’s important to slough them away to help your other skin care steps be as effective as they can be—versus simply sitting atop that buildup. What’s more, sloughing away that buildup can help to reveal new, brighter-looking skin that’s been hiding underneath. Twice a week, exfoliate your skin before anything else so your products have a clean slate to penetrate.

You can exfoliate your skin by using scrubs and mechanically sloughing away that buildup or by using products formulated with alpha-hydroxy acids or enzymes to help chemically exfoliate it away. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, smoking can result in a dull, dry complexion—in addition to a loss of firmness and premature lines and wrinkles. If you smoke, consider this your call to stop!

Incorporate Brightening Products into Your Regimen

A routine complete with cleansing, moisturizing, SPF, and exfoliation is a great start, but to help you visibly restore radiance you’ll want to incorporate a few key products into your routine. Wash with Lukewarm Water

Sure steamy, hot water feels amazing on your skin, but they can do a number on the way your complexion looks and feels. Hot water can strip the skin of its natural oils, subsequently drying it out and causing a dull complexion. Instead of using hot water, turn that temp down a bit and use lukewarm water instead.

Use a Mask

Getting a monthly facial is a great way to care for your skin, but let’s face it, it’s not always in the cards. A more budget-friendly option? Using a face mask 1-3 times a week. Look for a face mask that can help to brighten the appearance of your skin.

Cleanse Your Skin Thoroughly

Did you know that dead skin cell buildup isn’t the only factor that can prevent the skin from reflecting light properly? We couldn’t tell you enough how important sleep is for your skin. This study shows that skin ageing actually increases at a faster rate when you aren’t getting the proper amount of sleep, so make sure to get the recommended amount of sleep every night. This may seem hard at first, but Dr. Houshmand suggests keeping your cell phone and other bedtime distractions out of your bedroom so you can get a good rest every night.

Fake it Until You Make it!

Skin care products and lifestyle changes can take time before you start to see results, while you wait fake it! Cosmetics like color correctors, highlighters, and illuminating primers are great to help you get a faux glow. If you wash your face twice a day, great! But there’s a very crucial step you need to add: exfoliation. SOLUTION: Stress management is crucial. Take time to de-stress at home. SOLUTION: Being told to relax or get more rest tends to raise cortisol levels further rather than lower them, so we’ll skip the obvious advice for now. Instead, try a quick facial massage while cleansing or applying moisturizer. “It’s a great way to stimulate blood flow, which will add radiance and plump the skin,” says Gohara. For a more lasting glow, consider a microdermabrasion session at a dermatologist’s office. It will remove dead skin cells and boost circulation.

4. CAUSE: Your skin is dehydration station.

Without moisture, your skin looks dull, but the problem is deeper than you may realize. And we mean that literally. “Loss of hydration from below the skin’s surface — in the dermis and the lower levels of the epidermis — causes a decrease in the thickness of the skin,” says Zeichner. “Think of a deflated balloon: It doesn’t shine as well as an inflated one.”

SOLUTION: Pat on a hyaluronic acid serum with damp fingers to drive moisture deep into skin. (Try SkinCeuticals H.A. Intensifier.) Then layer a moisturizer with powerful emollients, like cetyl alcohol or dimethicone, on top. (A good choice is First Aid Beauty’s Ultra Repair Cream Intense Hydration.) “Emollients create a thin, transparent film over the skin’s surface,” says Zoe Diana Draelos, consulting professor of dermatology at Duke University. That film will help skin cells lie flat and reflect light better.

5. CAUSE: You’re not getting your daily serving of…metal?

Trace minerals are vital to forming the body’s natural antioxidants, which protect the components of healthy, radiant skin, says Draelos. But it’s difficult to get the recommended daily amounts from food alone (current farming practices are causing soil to become increasingly nutrient-bare, according to a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences).

SOLUTION: Pop a daily multivitamin. Draelos says to look for one that includes selenium, copper, iron, and zinc. The required amount of each depends on your age and sex, so clear the breakdown with your doctor first.

