Weird heart rate vaviations on our Nordic Track treadmill when my huband uses it.
Thank you for submitting a question to Manage My Life.
If you walk on the treadmill while attempting to measure your heart rate it will not give an accurate reading. I have a similar tread mill and if I want an accurate heart rate reading I have to stop my treadmill.
The heart rate monitor on this treadmill is designed to measure heart rate while not moving. The
states “Before using the heart rate monitor, remove the sheets of plastic from the metal contacts, if necessary. In addition, make sure that your hands are clean. To measure your heart rate,
on the foot rails and hold the metal contacts on the handrails for approximately ten seconds
avoid moving your hands
. When your pulse is detected, a heart symbol in the calorie display will flash each time your heart beats, one or two dashes will appear, and then your heart rate will be shown. For the most accurate heart rate reading, continue to hold the contacts for about 15 seconds”.
If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website;

What Heart Monitors Work With Nordic Track Treadmills?
All Nordic Track treadmills provide a way to monitor your heart rate 1. Most models come equipped with a wireless or built-in heart rate monitoring system 1. Nordic Track also offers an additional accessory you may use in monitoring your heart rate. Use only Nordic Track accessories or provided heart rate monitoring products; other products, not sold or provided by Nordic Track, may not provide accurate results.
Wireless Heart Rate Monitor
The wireless heart rate monitor continuously monitors your heart rate and transmits the readings to your treadmill’s console 1. While compatible with most Nordic Track treadmills, you will need to consult your treadmill user’s manual or contact Nordic Track customer service to verify compatibility. Purchase Nordic Track’s wireless hands-free heart rate monitor model; other brands are likely not compatible 1. Nordic Track does not typically provide this accessory when you purchase a Nordic Track treadmill.
Built-in Handlebar Sensors
On some Nordic Track treadmill models, you’ll find built-in handlebar sensors. These sensors require you grip the handles with clean hands. Stand on the belt, holding the contacts and avoid moving your hands to receive an accurate reading as soon as the machine detects your pulse. Hold the contacts for at least 15 seconds to monitor if the heart rate reading stays fairly consistent 1. The heart rate appears on the console display.
Chest Pulse Sensor
Nordic Track offers a chest pulse sensor with some treadmill models. Wrap the sensor tightly around your chest underneath your clothing. Wet the electrodes on the strap to activate the sensor; the sensor only provides a reading when the electrodes are wet. Position the chest pulse sensor appropriately or it may not operate properly. Center yourself in the middle of the treadmill. Operation of the chest pulse sensor may be affected by medical conditions including premature ventricular contractions, tachycardia bursts and arrhythmia or magnetic interference caused by power lines, televisions, radios, telephones or other electrical sources.cause:

The Wrap Up
Nordic Track also offers an additional accessory you may use in monitoring your heart rate. Purchase Nordic Track’s wireless hands-free heart rate monitor model; other brands are likely not compatible. Position the chest pulse sensor appropriately or it may not operate properly.
While Nordic Track produces some of the best-reviewed treadmills on the market, some customers have problems with their machines. The heart rate monitors that come standard with most of the treadmills may not display the right rate. You may also have problems with the walking belt, which can slow or stop if it’s loose. Before doing any maintenance or repair on your Nordic Track treadmill, remove the key and unplug the machine.
Heart Rate Monitor Problems
Some Nordic Track treadmills come with heart rate monitors. The Nordic Track Professional Series 4000 is one of many treadmills that come with a chest pulse monitor. While this is a very accurate way to detect your heart rate, there have been problems with this device. If you find that your heart rate stays at zero on the console, ensure that you’re wearing the chest strap underneath your clothes so it’s touching your skin. Also ensure that the contacts are sufficiently moistened with saliva or contact solution.
Hand grip heart rate monitors work without strapping something to your body. While many Nordic Track treadmills have heart rate monitors in the hand grips, some people have found them to be inaccurate. Be sure to keep the metal contacts clean using all-purpose cleaner or a damp cloth. If you use the heart rate monitor correctly by placing your palm around the metal bar, it should display a heart rate after a few seconds. If not, try restarting the console by removing the key and unplugging the machine for at least 30 seconds.
Walking Belt Problems
The walking belt on a Nordic Track treadmill should move fluidly. If you find that the belt on a treadmill, such as a Nordic Track 9600, stops when you stand on it, the belt may be loose. To verify, lift up the side of the treadmill belt along the middle of the deck. A well-adjusted walking belt will lift up between 3 and 4 inches. If it lifts higher, the walking belt is loose. Tighten it by using the Allen wrench supplied with your treadmill. Tighten the bolts at the end of the treadmill deck on either side of the rear roller. Turn each bolt a quarter turn to the right, testing the tightness by lifting the belt. Keep turning the bolts a quarter turn until the belt reaches the 3- to 4-inch range.
Through the course of your treadmill use, you may notice a white powder sticking to your treadmill belt. This will often happen in the first few hours of use. The powder may get on the foot rails or on the floor beneath the treadmill deck. Don’t worry; your treadmill walking belt isn’t broken. The white powder is a performance lubricant used on Nordic Track treadmills. It comes in a powder form and it coats the underside of the walking belt. If your treadmill produces this white powder, know that you should never use silicone spray to lubricate your walking belt during regular maintenance.
Connect Your Heart Rate Strap
These instructions are specific to the NordicTrack Fusion CST machine. In order to connect your heart rate strap to your machine, please follow the steps below.
First, you’ll need to put on your heart rate strap. To do so, follow these steps:
- Wrap the heart rate strap around your chest. It needs to be under your clothes and tight against your skin.
- Next, pull the strap away from your body, then wet the two electrode areas using saliva or contact lens solution. Place the strap back against your chest.
To connect your heart rate strap, follow these steps:
- Press the Bluetooth Smart button on your console. The console pairing number will appear on the display.
- When a connection is established, the LED on the console will flash red twice, indicating you’re connected.
NOTE: If there is more than one compatible heart rate monitor near the console, the console will connect to the heart rate monitor with the strongest signal.
To disconnect your heart rate strap, press and hold the Bluetooth Smart button on your console until the LED on the console turns solid green.
NOTE: All Bluetooth connections between your console and other devices (including any tablets, other heart rate monitors, and so forth) will be disconnected.