6. CAUSE: It’s impossible to avoid the sun entirely.

We don’t know anyone who gets excited about discovering a new sun spot on her face. Even less thrilling? Allover hyperpigmentation, which can result in mottled skin. Sun damage is also a main cause of weakened collagen — and the slack, dull skin that comes with it.

SOLUTION: We know you know, but do it: Wear. Sunscreen. No treatment will be effective as long as your skin is still exposed. Next — and, OK, you probably know this, too — use a product with retinol every night. It will protect existing collagen from breaking down and build more of the structural protein, says Gohara. Then add in a serum or a cream with a brightening ingredient, like kojic acid or arbutin (try iS Clinical Pro-Heal Serum Advance+) to fade dark spots.

7. CAUSE: Hormones go out of whack.

When hormone levels fluctuate — because of puberty, menopause, medications, or other uncontrollable circumstances — they often affect the appearance of skin. Just look at what happens when estrogen dips, leaving a higher proportion of testosterone: Skin can get oilier, and greasiness creates a surface shine that accentuates pores and makes your skin look less glowy. And melasma, a hormonal form of hyperpigmentation, leaves you with dark patches that don’t fade with topical brighteners because the pigment takes hold in both the uppermost and deeper layers of skin, says Arielle Kauvar, clinical professor of dermatology at NYU Langone Medical Center.

SOLUTION: Blotting sheets and clay masks get excess oil off your skin. But if that’s not enough, your dermatologist can prescribe medication, like the Pill or spironolactone, to treat the hormonal cause of oiliness. For stubborn melasma, ask your dermatologist about prescribing hydroquinone or obliterating the pigment with a YAG laser or Fraxel treatment.

Maintain your Complexion’s Radiance – How to Prevent Dull Skin

If you’ve got dull skin, what can you do?

You will find no shortage of skincare products that promise to restore radiance to dull skin. But if your skin hasn’t completely lost its brightness yet, there are steps you can take to ensure your complexion remains healthy-looking. Often, understanding what causes dull skin and embarking on a suitable skincare regime can help you maintain your glow and prevent dull skin from emerging.

Exfoliate

Exfoliating weekly is the most effective way to keep skin from looking dull, plus, it’s easy and inexpensive. You can use loofahs, exfoliating gloves, body brushes and pumice stones, but be careful to scrub gently so as to not irritate your skin. Exfoliating cleansers with alpha hydroxy acid are also effective, as they gently dissolve compounds that bind dead skin cells to pores without harshly ripping them away. If you’re concerned about having a tired complexion, remember to avoid products that can dry out the skin or make it hard for skin cells to get oxygen. Steer clear of products that contain isopropyl petroleum (rubbing alcohol), isopropyl palmitate, isopropyl myristate and mineral oil.

Avoid Smoking and Secondhand Smoke

Yes, you will hear this a lot – but for good reason. In addition to the myriad of damaging effects on your health, smoking also strips your skin of its youthful, healthy vivacity. Repeated contact with firsthand and secondhand smoke will damage healthy skin, causing it to look prematurely old and sallow. So stay away from cigarette smoke – it’s much easier to prevent the negative side effects that smoking has on your appearance than try to reverse the damage after it occurs.

Exercise

A good exercise routine stimulates blood flow, which is vital to maintaining a glowing complexion. And by pumping up blood flow, you also help your body to function properly. Nutrients will be evenly distributed all over your system, which will help keep your body healthy and your skin bright.

Moisturize

Dry skin can appear dull, so make sure to moisturize regularly with a lotion suitable for your skin type . Using moisturizing creams, especially after taking a bath or a shower, can prevent parched skin and imparts a soft, dewy look. Water-based lotions are generally appropriate for mildly dry skin, but if your skin is quite dry, apply an oil-based moisturizing lotion twice every day. Avoid taking long, hot showers, as hot water draws moisture from the skin and removes the skin’s natural layer of protective oil, drying it out.

Eat Well, Stay Hydrated

To make sure your skin doesn’t lose its vibrancy, keep away from processed and fatty foods. Eat a balanced diet that contains plenty of fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables are beneficial to the appearance and health of your skin, and will help protect it from free-radical damage. Foods rich in vitamins A, C and E in particular are particularly noted for improving the skin’s appearance. Furthermore, make sure to drink at least six glasses of water daily, as the body needs to receive adequate hydration to maintain healthy-looking skin. Avoid or limit caffeinated beverages since caffeine interferes with the body’s absorption of vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C and iron, both strongly linked to a hydrated complexion and rosy glow.

Although maintaining a radiant glow and never getting dull skin in the first place is ideal, sometimes we don’t have the time or ability to do so. But that doesn’t mean there is nothing you can do. There are various options for treating dull skin and regaining the radiant complexion you desire.

5 Skin-Care Ingredients That Get Rid of Dull Skin and Help You Glow from Within

You don’t need to be energy-drained from erratic weather or jet-lag or burning the midnight oil to wind up with tired skin. Telltale signs of an exhausted complexion-saggy, dull, dry, sallow, and wrinkled-mimic the look of sleep-deprivation but actually occur when the mitochondria (the energy centers of cells) run out of juice and need to be recharged. You can factor in stress, your age, and drinking too much alcohol, which can all drain the mitochondria’s power, but the biggest culprit is environmental toxins. “Tired skin is on the rise because we live in a more polluted environment that’s swarming with free radicals that damage skin,” says Dennis Gross, M.D., a dermatologist in New York City. Skin cells have only so much energy. If there are harmful molecules in the atmosphere, cells use up all that energy fighting them off. Eventually, they become too fatigued and surrender. That’s when damage occurs. Cells can also become too spent to bang out their daily to-do list, like building collagen and shedding dead skin, and then you get that dull, dry, drawn look. Fortunately, there’s an ingredient out there that can erase each symptom. Try these top tired-skin cures.

How to Get Rid of Sagging and Wrinkles: Vitamin C

Every time you step outside, your face is assaulted by free radicals such as nitric oxide, carbon monoxide, and ozone. These toxins interfere with the production of cellular energy, and they damage the mitochondria, preventing cells from functioning normally. Vitamin C (a.k.a. L-ascorbic acid) is an antioxidant that’s especially good at deactivating energy-sucking pollutants and has the added value of being able to increase collagen. It’s a win-win: The more energy a cell has, the more collagen vitamin C can help to produce. (BTW it’s never too early to protect your skin’s collagen.)

Other potent free radical–fighting antioxidants include vitamin E, CoQ10, and even hydrogen. In many areas of the country, tap water is packed with minerals (this type of H2O is referred to as “hard water”). When you wash your face, residue from mineral-rich water remains on your skin doing nasty things.

“Hard water is high in calcium, which takes your own natural oils and hardens them into a waxy buildup, causing skin to look dry and dull, and making pores appear bigger,” says Dr. Gross. “Water softeners called chelators- which can show up on ingredient lists as phytic acid-act like little Pac-Men, engulfing the calcium and deactivating it.” (Hard water can also contain potentially damaging heavy metals like iron, magnesium, and copper-and chelators take care of these too.) Slather on a product that has chelators built right in. How to Get Rid of Dull Skin: Alpha Hydroxy Acids

Sleepy cells tend to shirk their cell turnover duties, meaning you’re left with a buildup of dead skin that makes your complexion look dull and tired. “Exfoliate with an AHA, like glycolic acid or lactic acid, to slough off that top layer of skin, jump-start cell turnover, and boost collagen,” says Francesca Fusco, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC. “AHAs really refresh and brighten the skin, and they help serums and creams absorb more efficiently.” Her fave: First Aid Beauty Facial Radiance Pads ($30, ulta.com), which are gentle enough for daily use.

How to Get Rid of Sallow Skin: Niacinamide

Applying niacinamide “is like giving the mitochondria a cup of coffee,” says Dr. Gross. Niacinamide is a vitamin B3 derivative that stimulates cells to produce energy by acting as a wingman for another type of molecule (called NADH) that helps convert fat to energy. Niacinamide can be especially effective when it teams up with carnitine, a type of molecule that helps boost energy production by delivering long-chain fatty acids to the mitochondria, where they can be burned to generate power.
